I. HISTORY OF OIL DEVELOPMENT IN MEXICO THE occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopote" as a building cement.1 DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de Ias Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 ft. deep was drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said too have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican, Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State -

In 1776 two Franciscan friars, Dominguez and Escalante, started to find a direct route from Santa Fé to Monterey, and in their misguided wanderings northward they reached Timpanogos, now known as Utah lake, where they heard of a much larger body of water to the northwest, of which they were told that it was extremely salt.* They never saw this great lake, because they passed south of it on their way to the Pacific coast. The Dead Sea of North America was discovered in 1835 by James Bridger, a trapper. He and other trappers had ascended the Missouri and had reached the Bear river. A discussion arose as to the course of this river, and a bet was made, to settle which Bridger followed the Bear river to its source, in the Uintah mountains, and from the crest of the watershed he caught sight of the lake, to which he then descended.† He tasted the briny water of the inland sea and wondered if it were an arm of the Pacific Ocean. The lake was first seen by the Mormons on July 24, 1847. A band of them, numbering 145 and led by Brigham Young, had migrated from Missouri in search of a new home in the western wilderness. It is recorded that when Brigham Young stood on the summit of the pass over the Wasatch range and saw the valley of the Jordan outspread before him, he exclaimed: "It is enough. This is the right place". He had seen it in a vision, so he claimed, and foresaw the future glory of the new Zion that was to be planted in that happy

THE spirit of this age encourages the substitution of mechanical for hand labor wherever possible, experience proving that the employer, employer and consumer share alike in the resulting benefits. Through the efforts of the inventor, millions of the laboring class have been raised from being mere contributors of muscular force to be brain workers and directors of those ingenious contrivances now so widely used in the various branches of agriculture, manufacturing, printing, etc. While the genius of invention has accomplished so much in other departments, it seems remarkable that she has not long ere this descended into the coal mine with her wheels, levers, and eccentrics, and provided the toilers there with some device by which their unusually laborious work could be lessened. Until within a very few years, however, little special attention was given to this subject, owing largely, no doubt, to the fact that coal miners as a class were prejudiced against innovations of this kind and ignorantly clung to muscle as the only means of wresting from nature her treasures stored within the coal measures. Thanks, however, to the enterprise and skill of some Scotch and English mine proprietors and inventors, the present decade has seen rapid strides in the right direction, and mechanical coal mining has become a fixed fact in some portions of Great Britain. Making her acknowledgments to the mother country for these earnest and successful efforts, America now comes forward with the Monitor Coal-Cutter as the result of a trial on her part to advance the common cause of economical coal production; for upon cheap fuel the future greatness of both nations largely depends. LEASING the Teapot dome to the Mammoth Oil Co. is the culminating anticlimax of the "conserva-tion movement." It is just the touch required to make a full fiasco of the whole affair. If the revered wielder of the "Big Stick" were still with us, we could hear it fall harder than it did on Ballinger. Of all the oil reserves set aside by presidential decree, there was only one which certainly could con-serve much oil for the future. This was Naval Reserve No. 3, on the Teapot dome, Wyoming. After secret negotiations, carefully guarded from the press and from the knowledge of other oil men, we are suddenly informed that this last and only known chance to save much oil for future naval needs has been given away for early development.

On June 20, 1974, delegations representing the governments of 150 nations convened in Caracas, Venezuela. The occasion: the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. (As this article goes to press, the conference is still in session-Ed). Of all the many issues to come before the conference, none is of greater long-term consequence than the issue of jurisdiction over the seabed-the "land" at the bottom of the world's oceans. On the agenda, with widespread support from a majority of UN members, is a proposal to declare seabed resources "the common heritage of mankind," under the sole jurisdiction of the United Nations. Any would-be miner of seabed minerals would have to apply to a UN seabed authority for a permit, and would be forced to pay the bulk of his profits to a UN fund to aid the underdeveloped countries.

