Harmon E. Keyes (Chemical & Metallurgical Engineer, Eagar, Ariz.)-Chemical dissolution of chalcocite by acidic ferric sulfate is well known. Resulting elemental sulfur may be oxidized to sulfuric acid by heated ferric sulfate. Laboratory tests at Southwest Experiment Station, USBM, Tucson, generally confirmed stoichiometric relations of 1 part Cu dissolved to 1.750 parts ferric iron reduced, using CP chemicals, dried ore samples, and apparatus cleaned with potable water. Recirculation with open-drainage percolation to increase copper in leaching solvent was followed successfully when appropriate, both in laboratory and Pinto Valley pilot tests. Before 1924 attempts to produce ferric sulfate by aerating ferrous sulfate solution were known. Initial oxidation was satisfactory, but rate slowed below practicality as oxidation progressed and acidity increased. Also, due to hydrolysis of ferric sulfate, a ferric precipitate of hydroxide and basic sulfate resulted. Both laboratory and pilot plant tests gave similar results, regardless of whether CP ferrous sulfate or scrap iron cementation discard solution was used. Rapid oxidation of ferrous hydroxide by air alone is well known to analytical chemists. Simple, specific rules for achieving slope stability in open-pit mines are impossible to devise. Each pit has a different mining program and a different set of environmental conditions, and its final slope design must be based on an individual evaluation of the actual site. The overall philosophy of pit stability, however, is tending towards a limit design concept. Since slope angle has a great influence on the economics of most open-pit mines, efforts are being made to reduce the theoretical factor of safety for slope stability to very near 1.0. (Factor of safety is here defined as shear strength/shear stress on the most probable plane of failure.) Actually, where detailed, statistically significant testing has been done and a comprehensive ground control program is being instituted to warn of movement at an early stage, safety factors as low as 1.1 or 1.2 may be justified. The cost of the necessary procedures, however, is high. There are many factors that influence stability, but this article will be confined to three-rock structure, groundwater, and blasting.

THE recently discovered occurrence of diamonds near Murfreesboro, Pike county, Ark., was brought to. our attention by Mr. Samuel W. Reyburn (Trustee for Messrs. C. S. Stifft, A. D. Cohn, August Zinsser, Jr., and himself, owners of the property), through whose courtesy we investigated the locality of the deposit. Prospecting with the diamond-drill is now in active progress ; but mining operations on a large scale have not yet been ordered. Geology.-The geology as well as the petrography of this interesting locality has been well described by Messrs. J. C. Branner and R. N. Brackett.1 Briefly summarized, the igneous rock in which the diamonds are found is a vitreous peridotite, forming a stock or volcanic neck, which has broken up through the Carboniferous and Cretaceous quartzites and sandstones. After an extensive period of erosion, during which an unknown portion of the neck and presumably a previously existent volcanic cone have been removed, the surface was covered with thin beds of Post-Tertiary conglomerate. The volcanic intrusion was accompanied by the formation of several small dikes of a rock much like that of the main body. One of these dikes cuts across the stock, while another cuts the Cretaceous sandstone, but is overlain by the conglomerate, thus giving a datum for the period of intrusion. So far as known, there was little, if any, metamorphism of the country-rock by the igneous magna, which probably followed an approximately vertical course, so that a more or less vertical extension downward of the igneous body to indefinite depths may be expected.

The oil embargo and increasing disillusionment with nu- clear power have put this country's abundant coal reserves in growing demand. Both the government and industry are looking toward increased coal mining, and with this goes an increased interest in new and advanced methods of coal utilization. One advanced coal system stands out among the rest-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Its high efficiency, strong probability of sulfur dioxide control, and limited consumption of cooling water place MHD in a unique position to help the power generation industry. Another point in MHD's favor is the capital costs of operation, which are lower than those of other advanced technologies. However, initial costs are higher and realization of a commercial MHD plant in this country may be more than a decade away.

