One of the advantages presented by electric drive in many classes of work is the ease with which the electric motor can be controlled automatically. In a large number of cases certain features of the control are automatic—for example, the rate of acceleration may be limited automatically or the equipment may be stopped automatically at the limit of travel—but the equipment is started and ordinarily is stopped by hand. In other cases the motion of the machinery is utilized to start, control the speed, and stop the motor automatically, independently of any operator. A considerable proportion of the large mine hoists now in use have certain automatic features, particularly protective devices against overwinding, and, in some classes of electric hoists, devices for preventing excessive acceleration or retardation. The large automatic hoists discussed in this paper, however, are completely automatic, i.e., capable of making their trips without the presence of an operator at the control levers. According to circumstances, various advantages may be obtained . by automatic control, chief of which are decreased power consumption, increased precision and safety of operation, and decreased cost of attendance. The first step in the analysis of a prospective automatic mine hoist is to determine whether automatic operation is feasible at all. If men are to be hoisted, or levels changed, the attention of an operator is required for these purposes; but under some conditions it may be entirely practicable and advantageous to build the equipment so that, while provision is made for hoisting men or changing levels, ore can be hoisted automatically from any one level. If, however, an operator's attention is required every few minutes for changing levels, handling men or drills, or other work requiring hand control, it is obvious that automatic operation between times will not be of any practical benefit.

THE most effective means of strengthening hot-rolled ferritic steels are grain refinement and precipitation hardening. It is well-known that grain refinement increases both the strength and the toughness. However, the upper limit of yield strength obtainable by grain refinement alone is about 60,000 psi,'12 i.e., without the formation of acicular structures of lower toughness. The most economical means of obtaining higher strengths is the addition of small amounts of elements such as columbium, vanadium, and titanium which form carbonitrides. These precipitates are very effective in increasing the strength, but the ductile-brittle transition temperature is is Although it is agreed upon that precipitation decreases the toughness, there has been little effort to isolate the causative aspects of embrittlement. The purposes of this research are to assess quantitatively the embrittlement associated with different precipitate distributions and morphologies, and to correlate the degree of the embrittlement with the microstruc-ture. In this manner, a more fundamental insight into the mechanism of embrittlement may be gained. The steel selected for this purpose was a low-carbon, columbium-bearing steel which, after solution treatment, was aged in various time-temperature cycles while attempting to hold all other microstructural variables constant. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The composition of the steel used in this investigation is given in Table I. Starting with commercially hot-rolled material 0.074 and 0.280 in. thick, tensile blanks were cut from the thinner material and sub-size Charpy blanks from the thicker stock. The steel had been rolled using a low finishing temperature and rapid cooling after hot rolling to produce grain refinement. Also, chemical-extraction analysis and electron-microscopic examination revealed that the cooling was rapid enough to suppress any significant precipitation of CbC. Therefore, the as-rolled steel is essentially in the solution-treated condition in terms of the precipitation reaction, and it was used as the base material in this investigation. The room-temperature tensile properties of the as-rolled steel aged at 1100", 1150", and 1200°F for various time intervals were determined, see Table 11. The ductile-brittle transition behavior was studied for smooth and notched tensile specimens, and longitudinal half-size (0.200 in. thick) Charpy V notch specimens aged at 1100" and 1150°F for various times, also Table 11. In addition, tensile specimens aged for single times at 1050" and 1200°F were evaluated with respect to their ductile-brittle transition. Only one 1050°F treatment was used because of the extremely slow kinetics of precipitation at this temperature and because no significant difference between 1100°F aging was observed. Only one treatment at 1200°F was used because aging at this temperature alters the shape of the grain boundary cementite particles present in this steel and complicates analysis. The design of the tensile specimens is given in Fig.1.

