IT IS doubtful whether anything new can be said upon this subject and, therefore, it is with considerable hesitation that l prepare this paper. On account of my recent connection with the Department of State as its law- officer, perhaps I will be pardoned if I discuss this subject briefly from the point of view of that branch of the Government. , I cannot, of course, speak for that department, since I have-no connection with it at-present, but it may be helpful if I set down certain* of the factors which in my opinion and from my experience have a bearing on this international problem. With oil-burning ships, motor vessels, motor vehicles, airplanes-all consuming, astonishing quantities of petroleum or petroleum products; with the United States having within its borders only 12 per cent. of the petroleum resources of the world, and consuming about 70 per cent. of the world's output; with the more enterprising nations wide awake to the necessity ; of obtaining and preserving as large a share as possible of the oil resources extant ; the 'problem is peculiarly and in a, very practical sense an international one.

A complete swies of solid solutions has been found between the compounds InAs and GaAs Below the solidus. The melting relations determined by differential thermal and static quenching technzques, indicate that the liquidus and solidus are of the simple ascendant type. No evidence of unmixing of the homogeneous solid solutions was observed at sub-solidus temperatures. A quenching method for locnting the solidus, using X-ray diffraction techniques, is described in some detail. THE semi-conducting properties of compounds formed by various combinations of the less familiar intermetallic elements have created an increasing interest in the phase relations in systems involving these elements. The complete phase diagram of such a system, containing a compound of special interest, will often provide information as to the most favorable conditions for preparing large crystals from a melt, as well as specifying the temperature stability of the crystalline phase or phases produced. In view of the current importance of gallium arsenide in semiconductor research and of the structural similarities of indium arsenide, it was thought that the complete phase relations of the system InAs-GaAs should be investigated. Previous work on the system Ga-As by Koster and homa' and on In-As by Liu and peretti2 has shown that GaAs and InAs are the only compounds formed, having melting points of 1238° and 942°C, respectively. In a survey of various systems of elements from groups IIIb and Vb, spengler3 also re- Mines Ltd., for his continuing encouragement and for permission to publish the results of this work. ports complete miscibility of gallium, indium, and arsenic in the liquid state. In a partial investigation of the InAs-GaAs system, Woolley and smith4 found extensive solid solution throughout the alloy range. Their subsolidus work, however, was inconclusive at temperatures below 900" and they did not determine the liquidus relationships of the system. PRESENT INVESTIGATION The starting materials used were high-purity gallium, indium, and arsenic. The method of preparation of the compounds follows that devised by M. Shafer and is described in detail in a paper by Shafer and eiser.' The end-member compounds, GaAs and InAs, were first prepared by reaction of the elements in the desired proportions in evacuated silica glass vials. The vials were rotated in a furnace as the temperature was slowly raised to insure rapid and complete reaction at low temperatures. Thereafter the starting materials, GaAs and InAs, were melted by heating the sealed vials to 1300" and 1000°C, respectively; the vials in this case were filled as completely as possible to keep the vapor space small and thereby minimize the loss of arsenic to the vapor phase. Ten binary mixtures of these compounds were then prepared by reaction of the powdered material in the solid state just below solidus temperatures. At 900C preparations containing 3, 5, 8, 10, 25, 35, 50, and 75 mol pct GaAs were found to be single homogeneous phases, indicating a complete series of solid solutions between GaAs and InAs. Moreover, it was discovered that the homogeneity of any crystalline binary preparation could be very accurately checked by X-ray diffraction because of the large differences in unit cell dimensions of the end membe5s. The cubic lattice constant ofor GaAs is a = 5.652A and that of InAs is a = 6.061A

