Manganese Products, Inc. has developed a chemical process for the recovery of high-grade manganese oxides from low-grade manganese ores. Ammonium sulphate is also produced. Manganese ore is leached with sulphurous-sulphuric acids. The impurities are removed with ammonia, heat, and air. Manganese oxides are produced by addition of more ammonia and air under pressure. Ammonium sulphate is recovered from the remaining solution.

The early stages of recrystallization in a 70 pct cold-rolled Si-Fe crystal of the (110) (0011) orientation were studied with a Siemens electron microscope. Orientation studies based on electron-diffractzotz. patterns confirm the results of previous texture analysis. The driving energy for recrystallizatior and the critical radius for growth were calculated from the dislocation energy and the energy of the subgrain bourzdaries, and it was found consistent with the observed size of the recrystallized grains. The recrystallization characteristics of crystals with different initial orientations are discussed. The recrystallization of cold-rolled (110)[001] crystals of Si-Fe has been widely studied by various investigators.1-4 Their results on both deformation and annealing textures are in good agreement. The rolling texture after 70 pct reduction consists mainly of two crystallographically equivalent (111) [112] type textures and a minor component of the (100) [011] type. The latter is derived from the deformation twins, or Neumann bands, which are formed during the early stages of deformation and later rotate to the (100) [011] orientation upon further rolling reduction. Between the two main (111) [112] type textures, there is some orientation spread, because of which very low intensity areas appear in the pole figure. If these very low intensity areas are considered to be a very weak component in the texture, then a (110) [ 001 ] orientation may be assigned to them. When this rolled crystal is annealed at a sufficiently high temperature for recrystallization, the texture returns to a simple (110) [001]. The purpose of the present investigation was primarily to seek a better understanding of the recrystallization process by using the electron transmission technique. The (110) [0011 type of crystal was selected because orientation data for it are well known from previous studies with conventional techniques. Direct observations on the recrystallization of such a crystal have also been made by using a hot-stage inside the electron microscope, and the results will be reported in another paper. MATERIAL AND METHOD A single-crystal strip of the (110) [001] orientation was prepared from a commercial grade 3 pct Si-Fe alloy by the strain-anneal technique.= The strip was approximately 0.014 in. thick, and was rolled 70 pct at room temperature to a thickness of 0.004 in. Specimens were cut from the rolled strip and were annealed in a purified hydrogen or argon atmosphere. They were then electrolytically polished in a chromic-acetic acid solution to very thin foils. Best results were found by polishing first between two narrowly spaced flat cathodes with the specimen edges coated with acid-resisting paint, followed by polishing between two pointed electrodes until a hole appeared in the center as described by Bollmann.6 It was found that a thin transparent film always formed along the thin edges of the polished specimen. This film was then removed by rinsing the specimen very briefly in a solution of alcohol with a few drops of HF or HCl. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) The Deformed Crystal. From the electron-diffraction patterns taken at various areas of an as-rolled specimen, the texture components as deduced - from ordinary pole-figure analysis were confirmed. Over most of the areas where orientation was examined, a (111) pattern with a [112] direction parallel to the rolling direction was obtained. This corresponds to the main deformation texture of the (111) [112] type. In a few areas the diffraction pattern was (100) [Oil], corresponding to the minor-texture component derived from the Neumann bands. The (110) [001] orientation, which corresponds to the very weak intensity area in the pole figure, was found infrequently. A typical example of the deformed matrix having the (111) type main texture is shown in Fig. 1, where (a) is the microstructure and (b) is the diffraction pattern taken from that area. It was also frequently observed that in other areas more or less continuous rings of weaker intensity were superimposed on the simple (111) diffraction pattern, suggesting the presence of a wide range of additional orientations. Other evidence indicated that the recrystallization characteristics are different in these two different types of areas. The hot-stage observations which provide this evidence will be discussed in another paper. AS shown in Fig. l(a), numerous dislocation-free areas of very small size are embedded in the "clouds" of high-dislocation density. This article demonstrates that the Gilvarry and Klimpel-Austin equations for the random fracture of solids are incorrect by deriving intuitively correct expressions for simple cases and showing that the foregoing equations do not reduce to right answers. It is the purpose of this article to point out serious errors in some existing treatments of the random fracture of solids. Gilvarry ' gives the equation where B(y,x) is the cumulative fraction by weight of particles which fall below size y when particles of size x are broken. The constants i, j, k contain shape factors and densities of flaws leading to propagating fracture surfaces. The authors believe this equation to be incorrect. Klimpel and usttin' give where r~ is the number of fracture