The increasing volume of data produced by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa, Limited, during the course of coal exploration prompted the establishment of a computer based processing system for coal data. This system, known as the Coal Mine Evaluation System, consists of geological, mine planning and financial evaluation sub-systems. This paper describes the use of the geological sub-system in assessing the surface mine potential of a portion of the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, in which more than one thousand core boreholes have been drilled to date.

SHORTLY after the middle of the nineteenth century, the invention of the regenerative open-hearth furnace and the development of the Bes-semer process stimulated a, rate of steel production whose magnitude created an unprecedented demand for pig iron. Revolutionary improvements in furnace design, auxiliary equipment, and operating technique enabled the blast furnace to keep abreast of the constantly increasing requirements of the steel mill. The development of improved blowing equipment, more adequate facilities for material handling, and particularly the general use of anthracite and coke to replace the physically weaker charcoal, led to a rapid expansion in both the height and volume of furnaces. Beyond a doubt,, however, the greatest single factor in blast-furnace improvement at this time was the use of the higher blast temperatures made available by the replacement of the recuperative iron pipe stoves by the regenerative Cowper brick stove. The increased blast tempera-ture not only resulted in greater output but also reduced fuel consumption far more than could be explained by the additional heat content of the blast. The progress of iron manufacturing was thus largely mechanical and thermal. Little attention was given tile chemistry of the process until the publication of the investigations of Sir Lowthian Bell.1 Bell's pains-taking experiments and investigations gave to the blast-furnace man his first real scientific conception of blast-furnace chemistry. Bell's recog-nition of the dual function of the carbon, the technical importance of reversible reactions and chemical equilibria, and his conception of the degree of oxidation of the carbon as shown by the analysis of the outgoing gases as a criterion of furnace efficiency, laid the foundation upon which has since been erected the structure of blast-furnace theory.

The mining of the Triassic coals of the Richmond basin has been carried on, upon a larger or smaller scale, for more than a hundred years. Notwithstanding the close proximity of the field to a large city and to tide-water, assuring both a good home-market and cheap transportation, and notwithstanding the good quality of the fuel and the great thickness of the principal bed developed and worked, operations in this field have been conducted with but limited success. The basin comprises about 189 square miles, being from 24 to 31½ miles in length by 5½ to 10 miles in width. Not much more than one-tenth of this area has been explored in a practical and efficient way, and not over 1200 acres have been worked near and along the outcrops or edges of the coal. The practical mistakes which have been committed undoubtedly in a number of the mine-operations of the past, do not alone explain the unsatisfactory success and progress of the industry of this field ; nor can it be ascribed to the lack of local enterprise. Other reasons have to be looked for; and, as a principal one, the irregularity and the faulted conditions of the coal deposits must be pointed out. As a second cause, the indifference of the State government, which leaves the development of the field entirely to private enterprise, instead of aiding it by systematical and practical geological investigations, deserves to be mentioned. One of the most unexpected and unusual mining disasters which have ever been recorded in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, or, in fact, in any coal-mining district, occurred in the northern anthracite field near Nanticoke, Luzerne County, about 10 o'clock on Friday morning, December 18, 1885. This accident caused the death of twenty-six persons, a larger number than had perished in any catastrophe in the anthracite mines since that which occurred at the West Pittston mine in 1871. The Nanticoke disaster resulted from a " cave-in " in the roof of a portion of the Ross coal-bed workings from Slope No. 1 of the Susquehanna Coal Company, by which a large body of quicksand, gravel, rock- and coal-boulders, and water broke through the roof of the mine, filling up a large extent of the workings, until not only the water, but also the rock material, flowed out at the mouth of the mine. Immediately over the point where the "cave-in" occurred, was located a large pile of refuse coal and slate, taken from Slope No. a. After the occurrence of the accident, I made a very careful examination of the ground in the vicinity of the "cave-in," in conjunction with a study of all the maps, sections and other mining data in the possession of the Susquehanna Coal Company, which were placed at my disposal by Manager Irving A. Stearns. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, was compiled from the Company's map, and from special maps made by the Geological Survey under the direction of my assistant, Mr. Frank A. Hill. This map shows the relative position of the mine-workings, the surface features and the "cave-in," and other points to be specially referred to hereafter. IN a general way, the situation in copper smelting is quite similar to that of lead smelting. In other words, the introduction and successful flotation of copper ores has tended to decrease greatly the tonnage to be handled by the smelter and therefore has resulted in curtailed smelter operation. However, copper production has increased rather than decreased. The general effect of flotation has been to decrease the number of furnaces operating, but it has also increased to a considerable extent the difficulties in handling the material, just as was outlined in the case of lead smelting. In copper smelting, the flotation concentrates must be roasted and prepared for the reverberatory furnace. HANDLING FLOTATION CONCENTRATES The handling of copper flotation concentrate, which is more or less wet and mucky, is more difficult than was the handling of the old gravity concentrate. Also, the roasting of the concentrate and the handling of the calcine produced is more difficult. That is mainly because the material is extremely fine and the tendency to higher dust losses is greatly increased. The draft in the roasting furnaces must be kept as low as, possible, and the feeding of the calcine into the reverberatory furnace must be done carefully, so that dust losses may be kept at a minimum. TRANSITION STAGES OF CONCENTRATION AND SMELTING The general process through which the copper smelter has gone as a result of flotation has been somewhat as follows: In the relatively old days, when copper ores of low grade were first treated, a large number of furnaces were required, and naturally comparatively poor recoveries were made. Also, the profits on low-grade ores were small and the handling of those ores was possible only because of the large tonnages. Then came gravity concentration, which was a great improvement but which only incompletely removed the gangue material, the insoluble and the iron, from the copper ore, and made comparatively poor copper recoveries. This still left a considerable amount of insoluble and iron, as well as the copper itself, to be treated at the smelter.