The object of this work was to obtain and correlate information on effect of internal stress in variously drawn tubes on several properties. Also, a simple approximate method of comparing types of stress distribution in such variously drawn tubes was sought. There is also included some work on comparison of single and polycrystalline materials and effect of different types of operation and preferred orientation. Preparation of Material A series of tubes was drawn to study the effect of the type and degree of final reduction on various physical properties and the approximate distribution of stress intensity across the tube wall. The material used all came from a single heat of 70-30 brass melted in a regular production Ajax-Wyatt induction furnace. The analysis of the metal as cast was: copper, 70.36 per cent; lead, 0.04; iron, 0.02; zinc, balance. The material was cast in "shells" with 4 in. outside diameter and in. wall thickness. It was drawn part way down according to the usual standard mill schedule and then by suitable individual schedules to finish by a variety of types and degrees of drawing to the same final cases in every instance; namely, 0.750 in. outside diameter by 0.080 in. wall thickness. The exact final draws, together with the percentage area reductions, diameter reductions and gage reductions are given in Table 1. In fabricating these tubes, rather unusual precautions were observed to insure the elimination of ail variables not under immediate study. All intermediate anneals were carried out at about 1200" F. down to the so-called "cut-in size"; namely, 17/16 by 3/16 in. From this point on, all anneals were made at from 1050' to 1100" F. The greatest care was used all through to have the tubes as free from minor surface defects as possible. When such defects were visible on intermediate sizes they were carefully filed out. On the final draw to 3/4-in diameter the die was aligned with the greatest possible precision in order to insure as straight a tube as possible

A. G. Cockbain—The paper by Burlingame, Bitsianes and Joseph is of great interest in extending the work done on high grade sinters, particularly that of Hessle, and the development and application to them of the technique of McBriar, Johnson, Andrews and Davies on ironstone sinters. In this laboratory the work of McBriar et al. has also been continued and extended to cover high grade sinters, and a sectioning technique similar to that used by McBriar et al. was attempted on sinter cakes made in the laboratory sinter unit, using magnetite concentrates (containing 64 pct Fe). In these experiments no attempt was made to flush out the products of combustion with nitrogen before cooling. It was considered that free air penetration would occur on only a limited scale with the size of sinter cake made (14 in. sq x 12 in. deep). Chemical analyses of the zones showed generally similar features of those described by Burlingame et al. and especially the FeO rich region at and just behind the flame front, i.e. zones of ignition and combustion. This seems to indicate that the nitrogen atmosphere does not materially affect the states of oxidation in the sinter cake or at least that special care is not required unless the sinter cake is small. Burlingame et al. consider that FeO present has some significant part to play in the mechanism of sintering. This view does not find favor with the author. The reduction of iron oxides in the presence of red hot coke is a well known phenomenon, whether conducted in an atmosphere of nitrogen or in a crucible in air, and in view of the presence of some carbon in the hot sinter, especially just at the ignition zone, cessation of the progress of the flame front will in no way affect the reduction of iron oxides near hot coke. Even in a nitrogen atmosphere some CO and CO, will be generated by reduction and by continual oxidation and reduction of CO as the transfer agent, the oxidation state of the iron oxides can be lowered quite rupidly so long as free carbon exists with enough heat. Knowing the composition of the gas at the flame front (obtainable by probes), it would be possible to calculate the static oxidation state of Fe2O3/Fe3O2 in equilibrium with it and hence obtain a check on the chemical analyses to see if in fact direct reduction of the Fe2O3/Fe2O1 to FeO has taken place. Have the authors attempted this? It appears to this writer that what is required is some means of reducing rapidly the heat content of the ignition zone and immediately behind, and at the same time insuring no oxidation by the air. In ironstone sinters the difficulty of oxidation state of the iron did not arise on account of the very large slag bulk. However, in high grade sinters knowledge of this, and also the mechanism whereby high oxidation states can be obtained in the final sinter, is of great interest. R. D. Burlingame (author's reply)—The question has been raised as to whether the high FeO content found in high-fuel sinters is due to actual reduction at the advancing flame front or due to unavoidable direct reduction during the quenching period. For such direct reduction to have taken place in the freshly-formed sinter, a considerable amount of solid carbon would have had to escape combustion and be available throughout the hot sinter zone during the quenching period. A simple stoichiometric calculation with the limited data available indicates that a zone of freshly-formed sinter over 2 in. wide must have averaged roughly 2 pct C to accomplish the amount of reduction found. Furthermore, the presence of this amount of carbon would indicate that the fuel in the charge had not burned over a narrow front but over a zone at least 2 in. thick. In contrast to such a condition, the data of the present investigation indicate that the combustion of fuel is confined mainly to a narrow front in which high temperatures and reducing conditions favor. the formation of excess ferrous iron.

