Use of high-expansion foam for controlling mine fires was first made known in a published announcement in June, 1956, by representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, Buxton, England. In 1957, the United States Bureau of Mines, interested in this new method of controlling mine fires which could not be approached or extinguished by conventional methods, began to investigate the practicability of the foam-plug technique under American mining conditions at its experimental coal mine in Bruceton, Pa. Results of these experiments proved the potentialities of controlling mine fires with foam. The USBM conducted numerous demonstrations at its experimental mine to show this foam-plug method to groups of coal mining men, many of which were impressed by the action of the foam as it moved away from the netting toward an open fire and its ability to control the fire in a very short time.

Thayer spoke briefly on present labor conditions at Butte, A. A. Blow discussed labor conditions in New Zealand, and Hennen Jennings discussed the fundamental problems of industrial unrest. Few people in the industry today are competent to comment on the O.G. system for vessel covers, but with papers as well prepared as Mr. Bradley's we will soon be well informed. I would like to direct these comments to Mr. Klaes of Ford Motor Company. Mr. Klaes' description of their steaming hood agrees with our experience at Weirton. We have been able to stay within design limits and, as a result, have had few problems with our auxiliary equipment. Our main problem, as with Ford, has been thinning of our vessel cover tubes. At Weirton, controlled circulation, high pressure boilers are in use as heat recovery units above the BOP vessels. The boilers are provided with "off cycle' oil firing equipment. A Venturi type wet gas scrubber follows the boiler to complete the vessel draft system.

Application of an hydraulic mining system to a troublesome overburden removal project has unlocked an estimated three million tons of ore reserves at Caland Ore Co., Ltd.'s open-pit iron operation in Ontario, Canada. The mine, operated by Caland under a 99-year lease and royalty agreement with Steep Rock Iron Mines, Ltd., would have been forced to curtail its mining operations later this year as the economic limits of the original pit design were being reached. As a result of the stripping program, which uses a tandem set of Marconaflo jet slurry systems, Caland officials now estimate that mining will continue into 1977. These reserves, added to existing ore stockpiles, are expected to sustain the firm's pelletizing operation well into 1981. In addition, Caland engineers are initiating studies to continue mining since the ore body, to date, has yet to bottom out.

AS part of a study of deformation twinning in bcc crystals, solid solutions of beryllium in iron have been found to twin profusely when strained slowly at room temperature. This note reports some crystal-lographic aspects of the operative mechanical twin modes in a quenched Fe-5 wt pct Be alloy. After melting twice under a partial pressure of helium, the alloy was homogenized, cut into pieces 7 to 10 mm on an edge, solution treated at 1130°C,1 and quenched. Debye-Scherrer patterns confirmed