We rejoice that the world-war is ended. We are proud of the part played by the English-speaking peoples-all doing equal honor to the traditions they share in common. One of the compensations for the calamity of the past four years is the fact that the Briton and the American, striving together in the cause of human liberty, have learned to understand and to respect each other. The mother country entered the fight resolutely at the beginning, while yet unready to meet the carefully prepared onslaught of the enemy; then the sons from the overseas dominions rallied to the old battle-cry eagerly and effectively; and last, but not least, the stepsons came from across the Atlantic, speaking the same speech, playing the same game, and fighting in the same clean way. It was a great foregathering of those that use the language of Shakespeare and idealize the principles of liberty for which the friends and associates of Shakespeare stood sponsor three centuries ago. At a time like this it is pleasant to dwell upon the fact that the liberal Englishmen who organized the Virginia company were the pioneers of self-government on the American continent. The Virginia Assembly, convoked in 1619, was the first example of a domestic parliament to regulate internal affairs on this side of the Atlantic.2 The Governor of Virginia, Sir Edwin Sandys, had been a pupil of Richard Hooker at Oxford and from that political teacher he and his friends had imbibed the idea of combining civil liberty with constitutional order. To this group of large-minded Englishmen, the American colonists owed their liberal charters and their successive triumphs over the royal prerogative. Let it be noted that the American colonists had to deal with James II and George III, the two smallest minds in the list of British kings. Another historical note more pleasant to record, is the connection between the two principal groups of American settlers. In 1608 when the Pilgrim fathers, William Brewster and John Robinson, led their Separatist congregation to Holland and there prepared the expedition to America, they were assisted by Sandys and the Virginia Council, who were willing to share their privileges with them. When the Pilgrims set sail in 1620 they had the promise, obtained by Sandys from King James, that they should have freedom of worship,

IN this paper I shall attempt a description of the successful extraction of coal from this property after it had been on fire for probably fifty years, or more, and after attempts, made at various times, which had still left considerable coal behind. The Richmond coal-field has a well-founded bad reputation, arising from the circumstance that many of its collieries have had to be abandoned, from time to time, if not entirely, on account of fires, caused by spontaneous combustion, to which the character of the coal in this field renders them peculiarly liable. While I fully assent to the opinion that this trouble lies in the nature of the coal, which is highly bituminous, and the seams of which are, moreover, divided by slaty bands, through which, as also in the coal, iron pyrites is more or less disseminated, often in microscopically small particles, I must, nevertheless, declare that many lamentable disasters, causing great loss of life and property, could have been avoided if a suitable system of mining had been pursued in all the collieries. If this could not have been done from the beginning of mining in this section of country (the history of which can be traced back to over one hundred years), at least experience enough existed upon this subject thirty and forty years ago to dictate the avoidance of the dangers to a considerable extent. It is therefore necessary here to refer first, in a few remarks, to the character of the coal deposits, particularly in this immediate neighborhood, the Midlothian being one of the oldest and most extensive mines, and some of its coal being much subjected to spontaneous combustion. I must also refer to the history of former managements to explain more clearly the results which were arrived at. A formation tester run on logging cable is now available to the oil industry. It offers a method of safely and rapidly testing possible producing formations in uncased holes. These tests can be made up the hole after running the electric log. Reservoir pressure data is continuously recorded at the surface as the fluid sample is extracted. The tester may be assembled with a reservoir of 1-, 2.75-, or 5.5-gal capacity. A retaining pad on the body of the tool is expanded against the wall of the hole at the exact depth desired; this depth is determined by electrical log control. Two bullets are then fired through the center of the retaining pad which create a connection between the formation and a flow line to the sample chamber. When the chamber is filled, a valve is closed and the fluid sample sealed at maximum pressure. The tool is retracted to minimum diameter and brought out of the hole. Electrical circuits permit a complete recording at the surface of the mechanical operations of the tool as well as the formation pressure build-up and the hydrostatic mud pressure. The tool was introduced commercially during the latter part of 1955 in the Gulf Coasts of Louisiana and Texas. Over 1,000 operations have been made to date (Sept. 1, 1956); 50 per cent of which resulted in successful tests. Failures have been due mostly to ineffective sealing in unconsolidated sands. One major company had 41 successful tests out of 80 attempts with 23 ineffective pad seals. Results for this company were very gratifying as to pinpointing gas-oil ratios, indicating productive permeabilities and aiding in determination of fluid content where electrical log and side-wall coring information were inconclusive. Eight typical pressure curves are discussed (including misruns). Six types of fluid recoveries are interpreted. Eight actual field examples of electric logs, showing the problems solved by the formation tester, are illustrated. The present applications of the tool are discussed: 1. Determination of productive fluid—varticularlv differentiating between gas and oil. 2. Determination of reservoir pressure as an aid to: (a) safety in completion technique, (b) reduction in drilling costs, and (c) reservoir analysis. 