MeltiXg procedures for most metals and alloys usually include some provision for the control of oxygen, since this element frequently has some undesirable effect on the properties of the metal or alloy concerned. In the melting of the various bronzes, this is especially true, since oxygen can be introduced into the melt in a number of ways, most of which are difficult to control. In making bronzes from virgin materials, oxygen is usually present in the commercial grades of copper used; electrolytic fire-refined copper ingots usually contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent oxygen. When ingot metal or scrap bronze is used in the charge, oxides are almost always present to some degree. Under certain melting conditions and in certain types of melting equipment the atmosphere over the metal may be highly oxidizing. This, of course, may be desirable in the melting practice used, but is certain to introduce appreciable amounts of oxygen into the melt, and that may not be entirely desirable. From the foundry viewpoint oxygen may have several harmful effects on bronzes. The formation of excessive amounts of oxides may produce drossy metal, which, in turn, means dirty castings and a potentially high rejection rate. It is claimed, too, that oxides in the metal may combine with hydrogen to form steam and thereby produce porosity in certain of the bronzes. The presence of certain refractory oxides, such as SnOz, may be undesirable from the viewpoint of making machining difficult, or as possible stress-raisers in the metal matrix. It is often said that excessive oxide present in the liquid metal makes the metal run sluggishly. Since it appears impractical to try to control the amount of oxygen introduced into the metal beyond taking the economical limit of precaution about charging dirty scrap, it would seem' that control of the oxygen content of the liquid metal offers the most promising approach to this problem. This might be done by using slags, or covers, or by the use of some element or compound added to the melt to remove oxygen preferentially. Most aspects of this problem have been considered and considerable work has been done along these lines. A reconsideration of the problem is indicated, however, by the controversial nature of the evidence at hand, especially on the possibility of using a chemical deoxidizer to control the oxygen content of bronzes. Choice of Deoxidizer The choice of the chemical agent selected as a deoxidizer would naturally depend first on the alloy in which it is to ~he used: in this particular case the alloy is Navy gun metal. CHARLIE WARNER, Chairman of the Petroleum Division, is no stranger to the problems of the oil industry or to those of the Petroleum Division, after more than 25 years of experience in locating and producing oil and more than 22 years of membership in the Institute. He was born at Jefferson, N. Y.. April 27, 1894, and educated in the public schools of New York State and at Cornell University where he studied geology and allied sciences from 1913 to 1917 and received a B.A. degree. Immediately upon completion of this training, he was employed by the Empire Gas & Fuel Co. as a field geologist in Oklahoma and Kansas. Two years later he became district geologist for the Emerald Oil Co. in Oklahoma and Kansas, and in 1920 he rejoined the Empire Gas & Fuel Co. in the capacity of district geologist in Oklahoma. In September of 1921 he began his association with the Houston Oil Co. of Texas. He was district manager for the company in the Mid-Continent area until 1932 when he was transferred to the head office at Houston, where he became superintendent of the land and lease department in 1934 and was elected a director of the company in 1941. In these capacities, and also as petroleum engineer for the company, he keeps in intimate touch with all phases of field activity and with the regulation of the industry by State and Federal agencies.

