The paper sets out the strategic importance of South Africa?s mining and minerals sector to the national economy. It relates how inexorable and accelerating urbanization and industrialization in emerging markets, especially in China and India, will translate into sustained demand for the minerals that South and southern Africa have in abundance. It warns that while countries buying raw materials from South Africa use these inputs as the basis on which to build value-added, employment-creating industries, South Africa is failing to exploit the economic benefits inherent in its mineral wealth, exacerbating its shortage of skills.

Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing `Mine to Mill' or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change - both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices - so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or `buy in'. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work - but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-AP's experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-AP's involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

Small scale mining (SSM) has been going on for a long time in Ghana. SSM was legalized by the PNDC Law 218, 1989. Since then there have been numerous gains from the SSM industry. The SSM is organized locally by the concession owner who engages people to work for the gold which he buys. Small scale miners (SSMs) use crudely made sluices in Ghana and, therefore, their production falls below what is expected. The SSMs work in groups and not as cooperatives, as they do in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Legalization of SSM has curbed gold smuggling considerably because a gold marketing entity is available. SSM poses certain environmental problems like pollution of water bodies and soils by mercury and indiscriminate digging of pits.

Buying centres are the first point of contact that determines whether ore will be considered as having sufficient provenance to be considered ethically sourced. The information that needs to be captured on the blockchain platform ranges from reports on in-loco inspections and audits of mining and purchase sites. This will guide passive and active monitoring of mining activities, trade-offs for identification systems, including biometrics for the registration of artisanal sellers, scrutiny on the selection of security measures and companies for buyer centres and stockpiling warehouses, evaluation of active and passive infrastructure security, and remote monitoring applications. Assistance with selection and training in geochemical testing instruments to determine the grade of ore material or concentrates and sorting, on-the-ground investigations, guidance on monitoring methods from stockpile and packing area along the transport route to the final destination are required.

A people-centric, systematic approach that involves different stakeholders is considered necessary to successfully address changes associated with modernizing the South African mining industry. In this paper we discuss the inclusion of various South African mining industry stakeholders, particularly the employees, in equipment design and development processes. Data was acquired through a literature review and inputs from South African mining industry stakeholders through focus group discussions, interviews, and an online survey. It was suggested that some of the areas that could be improved by the inclusion of employees in the process are design quality, ergonomics, equipment acceptance by the workforce, safety, efficiency, skills, insight into context of use, and early design iterations and identification of problems. Among the issues considered to be barriers to inclusion were lack of buy-in, lack of resources, difficulty in manufacturers accessing the mines, difficulties in involving too many people, intellectual property concerns, and unavailability of mine employees due to their key responsibilities. Identified critical factors in the equipment design and development process include iterative design, stakeholder participation throughout the process, needs analysis through consultation, and change management. A guideline was developed for worker inclusion in equipment design and development that could be used by the South African mining industry. The study identified several economic and social benefits of including stakeholders in the early stages of design and development. It is recommended that the South African mining industry considers using the developed guideline.

The use of drilling rigs to increasingly mechanize stope drilling has been acknowledged as important for the S.A. mining industry in it ís efforts to tackle the challenges of low productivity, AIDS and an ageing driller workforce. The spin-offs of increased safety, cost-effectiveness and better mining performance provide advantages to all?from the driller to the shareholder. However, implementation or product rollout has varied from outright success to dismal failure. A study of various cases by Novatek and Anglogold TDS showed clear reasons for these differences. Whereas the successes were characterized by clear objectives, accountability, user buy-in, a commitment to make the technology work and no-nonsense reporting, these were typically absent in failed implementations. The attitude at unsuccessful mines was to ?trial? the equipment?even subconsciously, a ?trial? is a test where failure becomes an acceptable outcome. During the study it became clear that mining management are not adequately trained to manage the often-tricky rollout process. They are often also not empowered or clearly mandated to deal with the organizational, human and technical issues that must dovetail to create a success. The output of the study was to develop a basic rollout process that could be used to formally manage the implementation of new drilling technology. Creating an alignment between the mine, workforce and supplier promotes a win-win situation that will not otherwise spontaneously arise.