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) EVERY engineer has occasion to trace or copy a map, plan, or other drawing on paper too thick for the ordinary way of using tracing-cloth or tracing-paper. When the figure is small and simple a copy may be made by holding the original against a window-pane, covering it with the paper, and tracing direct by the aid of the strong sunlight from outside. The need of utilizing this principle on a larger scale and in a more convenient position led Dr. J. C. Branner to plan the table of which the following is a description: This table was first made in the form of an adjustable glass-top table with a mirror beneath, in 1887, while Dr. Branner was State Geologist of Arkansas. Later it was modified as experience suggested until the form as here described was evolved. The device consists essentially of a drafting-table with a plate-glass top, upon which the original drawing and the paper are laid, and a mirror mounted underneath to reflect the light of the sky up through the drawing. The glass top is hinged and fitted with two arms and thumb-screws, so that it can be raised and fixed to any position, either inclined or horizontal. The mirror is pivoted and revolves about a horizontal axis, so that it may be tilted to any angle. The hood of cardboard or black cloth prevents the reflection of light from the tracing, and may or may not be attached to the table. The apparatus is set up before a window through which part of the unobstructed sky is visible. The mirror is then adjusted like the reflector of a microscope, so that the skylight is reflected up through the drawing. If the mirror can be so located that the direct rays of the sun are reflected through the drawings, thicker paper can be used. The map or drawing may be held in place by clips screwed

The operations described in this paper are those of the flotation plant of the Valley Forge Cement Co. at Conshohocken, Pa., and concern the use of a particular cationic reagent—namely, DP-243. The role of this reagent in this plant may be better understood by first considering the purpose of beneficiating cement rock in general and the specific problems at the Valley Forge plant. The ultimate purpose of beneficiating cement rock is to obtain a kiln feed of the desired chemical composition in a form suitable for the most efficient kiln operation. The chemical composition is governed by the type of cement to be made. Before government restrictions (the purpose of which is to simplify operations during wartime) limited the types of portland cement a manufacturer is permitted to produce, five principal types of cement were generally recognized by the industry. They are based upon chemical and physical specifications proposed by the American Society for Testing Materials, federal and other governmental agencies, state highway departments, water boards and other users of large quantities of cement. The physical as well as chemical specifications for any particular type of cement necessitate proper proportioning of the major components—that is, the silica, alumina, iron and lime—and it is necessary to establish and maintain definite limits for each in the raw mix. The manufacturer must then prepare a kiln feed of a composition that will yield a final product that will fulfill the desired specification. This step is further complicated for kilns using coal as fuel, by the amount and analysis of the ash introduced. The amount and nature of the dust lost during burning will also affect the composition of the kiln feed. The problem of preparing a kiln feed of the desired chemical composition is not a simple one, and it is the final product that governs the methods used to obtain such a feed. For example, in starting with a material deficient in lime for the mix sought, it may not be sufficient to raise it to the required lime content. The other constituents must also be present in the proper proportions. In some cases, it may be necessary to raise the lime content to a point greatly exceeding that of the final mix, then, by addition of one or more other materials lower in lime, obtain the mix. The rock used at the Valley Forge plant is a metamorphosed argillaceous limestone of the Jacksonburg formation, the same formation as that of the Lehigh Valley cement rock (which occurs approximately 50 miles north), and its oxide composition is similar to that of the latter. The only practical differences between the two are that, as a result of metamorphosis, crystallization of the Valley Forge rock is considerably coarser and it contains less carbon than the Lehigh Valley rock as well as slightly more magnesia in the form of magnesian mica. The calcium carbonate content of the various strata in the Valley Forge quarry ranges from about 65 per cent to over 85 per cent, the average for the entire quarry being somewhat under the requirement for manufacture of cement, which usually is from 75 to 76 per

