No symposium on die casting could be complete without consideration of the methods of formula and impurity control. No consideration of control would be complete without discussion of that new tool of the analytical chemist and inspector, the quartz spectrograph. Just as there is an increased appreciation of the possible applications of the die-casting process and of die castings, so too is there, slowly but surely, of the spectrograph. At present the role of the instrument might well be compared with that of brass or magnesium die castings. Neither is as widely understood or known as they will be. Product specifications are increasing and are getting more explicit and often more rigid. The designer, metallurgist and production engineer or superintendent will be forced to depend more and more on the chemical laboratory. Sampling, as well as analyses, testing and inspection problems will grow. The chemical laboratory must meet its increased responsibility and use of the spectrograph will become more common. Advantages of increased precision, greater speed, lessened labor and often lower costs cannot be ignored. It will be the purpose of this paper in part to outline the respective fields of chemical and spectrographic analyses and to indicate where one may overlap the other and in part to indicate certain possible sources of contamination of zinc-base die-cast alloys in particular. The portion of the Nb-Sn phase diagram between 75 and 79 at. pct Nb at temperatures near the liquidus has been investigated by melting alloys of known composition and examining the microstmc-tzlres resulting when these melts were quenched. The Nb-Sn samples were contained in magnesia sleeves, and were mounted in a high-pressure apparatus. It was shown that Nb3Sn me1ts by a peri-tectic decomposition and that the composition of the compound Nb3Sn at the peritectic horizontal lies between 77 and 78 at. pct Nb. Analysis of the phases present in the samples was accomplished by anodic staining techniques and an electron-microbeam analyzer. DURING the past several years a great deal of work has been devoted to the Nb-Sn system, and the bulk of this work has been primarily concerned with the intermetallic phase Nb3Sn. However, the melting characteristics of Nb3Sn have not been investigated because of the difficulty in maintaining known compositions due to tin losses by vaporization, and the added difficulty of containing Nb-Sn alloys without sample-container reaction at the high temperatures involved. This paper reports on the development of a technique for containing Nb-Sn alloys under pressure high enough to prevent tin losses at temperatures in excess of the liquidus. Using this technique, melts of known composition were made and a phase diagram near the liquidus is proposed based on the microstructures resulting when these melts were quenched. EXPERIMENTAL The Nb-Sn alloys weighing 0.7 g each were prepared in the form of cylinders. Niobium powder, -200, +325 mesh, and tin shavings with a minute amount of tin powder for a binder were mixed in the desired proportions and cold-pressed at 50,000 psi in a 0.150-in. die. This cylinder was then enclosed as shown in Fig. 1, and the entire arrangement mounted in a 2.6-in. pyrophyllite tetrahedron.' The desired temperatures (-2500°C) presented several problems in high-pressure container materials. Boron nitride, the usual sample holder, was found to react with niobium to form the nitride. However, MgO cans and plugs machined from refractory rods did not melt nor react with the sample. Thick tantalum contact disks were used to carry the large currents (~450 amps) to the graphite heater, since tantalum did not melt and had enough strength to prevent extrusion of the sample. It was further observed that the graphite heater and tantalum disks could not be in direct contact with the pyrophyllite because it melts and decomposes at these temperatures to kyanite and coesite (SiO2),2 the former reacting with graphite and the latter with tantalum to form the silicide. When he was a child his family came to the United States from Latvia and settled in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where he went to school and on to Michigan College of Mines. Graduating with B.S. and E.M. degrees, he headed west in 1907 to the mining camp of Ophir, in the state where he spent the bulk of his career - Utah.

