Drilling activity in Nebraska continued to decline during 1944. Nine tests for oil and gas were completed during the year and four wells were drilling at the close of the year. Four wells were drilled in Richardson County, three in Hitchcock County and single wells were drilled or drilling in Butler, Gage, Holt, Nemaha and Scottsbluff Counties. Only one of the completions resulted in commercial pro- duction, the others being abandoned as dry holes. A number of stratigraphic test holes were drilled in the state by the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., in Johnson, Otoe, Chase, Dundy and Garden Counties. No new fields were discovered during 1944 but the limits of the Barada field, Richardson County, was extended a short distance southward. Oil production continued to drop and about two thirds as much oil was produced in 1944 as in 1943.

GEORGIUS AGRICOLA was born at Glauchau, in Saxony, on March 24th, 1494, and therefore entered the world when it was still upon the threshold of the Renaissance ; Gutenberg's first book had been printed but forty years before ; the Humanists had but begun that stimulating criticism which awoke the Reformation; Erasmus, of Rotterdam, who was subsequently to become Agricola's friend and patron, was just completing his student days. The Reformation itself was yet to come, but it was not long delayed, for Luther was born the year before Agricola, and through him Agricola's homeland became the cradle of the great movement ; nor did Agricola escape being drawn into the conflict. Italy, already awake with the new classical revival, was still a . busy workshop of antiquarian research, translation, study, and publication, and through her the Greek and Latin Classics were only now available for wide distribution. Students from the rest of Europe, among them at a later, time Agricola himself, flocked to the Italian Universities, and on their return infected their native cities with the newly-awakened learning. At Agricola's birth Columbus had just returned from his great discovery, and it was only three years later that Vasco Da Gama rounded Cape Good. Hope. Thus these two foremost explorers had only initiated that greatest period of geographical expansion in the world's history. A' few dates will recall. how far this exploration extended; during Agricola's lifetime. Balboa first saw the Pacific in 1513 ; Cortes entered the City of Mexico in 1520; Magellan entered the Pacific in the same year ; Pizarro penetrated into Peru in 1528 ; De Soto landed in Florida in 1539, and Potosi was discovered in 1546. Omitting the sporadic settlement on the St. Lawrence by Cartier in 1541, the settlement of North America did not begin for a quarter of a century after Agricola's death. Thus the revival of learning, with its train of Humanism, the Reformation, its stimulation of exploration and the re-awakening of the arts and sciences, was still in its infancy with Agricola. We know practically nothing of Agricola's antecedents or his youth. His real name was Georg Bauer (" peasant "), and it was probably Latinized by his teachers, as was the custom of the time. The commercial success of this low-grade property by Houston Oil and Minerals Corp. (succeeded in interest by Houston International Minerals, Inc.) resulted from credibility of analytical data furnished by the property vendor upon initial examination and from other favorable geologic criteria in evidence; from negotiation of lease terms not detrimental to project economics; from entrepreneurial exploration management; from an encouraging attitude by the US Forest Service; and from the favorable mining and metallurgical characteristics of the ore body. The potential of the property, but not its location, was brought to the attention of the project manager (the author) by the vendor some time before accepting employment with HO&M. In December, 1977, the vendor granted an examination to the project manager, by then an employee; and a lease to the 15 mining claims embracing the property was executed in April, 1978. (See Fig. 1.) Field work and extensive claim staking in this virgin district commenced in May, with drilling beginning in August. At the point that an apparent discovery was recognized in October, only $98,000-including property payments-had been expended on the project. By April, 1979, the deposit was drilled out on 60-m (200-ft) centers and a preliminary re- serve estimate, discounted cash-flow analysis, and recommendations for mine development and additional exploration submitted to management-all at a cost well below budget. The property was recommended for acquisition after matching favorable geologic criteria developed by the project manager. Favorable lithology, structure, and geochemical zonation converged on a subdued low-temperature hydrothermal alteration zone subtly expressed on a pediment surrounding the heart of the property, from which approx [ ]

