On water-quenching from within the (a + ß) phase region Zr-2.5 Nb and Zr-2.5 Nb-0.5 Cu alloys can undergo w transfirmation. This transformation has been attributed to the enrichment of ß Zr phase, at the solution-treatment temperature, by the solute atoms. The ß—w transformation is accompanied by a hardening 01 the alloys and in the optimum condition w-bearing specimens of the ternary alloy are about 14 pct harder than those bearing only a' phase. On aging crl reverls thermally to more stable phases, which results in a considerable softening of the specirnens, as follows: w quenched -waged + ß Zr (enriched) waged - a + ß Nb The high-temperature bcc ß Zr in certain zirconium alloys can transform to a metastable w phase which has a primitive hexagonal structure. In the Zr-Nb alloy system w phase has been observed in the composition range of 7 to 15 wt pct Nb by a number of investigators.'-' In this composition range w can form by water-quenching ß Zr or by aging. known as athermal and thermal w, respectively. Hatt and Roberts' have found that thermal w has a constant c/a ratio of 0.622 +0.002 regardless of the composition and tha: the lattice parameters are of the order of a = 5.02A and c = 3.0 ?. The actual lattice parameters depend upon composition and the temperature of aging. The lattice constants of athermal w. however, depend upon alloy composition.3 The presence of w phase in zirconium alloys can cause substantial strengthening which has been attributed as probably due to the coherency between w and parent ß Zr phase. Robinson et al.' found that the presence of w can raise the strength of Zr-5.0 Nb-2.0 Sn and Zr-5.0 Mo-2.0 Sn alloys to about 170.000 psi: however. the ductility is considerably reduced. With the growing use of Zr-2.5 Nb and Zr-2.5 Nb-0.5 Cu alloys in the nuclear reactors, and the significant effect of w transformation on the mechanical properties of zirconium alloys studies were undertaken to study the w transformation in Zr-2.5 Nb and Zr-2.5 Nb-0.5 Cu alloys. This paper is concerned with the formation and reversion of w phase in these alloys. 1) MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The following two alloys were studied: 1) Zr-2.5 Nb-0.5 Cu (referred to as the ternary alloy): 2) Zr-2.5 Nb (referred to as the binary alloy). The chemical analysis of the alloys is given in Table I. The alloys, in the form of 3/8-in.-diam rods and 1/8-in.-thick sheets, were supplied by the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories of the A.E.C.L. Initial fabrication for preparation of various specimens was carried out by cold rolling and swaging with intermediate anneals at 1000°C. All the heat treatments were carried out after the specimens were wrapped in zirconium foils and encapsulated in silica tubes under a vacuum of 5 x 10-% m of Hg. For optical metallography and hardness measurements disc specimens + in. diam by + in. thick were used. After the required heat treatments the specimens were mechanically and then chemically polished in a 45 pct HNO3, 45 pct H20. and 10 pct HF solution. The hardness measurements on the chemically polished specimens were carried out on a Vickers hardness tester using a 10-kg load. For each specimen at least fifteen indentations were made in order to obtain a representative hardness value. The phase identification and structural analysis were carried out using X-rays and electron diffraction techniques. Wires of 1.5 mm diam reduced to 0.12 mm diam by chemical etching were used for making Debye-Scherrer powder patterns using copper K-a radiations in 114.6-mm-diam camera. Thin films for transmission electron microscopy were prepared by electropolishing heat-treated a by 7 by 0.005-in.-thick strips using a modified Bollmann-Window technique. The 10 pct perchloric acid-90 pct methyl alcohol electropolishing bath was kepl at -5OCC and polishing was done at 5 to 10 v. Quarrying and crushing 500 tons of limestone plus burning some 240 tons of limestone per day are the two initial phases in the production of borax, soda ash, sodium sulfate and related chemicals at Stauffer Chemical Co.'s plant in Westend, Calif. These processing steps have been upgraded in recent years by the installation of new primary and secondary crushers, an 8 x 340-ft rotary kiln plus kiln feed, control and cooling components-all designed and manufactured by Traylor Engineering and Manufacturing Division of Fuller Co. As a result of this new equipment, a new product- quicklime-has been added to the West End product family and considerable reductions have been realized in fuel and manpower costs.

