THE following is the discussion of a paper, with the same title, by N. L. Alison, which appeared in our February issue: E. F. Tillson commented that while the fundamentals are well presented it would have been of interest to him to have had the author add some of his own experiences with fan installations. A. W. Hesse remarked concerning the use of the forward curved blade fan on the surface at a metal mine which has, ordinarily, but few airways, that the farther they are driven, the higher the resistance rises, and less air will be delivered, as the water gage will remain constant with a consequent loss in quantity. D. Harrington added that the metal mines do not or¬dinarily install fans until the mine is well developed, so changes are relatively slower after fan installation than at a coal mine.

WHILE Mr. Fahrenwald has been working on the fundamentals of ore-dressing, in Idaho, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington, has been studying the corresponding fundamentals for the closely-allied subject of coal-washing. In this work many of the principles outlined in Mr. Fahrenwald's paper have been touched on, one important exception being that phase of his studies where conditions were approximated between those existing on a table and those existing in a hindered-settling classifier. During the past three years this work has been given over almost exclusively to a study of coal-tabling to devise better methods of cleaning fine sizes of coal, particularly the coals of the Northwest, which are very difficult to wash. One important result of this study thus far has been the development of a satisfactory hindered-settling coal classifier, now in use in several commercial plants. Recently table stratifica-tion has been the subject for study. This latter phase of the work with coal,. as well as the earlier portion dealing with hindered-settling classification, has in a measure paralleled Mr. Fahrenwald's work with ore. Without going into details about the results of the coal experiments, I shall merely say that, from a quali-tative standpoint, they are, in general, concordant with Mr. Fahrenwald's, but that from a quantitative stand-point the results, particularly those with, table strati-fication, are somewhat different. These differences may disappear as the work progresses-Mr. Fahrenwald is further ahead with his experiments than we are at the Northwest Station-but if not, the disparity would not be surprising, and indeed would be what one might reasonably expect when investigators work on two very dissimilar materials and use different apparatus and methods of study. However, this- mention of our coal-washing experiments is made only in passing. A principle of general application that may be estab-lished from Mr. Fahrenwald's paper is that different types of stratification should be used in successive' gravity-concentration processes to. obtain best results.

The increasing emphasis upon the use of refractory metals has resulted in a closer look at some of the properties of these materials. In the course of a study of the Nb-N system it became necessary to re-examine one such property, the spectral emissivity, e. Experiments were performed in order to determine e for solid niobium as a function of both temperature and nitrogen content. The results of these experiments, which indicate a small but significant correction to the spectral emissivity of pure niobium, are reported herein. In addition, data on the total emissivity, et, of niobium and the spectral emissivity of the nitride Nb2N are given. To this author's knowledge, neither of these emissivities are as yet reported in the literature. Previous studies of the spectral emissivity of niobium have been few. In 1915, Burgess and Waltenburgl obtained a value of 0.49. Whitney? in 1935, used a Mendenhall V to obtain the commonly accepted value of 0.374. A recent investigation of sintering of niobium graphically reported a value of about 0.36= using a solid block of the metal with a blackbody hole drilled into it. In the present experiment a method similar to that of Worthing4 was used. An 8-in. long and 3/16 in. diam hollow tube was formed from smooth surfaced 0.0013-

In open cast mining of coal, the cost per ton of output is four to five times less and labor productivity five to six times higher than in under- ground mining. This is why the coal industry of the USSR is oriented toward giving priority to the development of open cast coal mining. Deposits of coal which lend themselves to open cast mining in the USSR are enormous, with 90% of them located in the eastern part of the country. The technique is by no means limited to the eastern part, however-despite wide variations in climate, other parts of the Soviet Union also use open cast mining. The occurrence and type of coal deposits in the USSR vary greatly. Some of them are flat coal seams 2 to 40 m thick, and a few are even thicker. There are also deposits having a complex mode of occurrence, such as a series of seams of different thicknesses with angles of dip varying from slightly inclined to steep, often with dislocations. Overburden materials are quite diverse with regard to physical and mechanical properties. There are three kinds encountered-loose or unconsolidated overburden, medium-hard material, and hard rock. The stripping ratio, i.e., the amount of cover per ton of mined coal, varies from 1 to 12 cu m per ton. SYSTEMS OF MINING The great diversity of natural conditions has brought forth a variety of technologies and techniques in the open cast mining of coal. In open cast practice, the following systems of mining are used : (1) a transportation system in which the overburden is transported to spoil banks by rail or by truck; (2) a system with direct disposal of overburden, the rocks being dumped on spoil banks with a stripping excavator; and