FROM the time of its organization down to 1917, a period of more than eighty years, Phelps, Dodge & Co. was seldom involved in what could be called a major labor difficulty. Behind this remarkable record lay both a philosophy and its practical application. The philosophy was an attitude toward society called the Golden Rule. That philosophy had been a living principle in the lives of the founders of the company, Anson Phelps, Daniel James, and William E. Dodge. Their successors, William E. Dodge, Jr., and Daniel Willis James, accepted the same philosophy. Dr. James Douglas governed his life by it. All of these men and their families had given tangible expression to that conviction in benefactions of great magnitude and variety-churches, hospitals, educational institutions, libraries, missionary undertakings, and other organizations for human betterment, such as the Young Men's and Young Women's Christian Associations, and the development of model communities about their mills and factories. In a previous paper,' The Behavior of Calcium Sulphate at Elevated Temperatures with Some Fluxes, we published the results of our investigation into the behavior of calcium sulphate in air; that is, under oxidizing conditions. The results as a whole hold good for a neutral atmosphere, or one which has no chemical effect upon calcium sulphate. The present paper deals with the behavior of calcium sulphate under reducing conditions, the reducing-agents employed being carbon monoxide and carbon, and the changes the calcium sulphide formed undergoes when it is subjected to an oxidizing-roast. Technical literature deals very sparingly with the subject. The information furnished by the recent leading chemical manuals is general. Thus Dammer,2 Missan,3 and Abegg4 quote Berthier as having reduced, in 1823, calcium sulphate with carbon, and Stammer as having done the same in 1851

The production of petroleum in New York state in 1942 amounted to 5,410,000 bbl. This represents an increase over each of the four preceding years, and, with the exception of 1937, is the largest production since the peak of over six million barrels in 1882, shortly after the discovery of oil in Allegany County. The oil industry in New York is virtually stabilized and there has been little or no exploration for new sources of supply in recent years. The boundaries of the present fields were established more than 30 years ago and since then no additional reserves have been found. Deep drilling for natural gas during the past 10 years both within and without the oil fields has failed to find oil in quantity below the present producing sands of Devonian age. Oil Since 1882, the New York fields have produced approximately 140 million barrels of oil. Of this amount, 65 million was produced up to the year 1919 by ordinary pumping methods; that is, without flooding by water or the use of other secondary-recovery methods. In the year 1919, when a law was passed making the use of water-flooding methods legal, the oil production, of the state amounted to only 851,000 bbl. In the 23 years since 1919, there have been produced in the state 75 million barrels, or 10 million more than in the previous 37 years, which included the period of flush production. Price.—On March 26, the price of crude oil was raised from $2.75 to $3.00 per barrel, hut this increase had little or no effect on the number of wells drilled. In the Allegany field, which accounts for three fourths of the state's oil production, 1259 wells were completed in 1942, 7 less than in 1941. The smaller number of wells drilled was not only due to the shortage of labor but also was caused by the fact that in water-flooding territory a definite program for drilling wells is followed, and the flush period of an oil well is not usually reached in time to profit by any given price increase. Daily Production.—All of the oil wells in New York state, some 21,000 in number, are small producers. The average daily oil production is 7/10 bbl. per well. Under good flooding conditions, a maximum production of 5 to 8 bbl, a day is reached about one year after the flood begins to act on the well. In 5 years the daily production usually is less than one barrel. Although most of the oil in New York is produced by flooding, an estimated 2500 old wells produce without flooding. Some of these produce as little as 1/20 bbl. a day and are pumped only at intervals. The small producing Wells are mostly on lands leased to the larger oil companies and later will be included in a flooding program. At present, they are pumped only because the owners of the land insist on the royalty. Government Aid Needed.—Because of its good lubricating qualities, New York oil is one of those for which there is an insistent and growing demand, but even at its present price of $3.00 per barrel, many of the operators are producing at a loss.