The smaller net gain is accounted for in three ways: (1) A greater lag in enrollment of those elected in the last quarter of the year; (2) an increase in the number of applications involving change of status from Junior Member to Member; and (3) an increase of 167 in the loss by death by resignation and by suspension in 1939 as compared with 1938. Experience shows that at the end of a year of less prosperous conditions in the mineral industries, and, therefore, among engineers engaged in these industries, resignations and suspensions are more numerous. Business and industrial indexes all show 1938 to have been somewhat less prosperous than 1937; but the improvement in 1939 should be reflected in the record for 1940.

The processing of fine particles inevitably produces slimes. These present a dewatering problem, for which gravity thickening provides a partial or preliminary solution. The paper shows the effects of practical factors in carrying out laboratory sizing tests for thickeners. Several methods of determining thickener unit area have been compared for a lightly coagulated phosphate slurry and a highly flocculated kaolin slurry. Practical techniques of mixing and flocculant addition have significant effects on batch settling data. Pulp temperature and cylinder dimensions are very important. Errors in sizing thickeners for highly flocculated slurries by the standard methods are discussed. Such methods are suitable for less compressible slurries, however. Rules of thumb for flocculant selection are given.

Nonferrous alloys upon which desirable properties can be conferred by heat treatment are becoming of increasing industrial importance. The alloys of copper with a constituent which has a solubility varying with temperature are materials of this character. Some of the constituents which are effective in producing a change in the mechanical properties of these alloys upon heat treatment are, according to Corson,' nickel and silicon, iron and silicon, cobalt and silicon, and chromium and silicon. In addition to these elements, Gregg2 states that the combination of beryllium and silicon is effective in producing age-hardening characteristics in copper. The effect of these elements, however, as dispersion-hardening constituents in the copper alpha solid solutions does not seem to have been studied in any considerable detail. This paper deals with the heat treatment and properties of three alpha brasses containing 3 per cent. of nickel plus silicon in the proportion necessary to form the compound nickel silicide, Ni2Si. Some information of a preliminary nature in regard to the hardening by heat treatment of phosphor bronze containing the same percentages of nickel and silicon is included. The method of hardening the alloys, which is effective in increasing the tensile strength and proportional limit, is similar to that used in the case of duralumin type aluminum alloys. It consists of a quench from a temperature at which the hardening constituent is in solid solution, followed by an aging at a lower temperature to precipitate the dissolved constituent in a dispersed condition. This results in an increased resistance of the alloy to deformation with an attendant improvement in the tensile properties.