THE year 1924 showed even less drilling in Kentucky and Tennessee than the preceding year. The operators in this section, however, are anxious to resume development work and are only waiting for a higher market for crude oil before starting such a program. In Kentucky, during 1924, 1605 wells were completed, the combined initial daily production of these wells being 25,599 bbl. Of the total number of wells drilled 1176 were oil wells, 61 gas wells, and 368 were dry holes. The average initial production of the oil wells was 21.8 bbl. per well. In Tennessee, 28 wells having an initial daily production of 1199 bbl. were completed during 1924. Of these, 3 were oil wells, 6 were gas wells, and 19 were dry holes. The initial production of the three oil wells was 400 bbl. Of the total number of wells drilled in Kentucky in 1924, 73 per cent. came in as producing wells; and of those drilled in Tennessee, 10 ½ per cent. came in as producing wells and 20 per cent. as gas wells. In Tennessee, during 1924, wildcatting dropped off considerably and only about one-half as many wells were drilled as in the preceding year; in Kentucky, on the other hand, there was only a slight curtailment in drilling, there being 1943 wells drilled in 1923 as against 1605 in 1924.

The idea of a portable crusher is not new. Many such crushers are available but they are small and designed for construction work. For many years the author has suggested, both in this country and in Europe, the building of larger portable crushers intended expressly for use in quarries or open pits. Although not applicable under all conditions, there are mining operations where a mobile crusher arrangement could be more profitable than the facilities now used. The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less expensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton-miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3, left). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks. Although power consumption for hauling on a grade increases for both conveyances, the rate of power consumption increases faster for trucks than for conveyor belts (Fig. 3, right). Since the output rate and related fixed costs are affected by the travel speed, total haulage costs with trucks would increase with the grade more rapidly than the similar costs of conveyor belts (Fig. 4). Travel distance, road grade, speed, size and number of pieces of equipment, efficiency of operation, and many other factors affect such haulage costs. In general terms it can be said that the shorter the distance, the steeper the grade, and the greater the output, the more advantageous the belt becomes in comparison to truck or track haulage. In addition to potential cost savings in haulage procedures, a portable crusher would allow better utilization and performance of shovels. Loading operations would not be interrupted as often by the necessity of waiting for cars or trucks. Unfortunately, the application of belts in open pits for haulage from bench sites is generally not practical under existing conditions because a belt fed directly by a mechanical shovel can be torn, damaged, or worn out quickly by the large rock fragments falling on it during loading. However, by using a mobile crusher this situation can be avoided. As shown in Fig. 1 (b), the shovel feeds rock into the crusher located behind it. The crushed material is initially transported by an extensible and/or movable belt, thence by a longer stationary conveyor to the plant where the material is subjected to further treatment by secondary crushing, screening, etc. The first-mentioned conveyor, needed to bridge the distance between the shovel and the stationary conveyor, is necessarily variable in length owing to the continuous movement of the shovel and the desire to keep the stationary belt at a safe distance from the bench during blasting operations. The remarkable part of mobile crusher operations is the extra-ordinarily high output per man-shift, the low maintenance and power requirements for haulage, and the increased output of the loading shovel. A cement quarry which has been using a portable crusher and conveyor since 1956 requires only three men to operate the shovel and crusher and to transport the crushed rock by belt from the quarry face to the screening plant. It was deemed desirable to obtain an understanding of the vacuum desulfurization process. McKechnie1 has reported that the sulfur content of nickel- and cobalt-base alloys is reduced in vacuo. Keverian and Taylor2 have observed that vacuum melting causes desulfurization of iron-carbon-silicon alloys. Garnyk and samarin3 have desulfurized transformer steel by vacuum treatment. Experiments were conducted in order to investigate the desulfurization of liquid iron under reduced pressures, and to establish the effect of some alloying elements, and various crucible materials. A vacuum-induction furnace of 50-lb capacity was used. The charge was Armco iron. Silicon was added as 90 pct ferrosilicon, carbon as electrode graphite, and aluminum as high-purity aluminum metal. Magnesia and silica crucibles were used, their inside diameters were 5 1/2 and 5 3/8 in., respectively. The temperature was measured with an optical pyrometer and it was held at 1600 1 15°C. Samples were withdrawn with quartz tubes of 6 mm ID, without disturbing the furnace atmosphere. Pressures were measured with an alphatron gage. The experimental results are shown in Fig. 1. They indicate that: 1) Sulfur can be removed from liquid iron alloys by vacuum treatment; 2) The desulfurization is enhanced by the presence of silicon, carbon, and aluminum, all these elements increase the activity of sulfur dissolved in liquid