The release of these data would benefit the mining industry as a whole. Particularly valuable would be the details of drilling programs that have been tested by actual mining operations, as most of the available published material is unsupported by production records. The scope of this paper is limited to a few of the commonest problems of interpreting diamond-drill core and sludge samples and the deviation of holes. It does not include the description of routine operations performed by the drillers, nor the estimation of ore reserves. The methods of calculating reserves have been described 25,26,31,32.50,65 but more information is needed on the results shown by actual mining operations. CORE SAMPLING The accuracy of diamond-drill-hole sampling depends in large measure on the percentage of core recovery. As a general rule, the longer the run, the poorer is the recovery. Although the longer runs allow cheaper drilling costs, the determining factor should be the percentage of recovery desired. The problem is one of balancing accuracy against costs. Holes of larger diameter may show improved recovery, except as Joralemon* points out that there are some conditions in which small holes give better core recovery than large holes. This is particularly true, he says, in rocks like shattered quartzite, where larger core tends to break in angular fragments and grind up, while the diameter of smaller core is less than the distance between joint planes and grinding is not so serious. In a large measure the length of the sample run should depend on the type of deposit. Favorable drilling may allow uniform sample runs of 5 ft., 10 ft., or perhaps 20 ft. In veins or beds of relatively narrow widths and changing characteristics, however, the ore zone may be overrun and ground in a core barrel full of waste rock. Generally it is desirable to break the sample at a change in the rock or ore. Such a change, often indicated by a color change in the sludge water, should be a signal for the driller to make a "dry" block and to pull out that run regardless of the length. AT the meeting of the Board of Directors on Jan. 28, 1927, the tentative budget of this Institute for next year was discussed, and in connection with the evident necessity for a larger income to meet increasing demands for service, the advisability of in- creasing the dues of members, was brought up. W. Spen- cer Hutchinson advocated an upward revision of the dues "believing it necessary that the Institute have a larger income, in order that it may carry on necessary work and render adequate service to its membership." Since this is a matter that directly affects every member, .President Taylor was directed to appoint a committee, which he did, consisting of George D. Barron, W. H. Bassett, and R. H. Sweetser, with T. T. Read as secre- tary, to bring in a tentative outline of the main factors in the problem for discussion at the annual meeting, on Feb. 15, and to prepare, after they have had the benefit of the discussion at that meeting, a report for the board. The amount of the annual dues is fixed by the con- stitution and can only be changed by proposing an amendment to the constitution. This amendment would have to be submitted to the members by letter ballot at the time of the election of officers for 1928, so that no change can be made in the dues for 1927 in any case. WHY THE INSTITUTE NEEDS MONEY At the annual meeting past-president Reynders, as chairman of the executive committee made the follow-ing report, which since it admirably sets forth the rea-sons why an increase in the dues has been suggested, is included here. "The report of the president has covered the situation so fully that little is left for me to say. However, a word in regard to the functions of the executive com-mittee may not be out of place.

PRIOR to 1938, proration procedure in Kansas required the physical testing of wells in order to set up a basis for allocating production. Subsequently the use of liquid-level data and bottom-hole pressure data was authorized on certain types of wells as a basis for calculating well capacities, thereby permitting wells to be tested at low rates and with small volumes of production. This paper gives some attention to the equipment used for obtaining liquid-level data but in general it is devoted to the theoretical and physical factors involved in well testing by drawdown methods. These tests are divided into two classifications: (1) liquid-level data used directly to calculate capacities, and (2) liquid-level data and liquid-level measuring equipment used in connection with other data to determine bottom-hole pressure. Equations and calculations for both types of tests are shown. Well capacities calculated from fill-up data have not been used generally but offer a simple means of testing some wells. Theoretical factors and calculations for such tests are shown. IN the state of Kansas, proration laws required that the "ability of a well to produce" be given consideration in state allocation orders and for many years this was the only factor used in prorating the allowed oil. The "ability of a well to produce" was the quantity of oil that could be obtained from a well in a prescribed period, usually 24 hr. Early in the history of State-regulated proration, Kansas operators realized that, unless some restriction were placed upon equipment, the competition between producers to obtain large well "potentials" might result in a race to install the largest pumping equipment. Consequently, restrictions were placed upon the size of tubing and