When calculating the pressure-volume characteristics of projected mine-ventilating circuits by orthodox methods, certain basic assumptions are required in order to employ the various available empirical data. It is assumed, for example, that the mine air is an incompressible fluid subjected to isothermal flow, an assumption sufficiently accurate for practical purposes since pressure and temperature differentials are small throughout the average circuit. A more erroneous assumption, however, is that all air is accounted for as it travels throughout the mine. No attempt is usually made to evaluate stopping leakage as it occurs; instead, the air volume required at the last crosscuts is assumed to enter the mine, travel the various intake air courses intact, sweep the workings and travel out by the return air courses to the point or points of exit from the mine. Actually, there is a leakage of air from intake to return at every stopping, the quantity of this leakage depending upon the tightness of the stopping and the pressure difference across the stopping. Unfortunately, a lack of empirical data and knowledge of the condition of individual stoppings makes an exact analysis of underground stopping leakage impossible. Generally, leakage is most severe through the old stoppings outbye the circuit. These are also subjected to higher pressure differences than the newer inbye stoppings. Therefore the circuit air volume diminishes at a decreasing rate progressing from outbye to inbye the circuit. Consider a simple mine circuit consisting of one intake and one return air course, each of equal and uniform section area and interconnected at regular intervals with crosscuts equipped with stoppings. At any point X inbye the circuit the air volume q on the intake air course equals that on the return air course and decreases with diminishing rate from outbye to inbye the circuit between the limits of Q1 completely outbye and Q completely inbye. Such a volume change is represented by curve a, Fig. I, which is computed with the aid of the equation q = Q1- (Q1- Q)(X + L)N. This equation results from the general algebraic equation of form q = k, — kXN after solving for kl and k with the knowledge that completely outbye X = o and q = QL, also completely inbye X = L and q = Q. Curves a, b and c, Fig. I, show values of q as ordinates versus values of X as abscissas, for values of N equal to 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00, respectively. Distribution of underground stopping 1eakage directly affects the air-volume distribution along the circuit, which in turn determines the circuit pressure gradient. To deliver any required air volume inbye a circuit or portion thereof requires a higher circuit-pressure differential if stoppings leak than is necessary with tight stoppings. Every mining engineer engaged in the analysis of projected mine-ventilation circuits is therefore confronted with the problem of making proper allowance for the effects of leaking stoppings. I have read with particular interest that portion of the discussion by Anton Eilers referring to the high-lime (and also high-alumina) slags made by August Raht in 1881, while smelting the Horn Silver ores at Franklin, Utah. The two analyses of such slags, furnished by Mr. Raht to Mr. Eilers are: (a) Not determined in this analysis. (b) Not given in Mr. Eilers' paper. Oxygen ratio, A1 as base. An experimental investigation was conducted upon five different paired samples of oil and gas from a field in Louisiana. The study, with each pair of samples, included the measurement of the formation volume and the volume of the liquid phase for three mixtures of the oil and gas. The gas-oil ratio varied from approximately 200 to over 40,000 cu ft per bbl and measurements were made at temperatures between 40" and 250°F. The gravity of the tank oil for the five samples under investigation varied between 38.0" and 55.8" API. A number of diagrams depicting the effect of temperature and gas-oil ratio upon retrograde dew-point pressure are presented. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades a fairly large number of investigations were made of the volumetric behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures. The earlier work of Beecher and Park-hurst' and a more recent report on samples from Dominguez Field2 are typical of research of this nature. Such studies have been used in estimating the volumetric behavior of fluids in producing fields other than those from which samples were taken. Progress has been made3.4.5 in correlating the influence of pressure, temperature, and composition upon the specific and formation volume of hydrocarbon mixtures of relatively low gas-oil ratios, but attempts to extend this correlation to higher ratios have not been particularly successful. The influence of composition upon the volumetric behavior of such systems cannot be simply related