The Society of Automobile 'Engineers is planning to hold its Annual Meeting on Jan. 11, 1917. The Society extends a cordial invitation to the members of the Institute to attend a technical session on the afternoon of that day, in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, and to take part in the proceedings. Papers are being prepared on the subjects of high-speed engines, dynamics of the automobile and electrical equipnment. It is also expected that important papers will be presented on aerial navigation over water, and the use of motor boats in war. Captain V. E. Introduction In the U.S., about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacing these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal in unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still have a long way to go and costs are very high. Another option, which appears very attractive, is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form - coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corp. has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC), a wholly-owned subsidiary. Both coal-oil mixtures and coalwater mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality metallurgical coals. There are a number of incentives for potential users of coal slurry fuels and in particular for coal-water mixtures (CWMs). First, CWM represents an assured supply of fuel at a price predictable into future years. Second, CWM is available in the near term; there are no substantial advances in technology needed to provide coal slurry fuels commercially. Third, there is minimal new equipment required to accommodate CWM in the end-user's facility. Fourth, CWM is nearly as convenient to handle, store, and combust as is fuel oil. Several variants of CWM technology could be developed for different end-users in the future. One concept is to formulate slurry at the mine mouth in association with an integrated beneficiation process. This slurry fuel may be delivered to the end-user by any number of known conveyances such as barge, tank truck, and rail. Slurry fuel would then be stored on-site and used on demand in utility boilers, industrial boilers, and potentially for process heat needs or residential and commercial heating. An alternative approach is to formulate a low viscosity pre-slurry at the mine mouth and to pipeline it for a considerable distance, finishing up slurry formulation near the end-user's plant. Finally, at the other extreme of manufacturing alternatives, washed coal would be shipped to a CWM manufacturing plant just outside the end-user's gate. Depending on fuel specifications and locations of the mine and end-user facility, any of these alternatives may make economic sense. They are all achievable in the near term using existing technology or variants thereof. The Coal-Water Mixture CWMs contain a nominal 70 wt. % coal ground somewhat finer than the standard pulverized ("utility grind") coal grind suspended in water; a complex chemical additive system gives the desired CWM properties, making the suspension pumpable and preventing sedimentation and hardening over time. Figure 1 shows the difference between a sample of pulverized coal containing 30 wt. % moisture and a CWM of identical coal/water ratio. The coal sample behaves like sticky coal, while the CWM flows readily. The combustion energy of a CWM is 96-97% of that associated with the coal present, due to the penalty for vaporizing water in the CWM. Potentially any coal can be incorporated in the CWM, depending on the combustion performance required and the allowable cost. CWMs are usually formulated using high quality steam coals containing around 6% ash, 34% volatile matter, 0.8% sulfur, 1500°C (2730°F) initial deformation temperatures, and energy content of 25 GJ/t (21.5 million Btu per st). Additional beneficiation to the 3% ash level can be accomplished in an integrated process. There are a number of minimum requirements which a satisfactory CWM must meet: pumpability, stability, combustibility, and affordability. In addition, a CWM should be: resistant to extended shear, generally applicable to a wide variety of coals, forgiving/flexible, and compatible with the least expensive processing. It was found that a complex chemical additive package and control of particle size distribution are necessary to achieve these attributes simultaneously, while maximizing coal content in the slurry fuel. Formulation of Coal-Water Mixtures A major consideration in the manufacture, transportation, and utilization of a slurry fuel is its pumpability, or effective viscosity. Most CWM formulations are nonNewtonian, i.e., viscosity depends on the rate and/or duration of shear applied. Viscosities reported in this paper were obtained using a Brookfield viscometer fitted with a T-spindel and rotated at 30 rev/min, thus they are apparent viscosities measured at a shear rate of approximately 10 sec-1. The instrument does reproducibly generate a shear field if spindle size and rotation rate are held fixed. By observing the apparent viscosities of several slurries at fixed conditions it is possible to obtain a relative measure of their viscosities for comparison purposes. A true shear stress-shear rate relationship at the shear rates at which the CWM will be subjected in industry may be obtained using the Haake type and a capillary viscometer. These viscometers are used for specific applications. However, for comparison purposes, apparent viscosities are reported.

