THE normal statistics of supply and demand of petroleum and its products have little more than local influence on the market movements of oil securities. The two major reasons for this condition might be called the technique of production and the technique of refining. The speed of improvement in each and the complete lack of control of their, inter-relation have resulted in overproduction of both crude oil and gasoline in the face of immense in-crease in demand. The trouble with oil securities has been that of the mushroom radio companies, where too frequent changes have killed the possibility of profits. It is a case of too much efficiency. During the past ten years there has been continual talk of wasting reserves of crude oil. This has been based on "present methods of production." Yet the methods of ten years ago in the oil industry are as antiquated today as the kerosene lamp.. The fear of famine has transformed the industry. The refiner, through the cracking process, has doubled the gaso-line output from a barrel of crude oil, thus doubling reserves and changing a current undersupply into oversupply. When the automobile driver desires he can again double reserves and transform want into abundance by demanding an automobile which will deliver twice as many miles per gallon of gasoline. Entirely apart from refining and in complete dis-regard for its needs, the oil producer has forged ahead at a pace too rapid for his own good. The science of geology has developed with experience and' lavish expenditure into a constant danger to profits in the production of oil. Two and one-half per ;cent of the producing wells in the United States are yielding one-half of the oil, while their flush production is used as an excuse to force down the price of crude oil until 200,000 wells must be abandoned or produce at a loss. The fabulous yield of the new high-pres-sure fields enables the fortunate owners to make a profit regardless of the price of oil. Such a condi-tion is unhealthy from the standpoint of oil itself and as a national policy. It is manifestly absurd to suppose that such a condition can endure for a gen-eration. There will come a day when the sequence of discovery will be temporarily broken, and at that time the consumer will be forced to pay heavy interest on the foolhardy policy of today.

The characteristics of alloyed anodes and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption have been noted previosly ously in the literature.' This paper presents data in continuation of the subject given in an earlier paper by the authors.2 As noted in the authors1 previous paper, the objectives of this work are the reduction in the cell voltage and the purity of the cathode product resulting from the use of alloyed lead anodes. The fundamental facts developed in the previous paper were: (I) that the presence of a small amount of calcium lowers the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. below that of pure lead; and (2) that thallium when present to the extent of 4 per cent. rendered the anode practically stable, thereby lowering the contamination of the cathode by lead to a very insignificant amount. The specific features determined in this recent work are as follows: 1. The lowest limit of calcium in the lead which will still give maximum lowering of the anode potential. 2. The characteristics of the thallium-calcium-lead anode. 3. The characteristics of the silver-calcium-lead anode. 4. The characteristics of the thallium-silver-calciurn-lead anode. It was determined that 0.1 per cent. calcium in the anode was sufficient to lower the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. Table 1 shows the characteristics of alloyed anodes tested. OIL, the abundance of it in the hands of the Allies and the lack of it in the hands of the Axis, played a major role in winning World War II. It bids fair to implement the winning of the peace. In fact the signing of the revised agreement on petroleum between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the United States of America on Sept. 24, 1945, may be considered as the first step in establishing a new pattern in foreign relations by our Government. The significance of this agreement on petroleum is that it was arrived at on the part of the United States of America through the advice and consent of the most interested parties, the leaders of the petroleum industry and the Government, distinctly a first step toward unifying the power of business and the strength of the Government, which places us on a par with the British Crown which has always had the advice and counsel of its business leaders in formulating its foreign trade policies. And what is the thing so patently discernible in this new first step toward winning the peace? It is that the petroleum agreement, the first draft of which, signed in Washington on Aug. 8, 1944, almost caused an epidemic of apoplexy among the leaders of the oil industry, represents the desire of the people most concerned with the problems of petroleum both at home and abroad. This new agreement, which will come up before the Senate for ratification this month-hearings will commence in January - derives its "power from the consent of the governed," something about which our forefathers were vitally concerned once upon a time.

