The tensile and shear strengths of frozen soil and the compressive strengths of ice and frozen soil were measured These tests showed that the strength of ice and of frozen soil increased as the temperature was decreased. A method is presented for the measurement of thermal conductivity and specific heat of earth and ice. Using the parameters thermal conductivity, specific heat and density, the thermal diffusivity was calculated. Results of thermal property tests establish water as the major variable contributing to thermal property values. INTRODUCTION During the last few years, a considerable interest has developed in underground storage of cryogenic liquids such as liquid natural gas. Because of its economy and safety, underground storage is being used. Before underground caverns could be seriously considered, however, the strength and thermal characteristics of the soil had to be obtained. Methods are presented herein for measuring tensile, compressive and shear strengths, specific heats and thermal conductivities. The tests were performed on two soils at temperatures from ambient to -195C. Because it is difficult to find data in the literature that pertain to a particular soil, ice was used to evaluate some of the experimental procedures. Some of our ice data are compared to the published values. PHYSICAI, PROPERTIES SOIL SELECTION AND SAMPLE PREPARATIONS The physical and thermal tests were performed on recompacted samples of two typical soils that might be encountered in underground caverns: a gray, fire clay that had been pulverized and mixed with water into a pliable mud; and a brown, sandy silt that was dug from a dry river bank and subsequent1y mixed with tap water. The moisture content of the test specimens was 17 to 22 per cent (based on the wet weight of the soil). This amount of water nearly saturated the silt, but the clay was well below the saturation point. The soils are partially described by the sieve analyses (Fig. 1) which show the particle size distribution of the coarser than 44 micron portion of the soils. The curves also show that approximately 75 per cent of the clay and 20 per cent of the silt are finer than 44 microns. The particle size seems to affect some of the physical properties, and the finer than 44 micron portion is important in the thermal conductivity test. Physical specimens were cut with a bandsaw from frozen blocks of the soil. The specimens were then sanded and kept frozen until after they were tested. They were stored at the approximate test temperature for several hours. Then, to equilibrate the samples to the test temperature, they were stored at the temperature at least an hour before they were tested. TEST EQUIPMENT An Instron, which is a constant speed gear-driven instrument, applied force to the samples and drew stress-strain plots of the test. All of the samples were strained at 0.02 in./min. All of the physical tests were conducted in a temperature cabinet that controlled the temperature to 1C. TENSILE STRENGTH Briquette or "dog-bone" shaped tensile specimens were pulled with suitably shaped jaws. Government aid, regulation, and participation in the mineral industry are not new; they date back to the time when man first adopted communal living. Even in primitive tribal life, the obtaining of arrowhead or ceramic materials, washing of gold, or mining of copper were specialized activities, under tribal sponsorship. Later, when kingdoms, dynasties, and hierarchies developed, titles to mining properties were held by the sovereign or the state, work usually being done by slaves. Title acquisition through denouncement developed in Europe in the late Middle Ages and spread to the Western Hemisphere with the Spanish and Portuguese empires. Denouncements still recognized the rights of the sovereign in the requirement to pay royalties, which practice continues in many places today. Thus, anyone who views government participation in mineral activity as "encroachment" has no historical perspective. Only in a few countries and for a few generations have private interests enjoyed the right to exploit mineral deposits without the specific consent of the sovereign or without payment-of-royalty. Governments and the mineral industry have been linked together by other factors. Governments have had special interest in metals and minerals as stores of value and for armaments. Spanish conquests in the New World were energized by the lure of gold and silver. Pursuit of gold led to the American seizure of California in the days of the Forty-niners. The strategic importance of minerals in our own times has called for special steps to stimulate production in national emergencies and to prevent the enemy from acquiring mineral supplies. Our export controls to deny certain minerals to unfriendly countries, purchases for Government stockpile, and subsidies for domestic production are examples. Production regulation by state governments of oil and gas has