WHEN beryllium is bombarded by gamma rays under suitable conditions it evolves neutrons. This nuclear reaction, Bes + y + n + Be", [I] is utilized in the process that is described in this paper. The equation, which physicists often abbreviate to Bevy, n)Be" shows that a photon, y, is absorbed by the Be- sotope of beryllium which then emits a neutron, n, leaving Be8 as a residue." It has been determined that the threshold for this reaction is 1.63 mev; that is, gamma rays having an energy less than 1.63 million electron volts do not have enough energy to remove a neutron from the beryllium nucleus. The threshold value for the beryllium (y, n) reaction is lower than that for any other element. The next most sensitive element is heavy hydrogen (deuterium) whose gamma neutron reaction, D2 (-y, n) H1, has a threshold of 2.2 mev. Thus, gamma rays having an intensity between 1.63 and 2.2 mev will evolve neutrons from beryllium and from beryllium only. Nuclear reactions can be considered as occurring between a projectile and a target. The probability of the occurrence of any such encounter can be expressed in terms of the "cross section" of the target nucleus for the projectile and projectile energy. This cross section, then, is the area normal to the path of the projectile controlled by the target for the purpose of the reaction under consideration. Cross sections are usually expressed in barns, in which a barn is lo-" sq cm. The cross section for Eq 1 is very small, even for nuclear reactions, and of the order of 10"3 barns. It is therefore necessary that a high flux of gamma radiation at the appropriate energy be used to obtain an appreciable neutron yield. In view of the nuclear properties of beryllium it seemed that if pieces of beryllium ore on a moving belt were bombarded with an intense beam of gamma rays, those pieces which are rich in beryllium minerals would emit neutrons at a sufficiently high rate to make it possible to detect that emission, and to use it to actuate a mechanical device for removal of the active from the barren particles. The principal economic source of beryllium is the mineral, beryl. Beryl occurs mainly in pegmatites which are characteristically coarse grained. Steam permeability measurements have been made in the laboratory on several samples of natural reservoir materials. The steam temperatures and pressures were selected to simulate conditions which might exist in a reservoir during the injection of steam. For each sample tested, the experimental permeability to superheated steam was comparable to that measured with air and no evidence of plugging was detected. Some samples were exposed to water at various temperatures and plugging was found to occur in materials which contained significant quantities of monmorillonite clay. Temperature had little effect on the degree of plug-ning between 75 and 325 F. The measured pemeabilities tended to increase slightly with temperature, but the changes were small compared with the initial loss of per~neability on wetting. Sequential pemzeability measurements were made on two samples using air, water, steam, water and air, in that order. Both samples were water-sensitive and plugged extensively after the initial injection of water. Upon exposure to superheated steatm the samples dehydrated and their permenbilities to superheated steam were comparable to those initially measured with air. The remaining measuretnetzts with water and air confirmed that the water plugging was reversible and that the samples were not seriorrsly damaged during the tests. INTRODUCTION The swelling of water-sensitive clays during water floods has long been recognized as a potential source of reservoir damage. The recent extensive application of steam injection and stimulation has compounded this problem since both hot water and steam (as well as fresh water at reservoir temperatures) are, at sume time, in contact with the producing zone adjacent to the bore of a steam injection well. The purpose of this paper is to present data which compare the sensitivity of some natural sedimentary rock samples to water at various temperatures, and to super-heated steam. Some properties of montmorillonite clay are briefly reviewed, and comparisons are drawn between empirical data and the predicted behavior of the montmorillonite known to be present in the samples. PROPERTIES OF MONTMORILLONIT E CLAY Water initially adsorbs on dry N a -montmorillonite clay in discrete layers in the interlaminar space between clal platelets. The platelet spacing, which is 9.6 A (angstroms) for a dehydrated clay, has been observed to expand in discrete steps to 12.4, 15.5, 18.4 and 21.4 A spacings, indicating the formation of four discrete layers of regularly oriented water molecules.' The first two layers are easily formed by hydrating a dry sample to equilibrium in an atmosphere with carefully controlled humidity. The formation of the higher layers is more difficult. The usual X-ray diffraction patterns of the more highly hydrated samples indicate a gradual increase in the average spacing betwcen 15.5 and 19.2 A, followed by a discontinuous expansion to 31 A when the weight ratio of water to dry clay is between 0.5 and 1.2.' Platelet expansion above 