planes originating from edge flaws (per L where L is the edge length of the original particle), rs is the number of fracture planes originating from flaws on the particle surface (per S where S is the surface of the original particle) and rv is the number of fracture planes originating from flaws within the particle volume. This equation is also incorrect. The failures of these equations will be demonstrated by deriving intuitively correct expressions for simple cases and showing that the Eqs. 1 and 2 do not reduce to the correct answer. In this process, the flaws in statistical reasoning inherent in the derivations of Eqs. 1 and 2 become apparent. THE KLIMPEL-AUSTIN EQUATION Eq. 2 was derived by considering a set number of fracture planes occurring spatially at random within a given particle. This case will be treated here in its simplest form: a line with 1, 2, 3, etc., fractures occurring at random. This is illustrated in Fig. 1, with the original length of the line as Vo. The breakage of a long, thin, brittle fiber is a corresponding physical case, with the volume of a fragment proportional to its length. Assuming independence of the occurrence of the fractures, the probability of any one fracture occurring in length dV is dV/V0. The probability of the first fracture occurring at a length V to V + dV is dV/Vo. For the case of only one fracture per particle, formation of a number-size distribution of the left-

Many differences can be imagined between gas-oil flow in which the gas is supplied at the face of the core and gas-oil flow in which the flowing gas was originally dissolved in the oil. If capillary pressure characteristics and flow requirements control gas saturation distribution, the gas would be expected to be located at preferred sites within the porous medium as determined by pore sizes. On the other hand, during solution gas drive the gas first appears as bubbles through a nuclea-tion process. Nothing in self-nucleation theory specifies at which sites the first bubbles should be formed. In all probability they will be randomly distributed throughout the porous medium. Furthermore, it is not at all certain that even at low rates of production the gas will redistribute itself after nucleation to the channels normally occupied by gas in simple gas flow. Stewart, et at, have shown that at least for some limestone samples, oil recoveries could not be predicted for all rates of production using any one set of relative gas and oil permeabilities. An important factor in controlling recoveries during solution gas drive was the rate of bubble formation, higher rates giving higher recoveries. Stewart, et al, attributed the increase in recovery to a better distribution of the gas phase in heterogeneous limestone samples than is obtained by simple external gas drive. Differences in recovery from these causes were not reported for sandstone cores. In the experiments to be reported here, oil recovery, pressure and producing GOR history were measured during solution gas drive for a 5-ft sandstone core. The results were compared with predictions from the Muskat method for computing solution gas-drive behavior using external gas-drive relative permeability. The effects of changing the rate of production and oil viscosity were studied. At high laboratory rates of average pressure decline, two observations were made which would not have been predicted by Muskat's depletion theory: (1) oil recovery increased with increasing rate of production for a given viscosity oil, and (2) oil recovery increased with increasing oil viscosity for a given high rate of production. Both of these observations are explained as consequences of diffusion control of gas saturations superimposed on the normal gas-oil flow requirements, Fur- thermore, discontinuous gas phase flow appears to be significant during solution gas drive. The laboratory tests were performed at rates of average pressure decline many times greater than the maximum possible rate of average pressure decline in an actual oil field. It is, therefore, not possible to draw any direct conclusions regarding the effect of rate on recovery for the solution gas-drive mechanism under actual field conditions. However, at the lower laboratory rates, recoveries were nearly independent of rate and could be predicted by the Muskat method, using external gas-drive relative permeability data. These results suggest that at normal oilfield rates the effect of rate on recovery for the solution gas-drive mechanism is negligible. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The core material for the pressure depletion studies was Bandera sandstone from an outcrop in the Mid-Continent. This sandstone was selected because of its low permeability (about 10 md), which would permit the development of substantial pressure gradients in the corn at moderate flow rates. The core was 5-ft long and 2-in. in diameter. Its properties are listed in Table 1. Relative gas-to-oil permeability ratios were measured by an external gas-drive method2. The results are shown for a short 2-in. core and for the 5-ft core in Fig. 8. Oils used in the pressure depletion experiments were kerosene and a highly refined white oil (standard white oil No. 3) with gas-free viscosities of 1.8 and 25 cp, respectively. The gas was a naturally occurring methane from Gough field, Inglewood, Calif. The oil viscosities, gas solubilities and formation volume factors are plotted as functions of pressure at 75°F in Figs. 1 and 2. Methane viscosities and compressibilities were obtained from the literature"'. A core mounting was required which could withstand up to 2,500 psi internal pressure. This was obtained by first encasing the core completely in a plastic resin (Scotch Cast, manufactured by Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co.) PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by E. R. PALOWITCH and A. W. DEURBROUK INTRODUCTION During 1965, 64.9 percent of the 512 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite produced was cleaned mechanically, of which 95 million tons was cleaned by dense medium processes.l The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes rose from 7.0 to 28.5 percent from 1938 to 1965. Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes which clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes : 1. Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of the feed in the range of e 0.1 specific gravity units. 2. Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled with ±0.005 specific gravity units. 3. Ability to handle a wide range of sizes (up to 14 inches). 4. Relatively low capital and operating costs when considered in terms of high capacity and small space requirements. 5. Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. 6. Ability to handle fluctuations in feed both in terms of quantity and quality. HISTORY Sir Henry Bessemer patented the first dense medium process in 1858. Solutions of the chlorides of iron, manganese, barium and calcium were proposed as separating liquids; the separation was made in a cone-shaped separator. In the author's previous paper an attempt was made to analyze in detail the gravitational effects arising from certain subterranean anomalies of simple form, and extending to infinity in three directions. As a result of this critical examination, certain features—which were considered to be characteristic of the anomalies under investigation—were disclosed, a close observance of which enables a complete interpretation to be reached. The most simple case was first considered; viz., that of a heavy horizontal plate, bounded above and below by horizontal planes, and extending to infinity on one side of a vertical plane containing the y axis, in the three directions + y, —y, and +x. After this, the investigation was extended to the case of a similar infinite horizontal block having an inclined face. In each case the form and behavior of the gradient curve and the curve of differential curvature were analyzed, and entirely distinct interpretations were put forward, based upon (1) the gradient, (2) the differential curvature and (3) a comparison of these two quantities. In continuation of the previous work, and as a preliminary to further analysis of more complex structures, certain factors will now be examined which characterize (1) the simple infinite vertical block and (2) an infinite block which is inclined to the vertical, formations which are of considerable practical interest, being typical of important. geological structures—intru-sive dikes, lodes, veins, etc.—and because, even though in nature these may be irregular, valuable guides to a more complete interpretation are obtained by assuming, as a first approximation, that they have the simple characteristics to be studied hereafter. In the previous paper certain preliminary assumptions were made in order to render the resulting deductions universally applicable and entirely independent of the particular scale employed. This paper outlines the geophysical investigation of the area covering the D arrow salt dome, Louisiana. Surveys with the refraction seismograph and torsion balance failed to disclose the dome, but reflection dip shooting was successful and was confirmed by later drilling. Introduction The D arrow salt dome and oil field lies in western Ascension Parish, Louisiana, on the outside of a sharp bend and on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The dome occurs about 30 miles south of Baton Rouge and 80 miles northwest of New Orleans. Its geology, shape and structure have been ably described in detail by Carroll E. Cook' and, except for the general features, will not be repeated here. The purpose of this paper is to record some of the interesting and pertinent geophysical data contributing to the discovery of the dome and eventually the oil field. The salt dome is circular in outliie and comes to within about 4625 it. of the surface. At this depth the diameter of the salt plug is approximately 4800 it. The dome has only a thin cap rock of less than 75 ft. Some oil has been found and is being produced in Miocene sands above the cap rock, but most of the field's production comes from a narrow ring of wells around the east and south flanks of the dome. Producing horizons on the flank are found at 5670 to 5840 ft. in the Miocene and 6890 to 6985 ft., 7028 to 7060 ft. and 8260 to 8270 ft. in the Oligocene. The deepest well that has been drilled is the Humble Oil and Refining Company's Community B-5, on the south flank of the structure, which reached a depth of 10,013 feet. The size and shape of the field and the area of production are indicated on Fig. I. The lie showing the area of production encloses all wells now producing and all abandoned producers, both on the top and flank of the dome. This line of production is shown on all subsequent geophysical maps as a direct means of comparing the early geophysics to later drilling development. Darrow dome occurs on the low, flat flood plain of the Mississippi River; it is protected from flood overflow by high artificial levees. The rich loamy soil supports a high degree of cultivation, principally sugar cane. Drainage is secured by many small canals and the water table of the area is at or near the surface. These particular conditions of topography, drainage and top soil greatly influenced the early geophysical picture, and the influence was always unfavorable.