3. Determination of minimum gas-oil ratios. 4. Location of gas-oil or oil-water contacts. 5. Recovery of samples for examination and analysis: oil (gravity); gas (hydrocarbon content); water (salinity). Additional applications envisioned for the future are also given: (I) subsurface exploration based on accurate pressure, (2) recovery of fluid samples from the undisturbed reservoir for PVT work, and (3) possible quantitative study of permeabilities or productivity index. Running the formation tester requires no special pre-cautionary measures. Because full hydrostatic mud pressure is maintained at all times, well depth is no problem. Thus, the method allows safe, economical testing in wells which heretofore could only be tested by setting casing. INTRODUCTION A new method of safely and rapidly testing possible producing formations in uncased holes is achieving considerable success. The method offers promise of further advances in reservoir study. Called the formation tester, the new instrument is unique in that it operates on logging cable. It thus offers all the advantages of wire-line operations and becomes an important adjunct to present logging and side-wall coring services. The tester is operated against the wall of the hole at any depth desired. Zones to be tested are usually determined by a study of the electrical and the micro-caliper surveys. Reservoir data, as well as the operating cycle of the tool in the hole, are continuously recorded at the surface during the operation. The tester, as it was originally designed, was capable of recovering a 1-gal sample of reservoir fluid per trip in the hole. Tools with reservoirs of 2.75- and 5.5-gal capacity are now available. The 5.5-gal reservoir is equipped with a segregating system, set before going in the hole, so that the last portion of the recovery (usually 1 gal) is automatically separated from the first portion. Petroleum engineers generally are of the opinion that the flow conditions and, therefore, the formulas that apply to the flow of oil and gas in long pipe lines differ in many ways from flow conditions in oil wells. One of the reasons why the formulas in common use for pipe-line flow do not correctly apply to oil wells is that the flow lines are vertical and not horizontal. Another factor to be considered is that the fluid is a mixture of oil and gas and that the physical characteristics of these two components are affected differently by changing conditions of pressure and temperature during upward flour. Realizing the need for accurate data on flow in vertical pipes under conditions caused both by natural flow and the gas-lift, the U. S: Bureau of Mines has installed equipment at the Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., for the purpose of studying this problem. In additon a study will be made of the comparative effects of different natural-flow and gas-lift methods of producing oil on ultimate production from reservoir sands. Experimental Equipment The experimental equipment consists of a regular oil-field steel derrick, a large pressure tank installed in a concrete pit beneath the derrick floor, compressors and pumps, gas separators and absorbers, metering and control devices, and the necessary pipe connections. The crown-block level represents the derrick floor at an oil well, and the "producing sand" is the pressure tank below the derrick floor. The difference in elevation between the crown-block level and the tank is 90 ft. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the construction and exterior arrangement of the equipment. The success of the experiment will of course depend largely upon the accuracy of the oil and gas measurements and the temperature and pressure determinations. THE purpose of this paper is to invite attention away from the obvious, direct monetary costs of oil-field overdevelopment (as dis-tinguished from "social costs") to a consideration of the role played by the exercise of freedom to create even allegedly excessive1 plant facilities in contributing to the maintenance of equilibrium in the whole economy and in promoting material progress. The obvious and most commonly discussed effect of overdevelop-ment of oil fields is illustrated by the allegation that already the excessive development of the East Texas field has cost upward of $162,000,000;2 in other words, the drilling of 12,500 wells more than the number esti-mated as the requirement for economical recovery of the reserve has unnecessarily raised the total cost of development that amount. Many other illustrations of so-called excessive development of oil pools could be presented. Some of them, like Cushing, Powell and Long Beach, might be drawn from the era antedating widespread discussion in the trade of such matters as optimum well spacing, reservoir energy, the conservation rate of depletion of reserves, etc. Numerous other cases can be found in the records of the current era, which began with the introduction of rationalized restriction of production. Besides East Texas, there may be mentioned Oklahoma City, Centralia and, more recently, the town-lot development of Bloomingdale, Michigan.