Numerous determinations1-' of the texture of cold-rolled polycrystalline iron, steel, and ferritic alloys have been made with good agreement among the various observers as to the principal features of the texture common to all, but there has been no adequate explanation of the texture in terms of, the behavior of individual grains. This study presents an explanation of the texture based on the observed rotation of single crystals when deformed in a manner similar to a grain in the aggregate, a method we have found useful in leading to a better understanding of compression and tension textures;8,9,10 in particular, the aim has been to determine experimentally the end orientations of rolled single crystals of iron. These are discussed in connection with the point of view of Weverl and of Boas and Schmid2 that the rolling texture is a simple compression texture (compression normal to the rolling plane) superimposed on a simple tension texture (tension in the rolling direction), and the point of view of Kurdjumow and Sachs3 that three ideal end orientations exist. Experimental Method The single crystals used were in the form of disks cut from a stock of crystalst pre- pared in this laboratory by a strain-anneal method from mild steel decarburized and purified in hydrogen, the details of which have been described elsewhere.11 To ensure maximum elongation in the rolling direction and to simulate approximately the rolling of a grain in an aggregate, lateral flow was constrained by placing each crystal in a close-fitting hole in a plate of copper or iron of equal thickness and rolling the plate and crystal together. About one-third of the crystals were rolled in a "sandwich" pack by adding top and bottom cover plates. The two-high mill used had 8-in. diameter rolls and was operated at 15 r.p.m. The initial diameter of the crystals was between 1/4 and 1/2 in., while the starting thickness varied from 0.031 to 0.376 in. With a single exception, which was rolled 63 per cent, the crystals were rolled to a final reduction in thickness of 82 to 97 per cent in 20 to 40 passes, alternately changing the sense of the rolling direction. The initial orientations of the crystals were determined either by X-ray back reflection12 or by optical reflectionl3 from etch pits; the mean final orientations were determined by X-ray Laue photograms using molybdenum, silver, or tungsten radiations, by optical reflection, and in many cases by both methods. THE annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary to the A.I. M.E. is always held in New York, in con- junction with the annual meeting of the Institute in February. Business sessions, teas, dances, a theater party, luncheons, excursions, and many other interesting activities filled the four days to overflowing. In all ,216 women were present, from all parts of the United ,/ mates, and there were several from Canada. On Mon- ' day not only the visitors, but the New York members also, gathered around the registration desks, where Mrs. E. N. Wolfes, Mrs. S. J. Jennings, and Miss Georgene Davis saw that everyone was properly registered and provided with tickets to whatever functions she desired to attend. Greetings were eagerly ex- changed as friends met at the luncheon on the fifth floor, where the hostesses of the day were Mrs. J. D. Handy, Mrs. T. T. Read, Mrs. Sidney Rolle and Mrs. H. J. Wolf. In the afternoon, there were visits to art galleries and other interesting exhibits, arranged by Mrs. Frederick Laist. Mrs. W. H. Bassett was the hostess at a very delightful Thé damant at the Italian Gardens of the Ambassador Hotel. Many of the men attended this function also. In the evening the visiting ladies were entertained at a theater party, with Mrs. Wilbur Judson as hostess. The play that was seen was Gorki's "At. the Bottom."

This paper discusses the design and calibration of a Faraday pail for measuring electric charge. The paper also shows that at least for two minerals, quartz and calcite, the phenomenon that Johnson termed "reversibility" can be explained in terms of the contact electrification between the minerals and the metal rotor of an electrostatic machine. Each year the free world produces about 13 million tons of mineral concentrates by electrical separation. However, despite the rather general acceptance of electrical concentration as an industrial process, research in this area has lagged far behind the efforts devoted to competitive processes such as froth flotation. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and calibration of a Faraday ice pail for measuring charge density on mineral grains and to show some of its applications in the area of electrostatic and electrodynamic research. THE DESIGN AND CALIBRATION OF FARADAY PAILS FOR ABSOLUTE CHARGE MEASUREMENT The electric charge on mineral grains at a given time during an electrical concentration process is de- pendent on many factors and cannot, in general, be accurately calculated a priori. It is thus important to devise a method of measuring absolute charge. One method of measuring electric charge is to note the potential rise of an electrometer when charged particles drop into a Faraday pail. Two types of Faraday pail have been constructed and calibrated. The first type, Faraday Pail I (Fig. 1), is a vertical pail originally designed to measure the charge due to contact electrification between mineral grains and a metal rotor or due to conductive induction when mineral grains are passed over a rotating cylinder in the presence of an electric field. The second type, labeled Faraday Pail II (Fig. 2), is a horizontal pail designed to determine the charge distribution of mineral grains after they pass through the separating zone of the electrical concentrator shown in Fig. 4. The main advantage of the horizontal pail is its low head-room requirement and the long opening which enables the experimenter to sample the entire width of the stream of minerals being separated. The Faraday pails were calibrated in the following manner: A calibration head was constructed in the form of a hollow brass sphere that could be held in an insulated metal cylinder by vacuum (Fig. 1). The capacitance of the sphere was calculated by measuring the capacitance of the sphere and cylinder combined and that of the cylinder alone and subtracting the latter measurement from the former. The sphere was then charged to a known potential (V) and allowed to drop into the Faraday pail which was attached to a Keithley Model 610A electrometer. GENTLEMEN : It is my privilege to transmit herewith the reports for the calendar year 1932 of your Treasurer and the Chairmen of the following Standing Committees: Finance, Admissions, Membership, Papers and Publications, Library, and Mining and Metallurgy. To these reports you are referred for additional details of the year's activities. Finances.-Continuation of depressed conditions in the mining industry (in common with other industries) caused the income of the Institute to decline from $168,274 in 1931 to $138,331. However, economies were effected so as to reduce expenditures from $171,198 to $135,977. As a consequence the net result of the operations for the year was a-surplus of income amounting to $2,354 compared with a deficit of $2,924 in 1931. This gratifying result is accounted for in large measure by the foresight of the Finance Committee in anticipating a substantial decline in income and preparing the budget accordingly. Incidentally, the tentative budget for 1933 has been balanced at $125,000.

