FOR two days preceding the Colorado Mining Association annual meeting, officers representing all interests of the lead and zinc producers hammered away at remedies for the ills of the industry behind closed doors at the University Club in Denver. For once in the stormy history of the industry, large and small producers alike came to agreement with an automatic sliding scale stabilization import tax. The proposal set forth in full on the following page, is not new being merely an amplification of the tariff arrangement whereby tariffs are imposed when the price drops below ceiling. Its advocates claim that it is simple, automatic, and flexible. It will give stability to the industry without subsidies and since no government bureaus will be required to administer it, there will be no cost to the taxpayer.

THE annual fall meeting of the Institute of Metals and the Iron and Steel divisions, in conjunction with the American .Society for Steel Treating and the Metal Congress and Show, at Boston was from many standpoints the most successful we have had to date. While many faces were missing from the various gatherings, the Institute registration reached the high mark of 324 members and guests. Cooperating with the Steel Treaters were also the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Welding Society. ,The meeting was, as usual, a three-ring circus with technical sessions 'galore, plant .trips, visits to the Exposition, social events such as lunch- eons and dinners as well as entertainment for the ladies present.

Calcium ferrite melts were equilibrated with sulfur and oxygen-bearing gases at temperatures within the range 1290°C to 1620°C. The results show that at oxygen partial pressures below 10-4 atm the sulfide-reaction occurs and at higher oxygen pressures the sulfur dissolves in the melt principally as sulfate ion. It is also observed that when the product increases, sulfate ions are converted to pyrosulfate ions and the results permit the evaluation of the pyrosulfate/sulfate ratio. It is shown that the ratio y CaSO,/rCaO increases with decreasing concentration of calcium oxide in calcium ferrite, silicate and aluminate melts. Indications are that oxy-acids, e.g. silica, alumina and ferric oxide, increase yCaS0,. A few experiments were carried out within the sul-tide range and the results are in accord with those obtained by other investigators on aluminate and silicate melts. BECAUSE of the industrial importance and theoretical interest, many investigators have studied the reactions between molten oxides, silicates or alumi-nates, and gases containing oxygen and sulfur. The early work reviewed by Schenckl and studies made by Bardenheuer and Geller2 indicates that solution of gaseous sulfur in an oxide melt resulted in the replacement of the oxide ions by the sulfide ions. Measurements made by Grant and Chipman3 on the equilibrium partition of sulfur between molten iron and complex silicate melts also demonstrated that, for a given temperature and silicate composition, the distribution of sulfur between slag and metal increased with decreasing oxygen content of the metal. Fincham and Richardson4 studied the effects of temperature and partial pressures of sulfur and oxygen on the solubility of sulfur in simple silicate and alumino-silicate melts. They observed that at oxygen partial pressures below about 10-5 atm sulfur in the gas dissolved in the melt as sulfide ions, replacing an equal number of oxide ions of the melt. At oxygen partial pressures higher than 10-3 atm, sulfur entered the melt as sulfate ions. Similar studies were made by St. Pierre and Chipman5 using calcium ferrite and calcium silico-ferrite melts. The experimental data presented in this paper were obtained in this Laboratory about 10 years ago; this is the first formal presentation although a preliminary report was given previously.6 In each of these experiments, a pure synthetic CaO-Fe2O3 melt in a platinum crucible was equilibrated with a gas mixture (SO2-O2, SO,-air, SO2-CO, or SO2-CO2-CO) at a temperature ranging from 1296°to 1620°C. The experimental technique was essentially the same as that reported by Darken and Gurry,7 the main difference being that the atmosphere in the reaction chamber contained sulfur dioxide together with oxygen, or carbon dioxide-carbon monoxide

(written discussion?).-To many members of the Institute, papers like this one by Prof. Jeffries, and that on "Reversal of Inheritance" by Prof. Howe, may seem highly academic. Aside from their direct application to all heat-treating processes, to my mind, the establishment of a physical fact and the correlation of facts into a definite law are in themselves ample justification for immense effort. A law, once established, cannot be ignored by those who carry the work along to practical ends. In studying both papers, it seems to me that each author is more concerned with defending a theory than with explaining the individual results as published by various investigators. Take, for example, my sample of pressed electrolytic iron, frequently referred to by both. Prof. Howe, defending inheritance, says that the grains on the second (1300° C.) heating inherited their size from the mother austenite. Prof. Jeffries, defending reversed inheritance, elabor-.