Data were obtained with hematite with octyl hydroxamate and oleate as collectors to determine the mechanism of collector adsorption and also to establish the roles that conditioning time and temperature assume in this system. The presence of hydroxy complexes of iron are apparently necessary for chemisorption of collector to occur, and it appears as if extended conditioning times and elevated temperature promote greater dissolution of the mineral and hence greater concentrations of hydroxy complexes. Data were also collected with two natural hematitic ores. With one ore that was ground to 70% - 15u, an addition of 0.4 lb per ton hydrox-amate resulted in a final concentrate recovery of 86% at a grade of 64% iron. Satisfactory concentrate grade could not be obtained with fatty acid under these conditions. The effect of conditioning time prior to the addition of collector was also examined with another ore. When the ore was conditioned for 3 min, 19% of the iron was recovered in the concentrate at a grade of 67% Fe. With a conditioning time of 7 min, 73% of the iron reported to the concentrate at a grade of 62% Fe. These products were obtained with an addition of 0.2 lb per ton hydroxamate. This ore also responded well to flotation with fatty acid. The use of potassium octyl hydroxamate as a collector for iron oxide has been the subject of an earlier study.1 From this initial study, it was suspected that hydrolysis of surface ferric iron was involved in collector adsorption. More recent work in other systems has shown that slight mineral dissolution, followed by hydrolysis of cations common to the mineral lattice, is apparently necessary, and that adsorption of these hydroxy com- plexes probably occurs prior to the adsorption of collector. In view of these facts, work has been continued on the hydroxamate-hematite and oleate-hematite systems to gain better insight into the mechanisms of collector adsorption on iron oxide. Microflotation experiments in conjunction with infrared analysis were used in this regard. In addition it was felt necessary to establish more clearly the responses that can be obtained from natural ores when hydroxamate is used as collector as compared to those obtained when fatty acid is used. The conversion of a successful research and development effort into a money-making business venture requires careful attention. Problems of a business nature, such as market size, product selling price, raw materials and fuel availability and cost, financing factors, local and national taxes, licensing arrangements, etc. must, of course, be considered and resolved. In addition, the technical questions involving the scale-up of pilot plant or laboratory results to the full-scale plant must be resolved in order to avoid the financial disaster that attends a major delay in the startup of a commercial facility. The very difficult and demanding task of providing the interface between the research laboratory and the profitable metals processing plant will be discussed with examples from the author's extensive experience. After I had accepted the invitation to present a paper on the above subject of the interface between R & D and production operations, I began to give some serious thought to the subject. The program chairman had told me, in conveying the invitation, that what the committee had in mind was a discussion of positive and negative, forces in that interface, based on "gray-hair" experience. I am, therefore, at least physically qualified! My first reaction was one of mild shock; after over twenty years in the direct pursuit of the conversion of research and development findings into plant operations, I had never tried to sort out my , experience into a formal system of DO'S and DON'TS for the edification of posterity. However, after a little further reflection, I realized that this carries no stigma. No one has been able to formulate such a set of rules, and it is not really very likely to be done. Particularly if they are to be practical. I shall therefore settle for a more modest goal; I will simply discuss the factors that I have come to believe are the most critical in insuring that re- search and development results are converted into successful operation.

There are comparatively few accurate data on the melting-or the freezing-point temperature of metallurgical slags, or on related physical phenomena, such as fluidity near the melting-point, specific heat, latent heat, etc. With the exception of the work of H. 0. Hofman,' and some older work by R. Akerman, P. Gredt, and H. M. Howe, no information is available that is of direct interest to the metallurgist. Hofman's valuable work is the only one that refers to slags produced in the metallurgy of copper and lead. The classic work of J. H. L. Vogt,2 who views slags from the standpoint of physical mixtures (solutions in which the entities are minerals), has opened up a new field in the study of slags, and has placed the investigation of such properties as melting-temperatures, etc., on a rational basis. The recent work of A. L. Day, E. T. Allen, and W. I?. White, of the Carnegie Institution, at Washington, and of European investigators3 on certain systems of silicate minerals confirms the value of the investigation of silicate series from this standpoint, and it is my aim to apply this method to metallurgical slags, in order to gain exact data of value in metallurgy. The work recorded in the present paper is the result of an investigation of reverberatory-furnace slags made for a Western smelting company to determine exactly the influence of change in composition, within comparatively narrow limits, on the melting-point. For a general discussion concerning the mineralogical character of slags and the principles on which this investigation is based, reference should be made to other work: for the subject is too large to be stated in this paper, except very briefly in the following outline:

BECAUSE of the impetus given to placer mining since the price of gold was advanced to $35, several types of small dredges have made their appearance, especially in the Lincoln and Oroville areas of California. Some of these are known as "doodle bugs," and have been given considerable publicity, though many believe their performance has been overrated and that complete costs of construction and operation, if known would not put them in so favorable a light. Fig. 1 is a doodle bug owned by E. M. Clark and operated near Lincoln, Calif. It is understood that it was abandoned because of inability to handle deep ground. A similar machine that has been operated-profitably by Comstock Placers is shown in Fig. 2.

