Artisanal and small-scale miners in Nigeria struggle to attract formal financing to upgrade their operations to a more sustainable form of small-scale mining operation. Literature shows that for an investment to attract formal sources of financing; the business must be considered creditworthy by potential lenders. This means that the credit risks associated with the investment must be bearable for the potential lender. This study looks at how artisanal and small-scale miners can attract formal funding, which will help them take the leap from artisanal state to a form of sustainable small-scale mining operation. This study evaluates the creditworthiness of artisanal and small-scale mining operators using key credit risk parameters identified in the literature and through primary investigation. A quantitative study is conducted on a sample of 100 artisanal and small-scale miner establishments in Nigeria to evaluate the effect of these identified credit risk parameters on creditworthiness. It is shown in this study that being a member of a mining cooperative society, which is a form of social collateral, best improves the chances of access to formal financing for miners within the sample group. This underpins the role of social collateral, in both the formal and informal economy, and its influence in improving the creditworthiness of a typical artisanal and small-scale miner.

Due to the modernisation of mines, traditional training methods may be supplemented to support the upskilling of supervisors in mines. A project was initiated by the SAMERDI SATCAP programme to demonstrate the “art of possibility” through a modern training methodology. Two exemplar digital supervisory leadership development modules for underground gold and platinum-group metal conventional and modernising mines, were developed for potential uptake by the mining industry. These exemplar modules were exhibited on a digital platform, towards leading and driving mining modernisation. The research adopted a mixed method approach that included a literature review, a review of an existing supervisory leadership development programme, data gathering, a pilot study, and stakeholder validation workshops. The research supported the development of exemplar digitised modules. The two digitised modules were showcased to the industry for potential adoption. Training slides, a facilitator guide, and a training video were developed for ease of use by industry. The training modules are generic and not specific to a particular mine. They may be used by multi-commodity mines, including gold and platinum-group metals, as ‘stand-alone’ modules. They are customisable, through consultation with relevant service providers for specific working environments. The findings indicated that both the traditional classroom training and the new digitised online learning solution offer advantages for supervisory leadership development. Digital learning is not a new concept for supervisors at mines and modern training methods are well-supported by supervisors in the industry. A ‘modernised’ training solution may consider a ‘blended’ learning approach that combines traditional training with digital methods.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometer range of 100 nanometres. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles and because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles make it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. DPM is a significant health hazard in underground mining operations, where the use of dieselpowered equipment in confined spaces can lead to high levels of exposure among people working in these environments. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), DPM has been linked to severe health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of lung cancer. Effective management of DPM is essential not only for protecting people’s health but also for ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining operational efficiency, and safeguarding the long-term viability of mining companies.

This article discusses the critical role of leadership in the technology adoption process within organizations, particularly in industries like mining, where innovation is essential for maintaining competitiveness and operational efficiency. It highlights the limitations of traditional technology adoption models, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Diffusion of Innovations (DOI), and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), which focus on individual factors and overlook the strategic and organizational roles of leadership. The study proposes the Ambidextrous Leadership-Technology Adoption (ALTA) model, which integrates leadership styles such as transformational, transactional, adaptive, and ambidextrous leadership into the technology adoption process. The model emphasizes the balance between exploration (fostering innovation) and exploitation (ensuring operational efficiency). The findings suggest that transformational leadership fosters innovation by encouraging risk-taking and creativity, while transactional leadership ensures efficient technology integration. The article also identifies key barriers to technology adoption, such as organizational resistance to change, which can be mitigated through adaptive leadership that addresses employee concerns. The research emphasizes the importance of a supportive organizational culture and cross-functional collaboration, which are essential for successful technology adoption. The study concludes by offering practical recommendations for leaders to foster a culture of innovation, manage resistance, and balance short-term efficiency with long-term technological advancement.

Growing global concern over the impacts of climate change, attributable largely to fossil fuel energy sources, has led to the widely shared goal for a ‘just transition’ to cleaner energy and reduced dependence on carbon-based fuels. As the world’s 14th biggest CO2 emitter and being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, South Africa must embark on a just transition pathway. This paper reviews expected coal mine closures and associated community vulnerabilities and local governance challenges in South Africa. Decommissioning schedules for all coal-fired power stations and operating coal mines are plotted, and 69 mining host communities and 21 municipalities are mapped, classified, and described. Community socio-economic profiles are measured using a set of SDG indicators and census data and municipalities assessed through financial audits. Our research shows that five coal-fired power plants (8.9 GW) and 15 coal mines (29.5 Mt/a) will probably close by 2030, and a further four plants (14 GW) and 23 mines (106 Mt/a) by 2040. Thus, the shift to cleaner energy will likely occur without the premature closures implied by the just transition. The impact of mine closure on the 2.5 million residents of host communities will be significant, particularly as levels of income, employment, and education are already very low and many municipalities are in financial distress. The South African approach to the just transition needs to take local realities into account and the narrative must support an effective transition that does not undermine energy security and economic growth.