31 A proceeds monotonically as the moisture is increased and no regular arrangement of the platelets ib observed. Water-sensitivity in sedimentary rocks is usually associated with Na-montmorillonite clay when it is in the noncrystal-line state. Mering3 found that the average lattice spacing of sodium montmorillonite hydrated at 68 F and 70 per cent relative humidity was 15.5 A, and that the spacing, at 92 per cent humidity was 16.5 A. The water adsorbed at the higher humidity has the same free energy as liquid water at 65.6 F. Kolaian and Low' used a tensiometer to measure the thermodynamic properties of water in diffuse suspensions of montmorillonite clays relative to pure water. They observed that water in suspensions as dilute as 6 per cent clay became partially oriented when left undisturbed. The bonding associated with this orientation was not extensive because the free energy difference between the water in suspension and pure water was only a few millicalories per mole. They also found that the measured free energy difference decreased rapidly with temperature and became negligible above 100 F. This evidence indicates that montmorillonites contained in sedimentary rocks would dehydrate to a crystalline structure when exposed to superheated steam, and that the rock permeability measured with steam would be equivalent to that measured with air. The effect of elevated temperatures on the swelline of montmorillonite clays in aqueous suspensions has not been investigated. The purpose of this paper is to present data that have been obtained during the past two years concerning the effects of prior cold-work and temperature and time of anneal upon the recrystallization and grain growth of 70-30 cartridge brass. It was desirable to study certain of these phases so that an accurate picture of the principles of the subject could be shown. The work is not intended to provide explicit annealing data, but to provide material examples that may help to clarify analogous problems concerning this alloy. Specifications often set limitations upon the grain size of annealed materials because of the importance of grain size upon subsequent manufacturing operations. It was, therefore, worth while to study the variables that affect the recrystallized grain size of this material. C. H. Mathewson and A. Phillips,l W. R, Webster,2 and others have presented annealing characteristic curves of this alloy. A recent typical curve presented by R. S. Pratt3 is shown in Fig. I. The tensile properties and grain sizes are shown as functions of the annealing temperature. Such curves serve as a useful guide in determining the physical properties of annealed material, but as they are made generally under carefully controlled laboratory conditions they do not indicate the performance of metal annealed in a mill muffle, where such conditions as amounts of metal, heating time and temperature may differ. Study of the effect of time and temperature upon grain growth and subscquent recrystallization was made with a coil of metal having the following analysis: 70.04 per cent copper; 0.007 lead; 0.007 iron; 0.00 tin; 0.00 silicon; 0.001 nickel; 0.000 phosphorus; balance zinc. The sample coil was obtained from metal that had been rerolled from hot-rolled mill stock, and was received at 0.228-in. gauge, soft, with a grain size of 0.125 mm. This material was then rolled 43.5 per cent to 0.129-in. gauge and annealed to a 0.053-mm. grain size. In this condition, samples were cut and used in all of the experimental work reported in this paper. Time The first study was of crystal growth at a constant temperature over a moderate length of time. Material was cut from the stock coil at 0.129-in. size and rolled 75 per , cent hard to 0.032-in. gauge. From this piece small samples were cut M by 2 in., suitable for grain-size determina.tions. Twelve samples were placed in an electric furnace uniformly across the width, approximately an inch from the floor. A thermocouple was wired to the center sample, so that the approximate metal temperature could be followed. At various

AN extensive survey of the factors which affect austenite grain growth has already been made.' These factors are temperature, time at temperature, rate of heating, initial grain size, hot-working, alloy content, ofheating,initialand rate of cooling from the liquidus-solidus temperature. In the present work, a vacuum-melted temperature.electrolytic iron was used and the variables studies were temperature, time at temperature, and prior ferrite grain size. Other factors were maintained constant. The iron used in this study was vacuum-melted electrolytic iron of nominal composition of impurities of 0.07 wt pct. It was supplied as a ½ in. round cold-drawn bar. This iron was tested in three conditions: as-received, annealed 6 hr at 1200°F, and annealed 6 hr at 1600°F. Samples were ? in. disks cut from the bar. The prior anneals were carried out in vacuum and the isothermal treatments were carried out in vacuum-sealed Vycor tubing. The thermal etch technique was employed to determine the austenite grain size. Prior to sealing the test specimens, one surface of the sample was polished metallographically. This surface, after heating, was examined