A. B. Cummins (Industrial Minerals Review, P. 164) was born in Los Angeles, Calif. and attended the University of Chicago and University of California. He received a B.S. and Ph.D. degree. He has worked at University of California and as a development and research engineer with Celite Co. He is at the present manager of research at Johns-Manville Co. in Manville, N. J. Dr. Cummins is an AIME member and has presented previous papers before it. He resides in Bound Brook, N. J. Aureal T. Cross (Recent Coal Geology Research, P. 202) was born in Findlay, Ohio. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the University of Cincinnati. He received major honors at Coe College and was given a National Research Council Fellowship in geology from 1943 to 1944. He was assistant professor at Notre Dame University from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Cross was a paleobotanist with U. S. Bureau of Mines, Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh. He was assistant professor of geology at West Virginia University from 1949 to date. He holds membership in Geological Society of America, Paleontological Society, Botanical Society, Sigma Xi, and numerous similar societies.

PRESENTATION of the 1922 Washington Award to Capt. Robert W. Hunt, honorary member and twice president of the Institute, was made at the annual dinner of the Western Society of Engineers, in Chicago, on June 18, 1923, in the presence of 250 mem-bers and guests. W. L. Abbott, Chairman of the Award Commission, when delivering the presentation address, said The life of the Govern-ment of this country, as the lives of governments are usually measured, is short, barely 150 years, but meas-ured by what it has accom-plished, this country has reached a venerable age. The first 75 years of our country's existence were necessarily preparatory to the greater developments which came in the second, and that last half of our country's existence is ex-ceeded, by ten years, by the span of life of our honored guest. "Very little iron and steel were produced in this coun-try until after the birth of Robert W. Hunt. And it was not until after 1860, when as a boy of 21 he joined his fortunes with those of the Cambria Iron Works, that the iron and steel business of the country really took root. After a year or two with the Cambria Works, he left a promising position to go into the army, where he served for four years. After the close of the war he returned to the iron works and qualified himself as a metallurgical chemist.

INTRODUCTION Morocco is an important lead-zinc producing country: 120,000 tons of lead concentrates were produced in 1968. Zinc ore production is less, 67,000 tons of concentrates in 1968. Most of the present production comes from three districts (fig.1) (i) Touissit-Bou Beker district, in the eastern part of the country, close to the border with Algeria. (ii) Aouli-Mibladen district, in the central part of the country. (iii) Aouam district, about $0 miles south of Meknes. In the first district lead and zinc are always found together. The two other districts produce mainly lead. This paper will be limited to a short description of geology and mining methods in the three aforementioned districts. More detailed geological informations can be found in the symposium on lead-zinc deposits in Africa (1).

