ALTHOUGH considerable attention has been devoted to reaction mechanisms and equilibria of a number of endothermic reactions through which metals or their refractory compounds can be formed upon heated surfaces, only a comparatively small amount of work has been done to develop rate information for these systems. The interestin and very worthwhile work of Holden and Kopelman, Runnalls and Pidgeon,Dijring and Moliere, and Herrick and ICrieble4 is to be noted; however, their work was done under very specific conditions and the rate information which they have developed is not applicable to many systems which have been studied experimentally. That a more generalized approach is needed is shown by the diversity of these systems and of the experimental conditions which they require. These include the preparation of titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, co-lumbium, aluminum, and silicon by decomposition or disproportionation of their halides, in some instances through hydrogen reduction; the preparation of nickel and iron by decomposition of their car-bonyls; and the preparation of copper by decomposition of the acetylacetonate. They may be carried out at temperatures ranging from 100" to over 2000°C and at pressures of from less than one mm Hg to superatmospheric. The physical mechanism of the overall process can be broken down into several steps, any one of which may be rate-determining; and the rate associated with each of these basic physical processes can be predicted. Consequently, by proper application of the present technology of rate processes, it is possible to arrive at a rate of metal deposition in the system of interest and to reach an understanding of the influence of' each major variable upon the deposition rate. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate how this can be done and to present experimental results for a specific system for comparison with theory. The overall process of deposition of metal upon a heated surface which is immersed in vapors of a compound of the metal can be broken down into the following steps: 1) Transport of the reactant vapors to the surface. 2) Decomposition of the reactant in the immediate vicinity of the surface to a) establish chemical equilibrium if reaction rates are high; or to b) establish a dynamic equilibrium in accordance with the several reaction rates. 3) Diffusion of reaction products away from the vicinity of the surface, with or without simultaneous recombinations to form still other products. The overall process is said to be diffusion controlled if Step 1, or the equivalent Step 3, is slow; it is reaction-rate controlled if Step 2b is slow. When experimental evidence shows the reaction rate to be controlling, the well-known theories of Eyring' and others can be used as a basis for correlating and extrapolating the experimental data. Although these theories give only approximate estimates of reaction rates, they are of considerably greater value in correlating experimental data. Most deposition systems operate at surface temperatures sufficiently high that reaction rates near the surface are very high. Mass-transport rates then become controlling; and it is this regime of diffusion controlled rates which is most often of concern and Which will be considered here. When the system pressure is very low, i.e., in the micron range, then the transport processes are those of molecular movement, and the results of kinetic theory can be applied to specify a rate of arrival of reactant molecules at the heated surface. If the condensation coefficient can be estimated, then the deposition rate will be given by the product (rate of arrival) x (condensation coefficient), Conversely, experimental data can be used to determine a condensation coefficient, as was done by Holden and Kopelman' for the decomposition of zirconium tetraiodide upon a heated molybdenum surface, who found the coefficient for zirconium on molybdenum to be 1.0 at temperatures of 1382°C and above. In this pressure range, the geometry of the system. and in particular the distance between the source of reactant molecules and the heated surface, can exert a considerable effect upon the deposition rate;