become a well established routine. In brief, the mineral industry has never lacked aid, regulation, and participation by governments. The entrepreneur who wishes to explore for or develop minerals must deal with governments in most areas before he can begin, because mineral rights are reserved by them. A computer system was developed by Texasgulf's Corporate Data Center (at Raleigh, North Carolina) to evaluate the economics of proposed new projects and to determine the incremental expansion effects of existing projects. The Corporate Treasurer, Controller, and Senior Staff Members of the corporate office guided the project with advice from the Chairman's office. After consideration of commercially available programs, the decision was made to develop an in-house investment system. The main specification was that the program must do the accounting calculations on the computer exactly as done by hand in the corporate office. No average "approximations" or values were allowed. Also, the capability to change the calculation procedures quickly was a must. The experience gained in developing a program to evaluate Gulf Coast off-shore oil lease-bids was used to develop an investment system. Several ideas were taken from A Programming Language (APL) concepts. An investment functional language was developed, and computer programs were written to process the functional language. One feature is a print-out of the model in English. The English print- out assists the debugging and documentation of a model. The major expansion at the Kidd Creek mine was the test case for the new system. After the results were approved and accepted for the base case, many sensitivity runs were made. Numerous additional models were developed to reflect the investment opportunities at other sites. An existing edit program was used to build the models and to systematically organize all the data for different projects. Remote input-output capabilities were added to the system, allowing data to be prepared and submitted at one Texasgulf site with the results printed at another location within minutes. The project has been well accepted by Texasgulf's senior management. Growth of the system is now in the areas of (1) merging individual projects into the corporate financial statements, (2) use of classical forecasting to project future costs, and (3) coupling the investment program to mine planning and general ledger systems. Also, the system is now being installed on an interactive computer system to provide faster turn-around time and more flexibility.

The sampling of precious metal deposits entails inherent problems due to the low mineral abundances, high mineral specific gravities, skewed grade distributions and wide ranges of mineral particle sizes. Sampling practices and precautions are discussed with particular attention to each of the tripartite stages of sampling - sample acquisition, sample preparation and sample assaying. Practical examples of approaches to the sampling problem are given and some examples of significant sources of error are provided from gold and silver deposits in North America.

With each year bringing the exploration of deeper and deeper producing horizons in the effort to maintain production, the problem of lifting the oil to the surface is continually becoming more difficult. Flowing and gas-lift wells eventually decline to such a point that pumping is necessary. The increasing loads on sucker rods resulting from deeper pumping operations are approaching the ultimate strength of the rods with consequent reduction in the factor of safety. With this diminishing factor of safety, the vibratory stresses causing fatigue, crystallization, and ultimate fracture become more important. These vibratory stresses are the result of varied pumping conditions which, if properly understood and investigated, may be eliminated to a great extent. To accomplish this purpose, a recording dynameter has been developed which gives an indicator card showing the actual load on the polished rod at each point of the pumping cycle. Recording Dynamometer The instrument consists of a dynamometer head of the piston and cylinder type filled with castor oil, and a recording device, the movable card holder being connected with the dynamometer through a system of levers and the hollow spring gage connected with the fluid chamber of the dynamometer by a high-pressure flexible tube. The dynamometer head is hung from the beam with an ordinary hanger and lugs on the cylinder, while the piston is attached to the polished rod. The movable card holder actuated through levers moves in a vertical direction pro-portionate to the movement of the polished rod. The recording arm of the hollow spring gage inscribes on the card the pressure at all times. Thus by proper scales, the indicator card gives the load on the polished rod at all points in the pumping cycle. Fig. 1 shows the hookup of the recording dynamometer at a pumping well.