THE mines of The Tennessee Copper Co. are in the Ducktown Basin, in southeastern Tennessee. The ore is a heavy sulphide consisting principally of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and in places running as high as 05 per cent sulphur and iron. Operating mines are the Burra Burra and Eureka. Development of the Boyd ore body was started in 1940. Late in 1939 the decision was made to change from fuse and cap to all electric blasting and at the same time electric cap lamps were installed to replace carbide. These changes were made to improve the safety and working conditions in the mines. Both the Bureau of Mines and explosives manufacturers recommended electric blasting as a safety measure. Until that time, electric blasting had been used only for shaft sinking and in places where it was absolutely essential for safety. Very few men had had experience in this type of blasting, as the places where it was required were those that also required direct supervision. It was necessary for the mining staff to work out methods, procedure, and equipment to he used. In this they were ably assisted by representatives of the explosives manufacturers. Many mistakes were made and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the original plan and installation, show the major difficulties encountered, the remedies applied, and present the practices now being followed. Comparison of costs of the two methods will also be discussed. About six months were required to make the change and eliminate fuse and cap blasting entirely. The first electric blasting stations were installed in November 1939 and the last fuse was taken underground in May 1940. A very unusual condition forced the use of fuse for a short time in one heading after May, but that will be discussed later. ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATION A power line is generally recommended as a source of current where permanent blasting stations are used. The plan worked out for electric blasting was to tap 220-volt alternating-current lines when they were available and use 250-volt direct current from the trolley wire at all other places. A blasting machine would he available at each shaft for places where there were no regular blasting stations and could he used if a regular station should fail. The equipment decided on was No. 16 duplex reinforced lamp cord for lines to within about 50 ft. of the working place and No. 20 lead wire from that point to the shots. An open double-pole, double-throw switch with slate base was put in the circuit, so connected that the down position would close the line to the shots and the up position would connect it to the line from the power contactor. The Giroux Consolidated Mines Co. is equipping a five-compartment shaft at Kimberly, Nev., which will serve the Alpha mine. The depth of this shaft, January, 1910, is 963 ft., and of this depth 948 ft. was opened by raising; 15 ft. of sinking was done so that the bearers, collar-set, and three shaftrsets might be installed and concreted, and with this done it mas possible to erect the necessary surface-equipment for resuming shaft-timbering on the completion of the raise. The arrangement of the shaft-timbering is shown in Fig. 1. At the 1,000-ft. level of the Alpha, and 750 f't. SW. from the Alpha shaft, a 14- by 18-ft. station was cut, and a 25-h-p. airhoist was installed. From here the raising commenced on July 5, 1909. The raise was cut approximately 13 by 21 ft. in area, and supported by timbering with square sets, illustrated in Fig. 2, which shows the division into four compartments. The end compartments, which were used as chutes, had the center girts heavier than in the others on account of the wear from falling rock. The chute-lining was braced by inserting 8- by 8-in. stiffeners parallel to and half way between successive caps. Similarly, the lagging on the wall sides of the cage-way and the compartment for pipes and ladder was stiffened with 4- by 6-in. timbers. In the pipe-and-ladder compartment the chute-stiffeners were reinforced with 8-by 8-in. struts, and as the cage-way was partitioned off by braced lining, there was practically no chance of rock entering the ladder-way in case a chute burst into the cage-way. Over the two center compartments the last two sets were always bulkheaded with 8- by 12-in. timbers, shown in Fig. 3, and from the lower bulkhead the cage sheave-wheel was suspended. Discussion of the paper of F. C. NEWTON, presented at the New York meeting, Feb-ruary, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 473 to 477. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-The results of these large-scale experiments, which were carried on at Perth Amboy, show that there are many differences between theoretical conceptions and their applications to work on a large scale. The author has given reasons why the results of bringing a desilverizing kettle to the high melting point of the zinc-silver alloy, Zn3Ag2, melting at 665° C., are not satisfactory. In all probability the alloy is dissolved in the lead; it may also be decomposed by the lead; the practical result is that this high temperature does not work. It remains now for the laboratory man to carry on systematic experiments

One who has been trained in belief in the law of supply and demand and its effect upon prices finds it difficult to adjust himself to the minute regulations imposed by the New Deal, and also to the bewildering changes of government policy as expressed within a short period of time between the antitrust laws and the N.R.A., and later by the Bituminous Coal Conservation Act of 1935. A survey of the coal industry since the World War, both in this country and Great Britain, however, shows that regulation of some sort is needed if any stabilization is to be achieved and if the wage structure and economic welfare of the many communities dependent solely upon coal are to be maintained. Let us look at what has happened to the industry since 1920, which can be considered as the end of the period affected by the war influence. This discussion will be confined solely to bituminous coal, although many of the general conditions are equally applicable to anthracite, the position of which now is at least as bad as that of the softer variety. Since 1920—to the end of 1934—the production of coal has decreased from 568.7 million to 358.4 million tons, or 37 per cent; the number of mines from 14,766 to 6,258, or 58 per cent; the average annual production per mine has changed from 38,512 to 57,425 tons, or 50 per cent. The number of large mines has increased considerably, and the number of men employed has decreased from 639,547 to 458,011, a reduction of 28 per cent, while the average output per employee has changed from 4.0 to 4.4 tons, or an increase of 10 per cent. The average price per ton of coal at the mine has varied from $3.75 to $1.75. During that time wages decreased largely until 1933 and since that time have increased, until now the rates paid are considerably above those in other occupations, although the actual yearly earnings are low, because of part-time work. From 1920 to the signing of the Jacksonville wage agreement in 1924, about two-thirds of the men were union members and practically all of the nonunion mines were south of the Ohio River; with the fixing of the high wage scale of that agreement, which soon proved to be an uneconomic one, many of the mines found that they could not retain their business, so gradually changed to nonunion. MEASURES appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient knowledge1-19 has accumu-lated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors-the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Con-trol of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious air-borne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects-one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer.

B. S. Crocker (Screened Ore Used for Fine Grinding at Lake Shore Mines, P. 499) was born in Toronto, Ont. and attended Saint Andrews College and University of Toronto. He received a B.A. and M.A. degree. He was graduated with honors and received a fellowship in metallurgy. Mr. Crocker did post-graduate research at University of Toronto from 1933 to 1934. He was employed by Beattie Gold Mines in 1933. He did research in milling at Lake Shore Mines from 1934 to 1936 and from 1936 to 1940 was head of experiment laboratory. At the present time he is mill superintendent with Lake Shore Mines at Kirkland Lake, Ont., Canada. Grinding, cyanidation, flotation and roasting are of special interest to him. He is a member of AIME. Mr. Crocker has presented several papers before C.I.M.M. and also holds membership in this society as well as Professional Engineers of Ontario. Skiing, yacht racing and photography are his favorite hobbies.