The relation of annealing temperature to conductivity of copper wire has been determined. Conductivity hard was 98.26 per cent. After a 10-min. heat,ing at 200" C. it was 98.69. By annealing 10 min. at 300" C. a large increase, to 100.93, occurred. Maximum conductivity, 101.15, was attained after a 500" C. anneal; thereafter it decreased to 100.53 after a 950" C. anneal. If copper is gassed the decrease is much more than this. Material and Method The work was done on high grade electrolytic copper, 99.942 per cent, copper plus silver, silver 0.0008 per cent. It was hot-rolled to 1/4 in., then cold drawn to 0.080 in. The wire was cut into 25 5-ft. lengths and numbered 1 to 25 as cut. Four samples were tested hard. The others were wound into 5-in. diameter coils. For the 100" C. heating a coil was put into water, the water brought to . boiling, and the wire kept at this temperature for 10 min. For the higher temperatures the coils were placed in envelopes of sheet copper, a little water added, and the envelopes sealed by folding over the edges twice, and hammering them together. This kept the air out very well. The envelope and wire were brought to the desired temperature; this was maintained for 10 min., then the whole was water-quenched. Results Data from the tests are shown in the table and plot (see Fig. 1); conductivity is referred to the International Annealed Copper Standard at 20" C. Conductivity hard is considerably less than conductivity soft.1 The increase is sharp when the wire anneals. The maximum, 101.15 per cent, in the particular material used, comes at 500º C.; thereafter the conductivity falls to 100.53 per cent. after 950" C. annealing, a drop of 0.62 per cent.

SOME PHRASEMAKER has aptly said that nature made aluminum light but research made it strong. Research has been a vital element in the past progress of the aluminum industry and its future growth likewise depends upon the application of the results of research. The role of aluminum products in World War II is well known and this metal will certainly be increasingly important in the postwar world. Some of the principal developments in the war years were in the field of high-strength aluminum alloys. New and stronger alloys were developed which enabled designers to get increased speed and performance in our fighter planes and bombers. The aircraft industry will continue to use these new materials for peacetime passenger and cargo airplanes. High-strength alloys will also find structural applications in trucks, buses, trains, ships, and bridges.

An analysis is presented to show that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals can be rationalized in terms of flow mechanisms operative during the rolling process. First, a general approach used by Calnan is followed, where the rolling process is approximated on the basis of two axes, p and Q. In this treatement there are two separate sets of slip systems, one for each axis, and it is shown that a homogeneous rotation can he achieved by restricting the slip systems for the two axes to share common slip directions Then, two criteria are used to select the active slip systems for the axis P: they must have relatively high resoloed shear stresses, and dislocations on these slip systems must interact attractively in order to lower total energy content Finally, a method of analysis is introduced to locate the end position of an axis by knowing its acti7.e slip systems. The result of the analysis indi- cates that two main flow mechanisms operate in fcc metals. The ideal orientation derived from one oj-them is (8 13 21) (21 8 13) which is very close to the (358) (523) orientation observed experimentally on the rolling texture of copper. This flow mechanism should only he operative in metals containing dislocations extended into partials separated by less than five times their lattice parameter. The ideal orientations derived from the other flow mechanism are a combination of (1 10} (112) and a spread of orientations with (110) parallel to the rolling plane. This type of ideal orientations corresponds to those observed in the rolling texture of silver 30:70 brass, and binary alloys with high alloying content. This flow mechanism should be operative in any fcc metal regardless of its stacking-fauIt energy. When a polycrystalline metal is subjected to a large amount of plastic deformation, it is generally observed that grain orientations alter and align themselves towards certain positions, eventually reach-