The original Dorrance breaker of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. was erected in 1883. The coal beds were clean and dry, consequently a dry preparation system was used, consisting of revolving cylindrical screens for sizing and hand-picking, to remove the few impurities from the run of mine coal. The picking or cleaning room contained long parallel rows of chutes with seats mounted on them, for the use of the breaker boy, who bent over the chute and picked out the refuse material from the coal as it gravitated down the chute. The introduction of dry mechanical pickers, of, the sliding frictional type, in the early nineties lessened the number of boys, but hand-cleaning on the coal and refuse discharge ends of the mechanical picker was necessary. The Pardee spiral pickers, which were brought out about 1900, were better than the gravity pickers and gradually replaced them. In 1912 the breaker was entirely remodeled, although the original frame was retained. The revolving screens were replaced by shaking screens, and Pardee spirals were installed on all sizes of coal from egg to pea coal, inclusive. Hand-picking still was necessary on the coal and refuse ends of the spirals, although the changes did result in a reduction of the former breaker force. As mining advanced, and the thick clean bed became exhausted, it was necessary to mine veins containing a high percentage of impurities, which complicated the preparation problem. The most serious difficulty was the increase in the quantity of damp or wet run of mine, which could not be fully cleaned on the spirals. When this quantity exceeded approximately 5 per cent. of the feed, it was necessary to send the excess of the wet coal to the company's Prospect colliery for wet washing. This plan worked well for a time, but as the amount approached 15 per cent., with the prospect of a further increase, the company considered the building of a wet-washing plant. The Dorrance breaker was the only dry-cleaning plant operated by the company. At the seventeen other collieries, wet washing was employed, and jigs, both plunger and pan, were used. All the practical methods used in the anthracite fields were investigated, and it was finally decided to adopt the Rheolaveur system. The One Hundred Eighteenth Meeting of the. Institute was held at the Milwaukee Auditorium, on Tuesday,. Oct. 8, to Thursday, Oct. 10, inclusive, 1918, under the joint auspices of the Committee on Iron and Steel (Chairman, Prof. J. W. Richards), and the Institute of Metals Division (Chairman, William M. Corse), and simultaneously with sessions of the American Foundrymen's Association and of the. American Malleable Castings Association. It was preeminently a war meeting. It was attended by 104 members of the Institute. The social features, so far as the members of this Institute were concerned, were slight, but generous and appropriate entertainment was offered to the ladies, consisting of automobile sight-seeing trips, reception, concert and dance on Tuesday evening, a theatre party Wednesday evening, and -a banquet in-the Auditorium Thursday evening, at which the speakers were Charles M. Schwab, Director General of the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, Major A. Radclyffe Dugmore, and W. H. Blood, Jr., Assistant to the President of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation. A joint session was held on Tuesday morning, at which an address of welcome was delivered by Hon. Emanuel L. Phillipp, Governor of Wisconsin, with a response by Benjamin D. Fuller, President of the American Foundrymen's Association, and the following addresses: Activities of the Army Ordnance Department, Especially as Applied to Foundry Matters. By C. S. I take pleasure in transmitting herewith "Petroleum Development and Technology in 1927," in which we have attempted to set out in a series of 40 papers with attendant discussions the advances made in Production Engineering and Refinery Engineering during the year. The volume also contains a digest of round table discussions on Petroleum Engineering Research problems and Petroleum Engineering Education. In addition to the above we set out in 16 papers a review of production of each producing area of the United States and of the more important foreign countries, together with a review of the world's production and forecasts for 1928. We also include 8 papers on the Economics of the oil industry. The papers and discussions included herein represent the contributions of more than 200 engineers, including the foremost in each line. These papers were presented at technical sessions held in Fort Worth in October, 1927, and at the annual meeting in New York in February, 1928. We desire to express our thanks and appreciation to all those who have contributed to this volume. As in previous years, we have attempted to emphasize the value of both written and impromptu discussions. -We have made a practice of returning all impromptu discussions to the authors for correction and amplification, and because of this practice we feel that the discussions contained herein are in very presentable and readable form. It was decided by the nominat,ing committee when meeting for thc purpose of nominating officers for 1928 to eliminate the vice-chairrnanship for Transportation Engineering, as that branch of the industry seemed to come more naturally under the activities of the American Petroleum Institute. It was also decided by this committee to institute a new vice-chairmanship for Petroleum Engineering Research. Wc have had heretofore round table discussions on engineering research, but through the newly created vice-chairmanship, to which Mr. L. C. Uren was elected, we expect to have more comprehensive sessions on engineering research than heretofort.

