Since the disappearance of Les Forges du Saint-Maurice at the end of the last century, many historians have taken an interest in the lengthy past of this enterprise. They considered the political, socio-economic, administrative and anecdotal aspects of the industry, but barely dealt with the elements of technology. The purpose of this article is to try to fill this gap (1). Les Forges du Saint-Maurice was an integrated industrial concern, specializing in the production of semi-finished wrought iron and finished cast iron that operated almost without interruption between 1734 and 1883. Les Forges first came into being in 1729, when Montreal merchant Franc;ois Poulin de Francheville submitted to the King of France a request for the right to exploit the bog iron ore deposits on his seigneury of Saint-Maurice. This request, agreed to in 1730, was one of a long series of attempts, previously unsuccessful, to establish a local iron industry in the colony. Several such proposals were held up by a lack of capital from promoters or a too rigid application of the mercantilist policy by the metropolis. In 1730, however, the French minister Maurepas favoured a more liberal policy which would encourage private enterprise. The benefits of an iron industry to the naval construction industry was a factor that caught the attention of administrators. The choice of the site for Les Forges was based on the following factors: - the abundance of surface deposits of bog iron ore in the Saint-Maurice region; - the presence of a vast supply of hardwood and conifers needed in large quantities by this industry; - the proximity of sandstone and limestone deposits, md1spensable materials for the construction and operation of the blast furnace; - the presence of a water stream, with sufficient flow to provide the hydraulic power needed for the operation of the machinery.

When Dame Nature shook her horn of plenty and distributed her bounties over the face of the earth, she blessed the Pacific coast with many riches, but with these she added many offsetting disadvantages or handicaps, designed, no doubt, to effect a proper balance between wealth and economy. Nowhere is the application of the law of compensation more aptly illustrated than in the matter of fuel and power resources. A glance at the map of the Pacific northwest will show that west of the Coast Range batholith we are bounteously supplied with coal, with timber, with water power, and with tributary resources of oil from California. Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, all contain large resources of coal; Oregon and California to a lesser degree, but, compensating the golden state for its deficiency in this respect, oil was placed in the treasure ,chest. Timber, of wide variety and in lavish quantity, covers the forests from tidewater to mountain slope, and within this protected watershed area flow streams which give the Pacific coast states the largest single share of the potential water-power resources of the country. Something over 40 per cent. of the total estimated horsepower of the United States is to be found in the Pacific states, and British Columbia has 15 per cent. of the total for Canada; but of this total less than 10 per cent. has been developed.

"IT IS a pleasure for me to appear before yon today and to have this opportunity of reviewing with you recent developments in the world lead and zinc industry. To provide essential background material, I propose reviewing the period from 1950 to the present, a period which has undoubtedly been the most hectic in the long history of the industry.In capsule form, the pattern for this period is one of repeating cycles of boom and recession, of failure through research to develop adequately new markets and new uses for lead and zinc, of surplus production and growing inventories, of price instability, and lastly, of an abdication in some sections of the industry of responsibility for control of its own destiny by turning to governments for support in time of stress. This is not a pretty picture but, as the 1950 decade ends, there are signs of a new maturity and of a growing determination on the part of the industry to put its own house in order.The difficulty suffered by the world's lead and zinc industry in the current decade originated with the support extended to it in 1950 by the U.S. Government at the time of the Korean conflict. Recalling the shortage of base metals in World War II and fearing that the Korean conflict might develop into World War III, the U.S. Government in 1950 adopted a policy to encourage the production of lead and zinc, both domestically and abroad by means of development loans and long-term floor priced purclu.se contracts."

Fair market value, in the legal sense , is the price which a prudent and knowledgeable buyer and a prudent and knowledgeable seller, acting without constraint or compulsion , will agree upon to exchange an asset. In the ordinary commercial or engineering usage, the term may imply simply the market value or a reasonable and equitable price. The engineer evaluator who is called upon to express an opinion about the fair market value of an asset may be able to base his estimate on the sale price of similar assets or on the market values of stock. Frequently such indicators of value are not available and the evaluator must devise other means of appraisal. Mineral resource properties may be thought of as having value by virtue of the existing or potential ability to produce at a profit. Conventional procedures permit the computation of the present value of future revenues having due regard for the time value of money and the risks attendant upon the realization of the venture. Such computations have gained wide acceptance as a basis for the estimation of fair market value.