iron;4 3) The pronounced effect of silicon indicates that probably a volatile silicon sulfide is formed, Alcock and Richardson5 have observed a similar phenomenon; 4) The same rate of desulfurization was obtained when the metal was contained in either magnesia or silica crucibles. "In the spring of 1927, six members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers met for dinner at the Chemists' Club in New York to discuss the possibility of setting up a committee within the Institute to further the current interest in the science of steelmaking. Attention to this subject had been crystallized by a symposium held by the Faraday Society in 1925. After a prolonged discussion, ranging from thermodynamics to slag conditioning, it was decided to approach the Institute with the request that a standing committee on "The Physical Chemistry of Steel Making" be set up. This committee proposed to promote scientific and practical papers on the subject, and was designed to cooperate with the Open Hearth Committee of the Institute in bringing scientific developments to the attention of open-hearth operators throughout the country. . . . "As the life of the [Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking] Committee lengthened and general interest in the technical phases of steelmaking grew, it .became evident that there was a distinct need for a book that might serve the open-hearth interests to better advantage than standard texts whose scope is necessarily wide and whose detailed exposition of the open-hearth process is, therefore, somewhat limited. With this thought in mind, the Committee, after some years of consideration and debate, embarked on the venture of writing a manuscript on 'Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking'." The foregoing paragraphs, taken from the introduction by C. H. Herty, Jr. to the first edition, well describe the circum- stances which led to the publication of “Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking” in the spring of 1944. The book consisted of nine- teen chapters contributed by twenty-three authors and edited by the staff of Alloys of Iron Research and T. S. Washburn, H; M. Larsen, and J. S. Marsh with Frank T. Sisco as consulting editor. The Engineering Foundation and the Open Hearth Steel Committee of the Iron and Steel Division, AIME, made financial grants; steel companies and other organizations supported the publication by contributing time and expenses of staff members in their capacity as authors or editors. Prealloyed powders of nickel-base superalloys were sintered to almost theoretical density in short sinterilzg times. It was ascertained that the rapid densification was caused by a small amount of liquid phase at the grain boundaries, which apparently ovriginated by incipient melting at temperatures considerably below those at which macroscopic melting of the compacts occurred. An increase in the quantity of liquid phase present during sintering-, caused by an increase in the sintering temperature, increased the densification rate, but resulted in a decrease in the room temperature tensile propevties. NICKEL-base superalloys, which presently comprise an important group of high temperature alloys, are difficult to fabricate by the forging, casting, and machining operations presently used. As it was felt that fabrication by powder metallurgical techniques might offer advantages in the production of super-alloy parts, a basic investigation of the most important process in the sequence of powder metallurgical operations, the sintering process, was undertaken on Rene 41, Udirnet 500, and Nimonic 90 and 100 powders. These alloys age harden by the precipitation of the ? Ni, rA1,Ti) phase. Nickel-base superalloys of the Nimonic type have been fabricated by powder metallurgical methods, and their mechanical properties reported in detail.' Construction of new large refineries was small in 1937, but extensive modernization and expansion of existing plants were made, bearing out the observation of the Bureau of Mines that the trend is strongly toward fewer and larger refineries. Building the first large combination skimming and cracking unit of 20,000-bbl. capacity was a startling achievement four or five years ago, but it has been exceeded many times since, and at least four units with a capacity of 30,000 bbl. or more were contracted for during 1937, as well as many other units of smaller but still substantial capacity. Installation of polymerization plants for producing high-antiknock blending naphthas from refinery gases progressed at an accelerated rate in refineries affording sufficient raw gas to make the use of the process profitable. The total productive capacity of polymerization units built and contracted for in the United States is now about 25,000 bbl., equivalent to the gasoline production from approximately 55,000 bbl. of crude oil a day. Octane Fuels Also utilizing refinery gases—the butylene fractions in particular—the plants for manufacture of iso-octane increased in number to such an extent that the combined capacities will enable the air forces of the United States shortly to go entirely to the use of 100-octane fuel, indications being that the Army will reach that position in 1938, with the Navy not far behind. Commercial air-lines are expected to take advantage of the greater power of high-antiknock fuels to gain the increased power and increased pay loads possible with their use. Work done on producing fuels with octanes beyond the 100 point has recently been reported, and their production can be expected, although at high cost, when the economics of the situation justifies and engines capable of utilizing them efficiently are available.