to a single parameter such as gas-oil ratio. In order to aid in the extension of the correlation of the volumetric behavior of mixtures of oil and gas to higher ratios, a rather complete study was made of five different pairs of samples from a Louisiana field. The complexity of the influence of composition upon the volumetric and phase behavior of such systems in the regions of retrograde condensation was indicated by earlier Work,6,7,8,9,10 and it is doubtful if simple correlations can be established in these regions with the information currently available. Invasion experiments were run on Berea sandstone cores to get laboratory measurements of resistivity and saturation profiles characteristic of water and oil sands invaded by mud filtrate. Injection rates were as low as 1.13 cm/D, and the cores were 30 to 36 in. long, cut parallel to the bedding planes. In the water-sand case, the resistivity profiles revealed the existence of an extensive transition zone between flushed and uncontaminated zones. In the linear geometry of the experiment, the width of the transition zone increased as the square root of the injected fluid volume. For the oil-sand case the core was prepared by displacing the formation water with kerosene to minimum water saturation. During the subsequent invasion experiment. oil saturation was measured directly by means of an oil-soluble radioactive tracer, and resistivity profiles along the core were taken at the same time. These data were interpreted in terms of an oil-water front, followed by a formation water bank, a zone of mixed waters, and finally, invaded mud filtrate near the borehole. Micro-fingering and capillarity seemed to affect considerably the resistivity profiles observed in the invaded oil-sand experiment. Beyond the regular conductive annulus or "low zone", it was found that a resistive "anti-annulus" could also be formed. As a result of these experiments, some simplified invasion profiles have been accepted and are being used in Grand Slam* interpretations. INTRODUCTION The importance of the mud filtrate-invaded zone in interpreting electrical logs has long been recognized.',* In trying to account for its effect, only very simple models of the resistivity profiles in the radial direction from the borehole have been used. In fact, most log interpretation charts have been based on resistivity models consisiting of two media of uniform resistivity (R, and R,) abruptly separated at the diameter of invasion. Such a clean separation of the media of different resistivities seems unrealistic, since flushing may not be perfect and may vary with radial distance into the formation.3** The nature of the transition zone, when it is within the radius of investigation of the surveying devices, may affect the log readings. Campbell and Martin' verified that a conductive annulus containing a high percentage of formation water may be formed when mud filtrate invades an oil-bearing sand. Interpretations which are to include the effect of such an annulus require the addition to the model of a conductive zone located at the outer rim of the invaded zone.' Using the Buckley-Leverett relations,6 aturation profiles may be derived, from which resistivity profiles can be calculated. Results of such computations by K. S. Kunz and J. H. Moran were given in a paper by Dumanoir. Tixier and Martin,7 and led to the construction of log interpretation charts which were based on a representation with three media of resistivities R, R0 and R1. Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of a resistivity profile which includes an annulus. Campbell and Martin realized that, during the invasion of an oil sand, both capillarity and mixing would contribute to rounding of the profile shown in Fig. 1. In his paper Mr. Braley makes no mention of the bacteriological aspects of the problem. It is now quite well established that certain bacteria play a major role in formation of acid mine waters, and it is a simple matter in the laboratory to show that under sterile conditions the rate of acid production from a pyrites suspension is only about one quarter of that obtained from a similar suspension inoculated with drainage from a mine producing an acidic pit water. Under sterile conditions the oxidation is due to direct chemical action and, from the evidence just given and from much other evidence, this increase under nonsterile conditions is due to certain bacteria. Experiments recently completed, and shortly to be published, have shown that this bacteriological oxidation can be prevented by the maintenance of pH conditions above 4. It was found that to raise this pH above 4 at the beginning of the experiments was not sufficient but that, due to the continuing chemical oxidation, alkali had to be added daily to maintain the pH conditions above 4. The amount of alkali added, however, over a fixed period, was only about one quarter of the alkaline equivalent