to determine the austenite grain size, since the austenite boundaries are revealed by thermal etching. This is essentially the only technique available for measuring the austenite grain size of low carbon steels or pure irons without altering the composition. It has been shown to yield results that are in agreement with other methods used for determining austenite grain sizes.' The specimen size was quite large compared to the grain size measured, so inhibition of growth due to size effects is probably negligible. After vacuum sealing, each sample was placed into a furnace at temperature and at the completion of the run was quenched into a mercury bath. The growth temperatures used were 1700°, 1800°, 1900°, and 2000°F controlled to -~10"F. Growth times were varied from 10 to 240 hr. The long times were used in order to eliminate the nucleation and growth effects occurring during the initial transformation. Time was measured from the introduction of the capsule into the hot furnace to the time of quench. Grain-size measurements were made with the use of a grain-size eyepiece of a microscope. By determining the number of grains per square millimeter at X100 and taking the square root of the reciprocal of this number, the average linear dimension of the grains was determined. Figs. 1 and 2 are plots of these data as a function of time and temperature for the various conditions investigated. The variation of D, the linear dimension of the grains, was assumed to follow the equation3 D = A tn. The curves of Fig. 1 were obtained from the data by the use of the least-squares method of analysis. Fig. 1 is for the growth of the as-received stock and Fig. 2 is for growth after prior treatments. Differentiating the foregoing equation gives an expression for the rate of growth dD/dt = G = nAtn-1 = nD/t. Both D and G as functions of t are given in Table I. It should be noted that G is a function of time; the growth rate is rapid at early stages and decreases with increasing time. Since increasing temperature increases the growth rate, it has been common practice to use the empirical relationship G = Go e-Q/RT to relate temperature to growth rate. The growth rate customarily has been taken at constant values of D on the basis that the rate of growth is related to the boundary surface tension and this is measured by the curvature of the boundary. At constant D values, the growth rate is a function of time and temperature. The growth rate can be related however to temperature at constant time, and this has the advantage that under these conditions the growth rate is a function only of temperature. Obviously the Q values, activation energies, obtained for each assumption will not be the same and the question of which is the more correct is a moot one, since the assumed exponential relationship in either case has no particular theoretical significance. By plotting G, at constant grain size, vs 1/T, the activation energy over the temperature range of 1800" to 2000°F is found to vary from 30,000 cal per mol at the smaller grain sizes to 50,000 cal per mol at the larger grain sizes. The 1700°F data do not correlate with the data at higher temperatures. The activation energies for the 1200" and 1600°F prior annealed materials were calculated as 50,000 and 62,000 cal per mol, respectively, using the reciprocal time to a given grain size as a measure of the growth rate. IT is generally believed that the amount of diamond drilling will increase appreciably in the next decade, as the seaarch for minerals throughout the world becomes more difficult and intense. An attendant problem may be one of short diamond supply, resulting in higher bit and drilling cost. With this background, the U. S. Bureau of Mines' and the School of Mines at the University of Minnesota' have established comprehensive research programs in diamond drilling. One of the several aims is the design of a more efficient bit, which would lower diamond consumption and increase rate of advance, both essential in reducing drilling costs. The objective of the specific research problem" discussed in this paper was an investigation of the cutting action of the cliamonds set in a diamond drill bit, cutting action meaning the manner in which the diamonds cut or. loosen the minerals in the rocks being drilled. In the literature on cutting action such descriptive terms are used .as: grinding, wearing, cutting, breaking, shearing, scraping, melting, and chipping. These actions were seldom described or defined. Grodzinski describes the cutting action of a single diamond in the shaping of certain types of material as "breaking out chips of the material." Brittle mate-. rials break as small separate chips, and tough materials, because of heat generated, give a continuous chip. Deeby said about diamond drills: "When diamonds are forced into the formation and rotated, they either break the bond holding the rock particles together, or they cause conchoidal fracture of the rock itself. The former action occurs when drilling in sandstones, siltstones, shales, etc. and the latter action when drilling in chert, flint, or quartz." He said that diamonds cut on the "grinding principle" but he does not define or elaborate on this action. The