THE object of the Bradley process is to free manganese oxide from its associated gangue and separate the contained iron oxide by dissolving the manganese and precipitating it from the solution. 'The fundamental features of the process are : making. both 1 a manganese ore and an iron ore; effecting a separation of manganese .and. iron by means of selective roasting; leaching- the manganese from the roasted ore by using ' ammonium sulfate; precipitating the manganese by using the ammonia gas generated during leaching; fixing the precipitate by oxidizing with air; breaking down and reforming the ammonium sulfate, so that daily very little additional ammonium sulfate beyond that originally charged into the system is required; washing the manganese precipitate and the iron-silica residue and evaporating the liquor to conserve the dissolved salts in the moistures of these two products and 'to reduce the sulfur content,; drying the precipitates; magnetic wet-concentration of the iron-silica residue; sinteriny the manganese-and .the' iron-concentrates.

INTRODUCTION The resurgence of coal mining activity in the United States, brought on by the spiraling costs of fossil fw1 energy in the Seventies, has come at a time of intense public concern for the quality of the environment. Notwithstanding pressure on our economy to develop alternate sources of fue1 energy to the import of oil, the legislatures of several states have reacted to public concern over the environment by passing strict regulations aimed at con- trolling the subsidence effect s of underground mining. Agencies of the federal government charged with assistance to the mining industry, including the Department of Energy and the Bureau of Mines, have sponsored a number of instrumentation and field measurement projects aimed at the development of subsidence prediction models that can aid the mine operator's task of subsidence control. There are good empirical models developed in Europe for subsidence prediction, but they were made possible by a large body of mining-induced subsidence data collected there over a long period of time. No com- parable subsidence data base exists in the United States, and consequently empirical modeling of subsidence is not a realistic approach for our near term needs. Moreover, the geologic and topographic diversity of the several coal regions in the United States is expected to necessitate the development of several empirical models, each one expected to be relevant to its own region. Because of the time and costs that are likely to be involved in an empirical modeling approach, it is considered more expedient and cost effective to develop a general, mechanistic model for subsidence prediction purposes. In order to develop such a model, it is necessary to investigate and quantify the mechanics of the subsidence process from the mine level up to the ground surface. The series of projects discussed in this paper are designed to achieve this objective and include the following work: (1) the identification of geotechnical instrumentation that will pro- vide mine level overburden and surface subsidence data. (2) a field demonstration of selected instruments, and (3) documentation of case histories for complete subsidence mechanics, using the demonstrated and preferred instruments. An identification of feasible instrumentation and monitoring techniques was completed by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) in 1977 (O'Rourke and others). This paper discusses a demonstration of those instruments at a mine in Utah, and at two subsequent projects, currently underway at longwall mines in Colorado and West Virginia. 'he latter two projects when complete will provide documented case histories of subsidence mechanics. The process of optimizing subsidence instrumentation and monitoring techniques to the conditions encountered during installation and monitoring for these underground mines is shown to be an evolving one, and one which has had some notable successes to date. INITIAL DEMONSTRATION The initial design and demonstration of selected monitoring systems was carried out at the SUFCO No. 1 mine, near Salina, Utah. The instrumented panel was approximately 152 m wide. 640 m long. and was 290 m to 320 m deep. The mined height of coal. seam averaged 2.4 m. The mining method was room and pillar using continuous mining machines. This method allowed some monitoring of the supported condition during development, and eventually allowed monitoring of a caved system when both chain pillars and room pillars were extracted on retreat. The two instrument systems shown on Table 1 were selected from the earlier feasibility report for demonstration at SUFCO No. 1. Collectively, the two systems, one for a fully-supported mining method and the other for a fully-caved method, incorporate most of the instrumentation to be found within all five systems listed in the earlier feasibility report. The instrumentation includes surface, subsurface and mine monitoring installations. All of the SUFCO instruments selected to meet the specifications of the general instrument types listed on Table 1 were manually operated. That is, data from the installed system could only be obtained while a person was there to physically observe or operate the system readout. Automatic data recording equipment was available for some installations, but the objectives were to keep the systems as simple as possible for the demonstration project. A complete description of the surface, sub- surface and mine level instruments, and the demonstration project results are given in WCC (1982), and selected features are discussed in this paper.

Ground support at the Thompson Mine emphasizes scaling, rock bolting and wire mesh screening on the backs and walls of all underground stoping and development areas and also full column grouted cable bolting in the bulk mining areas. This paper describes the equipment for the point anchored rock bolts as well as the full column cable bolts. Modifications in design and testing of all components and procedures has ensured a safe and efficient method of ground support for the mining conditions existing at the Thompson Mine.

