Studies of the effect of size of the specimen on the change of slopes of Stages I and 11 by surface removal showed that the change of Stage I was independent of size with respect to the polishing rate; however, the change in the slope of Stage 11 with polishing rate increased directly in proportion to the surface area. The removal of the surface during the test affected the plastic deformation characteristics of gold, aluminum, and zinc single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum. The apparent activation energy of aluminum was found to be decreased markedly by removing the surface during the deformation process. In previous papers1-3 it was shown that the surface played an important role in the plastic deformation of metals. By removing the surface layers of a crystal of aluminum by electrolytic polishing during tensile deformation, it was found that the slopes of Stages I, II, and III were decreased and the extents of Stages I and II were increased when the rate of metal removal was increased. By removing a sufficient amount of the surface layer after a specimen had been deformed into the Stage I region, upon reloading, the flow stress was the same as the original critical resolved shear stress and the extent of Stage I was the same as if the specimen had not been deformed previously. The slope of Stage I was decreased 50 pct and that of Stage 11 decreased 25 pct when the rate of metal removal was 50 X 10"5 ipm. These data show that in Stage I the work hardening is controlled almost entirely by the surface conditions, while in Stages 11 and III both surface conditions and internal obstacles to dislocation motion are important. It appears that during the egress of dislocations from the crystal, a fraction of them becomes stuck or trapped in the surface regions and a layer of a high dislocation concentration is formed. This layer would not only impede the motion of dislocations, but would provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. In this case, there will be a stress, opposite to that of the applied stress, imposed on the dislocation source and dislocations moving in the region beyond this layer. It has been found convenient to refer to this layer as a "debris" layer. The "debris" layer may be similar to the dislocation tangle observed by thin-film electron microscope techniques.4 Reported in this paper are the results of studies on the effects of removing the surface during plastic deformation on aluminum crystals of various sizes. The effects of the surface on the yield point behavior of gold and high-purity aluminum crystals as well as the creep behavior were also determined. The effects of surface removal on polycrystalline aluminum (1100-0 and 7075-T6) are also reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE For those portions of the investigation involving creep and tensile specimens, single crystals, having a 3-in. gage length and a nominal 1/8-in. sq cross section, were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. The single crystals were prepared from materials which had initial purities of 99.997, 99.999, 99.999, and 99.999 pct for Al, Cu, Zn, and Au, respectively. The aluminum specimens for the size effect studies were prepared through the use of a three-tier mold in which crystals having a cross section of 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in. were grown from a common seed. The mold design was arranged so that one 1/2-in. crystal, two 1/4-in. crystals, and four 1/8-in, crystals of the same orientation could be cast. With this technique, it was possible to obtain only one set of crystals with the same orientation. Because of this limitation, it was not possible to determine both the changes of extent and slope of the various stages since a large number of crystals of the same orientation would have been required. Instead, only the change of slope as a function of the rate of metal removal was studied by abruptly altering the current density of the electrolytic polishing bath at various strains within the regions of Stages I and 11. The experimental techniques used for the tensile studies were essentially the same as those used previously.1,3 The specimens were deformed in a 200-lb Instron tensile machine, usually at a rate of 10-5 sec-5. The Darwin mining district of California, 160 miles north of Los Angeles, has yielded an estimated $45 million in lead, silver, zinc, and copper since 1875. The deposits are in silicated limestone of Pennsylvanian and Permian age close to a stock of horn- blende-biotite-quartz monzonite. Steep left-lateral strike-slip faults that strike N 50" 70" E served as feeder channels for the ore solutions, and minor folds, favorable beds, and faults close to the feeder channels localized the orebodies. The orebodies are irregular, steep, pipe-like replacements that cut across bedding, bedding replacements, and fissure fillings in a calc-silicate country rock consisting mainly of wollastonite, grossularite-andradite garnet, idocrase, and diopside. Near surface the ore consists of a soft, crumbly mass of cerussite, hemimorphite, jarosite, limonite, and some secondary copper minerals. The primary ore consists of galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite with smaller amounts of andorite, matildite, scheelite, tetrahedrite, and a high silver- lead-bismuth-selenium-bearing galena.