Custom milling-plants have been operated successfully for a great many years on this continent. One of the outstanding examples in the United States is the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs, which mills the gold-telluride ores from the Cripple Creek district. In eastern Canada, the Northern Custom Concentrators, Limited, at Cobalt, successfully treated the cobalt-silver ores of that area for a number of years. Flotation plants have entered the custom field in the past few years. The building of flotation concentrators to treat ores on a custom basis indicates the advance which has been made in flotation. In fact, three years ago it was considered almost impossible to treat successfully a mixture of miscellaneous ores by flotation. The methods used at that time were considered so delicate that any change, even in a single ore, would usually result in decreasing the effectiveness of the separation. Today we find four large custom flotation plants in the United States and one in Canada for treating complex lead-zinc ores from many different localities. The advent of these mills was brought about by the serious problem confronting the lead-smelting plants due to increasing amounts of zinc in the ores presented for treatment. It was necessary to penalize the mines shipping high-zinc ores. The penalty is justified, because high zinc in the lead blast-furnace charge not only decreases the tonnage of the furnace but increases the amount of flux necessary, as well as increasing the metal loss in the slag. It has been estimated that in the Salt Lake valley alone, 75,000,000 pounds of zinc was lost in the slag-dumps from the operations of three large lead blast-furnace plants. It has also been estimated that $150,000 worth of additional flux was required to slag this zinc. It was to avoid at least a part of this wste and to help maintain an ore supply that custom flotation concentrators were built by the smelters.

Orebodies occur in an infinite variety of grades, shapes and sizes, and take many millions of years to grow. When extraction starts there is only one possible end -the mine sooner or later will run out of ore and shut down. If the mineral industry is to supply the ever increasing demands of modern civilizations, more and more metals must be found and mined. This will require a never-ending search for ore, and the development of every economic body, large or small. To justify the mining of a small orebody, it first of all must pay its way. If the size of the burden imposed by the capital cost estimates is not carefully worked out, an otherwise promising situation could be killed. The very nature of mining, as a transient industry, re-leases a steady stream of good used equipment, and the trained personnel to install and operate it. All manner of plans and layouts, which can be utilized at a new property, are available. Working these and other economies into the estimates will sometimes make enough difference to give a prospect the green light.

A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shams and make future expenditures on the property. The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shams by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shams are treated about the same in terms of value. Buyers and sellers haw opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments. On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value.

The Dominion Coal Board was created by Statute passed on July 17th, 1947, and was brought into effect by proclamation on October 21st, 1947. It is, consequently, a comparatively young body, having been in existence for only eighteen months. Before dealing with the constitution and duties of the Board, it may be well to answer the unspoken question of why it has been considered necessary to single out coal as one specific mineral requiring the continuous attention of a specially created permanent Board. In Canada, coal has been the neglected sister of the more spectacular minerals and it comes as a surprise co many to note that in 1948 the value of the coal produced in Canada was higher than that of any other mineral with the one exception of gold. Coal touches upon our daily lives in many different places of which the public are not generally conscious. As household fuel, it is a necessity of life in this northern climate; as a source of steam, it provides the heat for most of our industries; it is the food of the 'iron horse' chat shuttles our persons and our goods across the land; it is the source of power in many parts of the country; it is the chemical reducing agent chat, in our furnaces, transmutes the metallic oxides to the virgin metal. Coal is, in fact, the indispensable mineral chat forms the corner-stone of our present structure of industrial civilization. Is it, then, such an odd thing that the provision of an adequate supply of coal should be a matter of national interest or that measures should have been taken by government co provide for a constant watch, by a permanent Board, on the supply of co al? ? The Board is the result of the recommendations of the Royal Commission on coal which made a long and detailed study of the Canadian coal problem. It is composed of a permanent Chairman and six part-time members, most of whom have had intimate contact with various phases of the industry.

THE purpose of this paper is to point out, briefly, the importance of the coal mining industry of Alberta and to stress the economic factors that hinder its development; also to offer suggestions relating to the major problems of the industry. The minor problems will not be dealt with in detail, because, if the major problems are taken care of, it is felt that the industry itself can take care of ,he remainder. COAL MINING NO LESS IMPORTANT THAN GOLO MINING The large increase in metal mining development in all provinces of Canada, excepting Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the Maritimes, has had the effect of focussing public attention on this branch of the industry. The fact, also, that this development came at a time of depression has been of immense benefit to Canada as a whole. On account of the necessity and consequent demand for gold, with its attendant increase in price, through government action, from $20.67 per ounce to $35.00 per ounce, it is safe to say that the public of Canada have become, today, gold mining conscious. While everyone admits the great value. of the gold mrn111g industry, nevertheless, the equal value to Canada of certain other industries must not be lost sight of. The coal mining industry, in particular, is worthy of greater public and government support than has been accorded it in the past. It would seem unnecessary to stress this matter to a meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, but unless certain facts are brought to your attention, there is danger that the coal mining industry will not be developed to the extent its national importance deserves. Too many public men and men in authority are unaware of the value of coal mining.