WITHIN the past few years, considerable development has been made in the coal-mining industry in Illinois and Indiana and it is the purpose of the authors to record its most important phases. Perhaps the two most striking features are the entry into the producing fields of certain large consumers of coal and the magnitude of some of the new operations. Mines are now being equipped by the. Chicago & Northwestern R. R., the Chicago,. Burlington & Quincy R. R., the Standard Oil Co., of Indiana, and the Union Electric Light & Power Co. of St. Louis. Besides, the U. S. Steel Corpn. has increased its coal-mining activities by commencing operations on its large holdings northeast of Benton, Franklin Co., Ill. Until recent years, the supply of coal has commonly been adequate and prices have generally been favorable, especially to large consumers, as the magnitude of their purchases enabled them to obtain satisfactory quotations from producers. In fact, most consumers of coal have believed that they could buy their fuel more satisfactorily in the open market than they could produce it themselves. The entry of the United States into the war was accompanied by various disarrangements of industrial conditions, and a demand for coal in excess of the supply seemed likely to be experienced for an indefinite period. Under these circumstances it seemed that the greatest assurance of a supply of fuel was its production by the operation of mines. In the case of the Chicago & Northwestern R. R. and the U. S. Steel Corpn. the production of coal has been carried on for many years with satisfactory results, but the C. B. & Q. R. R., the Union Electric Light & Power Co. and the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana had not been producers of coal, at least in this district. Apparently the most impressive feature of the newest mines is their capacity, for in some cases it is planned that production shall be in the neighborhood of 1000 tons per hr. The definition of precipitation-hardening1 is well understood and its principles have been subjected to study for some time. However, the variation of properties with double aging, combined with strain-hardening, gives promise of new and useful phenomena. Properly to understand these distinctions, definitions of these terms are necessary. Precipitation-hardening1.—This reaction usually depends upon an alloy having such a composition that it consists only, or in major part, of but one phase, a solid solution, at a high temperature, so that, upon slow cooling, this solution breaks down into two phases, the solid solution and a compound. By heating the alloy to the temperature for maximum solution of the compound, quenching, and reheating to a suitable lower temperature for critical dispersion precipitation of the compound, useful properties of the alloy may be developed to a maximum. Double Aging.—Dougle aging in part is similar to the process for precipitation-hardening, consisting of heating a precipitation-hardening alloy to the solution temperature, quenching, reheating to the suitable dispersion precipitation temperature, strain-hardening, and again reheating to a suitable temperature to develop certain useful properties to a maximum. The strain-hardening may be induced by two methods: (I) a rate of cooling from the first reheat may suffice to strain the solid solution lattice of the alloy; or (2) the alloy may be cold-worked to a suitable degree between the two reheats. Pkecipitation-hardening of Copper-cobalt-beryllium Alloys1.2 The composition of principal interest is that of 2.6 per cent Co, 0.4 per cent Be, 97 per cent Cu. The alloy has been developed commercially and, with certain reasonable precautions, ordinary brass-foundry practice suffices to produce an alloy of high quality. AFTER all, mineral sanctions are not a measure of peace, they are a measure of war, and we must regard them as such. We have had two examples now in the world-first, Italy, and secondly, Japan-where we have applied sanctions. When we got ready to apply sanctions to Italy that would hurt, they went to war. In the Far East, when we applied sanctions against Japan, in the latter part of 1941, there was a quick reaction, and the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

SUMMARY FOLLOWING the discovery of Parke and Ham that deoxidation control of cast molybdenum can be predicated upon simple fractographic examination, a special study of that metal was undertaken to investigate those patterns ascribed to forgeability and nonforgeability. An elaborately developed system of cleavage patterns immediately rewarded the study; and they are reported here as a necessarily preliminary contribution calling attention to information which is both new in type and in origin. In general, the present observations confirm those of Parke and Ham, and Woodside; but they also disclose a wealth of detail and correlated phenomena which greatly expand the earlier information. For example, the oxide pattern of nonforgeability is found to be complex, perhaps involving as many as three distinctive patterns. And the nature of the carbide seems to be at least twofold. In addition, transgranular facets are here shown for the first time. Elaborately