The coal procedures described in this paper address the problems building a body of coal data that is accurate, precise, readily available, and easy to manipulate. The system is a set of interactive computer procedures consisting of a) data gathering (core hole and geophysical logs, their location, elevation, etc.) and standardized computer printouts, b) the graphic outputs of coded logs (log strips-scale variable) wing on-line electrostatic plotter, c) determination of seam continuity via relative movements of the log strips on an interactive graphic display terminal, d) calculation of the seam parameters (minable seam thickness, volume of non-coal material in the seam, ash and sulfur content of the raw or prepared product, roof and floor characteristics and other attributes relevant to mining), e) posting of seam parameters wing on-line drum plotter controlled by a microprocessor on-line to the minicomputer (PDP- 11).

The increasing demand for greater speed and more accuracy, in making daily assays of ores and products from mills treating material containing but very small quantities of lead and copper, has caused the older analytical methods to be supplanted by new ones devised to meet the needs of modern work. For " control" work in copper-analyses, I had, previous to the present equipment, introduced in my laboratory the ordinary electrolytic method, using hollow cylindrical electrodes; and with these I began a series of experiments in determining the lead-content of daily mill-samples and controls. The results, proving accurate and satisfactory, I then devised, with Mr. H. E. T. Haultain, a cheaper electrode than the ordinary jaCket-electrode, which costs from $15 to $20,—the expense of the older form making the installation of many units very costly. The form of cathode finally adopted as the most satisfactory, shown in Fig. 1, is cut from 0.001-in. platinum foil. It is 12.5 cm. long, and is divided into a blade 4 cm. wide and 6.25 cm. long, and a tongue 0.7 cm. aide and 6.25 long, the immersion area being 50 sq. cm. and weight 1.5 grams. The blade is first sand-blasted and then corrugated lengthwise, in order to impart the necessary rigidity. Strips of platinum foil 0.001 in. thick, 12.5 cm. long and 0.5 cm. aide, having a median corrugation, form the anodes. Three electrodes are used in each cell; one anode in the middle and one cathode on each side of the anode. These electrodes are connected to slotted aluminum terminals, in which they are held by contact pressure. The terminals are 5/16in. rods, projecting 2 in. horizontally in front of the wall of the cabinet; at the back the middle electrode (anode) is connected with one pole of the current, and the two outer ones (cathodes) with the other pole.

IN attacking the problems of mining and treating large disseminated copper orebodies such as those occurring in the Miami or the Ray district of Arizona, one of the vital questions to be decided is, "What is the value of the orebody per ton in place?", The importance of this question lies in the fact that its answer helps to reach a decision concerning the method of mining to be employed. Let it be assumed for the moment that milling and smelting practice, especially the latter, is more or less standardized; and has a cost incapable of much variation, while the cost of mining has a considerable range owing to the large number of mining methods by which a mine may be exploited. For instance, a method may be adopted whereby all the available ore can be extracted perfectly clean (i.e., unmixed with barren material) at a relatively high cost; or a method may be used involving the necessary dilution of a portion of the ore with waste, in order to recover that portion, thus giving a relatively poorer extraction but nevertheless a lower working cost than the former method. Naturally, between these two extremes there lie intermediate methods. In order to arrive at a solution of a mining method problem that is of any value, it is necessary that accurate and complete estimates of mining, milling, and smelting performances and costs shall be established. By way of illustration is given a, case of mining, by the system of undercutting and caving, a large orebody with an average content of 1.50 per cent. copper supposedly all in sulphide form, to which case has been applied those results in mining operations which one may fairly assume are to be expected when viewed in the light of G. R. Lehman's ore-drawing experiments, which form the subject of a paper to be presented at this meeting. It is assumed that the total. costs will be as shown in the following table:

E. L. Howard (Chief Testing Engineer, Pacific Cement & Aggregates, Inc., San Francisco, Calif.) We have made concrete with all the materials mentioned by Mr. Barneyback, including sawdust. He has highlighted the principal problems and effects found when these light materials are used as concrete aggregate. We can only agree with the inter-relationship he has emphasized between grading, specific gravity and unit weight. Uniformity in these characteristics helps to assure good concrete. Mr. Barneyback says the design of lightweight concrete mixtures "is a complete mystery to most engineers". He is wholly right in his evaluation of our ability generally to put together a concrete using lightweight aggregate. A study of the references he has appended will yield little comfort in the matter of proportioning. Much remains to be done in this area of concrete. We believe Mr. Barneyback has treated the subject, though briefly, in an excellent manner.

THE unsteady-state type of gas-liquid metal diffusion cell1 has found considerable application.2"4 Cells of this general design can function as steady-state cells if allowed to operate long enough to reach steady state. This report tells of some success in the adaption of this type of cell for steady-state work, using the 0-Ag system in which the mass transfer of the gas "species" is basically controlled by diffusion in the liquid. The gas, e.g-., O2, is maintained in the cell tube'-3 at 1 atm pressure, Fig. 1, by buret and sensitive oil manometer. The gas, after diffusing through the stagnant metal, escapes at the annular metal surface around the tube at a lower constant partial pressure, in this case that of O2 in slowly flowing air, 1 atm.