Introduction In 1956, the first mobile crusher was installed in a limestone quarry in Hover, Germany. These early mobile crushers solved the problem of wet and soft ground conditions that did not permit the use of haulage trucks due to the high cost of building and maintaining the haulage roads. Quarry operators also wanted to take advantage of continuous belt conveyor haulage systems and the resulting cost savings. European mines, particularly the coalfields, are in soft materials that allow use of bucket wheel excavators and their following continuous haulage system of belt conveyors. Quarry operators, with this background knowledge of belt conveyors in mining, easily accepted the conveyor concept, once in-pit mobile crushing solved the problem of size reduction of mine-run-rock required for conveyor application. Four years after the initial mobile crusher installation, the first report published on the subject appeared in the December 1960 issue of Mining Engineer (Kochanowsky, 1960). With this early background and basis for direction, mobile in-pit crushing and conveying have increased to more than 74 installations. The capacity, type of crusher, and material being processed appear in Table 1. These data in Table 1 indicate that experience to data has been heavily influenced by limestone installations of less than 1 kt/h (1102 stph). Most of these installations were directly fed by a mine face excavator because of the limestone quarry ground conditions. Crusher Configurations Crushers systems developed to date have varying mobility capabilities. These range from fully mobile units that are used continuously in this mode to fixed, permanently located in-pit crushers. The following terms are presented to help distinguish the range of mobility within the configurations of "mobile" crusher systems planned or now in use. Mobile Crusher The crusher works at the mine face, is directly fed by an excavator, and moves in unison with the excavator on its own transport mechanism as the mining progresses. An example is the unit delivered in 1976 to Yamama Cement Co. in Reyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Surf ace subsidence is rapidly becoming an important environmental consideration of active as well as abandoned mining operations. The damages attributed to this phenomenon have been witnessed in both rural and urban areas and include land settlement and fracturing, structural damages to surface buildings or facilities and disruption or contamination of ground water supplies. The problem of mining subsidence has gained considerable emphasis in the Appalachian coalfield. The increased mining activity over the past few years and the particular topographic conditions, lithologic and structural environment, mining methods and hydrological patterns are all factors which have contributed to specific subsidence characteristics in this region. The objective of this paper is to discuss and review the most widely accepted methods of subsidence prediction above longwall as well as partial extraction systems in Appalachia. These include an accurate and easy to apply empirical method, which has been developed entirely from field information pertaining to the Appalachian coalfield and incorporates both geometrical and geological information of the panel in question. The second method is a development of influence functions and is founded on the zone area approach. Both methods, originally derived for longwall mining, have been expanded to include room and pillar applications and have been widely used by the mining industry in the Appalachian coalfield.

Diffiusion of magnesium into the surface of LiF crystals to controlled depths and subsequent heat treatments provided a wide range of surface zone harahesses and structure, The bend strength of the LiF crystals was increased by as much as an or-dev of magnitude. Ductility was achieved when dislocation generation occurred in the diffusion zone or when dislocations penetrated to the surface from the intevior. A critical surface hardness of 130 to 140 kg per sq mm was found helozu which generation could take place in the diffusion zone and ahoue which the zone was impenetrable, This hardness was obtainable by several methods, among them the aging of quenched MgF2 -LiF solutions to produce MgF, precipitation. Maximum hardness was ohtained in quenched specimens with no visihle evidence of MgF,. Diffusion-zone formation followed a parabolic rate law and an activation energy of 20.9 kcal per mole was obtained for the process. RECENTLY, the properties of ionic crystals as related to surface condition have been receiving much attention, specifically the transitions between ductile and brittle behavior. Originally Joffe 1 showed that NaCl crystals could be made ductile by immersion in water and related this to the elimination of surface microcracks. Aerts and DeKeyser 2 and Gorur 3' have subsequently shown that ionic crystals are inherently ductile and are embrittled through contact with air. Machlin and Murray4 hypothesized that a layer of NaCIO3 produced by contact of ozone with NaCl induced embrittlement by acting as a barrier to outward dislocation flow. westwood,' Rosenberg and Cadoff,9 and Bilello and cadoff' have reported surface strengthening of LiF crystals by coating with a magnesium compound and then heat treating for adherence. The major effect of the coat was to inhibit dislocation-slip lines from reaching the specimen surface. westwoods showed microcrack formation and fracture to be caused by slip-band interactions at the surface. The material presented in this paper is an extension of the work reported earlier by Bilello, Rosenberg, and cadoff'6,7 and illustrates the wide range of surface properties and bulk behavior