The flotation response of quartz in the presence of calcium chloride and various fatty acids is presented. Flotation is not effected with lauric acid until calcium laurate is precipitated in solution, while flotation is obtained with the 9, 10, and 11-carbon members before precipitation of the calcium carboxylate. The active species responsible for flotation is suggested to be a basic aqueous complex, e.g. Ca(OH) (RCOO) (aq), and a possible mechanism of adsorption is given. Most of the previous work on activation in non-metallic flotation systems has involved the use of high molecular weight collectors, such as oleic acid or alkyl aryl Sulfonate.1-7 In these studies the levels of addition of collector and activator required for flotation were much above the concentrations necessary for precipitation of the metal-collector salt. In fact, Clemmer, Clemmons, Rampacek, Williams, and Stacy1 have stated, "Our experiments on a variety of materials have demonstrated that the metal salts which react with anionic collecting agents, as soaps and alkyl sulfates, to form relatively insoluble compounds may be employed as activating agents provided an optimum quantity is used at a proper pH." On the other hand, Gaudin and chang8 obtained flotation with additions of barium and lauric acid below the level required for barium lautate precipitation.

The dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions was studied by determining the time required for the solvents to dissolve gold leaf. Minute traces, even 0.5 ppm, of sulphide ion retard the dissolution of gold, and this behavior cannot be accounted for by the presently accepted hypotheses involving oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation. On the other hand, traces of the salts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium considerably accelerate the dissolution. The beneficial effect of lead is dependent upon the pH and cyanide ion concentration of the solution. ALTHOUGH cyanide solvents are used very ex-x*. tensively for the recovery of gold from ores and concentrates, the normal rate of solution of the precious metal as determined by Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley,1 and others2 is less than about 3 mg per sq cm of exposed gold surface per hour, corresponding to a corrosion depth of approximately 1.5 microns (0.00006 in.) per hr. Although the slow rate may be increased to some extent in certain cases, as, for example, when the the gold is partially imbedded in iron pyrites,3 the leaching operation is generally the most time-consuming step of the cyanide process. Frequently it is necessary for the leaching solvents to remain in contact with the ores for 50 to 200 hr in order to dissolve all of the gold particles.' Not only does the slow solution rate cause some increase in the capital costs, but the cyanide consumption also may be increased because of vaporization of hydrocyanic acid and secondary reactions with minerals such as malachite (CuCO3 • Cu(OH)2), and pyrrhotite, which often are associated with gold. It is not surprising that numerous attempts have been made to accelerate the dissolution of gold in cyanide solutions. Experimental Gold Leaf Test: The gold leaf test was apparently originated by M. Faraday, who, by means of it, discovered that dilute cyanide solutions would dissolve gold readily in the presence of oxygen. The usefulness and reliability of the test have been discussed elsewhere.5,6 Essentially, the method consists of determining the time required for 5-ml portions of cyanide solvents to dissolve squares of 23 carat gold leaf, 0.5 cm on edge, when shaken in 10-ml test tubes with the solvents. The weight of gold leaf per test was 0.051 mg as determined by the direct weighing of a leaf 8.6x8.6 cm (weight = 15 mg) and measuring the area of the test sample (0.25 sq cm). Gold leaf is of remarkably uniform thickness.6 Since gold leaf, like native gold, contains small amounts of copper and silver, the results are comparable with those one might expect in cyaniding gold ores. As six or more tests can be made simul- taneously, the relative efficiencies of the solvents can be evaluated readily. All dilute solutions of lead, bismuth, thallium and mercury salts were prepared by the ordinary dilution method used by chemists. Our C.P. sodium cyanide and buffering reagents had no detectable amounts of either sulphide ion or heavy metals. Soluble Sulphides in the Cyanide Process: The action of soluble sulphides is of interest in the study of the dissolution of gold in cyanide solutions. That gold ores which contain compounds of arsenic and antimony often are not amenable to direct cyanide treatment is well known, and it said that arsenic and antimony are "cyanicides."7 It is commonly believed that part of the sulphur content of such ores is soluble in alkaline solutions to give sulphide ion, which reacts with the free cyanide content of the leaching solutions to form inert thio-cyanates or reacts with the dissolved oxygen to form sulphites or sulphates.8 A purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that sulphide ion may behave in a manner that cannot be explained by either the oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation theories and to prove directly that concentrations of sulphide ion which cannot be detected even by colorimetric methods may retard the dissolution of gold.