A people-centric, systematic approach that involves different stakeholders is considered necessary to successfully address changes associated with modernizing the South African mining industry. In this paper we discuss the inclusion of various South African mining industry stakeholders, particularly the employees, in equipment design and development processes. Data was acquired through a literature review and inputs from South African mining industry stakeholders through focus group discussions, interviews, and an online survey. It was suggested that some of the areas that could be improved by the inclusion of employees in the process are design quality, ergonomics, equipment acceptance by the workforce, safety, efficiency, skills, insight into context of use, and early design iterations and identification of problems. Among the issues considered to be barriers to inclusion were lack of buy-in, lack of resources, difficulty in manufacturers accessing the mines, difficulties in involving too many people, intellectual property concerns, and unavailability of mine employees due to their key responsibilities. Identified critical factors in the equipment design and development process include iterative design, stakeholder participation throughout the process, needs analysis through consultation, and change management. A guideline was developed for worker inclusion in equipment design and development that could be used by the South African mining industry. The study identified several economic and social benefits of including stakeholders in the early stages of design and development. It is recommended that the South African mining industry considers using the developed guideline.

Buying centres are the first point of contact that determines whether ore will be considered as having sufficient provenance to be considered ethically sourced. The information that needs to be captured on the blockchain platform ranges from reports on in-loco inspections and audits of mining and purchase sites. This will guide passive and active monitoring of mining activities, trade-offs for identification systems, including biometrics for the registration of artisanal sellers, scrutiny on the selection of security measures and companies for buyer centres and stockpiling warehouses, evaluation of active and passive infrastructure security, and remote monitoring applications. Assistance with selection and training in geochemical testing instruments to determine the grade of ore material or concentrates and sorting, on-the-ground investigations, guidance on monitoring methods from stockpile and packing area along the transport route to the final destination are required.

Mineral processing produces a saleable product from high-cost ore. The Mineral Processing Engineer must constantly improve the separation to create the most value from the ore and reduce the associated costs. Graduate Metallurgists (or Chemical Engineers) have had the university theoretical training required, but often are illprepared to perform their plant roles. The in-work Metcelerate programme was designed specifically to develop the practical skills that Mineral Process Engineers require, by combining three key elements: 1. Knowledge transfer through self-paced, on-line training; 2. Practical skills acquisition through assessed, practical plant exercises; 3. Skills development through online tutorials. A final process improvement project adds significant value to the operation that far exceeds the training cost. Experience from Metcelerate clients has indicated improved staff retention, greater confidence, and pro-active process intervention.

The court in Baleni v Minister of Mineral Resources [2019] 2 SA 453 GP and [2020] 4 All SA 374 (GP), deliberated on the protection of rights of a community holding informal land tenure under Customary Law. The contention related to the necessary level of consent needed to acquire a mining right over such land. Moreover, whether consultations with such communities (Section 23, Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) or consent (Section 2, Interim Protection of Informal Land Rights Act, No. 31 of 1996 (IPILRA)) was required to acquire such right. The case has a significant bearing on the granting of mining rights in South Africa, and the discretion of the Minister of Mineral Resources (the Minister) in this regard. However, the objectives of the MPRDA and IPILRA do not dovetail, therefore consultation and consent are not mutually exclusive (Tlale, 2020). This note argues that, despite the resounding victory of this case, the peripheral basis surrounding the decision and the various levels of engagement require serious deliberation. Equally, the degree of reliance on the IPILRA requires clarity to avoid aborting the fundamental objectives of the MPRDA. This paper provides considerations and recommendations that may reduce or eliminate the tensions between the statutory and socio-economic rights in the application of the two statutes.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations continue to grow across sub-Saharan Africa and serve as a source of livelihood to many rural communities. Owing to safety, health, environmental, and social concerns, the occupation has been regarded as a menace in several sub-Sahara African countries. Recent studies in the field of ASM prescribe formalization as a way to tame its excesses while enhancing its potential. This paper explores the concept of formalization as it relates to ASM and how it is being affected by the funding situation. The paper seeks to address the question as to whether formalization of artisanal mining operations can achieve the desired results in view of the lingering credit constraints in this mining subsector. It is recommended that, as a way of extending the scope of formalization, focus should be placed not only on access to credit in ASM but also towards optimizing the creditworthiness of ASM firms, with the goal of improving the viability of the operations.