D. R. Grantham (Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, London, England)—This paper is a very valuable contribution to our knowledge of ilmenite and its alteration products. Two aspects are not treated in the paper and further information would be valuable. How far are the alteration processes described influenced by the original composition of the ilmenite? The word gangue is used but it is not clear whether this refers to other chemical constituents in the ilmenite, e.g., magnesia, or to other minerals loose or in composite grains. Has the work described been related to specific gravities? Pure ilmenite is stated to have a specific gravity of 4.79. Some varieties range up to over 5.0, while high magnesic varieties have a specific gravity ranging to below 4.2. Alteration to hematite might lower the specific gravity and a porous texture due to the removal of iron and the formation of rutile might also lower it. As specific gravity is a quick method which often gives an approximate indication of composition, data on the above would be valuable. L. E. Lynd (authors' reply)—Because of the way in which beach sand deposits were formed, it is impossible to tell exactly what the original composition of the parent ilmenites might have been. Information on the influence of original composition on the alteration processes must be derived from other sources, perhaps by comparing the alteration products formed from ilmenite in place in a variety of rock deposits, where parent ilmenite and its alteration product can be recognized. No information of this type has yet been brought to our attention. The material referred to as gangue includes all constituents other than oxides of titanium and iron. Nearly all of this was present as separate grains of garnet, augite, hornblende, quartz, feldspar, spinel, or other gangue minerals. Inclusions of gangue minerals within ore grains were rare, and we believe there is little MgO (1 pct or less) or other impurity actually held in the ilmenite structure in any of the concentrates studied. No specific gravity measurements were made on the samples studied. However, the suggestion that alteration involving loss of iron would lower the specific gravity is a very reasonable one, and is in accord with the findings of Creitz and McVay (Ref. 9 of our paper) who reported two magnetic opaque fractions from Trail Ridge, Fla., to have the following specific gravities and pompositions: The specific gravity of this porous, high TiO² alteration product of ilmenite is closer to that of rutile (4.25) than to that of ilmenite. Due to the porosity, it may even be less dense than rutile, although lower in TiO² and higher in iron.

SOME nonmetallic minerals and their products, such as portland cement, common brick and hollow tile, sand, gravel, crushed rock, vitrified salt-glaze clay pipe, and the like, are a necessity in every community. They are mineral in nature but the establishment of plants for their production is usually a local and elementary problem. Yet it is probable that an economic study of the problem in every locality will show that such nonmetallic mineral commodities are not always obtained in the most economical way, or in the best quality. Other nonmetallic minerals are of such value that they may be shipped for long distances and sold in sufficient quantities to establish prosperous commercial ventures. Among these are phosphates, barium compounds, borates, nitrogen compounds, magnesium compounds, sulfur, asbestos, and potash. Success in marketing such products depends on quality, production cost, transportation, and similar conditions.

Selected characteristics of nonmetallic phases were determined in low-carbon sheet steels which had been produced by various refining; deoxidizing, and casting procedures. The results showed little influence of the refining process on the quantity, distribution, size, and character of the nonmetallic phases. The quantity of inclusions was governed by the deoxidation procedures. While the mode of casting influenced the internal structure and the pattern of inclusion distribution, it had little effect on the quantity of nonmetallics. The vast majority of inclusions were under 30 µ in diam, and there was little change in size distribution during hot and cold rolling. The composition and structure of the inclusions were expained an the basis of known equilibrium phase diagrams for the appropriate systems. Additional work is needed to explain some of the observations of this paper. HENRY Marion Howe's contributions to the metallurgical profession include his many writings, the wisdom that he imparted to his students, and the inspiration that he gave to the many scholars, teachers, and industrialists who knew him personally. It was Professor Howe's intimate colleague, Albert Sauveur,1 who, in the first Howe Memorial Lecture, could have been speaking for the metallurgist of our generation as well as his own when he wrote, "...how many of us on the point of going astray were called back to the right path by Howe's guiding torch?" More than a quarter of a century later, Francis Foley,2 one of the last in the Howe Lecture series who worked directly with the great man, delivered the ultimate tribute, "...truth, in its time is so hard to identify." While Professor Howe strove to be right, "he was content if he provoked the reader to take the next step along the path to greater knowledge." Like so many of my predecessors, I sought guidance for this lecture by referring to Professor Howe's two classic texts, Metallurgy of steel,3 and Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron: the former book interpreting the facts as he saw them near the start of his career, and the latter—published 26 years later—pointing to many fertile fields for metallurgical investigation. Those of us who harvest the fruits of Henry Marion Howe's contributions to the metallurgical profession now look with wonder at the tremendous legacy he has provided. It is rewarding to study his writings and to recognize the anticipation of such aspects of modern ferrous metallurgy as: 1) Direct reduction 2) Steelmaking reactions 3) The approaches and benefits of degassing 4) Solidification mechanisms 5) Habits and behavior of nonmetallic inclusions 6) Recrystallization phenomena 7) Slip and slip propagation 8) Dislocations 9) Discontinuous deformation 10) Microscopic and macroscopic segregation