SEGREGATION can occur only in cast alloys that solidify over a range of temperatures with a difference in composition of liquid and solid phases within this range (ignoring monotectic systems and chemical reactions as in rimming. steels). Thus a pure binary eutectic alloy should show no segregation unless undercooling occurs for one of the solid constituents of the eutectic; e.g., chill-cast Al-12 per cent Si alloys. The phasial condition implicitly described above-solidification over a range of temperatures with a compositional difference between solid. and liquid-is found in nearly all solid solutions or combinations of solid solutions and eutectics. Metastable conditions of solidification of these types of alloys cause coring; i.e., a difference in composition between the center of a dendrite and its periphery. This composition gradient can be detected usually only by microscopic examination of etched structures; it is a "micro" effect. The gradient of more immediate industrial concern is that between the center of a cast section and the surface layers. This gross (macro) effect is usually determinable only by sampling of the casting at different points, with chemical analyses of each sample. If the compositional difference is of the same type as in coring, the first parts to freeze being enriched in higher-melting-point constituents, and vice versa, the effect is called normal segregation. When what is apparently the first part of the casting to solidify shows a higher concentration of low-melting-point constituents, the effect is called inverse segregation. These macro effects are quite separate from the micro effect, coring, yet the latter must be. described first because it is an essential part of the picture. CORING Solid Solution, Ni-Cu The nickel-copper phase diagram is reproduced in Fig. Ia, in which the solid lines represent the equilibrium liquidus 1, 3, 7 and solidus 2, 5, 8, and where the vertical 1, 4, 8 represents a 55 per cent Cu alloy. Upon moderately rapid solidification, the first dendritic axes of composition 2 (see Fig. 1b) start to form at a temperature somewhat under I. Solidification continues by growth of the dendritic nuclei, but at temperature 4 the increment solidifying is of composition 5. The rapidity of this crystal growth prevents diffusion of nickel and copper atoms from adjusting the composition of the entire dendrite at 5, which it would be under equilibrium conditions. IN nearly all ore-dressing operations it is a common practice to discharge mixtures of fine ore and water through spigots; for example, from classifier pockets, from jig hutches, from settling tanks, etc. As a, general rule it is desirable to regulate the composition, i.e., the ratio of water to sand, of such discharged products; and this can usually be done by varying the size of the orifice or spigot through which the material is discharged. Thus it is that problems similar to the following are frequently encountered: With a given quantity of solids per unit time, of a given specific gravity, to be discharged with water under a given head, and with a given ratio of water to solid, what must be the size of the spigot opening? If the spigot is to be open continuously, there are, aside from its form, but three factors governing the rate at which it will discharge a mixture of sand and water, namely: the head of water above the spigot; the area of the spigot opening; and the viscosity of the material to be discharged. The term viscosity, as used here, means the ratio of the volume of pure water that will flow through a given orifice under a given head in a given time to the volume of the material under consideration that will flow through the same orifice in the same time under the same conditions. While the actual viscosity of water containing sand in suspension is not increased by the presence of the sand, nevertheless the volume-rate at which such a mixture will flow through an orifice is less than that at which pure water will flow, by reason of the friction of the particles of sand against each other and against the sides of the orifice. In other words, the flow is retarded as it would be by increased viscosity; and therefore, for the purpose in view, we may speak of the viscosity of a mixture of ore grains and water as defined above. The head of water above the spigot is generally fixed by the form and design of the classifier or tank to which the spigot is attached. Locality and Geological Occurrence. The Alpine region of Southwest Colorado, comprising the San Juan and Uncompaghre Mountains, is composed of a deeply eroded sheet of acid eruptive rocks, overlying in part gneissic sehists, and in part limestones and sandstones, including portions of the Silurian, Devonian, and Carboniferous systems. The section is clearly and beautifully exposed along the Uncompaghre River from its headwaters to its exit from the mountains. The river's course from the town of Ouray towards the Los Pinos agency is due north, and four miles from Ouray, in this direction, the Uncompaghre receives from the east the Red Cafion Creek. Following up the narrow caftan we find the section through white.. sandstone in strata dipping to the north and west, and belonging either to the lower or middle Devonian system. Presently the steep cafion-liko character of the ravine gives place to more gentle slopes, and we have entered crystalline rock-porphyry. The contact is well marked, for the sandstone, to a depth of from six to ten feet, resembles quartzite, i. e., is semifused. Ascending still higher, a small