Anode casting has been in operation for two years in Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting's Flin Flon smelter. The new plant allows all casting to be done on one shift and so achieves considerable labour savings. The equipment and operations are described. Some important features are as follows: very consistent anode weights by the use of the load-cell controlled casting ladle; excellent mould life ; very low reject rate; and trouble-free take -off tower. Some of the start-up problems are described and an outline is given of the main operator functions. Data on labour, propane and maintenance costs are presented.

Indications are that underground mining is gaining favour with large and small mining companies due to environmental and sustainability concerns. Dramatic changes to mine fill technologies will be needed in order to keep pace with these emerging trends. The industry will be compelled to gravitate toward zero discharge mining operations. Innovative handling of mine tailings will become a focal point in this effort. The challenges are to use a greater portion of the residues and to manufacture a fill with better properties. This is a tall order that can only be addressed through a systematic research and implementation process involving mining companies, universities, research organizations, manufacturers and governments. The mining industry has to be at the forefront of this technology push in mine fills for the future mines. It will also be called upon to lead the way in other research areas. The industry will have to partner with other technology providers: universities, government laboratories and consultants.

This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum?s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill ? a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was ?proof of concept? and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years. Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity ? this paper describes the projects? roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs.

"Dofasco began operations in 1912 as a steel foundry located in Hamilton, Ontario. Today, Dofasco is a fully integrated mill that manufactures hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized and tinplate steels. Customers include the automotive, construction, tubular, manufacturing, appliance, packaging and steel ser-vice centre industries. Raw steel production and purchased semi-finished steel processed in1994 was 3.5 million net tonnes. Dofasco employs 7300 people at its Hamilton facility.Environmental management at Dofasco is guided by its environment policy and associated commitments. This paper discusses Dofasco’s responsibility for its products as it relates to these commitments. Dofasco is com-mitted to:n the principles of sustainable development that require that activities be conducted in a manner that provides for the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Originally developed as a step change in ultrafine grinding efficiency, the IsaMill? has made inroads into conventional ball mill and tower mill mainstream grinding duties during the last 5 years - beginning with the Anglo Platinum mainstream grinding projects in South Africa. At the 2006 SAG Conference, plant testwork on the incorporation of IsaMill? technology into the McArthur River (Northern Territory, Australia) Pb/Zn primary grinding circuit was reported. The IsaMill? has now become an integral component of that circuit, treating up to 1mm top size feed and directly producing P80 45 µm rougher flotation feed. Two 1.1 MW IsaMills? are now used in this duty contributing to a 27% increase in overall plant throughput and a reduction in rougher feed size distribution. In this paper, we report on the current state of development and performance of the IsaMill? in the primary grinding duty at McArthur River and also consider future directions.

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. High productivity of the equipment employed is one of the key factors in reducing production cost in mining. One of the best ways to achieve it is an increase in availability. In order to identify the most adverse factors affecting it, reliability and maintainability analysis ought to be done. If its results are to be conclusive, a sufficient amount of credible and consistent data is indispensable. Following the experience from field studies done in underground mines, this paper discusses the current status of failure and maintenance reporting, as well as problems encountered. It exposes the importance of adequate data collection on failures and downtime as well as it reviews the benefits of analysis based on such material. The question of benchmarking with regards to mining equipment performance is also addressed. The paper concludes with some recommendations on data collection and processing, as well as stresses the need to standardize the most important reliability/ maintenance notions throughout the mining industry and to conceive appropriate performance measures.