The challenges of noise emission in the mining industry are well known. These challenges are exacerbated by the increasing trend towards mechanized mining, and there is general consensus that an effective industry-wide Buy Quiet initiative (BQI) will significantly assist in reducing noise-induced hearing loss by minimizing noise at its source. In its endeavours to improve the health of workers, the MOSH Noise Team has facilitated development of a proposed strategy and structure for a BQI. Extensive consultation with stakeholders resulted in support for the initiative. The MOSH Noise Team was advised to solicit the contributions of consulting mechanical and electrical engineers (CM&EEs), whose support is viewed as critical for realization of the initiative, since elimination of noise at source is an engineering challenge, and most procurement standards and specifications are set and managed by engineers. A workshop with CM&EEs and their representatives, as well as group environmental engineers (GEEs), confirmed the urgent need for the initiative and provided valuable insights. The workshop used obstacle based planning techniques to identify the factors on which the success of this BQI will depend. Most potential obstacles to the implementation revolved around proper scoping, leadership commitment, and companies? adherence to the initiative. Lack of involvement by the relevant stakeholders and economic issues were also identified as potential obstacles. Delegates at the workshop felt that the successful implementation of the industry-wide BQI, will depend on the mining industry addressing the specific obstacles. The most critical and urgent issue was identified as the formation of a properly constituted industry-wide BQI task team that includes representatives from critical stakeholder groups and which is mandated and empowered to drive the initiative.

Mineral commodity prices comprise one of the key criteria in the selection of mining stocks. We contend that of the three principal elements of mineral commodity prices, spot price, forward price and long-term price, one has a greater impact on the share valuation processes used by investors. This research paper examines the extent to which each of these elements influences the valuation process. The intention is to provide investors in mining stocks with a greater understanding of how fluctuations of commodity prices over time affect the prices of the mining stocks they hold, or intend to sell or buy. Three mineral commodities, gold, silver, and copper, were used as case studies, since market data on these commodities is readily available in the public domain. Nine market indices covering all three mineral commodities were selected. These are based on clearly defined criteria with the intention of eliminating ambiguity and to test for correlation with the three sets of mineral commodity prices. Nine mining companies, which were not the primary drivers of the relevant indices employed in the study, were used to validate the results obtained from the indices in order to avoid duplication of the same correlation during cross-checking. Each commodity price was adjusted for operating costs. For each market index, an average operating cost was calculated from the companies comprising its basket, while each company?s annual operating costs were used for the stocks of the individual companies examined. The data was collected for the period January 2004 to October 2010. This period was further split up into three sub-periods to account for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period that started in mid-2008. We conclude that mining stock prices are correlated with mineral commodity prices, but with spot and forward prices exhibiting stronger correlations than long-term price. This finding should be useful for evaluation purposes. Where cash flow methodologies such as discounted cash flow or earnings per share are used to value ordinary shares and commodity prices are required to estimate future cash flows, the findings suggest that spot prices should be used as opposed to long-term prices. The work reported in this paper is part of a current MSc research study at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Worker participation in equipment development can result in improved user acceptance and product quality. This paper focuses on worker engagement in equipment development processes in the South African minerals sector. Qualitative data was gathered during interviews with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and industry experts. A lack of inclusion in equipment design from workers from all organizational levels in mines was reported. Meanwhile, the historical context and workplace culture of the mining industry (including leadership, trust, training, performance, and remuneration factors) were evident barriers to the implementation of new technology. Worker engagement processes should include securing management commitment, creating multidisciplinary teams, effective facilitation, shared understanding of needs, training and development, and iterative design. Human-centred design approaches and independent platforms for engagement on equipment design requirements are recommended.

"Nickel electroplating from sulphate electrolyte is an efficient process. To achieve good quality cathode, however, parameters such as temperature, nickel concentration, pH, electrode alignment, electrolyte flowrate and additives must be optimised, because these affect cathode morphology and current efficiency. It is also important to control the clarity and contamination of the electrolyte, as these have a considerable effect on the quality of the cathode surface. Delamination, surface roughness and pitting on the cathode surface can be caused by incorporation of solid particles or impurities form the electrolyte. Three types of solid particles were investigated: cuprous selenide, barium/ lead sulphate (co-precipitated) and ferric hydroxide. These particles can be found in industrial electrolytes, especially if there is a problem with the filtration step or contaminants have reacted to form insoluble particles. A rotating cylinder Hull cell was used for this investigation. It is found that the effects on morphology depend on the type of solid, concentration, particle size, current density and electrolyte flowrate. Cuprous selenide is the most detrimental, especially at higher concentrations, higher current densities and low flowrates. Increased rotational speed offers a uniform sheet of fine gas bubbles across the surface of the cathode which reduces the thickness of the diffusion layer of liquid adjacent to the cathode and increases the rate of mass transport to the cathode from the bulk liquid. INTRODUCTION Electrowinning operations are important when recovering associated by-products of nickel production, such as copper, cobalt and zinc, from pressure leach solutions. The base metal mineralization associated with platinum-group metal (PGM) production yields significant quantities of copper and nickel as by-products. The base metal refinery is vital in PGM processing as it increases the PGM concentration from mined ore by a factor of 400, in comparison with concentration by flotation (20 times) and pyrometallurgical processing (20 times) (Crundwell et al., 2011). Anglo American Platinum Ltd produces nickel cathodes by electrowinning and purges sodium from the base metal refinery in the form of sodium sulphate at the Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR), as shown in Figure 1. This is the Sherritt acid leach process used in most base metal refineries to ensure no loss of PGMs and shows the subsequent purification steps for copper and nickel. Other refineries in Zimbabwe, such as Bindura and Empress, use the Outokumpu leach process (Pavlides, 2001)."