Shoveling ore cost so much at Tyrone during the year 1917 that it was deemed advisable to conduct tests to see where the fault lay. These tests were in the nature of time studies and extended over a period of very nearly a year. No data were available on this work to supply a starting point, so it was necessary to begin in a very elementary way, to find out the capacity of the average Mexican laborer. To' obtain a basis for comparison, it was necessary to determine the capacity of various types and sizes of shovels, so as to know whether the 21-1b. (9.5-kg.) load was the best load underground as well as on surface. A list of essential factors influencing shoveling was also made out during the course of a short series of preliminary time studies, and the motions involved in shoveling were analyzed and subdivided for convenience in studying. The necessary forms and record sheets were also decided upon at this time. A second short series of tests was then conducted on the surface, so as to be able to estimate the negative effects of underground work on the shovelers, and to minimize, as far as possible, the need for studying obviously poor types and sizes of shovels under the difficult conditions to be encountered in the mine. The test work underground consumed by far the greater proportion of the time and was divided into three series: Shoveling directly into a chute; shoveling into a wheelbarrow and tramming to a chute; and shoveling into a car and tramming to a chute. In each series the following points were determined for various lengths of time worked: Number of shovelfuls handled per minute, effect of distance thrown on shoveling speed, amount of rest required, amount of time consumed in tramming and dumping, proportion of working day occupied in shoveling, total tonnage handled during various working periods, effect of distance on tonnage handled during the day.

R. F. WOOD,* Sandusky, Ohio.-I made a few tests of gun-metal specimens, after I noticed the results on quenching -reported by the Bureau of Standards. The data of one such test are given herewith. The bars were heat treated and quenched before they were machined, and in all cases they were brought up to 700° or 800°. They became extremely brittle,, showed almost no elongation, except such as was caused by the failure of the pieces to fit together after they were pulled, and the tensile stength was reduced from around 35,000 to about 13,000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the weakening effect of the quenching seemed to be almost as marked when the bar was allowed to slowly air-cool from red to black, and then quenched, as it was by quenching directly from the red heat. Test Bars.-Rough size, 9/16 in. diam. over test section, grips 13/16 in. diam. Cast two in a flask, one on each side of a block 8 by 4 by 1 in. and fin-gated thereto from the grips but not from the test section. Poured with flask in inclined position, with gate to lower end of block and riser from upper end of each test bar. Bars were machined to ½ in. over the test section, after heat treatment. Casting the Bars.-Charge of 1500 lb. consisting of 400 lb. of new metals and 1100 lb. of G turnings and scrap was melted in open-flame oil furnaces and then poured into a 1-ton ladle. From the ladle 150 lb. was poured into a preheated No. 50 crucible, land from this the flasks of test bars were poured. The six flasks are indicated below by the numbers 1 to 6 and the bars in each flask by the letters a and b, thus 4a and 4h, for instance, were the two bars in flask No. 4.

The following communication was recently sent President Wilson by J. Parke Channing, Chairman of the Engineering Council: The transportation systems of our country are largely the creations of its professional Engineers. This statement can be made without disparagement to the statesmen, the financiers, the manufacturers, the lawers, the educators, the mechanics, the laborers and many others, who, with the Engineers, have contributed to the development of transportation. Through all stages of preliminary exploration, final survey, construction, upkeep and operation, in financial management, and in adjustment of the relations of transportation to the public, the genius and knowledge of the Engineer are essential. Not only in technical physical matters, but also in determinations of policy, his contributions have supplemented and must ever supplement those of other men. These declarations hold good for all the carriers of commerce, by rail, by highway, by water, by pipe-line, by wire, or by air. Hence, it follows that the body established by Government to regulate the commerce, the carriers and the ways of communication, embracing so many engineering features, should number among its nine members, men of engineering training and experience. Engineering Council, being aware of a vacancy on the Interstate Commerce Commission, begs leave to request the Chief Executive that in filling this vacancy, he give earnest thought to the selection of a man who, to his other qualifications, adds the training and experience of an engineer familiar with transportation problems.