ASIDE from being the youngest of the Porphyries-from a producing, not a geologic standpoint-Andes probably presents the most finished piece of engineering, considering the enterprise as a whole: The various units of the mining and reduction works are well designed and efficiently operated, but that is true also at most of the other properties. Some mills or smelters may be superior to those at Andes; but as a complete mechanism for the exploitation of a big copper orebody, the Andes plant stands in a class by itself in many respects. Chuquicamata and Braden, as well as the properties in the United States, grew piecemeal. Capacities were increased and new plants were built as expansion progressed. Andes, on the other hand, existed on paper essentially as it is today before a start was made on actual construction of the reduction plant. More than $35,000,000 had been spent in developing and equipping the mine, and in building the concentrator and smelter, before the first ton of blister copper was produced on January 14, 1927. And another $12,500,000 was spent during the next two years in building the leaching plant and completing other construction. The orebody had been fairly well developed and tentative plans for the erection of reduction works had been made when the post-war depression descended on the copper industry and dictated deferment of the construction of a plant. This delay, however, gave the engineers opportunity to study the problems thoroughly in preparation for the design of the reduction works. The task was performed at Anaconda, Montana, under the direction of Frederick Laist, metallurgical manager, and Wilbur Jurden, chief designing engineer, of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's staff. IN discussing the classification of iron to-day, we are to leave out of consideration the general division into non-malleable or cast iron and malleable iron, as to the adequacy of which no question has been raised; and to confine ourselves to the subdivisions of malleable iron. This has been classified, according to the extent to which the properties imparted by carbon are present (viz., resilience, hardness, strength„ and, above all, the capacity for being hardened by sudden cooling from a high temperature), into (1) wrought iron which cannot be hardened, and (2) steel which can be hardened; and this classification I shall, for briefness, term the carbon classification. Until within a few years all authorities, both metallurgical and general,, have concurred in explicitly recognizing the carbon-given qualities, and preeminently the capacity for being hardened, as the essential qualities of steel ; this is laid down with clearness by every writer on the subject. For several years this old classification has not been sufficient to, meet all our needs, since the genius of Bessemer, Siemens, and, I may add, Holley, has produced wrought iron which has been perfectly melted, and thus freed from certain mechanical adhering impurities. This causes what we call homogeneousness for want of a better word, and gives rise to many important qualities which the old wrought iron had not;. qualities universally recognized, though not readily described. I shall, for briefness, style them the fusion qualities, and a classification based on them., a fusion classification. If a dense fluid such as mud or water is used for circulation, the formation drilled is influenced by a hydrostatic pressure. This pressure depends on hole depth arid drilling fluid density. Laboratory tests indicute that drilling rates in many forri~ations are decreased with increased pressure,—in some cases as much as 90 per cent. A comparison between laboratory and field tests indicates that drilling fluid head affects drilling rates in the field approximately the, same as in the laboratory. Drillirrg rates of many formations are increased by reducing drilling fluid head. INTRODUCTION For many years it has been noted that field and laboratory drilling rate tests did not agree even when the formations tested were the same. For instance, tests of some shales by the Hughes Tool Co. laboratory indicated drilling rates approximately 20 to 30 ft/hour, whereas in the ground this shale would drill only 3 to 5 ft/hour. A possible reason for this discrepancy is the effect of the high pressure which the drilling fluid exerts against the formation at the bottom of the hole. Consider a small element of rock (Fig. II that is to be removed by a rock bit. If the hole is filled with mud or water. the upper surface of the rock element is subjected to a pressure which depends on hole depth and fluid density. The mass of earth around this rock element presses against the circumferential surface and the lower surface. Because of the probability of shearing stresses between the rock element and the surrounding rock, this element is not under true hydrostatic stress. However, as a first approximation for test purposes the rock element was assumed to he under hydrostatic stress. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on some physical properties of rock has been studied.1,2,3 These tests show that the "differential" compres-sive stress:': necessary to cause rup- ture in rock cylinders is greater when tested under high hydrostatic pressure than when tested under atmospheric conditions. These tests were made with pressures greater than 20,000 psi which is in excess of those normally encountered in oil well drilling. Similar tests were made by the Bureau of Reclamation' using pressures equivalent to those encountered in oil well drilling. Again the "differential" compressive stress necessary to produce failure increased with increasing hydrostatic pressure. These tests indicated that drilling rates would probably decrease. Correlation between these tests and drilling tests was not practical. The purpose of this work is to study the effect of mud column pressure on drilling rate, assuming that the material drilled is in a state of hydrostatic strcss. This problem was initially investigated in the laboratory using variable bit loads and confining pressure;. Confirmation of laboratory results was obtained in the field from a series of carefully controlled drilling tests. Because of the necessity of testing many different types of formations. only results from representative formations will be presented here.

The mechanics of impact crater formation in rock, particularly sandstone, has been sutdied, the velocity range being approximately that normally associated with oilwell gun perforators. The bullets were small steel spheres having diameters of 3/16, 9/32 and 7/16 in; impact velocities ranged from 300 to 7,000 ft/sec. The craters have two distinct parts — a cylindrical hole (or burrow) with a diameter the same as that of the impacting sphere, and a wide-angle cup comprising most of the volume of the crater. The burrow is fornred as material in front of the projectile is crushed and pushed aside, forming a cylindrical hole surrounded by a high-density zone. The clip forms as fractures are initiated in front of the projectile and propagate along logarithmic spirals, approximaling maximum shear trajectories, to the free surface of the rock. A most significant observation (made for the first time) was that, below the base of the cup in one type of sandstone, there are a group of similar fractures, not extending to the surface, which are spaced uniformly a few millimeters apart. Each fracture follows roughly the contour of the base of the cup and appears to require a certain threshold impulse to initiate it. These fractures comprise a relatively high fraction of the total, newly exposed surface area. The volume of the material removed by crushing varies as the first power of the impact velocity and the volume removed by fracturing, as the second power of the impact velocity. Penetration varies linearly with the impact velocity and is inversely proportional to the specific acoustic resistance of the target material, the proportionality constant being dependent upon the shape of the projectile. INTRODUCTION Yield of oil from a producing well is frequently enhanced by firing bullets and shaped charges through the well casing into the oil-bearing rock, forming craters and fractures from which oil can flow more readily. The purpose of this investigation has been to develop a better understanding of the mechanics of impact crater formation in rock, particularly sandstone, the velocity range being approximately that normally associated with oilwell gun perforators. FORCES OPERATIVE DURING IMPACT When a projectile moving at considerable velocity strikes a- massive target such as oil-bearing sandstone, intense and complex transient stress situations develop within both the projectile and the rock or sandstone against which it is striking. Usually the struck rock fails, the missile or projectile penetrating into the rock to some depth where it comes to rest or is forcibly ejected from its burrow by expansion of a plug of target material compressed in front of it. When the impact velocity is very high, the projectile itself may fail, breaking apart or becoming distorted; this situation is not considered here, the discussion being limited to nondeforming projectiles. Many experimental studies'.' have been carried out to determine the nature of the mechanics of crater formation and the salient features of the forces coming into play, some of the earliest studies being the French Army experiments performed at Metz between 1835 and 1845.' The stratagem in most instances has been to make a post-mortem examination of the crater, measuring volume and depth of penetration and deducing force relationships from these observations rather than performing the more difficult (usually almost impossible) feat of measuring stresses during penetration. In many