Tanzania is a country with a variety of mineral deposits, including metallic minerals, gemstones, mineral fuels, industrial minerals, and critical minerals. This study provides an overview of mining legal framework, mineral occurrence and production, challenges in the mining sector, and government initiatives. The aim is to demonstrate the development of the mining sector in Tanzania and explore the potential for further mining investment in the country. The mineral production data showed generally increasing trends over the years, for example, gold production increased from 42 tonnes in 2018/2019 to around 50 tonnes in 2023/2024. Despite the growth, the mining sector encounters several challenges, including a lack of detailed geological information on mineral deposits, inadequate infrastructures in some remote mining sites, the existence of informal artisanal miners, and mineral smuggling. The Tanzanian government has introduced several initiatives to address these challenges, including carrying out the highresolution airborne geophysical survey to increase geological information in some areas, the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining, establishing mineral markets to combat mineral smuggling, and encouraging mineral value addition within the country.

"SynopsisThis paper assesses the effectiveness of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH) and its potential to improve mine health and safety in South African mines. Developed by the Chamber of Mines, which represents the majority of the country's large scale mining employers, MOSH was devised to accelerate progress towards achieving health and safety milestones, which were set by tripartite agreement in 2003. The paper documents and builds on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) in 2011 that evaluated MOSH strategy, structures, and process of implementation.The study found that MOSH operated across the mining sector, was directed and dominated by experts and, despite best efforts to include other stakeholders, was led by employers. Statutory worker health and safety representatives and structures were not integrated into the complex change process developed by MOSH. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) and organized labour were ambivalent about direct involvement in MOSH and preferred regulatory measures to enforce the participation of mines. MOSH interventions were not targeted at mines with a poor health and safety record, and MOSH lacked a baseline from which to track impacts on sector-wide health and safety performance. The leading practices most widely adopted by mines were designed to improve, rather than fundamentally alter, existing practice. Although the depth of engagement with MOSH among stakeholders and on mine sites varied, mining companies, labour representatives, and the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) saw the programme as significant.IntroductionIn 2011, the Chamber of Mines commissioned the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the rollout of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH). CSMI, based in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an independent research centre conducting health and safety research relevant to all major stakeholders in the mining sector. "SynopsisGoing beyond transformation claims contained in employment equity scorecards and industry compliance reports, this article provides qualitative insight into the initiatives employed and challenges experienced by mining companies in a quest to transform the mining industry. Perceptions expressed during in-depth interviews with 10 senior executives showed that the assumption that mining companies are reluctant to transform is erroneous. Results from this study suggest buy-in and commitment to transformation. This article describes specific initiatives undertaken by mining companies to transform. The most notable initiatives include staff recruitment efforts to appoint historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs), staff development initiatives, as well as community development. The findings furthermore contextualize the challenges experienced by industry participants in their quest to transform. Despite accusations that industry participants are not taking responsibility for the implementation of the transformation agenda, government needs to recognize that they too have a role to play and need to appreciate and assist in the current challenges experienced by the industry.IntroductionWe need a mining sector that works. Mining employs over half a million people. It is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in our country. It also contributes about 20 billion rand directly to tax revenue. Mining also makes a far larger contribution as a buyer of goods and services, and a supplier of inputs to other sectors of our economy and other economies around the globe’ said President Jacob Zuma during the 2014 State of the Nation Address (Zuma, 2014). However, despite apparent commitment from government, enforced compliance with social and labour plans, regulations and Mining Charter targets, the South African mining industry is slow to gain local and international investor trust (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Mashego, 2013).Industry players acknowledge that their context has changed – creating various challenges (Davis, 2014). In the past few years, such challenges included subdued commodity prices, increased working costs, constrained infrastructure, and high labour costs, coupled with poor levels of productivity, strained labour-management relations, an uncertain regulatory environment, and the inevitable maturation of the industry (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Davenport, 2014). Mining affected communities also became more cognisant of their rights, and politicians more vocal in their expectations from their relationships with the mining giants (Davis, 2014). One of the main issues that contributed to the difficult operating conditions was claims from organized labour and Minister Shabangu that this industry is too slow to transform. Specific claims were made in terms of employment equity, fair salaries and wages for mineworkers, housing and living conditions, health and safety issues, and general working conditions (Limpitlaw et al., 2005; Miningmx, 2013; Shabangu, 2010). These claims were followed by what Gill Marcus, Reserve Bank Governor, explained as ‘unprotected strike action [that] has escalated into an uncontrolled, violent and unlawful landscape, led by a mob mentality in the absence of formal and recognised leaders’ (Mavuso,2013)."

