Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

To many Australian Mining Engineers, we take it, the singular features of banket deposits are not as familiarly known as they would wish, possibly because in the majority of instances they are not in touch with the South African milling world, and have had little opportunity of studying the development of the banket beds, either from correspondence or literature. The writer hazards this opinion feelingly, because, when in Australia and before he had visited Africa, the utmost knowledge he was able to obtnin was a mass of conflicting theoretic discussion as to the agencies which formed the banket bed, without any practical hints as to their geological horizon, the rocks with which they are associated, the usual appearance and character of the ore, in fine, without that everyday detailed description which the miner requires when seeking information regarding mineral or metal deposit foreign in character to any that he has yet studied, or as yet had any opportunity of studying in his own country.The writer recognised that many more able men than he have from time to time discussed the features and formation of the banket beds of the land, notwithstanding which and feeling that many of his Australian colleagues have found themselves in a similar position regarding accurate detailed information respecting these African banket deposits as he himself was, he hopes that the present paper on the said deposits, as found on the fields under notice, will prove useful to some and of interest to all.

It is difficult, and probably inadvisable, to frame rigid rules for the valuation of alluvial deposits, for such deposits are very diverse in type, varying, for example, according to the mineral sought and according'to the complexity of the deposit which, on one hand, may be a narrow welldefined alluvial strip at the bottom of which is a continuous mineral lead, or, on the other, may be a broad alluvial flat with discontinuous patches of the valuable mineral occurring at different levels throughout the alluvium.However, some definite procedure in valuation must be adopted when dealing with anyone deposit, and the fundamentals of such a procedure are applicable to almost all alluvial deposits.The methods described in this paper are based very largely on the valuation of a specific deposit and, although an attempt has been made to keep the discussion as general as possible, it contains some statements which, if traced to their origin, spring from the writer's association with that deposit. Such statements must be interpreted with sufficient flexibility to be appropriate to whatever area the reader may have in mind.The subject of valuing an alluvial deposit falls naturally into two divisions: The valuation of each borehole; the valuation of the deposit as a whole. The following discussion is therefore dealt with under these two headings.Some general matters are mentioned in a third section.

Project management is not a task to be undertaken lightly. Mining projects generally present even more challenges due to ChinaÆs remoteness and complexity. Having experiences in project management in the West is certainly an asset, but China can present the uninitiated with any number of headaches. To undertake a project there can have many problems that are unique to China. For the last 15 years, China has seen an increasing number of foreign capital investment projects in the mining industry. Practices involved in mining project development have experienced/are experiencing an evolution. Since 1996, Sino Gold Mining Ltd has delivered three mines in China, ie Jianchaling Gold Mine, Jinfeng Gold Mine and White Mountain Gold Mine. Through the work, Sino Gold has established a solid knowledge base and a capable and skilful workforce in effectively undertaking mining projects in China. This paper is concerned with the experiences accumulated so far by Sino Gold in project management in China. An overall review is conducted regarding the reform of the mining project development in China. Opportunities and challenges are highlighted within the political, economic and culture context. Brief summaries of the development of the three gold mines are presented.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the orebody to enhance rock mass cavability is gaining acceptance in underground cave mining applications. Assisting cavability is becoming important as an increasing number of cave mines are being implemented in hard, deep and competent rock masses where clamping stresses are higher and cave column heights may be in excess of 1000 m. Propagating large caves to surface in such conditions can be challenging as risks such as slowed propagation and air gaps can develop during the process.Underground-based hydraulic fracturing is routinely used at Cadia East as a means of preconditioning the orebody to assist in cave propagation, fragmentation and seismicity reduction. This paper presents a summary of a surface-based hydraulic fracture program that was successfully implemented to assist in the propagation of the Cadia East Panel Cave 1 (CE-PC1) cave to surface through competent overlying rock masses. In this case study, the propagation of the CE-PC1 cave slowed as the cave grew past 750 m in height, initiating a Trigger Action Response Plan regarding the cave propagation rate. Surface-based hydraulic fracturing was subsequently used to stimulate the cave to propagate through the final 450 m to surface. In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.

A pyrite flotation concentrate assaying 0·065 oz/ton gold was investigated to determine the mode of occurrence of the gold. Ftom cyanidation and acid leaching experiments it was concluded that O· 02-0· 03 oz/ton goldwas in solid solution in pyrite and the balance of the gold was finely dispersed as grains throughout the pyrite.Autoradiography and electron-probe examination of possible areas in briquetted concentrate did not detect any grains of gold. Neutron irradiation and gamma spectrometry confirmed on 100 mg samples the fire assays obtained on 1 assay ton samples.Oxidation to hematite and reduction to magnetite at 600°C made practically the whole of the gold extractable by cyanide. This technique could be of major significance for gold ores which contain a substantial amount of "refractory" gold.