obtainable by use of heat-treated magnesium-diffused surface regions in LiF crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The LiF single crystals were obtained from the Harshaw Chemical Co. Some batch to batch variation was observed; therefore all specimens for a given test series were cleaved from the same crystal. The typical dimension used was 1 by 0.1 by 0.40 in. Surface damage resulting from cleavage was removed by chemically polishing in a 2 pct NH4OH solution. Each group of specimens was given a vacuum anneal at 700°C for 4 hr to provide a base standard for measuring comparative effects of various surface treatments. To produce the reacted surface zone, the annealed specimens were immersed in a boiling suspension of MgF, in doubly distilled HzO, agitated slbwly for 30 sec, removed, and dried at room temperature. Uniform coatings of MgF, were deposited with a thickness of approximately 5 mils. It should be noted that this technique can be modified for use with crystals which are soluble in water by using boiling absolute alcohol as the dissolving medium. This was found effective for the coating of NaCl with MgF2. The diffused surface zone was obtained by annealing the coated samples at elevated temperatures in a vacuum of lob4 mm Hg. Penetration depth was controlled by varying the annealing time from 1/2 to 28 hr. After heat treatment, the samples were tested for bend strength and hardness. Load was applied by four-point bending in a hard-beam testing jig. Four-point rather than three-point bending was used to provide a wide area of constant stress and to minimize the effect of localized inhomogenities in the specimen. The deflection rate was 8 x min-' and the distance between knife edges was 1/4 in. Load-time curves were obtained from a chart recorder coupled to the machine and converted to resolved shear stress on the shear plane vs deflection, as plotted in the figures. The unstressed portions of the sample outside of the two outer knife edges were used for the microhardness studies. This paper deals with the methods of mining the high-grade clays of California. The fact that the majority of the clay pits in the state are operated on a scale that is small by comparison with most metal mines causes a diversity of methods and gives rise to problems of selection of the method best suited to given conditions. Two or three operators in California produce approximately 500 tons per day of a single kind of clay from a single pit. About five varieties of clay are mined on a scale of 200 to 400 tons per day; not over 15 varieties are mined on a scale of 50 to 200 tons per day; and more than 50 varieties are mined at the rate of less than 50 tons per day. It is the aim of this paper to delimit, as far as the data at hand permit, the conditions and scale of operations that favor the selection of each dominant method of mining that is actually being applied at California properties. Details of the occurrence and utilization of the clays of California have been given in a recent bulletin1 and will not be considered here. Geographical and Geological Features of California Clay Deposits The greater part of the high-grade clays consumed by clay-working plants in California is mined from one of three producing areas in the state: (1) Lincoln, Placer County, on the eastern edge of the Sacramento valley, 30 miles northeast of Sacramento; (2) Ione, Amador County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, 38 miles northeast of Stockton, and 12 miles west of Jackson, one of the important towns of the famous Mother Lode gold-mining district; and (3) Alberhill, Riverside County, 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Other districts of minor importance are near Cardiff and Carlsbad, San Diego County, and El Toro and San Juan Capistrano, Orange County. In addition, there are a number of isolated properties in various parts of the state.

This report is the accumulation of eight years of experience on only one small phase in the business of oil production. It is not intended as a final report but rather as a progress report dealing with the internal corrosion of oil field dehydrating tanks. The corrosion of dehydrating tanks continues to be a problem in the production of crude oil. The deterioration hy corrosion of these tanks falls into three general classifications: (1) Atmospheric corrosion of exterior areas, (2) corrosion of the underside of deck and the rafters and top area of the upper row of staves in that part of the tank which is known as the vapor space, and (3) corrosion of the bottom and shell areas, and the steam coils which are normally immersed in water and thus exposed to the corrosive action of the water. Atmospheric corrosion is primarily a paint problem, and has been omitted in this discussion. The corrosion in the vapor space, in this company's experience, which has been of great concern only in one area. has also been omitted in this discussion. The third, and most troublesome type of corrosion, and the one with which this report deals, is that which occurs in the water-exposed areas of dehydrating tanks, and, to a lesser degree. in some stock tanks. The operating temperature of these waters varies from 80°F to 160°F and the salt counts run from a few thousand to as high as 25.000 parts per million. Corrosion in these tanks occurs in three forms: (1) pits, (2) ringworm type of attack along the vertical and horizontal bolt seams, and (3) as a general attack, spread over a wide area. Steam Coils In dehydrating tanks, our experience has been that the steam coils are the first to show signs of corrosion, and then the shell and bottom areas. This action is not uniform throughout this company's operations. Some installations have