This article discusses the critical role of leadership in the technology adoption process within organizations, particularly in industries like mining, where innovation is essential for maintaining competitiveness and operational efficiency. It highlights the limitations of traditional technology adoption models, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Diffusion of Innovations (DOI), and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), which focus on individual factors and overlook the strategic and organizational roles of leadership. The study proposes the Ambidextrous Leadership-Technology Adoption (ALTA) model, which integrates leadership styles such as transformational, transactional, adaptive, and ambidextrous leadership into the technology adoption process. The model emphasizes the balance between exploration (fostering innovation) and exploitation (ensuring operational efficiency). The findings suggest that transformational leadership fosters innovation by encouraging risk-taking and creativity, while transactional leadership ensures efficient technology integration. The article also identifies key barriers to technology adoption, such as organizational resistance to change, which can be mitigated through adaptive leadership that addresses employee concerns. The research emphasizes the importance of a supportive organizational culture and cross-functional collaboration, which are essential for successful technology adoption. The study concludes by offering practical recommendations for leaders to foster a culture of innovation, manage resistance, and balance short-term efficiency with long-term technological advancement.

A. W. S. Schumann The first reason for todays success lies in the very high standard which was set by our speakers today and I think that we owe a very special vote of thanks to Messrs P. M. C. Wilson, A. A. Oakes, M. J. Deats, A. C. Coetzee, R. E. Burnton and J. G. Ferguson. This, however, cannot account for the fact that there was a tremendous response even before anyone knew who was going to speak or what they were going to speak about. I suggest that the response was enthusiastic because people expected a more informal gathering with a greater opportunity for feedback, for an exchange of views and for questions and answers. The very popularity of the idea has defeated its own ends to some extent. This gathering is too big and many people must have been left with questions unanswered. Possibly one should arrange for a number of meeting places-there are many in the Chamber and the surrounding mining houses-and then have separate meetings in the morning with joint reporting session in the afternoon. Alternatively, we could have a symposium after the colloquium, using Webster's definition of a symposium as as 'a drinking party of merry fellows'. We all know that it is easy to discuss mining into the small hours. Obviously one cannot summarise todays papers and discussions, but I would like to make a few comments on technical matters and after that I would like to speak for a moment about what I see as major trends or tendencies which arise from discussions of this nature. Regarding the question of placing a village on a mine or away from a mine, I would mention that there is quite a body of literature on the adverse sociological effects on the development of children in any community in which the great majority of parents share the same occupation. It is something to be avoided if possible. We discussed the concept of the moving stockpile. If this is proved to be successful, it could save a considerable amount of money for Escom who could then avoid the construction of very large and costly staithes which are now regarded as parts of power stations. One does not see why both a moving stockpile and a staith should be necessary. By the way, speaking of Escom, I see that Mr Bob Scott is here; he has stopped pulling my leg by saying that we sell stone to Escom; perhaps someone has told him that if this is true, it must be the cheapest stone you can buy in this country. My next point relates to the use of epidiascope. It struck me again that this instrument which provides a visual image to accompany your message, can be very effective if it is properly used. These papers speak of a great deal of hard work which went into their preparation, and one really feels that the authors should have taken a few minutes more to prepare their drawings specifically for the epidiascope. There should be nothing on the drawing which is not necessary to illustrate a particular point and there should be nothing on the drawing which is not visible from the back of the hall. The rock mass properties such as deformability and permeability are highly dependent on the existence of cracks. The Ratio of Crack Opening Dependency (RCOD) was proposed as a new index to evaluate the deformability of infinite jointed rock mass. The RCOD is defined as the ratio of total amount of crack opening and the total deformation of jointed rock mass. The theoretical relation between the RCOD and the effective compliance of jointed rock mass is discussed and confirmed through two-dimensional numerical analysis by the SC-DDM, together with the applicability to the rock engineering. "The South African ferrochrome industry has been faced with various challenges during the past few years, such as influences from the market, manpower strikes, China’s control over the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore from South Africa, and electricity supply constraints, placing increased pressure on the local industry to improve output in order to remain globally competitive. The year 2016 brought a dramatic change in the local ferrochrome industry, being marked by higher chrome ore prices and the takeover of some idle smelters.This study investigates the methods of technology acquisition used in various parts of the ferrochrome smelter value chain throughout a business cycle, and whether there is a preference for a specific acquisition in an explicit part of the value chain. The study also considers whether companies prefer to partner with local or global institutions for collaborative development, and the methods used by companies to protect their technologies.IntroductionSouth Africa holds the world’s largest chrome ore reserves and was the world’s largest producer of ferrochrome until 2012, when China became the leading ferrochromeproducing country. South Africa’s chrome ore (chromite) supply into the Chinese market has risen significantly from 36% of China’s total chrome ore imports in 2010 to more than 70% in 2016 (Fowkes, 2014; Creamer, 2017). China controls the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore from South Africa (Fowkes, 2014). China’s high import rate of chrome ore has resulted in ferrochrome prices being driven down and a depressed ferrochrome market. The South African industry meets the chrome ore demands but loses out on ferrochrome beneficiation.Furthermore, the local ferrochrome industry has been threatened with the overall poor competitiveness over the past few years, resulting in four of the eight producers ceasing operations at the beginning of 2016. Challenges experienced by the producers, some of which are directly linked to production costs, include influences from the market, productivity that was affected by wildcat strikes, China’s control over the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore, and electricity supply issues (Fowkes, 2014, 2013; Biermann, Cromarty, and Dawson, 2012). Ferrochrome production is energy-intensive and South African producers have faced higher electricity costs, electricity supply complications, and a weaker currency exchange rate since 2009."