The metals Cd, ,Wg-, Sn, TI, Zn, and Zr reach a peak hardness after a criticfir1 deformation by rolling- and then soften with fwther rolling-, thereby exhibiting wovk softening. Optical metallography on Cd, Mg, and Zn shows that work softening is accompanied by a change in grain size occurring during deformation. The creep of zinc from -1l° to +60°C at stresses in the range of 7.9 to 17.3 kg per sq mm is given by € = e0 -t- Bt + Kt +at6. The third and second rate constcints are related by the equation a = K~ K6 and their stress and temperature dependence can be represented by the equations K = A, . exp - (u, - Bu)/kT. A model based upon the stress activated glide of sub-boundaries is proposed which qualitatively accounts for the metallog-raphic observations. Expressions, which are in reasonable quantitative agreement with the ex-pe~inzental observations, are derived for the creep of zinc. THE term "work softening" has been used previously by Polakowski1 and by Cottrell and stokes2 to describe phenomena where further strain of a deformed material leads to a decrease in flow stress. In both cases, however, the conditions were changed for the second straining. Here, the term "work softening" is intended to refer to a decrease in flow stress after continued straining in the same direction at the same temperature: work softening is the antithesis of "work hardening". Work softening of zinc was reported by chadwick3 and in discussion of that paper Jenkins4 indicated that cadmium also work softens. More recently work softening has been reported5 in two magnesium alloys, -99.5 pct Mg. Chadwick found that the hardness, 0.2 pct Proof Stress and the UTS of electrolytic zinc all increased with progressive cold reductions up to 30 pct and then progressively decreased with further rolling. Gay and Kelly6 used a back-reflection X-ray technique to study the effect of cold rolling zinc and found that although deformations greater than 2 to 5 pct reduction in thickness produced some recrystallized grains, deformations greater than 40 pct caused com-plete spontaneous recrystallization. At deformations greater than 60 pct the material was found to consist solely of recrystallized grains, -20 pm diam, the size of which decreased with increasing reduction and was much less than the initial grain size of the annealed material (-300 pm diam). Similar results were also reported for cadmium, tin, and lead.6 Gay, Hirsch, and Kelly' suggest that these experiments indicate recrys-tallization takes place when the dislocation density exceeds a certain value. However, no measurements of MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The purity of the metals used in this work is indicated by the following figures: Zn (99.99); Cd (99.94); Mg (99.95); T1 (99.99). The zirconium was iodide crys tal bar with a probable purity of about 98 pct. The metals were obtained in the form of 0.25 in. thick strip or 0.425 in. diam rod by various fabrication methods and then annealed to ensure complete re-crystallization. Hardness-deformation curves were obtained at room temperature by rolling 4 in. thick strip under conditions which left a surface adequate for diamond pyramid hardness tests immediately after rolling. The hardness was taken as the niean of five impressions made using a 5 kg load and the time elapsing between rolling and making the last impression never exceeded 5 min. The zinc specimens for creep testing were from 3 by 3 by 4 in. cast slabs which were rolled to 0.10 in. thickness starting at 350°C and finishing cold. The resulting strip was cut into pieces 1 in. wide and annealed in batches. With suitable choices of annealing temperature between 100" arid 400°C five different grain sizes varying from 4.54 x 10' to 3.03 x l05 grains per sq cm (530 to 20 um diam) were obtained. Creep tests were done in compression using a sub-press, based on a design after Ford,8 in which the strip is compressed between dies 0.100 in. wide under conditions of plane strain. Since there is no lateral spread of the material, the area of contact between the dies and strip remains constant throughout the test and the application of a constant load, using the load maintaining device of a hydraulic testing machine, resulted in a constant stress. Covering the dies with strips of P.T.F.E. reduced frictional effects to a minimum. The creep strain was obtained by measuring the travel of the crosshead of the testing machine to a sensitivity of 0.1 pct reduction in thickness. The complete subpress assembly was contained in a steel box and for tests above the ambient this was filled with liquid paraffin and heated electrically. Temperatures below the ambient were obtained with a cooling mixture of acetone and solid carbon dioxide in the box. The liquids were stirred and the temperature of the specimen, which was controlled to ±0.5"C dur-ing a test, was measured by a thermocouple placed near the dies. Compression testing of cylindrical specimens was also carried out in the subpress using hardened flat discs separated from the test material by P.T.F.E. sheets which obviated barrelling of the specimens. CHROMIUM is but one hundred and thirty years of age-a mere youngster as related to many metals that' have speeded world progress. It was Vauquelin of France who proved conclusively that the so called red lead of. Siberia contained a new element. The variety and characteristic colors of the compounds suggested the name chromium. He also succeeded in reducing oxide of chromium to the metallic form and described the product as very brittle, infusible, needle- like crystals on which acids had very feeble action. His metal was not pure chromium, of course; it must have contained appreciable carbon in the combined form as a result of reducing the oxide by carbon at high temperatures. Vauquelin's description in 1798 of this work is a gem-indeed, literally, he went so far as to discover the presence of chromium oxide in the emerald. The metallic product did not seem to interest Vauquelin greatly, but a new chemical industry began shortly after his discoveries.

