The production of petroleum in Mexico during 1930 was approximately 39,600,000 bbl., or 5,188,000 bbl. less than in 1929. The decline which has continued for the last eight years, will place Mexico in fifth or sixth rank as an oil-producing country. The production of the northern and southern fields near Tampico declined over 5,250,000 bbl., while that of the fields in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec moderately increased. The wildcat operations which have been conducted for some years near the international border along a 290-mile belt, extending roughly 170 miles northwest and 120 miles southeast from Laredo, Texas, have so far met with little encouragement, although the oil possibilities of the region warrant the belief that commercially productive fields will be discovered eventually. An interesting development during the year was the starting of construction of the oil pipe line from Palma Sola in the South Fields near sea level—over Sierra Madre at 8660 ft.—to Atzcapotzalco, a suburb of Mexico City at an elevation of 7350 ft. This line, about 146 miles long, has a diameter of 10 in. and an estimated daily capacity of 10,000 bbl., and with its terminal refinery at Mexico City will form a transporting and refining unit which should materially affect the distribution and marketing of refined products in the Republic. Development During the past year 148 wells were drilled, as compared with 214 in 1929 and 371 in 1928, the percentage of producers being 49 as against 47 in 1929. With the exception of one well in San Isidro, at the extreme southern end of the Golden Lane, the Jardln Paso Real area was the only sector of the old fields where new development could be considered as successful, all other producers brought in during the year being drilled in nearly exhausted pools to be operated as ('strippers." Northern Fields A total of 71 wells were drilled in the northern fields, of which 22 were producers; one well in Ebano was estimated at 5000 bbl. per day, while the general average of all producers was less than 300 bbl. The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, and absolute thermoelectric properties of some binary terminal solid solutions of silver were determined. Equations are given which permit the calculation of these properties. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution and electrical conductivity of binary alloys of silver.1-l2 Some of these alloy studies are apparently complicated by doubtful chemical analyses. In some cases the limits of solid solubility are questionable. Those references which present electrical properties of binary silver alloys usually give just one particular set of characteristics such as conductivity (or resistivity). As a means of checking and extending this earlier work, an investigation was undertaken to describe and calculate the resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, and thermoelectric power of binary terminal solid solutions of silver. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pet (by weight) of impurities. These materials were carefully weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony systems were melted in Al2O3 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and poured into split graphite finger molds. The aluminum, germanium, arsenic, lead, and bismuth alloys were melted in machined graphite crucibles, and they were also covered with boric anhydride and poured into split graphite finger molds. Plans for a multi-million dollar uranium mill in southeastern Utah were confirmed by Vanadium Corp. of America officials. Atomic Energy Commission has been dickering with two private firma for mill construction at Hite, Utah and Shiprock, N. Mex. Colorado Fuel & Iron has contracted to purchase all manufacturing business, plants and inventories of John A. Roebling's Sons Co., through a wholly owned subsidiary. CF&I currently the nation's ninth largest steel producer, will operate the new subsidiary under the Roebling name.

Consideration has been given to the merging of a size reduction model and a mineral liberation model to permit prediction of mineral composition as a function of size. The results of this integration of size reduction and mineral liberation models are discussed from both theoretical and practical viewpoints using batch grinding data for a magnetic iron formation sample as a demonstration vehicle.

Cyclone thickeners have emerged from the development stage and now can be accepted as useful tools for the recovery of fine coal from a preparation plant circulating water. As primary thickeners in a closed water circuit operation, their advantages over conventional thickening methods are twofold-the lower initial investment and reduced area requirements.

Salicylaldehyde, a chelating agent for tin, has been found to function as a collector for the flotation of cassiterite. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly show that salicylaldehyde can form a chelate compound in bulk and at the surface. Results are also given for the flotation of a tin ore with this reagent.

THE Coal Hydrogenation Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Missouri, was completed early in the year 1949. It has operated more or less continuously since completion except for the time required for making necessary inspections, repairs, and alterations between runs. Operations have included a short vapor-phase run on North Dakota lignite-tar distillate oil in 1949, followed in 1950 by four comparatively short exploratory liquid-phase runs and one vapor-phase run on Rock Springs [ ]

In the work of exploring certain gold-bearing gravels in the American Valley, Plumas Co., California, entrusted to my charge by Prof. A. Agassiz, of Cambridge, and Q. A. Shaw, Esq., of Boston, it became necessary to sink a shaft through loose materials containing in some layers large quantities of water, and I have been compelled to devise a new method which has proved successful and may be of service elsewhere.

Research was conducted into cold briquetting dross arisings and metallurgical coke fines from an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.) as an economic means of agglomerating fine materials for smelting in a blast furnace. A mechanism was postulated whereby strong bonds were developed within the briquettes; laboratory scale smelting trials and full scale plant trials are included in the paper with a description of a two tonne/hour briquetting pilot plant. Benefits from smelting briquettes in an I.S.F. were measured directly in metallurgical coke savings and, indirectly, by a significant improvement in sinter plant productivity.