METALLURGICAL coke and the by-products of the carbonization of coal continue in strong demand. Nearly 500 new by-product ovens were constructed in 1943. Output of by-product coke in the first ten months of the year was about 2 1/2 percent higher than in the corresponding period of 1942, but beehive production remained on approximately the same level as last year and constituted about 11 per cent of the total coke output.

A simple method is described for determining the orientation of a single crystal by means of a cylindr cal X-ray camera. Orientation setting to within ±1 deg is attainable by a stereographic analysis of a single cylindrical Laue pattern produced by the originally randomly mounted crystal. Final precision adjustments which permit orientation of the crystal to within ±5 min of arc from the desired position can be made by the method of Weisz and Cole. A chart, originally Presented by Schiebold and schneider7 and which allows a direct reading of the two stereographic polar coordinates of the corresponding pole of a given Laue spot, has been recomputed to aid in the stereographic interpretation of the cylindrical Laue X-ray photograph. Detailed instructions for the use of the chart, a simple example, and a comparison with the conventional flat-film Laue Methods, are presented. 1 HE problem of determining the orientation of the unit cell of a single crystal relative to a set of fixed external reference coordinates is fundamental to most problems of X-ray crystallography and to many experimental studies of the structure-sensitive physical properties of crystalline materials. Several techniques for measuring these orientation relations have been developed which correlate optically observable, orientation-dependent physical properties to the unit cell. Examples of such procedures include the observation of cleavage faces or birefringence, as discussed by bunn,1 or the examination of preferentially formed etch-pits, as discussed by barrett.2 Each of these methods is limited, for various reasons, to an orientation accuracy of approximately ±1 deg—a serious limitation in some experimental studies. Several other limitations decrease the generality of these methods. Of these, perhaps most notable is the absence in many crystals of the physical property necessary for the orientation technique. The most widely used methods for determining crystal orientation are variations of the Laue X-ray diffraction method. Because of the indeterminacy of the X-ray wavelength diffracted to a given spot, the interpretation of Laue photographs is now limited almost exclusively to the procedure of using a chart to determine the angular coordinates of the corresponding pole for each spot. For the flat-film geometries, either a leonhardt3 or a Dunn-Martin4 chart is used in interpreting transmission patterns, whereas a greninger5 chart is used for interpreting back-reflection patterns. A less common method of interpreting flat-film transmission Laue photographs is by comparing the Laue pattern with the Majima and Togino standards,6 or with the revised standards prepared by Dunn and Martin.4 Although this last method is applicable only to crystals with cubic symmetry, it can be very rapid and just as accurate as the graphical methods. The primary limitation of all the X-ray methods mentioned is the relatively small number of Laue spots and zones which are recorded on the flat film. Often, few, if any, major poles appear, thus making interpretation tedious and sometimes uncertain. The use of a cylindrical film eliminates this problem. Schiebold and schneider7 prepared a chart by which the orientation of the specimen crystal could be determined from a cylindrical Laue photograph. However, it was only drawn in 5-deg intervals of each of the two angular variables used to identify the Laue spots, thus limiting the accuracy of orientation to about ±3 deg. An examination of this chart indicated that if it were drawn in 2-deg intervals, crystal orientations to ±1 deg would be attainable. Subsequent use of the replotted chart has confirmed this accuracy. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the redevelopment and use of this chart, and to point out its advantages and limitations. I) CAMERA GEOMETRY AND CHART CALCULATIONS The geometry of the cylindrical camera with a related reference sphere is shown in Fig. 1. The X-ray beam BB&apos; pierces the film at the back-reflection hole B, strikes the crystal at 0, and the transmitted beam leaves the camera at the transmission hole T. One of the diffracted X-rays intersects the film at a Laue spot L. The normal OP to the diffracting plane bisects the angle BOL between the incident and diffracted X-ray beams. The point P on the reference sphere can be located uniquely by the two orthogonal motions 6 and 8 on the two great circles ENWS and BPQT respectively. Because the Bragg angle 8 (= 90 - < BOP) is always less than 90 deg, P always remains in the hemisphere BENWS. Therefore, if every possible pole P is to be recorded on the same stereographic projection, it is necessary that the projection reference point be at T with the projection plane tangent to the sphere at B.* The great