length of pump stroke that could be used in pumping wells during potential tests. Later, restrictions were placed also upon the size of tubing and chokes that could be used in flowing walls. Despite the restriction set-up, better pumping equipment was designed and installed, pumps were improved, and various devices were invoked to obtain high rates of production for short periods of time. By 1937 pumping cycles of forty to forty-five 54-in. strokes per minute were not uncommon, and numerous wells had produced at the rate of 3500 bbl. per day for short periods. Such production was far beyond any rate that could be long sustained. Equipment necessary to take "potentials" was several times larger than that needed for normal producing purposes, and repairs and replacements required by the high pumping speeds were excessive. Also, many operators were beginning to suspect that the high rates of production maintained during "potential" tests were conducive to early water encroachment. By 1938 large-scale physical testing of wells in Kansas ended, the use of the bottom-hole pressure gauge had become common, engineers and operators were becoming familiar with the term "productivity index," and bottom-hole pressure was being used as a factor in allocation in many areas. The superconducting performmce of diffusion-processed Nb3Sn is influenced by its micro structure. High isotropic transverse current density may be achieved in this material by a process which forms a precipitate of ZrO, within the Nb3Sn. FOR an ideal type-I1 superconductor, little or no transport current can be carried in the mixed state; i.e., little or no transport current can be carried above the lower critical field H,,, where the field penetrates abruptly in the form of current vortices or fluxoids, even though full transition to the normal state does not occur until the upper critical field H,,.' Fortunately, nonideal type-I1 superconductors can be readily obtained and these carry large transport currents up to the upper critical field H. Both theoretical and experimental investigations have attributed this current-carrying capability for nonideal type-I1 superconductors to pinning of the fluxoid lattice by heterogeneities in the microstructure of the superconducting material. These heterogeneities may take the form of dislocations or dislocation clusters,2"5 grain boundaries: structural imperfections introduced by phase transformations; radiation damage,8"10 or precipitates.11"15 Nb3Sn formed by diffusion processing is a type-I1 superconductor. Heterogeneities are needed for high superconducting critical currents above H,,. This paper will cover: a) what the microstructure of diffusion-processed NbSn looks like; b) what changes in the microstructure take place when the system is doped with precipitates, and c) how these changes in microstructure influence the superconducting critical currents. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Samples. Diffusion processing was used to form the Nb3Sn. The procedure used was as follows: a) coat the surface of a niobium tape with tin; b) heat-treat this tape at a temperature above 930°C to form a layer of Nb3Sn at the Sn-Nb interface. Such a layer of NbsSn is shown in Fig. 1 The thickness of the NbsSn layer formed was controlled by the time and temperature of the heat treatment. The same general procedure was used for preparation of both undoped samples and samples doped with a precipitate. An additional step was included in the preparation of the doped samples which consisted of internal oxidation of zirconium to form ZrOn. The details of the doping process will be reported in a later paper. Sample Testing. The Nb3Sn tape samples were soldered to a copper or brass shunt. Current and voltage leads were then attached to the sample in the usual four-probe resistance measurement configuration. The sample was cooled to 42°K. In some cases it was cooled in the presence of a high magnetic field and in other cases with the field turned off. The results were the same for both cases. The samples were oriented in a configuration with field transverse to current but could be rotated such that the angle between the field vector and the wide side of the tape sample could be changed. Measurements up to 100 kG were done in a superconducting solenoid and measurements above 100 kG in a water-cooled copper magnet at the MIT National Magnet Laboratory. Once the test field was reached, the current in the sample was increased until voltage was detected across the sample. The critical current was taken as the current at which voltage was first detected in excess of background noise. In most cases this was 1 to 2 x 10~6 v for a— in.-wide sample carrying several hundred amperes with a in. separation between voltage leads and with a 10 "-ohm shunt resistance. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Microstructure. Examination of the microstructure of the undoped Nb3Sn shows rather large-diameter (1 to 2 columnar grains growing outward from the niobium surface toward the tin surface. As the layer is made thicker by longer diffusion times, these grains grow longer. Few new grains are started. Transmission electron microscopy shows little or no second-phase material within the bulk of the Nb3Sn layer. The microstructure of a diffusion-processed NbsSn layer changes quite drastically when the system is doped so as to form a precipitate within the NbsSn layer. Instead of large-diameter columnar grains of NbaSn forming, smaller-diameter (0.5 to 1 ) equiaxed grains of Nb3Sn decorated with the precipitate form. UPON the death of its founder, Phelps, Dodge & Co. entered upon a new chapter in its long and varied history. Thereafter, for nearly a decade, William E. Dodge largely determined and executed the policies of the company. The old firm, dissolved automatically by Phelps's death, was succeeded by a new partnership consisting of Anson G. Phelps, Jr., William E. Dodge, Daniel James, James Stokes, William E. Dodge, Jr., and D. Willis James, one of the three sons of Daniel James. Each of the first three partners owned a twenty-five-per-cent interest in the company, Stokes had a fifteen-per-cent interest, and the two younger partners each held five per cent. The new company bought Anson Phelps's holdings in the old firm from Olivia Phelps, his widow and executrix, for approximately seven hundred thousand dollars; but the new partnership, designed by agreement to last the usual five-year period, was brought to an end shortly before that time by the death of the younger Anson Phelps from small- pox. THERE has been very little, if any, uniformity in the reference datum used for magnetometer surveys. It has been the practice to choose a base station at which the magnetic field is assumed to be normal and call the difference in field strength between a given station and this base the anomaly at the given station. For small-scale surveys latitude and longitude corrections may or may not be applied, but for large-scale surveys such corrections usually are applied. The United States Coast and Geodetic Survey maps showing lines of equal magnetic intensity are commonly used to determine the normal latitude and longitude variation by scaling values from the map for given points and computing the change per mile north and the change per mile east. This method has been quite satisfactory for isolated surveys, but when two surveys originating at different base stations were extended until they joined, difficulty arose, not only because of discrepancies between base-station values, but also because of differences between the latitude and longitude correction factors used for the separate surveys. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a reference datum for magnetometer surveys which, it is believed, will eliminate most of the difficulty arising from this source. In order to be satisfactory, a general datum for magnetometer sur-veys should be as close as possible to the observed field and still he based on some assumed distribution of magnet poles, in order that the "normal" value of any component of the field for any given point may be computed to as many significant figures as desired. Such a field has been com-puted, and a comparison of the intensity of its vertical component with the average vertical intensity for the United States as shown by the U.S.C.G.S. map of lines of equal intensity for 1935 is shown in Fig. 1.

PRoduction engineering in 1927 may be characterized by a great. clarification of fundamental conceptions, and many improvements in technique. During the year the profession has received tnarked recogni-tion by the industry and to an extent never before attained has become an integral part of it. History Petroleum production engineering is a new profession. Prior to 1925, when this Institute undertook the work, no forum existed for the open discussion of its technical problems. There was no attempt at a handbook of the subject prior to "Petroleum Production Methods by J. R. Suman, in 1921, and no textbook prior to Petroleum Production Engineering" by L. C. Uren, in 1924. As late as 1926, only six schools and universities offered special courses in petroleum production engineering. Prior to about 1923, engineers engaged by oil companies were used almost exclusively for construction and location work. Two of the leading production engineers in the Mid-Continent field, although with their respective companies more than twelve years, were not definitely assigned to production work until 1924. Both men now head large departments giving almost their entire time to production problems. Because of the newness of the profession, the leading production engineers of today have had their fundamental training in mining, civil, mechanical and electrical courses. Not unlikely this diversified training is in considerable part responsible for the amazing growth of the profession. I believe, however, that recognition is due principally to economic pressure within the industry which has directed attention more and more sharply on costs and efficiency. After all, the justification for the growth and continued development, of the profession is to recover more oil from a given unit of sand at less cost per barrel. In this new profession, it seems to me that greatest progress will result from focusing thought and effort on this single objective, and if I might offer one suggestion to the com-