cutting action of diamonds on glass was first investigated about 1816 by Dr. W. H. Wol-laston, an English physicist. The best glass-cutting diamonds have a natural or artificially rounded cutting edge. This edge first indents the glass and then slightly separates the particles, forming a shallow and nearly invisible fissure. Since none of the material is removed, this action is one of splitting rather than cutting. No other reports of research work on the cutting action of the diamond were found, and further work was considered justified and advisable. It is impractical, even if possible, to observe directly the cutting action of a diamond drill bit in rock; therefore it was necessary to devise an indirect method. It was believed that a study of the following three observations would lead to a better understanding of the cutting action: 1—the appearance of the minerals or rock surface in the bottom of the hole, 2—the size, shape, and other characteristics of the drill cuttings, and 3—the condition of the diamonds in the bit. The cutting action in a particular rock probably varies with bit pressure and speed. If the bit were slowly lifted off the rock, the effect of decreasing pressure might obliterate those bottom hole characteristics that are specific at the test pressure. Likewise, if the drill were stopped with the bit still in contact with the bottom of the hole, then decreasing speed effects would tend to obliterate the characteristics at the set test conditions. Therefore, in order to preserve those cutting effects impressed on the rock at test conditions, it seemed necessary to lift the bit off the bottom of the hole almost instantaneously once drilling conditions, i.e., revolutions per minute, pressure, and water flow became constant. In addition to observing the cuttings, the bit, and the bottom of hole, it seemed desirable to collect some quantitative data for purposes of correlation with the observations and for a record of bit performance. Consequently such data as revolutions per minute, force applied, and rate of advance of the bit were recorded. Six rock types, listed in Table I, were chosen for the tests. It was felt that these rocks had most of the variable characteristics of texture, bonding, and mineral hardness met in the common rocks generally being drilled. The sandstone was so poorly cemented as to be friable, even though most of the cement was silica. The limestone, though well cemented, was quite porous. Originally it was planned to conduct the tesk work with a full-scale drill unit, using EX bits, 7/8-in. core, 11/4-in. OD. The drill worked well, but was too cumbersome for rapid, accurate drilling of many short holes (1 ½-in.) in varied rock types. A new

X-ray fluorescence analysis can be profitably applied in the mineral industry by improving evaluation and control analyses, while offering lower cost and greater speed than conventional methods. Chemical analyses are not only a major item of cost in exploration and mining, as well as in milling and chemical treatment, but often cause evaluation and control of processing steps to lag behind operations. In the fields of geology and mining, the X-ray technique can be employed without destroying samples and, if necessary, specimens can be analyzed and then used, unchanged, in other evaluation techniques. Results are quickly made available for decisions on progress of exploration or sorting of waste and ore.

Regarding liquid nzetals structurally as a suspm-sion of clusters , having derivated solid-state coordination, in truly liquid atoms, the recently developed Kuvlar-Samarin technique of centrifuging- in liquid state enabled the determination of the cluster sizes inAl-Cu mid Pb-Sn systems. It is shown that the colutne fraction of the clusters does not exceed 9 pct and the energy of their formation in Al-Cu is about 5.5 kcal per g-atom and in Pb-Sn eutectic alloys about 25 kcal per y-atoni. STRUCTURAL investigations of liquid state have principally followed the following three courses: i) studies with X-ray, electron, or neutron diffraction; these investigations have shown that there is a certain amount of regularity in the structure of liquid metals which can be defined by a coordination number and that the structure is a derived function of that in the solid state; ii) thermodynamical investigations which are based on the concept of ideal behavior; these describe the liquid state in terms of free-energy values and other thermodynamic functions; although these investigations are of help in the study of the general effects of alloying, they do not provide any structural insight into the precise atomic distribution in liquid state; iii) measurements of surface tension and viscosity; although it is natural to expect that the viscosity is related to the structure in liquid state, these investigations have so far only provided information which can be used by the foundry technologists and has been little utilized in formulating models of the structure of liquid state. As it happens, investigators in the three groups have worked almost independently of each other and there is practically no structural correlation between the results of one group with those of another. The purpose of the