THE Kinta valley in the State of Perak, one of the largest of the Federated Malay States, is probably at the present time the richest alluvial tin-district in the world, Perak producing from 20,000 to 25,000 tons of tin annually, and the Kiuta valley being the chief producer. The valley runs approximately north and south, and is 30 miles long by 12 wide. It is very flat, the mountain-ranges on either side rising abruptly from the plain, that on the east being the great Central range of the peninsula, and that on the west a subsidiary range marked " Kledang " on the map, Fig. 1. The valley is drained by the Kinta river, which rises in the eastern mountain range and flows south to join the Perak river, being joined by numerous streams from both mountain-ranges. The rain-fall is heavy, averaging annually about 90 in. The whole country is covered with dense jungle, except where it has been cleared for mining-operations and a small amount of cultivation. Mining villages are scattered throughout the valley, the chief towns being Kampar, Batu Gajah, Lahat and Ipoh, the latter being the center of the mining-operations. An ideal section of the main geological features of the Kinta valley is given in Fig. 2. The valley is composed of a highly crystalline limestone, usually white in color, sometimes gray; in fact, it may be called marble. It is always highly inclined and often contorted, and in some places is interbedded with shale. On the east side of the valley, near its contact with the granite, it forms a remarkable series of limestone cliffs, which rise in some cases as high as 2,000 ft. above the level of the limestone in the valley. THE modulus of elasticity is defined as the ratio of stress within the proportional limit to corresponding strain. This property, as thus defined, is a constant for each kind of material; and in tension or compression is usually designated by the symbol E. The modulus of elasticity serves as an index of the stiffness of a material or a measure of its ability to resist change of shape under stresses not higher than the proportional limit. In view of the frequency with which the modulus of elasticity is used in engineering calculations, it is surprising to note the uncertainty that exists as to authentic values, and the marked lack of published information relating to the variation of the constant E within individual alloy systems. A value of 10,000,000 lb. per sq. in. has been quoted as representative of aluminum and its alloys. This value has been found to be approximately correct for pure aluminum and aluminum alloys in which the total percentage of the alloying elements is low, but seriously in error in the case of alloys that contain relatively large amounts of the alloying elements.

PHOSPHATE deposits have been worked in many countries of central and south central Tennessee, but only ht ebrown rock deposits of Maury and Giles Counties will be discussed at any length in this articles, as all of the major opeations are now located there. They are: Mt. Pleasant District-Federal Chemical Co., Hoover and Mason Phosphae Co., International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (Maury and Giles Counties), Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp. (formerly Charleston Mining Co.), and Victor Chemical Co. Columbia District-Armour Fertilizer Works and Monsanto Chemical Co. In the near future, the well-known, extensive deposits of blue rock in Lewis and Hickman Counties,also the brown rock in Hickman, Willamson, Summer and Davidson Counties, will again come into production. Certain physical peculiarities of the Tenessee deposit have played an important part in the design and use of mining and milling equipment.

IN fighting a war the all-absorbing intent is to win. There is little time to analyze the rush of events or to appraise their consequences beyond the war's end. The united objective is, rightly, success for our arms. Yet under the pressures of a great war there may be compressed scientific, economic and social developments that might have taken many decades to achieve under less urgent conditions. Their effects on our lives and all civilization may be more wide-reaching and lasting than any military conquest. They constitute one of the must imperative incentives to victory. No American, least of all any scientist worthy the name, conceivably could endorse war as a justifiable means to progress. The destruction of life and property wrought by the present war far exceeds the havocs of a century's earthquakes. Most of mankind is burning itself on an altar of paganism. Nonetheless, one fact is inescapable Despite the recurrent malady of war history's overall course is forward. Mankind has the habit of rising phoenix-like from its own ashes to attain greater heights. Progress is immortal.