coil troubles with very little tank trouble, and some show just the opposite. But in the majority of cases the coils are the more seriously corroded areas. This may be partly due to the fact that we have tried by periodic application to keep a protective coating on the interior areas of the tanks, and some protection has been afforded by these coatings. Through the years several types of hot and cold coatings have been tried with many various methods of cleaning the steel, ranging from use of cleaning solvents to hot and cold Oakite washes, as well as sandblasting. Although experience has shown that a longer life expectancy of a coating is possible after a very thorough steel cleaning job, it has still been necessary to recoat these tanks at least every two or three years. Until a few years ago, vertical spiral steam coil bundles were installed when the tanks were originally erected. When these coils needed replacement, in some cases within 18 months, it was necessary to remove a couple of shell staves to accomplish this task. This required a down time period of several days and was often very inconvenient to the production operations of the leases. This problem was considered on the basis that the coils were expendable, and thus. to eliminate any unnecessary down time when changing coils, the vertical spiral coils were discarded in favor of horizontal flat coils which could be taken in and out of the tanks by way of the cleanout openings, and put together with unions. This made a fairly easily replaceable and repairable coil. But it was still very much of a nuisance when repairs were necessary. Efforts to increase the useful life of the dehydrating tanks led to the adoption of galvanized tanks at an increased initial cost. The zinc coating was depended upon for protection and no other protective coatings were applied. In July, 1944. during the development of a new lease, a 3-ring 1,500 bbl, black iron water tank was converted into a dehydrating tank with steam coils to handle the new production. This tank was coated inside with a cold, brushed-on coating, for protection against corrosion. After approximately 18 months of service, holes developed in the tank and the steam coils. The tank was emptied and cleaned for repairs. The coils were so badly pitted that it was felt advisable to replace them. Coating Becomes Loose Inspection of the tank showed the protective coating to be still in place but loose, and numerous blisters were in evidence. A closer inspection showed that the interior of this tank was so badly pitted under the coating that any further attempt to use the tank was inadvisable. This tank was therefore discarded and a new galvanized tank ordered and set up at considerable expense and inconvenience. In April, 1946, another dehydrating tank installation was made on an adjoining lease. This installation consisted of a 1,500 bbl. 3-ring galvanized tank with two sets of flat steam coils 12 in. and 24 in. up from the bottom. In September, 1947. seventeen months after installation. salt showed up in the boiler feed water. When the dehydrating tank was opened and cleaned, the steam coils were found to be badly pitted — several holes having penetrated through the wall of the pipe. New coils were installed.

METALLURGISTS have been studying the chem-ical behavior of sulfur in steelmaking for many years in order to have a better control of the sulfur content of finished steel. During the refining period in the open hearth, molten steel is separated from a gas phase by molten slag. Chemical reactions occur principally at the slag-metal interface and at the slag-gas interface. A need for physical-chemical investigations of reactions between sulfur-bearing gases and steelmaking slags was recognized some time ago.'.' From the early work, it can be qualitatively concluded that increased sulfur content and low partial pressure of oxygen in the gas phase favor the passage of sulfur from gas to slag. Using radioactive sulfur S Koch and Fink' have demonstrated the rapid rate of exchange of sulfur between gas and slag in an open hearth furnace. Gurry and Darken and Darken and Shields (as reported by Derge and Marshall') have equilibrated lime-iron oxide slags with SO—O2 gas mixtures. The major conclusion from the reported results is that sulfur content increases with increasing lime content in lime-iron oxide slags equilibrated with a gas of high oxygen pressure (10-2). The data were interpreted as indicating the presence of SO, and S,O, ions. Richardson and Fincham' have conducted the most extensive experimental study of sulfur equilibria between gas and slag. Their results confirmed many of the conclusions drawn from calculations of Richardson" and Withers. Richardson and Fincham's data fitted very well into the sulfur scheme represented by the reactions 1/2 s2 (g) + (0) melt - 1/202(g)+ (S) melt [II 1/2 S, (g) + 3/2 O (g) + (0) melt - (SO,) melt. [2] At oxygen pressures greater than 10 to 10 they found that reaction Eq. 2 was predominant while reaction Eq. 1 was controlling at oxygen pressures less than 10." to 10.". The slag compositions and gas mixtures used in their investigations were different from those used in the present study. Wherever possible, comparison has been made between their results and these, and agreement is excellent. It is evident that the distribution of sulfur between slag and gas depends upon the oxygen pressure of the gas. In FeO slags, a change in oxygen pressure produces a change in ferric oxide content, and a knowledge of this equilibrium is a prerequisite to studies of sulfur distribution. The data are found in the work of Darken and Gurry" on the FeO system and the more recent experiments of Gurry and Darken" and of Larson and Chipman" on FeO