Recently the S-curves for 30 to 40 alloy steels have been pub1ished.l.2 These steels show individual characteristics, which make each additional S-curve of great interest. There are important differences in the mechanism of the transformation process, the type of transformation product, and the influence of alloying elements. Steels of the same general alloy composition may possess such variable characteristics with regard to the length of time of isothermal transformation that an S-curve for each heat of steel may be desirable. In the present work the isothermal transformation of a steel having the following composition and grain size was studied: 0.29 per cent carbon; 0.21 manganese; 0.026 phosphorus; 0.017 sulphur; 0.056 silicon; 1.45 chromium; 3.25 nickel; austenite grain size, 7. The progress of the isothermal transformation was followed by several different methods, including hardness measurements, dilatometer observations, and examinations of the microstructure. It was not expected that these methods would be in precise agreement.3 Accordingly, the changes in microstructure and hardness were given additional weight in determining the initial stage of transformation and the dilatometer measurements were relied on in estimating the completion of the process. The beginning of transformation was indicated by I per cent of transformation products and the end of transformation by about 99 per cent. The reproducibility of the various methods in the ranges of highest sensitivity was checked by several observations at each time and temperature. The steel used in this investigation was annealed for 24 hr, at 925°C. Macroetching revealed no serious segregation. The specimens for the metallographic and hardness investigations were 1¼ by ½ by ? in. Wires attached to the samples were used for handling. instead of tongs, to avoid chilling. The specimens were heated at 845°C. for ½ hr. and quenched into constant-temperature salt baths held at various temperatures from 205' to 650°C. The time required to transfer the specimens was found to be about 1½ sec., and nearly 5 sec. more was required for them to come to the temperature of the bath. After various lengths of time in the constant-temperature baths the specimens were quenched in water at 2I°C. The specimens were cut in half for the metallographic examination, to provide a surface free from decarburization. To determine the beginning and end of the transformation the percentage of transformation determined metallographically and by hardness was plotted against time. A planimeter was used in the metallographic determination. The hardness and metallographic determinations made at room temperature were confirmed reasonably well by dilatometer measurements taken during the process of transformation at the various temperatures. Chemical processing is descended from alchemy, which developed our major lixivants. The profession might have done more if it had been less preoccupied with turning base metals into gold-a process that still hasn't been developed. Georg Agricola, over 400 years ago, gave us ten recipes for "aqua valens" to part gold and silver, and described cementation of gold and silver on base metals. His text stood for 200 years, by which time heap roasting, leaching and cementation were winning copper from pyrites at Rio Tinto and the Barba furnace was distilling mercury from the ores of Almaden.

The Cuajone Concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corp. is located approximately 900 km southeast of Lima, Peru, near the 500 year old town of Moquegua, in an area that has been occupied since antiquity since the plant was started in July, 1976, the throughput has steadily increased from 36 to 46 kt/d (50,7055tpd). The widely distributed molybdenite content of the ore body ranges from 0.02-0.4% MoS2. The molybdenite content of the copper concentrate has always been sufficient to justify operation of a byproduct molybdenite plant. During the first nine months of 1980, the average grade of the ore was 1.169% copper and 0.026% molybdenite. Pilot plant testing conducted during 1970 at Toquepala, Cuajone's sister plant, determined that the recovery of the molybdenite into a salable concentrate could be accomplished relatively easily by using the Asmol process. Experience gained at Toquepala, which converted to Asmol in 1969, confirmed the simplicity of process. Simplicity of operation was one of the major criteria for the process selection because, at the time, it was expected that the molybdenite plant would start up concurrently with the copper concentrator. Other processes studied either produced inferior results or were judged more difficult to operate. However, geological information indicated that the molybdenite content of the ore would be relatively low for the first couple of years of operation, so the design and construction of the plant was delayed until after the copper plant was in production. Asmol remained the process selection. During 1976 and 1977, the flowsheet and plant layout based on pilot plant data, new results obtained from Cuajone's metallurgical laboratory, and process improvements from Toquepala's experience were completed. One of the more important innovations from the Cuajone laboratory was that the Asmol consumption could be substantially reduced by replacing air with nitrogen gas in the rougher and first cleaner flotation steps

AN electronic data-processing system is described which permits rapid, accurate, low-cost processing of strain-dependent damping data utilizing equipment normally available within the service facilities of most large laboratories. On analyzing the record of a stress-dependent damping test, the operator usually measures the double amplitudes at several points on the decay curve. The logarithmic decrement is then calculated for decay between consecutive amplitudes. These values of 6 are plotted against the corresponding maximum surface shear stress, T, which is proportional to the average of the two amplitudes between which is calculated: where d is the specimen diameter. The period of the vibration is not necessarily constant during decay; thus, each cycle must be counted. A decay curve may extend to, perhaps, 1000 cycles, and at least two curves are always obtained for each specimen or set of conditions. It can, therefore, be seen that manual analysis of decay curves is both tedious and costly in terms of man-hours. A 2000-ton ammonia leaching plant has been operated by the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., at Lake Linden, Mich., continuously since February, 1917, except from April, 1921, to April, 1922, during the period of depression following the European war. A description of this plant has been published elsewhere.1 The present article describes the operation of the plant since 1917, together with the changes in the process that have been found to be advisable. In spite of the fact that this plant and that of the Kennecott Copper Co. are the only ones operating on a large scale, much experimental work is being done on ammonia leaching, as applied to oxidized ores, and it is to aid these and other investigators that this detailed account is given. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the original article, the following short abstract is given, as an introduction to a more detailed account of the process and the reasons for present practice.