In this paper, as prepared for delivery at the Southern California regional meeting on Oct. 14, 1948, it was thought best to interpret the term "economics" in a rather broad manner and to include, in addition to the material losses and recoveries and associated monetary values (Part I), a limited discussion of the increased difficulties or the particular problem and the special requirements, as the particle sizes of the suspended particles range down from the relatively coarse to 100, to 10, to 1 micron or even to a fraction of one micron (Part II). Further, it is not quite in order to overlook entirely the community and individual health problems, although space requires the economics of this to be considered only very incompletely. Therefore, Part III, covering this phase of the subject, is very limited. This paper, then, is divided into 5 parts or headings as follows: I Losses and/or values in suspended solids. II Particle size. III Dust and fumes in community and individual living. IV Means and Procedures for dust and fume collection. V Description or examples of specific equipment in service and of the several types used for dust and fume collection. Because of the wide extent and wealth of subject material available and the space and time limitation imposed, presentation and discussion are less than originally planned. I—Losses and/or Values in Suspended Solids The weight involved in moving streams of industrial plant gases is commonly not appreciated, neither is their carrying power in the weight of solids maintained in suspension and moved with the gas stream from a point of origin or pick-up to a point of dissipation or settlement. These, however, are major weight figures; for example, in a modern iron blast furnace there may be five tons of gas for every ton of iron produced and by the time this blast furnace gas has been burned in stoves or under boilers the weight of gas discharged to atmosphere is on the order of eight times the weight of iron produced. Similarly for nonferrous metallurgy there may readily be from 10 to 20 times the weight of gases discharged to atmosphere as there is metal produced. A cement kiln in operation or a kiln in service to produce metallurgical lime may have on the order of 5 to 6 times the weight of stack gases as of clinker or lime produced, and at least the cement kiln, because of the very fine nature of its feed, is a very heavy dust producer. It may be noted that there have been two developments in progress for nearly three decades. Both are extraordinary in the industrial economics effected and in their ready availability to ever larger units of operation and their ever widening importance in industry, and both are productive of great quantities of finely divided material in furnacing. The first of these is the flotation process for ores, especially the metallics such as copper, lead, and zinc; and the second, powdered fuel combustion for power plant, industrial plants and metallurgical operations. Today, new developments, for example, flotation for the nonmetallics such as higher grade limestone for cement manufacture which requires still finer grinding and the powdered-coal-fired boilers with production ratings of over 1,000,000 lb of steam per hr, bring still more concentrated and hugely increased quantities of stack emission. Perhaps the honors for the greatest interest in the quantities and values escaping in waste furnace and equipment gases belong to the nonferrous metallurgical operations. Their record of achievement in the installation of dust and fume collection equipment, largely baghouses or Cottrell electrical precipitators, is exceeded by no other industry. Something of the magnitude and variety of equipment utilized in such recovery systems was covered by the writer in two papers presented to the Institute some 10 years ago.1,2 It is not intended to repeat the material of those articles, but it is thought that they complement this offering and should be noted. COPPER ROASTERS As the copper roasters are the first of the series of furnaces handling the copper-bearing concentrates in the usual copper smelter of today, it is in order to make them the first consideration. Multiple hearth sulphide roasters, not hard driven, often maintain their dust loss through exit gases at 3 pet or below of feed to furnace; in hard-driven or maximum-driven furnaces, exit gas losses often approximate 7 pet of charge with a ±2 pet variation for special conditions prevailing at some plants. A 5 pet loss of feed in a roaster gas exit, unless reclaimed, often makes the difference between a profit and loss operation, and in many cases substantial recovery is the very basis of dividend payments. Geologists and engineers in charge of diamond drilling often have no practical experience in the work, yet they must direct the drillers. In discussing some of the problems that arise, the author of this paper has tried to remember the things he did not know about diamond drilling when he first came in contact with that work. The basic reason for most diamond-drill holes is to obtain information. The more thorough the understanding of the geological and engineering problems involved, the greater will be the benefit derived from a drilling program. One of the best methods to ensure some thinking before drilling is to record on the permanent drill log, before the hole is collared, the reasons for the work and the information desired from that particular hole. When the hole is finished, the information obtained should be recorded. Driller The choice of a diamond driller is very important. If no experienced driller is available, a competent miner who has a sense of responsibility and better than average mechanical ingenuity can do the work. The best answer to most practical drilling problems, from the standpoint of the person in charge of the drilling program, is the service of experienced diamond drillers or drilling firms. Equipment Drilling equipment should be adequate to put down the longest hole desired and handle the toughest ground encountered. The type of bit used depends upon the ground drilled. Experimenting with various bits and careful study of footage records are the best means of determining which to use. Under ordinary circumstances it is best to drill using an EX barrel when possible. The length of rod and core barrels that can be used depends on the size of the drill station. Also, the length of core barrel depends on the way the ground cores. In good ground as much core will be recovered with a 10-ft. barrel as with a shorter one, and with considerable saving of drilling time. A water pump is needed if the hole is so deep that the water pressure is not strong enough to wash out the cuttings, or if it is drilled at an angle that prevents full force of the water pressure. Instructions For an Inexperienced Driller 1. Never run a bit too long a time. When a bit seems to be "good for one more run," discard it. 2. Always let the rods down on bottom easily. Protect the bit from sudden shock. 3. Start the drilling slowly and easily. Do not put pressure on the bit too fast. Diamonds can break. 4. Be sure the water pressure is strong enough to clear the bit, but do not use more water than is needed, as it may wash away the core. Usually, if no core is recovered the hole is a total loss. 5. When dry-blocking, do not run without water longer than necessary as the bit may burn. 6. Be sure the rods are well caulked and tightly screwed together. If not well caulked they will lose water, and if not