The liquidus diagram for the iron field of the Fe-S-O system has been derived experimentally. The solubility of oxygen in molten Fe-S alloys has been measured at several temperatures and found first to decrease slightly and then increase rapidly with increasing sulphur content. IT is well-known that the types, distribution, and amount of inclusions in any given steel are closely allied with the oxygen and sulphur contents of the metal, so that the term "deoxidation" as conventionally applied in steelmaking refers not only to the control of oxygen and oxide inclusions but to collateral modification of sulphide inclusions as well. Inclusions commonly occur in steel as mixtures of oxides and sulphides, sometimes closely associated and sometimes apparently completely divorced. Their effects on the properties of the metal may vary widely depending on their types and distribution as well as on their quantity. The mechanism by which inclusions form, however, and the means for controlling it are exceedingly complex and not well understood. Nevertheless, as described by Benedicts and Lofquist' and by Wentrup' all oxide and sulphide inclusions, excluding mechanically entrained matter, must result from specific modifications of the basic equilibria of the Fe-S-O system. In an investigation of the mechanism of deoxidation and inclusion formation being carried out at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, it became evident that quantitative data for the fundamental Fe-S-O system were essential to a better understanding of the problem. Consequently, the liquidus surface of the portion of the Fe-S-O diagram of interest in steelmaking has been determined, and the solubility of oxygen in liquid iron containing sulphur has been measured. Fe-S-O Diagram The portion of the Fe-S-O diagram of specific interest in steelmaking is the Fe-FeS-FeO corner. Of the contiguous binary diagrams for this partial system, only those for Fe-FeO and Fe-FeS are known with reasonable certainty.3 Several attempts to derive the FeO-FeS diagram have been made, chief among them being the work of Giani as reported by Oberhoffer,4 and, more recently, that of Vogel and Fulling." Although both Giani and Vogel and Fulling published diagrams for the FeO-FeS system, their observations indicated that the oxide component approximated Fe3O4 rather than FeO, so that there is doubt whether the system is truly binary. Benedicts and Lofquist and also Wentrup published qualitative sketches of the ternary diagram based on the assumption that it was of the type described by Marsh for a ternary system in which two of the contiguous binary systems are simple eutectic systems and the third exhibits a solubility gap in the liquid. Apparently, however, the only previous effort to establish the diagram experimentally was that of Vogel and Fülling whose results are reproduced in Fig. 1. Although defining approximately the limits of the miscibility gap and the location of the ternary eutectic, point E in Fig. I, Vogel and Fülling's diagram must be considered only semiquantitative. It was derived from a limited number of observations mainly along two quasi-binary sections, and the directions of the tie-lines and the location of the critical point, K in Fig. 1, were estimated by computation. Experimental Procedure The experimental technique employed for the present investigation involved melting mixtures of ferrous sulphide and ferric oxide in contact with iron. Since it was considered that in this part of the system the vapor pressures of sulphur and SO, are so low that they would not affect the results significantly, the melting was carried out in a current of argon to sweep out products of any initial re-

This chapter presents a successful approach for achieving mine entry stability at the Cane Creek potash mine by the utilization of closure measurements. The mine is located in southeastern Utah (Fig. l). Mining is being conducted at depths in excess of 3000 ft under structurally complex geologic conditions typical of the Paradox salt basin. The closure measurement systems described have definite application for determining relative entry stability in other nonelastic rocks which are similar in behavior to potash. Similar types of closure measurements have been taken in various underground openings throughout the United States, Canada, arid Europe. Application of this closure data has previously met with varying degrees of success as a tool for design of under- ground openings in both elastic and nonelastic media.1-32 Closure measurements can be made easily and economically and they provide a practical solutiori to a practical problem. They are in-situ measurements which do not necessarily require laboratory correlation. Simple closure measurements have special significance in potash because "steady-state" ' closure rate, or creep, of the entries is measured. These closure rates can be utilized because nonelastic media such as potash will never achieve absolute stability around a mine entry. The potash will tend to creep or deform until all entries are closed and the overburden stress is redistributed over what was previously the mine area. THE significance of the hcp (E) structure, which appears when Fe-Cr-Ni alloys (stainless steels) are transformed martensitically, has been the subject of considerable study and speculation.'