You have chosen to be mining engineers. The principal importance of your engineering education to date has been in teaching you how to think and how through books to have ready access to the accumulated experience of previous generations, as well as the current experience of the day. You should by now have acquired something of the engineering point of view, the open skeptical mind. the power to observe, experiment, and draw conclusions, form theories and test these by further experiment, and weigh the inherent probability of conclusions drawn by others. I am asking you today to consider certain facts and the conclusions I am drawing from those facts.

Since the commercial acceptance of the liquid ion exchange process in the mineral processing industry, it has been predicted that eventually the hydrometallurgist would have a wide selection of commercially available chemical reagents to make separations efficiently and economically of virtually all metals in solution under a wide range of conditions. Several years ago, General Mills began a research and development program to determine if it were possible to develop a reagent to extract a specific metallic ion from solution at a cost that would allow large scale commercial application. A giant step toward reaching this objective was announced in late 1963, when development quantities of LIX®-63 reagent, a highly selective reagent for the extraction of copper, were first offered to industry. The properties of this reagent were de- scribed in a previous paper.1

Located some 180 miles east of Los Angeles in Riverside County, California, the Eagle Mountain mine supplies iron ore concentrates for the Kaiser Steel Corporation steel plant in Fontana, California, and for export to Japan. Although the deposits were first discovered in the early 1890's, no production was realized from the area until 1948 when Kaiser Steel Corporation commenced operations. A part of the large Basin and Range province, the Eagle Mountain area's geologic column comprises a thick series of metasediments resting on Precambrian gneisses and schists that have been intruded by sill-like masses of porphyritic quartz monzonite. The metasediments are composed of three quartzite units that are separated by a schistose meta-arkose and by two ore zones. They have been folded into a large east-west trending anticlinal structure that extends completely across the Eagle Mountains. The iron ore deposits occur in two well-defined horizons in the metasedimentary series, and they are found only along the north limb of the major anticline. Host rocks for the ore zones were a series of limestones and dolomites with associated quartzites. Magnetite plus pyrite comprised the primary mineralization that formed many replacement lenses and stringers of ore within the ore zones. The primary ore has been oxidized to hematite and goethite in a broad zone at higher elevations in the deposits. Hydrothermal alteration formed actinolite- tremolite granofels, local phlogopite, and minor tourmaline in the ore zones. This alteration and the ore deposition seem related to the same magmatic event that formed the porphyritic quartz monzonite intrusion

(communication to the Secretary*):—For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting to the Institute my results in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mine-explosions are more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more inclined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what otherwise probably would have been small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during summer and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas coal-region, in McDowell county,w.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