Dear Sir: In conversation here with Mr. Sales, who is much interested in the work of the Committee on Mining Geology, he made a suggestion which you may be interested to hear. He, and many of us, are interested in papers along our lines of special activity, as they appear from time to time in the Institute Transactions, and often take these papers with us into the field. It appears that the work of special committees which are being formed is likely to result in a much greater number of available papers than the Institute has ever before been called upon to publish. This year's Transactions, for instance, have to be published in two volumes. Why would it not be a good plan, instead of printing heterogeneous volumes, to classify the papers into several volumes, under main headings such, for instance, as iron and steel, precious metal mining, and mining geology ? We would, in fact, be very glad to suggest this as a topic for discussion, if you think it wise, in response to the Secretary's letter of April 18. Very truly yours, J. W. FINCH.

The two mining districts of Pachuca and Real del Monte, well known for their antiquity and the extraordinary richness of their veins, are situated, 3 miles apart, only 62 miles north of the City of Mexico—the first being on the western, and the second on the eastern slope of the Pachuca range of mountains which bounds the great valley of Mexico. Close to the celebrated mining region of Pachuca is located the city of the same name, capital of the State of Hidalgo, at 2460 meters above sea-level and 20° 07' 35" North latitude, with 35,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom work in the mines; the remainder being Government employees, merchants, and a small number engaged in less important industries. The city extends along both sides of the canada which carries the waters of the river called "Avenidas de Pachuca," the banks of which are united by four bridges at regular intervals. The attention of the traveler approaching the city is first attracted by the appearance of the mountains, barren of vegetation, bounding the city with rocky cliffs and steep declivities, the grades of which serve as foundations to the irregular and varied groups of houses. Above these are the dumps, and, close by them, the mouths of the shafts, covered with conical tile roofs. The smoke of the chimneys, the noise of the mills and the appearance of some of the constructions reveal at first glance the industrial character of the place. At the left of the entrance to the canada, the mountain of San Cristobal, celebrated for the famous vein of Xacal, one of the richest and earliest exploited in the district, rises 450 meters above the city.

IN view of the gradually decreasing known reserves of high-grade manganese ore and the rapidly increasing consumption of iron-manganese alloys in the steel industry, it is well to turn our attention to the development of low-grade manganiferous ore deposits and to the utilization of these ores in steel manufacture. The dependence of this country on imported manganese ore and ferromanganese has been forcibly brought to the attention of steel makers during the last few years by the cessation of manganese-ore imports from Russia, the restriction of manganese-ore imports from India and of ferromanganese imports from Europe. Should the importation of manganese ore from Brazil cease, the steel industry of this country would face a serious situation. The present practice of steel making requires ferromanganese in large quantities and ferro-manganese of the grade used at present can be produced only from high-grade manganese ores such as the United States appears to possess only in insignificant amounts. There are in the United States, however, large reserves of manganiferous iron ore which could probably be used extensively in the steel industry if certain changes in the practice of steel manufacture were made. Thus high-grade manganese ore could be conserved. Among the most important deposits of manganiferous iron ore in this country are those of the Cuyuna iron-ore district of Minnesota. It is probable that in case of restriction of foreign supplies, the users of manganese in the United States would have to rely to a large extent on the Cuyuna district to make up the shortage.

Both articles appeared in Mining Engineering. He is presently employed by Standard Oil Co. of California as a special tax counsel. He holds an LL. B and an LL. M from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Mining from the University of California. He has been chairman of the Taxation Committee of the Minerals Economics div. of the AIME. Borden fishes, plays golf, prospects, and performs mineral analysis as hobbies. [ ] Charles C. Towle (co-author, Uranium Deposits of the Grants District, New Mexico, P. 1037) graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Geological Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Nu; Theta Tau, an honorary professional society; Blue Key, honorary social society; the glee club and quartet, and a member of the student council. He has been a mucker, driller, flotation operator and mill shift boss for the Clear Creek-Gilpin Co., Idaho Springs, Colo.; Geologist, chief engineer, and chief geologist for Patino Mines & Enterprises Consolidated, Inc., Bolivia; appraisal engineer and part-time geology student, Denver; office geologist for Geology Dept., special Engineering div., Sea Level Canal Studies, Panama Canal; and geologist, div. of Raw Materials, USAEC, Grand Junction, Colo. He is currently chief of the Denver Exploration Branch, div. of Raw Materials, USAEC, Denver. Towle was at one time a tournament golfer, playing three and four times a week. While working in South America he played in numerous tournaments. Today, although playing only occa sionally, he shoots in the low eighties.