"Load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are typically used in underground metal mining operations. Delays or inappropriate use of LHDs can result in production loss. Optimized LHD use is especially crucial in larger mines because longer travel distances increase heat, dust, and gas emissions, which in turn increase ventilation costs. This study, conducted at an existing Swedish sublevel cave underground mine, used discrete event simulation and the AutoMod™ DES tool to determine the ventilation costs related to using too many diesel LHDs in a production area with reduced ore pass availability. When fewer ore passes are available, ventilation costs related to operating LHDs in the production area were found to increase by as much as 200, 224, and 306% for one, three, and six LHDs in operation, respectively. ¦ KEYWORDS Discrete event simulation (DES), Loading operations, Production rate, Ventilation costs RÉSUMÉ Dans les exploitations souterraines d’extraction des métaux, on utilise généralement des chargeurs-transporteurs (LHD, de l’anglais Load-haul-dump machines). Load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are designed for such an environment. Models are available to suit specific features of the working environment such as small, large, or narrow open stopes (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). When carrying a full load, haulage speed is higher for LHDs than for front-end loaders with the same engine size. Also, payloads are approximately 50% higher for LHDs than for front-end loaders (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). LHDs are capable of climbing steep (Bloss, Harvey, Grant, & Routley, 2011). The haulage distance between stope and ore pass is usually between 50 m and 400 m. LHDs are efficient for tramming distances up to 200 m (Bloss et al., 2011), whereas when loading trucks, the LHDs work efficiently when the distance is less than 100 m (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). The largest diesel-powered LHDs, with drive motors of up to 350 kW, can handle a payload of 21 t (Wennmohs, 2014). Most mining equipment runs on diesel fuel, which provides flexibility, high durability, and high efficiency (Pronk, Coble, & Stewart, 2009); however, other alternatives such as electric, hybrid diesel/electric, or hydrogen fuel cell machines are increasingly being developed and used. This change is due to diesel-powered machines accounting for a significant portion of the ventilation costs in the mine (Chadwick, 2008; Paraszczak, Laflamme, & Fytas, 2013). "During the last decade, mining companies have been overwhelmed by technological solutions to perceived problems. This is particularly true with information technology where rapid advances have resulted in a professional climate characterized by technomania — the perception that failure to adopt emerging technologies will result in a loss of competitive advantage. This paper describes the applicability of structured analysis and design techniques as an appropriate methodology for integrating emerging technologies in the mining industry. The potential of this approach to improve overall mine effectiveness through improved communication and co-ordination between operations and maintenance is discussed. IntroductionA strong working relationship between the operations and maintenance departments in both open pit and underground mines is fundamental to the overall success of the mining endeavour. Unfortunately, for many mines, this characterization is far from accurate. Short-range production targets dominate the day-to-day management of the mines. This can be seen in Bostwick and Buchanan’s (1993) report on American Barrick Resources efforts to achieve an aggressive 415 000 tpd mining program at their Goldstrike operation in Nevada. When production managers do not meet their quotas, the finger is often pointed at maintenance. As a result, a confrontational culture can develop between the two organizations, resulting in a lack of cooperation that exacerbates the problem. Historically, production planning has taken priority over maintenance planning. This is reasonable since production is the primary purpose of the mine with maintenance serving in a support role. This basic relationship remains intact today. However, the trends toward mechanization, increasing levels of automation, and larger equipment, have resulted in increased reliance on the equipment used in the mine. As a result, downtime costs now go well beyond the direct labour associated with the repair of the machine. Lost production costs due to downtime resulting from failed equipment are becoming an increasingly important factor in determining a mine’s overall economic performance."

"THE COAL INDUSTRY of the United States• and Canada has made great progress in recent years. Coal mining in •the old days represented one of the most arduous tasks for labour and industry, but over the years great progress has been made in reducing the effort required from labour. Also, the tonnage produced per man, the cost of the coal per ton, and the overall safety of the operation, have been greatly improved.Looking back over the past fifty years:, the era can be divided into four principal parts: (a) hand-loading, (b) track mining methods, (c) off-track mining methods, and (d) continuous mining. For many years, all of the coal was won by hand-mining methods. The first forms of mechanization •resembled the move from the horse •and buggy to the automobile. Early track mechanical mining methods were usually adaptations of the direct methods involved in hand-mining, with each improvement directed toward some specific process. A revolutionary development came about with off-track mining methods. The first efforts in this direction were provided by off-track mechanical loading machines, which loaded the cars •on track and differed from conventional track mining methods only in that the loading machines themselves operated on the mine floor. With the advent -of the shuttle car about ten years ago, true off-track mining came into being, and real progress in this direction began to be made.At the present time we •are at the beginning of a new era -.the era of continuous mining. There will be a period of development with some time needed before the system is generally applied throughout the industry, but -already enough •has been done to indicate rather dearly what the future holds in this direction."