-7 It has been proposed that the hcp structure is an intermediate phase in the transformation: fcc (austenite) — hcp (E) -bcc (0, martensite). However, recent studies by transmission electron microscopy6,7 have indicated that the hcp structure may be a consequence of the large shear strain (10 deg) associated with the fcc to bcc transformation. That is, the transformation to a bcc structure is accompanied by extensive dissociation of dislocations in the parent austenite, which has a low stacking-fault energy.'-'' X-ray diffraction analysis of the transformed alloy reveals a pattern of lines corresponding to an hcp structure, together with the parent austenite and the bcc product. The fact that the hcp structure is observed only in association with the bcc product in these alloys1'4'6'7 lends support to the conclusion that the hcp structure is a secondary product of the transformation. But, the evidence is circumstantial and more definite resolution of the two possibilities mains to be obtained. If the hcp structure is an intermediate product of the transformation, as in 1) above, then two distinct Ms temperatures should be observed, Ms and To evaluate this possibility, three different techniques that are particularly sensitive to the structural changes accompanying such transformations have been used in an attempt to detect two transformation temperatures in an Fe-15.1 Cr-11.7 Ni alloy: 1) high-sensitivity differential thermal analysis, 2) the temperature dependence of resonant frequency (elastic moduli), and 3) internal friction of cylindrical specimens vibrating in either longitudinal or torsional modes. To obtain the necessary sensitivity, a differential thermal analysis technique was developed for the purpose, Fig. 1. The differential temperature between a nickel standard and the specimen was amplified to produce a sensitivity of 0.02OC (0.7 v) in temperature difference. The specimen and the standard were surrounded by a copper block and the entire assembly was immersed in a solution of methyl and ethyl alcohol, freezing point, - 140OC, which provided the necessary thermal stability to reduce temperature fluctuations to negligible proportions. A cooling rate of about 1.5OC per min was obtained by bubbling liquid nitrogen through the liquid bath. In order to calibrate the experiment with respect to the evolution of heat in the transformation from fcc to hcp structures, differential cooling curves were obtained for an Fe-19.8 Mn alloy, which transforms martensitically to E.'"-' a Ms(e) temperature of 145°C was clearly defined by a temperature

Creep of very coarse grained, high purity aluminum was studied at 400° to 1100°F with an initial stress range of 50 to 1200 psi. The process of boundary sliding and migration was studied. The driving force of boundary migration under creep conditions is shown to be a combination of strain energy migrationand surface energy. A theory is presented regarding the strainenergyrole the grain boundaries play under creep conditions. From this thetheory intercrystalline failure of commercial alloys can be explained. Also from this theory an optimum grain size should exist for good high temperature properties of high purity materials. IN the investigation of the creep of very coarse grained, high purity aluminum previously reported,' the cyclic nature of the process of grain boundary sliding and migration has been established by microscopic observation of the actual creep process as well as metallographically. It was also substantiated by measuring localized strains across the grain boundaries. In addition, it was shown how extensive subgrain and fold formation may result from boundary sliding and how the slid grain boundary may become sharply wavy as a result of subgrain formation. Since the publication of those results, additional information on the process of grain boundary sliding and migration has been obtained. It is the purpose of this paper to report on the direction and driving force of boundary sliding and migration, the effect of grain size, and the effect of temperature. Finally the effect of decreasing purity (alloys 2s and 3s) on the process of boundary sliding and migration is noted. From these results, an explanation is presented for the intercrystalline failure of alloys under creep conditions. The effects of grain size on the creep properties of impure and high purity materials are discussed in the same light. The experimental procedures and technique have been presented elsewhere.' It is only necessary to state how the 2s and 3s aluminum specimens are prepared. Machined specimens were first annealed at 600°F for about 12 hr. In order to produce a large grain size the specimens were then stretched 3 to 8 pct. The specimens were marked with reference marks, electropolished, annealed at 900°F for 24 hr and at 1150°F for 12 hr, and repolished. The grain size of 2s aluminum produced by this treatment is comparable to that of high purity aluminum in the direction of its width of the specimen, i.e., there are 2 to 4 grains across the width of the specimen. However, the grains of 2s aluminum are 3 to 10 times longer in the direction of the specimen axis. On