Fe-V alloys with small percentages of vanadium show no deviations from Sieverts' Law up to P~, = 1 atm in the 1600º to 1750ºC region. At somewhat under 8 pct V and up to at least 20pct V, at 1604" and 1661 °C, nitrogen absorption follows Sieverts' Law at low Pn2 values, but deviates from this law beyond critical values of pn2, due to formation of a nitrzde phase of approximately VN composition. The behavior below these solubility limits can be described at all temperatures by the equations: RAO and parlee1 suggested that the nitrogen absorption curve for liquid iron alloys takes the general form shown in Fig. 1 when an alloy nitride precipitate is formed. They showed that the precipitation of 6 titanium nitride from liquid Fe-Ti alloys follows this general scheme and dealt with the general theory involved. Recently, Evans and Pehlke2 reported their research on the precipitation of aluminum nitride from liquid Fe-A1 alloys. Fountain and Chipman's recent paper3 on the precipitation of boron nitride from solid solution contains a fine example of the analogous behavior which they have been studying in the solid state. Researches on the absorption of nitrogen by liquid Fe-V alloys have been described by various authors.1,4-7 Most of this work has been confined to fairly low vanadium concentrations and rather high temperatures because of difficulties variously described as, formation of surface scums, bridging, and so forth. This behavior and the rough thermo- dynamic calculations made by chipman,8 over eleven years ago, indicated that excessively high vanadium concentrations should not be required for vanadium nitride precipitation. It seemed desirable to look for and study this precipitation in order to fill out the thermodynamically interesting nitrogen absorption data on these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The general method used was essentially the same as employed by Rao and parlee,1 in which a Sieverts type of apparatus was used and the precipitation of the nitride detected by the "break-point" in the Sieverts' Law line, and by the visual observation of the formation of the new phase on the surface of the melt. There were, however, a few differences in apparatus and technique as described below. The oil manometer used by Rao and parlee' to measure low partial pressures of nitrogen was not employed. The present authors sought to avoid as much as possible the exposure of the liquid alloy to low total pressures of gas during the 6 to 10 hr long runs because of the heavy iron evaporation-loss errors involved. This was achieved, partly by keeping evacuation times to a minimum with fast pumping but largely by the use of two burettes, one for argon and one for nitrogen, and using them to equilibrate the alloy with mixtures of argon and nitrogen rather than nitrogen alone. Oil and gas development in Louisiana during 1935 brought this state at the close of the year up to fourth place in the nation as a producing area. A review of development in North Louisiana centers around Rodessa, the most important reserve discovered in this area in many years. While the producing limits have not been defined, this discovery is one of the major developments of the year. New gas fields were discovered in Lincoln, De Soto and Bossier parishes. The Lincoln Parish discovery, completed flowing a highly saturated gas from the Glen Rose, further indicates the importance of deep-seated prospects in the interior salt-dome area. Minor extensions were made at Sligo and Pine Island. During the year, 126 oil wells and 103 gas wells were completed in North Louisiana as compared with 144 oil wells and 68 gas wells during 1934. The North Louisiana oil production was 9,617,405 bbl. as com-pared with 9,274,050 bbl. during 1934, an increase of 343,355 bbl., while the gas production increased 18 billion cu. ft. in 1935 over its 1934 figure. The Louisiana Department of Conservation gage of Nov. 1, 1935, shows an open-flow capacity of 4,563,725,000 cu. ft. per day from 941 wells in the Monroe field and 682,770,000 cu. ft. from 159 wells in the Rich-land field. A great deal of leasing continues in North Louisiana as a result of the Lincoln Parish discovery and development in the Rodessa field, especially in Bossier, De Soto, Winn, Lincoln, Bienville, Webster, Ouachita and Richland parishes. South Louisiana's position as an area of important reserves was further proved during the past year. Increased drilling resulted in the discovery of seven new fields: Lafitte, Garden Island Bay, Tepetate, Bunkie, St. Martinsville, Jeanerette and