A mathematical tnodel of forward combustion in an oil reservoir is treated in this paper. The model describes a radial system having a vertical section of essentially infinite thickness, all of which is permeable to gas flow. Combustion, however, is presumed initiated over a limited thickness of the total vertical section. In the interval supporting cotnbustion, the mechanisms of radial conduction, convection and heat generation are taken into account. Above and below the burning interval, heat transport in the radial direction is by cottduction and convection. Vertical heat losses from the ignited interval are accounted for by conduction alone. A general solution is presented for the temperature distribution caused by radial movement of the combustion front. The results show that no feedback of heat occurs into the ignited interval when convection and conduction are acting in the bounding media. Peak temperatures are also 5 to 10 per cent higher than in the case where heat transport in the bounding media is by conduction alone. We arbitrarily define vertical coverage to be that fraction of the total ignited interval which is at 600F above atnbient, or greater, at any given time. The radial distance at which the vertical coverage becomes zero is the propagation range of the combustion front. It was found that an increase in vertical coverage results when the oxygen concentration, fuel concentration or gas-injection rate is increased. Moreover, the combustion front can be propagated 10 to 15 per cent further than in the case where only conduction is acting above and below the ignited interval. INTRODUCTION In the theoretical treatment of forward combustion in a radial system, one of the problems encountered is the determination of the transient temperature distributions caused by an expanding cylindrical heat source. Bailey and Larkin' and Ramey' simultaneously presented analytical solutions to the problem assuming heat transport by conduction alone. In a subsequent publication, Bailey and Larkin3 included the effects of both conduction and convection while treating linear and radial models. In this latter work, however, vertical heat losses were largely neglected. Selig and Couch' dealt with a radial model in which both conduction and convection were acting. Only a limiting case involving vertical heat losses was considered, however. Namely, temperatures on the boundary of the bed of interest were set equal to zero. Solutions thus obtained were representative of a system having a maximum vertical heat flux. Chu5 recently treated a more general case in which a permeable bed was considered bounded by impermeable media. Conduction and convection took place within the bed, and only conduction outside of the bed. The effects of vertical heat losses were included in his study. Solutions were obtained by numerical techniques. This paper is an extension of the theoretical work of other authors pertaining to forward combustion in a radial system. In particular, a mathematical model of the process is treated in which heat generation occurs over a small vertical interval of a larger permeable section. In the interval supporting heat generation, and above and below this interval, the mechanisms of radial conduction and convection are also presumed acting. Heat losses from the ignited interval are accounted for by vertical conduction. An analytical solution for the temperature distribution caused by radial movement of the burning front is presented. The effects of certain process variables are indicated and comparisons with Chu's results are made. THEORY To render the mechanism of forward combustion tractable to mathematical treatment, we idealize the problem to the extent of assuming continuous reservoir media possessing homogeneous and isotropic properties. The following additional assumptions are implicit in this analysis. 1. The thermal parameters, i.e., heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities are invariant with temperature and pressure. Moreover, the bounding media possess the same thermal properties as the bed of interest. 2. The temperatures of the porous media and its contained fluids at any point and at any time are equal. 3. The reaction rate between the oxidant gas and the fuel is infinite. This assumption implies that the incoming oxygen concentration instantaneously goes to zero within an infinitesimal distance, i.e., the width of the combustion zone is negligible. 4. The rate of gas injection is constant and corresponds to the average rate throughout the lifetime of the project. 5. The fuel concentration is constant throughout the volume of rock swept out by the burning zone. 6. There is complete burnoff of fuel. This assumption demands that the rate of propagation of the burning front equals the rate of fuel burnoff. In a radial system, with a

THERE have been many attempts to prove that platinum was known to the ancients, but since no traces of the metal have been found in the relics of early times, it must be concluded that it was not known to them. As far as records go, it was actually first discovered in the 16th century in a Spanish mine on the Pinto River in South America; from which source it received its name of Platina del Pinto (little silver from the Pinto). It was more or less of a rarity and was a subject of interest to a few chemists only, until the year 1822 when the metal was first discovered in Russia. In 1819 there were noticed in the washings of the gold sands of the southern part of the Ural Mountains, grains of a heavy white substance, but it was not until three years later that this substance was found to contain platinum. While at first the amounts of platinum brought from the Urals were meager, prospecting soon disclosed rich deposits extending over a considerable area, and nuggets from 10 to 20 lb. were by no means rare. This discovery assured to chemists an ample supply of platinum for their crucibles, etc. The ore is now found in various parts of the world but the richest deposits are still found in the Ural Mountains. The platinum of commerce is obtained entirely from alluvial deposits at depths varying from 6 to 40 ft. The sand and gravel of former river beds are subjected to a series of screenings and washings to effect the separation of the