the other hand, the grain size of coarse grained 3s aluminum ranges from 10 to 20 grains across the width of the specimen due to the treatment just outlined and therefore is much smaller than that of both high purity and 2s aluminum. As in 2s aluminum, the grains are about 3 to 10 times longer in the direction of the specimen axis than in the direction of the width of the specimen. The arrangements of the grains in 2s and 3s aluminum were generally irregular; therefore it was difficult to follow the course of the grain boundaries. Results Method of Presentation: In order to show the arrangement of the grains, especially the direction and positions of the grain boundaries, traces of the grain boundaries on the four surfaces of the specimens were unfolded and mapped out after macroetching. Figs. 1 and 2 show the structural development drawings of specimens P-3 and P-8 respectively. Ways are discussed of appraising chances in conformance with probability principles, and graphs are suggested to show tonnages, grades and the corresponding judged expectancies. Introduction When exploratory development of a mineral deposit is contemplated, three interrelated questions normally must be answered before a sound decision can be reached. How much will the program cost? How much will the anticipated ore add to the immediate value of the mine? And what is the chance of developing this ore? To justify development, the deposit should present a favorable disparity between the three factors, cost, chance and return. If, for example, there is a 50-50 chance of success, the ore that is sought should have an immediate worth (after deducting all subsequent charges that it must bear) of more than twice the cost of the development. Likewise, if the chance of finding the ore is but one in five, that ore should enhance the immediate value of the mine by more than five times the cost of developing it- With sound economic and operating assumptions, the cost of exploratory development and a present value of anticipated ore may be estimated within reasonable limits. Less general attention has been given to appraising ore chances in comparable terms. The exploratory experience of the mining industry is broad enough that knowledge, vision and judgment may be combined to yield more tangible evaluations of Ore expectancy than are now customary' A way of making such appraisals is suggested herein. The mathematics of probabilities cannot be applied directly to the search for ore. By coupling applicable principles of probability, however, with pertinent experience gained in mineral exploration, an estimate often can be made of the chance of finding a certain tonnage and grade of Ore in a specific location. Such estimated, or judged, expectancies for the several blocks of ground in a deposit may be combined in a simple chart to show the relationship of the various exploratory possibilities and the potential magnitude of the deposit' An engineer or geologist may find that the quantitative thinking required for an appraisal of this type is an aid in clarifying and coordinating his views and recommendations. The following tests were made, during 1889, for the Susquehanna Coal Company, to determine the relative efficiency of several styles of mine-car wheels in use at their collieries at Nanticoke, Pa. The wheels experimented upon may be divided into two classes: The "old style" (Figs. 1 and 2), which are oiled at every trip; and the "new style" (Figs. 3, 4, and 5), which require oiling about once in two to four months. Fig. 1 shows a section of a plain cast wheel, with patent annular oil-chamber. This is held in position on the axle by a square, split cotter-pin. Fig. 2 is a similar wheel, with a patent cast bushing, which is readily replaced when worn. The lubrication is effected by a simple oil-hole, but the oil is delivered a little inside of the gaugeline of the wheel, where it is most needed. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are sections of a " new style " patented, self-oiling wheel. In this, the outer end is cast closed, and the wheel is fastened to the axle by a spring cotter-pin passed through one of the plugged holes. Dirt is prevented from entering the open end by a cap, with faced end and packing-ring, fitting over the end of the hub. The lubricant is introduced into the oil-chamber through one of the plugged holes in the hub. In the valuable paper of Mr. Dunbar D. Scott and its varied discussion, on the evolution of mine-surveying instruments, the tripod-head has not received the attention it merits. During the last 50 years this very necessary adjunct to the surveyor's instrument has been much improved. The legs are of better construction; and the devices for laterally moving the instrument over the station-point and for quick leveling, without the use of the screws, have given to the instrument fitted with the modern tripod-head the same facilities possessed by the oldfashioned ball-and-socket, with more perfect accuracy, not attainable in the latter, while saving from 30 to 50 per cent. of the time required for setting the instrument over a station. Woodward, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and Dr. Robert W. Hunt, of Chicago, made addresses to which Mr. Swasey