Big Lake. New sands or producing horizons proved productive in 15 of the proven fields. The total oil production for South Louisiana during 1935 was 40,731,-056 bbl. as compared with 23,255,437 bbl. during 1934. ThE raw materials of the ceramic industry are mostly clays. This raw material is ground, water is added and the mixture pugged into a moist, plastic, rather stiff mass. From this mass the desired units of manufacture are made (bricks, hollow building tile, sewer pipe, etc.). These units are dried; then placed in kilns and heated until the desired degree of vitrification is obtained. For firing ceramic ware, two distinct types of kilns are used; namely, periodic and continuous tunnel. Periodic Kilns Periodic kilns are those ordinarily seen in a brick plant. They are either round or rectangular. The raw, dried, formed ware is piled or set in the kilns to depths frequently exceeding 10 ft. The kiln is heated until the ware is matured, then gradually cooled sufficiently to allow men to remove the ware; then the cycle is repeated. The time duration of the cycle may be more than two weeks. In order that heat can be distributed uniformly throughout the pile or setting, the units are placed so as to leave open spaces or flues throughout the pile for the passage of the hot gases. Each kiln is provided with a number of fireboxes (usually 10 or 12) spaced equally in the outside wall. The fireboxes may be equipped with flat or inclined grate bars or they may have no grates at all (dead bottom). Down-draft kilns are most used. In these the hot gaseous products of combustion from the fireboxes are deflected upward by bag walls just inside the fire zone. From the top of the kiln the gases are drawn down through the setting, off through holes in the kiln bottom, and conducted to a stack or stacks. In up-draft kilns the fireboxes are usually set somewhat lower. The hot gases are drawn inward and upward through the ware and pass off from the top. Up-draft kilns find their greatest use in the firing of common brick. In either case the problem is to maintain, as nearly as possible,

The stress distribution at the surface of a twisted cylinder is analyzed along the boundary of a slip plane of arbitrary orientation and this analysis is applied to the torsion of cylindrical crystals of magnesium. A criterion for slip is developed and the critical resolved shear stress of magnesium in torsion is found to be 0.038 kg per sq mm. The mechanism of torsional deformation in magnesium and aluminum is described, as well as the relaxation of a twisted crystal at elevated temperatures. THERE has been considerable fundamental study A of the mechanism of slip occurring during deformation in tension and compression but comparatively little attention has been paid to the mechanism of torsional deformation. This paper is concerned with the way in which a single crystal deforms in static torsion and with the phenomenon of untwisting which a twisted crystal undergoes during annealing. Particular attention is paid to the application of the critical resolved shear stress law to torsional deformation. Probably the most likely mode of torsional deformation that can be imagined consists of rotation of one part of the crystal relative to another on the active slip plane. Here the most interesting feature is the slip direction. If a cylindrical single crystal is twisted about its axis and if, to consider the simplest case, the active slip plane is normal to the specimen axis, then the direction of gross slip at any point must always be at right angles to the radius drawn to that point. It follows that the crystallographic direction of slip must be continually changing, in sharp contrast to slip in tension which occurs in a crystallographically constant direction. Extensive investigations of slip in torsion have been made by Gough and his associates.' They made torsional fatigue tests on metal single crystals belonging to a number of different crystal systems and observed, with a microscope, the appearance of slip lines on the surface and of strain markings on the transverse cross section of cylindrical specimens. They concluded that the critical resolved shear stress law was just as valid in torsion as in tension, in the sense that slip occurred on that plane and in that direction in which the resolved shear stress was a maximum. They also established that the operative slip planes and directions were the same as in tension. They did not, however, measure the critical resolved shear stress in torsion nor, in fact, did they establish that a critical