OUTSTANDING FACTORS that have largely induced the current great interest in the reopening of old mines and the search for new deposits are the increased relative value of gold, the certainty of a market for it, and the decreased activity and poor profits in other lines of endeavor. It is easy to understand why a miner out of a job and unable to find any other means of livelihood would naturally take to the hills with his pan, pick, and shovel; but never before have inexperienced, would-be prospectors and placer miners materialized from the factories and farms, the haberdasheries, and the oil and gasoline supply stations, in such numbers as the last couple of years have witnessed, except when rich strikes of the proportions of a Klondike have been made. What, may one ask, has occasioned this condition? Unemployment has put these men in a receptive frame of mind, and newspaper and magazine articles have done the rest-- The Gold Miner of Los Angeles (a new weekly), The Mid- Week Pictorial (New York) for Sept. 3, 1932, and Popular Science Monthly for August, 1932, for instance. Even the Saturday Evening Post had an article on a promising part of Colorado. Stories that good wages may be had for the panning in nearly every western state have been featured by daily papers, popular "scientific" magazines, and quasi- technical journals. These tales have been eagerly grasped by thousands of people whose ignorance of mining has only served to increase their enthusiasm.

MANY changes were made in the methods and equipment used in the mining of pebble phosphate rock in the generation immediately preceding the present World War and it would be extremely interesting to note the improvements that will be made during the next generation. Literally, much water has gone over the dam since the days when we used local cordwood for generating steam and drying pebble phosphate rock. belt-driven centrifugal pumps operated by steam engines. and floating dipper or centrifugal dredges; when we removed overburden by small steam shovels and transported it by dinkey locomotives and six-yard cars; when washing machinery was installed on wooden structures the washers being replaced every four to six years. Those were the days when men were plentiful, and 47 different mining companies were selling their products, based on .decidedly meager information; and. like so many mining operations, little thought was given to conservation. As the importance of phosphate rock has become more prominent in the thoughts of our economists, a more intelligent approach has been made to mining problems. WELL known as an outstanding practical metallurgist, the Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division also possesses a rare combination of research and administrative abilities. Louis W. Kempf was born in Muskegon, Mich., on March 22, 1898. Following his graduation from high school, he obtained considerable experience in the automobile industry while employed by Continental Motors, the Studebaker Corp., and Dodge Brothers. He enlisted in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in 1917, and served overseas with an aviation unit. In 1919, Mr. Kempf entered the University of Michigan and earned both B.S. and M.S. degrees. While there he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Alpha Chi Sigma, and Gamma Alpha. In 1924, the Aluminum Co. of America secured his services as a research metallurgist. With a steady job he married Elizabeth Skelley in Cleveland in 1926. They have one son now seventeen. After six years Mr. Kempf was made manager of the Cleveland research division of the Aluminum Research Laboratories which position he held until last year. In 1945 he was promoted to assistant director of the Laboratories. He will direct research involving process metallurgy in Cleveland and New Kensington.

An official of one of the prominent iron companies of the South recently made the following statement during a discussion of the present conditions of the Southern iron business: " The trouble with us in the South has been that we have been satisfied to buy iron and coal lands, build blast-furnaces, and make pig-iron. We stopped at pig-iron, and as a result we are all poor. The South needs diversified industries, and needs to work up its raw products into articles the Southern market can use. If we had realized this sooner, some of us might now be rich." The South is awakening to this view, and in the Birmingham district alone one basic steel-mill is already in operation, and in a year's time another and much larger one will be turning out rails and shapes, with rod- and wire-mills in prospect. It is to chronicle another metallurgical step forward in the same district that I have prepared the following description of the new by-product retort coke-oven plant recently put in opera-