Since 2012, Ghana has been implementing local procurement regulations in the mining sector to broaden and deepen linkages between mining and other sectors of the economy. The regulations have been implemented in collaboration with the mining industry. This paper offers an in-depth analysis of how the local procurement regulations and related initiatives have been implemented so far. Primary data gathered with semi-structured interviews and secondary sources of data indicate a steady improvement in both in-country procurement and local manufacturing of inputs for the mining industry. There are, however, some challenges relating to tariff structure and support (financial and technical) for local suppliers and manufacturers to meet high standards and demands of the mining industry. This calls for a well-thought-out strategy and programme of activities to sustain and improve on progress made.

Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore (Kumba) continues to implement technologies focussed on improving safety and productivity; this forms part of the groups FutureSmart Mining initiative. The paper provides insights into the implementation of three technology solutions that improves the productivity of heavy mining equipment (HME). Enhancements to the short term mine planning (STMP) process, the effective use of a fleet management system (FMS) and the deployment of drones or Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) are discussed. The implementation of these and other technologies contributed to a 13% and 22% increase in the overall equipment efficiency (OEE) of the primary HME at Kumba’s Sishen and Kolomela mines respectively. Four key success factors (KSF) are highlighted namely that Kumba’s technology implementation drive is a key enabler to the company’s strategy, has a strong focus on value-add, is underpinned by a holistic and integrated implementation approach and is people-centric.

Imagine being able to see all the future planned mining activities in real time. This is exactly what SIMS (Short Interval Management System) will enable you to do. SIMS is a real time short interval control system that continuously measures and sets optimised plans for mining production processes. The system utilises algorithm-based software that takes resources (people, equipment, tasks, and workplaces) and gives you the best achievable plan. The algorithm was developed using methods found in the field of metaheuristics. A metaheuristic is a strategy to designed to efficiently search for optimal or near optimal solutions to problems that are very complex computationally. (Glover, 1986) There are several algorithms that have been developed to solve optimisation problems which are difficult to solve using traditional techniques. This has given rise to a field called evolutionary computing. (Simon, 2013) Examples of these techniques are genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, and ant colony optimisation. These methods are used to solve problems in a variety of fields. As an example, Kok and Lane (2012) used particle swarm optimisation for equipment allocation in a mechanised underground mining environment. The first SIMS deployment took place in a platinum underground tabular mechanised mine near Burgersfort (province?) from 2017-2019. This included the development from a paper-based system to a fully operational online system. SIMS then moved to a second site and is currently being tested in a second platinum underground tabular mechanised mine in South Africa. Full deployment of the system is currently being phased in. SIMS was built in response to issues that have been plaguing the mining industry for years. These issues are all aligned into one major problem statement: how can we optimise mining production processes without compromising safety? This product was developed by combining years of mining experience with software development. SIMS is based on a four-pillar concept. Safety, productivity, accountability, and business improvement. SIMS uses a set of pre-configured mining and production rules, and with the resources that are available, to determine valid short term production plans. A background algorithm then determines the optimum plan to be executed. The system continuously produces a set of job cards that are pushed to respective operators on their allocated tablets. The management portal component allows you to view and manage all current and planned work on any connected device available. This allows real time visibility of completed, current, and planned work to operators, service departments and management, i.e., seeing into the future.

Investing in a mining venture can be risky and stakeholders need transparent, unbiased reports to understand the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves a mining company holds. Readability and textual choice can be used consciously to manipulate perceptions, or it can be done unconsciously. This exploratory study investigates the readability and textual choice of supplementary Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The results indicate that narrative manipulation occurs in these reports through word choices that make the reports difficult to read, as well as specific narrative selections. This reduces the informational value of the reports. The results of the study will be useful to various stakeholders, such as mining company management, investors, investment specialists, financial analysts, and even employees and the general community, who all use these reports to make important decisions. It is also useful for the preparers of the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports, Competent Persons, and other technical specialists to be aware of readability and that certain textual choices can affect the interpretation of these reports. It is recommended that bodies such as the JSE and the SAMREC and SAMVAL Code committees consider adding a plain language requirement to regulations, guidelines, and codes to ensure transparent, unbiased, and objective reports.

Worker participation in equipment development can result in improved user acceptance and product quality. This paper focuses on worker engagement in equipment development processes in the South African minerals sector. Qualitative data was gathered during interviews with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and industry experts. A lack of inclusion in equipment design from workers from all organizational levels in mines was reported. Meanwhile, the historical context and workplace culture of the mining industry (including leadership, trust, training, performance, and remuneration factors) were evident barriers to the implementation of new technology. Worker engagement processes should include securing management commitment, creating multidisciplinary teams, effective facilitation, shared understanding of needs, training and development, and iterative design. Human-centred design approaches and independent platforms for engagement on equipment design requirements are recommended.