These days of great industrial and social problems in America produce many suggested solutions and great changes. The practical engineer and employer of labor views these problems differently from the labor leader or the social reformer, but as never before he is sincerely interested in solving them in a way that will be just to all. The inevitable tendency of the day is toward "industrial betterment," " safety," '(industrial education," " efficiency," and the many other things which have become so familiar to progressive employers. There is no longer any question that these things are worth while from both the human and economic standpoints. They "pay" in dollars and cents. The very center of final success in improving conditions and increasing the efficiency of workingmen must be the spirit of fairness and a knowledge on the part of the employer of how to deal sympathetically and intelligently with his employees. Every progressive employer knows how greatly he desires foremen, superintendents, managers and others who possess these qualities. On the other hand, we are all familiar with serious mistakes made by young graduates of engineering schools who have had no opportunity to develop these qualities, and who have no real appreciation of the worth of the workers. Indeed, one wonders whether much ill-feeling, labor difficulties, and many strikes could not be avoided if such men had the right attitude. Is there any way of remedying this condition? If this particular difficulty can be solved, if these young engineers, many of whom are our coming leaders of industry, can be given the right perspective and the right understanding of these other problems in addition to fair, sympathetic methods of handling men, many of our other problems will be solved—not at once, but gradually and permanently, as these men make good and become influential in paths of industrial righteousness and industrial peace. Many progressive employers of to-day have enlarged their own perspective and realize the great importance of enlarging the perspective of those who shall follow them. How can it be done? The recovery and recrystallization characteristics of superpurity aluminum have been investigated using electrical resistivity, X-ray line breadth, and hardness measurements for the former and the micrographic method for the latter. The three different properties recover at different rates and have different activation energies. The recrystallization results agree well with Avrami&apos;s theory and furthermore indicate that the perfect subgrains formed during recovery are not the nuclei for re-crystallization. WHEN a metal is plastically deformed, its physical and mechanical properties generally undergo considerable changes and by subsequent annealing these changes are partly or wholly annihilated. Thus, a recovery process can be discussed, taking this term in its general sense. In practice, however, there is reason to discriminate between two apparently different processes, one most easily followed at low temperatures, in which the properties return to an almost constant value between that of the cold worked and fully annealed material, and a second process in which the properties return to their original values before cold working and which is accompanied by the formation and growth of new grains having an orientation different from that of the matrix. In this paper the word recovery will be taken to mean the changes in some property as a function of annealing time which occur either without the appearance of new grains or under conditions such that the new re-crystallized grains are very small (= 2 microns), are very few in number, and substantially do not affect the property being measured. This definition is rather abitrary, for it will depend upon the sensitivity of the technique used for the observation of new recrystallized grains, which in the present work was about 1 to 2 microns. However, it is helpful to use the term recovery in this sense and to reserve the term recrystallization for the processes of nucle-ation and growth of new grains in the cold worked matrix. Although considerable work has been done on recovery and recrystallization, most workers have based their study on the measurement of one or perhaps two parameters. Since very small amounts of impurities have such a profound effect on the recrystallization characteristics of a pure metal, it becomes extremely difficult to correlate one piece of work with another. With this in mind, the present work on recovery and recrystallization was done on the same material. Experimental Procedure Material Used and Fabrication: The composition of the superpurity aluminum used throughout this investigation was 0.002 pct Cu, 0.003 pct Fe, 0.003 pct Si, and <0.001 pct Mg. The ingot was hot rolled to 0.250 in., annealed, and cold rolled to 0.034 in. A large number of reductions and intermediate anneals were carried out so as to produce material with a minimum of preferred orientation and maximum homogeneity. For the recovery part of the investigation, the final cold reduction was 20 and 80 pct and for the recrystallization part, 20 pct. After each pass in the cold rolling process, the material was quenched in cold water in order to keep the rolling temperature as near room temperature as possible. Annealing Procedure: For the recrystallization work, specimens 1x1 in. were cut from the 0.034 in. cold rolled sheet and a hole was drilled in each through which a wire was threaded to support it in the salt bath. The temperature of the salt bath was controlled to +2°C and the time taken for a specimen to reach temperature was approximately 5 sec. These 1 in. squares were then divided into three groups, one of which was given 5 min at 318°C and another 2 hr at 244°C. These treatments were such that recovery was almost complete and a well defined subgrain structure produced. Separate specimens of each group were annealed for different times at 301°, 318°, 355°, and 373°C, i.e., three specimens for each annealing time. The delay between finish of cold working and start of annealing was about 1 hr. For the recovery work, strips 0.062 in. thick were cut from the cold worked sheet, annealed, and then given the last cold rolling operation. This was done for each annealing temperature. By this means it was possible to minimize the delay between cold working and annealing. In general, all measurements were carried out within 1 hr of the last cold rolling operation. Annealing at low temperatures was done in an oil bath the temperature of which was maintained constant to +1°C. Electrical Resistivity Measurements: Strips 20x0.5x0.05 in. were machined and the electrical resistance measured using a Kelvin double bridge. Measurements were made in an oil bath maintained at 20rt0.1°C. The same specimen was used for the complete isothermal annealing curve.

