As director of the Division of Metallurgy of the Technical Section of the Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, from August, 1917, to January, 1919, I devoted much time to the study of the steels best suited to the construction of aircraft. It became apparent at a very early stage of my investigation that the practice of builders varied greatly in regard to the number of different steels to be used, to the kinds of steels, and to their treatment. Some manufacturers employed as many as fifteen steels while the builder of one of the newest motors, favorably passed upon in the United States, assured me that two or, at the most, three kinds of steel were all he needed to produce satisfactory results. In the matter of treatment, the manufacturers were also greatly at variance. Some treated their steel with considerable refinement while others paid but scant attention to this feature. Some manufacturers case-hardened many parts, while others used the case-hardening process sparingly, if at all. Nickel-chromium steels were used at some works for case-hardening while at other plants this treatment was applied exclusively to carbon steels. Air-hardening nickel-chromium steel was used extensively by some and not at all by others. Considerable variance existed likewise in regard to the steels used for admission and exhaust valves. The conclusion was obvious, that no two manufacturers of airplane motors held like opinions as to the steels to be used or as to the treatment they should receive. Was it to be inferred from this that the many committees and associations that had been created, in part at least, for the standardization of aircraft steels had failed to make proper recommendations or that the manufacturers had ignored their recommendations ? Confining our inquiry to the committees and associations that had dealt with this question in England, France, and the United States, it was found that in Great Britain the British Engineering Standards Committee, now the British Engineering Standards Association, had devoted much time to the problem of satisfactory standards for aircraft steels. In April, 1918, this Association presented a set of specifications described as "British Standard Specifications for Aircraft Steels for Government Purchases in the United States of America." A considerable quantity of experimental data is available on the effect of time, temperature, work-hardening and composition on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. There is, however, little unity of purpose or generality in most of the studies and, because the number of variables is large, the results often are not applicable to the problems that arise in practice. Furthermore, the customary expression of the effect of different variables as separate curves or as three-dimensional diagrams with time, temperature and the dependent variables as coordinates, renders the task of selecting the optimum time and temperature of precipitation treatment, with respect to their simultaneous but unequal etfect on the various properties, exceedingly difficult. The introduction of precipitation treatments to raise the yield strength of 24s-type alloys has created a need for a method of correlating and summarizing the effect of time and temperature on the mechanical properties and susceptibility to inter-crystalline corrosion. Correlation is particularly desirable because the choice of time and temperature is of necessity a compromise to achieve the best possible combination of properties, and the optimum conditions cannot he accurately specified unless the data are in a form in which the alternatives can be readily compared. Therefore, the work described here was undertaken to find a common relationship that would be capable of expressing the effect of precipitation time and temperature on the various properties and by means of which the relative effects could be correlated and their interpretation facilitated. Review of Previous Work In connection with an investigation of the interrelation of age-hardening and creep performance of nickel-silicon-copper alloys, Jenkins and Bucknalll demonstrated that the time required to attain maximum hardness and tensile strength could be expressed by a relationship of the form: t = K • io"^ (i) where t is the time in hours and T the temperature of aging, expressed in degrees absolute, and m and K are constants. They also pointed out that this expression is analogous to that which describes the change of the diffusion coefficient D with temperature; namely, D = Ae-~/m (2) Later, Cohen used this relationship in studies of the mechanism of age-hardening of a silver.rich copper alloyZ and of duralumin.3