The flotation behavior of quartz in the presence of alkyl ammonium acetates as a function of alkyl chain length has been interpreted in terms of hemi-micelle formation at the solid-liquid interface. The van der Waals cohesive free energy that is responsible for hemi-micelle formation has been found from these results to be 1.0 kT per CH2 group. This is in excellent agreement with literature values obtained from research on the properties of micelles in bulk systems. Collectors of the type CH3(CH2)n-2CH2-P, where P is a polar group and n is the number of carbon atoms in the straight alkyl chain, will induce flotation of an appropriate mineral at lower concentrations as n increases. This reduction in collector concentration with increasing n has been reported for such systems as xanthates on sulfides1,2 and amines on quartz.' The effect of chain length of alkyl surfactants on such solution properties as conductivity,' surface tension,' and solubility6 and such interfacial properties of solids as contact angle7 and electrokinetic potential8 have received considerable attention, but only limited quantitative descriptions of the effects have been given. The electrokinetic studies of alkyl amine salts on quartz indicated that the solution concentration of collector at which the marked change in electrokinetic potential of quartz occurs decreases systematically as the length of the alkyl chain increases. The aim of the present work was to obtain a quantitative description in terms of current theories of flotation of the effect of the hydrocarbon chain of alkyl ammonium acetates on the flotation behavior of quartz. BASIC PRINCIPLES The marked changes in electrokinetic potentials of quartz in dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) solutions were postulated to result from the association of adsorbed collector ions into two-dimensional aggregates, called hemi-micelles.9 Subsequently, the rapid increase in flotation rate of quartz was shown to coincide with hemi-micelle formation." We would like to discuss briefly the concept of hemi-micelles in terms of recent interpretations of micelles in bulk solution. Micelle hypothesis: In dilute solutions, alkyl ammonium and related salts behave as ordinary strong electrolytes, but at a certain concentration there is a marked change in physical properties of the solutions, e.g., in equivalent conductance, transport number, freezing point lowering and viscosity. To account for these phenomena, McBainl1 introduced the concept of micelles, which are aggregates of long-chain ions. It is believed that the ionic heads of the constituent ions of the micelle are in contact with water, whereas the nonpolar groups turn away from it and are in contact with each other. Work must be done to bring these charged polar groups together, but energy is gained (i.e., so called van der Waals cohesive energy) when hydrocarbon chains are expelled from the water and allowed to associate. For a given polar group, the tendency to form micelles will therefore strongly depend on the hydrocarbon chain length. Theoretical treatments of micelle formation by Shinoda12 and Phillips13 and others lead to the following expression for the concentration at which micelles form (the critical micelle concentration or cmc) in aqueous solutions of long- chain electrolytes

T HE Executive Board of the American Engineering Council held its fourth meeting at St. Louis on the first anniversary of the organizing conference which met in Washington on June 3,1920. Representatives of a number of the leading engineering organizations in the vicinity of St. Louis were present by invitation. The members of the Executive Board were guests of the Associated Engineering Societies of St. Louis. They were given a delightful ride about the city and were entertained at the Glen Echo Country Club at dinner. The special committee that had been appointed to draft resolutions to Mr. Hoover submitted the following, which were adopted : WHEREAS, our President, Herbert Hoover, has been appointed Secretary of Commerce in the Cabinet of the President of the United States, and WHEREAS, in consequence of his acceptance of this high public office, he has deemed it necessary to tender his resignation as President of The Federated American Engineering Societies.

The tellurium-rich region of the Sb-TI-Te ternary system was investigated by means of DTA, metallo-graphic, X-ray, and electron beam microprobe techniques on the sections Sb2Te3-T12Te3, SbTlTe2-Te, SbT1Te2-Sb2Te3, and SbTlTe2-T12Te3. The phase behavior of this region is summarized in terms of four ternary invariant reactions and a schematic reaction diagram is suggested. Isopleths for the sections SbT1Te2-Sb2Te3, Sb2Te,-T12Te3, and SbTlTe2-Te were constructed, and a schematic diagram of the projections of the liquidus lines and invariant planes is presented. No evidence was found to support the existence of the ternary compound "SbTlTe3", or pseudo-binary behavior of the section T12Te3-Sb2Te3, as reported by Borisova and Efremova. Electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity measurements were made at room temperature on fully annealed samples. 