"Investment in diamond exploration has been declining over the past decade, in spite of positive long-term industry fundamentals and a growing interest in diamonds as an investment category. The lack of new significant discoveries in recent years has eroded investor confidence, yet no new discoveries are possible without investment in exploration. Junior ‘mine finders’ have been the hardest hit. Their agility, tenacity, and appetite for risk are not sufficient to attract the funding required, even at the greenfield stage. Developing new discoveries into mineral resources can be crippling without solid financial support. Junior incubators could play a crucial role, especially at the project evaluation stage – but where are they? Alternatives to traditional funding mechanisms have become available, many still untested in the junior diamond exploration space. Valuable lessons can be drawn from the past and used to inform emerging new strategies. IntroductionDiamonds are the ultimate expression of love. Their ancient and timeless allure continues to influence consumer emotions and behaviours across continents, cultures and age groups. Analysts are predicting a sustained supplydemand shortfall in the years ahead which will trend diamond prices generally upwards. With positive long-term industry fundamentals, one cannot help but wonder why funding for diamond exploration and development projects is so scarce.Investment in exploration across commodities – including diamonds – has been declining for a number of years, reaching a historic eleven-year low early in 2017. The lack of major diamond discoveries in recent years has done little to strengthen the case for investing in diamond projects, yet no new discoveries can be made without investment in exploration.Global estimates of known carats in the ground stand currently at 2.5 billion carats, which equates to around 18 years of production at current levels of 140 million carats (mct) per annum. Sustainable replenishment of depleting diamond resources is possible only through the development of new discoveries. This is what junior explorers are best at – but they need investors to fund their evaluation activities from early in the project development continuum."

The near depletion of high-grade ores, among other factors, has necessitated the consideration of alternative PGM sources. Various factors in the metallurgical processing of ores result in valuable minerals being lost to the tailings, and hence, PGM tailings are a possible alternative PGM source. However, as the value residing in PGM tailings remains unquantified and uncharacterised, there is a challenge in knowing the recoverable fraction of value contained in PGM wastes. This paper outlines the in-situ techniques of oxygen uptake and EDTA extraction for their possible use for determining the recoverable value in PGM tailings. Both methods have shown efficiency in determining the weathering of sulphide minerals and sulphide-bearing ores. Keywords: PGM tailings, tailing retreatment, oxidation, oxygen decay, EDTA
