The first diesel-powered Scooptram has now been in service for 21/2 yr at the I-C mine of Martin County Coal Corp. It has become the workhorse of the operation, being used around the clock many days. The fleet of nine 20-ton capacity Teletrams used behind three Jeffrey Heliminers now have more than 1 1/2-yr experience in the Coalburg mine. They have been exposed to some difficult conditions which, include steep grades, water, mud, and rutted roadways. These units have proven to he both rugged and powerful. The safety components and shutdown systems make these haulage units very safe for underground coal mines. A clean-burning engine, a satisfactory exhaust conditioning system, and good ventilation are the keys to maintaining a safe and healthful atmosphere for the underground operators and other employees.

Statistical techniques are being widely used in geochemical exploration to answer questions involving sample spacing, analytical and sampling errors, thresholds, data smoothing, and optimum combination of several elements into one measure of favorability. The applications of sampling theory, mean and standard deviation, trend surfaces, moving averages, factor analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, and regression analysis to these questions are discussed with examples. Although the techniques are very useful as means of handling large amounts of data, they require as much geological and geochemical judgment as any other approach to data interpretation.

It was reported earlier that francolite and dolomite from south Florida deposits cannot be selectively floated using conventional conditioning with sodium oleate as the collector. However, dolomite could be separated from francolite if the minerals were first conditioned at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at a lower pH. An optimum separation was achieved after reconditioning at a pH below 4.5. Reconditioning pH and collector concentration were determined to exert a major influence on the selectivity. Flotation, adsorption, and transmission infrared spectroscopic results are presented to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the observed selectivity.

The Bureau of Mines, US Department of the Interior, conducted studies to recover phosphate from four dolomitic southern Florida deposits not currently mined. The samples contained 5.8-10.2% P205 and 1.7-4.8% MgO. Chemical analyses of sized fractions indicated that no pebble concentrate, +1.2 mm (+14 mesh) could be produced from these samples. A scheme was developed that consisted of desliming, grinding, scrubbing, and redesliming the ore to produce a flotation feed. Conventional one-step fatty acid fuel oil batch flotation tests on the samples resulted in concentrates containing 29.0-31.3% P205 at flotation recoveries ranging from 72.4 to 96.1% of the flotation feed. The MgO content of the concentrates ranged from 0.47 to 1.36%. Continuous flotation of the Manatee No. 2 sample indicated that commercial-grade phosphate concentrates analyzing 31.3% P205 and 0.55% MgO could be produced with a flotation recovery of 89.9%. The MgO content of concentrates obtained from the Manatee No. 1 and Hardee samples was 1.20 -1.36 %, respectively. Leaching with aqueous SO2 reduced the MgO content of these phosphate concentrates to 0.5 and 0.8%, but with a concomitant loss in phosphate recovery of about 10%.

IN the late 1920's rotary drills began to replace the churn drills in the petroleum industry, but until the middle 1940's the churn drill was the only widely accepted means of drilling large-diameter blastholes for quarry operations. The Calcite plant of the Michigan Limestone Div., U. S. Steel Corp., was one of the first to experiment with rotary drills for quarry blasthole drilling, and the first to employ compressed air on a fully rotary rig to cool the bit and raise the cuttings to the collar of the blasthole.

In the technical literature of 1965 and 1966, there were several papers about future power for mining and construction equipment. Most of these papers made the same predictions: •More power •Better reliability and durability •Ease of service and maintenance •Operating economy •The possibility of future environmental concern •The entrance of the gas turbine In the five years that have since passed, some of the 1965-66 predictions have at least partially come true, while others have not been fully realized. Actually the list still appears sound today. Priorities may have changed and details may be different, but the main points cover the requirements for future prime movers quite well.

SOME years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal. cracks that occur in die-casting dies.1 The life of dies was considered in relation to the casting temperature, the material used for the die, and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mech-anism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines.

Highland, granted a leave of absence for health reasons. Mr. Carson, a graduate engineer of Michigan College of Mining & Technology, has been a member of the company's Huntington sales force since 1939, the past two years as assistant district manager. James Parnell Caulfield, former general manager of the Utah Copper Div. of Kennecott Copper Corp., has been appointed assistant general manager of Kennecott's Western Mining Div. L. F. Pett, general supervisor of operations of the Utah Copper Div., was named Mr. Caulfield's successor as general manager. William D. Charles, on completion of his graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, accepted the position of mineral engineer with American Cyanamid Co.

The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcrop- pings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined.

As the specific gravity of low-carbon steel seems to be attracting considerable attention as a means of détermining the quality and value of the metal, I give here a few of the results of a long series of experiments recently made by me. The object of the experiments not requiring more than approximate correctness in the third place of decimals, the extreme precautions to obtain accuracy which are sometimes used in determining specific gravity were not observed. But each piece of metal was carefully cleaned to remove scale, rust, dirt, etc., thoroughly dried, and then weighed in air, all weighings being carefully repeated. The balance used was one of Troemner's finest, and sensitive to one-tenth of a milligram. Before weighing in distilled water, care was taken to remove, as far as possible, the air enclosed in the pores of the metal. The pieces of metal were suspended by means of fine silk thread, a correction of course being made for the weight of the silk. Care was taken that the water in which they were weighed should he always at the same level, and, as far as possible, at the same temperature.

THE development in the Gulf Coastal Plain for the year 1923 was entirely devoid of any spectacular feature and was considerably less than that of 1922. No large fields were discovered and the principal advances lay in the extension of the old fields and the finding of a new dome and other possible producing structures, which, however, so far, have given only small wells. While the production of some fields, such as those at Hull and Orange, was materially increased at times by comparatively large wells, the output as a whole shows a marked decrease over that of the preceding year. MALL generators and motors are required to Soperate, in some critical applications, at temperatures where cold-worked silver-bearing copper re-crystallizes. Copper containing up to 30 oz Ag per ton has been used for many years to build the highest grades of commutators and slip rings. With failure of commutators impending because silver-bearing copper cannot withstand the stresses imposed at these higher temperatures, Cr-Cu was tried as a substitute with varying degrees of success. Cr-Cu proved difficult to fabricate because a critical heat treatment was necessary to obtain sufficient ductility. Besides, its rupture strength was shown to be low at operating temperatures, its electrical conductivity lower than desired, and its cost high. Furthermore, it often contained hidden flaws. The Nippert Electric Products Co. set out to find a better material by undertaking a research project with the stated objective of providing a material suitable for commutators that would have 1) a softening temperature above 750°F (400°C), 2) a minimum electrical conductivity of 90 pct of that of pure copper, 3) a strength not less that that of cold-worked silver-bearing copper, and 4) a materials cost of not over 1.5 times the cost of copper containing 25 to 30 oz Ag per ton. No commercial alloy met these specifications. However, it was found that copper containing from 0.18 to 0.35 pct Zr could be produced quite easily in the laboratory, and promised to fulfill the major requirements noted above. Particle size distributions of the solids fraction in typical coal preparation plant black water have been evaluated. The carbonaceous and mineral fractions were found to have distinctly different size distributions: the mineral matter being significantly finer than the carbonaceous material in all cases. Based on analyses of 13 samples obtained from the Appalachian, mid-continent and western regions of the US, it was found that, on the average, 83% of the mineral particles but only 41 % of the coal particles were finer than 44 pm (325 mesh). Typically, the size distributions of the mineral matter fraction tend to be bimodal, probably due to the presence of relatively coarse quartz, calcite, pyrite, etc., together with much finer clay particles.