materials, the force acting during penetration of the projectile is found to be the sum of two components—(1) a constant force, independent of the velocity, representing some inherent strength of the target material; and (2) a component, proportional to the square of the velocity, representing inertial forces. For such materials, the average force per unit area acting on the projectile at any instant while it is in motion and being decelerated may be written F/A = a + bv2 . . . (1) where v is the velocity of the projectile at that instant, A is the cross-sectional area of the penetrating projectile taken normal to its trajectory, and a and b are constants which are dependent upon the target material and the shape of the projectile. It follows that the total penetration s is given by .........(2) where v, is the velocity of the projectile when it just strikes the target. Values of a and b for spherical projectiles impacting in a loose sand-gravel mixture and compacted earth were obtained in the Metz experiments. For sand-gravel, a and b are 620 psi and 0.0115 (psi) (ft/sec)', respectively; and for compacted earthworks, a and b are 432 psi and 0.0008 (psi) (ft/sec)'. Figs 1 and 2

Removal of bit cuttings is an important function of drilling muds. In an effort to obtain better understanding of the factors influencing the removal of cuttings, an extensive series of laboratory tests were made in which slip velocities of various sizes and shapes of particles were measured in muds of different physical properties. Empirical equations were then derived from these experimental data. These equations show that slip velocity is dependent on cutting size and shape, mud flow constants, and flow state of the mud. Applicability of these equations for field use is demonstrated by comparing computed slip velocities with slip velocities obtained from field tests. Drilling muds have many functions, but perhaps the most important is the removal of bit cuttings from the well. In a 10,000-ft well, the weight of rock which is drilled and must be carried to the surface is over 150 tons. In addition to this, the mud must remove any sloughings from the well bore. Failure of the mud to promptly remove either bit cuttings or sloughs from the well bore causes re-drilling and excessive wear on bit teeth, slows down drilling rate thereby increasing well costs, and greatly increases possibilities for stuck drill pipe when circulation is stopped for any length of time. Drilling muds lift bit cuttings to the surface by means of the upward velocity of the drilling mud in the annulus. Because a density difference exists between the rock being drilled and the drilling mud, there is a difference between mud velocity and the rate of bit cutting travel, called the net rise velocity. To evaluate the ability of any type of drilling mud in respect to lifting cuttings, some method must be known for predicting the rate of fall of cuttings through mud traveling upwards in the annulus. Equations for the rate of fall of particles through a true fluid have been satisfactorily determined by several authors. 1-6 Since drilling muds are not true fluids, but obey the laws of Bing-ham,7 it should not be expected that equations for rate of fall of cuttings in a true fluid would be applicable to plastic fluids such as drilling muds. Several authors have attempted to compute cutting slip velocities in muds using a viscosity value obtained with a Stormer viscosimeter; however, unsatisfactory results were obtained. Pigott8 took cognizance of the phenomenon of variation of viscosity with velocity in laminar Row, and calculated laminar slip velocities using a variable viscosity with Stokes law, and turbulent slip velocities using Rittingers law. The spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus. $ There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others'-', have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. The fact that temper carbon is a mass of flakes and not a solid granule has become well recognized since the introduction of an improved polishing technique8, 9, 10 for cast iron. The problem of deriving from the circular planar intercepts of a mass of spheres of varying sizes their number and size distribution in space has also been satisfactorily solved12, 13 Growth of Nuclei in White Cast Iron It has already been shown1, 3 that the progress of graphitization with time is usual1y consistent with the assumption that nodules grow in size