THE Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite of Ordovician age, is composed of 538 ft of dolomite and limestone. Numerous bands, layers and nodules of chert, arenaceous and shale zones are present. The characteristics displayed by these features have been useful in mapping, prospecting and mining. Perhaps a better understanding of the origin of these zones will increase their usefulness.

I. Historical. Barite has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. Geographical and Geological Distribution. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State—namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties: Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties—Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell—but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

BY means of the C-SiC thermocouple1, liquid metal temperatures have been found to vary much more than was previously supposed, and fortunately these variations can be directly associated with some of our former knowledge which combined to form the "art" of liquid-metal manipulation. COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THIS DEVICE Several types of installations are operating in different plants. There are so many variables in steel plants in regard to operation, pro-cedure, arrangement of pouring platforms, ladles, etc., that most of the installations now in service in this country are "tailor-made"; never-theless, it is felt that satisfactory gains have been made inasmuch as each installation has indicated some effect of temperature upon the metal-lurgical operation, and has pointed the way toward technical and finan-cial benefits. In most cases, it has been necessary to accumulate the temperature data until sufficient metallurgical information is available for the drawing of conclusions. When mechanical difficulties have been eliminated, a distinct correlation of these factors has been obtained. The installations now in service. are used for the determination of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace prior to tapping and in ladles from both acid and basic furnaces prior to pouring. Some of the installations are in shops making the higher priced steels; others are in "tonnage shops." The errors of human element, smoke screens and emissivity corrections connected with the use of the optical pyrometer do not affect the C-SiC thermocouple readings. The accuracy of the C-SiC- thermocouple and the temperatures measured are discussed later in this paper.

The following is a very rapid method for determining copper in steel. I have found it to give results very closely agreeing with those obtained by galvanic precipitation of the copper. Five grams of steel are dissolved in a mixture of 100 C.C. of water and 10 C.C. of sulphuric acid. When all is dissolved, add 2 C.C.

BETA brass (consisting of approximately equal atomic proportions of copper and zinc) exists as a random solid solution at high temperatures, but at low temperatures [ ] an ordered structure is stable, with the copper and zinc atoms occupying alternate sites on the body-centered-cubic lattice. On cooling, ordering commences at a temperature of 450° to 490°C., depending on the composition. The degree of ordering progressively increases at lower temperatures until it becomes virtually complete at about 100°C. The electrical resistivity of the alloy illustrates the changes clearly (Fig. I). This type of reaction has been a favored subject for study by physicists. An [ ] excellent summary of the theory is to be found in a paper by F. C. Nix and W. Shockley.1 All published data on electrical conductivity, specific heat and other properties agree in indicating that the ordering reaction in beta brass takes place so rapidly that it cannot be prevented or even retarded by quenching. THE lead-mining industry of Missouri, as of other parts of the Mississippi basin, appears to have been paralyzed by the shock of competition with the mines of the States and Territories further west. It is difficult for establishments working galena ores, too poor in silver to pay for extracting it, to compete with the producers of the argentiferous carbonates of Utah and Colorado, who look upon their lead as a byproduct of little value, and are satisfied if it pays the charges of transportation, or the loss in smelting for silver. But simultaneously with this depression in the lead-mining of the Mississippi States, the development of new zinc deposits has caused a notable revival in the mining of zinc ores. There has recently been a sudden and strong rise in the price of spelter, which, though probably to a large extent temporary in character, has given important encouragement to prospectors and miners. Apart from the general recovery of business in the United States from the prostration of the past six years, the cause of the advance in spelter has been the falling off in production, resulting from the shutting down of several leading Western works,-the Martindale and Carondelet works, at St. Louis, and the Consolidated Company in Kansas. At the same time, the principal works at La Salle, Ill., were undergoing repairs, and produced less than usual, while the sheet-mill of Matthieson & Hegeler, at that place, was running as usual; so that this concern, ordinarily a large producer, entered the already depleted market as a buyer. These causes are in their nature transitory, and it is quite likely that spelter will be superabundant in a few months. Having lately received from a well-informed Missouri corres¬pondent some samples of the zinc ores and a general account of the ore deposits of Southwest Missouri, I have thought that it might interest the Institute to examine these specimens, and to hear such brief statements concerning the region as I am able, upon good authority, though without the aid of any personal investigation on the spot, to give. The zinc-bearing territory in Southwest Missouri appears to be very extensive; that is to say, zinc ores have been mined during the last year at various points throughout a district extending from the eastern edge of Kansas, west of Joplin, to a line some 50 miles east