slags containing lime and silica. The effect of oxygen pressure on the ratio Fe /(Fe" + Fe ), the so-called j-ratio, reported by these investigators will be used in interpreting the results which follow. Experimental Method The purpose of the experimental program was to determine the equilibrium sulfur content in slags exposed to gases of known oxygen and sulfur pres- sures. The slag compositions selected for study were from the lime-silica-iron oxide system. Additions of magnesia were made to some of the slags. Apparatus—The apparatus used by Larson and Chipman was modified slightly to accommodate the addition of SO2 to the gas mixtures. As in their work, slag samples of 0.5 to 2.0 g were held at temperature (lcc) in platinum crucibles under a steady stream of gas, 100 to 200 ml per min, for several hours and then rapidly lowered to the bottom of the furnace where they were quenched in mercury. THE year 1923 was one of great importance in northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas, so far as the' development and expansion of previously discovered oil and gas fields were concerned. However, the search for new fields failed to produce a single discovery that led to important development during the period; in this respect, the year was one of discouragement to the prospector. During the winter and spring months, an especially active "wildcat" campaign was in. progress in southern Arkansas, and a large number of tests were drilled in northern. Louisiana but this activity subsided during the summer and fall. By the close of the year, only routine drilling was in effect in the fields; and only two new areas-Cotton Valley, in Webster Parish, and an area in Union Parish, La.-were showing any important activity because of favorable oil showings. Further drilling is contemplated in both of these areas, and the present feeling is that one or the other may produce the next oilfield in this territory. Briefly, the development of the Smackover field was the overshadowing event of the year. In. southern Arkansas, important development also took place in the East El Dorado, Stephens, and Irma fields; but all of these were relatively small. In northern Louisiana, many new oil wells were drilled in the Bellevue field, and many new gas wells in the Monroe field. In the old Caddo field, a large number of the deep Woodbine wells were plugged back to the "chalk rock," where a high gravity oil is obtained. In the other fields, only a few small wells were drilled. Therefore, Arkansas, furnished the real development of the year in this area. The production for the year showed a material increase over that of 1922, due, chiefly, to Smackover, and practically altogether to the Arkansas fields. In Louisiana, every field, except Caddo, Bellevue, and Elm Grove, showed slight to marked declines; while in Arkansas, El Dorado was the only field that declined throughout the year.

There are two types of shovels currently used primarily as mining tools-the stripping shovel and the quarry-mine (Q-M) shovel. The two types have basically the same features, the main difference being in size. The stripping units are giant four-crawler shovels that operate by placing overburden alongside in a mined-out area. The Q-M units, on the other hand, are two-crawler shovels that usually load into trucks or trains. Powering Systems A typical stripping or Q-M shovel is fully electric, receiving power through a trailing cable that is connected to a large motor-generator set with multiple generators. THIS paper was prepared upon request as a contribution to a symposium covering the manufacture, properties, and uses of the important non-ferrous metals. In approaching a subject as broad as this, there is a natural desire to build up a comprehensive and finished production which shall constitute a dependable source of information on all questions properly belonging to this branch of metal technology. There are, however, a number of circumstances, apart from the mere routine of labor and thought involved, which operate rather effectively against the possibility of completing such an ambitious program at the present time. First of all, as far as any public record of results is concerned, the commercial rolling, drawing, and forming of zinc with relation to changes of structure and properties-and this we consider to constitute the elements of metal technology-might as well be an unpractised art. We have never seen a published photomicrograph showing the structural characteristics of either hard or soft sheet or strip, although the structure of castings has been frequently described, and other coarse-grained structures resulting from hard-hammering and annealing have been reproduced. Thus, an author in this field must proceed to his task without much assistance from the literature, and the outcome can represent only a personal estimate of principles, facts, or findings, and not a summary

Water-propelled banks of carbon dioxide recovered both high- and low-viscosity crude oil substantially in excess of that recovered by water flood in linear flow model experiments. The increase in oil recovery is explained by oil swelling and viscosity reduction. Additional oil was recovered by solution gas drive at the end of the carbon dioxide floods when the model systems were depres-sured. This study was an investigation of the use of a water-driven carbon dioxide bank to recover crude oil. Techniques involving the injection of carbon dioxide have aroused con-siderable interest in recent years among methods considered for increasing oil recoveries. A number of investigators have studied the process in the laboratory1-' and in the field.7,5 Laboratory studies referenced indicate that carbon dioxide in conjunction with water flooding recovers more oil than does water flooding alone. These re- ports diverge widely, however, in stating magnitude of improvement. We believed that a water-driven carbon dioxide bank would increase recovery of crude oils by two mechanisms: viscosity reduction and oil swelling. Due to reduction in the oil viscosity caused by solution of carbon dioxide, displacement efficiency should be improved. In addition, the residual oil should be highly swollen by the carbon dioxide held in solution. Thus, the final residual oil saturation, in terms of stock-tank oil, would be lower than in the absence of carbon dioxide. To test this hypothesis, experi-