1 HE phase relationships in chalcogenides are often complex and difficult to resolve, particularly since the approach to equilibrium is a rather slow process. For example, the phase diagram of the T1-Te binary system was in doubt until clarified by Rabenau et al.,1 the phase fields at compositions near Bi2Te3 in the Bi-Te binary system have only recently been satisfactorily elucidated by Glatz,2 and there may still be some question as to the extent of the Sb2Te3 field in the Sb-Te system.3-5 In ternary systems, the existence of the compound "AgFeTe2" was the subject of a number of conflicting reports6-8 and the stoichiometry of the composition "AgSbTe2" was in doubt for a period of time.9 Recently, questions have arisen regarding the existence of certain compounds in the ternary systems Bi-Tl-Te10-14 and Sb-Tl-Te.15 The impetus for studies of these latter systems stemmed from the report of Borisova et a1.10 of a congruently melting ternary compound, "BiTlTe3", which apparently had extremely favorable thermoelectric properties for room-temperature cooling applications. Attempts by other investigators to produce the compound or confirm the transport properties proved to be unsuccessful.12-14 Recently, Chiang and Gluck14 reported studies of the phase relations in the tellurium-rich region of the Bi-T1-Te system which indicated that the section T12Te3-Bi2Te3 was not pseudobinary as suggested by Borisova et a1.10 The contention of Spitzer and sykes12 was supported that the composition "BiT1Te3" was multiphase, with the primary constituent actually being BiTlTe2, a compound whose existence has been well demonstrated.16,17 The investigation reported in the present paper was prompted by a later report of Borisova and Efremova15 on a similar study of the section T12Te3-Sb2Te3 from the Sb-T1-Te system. They also claimed this section to be pseudobinary, and that a ternary compound "SbTlTe," was formed peritectically. Some "preliminary" crystallographic data were given for the compound and thermoelectric transport properties were presented. In view of the questions concerning the behavior of the Bi-T1-Te system and the existence of the compound "BiT1Te3" it was suspected that the Sb-T1-Te system might behave in a similar fashion, particularly in light of the known existence of a compound SbT1Te2, iso-structural with BiT1Te2.17 Consequently, an investigation was undertaken to clarify the phase relationships in the tellurium-rich region of the Sb-T1-Te system. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of this study, including a representation of the phase relations, isopleths for various composition sections, and the determination of some phase compositions and transport properties. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Commercially available high-purity (99.999+ pct) elements, purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co., were used for the sample preparation. All samples were made from thoroughly mixed powders of previously prepared master alloys: SbTlTe2, Te, Sb2Te3, and T12Te3. Stoichiometric quantities of the constituents for each 10-g sample were weighed into a specially cleaned fused silica tube and sealed under a vacuum of better than 5 x 10-5 torr. The sealed constituents were fused and reacted at 650° to 750°C for at least 4 hr under continuous agitation in a "rocking" furnace, and the resulting product was air-cooled. The tube was opened and the sample was ground to a powder. A portion of the powder was rebottled in a DTA tube under vacuum, and the rest of the material was similarly resealed in a separate tube, re-fused in the rocking furnace, and again cooled to make the ingots for electrical and microstructural studies. All samples were subjected to further heat treatments as discussed in the section on experimental results. Each DTA tube was made of 7-mm-OD fused silica tubing with a concentric 2-mm-ID depression about 4 mm long formed in the bottom to accommodate a thermocouple. The size of a DTA sample was 0.5 to 1.0 g. An Aminco Thermoanalyzer whose accuracy was within 2°C18 was used for the DTA measurements. The metallographic samples were prepared by conventional techniques. A solution of FeCL dissolved in a methanol-HC1 mixture was found to be the most satisfactory etchant. Electron beam microprobe scanning and point-count examinations were made on polished and unetched samples using an ARL Electron Microprobe at an electron beam voltage of 20 kv. The detectors were set to receive characteristic La1 radiation. The drilling for and production of crude oil in the Lima-Indiana and Michigan fields were directly and profoundly affected by the severe strain to which the petroleum industry was subjected during the year 1931. Serious and long-continued overproduction in the large flush areas of the western and southwestern fields, coupled with a nationwide decrease in the annual rate of consumption-increase, served to precipitate ‡ This curve is the Mid-Continent price for 38" gravity crude and hence. affords a basis for estlmating the influence of general factors upon the price structure m these fields. a mid-year economic depression which was functionally reflected in every producing area in the United States. A study of the curves of price changes in portions of the central west territory (Fig. 1) will demonstrate this relationship as well as the ensuing upward trend, which developed when pressure was artificially relieved, at least for the time being, in the producing areas in the southwestern states. For zinc single crystals, xo = 3o, a surface coating raises both the cleavage and yield strengths over a large temperature range. The "brittle temperature," associated with slip after completion of twinning, does not coincide with the point of intersection of the flow and cleavage curves, which is associated with twinning. A surface film has no effect on the brittle temperature, while it lowers the intersection temperature some 20°. For crystals, yn = 83o, a coating decreases the cleavage strength, making it temperature independent, as well as increases the brittle temperature or its equivalent, the intersection temperature, 20°. These observations are described on the basis of a dislocation-pile-up-at-a-barrier model for brittle fracture; in crystals x,, = 3o the number and distribution of twins play a vital role. IN a recent investigation on the effects of solid environments on the brittle fracture of zinc single crystals,' it was demonstrated that the presence of a surface film changes the cleavage strength of these crystals, either increasing or decreasing it, depending on the crystal orientation. An increase in