of the acid produced when pH conditions were not controlled over an equal period. The opinion expressed by Mr. Braley that sodium hydroxide has little or no effect on the rate of oxidation of pyrites is not substantiated by the above experiments. The writer does not claim that these results show a practical solution to the problems, especially in abandoned workings, but feels that the application of an alkaline coating, such as lime wash, to exposed accessible workings might be well worth trying. S. A. Braley (author's reply)—In 1919 Powell and Parrl suggested that bacteria, or some catalytic agent, hastened the oxidation of pyritic or marcastic sulfur in coal. Carpenter and Herndon (1933)' attributed the action of Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Colmer and Hinkle (1947)3 observed an organism similar to T. thiooxidans and another organism that oxidized iron. Leathen and Braley 9rst discovered this organism in 1947 in a sample of water from the overflow of the Bradenville mine (Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania). They characterized the organism in 1954" and gave it the name Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans. Although Temple and Colmer (1951)' had suggested the name Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, since they claimed it oxidized both ferrous iron and thiosulfate, we have found that pure cultures of the organism do not oxidize thiosulfate, hence the name F. ferrooxidans. In 1955 Ashmead7 isolated an organism, similar to the one called Thiobacillus ferrooxidans by Temple and Hinkle, from acid mine water in Scotland. It is probable that this organism was F. ferrooxidans. In 1954 Bryner, Beck, Davis, and Wilsonh reported microorganisms in effluents from copper mine refuse. These organisms appeared to be similar but were not in pure culture. In view of this history of bacterial investigation of acid mine water and our own ten years of experience, we do not agree with Mr. Ashmead that bacteria play a major role in acid formation. We do not find that any of these bacteria will directly oxidize pyritic material. They do, however, augment the chemical formation of sulfuric acid by atmospheric oxidation. In two papers in 1953% eathen, Braley, and McIntyre discuss the role of bacteria in acid formation and postulate the mechanism through which they operate. Mr. Ashmead in his discussion of my paper has assumed that this work was carried on in the presence of acid mine water in which bacteria would be present. This was not the case. Strictly sterile conditions were not maintained, but the organisms present in mine drainages were definitely absent in these experiments. We believe that we have demonstrated that alkalis do not inhibit the chemical oxidation of pyritic material. This is also indicated by Mr. Ashmead's discussion in which he says that alkali must be added daily due to the continuing chemical oxidation. It is interesting to note that Mr. Ashmead finds that maintenance of pH above 4.00 decreases the activity of the bacteria. We have found also that a decrease in pH below 2.8 also inhibits its activity. Table XIII of published data'" illustrates the decrease in activity with increased acidity, although pH values are not given. These values are in comparison with uninoculated controls and show the marked increase in acidity up to 22 weeks but a decline at 29 weeks, at which time the experiment was terminated. It is probable that after a longer period only chemical oxidation would have continued. From our studiesv we have postulated that the iron oxidizing bacterium (Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans) oxidizes the ferrous iron, resulting from chemical oxidation, to ferric iron. The ferric iron then aids the atmospheric oxidation of the sulfuritic material and is itself reduced to ferrous iron, which in turn acts as food for the autotrophic bacteria. Study of the physiologic properties of F. ferrooxidans shows that its preferred pH is about 3.00 and its activity decreases with variation in either direction. It is extremely inactive above pH 4.00 and below 2.5. This inactivity above 4.00 is indicated by Mr. Ashmead's observations. These properties of F. ferrooxidans then correlate perfectly with our hypothesis. Ferrous iron is oxidized very slowly by atmospheric oxygen in highly acid sohtion and since the bacteria become inactive, acid is formed only by atmospheric oxidation. At a pH of 4.00 or above iron is more readily oxidized by atmospheric oxygen, but the bacterial activity is decreased. However, with a pH above 4.00 the ferric iron is removed from the field of activity since its soluble sulfate hy-drolyzes and precipitates the iron as ferric hydroxide or a basic sulfate. As we have shown in the paper under discussion, the alkali does not inhibit the chemical oxidation, and thus the acid formation continues. This