(Continuing the discussion of the paper of James Johnston, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133.) This paper cannot fail of being of great interest and value to all who are interested in the cyanide process, on account of the important developments which it records. Mr. Johnston is to be commended for the large amount of detail which he gives, and the company and its management for permitting the publication of data of this character, which while of great value to others could well be considered private property. It might be discussed from a number of standpoints: First, as an example of recent practice in mill and cyanide plant construction; second, the mill practice; third, the cyanide practice; and fourth, the new features in cyanide treatment involved. Perhaps a more vivid way of expressing it would be : First, the equipment or tools with which the various operations are carried on, are they the best and most efficient which could have been selected for their respective uses; and, second, is the best use in every case made of these tools? It may be well inquired is the highest possible recovery of silver made at the lowest cost per ounce recovered? For after all, the making of the greatest ultimate profit is inseparably associated with successful metallurgical practice; there must therefore be at all times a careful balance maintained between recovery and cost of obtaining it. I wish to call attention in a very general way to the equipment used and to an anticipation of questions which are bound to arise in this connection. However, the. bulk of my discussion will be confined to the presentation of certain additional data, together with a more or less general discussion showing the line of development which leads up to the present practice and .the applicability of certain features of it to similar problems elsewhere. There are a number of vital points of broad general interest involved in Nipissing low-grade practice upon which metallurgists will by no means be agreed to which I wish to call particular attention in the hope that it will lead to the presentation of data y others of practice in other districts which will' assist in reconciling this divergence of opinion.

In the Institute of Metals Division Lecture of 1940, E. H. Dix, J~.(I)~ discussed the acceleration of the rate of corrosion by high constant stresses. Experimental data obtained on this subject at the Aluminum Research Laboratories and a theory compatible with these facts were included in that lecture. The present paper contains data and ideas subsequently developed at the Aluminum Research Laboratories. Dix pointed out that in order for acceleration of corrosion by constant stress to occur: (1) There must exist in the alloy a susceptibility to selective corrosion along more or less continuous paths, as for in- stance at grain boundaries, and (2) There must exist a condition of high stress acting in a direction tending to pull the metal apart along these continuous paths. Acceleration of corrosion rate by stress is not confined to any one alloy system. Table I lists some of the metals and alloys and some of the corroding environments in which acceleration of corrosion by stress was sufficient to cause cracking (stress- corrosion cracking). It will be noted that the variety of alloys in which stress-corrosion cracking has occurred is rather large. Also, it will be observed that

The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground " caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time.

DURING the last 25 years, there appeared in the literature a number of papers describing equipment and operating techniques for the determination of total oxygen in iron and steel. In the early papers, comparatively little attention was paid to side reactions that occur when iron is saturated with carbon at a high temperature in a high vacuum. As more experience was gained with the new method, the limitations appeared. Metals, with a boiling point lower than iron, distilled out of the crucible, condensed in the cooler part of the furnace, and subsequently reacted with carbon monoxide to form oxides and carbon. Aluminum, manganese, and the alkaline earth metals proved troublesome in this respect. Modifications have been devised to overcome the difficulties due to aluminum and manganese, while the alkaline earth metals are not of too much concern as yet to the steel chemist. The reactions of sulphur have received less attention, although it is generally recognized that some carbon disulphide is probably formed. Liquid air traps have been used in some cases to prevent any carbon disulphide from entering the analytical train. Sulphur was not a particular problem at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories until the analysis of the irons of higher than usual sulphur contents became necessary. In order to describe the procedure developed for such irons, it will be necessary to first describe the type of vacuum-fusion equipment employed because the operation of vacuum-fusion equipment is an art to a considerable extent. At the Laboratories, vacuum-fusion equipment has been in daily operation since about 1930. Over the years, the evolution of this apparatus has been governed by the versatility required to analyze a wide variety of materials. Since all types of materials from high purity metals to slags are analyzed and, since seldom more than a few samples of one type are analyzed in succession, the apparatus was designed for accuracy and flexibility rather than for speed. A general view of the equipment is shown in Fig. 1, while Fig. 2 shows the relationship of the various parts. In Fig. 2, A is a vertical double-glazed 24X27/8 in. OD silica tube heated with a 20 kva mercury-arc high frequency generator. The tube is closed with a water-cooled brass head attached with de Khotinsky cement. A turret cap fits on this head and is sealed with a 1/8x3 in. "0" ring. The head contains a sight glass and two 8 in. horizontal glass tubes, for sample storage, cemented in with de Khotinsky cement. B is a four-stage Gaede mercury diffusion pump connected to the water-cooled head with a 11/2 in. copper tube through a flange with an "0" ring. The output of the vacuum pump feeds into an automatic Toepler F pump which compresses the gas sample over mercury in the measuring burettes, G and H. There are bypasses in this line for a McLeod gage C and a Piranni gage D, a manometer E, and for initial pumping out of the system with a Cenco Megavac backing-up pump. The reduction crucible shown in Fig. 3 is machined of Tungar Bulb quality (A.G.K.T.E.-2) graphite. The sample is guided into the crucible with the graphite funnel depicted on this figure. The arrangement of the crucible, radiation screens, etc. in the furnace is as follows: A 1 15/16x61/2 in. Alundum thimble, porosity RA-84, with two 1/8 in. holes near the top and opposite each other which take a pair of special tongs used for lowering it in place, is prepared. A 3/4 in. layer of powdered graphite is placed in this Alundum thimble, and the graphite crucible containing 20 g of ingot iron and 0.5 g of carbon is carefully centered on this bed of graphite powder and graphite powder is packed around it to the top of the graphite cru-