The striking features of American Bessemer practice aré its large output and its low initial silicon and initial temperature. These are interdependent. Large outputs implies short blows and short intervals between blows. Short blows imply low silicon and fast blowing. Low silicon implies short intervals and fast blowing. Our blows are short because we have little silicon to remove, and because we remove it fast by supplying blast rapidly. We get enough heat even with little silicon, because our blows and the intervals between them are so short that relatively little heat escapes from our vessels. Were we to lengthen our intervals, or to blow more slowly, we would have to meet the increased loss of heat from our vessels, either by using more silicon, or by melting hotter, i.e., by burning more coke, in the blast-furnace or in the cupola. Finally, our short intervals imply powerful machinery, efficient organization, and extreme specialization and subdivision of labor, which can be profitable only when the output is large. Let, us now take these points up in more detail, first glancing at some examples of our large outputs, given in Table I., and of the composition of our iron. Output.—On presenting such results to some foreign metallurgists, I have been told, " Oh yes, we quite understand that. You really turn out no more steel than we do. As a matter of personal pride, your manager gets up a tremendous spurt for a day, or even a week, crowds on men wastefully, rushes through great quantities of metal, and then for months afterwards has to recuperate. The machinery has been strained ; the owner's money has been wasted ; the men have been prostrated—all to gratify the manager's vanity. Your average output is no larger than ours." Personal pride has, doubtless, played its part; without it we would still be savages, or apes, or mollusks, if you prefer. These baser motives are the mudsills of progress, the soiled roots of that growth of which civilization is the flower. Great outputs were made

HIGH-GRADE manganese ore, from which manganese is obtained commercially, is not found in large quantities in any major steel-producing nation in the free world. The U. S. is a "have not" nation with respect to deposits of directly mineable high-grade manganese ore. Known resources of 48 pct Mn or better grade ore amount to less than 200,000 tons. In 1950 the U. S. steel industry consumed 1.8 million short tons of metallurgical grade manganese ore that contained about 800,000 tons of manganese. About 16 pct of the manganese content was lost in processing, so that about 650,000 tons, or 13 pounds per ton of steel actually entered into steel production. Under present practices use expands directly with steel output, and by 1975 the demand in both the U. S. and the rest of the free world is expected to be roughly 60 pet greater than in 1950. In peacetime about 80 pet of manganese consumption goes into steel production; high-manganese steel, dry cells, and chemicals account for the remainder. The manganese supply problem centers around high-grade ore for ferromanganese production. Use of ores containing less than 35 pet Mn sharply increase the costs of making ferromanganese. Use of ferro-manganese of grade below 70 pet in turn requires changes in steelmaking that increase steel cost. Under normal conditions the present small domestic production cannot be expected to increase. Major resources in the U. S. consist of 12 low-grade deposits. The cost of mining and treating these ores to extract a product as good as that yielded by imported ores is at least twice and in some cases more than four times the 1951 price of foreign ores delivered to the U. S. However, as long as trade relations and overseas shipping are not interrupted, deposits in India, Africa, and Brazil can meet steadily increasing demand at approximately present costs. Cost considerations indicate that the U. S. should continue to rely upon overseas sources for its peace-time supply, and that this situation is satisfactory. But, this does not take into account the question of how the U. S. will be able to meet its needs in war. Position of the Rest of the Free World In 1950, free world steel producers outside the United States, with a steel output of 70 million ingot tons, consumed about 1.3 million tons of metallurgical-grade ore. Their manganese ore demand, expected to increase directly with steel production, will by 1975 be about 2.3 million tons. Russia possesses over half the known manganese ore reserves of the world and is producing twice the tonnage of any other country. It supplied more than a third of the U. S. manganese requirements up to 1938 and again in 1948, but by 1950 Soviet manganese exports to the free world had virtually ceased. The free world's supply of manganese now comes mainly from India and Africa. Somewhat over 10 pet of U. S. imports came from Brazil and Cuba. Security Considerations In the event of war the U. S. might be substantially cut off from 90 pet of present sources. Reduction in manganese specifications might cut consumption by over 10 pet without seriously affecting steel quality. By elimination of losses in the production of ferromanganese savings as high as 10 pet might be possible. But, wartime manganese requirements cannot be met through conservation alone. To meet possible future emergencies the U. S. should continue its comprehensive security program for manganese, including stockpiling and research on the economic use of low-grade ore, domestic ores, the recovery of manganese from slag and the reduction of manganese requirements in steel production. If this work, including additional pilot plant operation is pursued vigorously, it should be possible in an emergency to get an adequate supply of manganese from domestic sources. The national stockpile then can be looked upon as a source of supply during the period of at least 2 years required to reach full-scale production from low-grade resources. Ferromanganese Smelting In comparison with smelting of pig iron, ferro-manganese smelting is a very wasteful process. Under present ferromanganese blast-furnace smelting practice, about 8 pet of the manganese in the furnace charge is lost to the slag, and roughly the same amount is lost to the stack gases; the total loss approaches 15 pct. Present practice is a compromise between excessive slag loss and excessive stack loss. In fact, it may be seriously questioned whether conventional blast furnace design is suitable for manganese smelting. U. S. Resources The known manganese deposits of the U. S. contain a total of 3500 million long tons of raw material and 75 million long tons of metallic manganese. More than 98 pct of this contained metal is in 12 large low-grade deposits of which the most important are those at Chamberlain, S. Dak; Cuyuna, Minn.; Aroostook County, Maine; and Artillery Peak, Ariz. Reserves of high-grade ore (48 pct Mn) amount to less than 200,000 tons. About 20 million tons of ore average over 15 pct Mn, and when grade is decreased to 10 pct Mn reserves amount to about 100 million long tons. If cut-off grade is decreased to 5 pet Mn, resources amount to 800 million long tons. Many of these low-grade ores may be beneficiated by flotation or other concentration methods. Pyrometallurgical Methods For smelting ferromanganese, it is essential to have an ore containing at least 50 pct manganese, with an Mn:Fe ratio of about 8:1. Direct smelting of 20 pct Mn concentrates is not promising. The only method that offers any promise involves two-step smelting.