Although this is going to appear in the December Issue of &E, it is being written long before the end of the year. December, of course, is the time for a summing up of the year&apos;s activities. Perhaps, the best way to begin is to report on what went on at the SME Board of Directors Meeting in St. Louis on October 20. This won&apos;t be a chronological report, and I shall take time to comment on some of the items we cover as we go along. You should be encouraged to know that your Directors take their duties seriously. Of the 21 current Directors, 19 were present, and three of the new 1971 Directors came to observe what goes on at an SME Board Meeting.

EL Salvador mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., E subsidiary of Anaconda Co., is in northern Chile about 18 miles north of Potrerillos, 7825 ft above sea level. Initial production is planned for the first half of 1959. Plant capacity will be 30,000 tpd, and there are 308,835,000 tons of proven ore reserves, averaging 1.49 pct Cu. The Inca adit is being driven as part of the mine-to-mill haulageway. Because of the overburden it is planned to mine the deposit by block caving. Ore will be dropped from upper gathering levels through ore passes to the Inca adit, through which it will be transported out of the mine to the primary crushing plant located a half mile from the portal.

The electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Xochendorffer and others.&apos; The write of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray tc white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (Sic) and graphite (C). In this work, he found the curious phenomenon of barium carbonate.

With the development of open-pit mines of ever increasing depth, the stability of the pit slopes in soil and rock is of growing economic importance. How is it, considering the newness of the problem that we know anything at all about the stability of man-made slopes? How much do we know and how did it all begin? We can make a reasonable estimate of the stability of a slope in soil, but we know as yet woefully little about slopes in rock because the problem is much more complex. It is only with the development of the capacity of the computer to handle wearisome calculations that any but the simplest of stability problems in rock have become possible of solution. But what we do know is a guide of immense value in the design of slopes in rock. But remember that the computer is a great elevator; it takes everyone&apos;s feet off the ground! So our study began with soils and what is now known as "Soil Mechanics", which is a translation of the German term "Bodenmechanik". It is a pity that the title of Terzaghi&apos;s book "Erdbaumechanik" was not used instead. But here the task of the translator is difficult because English lacks the facility of German to string together several words and make a new one whose meaning is unequivocal. Thus, we have the three German words &apos;Erde&apos; &apos;Bau&apos; and &apos;Mechanik&apos;. &apos;Erde&apos; means "earth" in almost all the English senses including "soil". &apos;Bau&apos; and &apos;bauen&apos; convey the meaning of building and construction, and &apos;Mechanik&apos; means "mechanics" which includes statics and dynamics and the &apos;mechanics of materials&apos;, etc. So that a correct translation of the German is a phrase like "the mechanics of construction with, in or on, earth or soil." However we are stuck with &apos;Soil Mechanics&apos; and that is where it all began. Now this study or subject did not begin with &apos;Terzaghi&apos; although his contribution to the subject is unquestionably greater than that of any other single person. Every scientific discipline has its &apos;classical problem&apos; and that of soil mechanics is &apos;the earth pressure problem&apos; and it began in the 17th century. In fact, it probably began before this with the introduction of gunpowder to Western Europe in about the 15th century, but the first known reference to the problem was by Vauban, a distinguished French military engineer who lived from 1633 to 1707 and who gave rules for the dimensions of retaining walls from 6 to 80 ft. in height. The soil properties were not mentioned by Vauban probably because the rules were intended to be applied to fortifications only, but Poncelet (1840) claimed that Vauban&apos;s rules were based on a theory, and not simply on military and practical