cleavage strength of some 43 per cent was found for coated crystals oriented x, — 3o K = 28",* while a decrease of 48 per cent was observed with crystals X" = y» — 83". The serious shortage of eastern gas coal and of coke for gas-making in Illinois and adjoining states during the winter of 1917-1918 was emphasized at the meeting of the Illinois Gas Association, March, 1918. The seriousness of the situation was of concern not merely to private interests but to the general public, which consumes gas for heating, lighting, and for important industrial uses. Some relief was thought possible if central district coals from Illinois, Indiana, and western Kentucky could be used generally as a substitute for eastern coal and coke in the manufacture of retort gas and water-gas. Already a little Illinois and Indiana coal was being used under special circumstances in Illinois retort plants and successful experiments with mixtures of Illinois coal and eastern coal had been conducted at the Decatur retort-gas plant by F. K. Ovitz of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Illinois Mining Investigations, with the advice and cooperation of a committee of the Illinois Gas Association. Consequently, it seemed desirable to continue experiments with central district coal in gas retorts, and with coal as a substitute for coke in water-gas generators, and to give publicity to the results and technical assistance to companies desiring to use central district coal. Other matters, of national importance were the prospective shortage of toluol and of ammonia for the manufacture of explosives, and the possibility of encouraging recovery of additional amounts from some of the plants in central states that were not contributing these substances. Results of work done by the Gas Section, Illinois Mining Investigations, under the advice of the Technical Committee, were pushed to early publication until the signing of the armistice lessened the importance of speed as a war measure. The first two publications listed below were distributed by the Regional Director of the U. S. Fuel Administration, through the Bureau of Gas. By-products and Public Utilities. In searching for an explanation for the obvious difference between the copper and the brass type of rolling texture, it is common practice to look for correlations with other properties. For example, there are obvious differences between copper and brass in the critical resolved shear stress, the extent of easy glide or stage I, and the amount of "overshooting)) during single-crystal deformation.' Also, the slip lines in copper are fine and wavy while those in brass are more coarse and better described as slip bands.' Since neutron irradiation is known to make these properties in copper change in such a way as to resemble brass,2'3 an excellent test for these possible correlations is to see whether neutron irradiation produces a corresponding change in the texture, i.e., whether irradiated copper develops a brass-type rolling texture. The experiment would also answer the more important question of whether or not lattice defects like those introduced by neutron irradiation have any effect on the development of rolling textures in fcc metals. Experimental studies using conventional X-ray pole figure techniques are inconvenient because the X-ray detection system must be modified to discriminate against the radioactivity which is induced in the specimen by the necessarily long exposure to neutrons. The effect of grain size and specimen dimensions on the occurrence and magnitude of a yield point drop in pure iron has been examined. The tests were done at room temperature. The results indicate that gain size is the critical factor determining whether a yield drop occurs. The specimen diameter:gain size ratio does not influence the magnitude of the yield drop for the range of gain size and specimen diameters investigated. HUTCHINSON,' petchY2 and worthington3 have investigated the grain size dependence of the upper yield stress (uUYP) and the yield point drop, ouyp - aLYP, in Armco iron, mild steel, and Si-Fe, respectively. These authors used center-annealed wires to avoid stress concentration from specimen shoulders and to ensure uniformity of the applied stress. Coarsegrained specimens show no yield point drop; the yield point drop then increases as d-'I2 increases (where d is the grain diameter). These results can be understood in terms of Petch's analysis2 in which the magnitude of amp depends on the strain rate in the (limited) number of grains deforming plastically at the upper yield point. If N grains per unit volume are undergoing plastic deformation, the strain rate in the deforming grains is l/Nd3 times higher at the upper yield stress than when the whole specimen deforms homogeneously. If N is constant and independent of grain size at uUyp, then all the grains are deforming when ~d~ = 1, so there is no yield point drop. At finer grain sizes, the yield point drop is given by: where AU, is the friction stress increase corresponding to a tenfold strain rate increase. Christ, Smith, and Burton studied the upper yield point in 0.050-in.