ore. Actually, probably all gold-bearing gravel beds of the world contain platinum, and it is more than likely that large quantities of platinum ore have been thrown away with the black sand washings from gold placer deposits. This is especially true of the alluvial deposits of the Pacific Coast in California and Oregon. Platinum ore is usually found in the form of rounded or flattened grains of "sand," and occasionally in irregular lumps of the size of peas. Large nuggets are very rare. The ore has a metallic luster and is distinguished by its steel gray color, but shows light gray streak when rubbed on a hard white surface; it has a high specific gravity, 16 to 19; is infusible in the hottest blast furnaces, and insoluble in any single acid. Extensive studies have been carried out on electric furnace and blast furnace slags obtained in the winning of iron from its ores. These slags normally consist of elements of the gangue minerals present in the ores, as well as the added flux materials. In consequence, melts of CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2 can be considered as representing typical slag compositions. When a slag of this composition cools, it usually crystallizes according to predictions possible from an equilibrium diagram of these constituents, providing the melt is not undercooled to form glass. The melt is either viscous or fluid, depending upon the ratio of binary cations to silica, and crystallizes easily or forms a glass for the same reasons. If the melt is not overheated so that carbides of the metal components of the slag are formed and if the composition of the slag is so adjusted that it has a high fluidity, liquid equilibrium is attained and the slag can be held in a liquid state for extended periods of time. Upon tapping, the slag crystallizes into minerals, the type and proportion of which are determined by the melt composition. Since equilibrium is attained, the holding period is not critical. In melts containing a large increment of titanium, however, the normal slag procedures are not applicable. Titanium, as one of the atomic transition elements, is, at elevated temperatures, capable of being reduced to form metalloid compounds much more readily than the refractory oxides present in normal slags. In consequence, an oxide melt containing titanium never reaches equilibrium in a reducing environment, but continues to shift its composition until cooled. If melts of this nature are cooled and samples submitted to metal-lographic and X ray analysis the course of reaction and crystallization in this type of slag can be determined. Preparation of Slag The slags investigated fell into the system CaO-MgO-TiO2-Al2O3-SiO2 and were produced from ilmenite ores reduced by carbon in an electric furnace. Since the equilibrium series1 and the laboratory smelting of ilmenite2 are described in two of the accompanying papers, detailed description of the smelting procedure is not required here. However, certain essentials must be mentioned. Two types of melts were used to produce slags studied in this investigation. The first series of smelts made to determine proper flux addition were produced in a 4 lb Ajax induction furnace. The charge, consisting of ore with the proper flux addition, was heated in a graphite crucible until fluid, held fluid for a sufficient time period to obtain 1-5 pct FeO content, and poured. Because of the small size of the charge only the final sample of these melts could be examined. In the melts made in the 50 lb arc furnace, however, grab samples taken at 10 min. intervals between time of initial melting and final pouring were available for examination. These samples allowed a much clearer picture of the course of reaction and crystallization. amounts of ferrous oxide and reduced titanium compounds is opaque to transmitted light. Therefore, all petro-graphic studies had to be made on polished slag sections. A representative sample of slag was cut or broken, mounted in a thermosetting plastic, ground flat using 400 grit silicon carbide, the coarse scratches removed with 600 grit silicon carbide and polished on billiard cloth using levigated alumina. Rouge was avoided because of the entrainment of the red particles in pores in the slag, causing a possible confusion with some of the mineral phases. In order to prevent sample projection above the plastic surface red bakelite was used to hold the sample, and backed up with clear lucite. In this manner sample labels could be permanently retained in the mounting. The polished samples were examined on a Bausch and Lomb metallograph at magnifications of 250 X, 500 X, 1000 X and 1800 X. The instrument was equipped for examination of specimens under bright field illumination and with crossed nicols. A magenta tint plate to aid in color tone differentiation was also used. Petrology of Slags In order to determine the composition and mineral relatinos of a previously unreported system petrologically, it is essential that the starting composition, reaction temperature and final composition be known. The chemical composition of the ilmenite ore used in these smelts is given in Table 1, and the complete analysis of a typical high titanium, low iron slag is given in Table 2. In the winning of TiO2 from ilmenite by a smelting process it is necessary to produce a slag which will melt at an economically feasible temperature, remain molten as the iron is removed by reduction, be fluid enough to be readily removed from the furnace, contain a high percentage of TiO2 and a low percentage of reduced titanium com-