Discussion of the paper of HOWLAND BANCROFT, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1767 to 1769. THEODORE SIMONS, Butte, Mont. (communication to the Secretary*). -While preparing maps and models for use in mining litigations the writer was frequently confronted with the problem referred to in Mr. Bancroft's paper. His chart gives the apparent angle of dip with which a vein should be plotted on a vertical section not at right angles to the strike of the vein. For a quick determination of this apparent angle the writer has used an exceedingly simple graphical method, which he believes may prove helpful to engineers engaged in practical work. It is submitted, not as a criticism of Mr. Bancroft's paper, but as a means of solving the same problem when no chart is available and when calculations would consume too much time. The writer's method requires merely a few lines marked off on a piece of tracing cloth, as shown in Fig. 1: Draw line be on any convenient scale. At b erect a perpendicular, ba. The aim of this paper is to disclose some of the correlations between rock parameters, hidden in Wuerker's "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rocks," 1956. The empirical relations concern dry rocks of varying porosity. Curves and equations interrelating the specific gravity, compressive strength, bar velocity, and Poisson's ratio are presented. In 1956 Wuerker published his "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rock", in which various physical properties of rocks determined by different authorities, are tabulated systematically. The tables are primarily intended for use by mining-, quarrying- and ore-dressing engineers. Since the list of measured parameters for each type of rock includes properties such as — grain size, specific gravity, porosity, compressive strength, static elastic cons:ants (moduli of elasticity, rigidity, specific damping capacity and longitudinal bar velocity) the tables are also of considerable interest to the practical geophysicist. Correlations between rock parameters may enable geophysicists, geologists and civil engineers to transiate measurements from one parameter to another. Even if these translations are of limited accuracy, or valid only within certain specified ranges, they often serve a useful parpose. The aim of this paper is to disclose some of the correlations between rock parameters concealed in wuerker's Tables. Throughout this paper the following symbols and units are used unless otherwise stated: Sg is Specific gravity, the ratio of the density of a specimen to the density of water at 4°C. P is Porosity, in %, the ratio of the volume of voids in a specimen to its total volume. CS is Compressive strength in 1000 p.s.i., the stress under which a specimen will fracture when undergoing a standard compression test. V is Bar Velocity in kilo-feet/sec, the velocity of longitudinal seismic waves measured in a slender bar type specimen. This report is concerned with fluid displacement in porous media, in those cases where viscous and gravitational forces control the displacement. Such a system would usually be found in a sand body of large physical dimensions such as an oil reservoir, although it is possible to create such a system in the laboratory. It is shown that the position of the fluid interface can be predicted by numerical calculations using a basic idea presented by Dietz. Fluid flow is considered in a vertical plane in a homogeneous, porous medium of sufficient thickness that the capillary transition zone is small in comparison with the total reservoir. A theory developed by Dietz' is used to make numerical calculations of the position of the fluid interface. The results for several conditions are compared with scaled model experiments. The results show that, for gas drive in a reservoir of steep dip, a relatively low flow rate can displace large volumes of oil before gas breakthrough. On the other hand, water injection at favorable mobility ratio and low dip may show best performance at high rates. Water tends to underride the oil and, given sufficient rime, will break through without much oil displacement. For certain conditions, which include relatively low flow rate, the interface is a straight line and its behavior is simple to calculate. At higher flow rates, the interface is unstable, and a numerical solution was programed for an automatic computer. In general, good agreement is shown between the fluid model and the computed results so long as gravitational forces have control. For a water drive at very unfavorable mobility ratio, many small water fingers appear. These viscous fingers are not controlled by the relatively small gravitational forces. When viscous fingering becomes the controlling factor, the mathematical model is oversimplified, and results do not check the fluid flow model. INTRODUCTION Present methods of reservoir analysis depend upon certain simplifying assumptions to obtain mathematical