-diam wire specimens prepared from zone-refined iron. Each end of the 2; -in. specimens was soldered to a & -in. diam steel ball and the load applied through the two balls. There was a yield point drop in specimens with grain diameters less than 0.1 mm; no drop was observed in specimens of grain diameter greater than 0.1 mm that were free from veining substructure, but specimens of grain diameter 0.129 mm, annealed in the y range, showed an upper yield point. and this was associated with the presence of a veining substructure in these specimens. Christ et al. suggested the upper yield point occurs when more than a specific number of grains fill the specimen cross section so a multiplicity of slip is required to initiate plastic deformation. Table I summarizes the published data on the grain size at which the yield drop disappears. On the basis of this data the ratio of specimen diameter:grain diameter = 5 to 27 appears to be the critical value for the occurrence of a yield point drop. Thus, petch2 interprets the appearance and magnitude of the yield point drop in terms of the limited number of grains deforming plastically at uuyp, whereas Christ et a1. consider that the occurrence of the yield drop depends on the ratio specimen diame-ter:grain diameter. The published data cover a wide variety of materials so some variation between the results is to be expected, but the size range covered in the data of Table I is rather limited. The physical composition of coal and the distribution of its physical constituents will partially determine the efficiency of the process chosen for coal preparation. Distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by preparation processes. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. These evaluations will help provide information needed for the production of coal that meets definite petrographic composition specifications. etrographic composition and degree of coalifica-tion of coal can determine the choice of cleaning processes and equipment used in coal preparation. The purpose of this paper is to present data on studies of the preparation processes of breakage, sizing, cleaning, and blending and to show the effect coal's petrographic composition has on these processes. Herrin (No. 6) and Danville (No. 7) Coals from Illinois were used in these tests. Nomenclature used herein is that approved in the Glossary of the International Committee for Coal Petrology,' based primarily on the Stopes-Heerlen system of classification2 and used in coal petrography laboratories throughout the world. BREAKAGE TESTS Breakage tests of Illinois coals related to petrographic composition have been conducted at various times at the Illinois State Geological Survey. These tests have been classified under two headings -impact tests and compression tests. Impact tests, as the name implies, consisted of breaking the coal by a sharp, sudden force. Impact tests were further divided into fall tests and block tests. Compression tests consisted of applying a constant pressure on a piece of coal until the coal fractured.

Experimental work on the properties of high-purity alloys of the copper-man-ganese-zinc system has necessarily required extensive metallographic work to determine the equilibrium conditions in this system. Previous work on these alloys is fragmentary and, unfortunately, based on alloys made with impure grades of manganese, thus introducing significant amounts of iron, silicon, aluminum and carbon. Since these elements are known to affect equilibrium conditions, it became desirable to re-examine these alloys made from the pure metals. The alpha solid solution field was of particular interest and, therefore, was chosen for the initial work, which was outlined to determine the composition limits of this field. Previous Work Heuslerl conducted an extensive survey of the liquid-solid regions of this system and also made an estimate of the solid-phase boundaries at 340°C. The pertinent part of his diagram is given in Fig. I, but it is of limited usefulness, since it applied to a single temperature only and is based on impure alloys under admittedly nonequilib- rium conditions. Bauer and Hansen,2 likewise working with impure alloys, have determined the phase boundaries for alpha-beta brasses containing small amounts of manganese and indicate an increase in the extent of the alpha field with increasing manganese. This is not in accordance with Heusler or with data obtained on pure alloys.3 They also described a third constituent precipitating in the alpha plus beta field below 350' to 400°C. but did not identify this constituent. Guillet4 and Heike and Ledibur6 have also noted this precipitate. Each of these investigators recognized that impurities present in the manganese could and did have an effect on the structure and properties of their alloys. Corson6 in particular pointed out the hardening effects of silicon, aluminum, and carbon in copper-manganese alloys and Heusler reported that his alloys containing more than 25 per cent manganese were extremely brittle. In all probability this brittleness was due to the impurities present. This early work, therefore, should be taken as a general guide for preliminary studies only, and high-purity alloys may be expected to produce different results. The work of the Bureau of Mines laboratories with electrolytic manganese has been briefly summarized by Dean7 but includes only a short section on this system. Later work3 outlined a limited portion of the alpha field in the neighborhood of 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, and 25 per cent zinc. The present work was under-

THOUGH the Geophysics Commit- tee limited itself to two sessions this year, both of them marked by a high percentage of absentee authors, even this situation failed to dampen the and or of the ebullient geophysicists, who bandied no small amount of good- humoredlv barbed discussion. Hans Lundherg offered some constructive criticism of last year's report by the Geophysics Education Commit- tee, making a plea for more training in field techniques and less insistence on rigorous theoretical training. Carl Heiland pointed out the necessity of making geophysics and geology courses more attractive in order to draw more students into these fields. Exception was taken to this line of reasoning by Father Macelwane and Sherwin F. Kelly who emphasized the necessity for sound basic training if competent geophysicists were to be turned out. This discussion developed apropos of the report of the Geophysics Education Committee, which had been postponed from the Education Division meetings, but was not read as it was available in mimeographed form.