In presenting this paper the author has in view a twofold purpose. In the first place, it is intended to set forth for the benefit of practical mining men some account of the principles underlying the design of tungsten carbide rock bits in the hope that a knowledge of these principles will assist in the successful application of the bits to mine and quarry drilling. Secondly, by evoking discussion, and even controversy, it is hoped that manufacturers and users of these rock bits will be encouraged to contribute to the general knowledge of a subject which to date has been rather lacking in published literature. The author well appreciates that many of the conclusions drawn in this paper are highly controversial, but if the only result is to call forth contradictory testimony from other workers in this field, at least one of his purposes will have been achieved.An attempt will first be made to set forth and examine those characteristics which go to make up an efficient rock bit, and the main factors affecting these characteristics will be discussed. In a paper of this general nature, consideration of any particular aspect must necessarily be rather brief, and there is little opportunity for detailed presentation of test procedures and data. In June 2012, Lucara Diamond Corporation officially commissioned its Karowe Diamond Mine in Letlhakane, Botswana. The processing plant circuit incorporates variable speed autogeneous milling, a first for African diamond processing - only previously practiced in Russia. The paper discusses the basis for the selection of milling against the more traditional circuits incorporating crushing and scrubbing. It covers early commissioning challenges of operating a mill in an æalien environmentÆ with no immediate reference plant to look up to for bench-marking.The paper describes how these challenges were overcome and learnings quickly incorporated into the mill operating philosophy for maximum diamond liberation and minimum product damage. The plant was commissioned in three months and by August 2012 the production ramp up had reached name-plate capacity. The feed to the mill has varied from highly weathered material to extremely hard kimberlite and the operating philosophy had to be optimised for the full range of ore types. A detailed analysis of faulting indicatcs that blocks of "greenstone" have been thrust beneath the southern end of the Mt. Isa orebodies.This "greenstone" basement is considered to be a major structural control in the localization of these orebodies.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on exploration carried out by Mining Corporation (Aust.) N.L. from 1956 to 1960 in the area immediately south of Mt. Isa, Queensland. During this period over 20,000 ft of diamond drilling was completed together with costeaning and geochemical exploration.Early in 1959, it became apparent that diamond drill information could not be correlated with the current geological concepts of this area and a detailed geological appraisal became necessary. In all, sixty square miles were mapped at a scale of 1 in. to 500 ft, using enlarged aerial photographs. All drill core was logged and sections re-interpreted.Professor K. C. Dunham of the University of Durham consulted on this project and contributed through valuable discussion. Dr. A. Day of the University of Sydney carried out a gravity survey in February 1960 and Dr. H. Wilshire of the same University undertook microscopic examination of rocks from the area. In choosing the subject for my address to you this evening I was actuated by the knowledge that in the past Australian metallurgical problems have been solved by the introduction of extremely interesting processes. Frequently such processes originated in this country, or at least were first adopted here on a large scale.Chronologically there comes to mind the application of chlorination to the Mount Morgan ores from 1888 onwards.Then the application of pyritic smelting to the Mount Lyell ore body in 1896, followed closely by the successful flotation of zinc blendÇ! at Broken Hill, about 1900, and the treatment of the refractory Kalgoorlie gold ores by roasting and cyaniding. With the development of the differential flotation process at Broken Hill came the production of a slime lead concentrate carrying zinc which necessitated the use of a high zinc slag in the lead smelting process. Although previously considered impossible, the necessarytechnique was successfully evolved at Port Pirie resulting in the accumulation of large tonnages of zinc-bearing slag as potential sources of that metal. Establishment of the Cadia East Panel Cave Stage One (PC1S1) commenced with the firing of the first bell in early 2011. Production began with the completion of the undercut in May 2014. PC1S1 used a post-undercut composed of 114 drawbells covering a footprint area of 73 438 m². The extraction level is located at a depth of 1200 m below the surface and is based on a 32 × 20 m El Teniente layout. Cave establishment required the construction of multiple conveyor drifts, a large-capacity jaw-gyratory crusher and ancillary ventilation and pumping infrastructure. Preconditioning via hydraulic fracturing and blasting was implemented at various locations of the cave block height. Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

This paper describes certain analytical methods used at the Rosepery Mine and Treatment Plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., which are not generally in use and may therefore be of more interest than a description of the normal routine methods which are used in most of the mining assay laboratories of the Commonwealth, and which have been published previously.The ore mined and treated at Rosebery is of a complex nature and demands closer control in the concentrating plant than is necessary on some other similar mining fields.It is necessary for the mill shift supervisors to keep constant control on the grade of lead and zinc concentrates produced on their respective shifts, and further, it is essential to maintain an economic compromise between grade of concentrates and the recovery of the particular concent:t:ate. This necessitates a more frequent check on concentrate grade tp.an is provided by the daily assays carried, out by the assay office. Rather than employ trained ,assayers on shift work, "quick methods" of analysis, which could be carried out by the operators, 'were adopted.'In such methods, it is desirable that the necessary manipulation should be reduced to the following:-a. Taking the sample, drying and mixing.b. Weighing the necessary amount of sample-for assay.c. Adding the reagents for use in the assay without change of beakers.d. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) techniques are capable of providing high-quality quantitative information regarding the phase mineralogy and distribution of alumina within iron ore samples. The techniques, however, use different methodologies in determining the mineralogical information (ie structural versus chemical), which introduces some limitations. In this study, EPMA was used to identify and quantify the deportment of alumina within mineral phases in iron ore samples (-1 mm crushed) sourced from different suppliers. Results were directly compared with quantitative mineralogical data derived from QXRD to provide an evaluation of the relative merits of both techniques. The four ores studied contained alumina either in the form of gibbsite, aluminosilicates (eg kaolinite), or associated with goethite.For minor phases, gibbsite and kaolinite, the abundance trends measured via QXRD were generally reflected in the EPMA data. Agreement was less satisfactory for the more abundant goethite phase (both low- and high-Al forms). The discrepancy may be the result of sampling issues arising from textural features such as grain size, and also a systematic overestimate in the amount of Al-rich goethite when hematite and Al-bearing phases are finely intermixed and the EPMA step size is coarse. A second difference in the EPMA results compared to the QXRD data was in regard to quantification of low-Al and high-Al goethite phases. The sensitivity of the chemical-based EPMA was better for distinguishing between high- and low-Al goethite although the results remain overprinted by potential errors introduced via sampling.Care should be taken when directly comparing results from each method, although in general the data should be considered complementary, as each approach provides slightly different results and interpretations regarding the overall mineralogy.CITATION:Pownceby, M I, MacRae, C M and Torpy, A, 2017.