descriptions of practical use. Material-balance methods (Muskat2 or Tarner2) assume uniform fluid saturations in the entire reservoir, or in a few subdivisions of the reservoir. An unsteady-state flow calculation by West, er at considered pressure and saturation changes in flow to a well during solution gas drive, and neglected gravity effects. Results showed only a 4 per cent difference for ultimate oil recovery by the Muskat method, even though the case chosen for study was one in which unsteady-state effects should be high. The Buckley-Leverett5 method commonly assumes a one-dimensional flow system. It is applicable at high flow rates where viscous forces predominate over gravity forces. Simultaneous, parallel flow of the two fluids is assumed, and the concept of a fluid interface is not introduced. Permeabilities to each fluid for a given saturation must be known. The method is not applicable for a two-dimensional system where cross flow becomes possible. Less well known is the displacement equation derived by Dietz. This method is designed for two-dimensional flow systems and assumes a definable fluid interface within the porous medium. Dietz showed that, for a range of low flow rates, the interface would be stable. straight and at an angle of inclination which could be simply calculated. At a certain critical flow rate, the calculated interface tilt would equal the formation dip. For higher flow rates, a finger of displacing fluid would invade the displaced fluid. Dietz indicated that his method applied only to macroscopic reservoir behavior, while the Buckley-Leverett method applied to the small transition zone at the fluid interface. The examples worked out in this report are based on the fluid-displacement theory of Dietz. It is shown that the Dietz theory may be used to derive equations analogous to the Buckley-Leverett equations. In contrast to the Buckley-Leverett method, flow is considered in a plane rather than being limited to a line. Rather than a frontal advance, the movement of a fluid interface is followed. For flow rates substantially exceeding the critical rate and for high viscosity ratio, many fingers of invading fluid occur-—rather than the single finger assumed by Dietz. On the other hand, so long as some gravitational influence remains, the flow is not entirely parallel to the bedding planes as assumed by Buckley and Leverett; therefore, both methods fail to give an adequate descrip-

EFFORT to develop fundamental quantitative information and improved technique in the production of petroleum has long been faced with difficulties of a particularly evasive nature, owing to a combination of circumstances. In the first place, petroleum comes from far below the ground, out of sight, so that information derived from indirect observations must be extrapolated to reservoir conditions. If one does not force the analogy too far, the petroleum engineer may be said to be somewhat in the position of the astronomer. The actual phenomena which he wishes to observe in detail appear at a place so deep in the earth?s crust that personal observations and direct experiments are impossible.

Ross The first meeting of the Columbia Section was held on March 24, as a part of the 1916 Northwest Mining Convention which was held under the -auspices of the Spokane Mining Men's Club assisted by the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, the technical program being in charge of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association assisted by the local sections of the A. I. E. E., A. S. C. E., and A. I. M. E. The program of the successive sessions was carefully arranged with view to its application to mining, and in addition to the technical program there were exhibits of ores, minerals, devices, etc., of interest to the delegates, who numbered over 500. A portion of the program was also arranged with special reference to the requirements of the prospector and miner. A reception, a banquet, a complimentary luncheon, a regular daily call' of the Stock Exchange, a visit to the High Schools and to one of the substations of the Washington Water Power Company and to the Union Iron Works kept the visitors entertained, the ladies being looked after by a special committee of ladies who held open house during the entire week. Several important resolutions were passed by the Convention and one by the Columbia Section, A. 1. M. E. With Stanly A. Easton, chairman, presiding, the Columbia Section, American Institute of Mining Engineers, occupied the time between 2.00 and 5.30 p.m., March 24th, the Moorish room of the Spokane hotel being filled with members and their guests. "The Apex Law and the Mineral Surveyor" was a paper presented by F. W. Callaway and generally dis-cussed because of its local application in the Coeur d'Alenes, the conclusions being reached after expensive litigation between two of the large mining operators in that district.