complex, but in a characteristic manner, these facets depict distortion in original crystal growth which provides truly extraordinary patterns. No carbide and oxide forms display themselves transgranularly, except in profile as exceedingly thin superficial films at the grain boundaries. Crystallographic features are also rare-a condition undoubtedly resulting from the great substructural distortion; but occasionally registrations are found of cleavage on {001}, and faulted areas believed to be Neumann-type deformation on {112}. INTRODUCTION Parke and Ham, 1 and again Woodside, 2 have reported that the forgeability of molybdenum cast by their vacuum-electric-arc process can be predicted with great dependability by a simple fractographic observation. They state that nonforgeability is the result of a grain boundary oxide which can be readily identified on the fracture facet at high magnification; and they convert the nonforgeable condition to a forgeable one by increasing the carbon content of the melt until the oxide structures subsequently observed in the fractograph become replaced by a second strongly marked pattern characteristic of carbide and coincidentally indicative of forgeability. Considerable importance immediately attaches to such observations: (I) because of their direct commercial application to one of metallurgy's inviting and relatively unexplored metals; (2) because of a general scientific curiosity regarding the nature of these characteristic markings; and (3) perhaps more important, because of

Although prediction of failure of rocks may be ultimately possible without knowing in detail how failure occurs, understanding of this process is certainly of fundamental interest in rock mechanics. Of the various failure mechanisms, probably brittle fracture is of greatest interest. Recent reviews have brought this subject nearly up to date (Hock,1 Price,2 and Jaeger 3) and here, we summarize certain recent developments. As our understanding of brittle fracture is derived almost solely from laboratory studies this will amount to a review of certain laboratory experiments. New studies in four areas are pertinent; these concern 1) the volume changes which accompany brittle fracture, 2) the propagation of cracks in compression, 3) certain frictional characteristics of rocks and minerals at high pressure, and 4) the law of effective stress for crystalline rocks. Our objective here is less to present an entirely consistent, complete picture of how a rock fractures than it is to emphasize gaps in our understanding and, thus, suggest areas that need further study. Progress is still painfully slow in this field and perhaps this approach will stimulate new work. OBSERVATIONS Although the behavior of large rock masses is most often the concern in rock mechanics, the number of large-scale experimental tests is still vanishingly small. Our experimental observations arc, by and large, still made on small, relatively flaw-free, rock samples. Here also we report the behavior of small samples.

A computer model was developed to calculate the fragmentation cost for in situ leaching operations as a function of the blast design and deposit parameters. The model is based on blasting an ore zone only or an ore zone plus overburden by either a coyote blast or a vertical blasthole system. The model calculates the blast design parameters and the fragmentation cost based either on a user input powder factor value or on a powder factor calculated by the model as a function of the overburden height and the ore zone thickness. Examples of blast design parameters calculated by the model are the number and spacing of blastholes for a vertical blasthole system and the number and spacing of crosscuts for a coyote system. The model also calculates the total amount of explosives, the detonating cord length, and the number of primers. The cost of blasthole drilling can be calculated by the model based either on purchasing and operating a drill or on a user input value of the contracted cost of drilling. Application of the model to an example ore deposit showed that the vertical blasthole systems were more economical than the coyote system when there was no overburden and the deposit had an average ore thickness less than 45 meters. With no overburden and ore thickness greater than 45 meters, the vertical blasthole system was either more or less expensive than the coyote system depending on the number of levels used in the coyote system. With overburden, the coyote system was less expensive than the vertical blasthole system for blasting either the ore only or the ore plus the overburden. A coyote blast will usually produce larger particle sizes than a vertical blasthole system. Larger particle sizes can result in lower copper recoveries so that a less expensive coyote blast may not improve the overall economics of an in situ leaching operation. Blasting the ore zone only was generally less expensive than blasting the ore plus the overburden by either blasting system. Also, for the example considered, the coyote system costs were less sensitive to changes in overburden thickness and powder factor while the vertical blasthole system costs were less sensitive to changes in ore thickness.