Efficient recovery of titanium from titaniferous magnetite ores continues to be a promising, yet unrealised opportunity, despite significant occurrences of titaniferous magnetite deposits worldwide and the existence of established industrial-scale practices. Current smelting processes only recover iron and vanadium, while the titanium is discarded in the waste slag. These slags are stockpiled and present massive environmental challenges, while still containing value as residual iron, vanadium and titanium. The complex mineralisation of these deposits does not allow for a significant opportunity to separate the titanium and magnetite minerals through normal physical upgrading processes. An upgrading process is therefore required to derive economic value. An efficient process technology could create an opportunity to unlock all three valuable commodities. South Africa’s Bushveld Complex, the largest known deposit of its kind in the world, is known for the high vanadium content but is also associated with relatively high concentrations of titaniferous magnetite. The quality of the Bushveld Complex was one of the drivers for the establishment of the Highveld Steel and Vanadium Company in the mid-1960s. The unfortunate demise of Highveld Steel and Vanadium created an opportunity to review current practices and evaluate the best available process for this complex ore in the context of the three elements of interest. Past and current processes, the nature of these deposits and the potential to recover titanium are assessed to highlight the potential of fluxless smelting of titaniferous magnetite to produce a titania-rich slag as feedstock to the pigment, titanium metal industry in conjunction with recovery of iron and vanadium. Ilmenite smelting practices are proposed as a suitable alternative to achieve the goal, namely sustainable processing. Mining is a significant economic activity in most Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, and mineral beneficiation has been identified, and controversially discussed as one of the possibilities for industrialisation. With many member countries being economically too small to muster the human and financial resources which beneficiation requires, the recently adopted Regional Mining Vision (RMV) envisages interventions at a regional level. An opportunity arose to ask industry role players to what extent the SADC appears to support regional beneficiation policy interventions undertaken by member countries, and what the challenges are in undertaking beneficiation regionally, as a complement to, or substitute for country-specific beneficiation policies. Twenty-five semistructured interviews were conducted with experts from SADC member countries during the 2019 Mining Indaba. Participants were divided on whether beneficiation should be carried out nationally or in the SADC region. While beneficiation could support value-keeping, key challenges were found to be infrastructure development (i.e. energy, water), scarce skills, access to technology and related costs, but also lack of free trade and movement. We submit that a more integrated beneficiation strategy for the SADC region, as is being developed through the RMV, would indeed be relevant in the future. The near depletion of high-grade ores, among other factors, has necessitated the consideration of alternative PGM sources. Various factors in the metallurgical processing of ores result in valuable minerals being lost to the tailings, and hence, PGM tailings are a possible alternative PGM source. However, as the value residing in PGM tailings remains unquantified and uncharacterised, there is a challenge in knowing the recoverable fraction of value contained in PGM wastes. This paper outlines the in-situ techniques of oxygen uptake and EDTA extraction for their possible use for determining the recoverable value in PGM tailings. This study investigates nickel laterite porosity and its impact on geometallurgical modelling. We performed a detailed mineralogical study on a set of Ni-laterite samples originating from New Caledonia. Samples were analysed after heavy liquid separation by automated SEM (QEMSCAN®). Laboratory and QEMSCAN® modelling results do not correlate well. Ideal physical mineral properties such as mineral densities used in QEMSCAN® modelling do not match the actual physical densities of minerals. The presence of empty or water-filled pores can represent important amounts in minerals and change the overall density of a particle. An adequate modelling of real density separation of minerals and particles should consider the water-filled pores. The first step towards a better simulation was to integrate pores larger than 10 μm in diameter filled with water (density of 1 g/cm3) in the QEMSCAN® database. The results approached, but did not match the physical laboratory results. The second step was to identify nanometer to micrometer sized pores, which could not be identified by QEMSCAN®. It was possible to identify nanometric pores in enstatite, Fe-oxides, serpentine, talc and quartz, and radial aggregates of fibrous Fe-oxyhydroxides with high resolution SEM (HR-SEM). The quantification of those micro-sized pores was performed on 2D HR-SEM images using image-processing techniques developed in Python to calculate the nanometer to micrometer scale pores in each mineral. Despite the limitation of converting 2D imaging into 3D objects, in our case pore sizes and porosities, we were able to calculate a mean value of porosity for each mineral. The integration of this porosity in the calculation of particle densities yielded a good match between the QEMSCAN® model and the laboratory experiment results. Despite the complexity of a strongly weathered material, such as Ni-laterites, a good knowledge of the ore makes it possible to build reliable processing models.