A formulation is Presented and solutions are given for the problem of transient heat conduction in a sphere that undergoes a spatially uniform radiative heat exchange with its environment. The solutions were obtained by the numerical integration of the appropriate Partial differential equation and are Presented in a graphical form by Plotting a dimensionless average temperature against the Fourier number with the radiation number as a paranreter, for various initial sphere and environment temperatures. In addition to these numerical results asymptotic analytical solutions are also given. PROBLEMS involving the transient heating or cooling of droplets and particles frequently arise and are of importance in metallurgical operations. Spray refining, vacuum degassing, high-temperature gas-solid reaction systems, and pebble heaters are but few of the numerous examples that may be quoted. The practical interest in these problems from a design or operational point of view is to evaluate the change in the particle temperature with the time given its physical properties, initial temperature, and that of the environment. At the high temperatures encountered the principal mode of heat transfer between the particles and their environment is by thermal radiation; in case of vacuum degassing due to the very low thermal conductivity of the gas space the convec-tive components are negligible and radiation is the only heat transfer mechanism. Although much work has been done on transient heat conduction problems, the special class mentioned here, in which thermal radiation is specified at the bounding surface, received little attention to date. One contributory factor to this situation may be the nonlinearity of the radiation term in temperature, which in general precludes the use of analytical techniques and requires numerical or analog solution of the appropriate differential equations. In fact the only solutions of general nature that are available at present pertain to semi-infinite media and slabs.'-3 The work on which the paper reports forms part of a program aimed at the theoretical and experimental study of transient radiative heat exchange between particles and their environment. The purpose of the present paper is to develop a formulation and solutions to the problem of transient heat conduction in a sphere that undergoes a spatially uniform radiative heat exchange with its surroundings. The solutions, obtained by the numerical integration of the appropriate differential equations, will be presented graphically, by plotting dimensionless parame- ters covering the range of variables relevant to metallurgical interests, thus affording a ready reference for design calculations. In addition to these results, approximate analytical solutions are also given which represent asymptotes, corresponding to extreme values of the variables mentioned. FORMULATION Consider a spherical particle of radius, a, initially at uniform temperature, Ti (T measured on the absolute scale), having a thermal conductivity, k, density, , specific heat, C, and thermal diffusivity, a. At time = 0 let this particle be exposed to an environment which is at a temperature T, and subsequently let there be a purely radiative heat exchange between the particle and the environment resulting in a spatially uniform heat flux at the surface. If in addition to the above we make the assumptions that the sphere is a gray body radiator, homogeneous, isotropic, and opaque, and that the physical properties are independent of temperature, conservation of heat in the sphere may be written as follows: The boundary condition contained in Eq. [3] states that the initial temperature of the sphere is considered uniform, equalling Ti, whereas Eq. [4] is readily obtained from symmetry considerations. Eq. The haulage of coal from the face to the tipple is an important enough link in the production of coal to deserve its full share of study and care. In order to obtain a better understanding of mine haulage conditions, a series of tests and investigations has been made which promises to hasten the improvement of present conditions. For hauling coal through the mine and on the surface, locomotives are required, the size and power consumption of which depend on the resistance to motion offered by the mine cars. This resistance is principally caused by gravity and bearing friction. The effect of gravity can be reduced to a minimum by a suitable layout of the haulageways; that is, by arranging the grades in favor of the loaded trips, and by fixing the percentage of grade to that value which gives the lowest power consumption for loaded and empty trains. The bearing friction, which is considerably greater than is generally realized, can be easily reduced to a negligible quantity by the installation of a suitable anti-friction bearing that will stand the rough use and abuse of coal-mine service. The present investigation will deal with flexible roller bearings in comparison with ordinary plain bearings. A number of tests for determining train resistance have been run during the last 2 years both in the bituminous and anthracite coal regions. For all these tests the dynamometer car described in a previous paper was used. This car is equipped with recording instruments and is entirely automatic in its operation. It is coupled between the Iocomotive and train, and records the following quantities: drawbar pull in pounds, speed in miles per hour, and a time interval, usually 5 sec.; the paper travel is proportional to the distance covered by the car. GRAIN boundary sliding plays a part in the high-temperature deformation of polycrystalline solids, and many investigations1-11 have been carried out to determine the deformation contributed by this mechanism. The principal method employed has been to measure one of the components of the grain boundary displacement, see Fig. 1, at a large number of boundaries, and from the mean value so obtained to calculate the elongation contributed by sliding. A formula connecting these mean values and the elongation contributed is evidently required, and many have been derived. They are usually of the form where Egh is the tensile elongation contributed by sliding, is the mean value of the component, x, N is the mean number of grain boundaries intersecting a line of unit length, and K is a dimensionless parameter known as the averaging factor. Table I summarizes the equations used by various investigators. Examination of these shows that their derivations usually involve doubtful assumptions, and are often in serious error. The purpose of this note is to point out that rigorous solutions to the problem of calculating Egb from x have been available in the literature for some years.' Since this is so little known, and also the original derivations do not make some important points clear, it is proposed to rederive the basic equations. These will be extended further, and the conditions in which the extended equations may be applied will be indicated. The mean values of the components of the sliding vector (I, d, and I:, Fig. 1) will depend on the method by which boundaries are sampled in order to make measurements.3,11 Boundaries are usually sampled by marker lines parallel to the stress axis, or lines perpendicular to the stress axis, the measurement being made at the point where the marker line intercepts the boundary. We will denote the mean values determined by these various sampling methods as follows. lT, dT and vT are mean values obtained by making measurements at pointswhere a transverse line intercepts the boundary while lL, dL, and vl, are the mean values from a longitudinal line. The number of boundaries per unit length also may depend on the direction of measurement, and so we define NT and Nl to be the number of boundaries per unit length, after creep, in the transverse and longitudinal directions, respectively.