Tensile data indicate that over the range of strain rates 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1 and in the temperature range 298° to 743°K the flow stress at a given temperature may be expressed as: C0 = Cem where m changes abruptly at a critical strain rate of 10-2 sec-1. The Zener-Hollomon parameter was tested and found to be invalid except at temperatures exceeding 700° K. Values of AH calculated for temperatures above 700°K ranged from 30 to 47.5 kcal per g-mole. ThE flow characteristics of aluminum and aluminum alloys as a function of temperature and strain rate have been of interest to various experimenters for many years. Trozera et al.1 determined tensile flow curves for pure aluminum and concluded that the combined effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress could be related using the Zener-Hollomon parameter. More recently, Hockett2 proposed a relationship between compressive flow stress, temperature, and true strain rate which could be represented by a surface. Holt et al.3 studied strain rate effects on flow stress in a number of aluminum alloys at room temperature. It was determined that there is a critical strain rate above which a strain rate effect is observed. It was also reported that the strain rate sensitivity was significant in aluminum alloys in the "0" condition only. In a recent review paper McQueen4 has considered a number of mathematical expressions which have been used to describe the relationship between stress, strain rate, and temperature. These expressions have been applied to the flow characteristics of a number of different metals and alloys including aluminum. In the present work the strain rate sensitivity of 7075-0 aluminum was determined in the temperature range of 298° to 743°K. The tensile flow stress at 0.2 pct offset was obtained over a nominal strain rate range of 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1. EXPERIMENTAL Threaded tensile specimens were cut from a single heat of 7075-T6 aluminum. The composition of this heat is given in Table I. The test bars had a gage section 1.5 in. long by 0.250 in. diam and conformed to ASTM specification E-8-57T. After machining, the bars were annealed at 413° ± 10°C for 2 hr. They were then cooled to 260°C in 3 hr, and finally air cooled to room temperature. This treatment is commonly used to produce the "0" condition. Load-time curves at constant crosshead speeds were obtained at various temperatures using an Instron testing machine. Crosshead speeds ranged from 0.002 to 40 in. per min. A three-zone resistance tube furnace was used for the elevated-temperature tests. Temperatures were measured at three points along the gage length by means of suitably placed thermocouples. Each tensile bar was held at temperature for 30 min prior to testing and the maximum temperature variation along the gage length was kept below 1°C. In all, 275 samples were tested and each data point plotted is an average of at least two tests. In many cases the point represents up to six tests. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Values of the flow stress at 0.2 pct offset at six different temperatures are plotted vs strain rate on log-log coordinates in Fig. 1. The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $530,000. An active effort is being made to in¬crease the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

The operating plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. is situated at Port Pirie in South Australia and it treats to finality the whole output of lead concentrates from the mines of The Zinc Corporation Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and aroken Hill South Ltd. at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Lead bearing ores from other sources are also purchased for treatment and lead scrap and residues are treated on a toll charge basis. The present output of the plant is approximately 200000 tonnes of refined lead per annum and there is a substantial production of by-products including refined silver, gold, cadmium, antimonial lead alloys, copper matte and sulphuric acid. Recently the Company commenced the production of zinc by slag fuming and electrolysis from a six million ton dump of lead blast furnace slag, which has been accumulating at Port Pirie for over fifty years. The slag fuming plant contains two furnaces of conventional design, but features a high degree of pre-heat for the blast air and this is obtained by the use of all-metal recuperators. The raw zinc oxide fume produced by the plant is roasted in a rotary kiln prior to treatment in the leaching and electrolysis sections, which follow conventional practice for nigh current density plants. Present output is approximately 36000 tonnes of electrolytic zinc per annum.

The regular activities of the Insti¬tute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $530,000. An active effort is being made to in¬crease the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

The software systems which support the Pinto Valley Supervisory Control System are divided into three general categories. These are defined as the real-time operating system; a process data acquisition, reduction, and communication system; and a set of process-oriented systems which interface the operators and engineering staff to the process. The role of each of these three classes is reviewed. The software systems which provide reports, status displays, and trend graphs are discussed.

This paper presents two main developments: (1) a short, constantly accelerated centrifuge method of measuring drainage capillary pressure properties of cores, and (2) a new analytic method of treatment of centrifuge measurements to obtain saturation-capillary pressure relations. Toward the first objective, a clever experimental method is presented which is certainly more rapid than previous centrifuge methods. Toward the second objective, a new analytic method is derived to eliminate the approximate method of Hassler and runner. The derivation of this new analytic method, however, appears to be in error. The new analytic solution is developed as Eq. 5 in Appendix A.