responded. Dr. Michael I. Pupin, Chairman of Engineering Foundation, made the closing address. The evening was marked by the high character of the addresses, inspiration for grave duties lying before the engineering profession, and by the spirit of good fellowship. Tars paper is intended only to give a preliminary account of experiments made, and conclusions reached, concerning the treatment of certain refractory low-grade gold-ores, the profitable reduction of which may furnish a useful guide to the solution of similar mining and metallurgical problems, not only in the gold-bearing belt of the Southern United States, but perhaps in other regions also. It must be regarded as simply a ?report of progress," preceding a more elaborate and conclusive report of regular practice. The mines of the Hillabee Gold Mining Co. are located upon what is generally known locally as Hog Mountain, on the northern edge of Tallapoosa county, Ala., about 15 miles from Goodwater and 14 miles from Alexander City, stations on the Central of Georgia Railway. Gold has been known since 1839 to exist on this property, where it was discovered in that year by a man named Johnston. The property was worked for placer-gold by the old miners, and there are now the remains of four attempts to operate it by stamp-mill and plate-amalgamation. The present owners purchased it in 1896, and since that time they have experimented at frequent intervals, in order to devise a process that would satisfactorily recover the gold. In 1903 regular operations were begun. Geologically, the mountain consists of an intrusion of what has been pronounced true granite in altered sedimentary slates. The cooling of the granite produced shrinkage-cracks, which have become veins. There is considerable question as to the period of the slate formation; but it is undoubtedly, in my opinion, of Carboniferous age. This paper concerns measurements of low-velocity air currents and investigations on mine ventilation by means of chemical smoke. The chemical smoke used is produced without flame and at ordinary mine temperatures, and therefore presents no ignition hazard in gaseous mines. Mining men who have worked in open-light mines are familiar with the use of tobacco smoke in determining the direction of air travel and approximately measuring low-velocity air currents. The use of chemical smoke is merely a refinement on the use of tobacco smoke and the flameless low-temperature source of chemical smoke has the additional advantage that it can be used in gaseous mines. Ventilation smoke apparatus, Fig I, is a simple device for producing dense white smoke. The apparatus as shown consists of a rubber aspirator bulb which is used to force air through a glass "smoke tube" containing a chemical substance that produces a dense white smoke on contact with air. The apparatus was developed by engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.' It is inexpensive, weighs less than 3 oz, is easily carried in a pocket, and requires no skill to operate. Smoke apparatus is invaluable in practical mine ventilation work for: (I) measuring low-velocity air currents, (2) detecting air leakage, (3) observing airflow characteristics. This paper is written to show the merits of the apparatus, and is based upon findings through its extensive use, during the past six years, in mines operated by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. The Apparatus Certain chemicals, such as stannic chloride (SnCl4) and pyrosulphuric acid (H2S2O7) produce "white smoke" when exposed to air. Stannic chloride gives off vapors which on contact with moist air cause the formation of solid hydrates, of which SnCl4.5H20 is the most important. Pyrosulphuric acid decomposes when exposed to air with the evolution of sulphur trioxide (SO3) fumes, which become white upon contacting moisture in the air. A chemical, such as one of the above, is the active substance in a smoke tube. The glass tubes are hermetically sealed during manufacture, and are made ready for use by merely breaking off the tips at the conveniently located file cuts. When the smoke tube is connected to the aspirator, depressing the aspirator bulb forces air into contact with the chemical, and smoke discharges from the open end of the tube. A white solid (a hydrate if stannic chloride is used, or sulphur trioxide if pyrosulphuric acid is used) may occasionally form a cake in the outlet opening of a smoke tube. A COMMITTEE, representing a number of the larger oil companies in California, met in San Francisco on Nov. 12, 1919, for the purpose of discussing the depletion deductions to be allowed in computing the Federal income taxes under the Internal Revenue Act of 1918. It was the general sense of the committee that a system based on sound engineering principles should be formulated for estimating the value of oil properties, so that better and more uniform results might be obtained by the various companies in filing their returns with the' Bureau of Internal Revenue. A subcommittee, consisting of five petroleum engineers, was thereupon appointed to collect information and draft a report. The committee consisted of G. C. Gester, Carl H. Beal, J. H. G. Wolf, E. G. Gaylord, and E. D. Nolan; this report is the work of that subcommittee.