X-ray experiments were carried out to show the occurrence of cylindrical texture in drawn tungsten wire. Only a small amount of (110) (110) cylindrical texture could he found in wires of intermediate thickness, i.e., of about 1.5 mm diameter. DRAWN wires of tungsten and other bcc metals like iron and molybdenum show a well-established (110) fiber texture. Now it might be conceivable that in drawing radial stresses remove the randomness of the crystallites around the [110} axis, thus giving a fiber texture of higher symmetry. In the resulting so-called cylindrical textures a specified plane normal coincides with the radius of the wire. Several authors discuss the occurrence of cylindrical textures in bcc metals. ~ieck&apos; found no cylindrical texture in drawn tungsten wires of 165 n diameter. Leber~ states that in tungsten wires of 3 mm diameter a cylindrical {100)(110) texture is developed, which is gradually converted to a normal fiber texture by subsequent drawing. He also reported a definite cylindrical texture at the surface of iron wires. Peck and Thomas3 observed a nonuniform mode of deformation of the grains in transverse sections of heavily drawn tungsten and iron wires. According to Bhandary and cullity4 a swaged iron wire has neither a perfect (110) fiber texture nor a perfect {100}(110) cylindrical texture. It is clear that the concept of cylindrical texture in bcc metals still lacks a firm experimental basis. Leber&apos;s eviden~e,~ which seems to be the strongest, rests upon qualitative interpretation of photographs. The appearance of the 110 and 200 lines on the photograph of 3-mm wire, however, can be very well attributed5 to a normal ( 110) fiber texture superimposed on random background; our Fig. 1, giving a Debye-Scherrer diagram of etched tungsten wire of 180 p, is free of cylindrical texture according to all authors, but is quite similar to Leber&apos;s diagram. It was therefore decided to use a different method of X-ray texture determination on tungsten wires of diameters where cylindrical textures may be expected.

Within the last year or so, a great deal has been heard about Southern iron ; even the Eastern markets have felt the effect of the cheap Alabama ores and coals, and public attention has again been drawn to what is now getting to be an old story—the great mineral wealth of the South. The following paper is based on a report prepared several years ago for a special purpose; but since then, through association with Mr. C. B. Going in a large analytical practice and as chemists to the Queen and Crescent Railway, I have had opportunity to increase my material so greatly that the present paper is really a completely different work. I am under very great obligation to Mr. Going, without whose assistance my work would have been very incomplete, and have also been materially assisted by Mr. F. P. Dewey, of Washington, and a host of gentlemen connected with the railroads and furnaces of the South. The arrangement of this paper is not all that could be desired. Some localities of importance are very poorly represented, both in the description and the tables of analyses. This, however, was in most instances unavoidable, as the study has been done ill the intervals of professional work. Cykler, Secretary-Treasurer, informs us that the Engineering Societies Club of Hawaii has been established, and that a member of any one of the following organizations is eligible for membership in the Hawaiian club: American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Naval Engineers, American Railway Engineering Association, American Society for Testing Materials. The main purpose of this club is the entertainment of visitors from the various national organizations above mentioned, and the Secretary will be glad to hear from any one who is making a trip to the Hawaiian Islands.