THE heats of formation of the tellurides of cadmium, indium, tin, and lead have been measured as a continuation of research on the thermodynamic properties of compounds of tellurim.' The tellurides of these metals were selected with a view to examining the relation between the heat of formation and the position of the metal in the periodic system. The elements cadmium, indium, and tin are in the same period and tin and lead are in the same group of the periodic system. The tellurides of indium are of special interest because four compounds, In2Te, InTe, In2Te3, and InzTe5, occur in this system. The available information on the heats of formation of the compounds investigated consists of values for CdTe, SnTe, and PbTe derived from electromotive-force measurements,J a value for CdTe obtained by tin solution alorimetr, and values for InTe and In2Te3 determined by combustion calorimetry.5 These values, however, refer to various temperatures ranging from 273' to 673°K and some of the reported error limits are large. Liquid metal solution calorime-try may be expected to yield more accurate values for the heats of formation than electromotive-force measurements or combustion calorimetry. The heats of fusion and the melting points of the compounds InTe and In,Te3 were determined in a constant-temperature gradient calorimeter. No published information appears to be available on the heat of fusion of these compounds. The results reported here give an indication of the degree of order in the solid compounds at the melting point. 1) MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. Samples of the compounds SnTe and PbTe were obtained from the Westinghouse Research Laboratories and samples of the compound InTe from Lincoln Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Tech- nology. Additional samples of the compounds InTe, SnTe, and PbTe and samples of CdTe, In2Te, In2Te3, and In,Tes were prepared from 99.995 pct Cd (Baker Chemical CO.), 99.999+ pct In (American Smelting and Refining Co.), 99.99 pct Sn (Baker Chemical Co.), 99.999+ pct Pb (Fisher Scientific Co.), and 99.999+ pct Te (American Smelting and Refining Co.). Stoichiometric amounts of the component elements were melted in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes. The melts were held at approximately 100°C above the liquidus for about 16 hr and shaken repeatedly. The melts of the compounds In2Te and InzTe5, which form by peritectic reactions, were quenched into iced water. The melts of the other compounds, which have congruent melting points, were slowly cooled to room temperature. The samples were then annealed for 5 days at approximately 50°C below their respective solidus temperatures. Metallographic examination did not reveal any evidence of second phases or segregation. At least two batches of each compound were prepared. Samples from each batch were used in determining the heats of formation and, in the cases of InTe and In,Te3, the heats of fusion. The Heats of Formation. The heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds were measured by metal solution calorimetry with liquid bismuth at 623" as solvent. In this technique, the heat of formation is determined from the measured heat effects on dissolution of the compound and of a mechanical mixture of the component elements. The difference between these heat effects adjusted for changes in the composition of the bath gives the heat of formation at the temperature from which the samples are added to the bath (273°K). The experimental technique and method of calculation have been described in detail elsewhere.= It should be emphasized that the reported heats of formation depend on the thermodynamic data used in calculating the heat effects for the calibration additions. In the present investigation, the calorimeter was calibrated by adding pure bismuth at 273°K to the bismuth bath at 623°K. The reported heats of formation are based on a value of 4.96 kcal per g-atom for the difference in the heat contents of bismuth at 623" and 273". If a new value for this quantity becomes available, the reported results may be adjusted in direct proportion. The concentration of solute in the bath at the end of a calorimetric run did not exceed 1.7 at. pct and was usually less. In this range, the heat effect on dissolution of the solute was a linear function of the concentration of solute. In determining the heats of formation of the compounds in the system In-Te, a few runs were carried out in which two neighboring compounds such as InTe and In,Te3 and the corresponding mechanical mixtures of the components were added to the calorimeter.