A simple zone melting technique for investigating the effect of ultrasonic irradiation upon ingot solidification is described. The effect of i) ultrasonic power level, ii) freezing velocity, iii) constant or variable frequency, iv) direction of irradiation, and v) transducer-cozlpling bar joint upon the grain size of type 316 stainless steel have been investigated. The results of this study support the postulate that the ultrasonic vibrations increase the nucleation probability in the layer of liquid adjacent to the freezing interface. In the first paper of this series,l the possible mechanisms whereby ingot structure may be altered by irradiating a solidifying melt with ultrasonic vibrations have been discussed. A new technique for efficiently introducing the ultrasonic energy into the solid-liquid interface region was presented and applied to ingot preparation by the consumable-electrode arc-melting technique. The experimental results support the postulate that the ultrasonic vibrations may refine the ingot structure by increasing the nucleation probability in the zone of liquid adjacent to the solid-liquid interface. The present paper describes the application of the same technique to a relatively simple laboratory-scale zone-melting apparatus. This apparatus is found to be well suited to the detailed study of ultrasonic technology in this area and allows one to determine, in particular, the minimum ultrasonic power level needed to produce a certain grain size in a particular material. The results of this study support the nucleation mechanism for grain refinement, but do not provide any deeper insight into the specific nucleation mechanism responsible for the effect. EXPERIMENT The apparatus used in these experiments is shown in Fig. 1 and illustrated schematically in Fig. 2. The material to be studied, type 316 stainless steel, was in the form of a 3/4-in. sq bar 30 in. long. This bar was placed in a square open-topped mold with open ends made from high-purity graphite coated with a flame-sprayed Al2O3, skin. Surrounding the crucible was a molybdenum susceptor with 3/8-in. diam holes spaced at 1-in. intervals along its length to serve as sight ports. A tapered transducer horn was brazed to one end of the specimen. The entire assemblage was enclosed in a quartz tube, the transducer itself projecting out one end and resting in a cooling tank. A vacuum seal between the coupling bar and the end plate enclosed one end. A similar plate and seal enclosed the other end. The system is gas tight and can be operated under vacuum or an inert atmosphere. For these experiments, flowing argon at 15 in. of Hg pressure was used. The heat source for melting the stainless steel specimen was a 2-in. long 3-kc induction coil placed around the quartz tube; this source heated the susceptor, inductively melting about a 3-in. zone of the sample by radiation. To move the molten zone at a specified rate, the induction coil was moved down the tube at this rate with the aid of a simple pulling device. Thus, the sample could be irradiated at varying ultrasonic frequencies and power levels and could be solidified at varying rates. The power input to the transducer was measured using a "John Fluke Model 120 VAW-Meter." 1 The power delivered to the interface region is probably only about 50 pct of that measured on the VAW-meter. A standard technique for heat treating small metallurgical samples where no appreciable contamination from the atmosphere can be tolerated is that of sealing small samples in evacuated fused-silica tubes. Since vitreous silica is relatively impervious to diffusion of gases, even at temperatures approaching the devitrification range, around 1100°C, this simple procedure has been very widely adopted as a standard technique in metallurgical research. Many workers have recognized that, with metals of fairly high reactivity, insulation from direct contact with the SiOz envelope is desirable in order to avoid displacement reactions of the type M + SOz-- MOz + Si(in M). WE as employees of these related companies, I am sure, are proud to be affiliated with them, and have great faith in the sagacity and fore- sightedness of our employers. Most of us here have been called into important positions in these organizations, and it should be our most earnest endeavor to sense and carry them out as if they were our very own. We have been asked to supervise and carry on a work over which our employers cannot personally watch. It has been well said that the most efficient organization is that which requires the least attention from its head. Because of the very nature and condition of our work, which separates us by many miles from our employers and makes it impossible for us to receive attention and instructions from the heads of our departments, save for occasional visits and correspondence, we are given a great opportunity to prove that we can be efficient workers without too much attention from the heads of our departments. There are few employees who cannot do their duty when it is laid before them in specific terms, and when their employers are always there to see that their plans are carried out. But the employee who is really giving efficient service sees his duty himself and willingly does it. '

PETROLEUM industry forecasts are constantly made and revised but are not in the nature of predictions. Particularly in the field of demand, many of the factors are far beyond control by the producing industry. Supply reacts on demand and demand reacts on supply. Competent economists in the oil business forecasted a year ago, on the basis of experience, that demand would now be at a much lower level than it is. This increased demand increased the price of crude oil and products, and in turn those increased prices have brought forth increased supply. A reduction in demand would lead to a reduction in supply. Shortages are now world-wide, and costs of secondary importance, so if there were extra supplies in California they would be moved into what are termed "unnatural markets." For example, Argentina is in the market today for California gasoline; that is an unnatural market because of the greater transportation distances from California to Argentina than from normal sources.