This paper by Mr. Thorneycroft, Past President of the Institution of Mining Engineers (Great Britain), and chairman of its Subsidence Committee, is a valuable contribution to the assemblage of data on ground movement and subsidence from coal mining. It deals with the effects of advancing longwall, a method almost universal in Europe but as yet little used in the United States outside of Northern Illinois and in a few scattered places elsewhere in thin coal beds, as in the Lexington field, Missouri. Canon City field, Colorado, and the Birmingham field, Alabama. Although by advancing lougwall, a maximum recovery of coal is obtained and it has to be employed where there are weak shale roofs, especially in deep mines, it is a more expensive method of operation unless the mining conditions are suitable, which is unusual in the United States. On the other hand, there is a growing use in this country of what is essentially retreating longwall, with an approximately straight break-line as described by Rayburn.1 With this method, in which the pillars are substantial, it was shown that the ground movement effect is practically identical with that of advancing longwall, hence the value to mining engineers of the precise data given by Mr. Thorneycroft. His study is unusual in several respects; it deals with conditions connected with the mining of a coal bed 20 in. thick, about 490 ft. below the surface, over a mined-out area in a 5-ft. bed about 90 ft. below, which had been mined about 12 years earlier. Both mines passed under Plean House, a building of massive cut stone construction built over a century ago, in which Mr. Thorneycroft resided throughout the under-mining period. Slight cracks opened in the walls as the longwall face approached the house in mining the upper seam, and closed after the face passed and subsidence took place. In the northwest wall, the last wall the face passed under, some stone blocks were broken, which was attributed to a strike period when the advance of face came nearly to a standstill. Other than this there was no perceptible permanent damage, as indicated by the photographs taken by the undersigned in 1923 (Figs. 1 and 2). Mr. Thorneycroft used a novel means of studying the successive positions of the corners of the building: he hung plumb bobs from the eaves and traced the paths of the respective plumb bob points on level surfaces. The angles made by the house walls with the plumb bob lines gave measures of the slope of the subsidence wave at the respective points. A slight upward wave was indicated by the surveys ahead of the subsidence, which would appear to be due to a tilting over of the massive sandstone stratum in the roof measures near the surface, the edge of the coal face acting as the fulcrum.

THE piping and segregation of ingots of steel is a comprehensive subject, and must be studied in reference to the different grades of soft, medium, and hard steel, rather than to discuss it in a general manner, as though applicable to all grades. Rail steel, however, will receive the most consideration in this paper, for the wheel-loads of the motive pourer and rolling stock have doubled from 1890 to 1910. Steel rails and tires which were efficient under the light loads, became less serviceable under the double wheel-loads, quadrupled tonnage, and higher speeds. Bessemer Steel. Bessemer steel of froth 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. of carbon, for splice-bars, spikes, and tie-plates, rises in setting, and is cast in bottle-mouthed molds, which must be capped to prevent an over-flow from the top. This grade of steel rises in the molds and makes a longer ingot than the volume of molten steel when first teemed. The ingots which are allowed to cool and then cut open, show, particularly in the upper part, large occluded blow-holes, and when they are Dot oxidized or do not contain foreign matter, weld more or less completely when the steel is rolled or forged above 1,100° C., and it :is in this way that the blow-holes are closed it the low-carbon steels.

DISCOVERY of new ore in the Eureka district, Nevada, as a result of bold and persistent exploration based on a geologic interpretation of structure has recently aroused wide comment in mining circles. It may therefore be of interest to the profession to have a summary of the historical background and an account of the recent program of development. The mines of Eureka, discovered in the late 1860's, were the first important silverlead mines in the United States. They have a production record of more than fifty-one million dollars.1 After the ore bodies were apparently bottomed in the 1880's, repeated attempts to find new ore were unsuccessful until 1940, when a diamond-drill hole cut a 40-ft width of sulphide ore 1409 ft below the 841-ft level of the Locan shaft. The next hole cut 30 ft, of ore and three additional holes drilled in 1943 and 1944 showed the ore body to be continuous, Shaft sinking to reach and open up the ore body has been in progress since 1945. GEOLOGY Stratigraphy The ore in the Eureka district occurs in a series of Cambrian sediments which is exposed through a thickness of over 6000 ft. The stratigraphic column is as follows:2 [THICKNESS, FI ORDOVICIAN Pogonip limestone (upper part). Thin bedded limestone with some chert. UPPER CAMBRIAN: Pogonip limestone (lower part).