present paper is to indicate that the experimentally measured parameters of these three groups of research are closely related to the structure in the liquid state. STRUCTURE OF LIQUID METALS Although atomic distribution in solid and gaseous states is rigorously known, that of the liquid state is only appreciated on the fringes. There is no universal model of atomic distribution in liquid state, but two diverse models are at present hotly contested. The first, largely expounded by ~ildebrand,' regards the liquids as condensed gas since many of their properties and much of their behavior can be adequately described by regarding them as fluids. The second mode12j3 considers that some form of near-solid as- sociation of large number of atoms exists in the liquid state. On the other hand, ~ernal' was able to predict rather precisely the radial distribution functions in liquids on the basis of statistical geometric approach which considered that liquids are "homogeneous, coherent, and essentially irregular assemblage of molecules containing no crystalline regions or holes large enough to admit another molecule". He introduced the concept of pseudonuclei in the otherwise random structure as aggregates of closely packed tetrahedra which gradually merge into irregularity and continually replace each other. To what extent the pseudonuclei can be regarded as regions of near-solid association is indefinite but Bernal suggested that the concept of pseudonuclei can be compromised with the latter model if the near-solid associations are regarded as extremely dense and not necessarily crystalline. The difficulty in projecting the structure of liquid metals arises because they exhibit duplicity of character as some of their properties are closer to those of crystalline solids and others to fluids. There is an increasing tendency to discuss the structure of liquid metals in terms of the second concept according to which the structure of liquid metals may be conceived as consisting of i) clusters of atoms where the aggregation is a close derivative of that in the crystalline state, ii) individual atoms which behave like true liquids in respect to degrees of freedom and iii) excess number of vacancies. It is noteworthy that the introduction of only 5 pct vacancies is sufficient to transform crystalline matter into the liquid state. At any instant of time thermodynamic equilibrium exists between i, ii, and iii, but the relative proportion of the clusters and random atoms is not known. That this is so can be appreciated by the fact that, when liquid metal is rapidly cooled, liquid state vacancies may condense in the form of dislocation loops and vacancies in excess of their equilibrium number in solid state. These dislocation loops have been observed in thin foils of aluminum prepared from rapid cooled aluminum. As temperature increases above melting point the number and volume fraction of clusters decrease but those of vacancies and random atoms increase. Clusters are transient in nature. In pure metals the cluster is an aggregation of the metal itself. In alloys, however, the nature of the cluster largely depends on the interaction between solvent and solute atoms. If the interaction between unlike atoms is greater than between like atoms: the clusters are then aggregates of unlike atoms. Examples of this kind of system are A1-Cu, Mg-Pb, and so forth, i.e., systems which exhibit negative departures from the Raoult's law. Moreover, little thought has been given to justify the existence of such "lamellar" or "mosaic-block" structures on a theoretical basis. Since properties such as Plasticity; ferro-magnetism, hardness, diffusion, and others may be explained by structural faults in the lattice network of the crystals: the great importance of a more detailed knowledge of the structure within crystals or grains becomes now evident. Because Of the vast extent of the field Of submicroscopic structures, it shall be the purpose Of this paper only to review the more important of the results obtained by other investigators, especially in Germany, where a great deal of attention has been given to mosaic structure during the last three years. The origin of this mosaic patternt and effects of cold reduction and recrystallization will be shown in further studies later on. Imperfections in Crystals The many terms used in the literature to denote structural types of crystals are often not clearly defined. To clear up some of the confusion, the meaning of the more important terms will be given here. ideal, or perfect without any structural imperfections are called "ideal crystals,,or ''Perfect'' crystals,n meaning a Homogeneous interior structure of atoms, ions or molecules, as the case may be. In other words, at every point in the interior of the crystal exactly the same orientation of the crystallographic axes of the coordinate system would exist. The Surface of such a body, if etched with an appropriate etching reagent, would reflect light with perfect uniformity. Crystals of this type are almost nonexistent. Real Crystals.—L'Real crystals"' may contain various types of structural defects, which can be classified into: (I) lineage structure, (2) mosaic-block structure, (3) lamellar structure.