The property of Pioneer Gold Mines of B.C. Limited is in the Lillooet mining district of British Columbia. It is on Cadwalleder Creek, 54 miles distant by motor road from Shalalth, a station on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. Interests identified with the present company installed a small amalgamation plant on the property in 1924, consisting of a jaw crusher, Bryan mill and amalgamation plates, in which 75 per cent extraction was made on mill feed averaging 1.0 oz. gold per ton, the tailing being stacked for future treatment. That plant was operated until 1928, when the present company was formed and a 100-ton continuous counter current decantation cyanide plant was built. A second unit, having a nominal capacity of 200 tons daily, was added in 1932 and put into operation during September of that year. When handling ore comparatively free from slow-settling material, the combined capacity of the two units is 400 tons, the original plant now handling about 140 tons maximum. Production to date, from Pioneer, has been about $6,500,000, the present monthly production being better than $250,000 from about 370 tons ore daily, the recovery being 97 per cent. During the fiscal year ending March 31, 1934, a total of 112,936 tons ore and old amalgamation tailing was milled, the mill feed averaging 0.7670 oz. gold and the recovery amounting to 0.7422 oz. gold per ton, or 96.77 per cent. Milling costs, including refining and mint charges, during this period, amounted to $1.45 per ton of ore. Since the building of the first unit of the cyanide plant in 1928, direct cyanidation has been employed, no attempt being made to remove coarse gold from the circuit, other than that cleaned up from the grinding mills during relining and from the classifiers, as occasions permit. In the hope of still further increasing recovery, researches are going forward at this time with the view to removing some of the sulfides after primary grinding, the expectation being that selective treatment of this more refractory portion of the ore may hold economic possibilities.

The creation of unsymmetrical vertical or horizontal fractures in a producing well will result in a unique distortion of the normal shut-in pressures existing at the four surrounding wells. An electrical model study has been made to show how the shut-in pressures at the wells surrounding the fractured producing well may he used to estimate the size and orientation of vertical or horizontal fractures. The pressure differences at the four surrounding wells are recorded during production from the fractured well. The resulting pressure dato are matched from a table of several hundred possible fracture combinations. The table refers to the figure showing the effective size and orientation of the commercially created fracture. INTRODUCTION The creation of commercial fractures about oil and gas wells has led to considerable speculation as to the size and shape of the fractures. It is important that the size and shape be known in certain instances, especially when pressure maintenance programs are to be initiated. It was shown that if knowledge of a vertical fracture could be found that such information may be utilized in planning a waterflooding or gas cycling program and that in some cases the fractures might be utilized very effectively.' Other work showed that it may be desirable to create "pancake" fractures in certain reservoirs but that they should exist in a desirable range.' If the fractures are too large, they should be plugged prior to initiating a pressure maintenance program. If an irregular shaped "pancake" fracture is created, it is desirable to know the orientation of this fracture because similar but unreported studies have shown that "pancake" fractures may or may not substantially affect the sweep efficiencies and performance of the flooding or cycling program. Consequently, it may be desirable in some instances to estimate the effective size and orientation of the fracture. ANALOG An electrical model was used in making this study. The electrical model consisted of a circular reservoir approximately 8 in. in diameter, 1 in. thick and was filled with a dilute salt solution. A copper band formed the periphery of the reservoir. A vertical fracture was simulated by a copper strip soldered to the wire well located in the center of the reservoir. Vertical copper strips of various lengths and orientation were soldered to the wire well to represent vertical fractures in the reservoir. In studies reported here on vertical fractures it was arbitrarily assumed that two fractures originated at the well and extended out into the reservoir. An electrical potential was imposed between the wire well and the periphery of the tank. Plots of the iso-potentials are shown in Figs. 1 through 9. This model provides the steady-state isopotentials existing in a uniform, homogeneous circular reservoir having a vertically fractured well at its center. The permeability of the fracture is much greater than the permeability of the matrix proper. The effects of gravity are neglected.