GOLD and beryllium form an intermediate phase composed of the two metals in equal atomic proportions and having the formula AuBe. According to Winkler,1 this phase probably exists in two modifications: beta, stable below about 600°C, and alpha, stable between 600°C and the melting point, about 740°C. Only the low- temperature beta form will be considered in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The gold used had a fineness of 999.75 to 999.85, balance mainly silver, and the beryllium purity was better than 99.8 pct. AuBe was prepared by melting the constituents in a beryllia crucible in an evacuated induction furnace. After melting and thorough mixing, the alloy was allowed to solidify in the crucible. No difficulty was encountered in obtaining a homogeneous ingot. Both chemical analysis and microscopic examination of the ingot showed that the alloy was essentially one phase, containing 50 at. pct gold. The alloy was quite brittle and powder samples could easily be pre- pared by grinding in an agate mortar. The X-ray diffraction patterns were made with CuK-alpha radiation in a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 57.3 mm in diameter. The film was placed unsymmetrically in the camera in order to afford a basis for am-shrinkage corrections. A sample homogenized at 5o0°C gave the same diffraction pattern as a sample taken from the as-melted ingot. GENERAL RESULTS The diffraction pattern of AuBe was readily indexed on the basis of a simple cubic lattice with ao = 4.659 ± 0.001kX. If the unit cell is assumed to contain four AuBe "molecules," the calculated X-ray density is 13.46 grams per cc as compared with the measured density of 13.55 gm per cc. The only missing reflections in the dsraction pattern are (100) and (220) (see Table I). Since these missing reflections are not those characteristic of body or face centering, the lattice of AuBe must be simple cubic. To locate the positions of the atoms within the unit cell, two possibilities had to be considered: I. The structure was disordered and there were eight positions to be filled by an "average" gold-beryllium atom. That the structure was disordered seemed unlikely since the lattice parameter did not vary with composition in alloys containing some- what more and somewhat less than 50 at. pct gold, indicating a fixed composition for AuBe.

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING deals with the production, transportation, and refining of crude oil. Refining is chiefly the work of the chemical engineer; production, that of the petroleum engineer. Production engineering only is discussed in this paper. Petroleum production engineering is closest related to and, in fact, is a branch of mining engineering. Formerly, many petroleum engineers were trained as mining engineers or mining geologists. The profession is related also to mechanical and civil engineering to about the same extent that mining engineering is. Petroleum production draws upon the mechanical branch for drilling and pumping machinery and upon civil engineering for the construction of transportation lines, water supplies, and water-disposal plants. Fundamentally, petroleum production engineering deals with the removal of the oil from the reservoir rocks, just as mining is concerned with the removal of ore. The process of oil production demands a specialized knowledge just as distinct from mechanical and civil engineering as mining is distinct from operating a Diesel engine. Even though the chief tools of the petroleum engineer are the drill and the pump, these may be of little avail, and certainly not efficient, if their selection and use is not based on a knowledge of the physical chemistry of oil, the geology of the formations, the structure of the oil sand, the hydrodynamics of the reservoir, and the interrelation of all these many factors.

During the year 1945, the total number of wells drilled in Ohio, including the. non¬productive wells, was 1034. For the 10-year period ending with 1945, the average completions per year were 1125, the least number being 910 in 1938, and the maximum 1561 in 1941. The proportion of dry holes in 1945 was 37 per cent?about the same as for the year 1944 but exceeding the 10-year average, which was 34 per cent. The number of oil wells completed exceeded the number drilled in 1944 by about 30 per cent, the average initial per well being the same in both years. Gas-well completions were approximately 10 per Cent less than in 1944, with the average initial per well about 5 per cent greater. The difference in number of oil and gas wells in the two years was in Berea and Clinton completions, as the number of oil wells increased about 30 per cent, owing to greater activity in the two sands named, while the number of gas wells decreased because of fewer completions therein.