value of the resolved shear stress was necessary for the initiation of slip. Their investigations were, moreover, restricted to torsional fatigue tests which necessarily involve small strain amplitudes. A series of 0.21 pci carbon steel melts was processed under conditions which sinzulated industrial vacuum degassing practices. The results indicated that the efliciency of carbon deoxidation was not significantly increased by vacuunz degassing at chamber pressures below 100 torr. The two common phenomena of vacuu?rz carbon deoxidation, i.e.,an unaccountable carbon loss and nonequilibrium deoxidation, were observed in this study. Oxygen from adsorbed and chenzically combined water of certain refractory structures was probably responsible for the unaccourttable carbon drop. The nonequzlibrium deoxida-tion phenomenon was adequalely correlated by a bubble nucleation )mechanism. Although the major limiting factor in oxygen removal from these melts contained in alumina crucibles could not be eslablished with certainty, there was some evidence that melt-refractory interactions were not the most imp-portant limiting factor. CONSIDERABLE attention has been given to the use of carbon in conjunction with vacuum degassing* as a deoxidation technique. An advantage of utilizing the reaction: for deoxidation purposes is that the reaction product is gaseous and hence can be effectively removed from the melt. The pressure dependency of Eq. [I] is illustrated by the expression for the thermodynamic equilibrium constant, K: where pco is the partial pressure of carbon monoxide, and hc and ho are, respectively, the Henrian activities of carbon and oxygen in molten steel. The thermodynamic aspects of the C-0 reaction in molten Fe-C-0 alloys have been investigated extensively. Theoretical predictions based on Eq. [2] indicate that, at the chamber pressures reached in most vacuum degassing units, carbon is the most effective deoxidizer that can be obtained. ~ornak' has compared industrial values of carbon and oxygen contents with values calculated from theory, and has shown that on a commercial basis vacuum carbon deoxidation has not achieved the degree of success that is predicted from theoretical considerations of the C-0 reaction. The use of industrial units to determine the reason for this deviation is limited by economics and the difficulty in controlling critical process variables. Therefore laboratory-sized experiments in this area should yield valuable information. Investigations on vacuum carbon deoxidation have been made in experiments conducted under vacuum induction melting conditions where pressures in the low micron range, long treatment times, exposure to highly dynamic vacuum conditions, and relatively quiescent bath conditions have been maintained. Inve~ti~ators~~~ utilizing vacuum induction melting for the production of high-purity iron by carbon deoxidation have concluded that, under high vacuum conditions, melt-refractory interactions constantly supply oxygen to the melt. Thus, it has been suggested that refractory dissociation rather than the C-0 reaction establishes the lowest possible oxygen content of a melt. Thomas and Moreau4 and Bennett, Protheroe, and ward5 have studied carbon deoxidation of Fe-C alloys melted in magnesia crucibles under reduced pressures. The results of both studies differed considerably from those predicted by theory, and the limiting factor for lower oxygen contents was attributed to melt-refractory interactions. Because the refractory material used in both investigations was magnesia, no quantitative measure of crucible reaction could be made and the amount of carbon consumed during treatment was utilized as an indirect indication of the extent of crucible reaction. Studies concerned with the determination of the minimum oxygen content attainable in pure iron and Fe-C alloy material vacuum-induction-melted in various crucible materials have also been conducted."' The suitability of a crucible refractory for use under vacuum conditions appears to depend upon the major refractory constituent, the amount and type of impurity oxides, and the composition of the melt. Meadowcroft and Elliott9 have presented a theoretical review of the type and extent of various refractory reactions which should be considered in vacuum refining. ~eadowcroft'~ considered the vacuum degassing process to be dependent upon the "carbon boil" and has proposed that a part of the difference between the experimental and theoretical results for vacuum carbon deoxidation may be explained by the fact that the pco term in Eq.