From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

The hydraulic cyclone, in simple or modified form, is finding increasing application in metallurgical processing. In this article, the author considers several aspects of conventional applications, less conventional applications and some potential uses of modified cyclones. Information concerning the mechanism of separation within a cyclone and the effect of the major variables is summarized. During the past twenty years, and especially in the last decade, hydraulic cyclones have found increasing application in metallurgical processing as classifiers and, under special circumstances, as thickeners. To a more limited extent cyclones have been used to extend heavy, or dense, medium separation into the finer size ranges, and several attempts have been made to separate dispersions of immiscible liquids with a view to use in the field of liquid-liquid extraction. A large proportion of published work reports incomplete data, applicable only to particular systems. The more useful papers, covering data of relatively wide significance, have been reviewed recently in considerable detail1,2 and no attempt will be made to cover the same material in the present paper. However, before considering several aspects of conventional application, less conventional applications and some potential uses of modified cyclones, it is considered pertinent to summarize information relating to the mechanism of separation within a cyclone and the effect of the major variables. LIQUID FLOW PATTERNS At any point within a simple cyclone the liquid velocity may be resolved into three components, i.e., the tangential or swirling velocity (v), the vertical velocity (w), and the radial velocity (u). The relative values of these components at selected positions within a typical cyclone have been established for water. 3 The extent to which similar flow patterns exist in systems of considerably higher viscosity, or apparent viscosity, operating under conditions of reasonable pressure drop, is not known with precision, but indirect evidence indicates that up to approximately five centipoise there is no marked change. Beneath the bottom of the vortex finder, envelopes of constant tangential velocity are cylinders coaxial with the cyclone, and, at any horizontal level, starting from near the conical wall, this component of velocity increases with decrease in radius (r) according to the relationship vrn = constant (where 0 < n < 1) This holds to regions near the center of the cyclone where v reaches a maximum value at a radius somewhat smaller than that of the inside wall of the vortex finder. At this point, the centrifugal acceleration, v2/r reaches a maximum value. As the radius is further decreased the tangential velocity decreases so that v = r. THE formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.1 It is necessary here only to enumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type-i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: X2 = kt [I] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k the reaction rate constant, and t the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such. a plot has been con¬sidered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.3 In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation k = Ae-Q/RT [2] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The relative, thickness of each phase in a diffusion layer is proportional to the concentration gradient and to the rate of diffusion in that phase .4 The reaction layers tend to have a

Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel&apos;s at the University of Toronto and Bliel&apos;s at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field.