The results of field measurements using an air injection technique to investigate the integrity of three pillars in the Mclntyre Mines Ltd. 114 seam at Crande Cache, Alberta, are reported. These pillars are shown to be stable and an estimate is made of the strength of these pillars. Using these results, together with Hustrulid's pillar strength formulae, a general pillar strength equation for the 114 seam is developed. This equation takes into account the probability of failure that may be deemed tolerable within the design requirements. The variation of the minimum pillar dimensions with depth below surface for uniform pillar layouts is then examined for a range of tolerable failure probabilities. A general equation of the form B = 2.60 +B Z relates the minimum pillar design width, B metres, with the overburden depth, Z metres, where B is a parameter related to the tolerable failure probability. This equation only applies for 3.05m high pillars with 6.lm wide entries. Finally, the question of what failure probability is tolerable within the design of mine pillars is discussed. This will depend on the support role required of that pillar and the anticipated period over which the pillar must perform that role. Five categories of coal mine pillars are defined, each with a somewhat different role to perform. Tentative design criteria in the form of "tolerable probabilities of failure" are suggested for four of these five categories of pillar. The fifth category of pillar has no reliable support function to perform and support must be obtained by other means.

Earlier work revealed that small amounts of silver (< 0,l at. pct) may exert a marked effect on the structure and aging characteristics of certain a1loys based on the Al-Zn-Mg system. Silver additions have now been made to other age-hardening aluminum alloys, and significant effects have been observed in the Al-Mg system and in several Al-Cu-Mg and Al-Mg-Si alloys. Similarities exist between the behavior of alloys from all four systems, notably that in each case silver stimulates nucleation of an intermediate precipitate which forms when the alloys are aged in the medium temperature range (-120" to 220°C). The mechanism for this effect is uncer- IT has been shown that small additions of silver (<0.1 at. pct) may have a marked effect on the structure and age-hardening characteristics of tain although it is suggested it originates in a preferred affinity between magnesium and silver atoms. There is evidence to indicate that the effects of silver are unique to that element. It is suggested that silver atoms interact with vacancies during low-temperature aging of Al-4 pct Cu and certain Al-Cu-Mg alloys. Silver had little effect on Al-8 pct Zn aged at any temperature. Preliminary observations indicate that silver may have interesting effects on the strength properties of Al-Mg alloys, md a the commercial Al-Cu-Mg alloys designated as 2024 and 2618. many alloys based on the Al-Zn-Mg* system.1"&apos;*

IN conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Müller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at. Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties.

INTRODUCTION Geostatistics have been used for five years at the B. R. G. M. to compute the ore reserve estimation. At present this technic is also used at the beginning of the exploration project to determine the best way to prove the orebody. The best way is a compromise between the cost of the exploration and the precision of the estimation. It is clear that geostatistics cannot be used without any data, but very often an exploration project is decided on an orebody which has already been drilled. Old data can therefore be used. This was the case this year for two orebodies: an iron deposit and a lead deposit. The iron deposit was explored by drifts and has now to be proved. We used geostatistics to determine the best drilling pattern. The variograms computed with these old data showed that an anisotropy existed between the two directions of the orebody, which meant that the drill pattern had to be rectangular. The lead deposit was explored by drill holes and a short drift in part of the orebcdy. The problem was to choose between a regular pattern of drill holes or a long drift and some added drill holes. (communication to the Secretary+). -In this discussion of Mr. Roesler&apos;s paper, I shall follow Kemp in using the term "granite" to refer to the acid rock called syenite by Kimball. Diorite, as I understand it, is the dark basic rock invariably closely associated with the orebodies. The types of rock of intermediate composition, mainly intrusives, are not under discussion. It is difficult for me to conceive that this granite is the ore-bearing agent, for the following reasons: 1. No isolated orebodies in the granite are known. It would seem that if this rock is the mineralizer, some small bodies, or at least patches and small masses of ore so situated would exist. 2. In 1909 the writer conducted explorations on the Pequena and Grande claims about 1 mile north of West Mine No. 5. This work was done after a very careful magnetic survey had shown a large and uniform area of attraction. As exploration progressed, it became evident that in this case the magnetic attraction was due to disseminated magnetite. Much ore of 40 per cent. Fe was found, but very little commercial ore was shown up. This ore was entirely in the diorite and no granite outcrops are near. The occurrence could easily have been described as "ore formation but very little ore." I cannot conceive how a remote granite intrusion could impregnate a diorite mountain with 40 per cent. of Fe, and prefer to believe that this 40 per cent. of iron was in its real home, rather than in a sort of dioritic "boarding house" after having been evicted by granitic parents. 3. The Ocaña mine, which has produced nearly 500,000 tons, shows no evidence that the granite is the mineralizer. This is admitted by Mr. Roesler on p. 1827. 4. I believe it will not be disputed that all the iron-ore deposits extending along the south coast for 60 or 70 miles are of a similar origin. Evidence available at other points might properly be referred to in discussing the article under review. At the La Plata mines, about 60 miles west of Santiago, the writer has also made explorations. No granite is in evidence. At one point in the bed of a creek is a small body of magnetite about 10 ft. long, entirely surrounded by a hard fresh diorite. To me