Mankind's progress is measured in minerals. Man's emergence from prehistory is marked by passage through a Stone Age and a Bronze Age and into the present era, sometimes called the Iron Age or the Age of Metals. With the evolution of civilization and the development of a modem industrial economy, minerals become more and more important. Structures, roads, and machines are built largely of minerals; the energy to heat the structures and to drive the machines is mostly mineral; agricultural fertility is maintained by mineral fertilizers and water; and military strength is provided by fortresses, armaments, and munitions, largely of mineral origin. Thus in the material world, in the productivity of the economy, access to minerals has paramount importance. Every evidence indicates increasing dependence on minerals in the modem economy, particularly on the mineral fuels as energy sources to provide the power base for advancing industrialization. Both the total and the per capita consumption of almost every mineral is increasing in the industrialized nations. Moreover, nations with predominantly agrarian economies call themselves underdeveloped and universally strive to industrialize. Most mineral consumption trends in the more advanced economies have been greatly exceeding population growth-which itself has been advancing at an accelerating rate-and sometimes have surpassed the growth in real income. Some minerals have only recently been adopted or grown to importance in use. Titanium metal did not appear as a commercial product until 1948, and even coal seriously displaced wood as a source of heat less than two centuries ago. On the other hand, minerals have always played an important role in construction. The prehistoric megaliths that form the dolmens of Salisbury Plain are stone; the pyramids are andesite faced with limestone; and many other ancient structures are built of mineral materials. The nature and comparative features of anthracite and bituminous coals have been discussed by the writer in two previous papers.' Although this paper is offered as a further contribution to the subject, it seems desirable at the outset to repeat some of the descriptive matter of the early works in order to show the actual connection between various constituents of both coals and the new photomicrographs and other physical and chemical properties. Structure of Anthracite and Bituminous Coals A lump of bituminous coal (Fig. 1) is readily seen to be composed of layers differing from one another in texture, luster and thickness. There are, in general, three kinds of layers, although only two are usually seen. One is deep black, very compact, and has a bright luster; another is grayish black, has a duller luster and is less compact; the third is black, dull and porous in appearance, but because of its thinness is not often seen except on parting surfaces. This last material is charcoal. American students of coal morphology use the names anthraxylon, attritus, and fusain to designate these three constituents of laminated coal. Anthraxylon refers to the brightest bands, attritus to the duller layers, and fusain to the charcoal. Close examination of a lump of bituminous coal shows the brightest deep black layers to be embedded in the duller grayish black laminae. These deep black layers are lens-shaped and vary in thickness from thin sheets to over half an inch. They are often so continuous through the lump that their tapering terminae are not noticeable. On careful examination the duller grayish black laminae (Fig. 7) are seen to contain many very thin sheets of this very bright black material. The charcoal

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) THE Fushun coal-field, now being opened up by the South Manchurian Railway Co., is connected with the main line by a branch, 30 miles long, from Sui Chia Tun, 10 miles south of Mukden, the capital of Manchuria. The coal-field, which lies on the southern bank of the Hun river, 25 miles east of Mukden, consists of a long narrow valley,. running east and west between hills composed of granitic and volcanic rocks. At the foot of the northern hills, the Hun river flows westward towards the Liao river, which drains the greater part of South Manchuria. At the foot of the southern hills, resting immediately upon volcanic rocks, and overlain by 20 ft. of alluvial, is a thick layer of Tertiary shales, carrying near the base two coal-seams. In many places the lower of these two seams is in immediate contact with volcanic lauds and basalts, the flows of which were evidently both prior and subsequent to the formation of the coal-seams. This contact has practically destroyed the lower seam for commercial purposes. The value of the field lies in the upper seam, which, for a length of nearly 8 miles, varies from 100 to 130 ft. thick. Of this seam, 85 per cent is good coal. The seam dips to the north conformably with the shales, at angles of from 25° to 30°, and appears to have an uninterrupted dip for about 1.5 miles before being possibly cut o$' by the northern hills. The coal-bearing shales extend east and west for a length of about 20 miles, but towards the east the continuity of the seams is broken by intrusive rocks. The coal is of the sub-bituminous variety, low in ash, bright in appearance, and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. THE rate of elimination of carbon largely controls the time required to make a heat of steel by the basic open-hearth process and to an important degree determines the cost of refining. Practical experience has led to the generally accepted belief that the use of slags relatively high in iron oxide, such as are required to bring about rapid refining, leads to a certain sacrifice of quality in the product. As a consequence, a compromise must be made between the exceedingly slow rate of carbon drop which would correspond to the ideal case and the rapid rate which would best satisfy the condition of minimum cost. An increase in rate of refining necessarily implies an increase in the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. However, even for the infinitely slow rate that corresponds to slag-metal equilibrium, the metal would contain a certain definite concentration of dissolved iron oxide. It is a matter of great practical importance, therefore, to determine the quantitative relation between the minimum or equilibrium concentration of iron oxide in the metal and the higher concentrations which must actually obtain in practice. The present paper is devoted to the development of certain equations, derived from the established laws of physical chemistry, which will enable this relation between rate of refining and the degree of oxidation of the metal bath to be computed from operating data. No attempt is made to exhaust the possibilities of this general method of treatment. In considering rate of refining, attention is mainly confined to rate of carbon elimination. However, the equations are of a more general nature and their application may readily be extended. The results of the preliminary calculations given herein indicate that increased rate of refining may have a decided effect in increasing the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The uncertainty. which attaches to the calculated value for this relationship arises in part from probable errors in experimental data on which the calculations are based, and in part from the lack of complete or favorably disposed information on basic open-hearth practice.

The anomalous indentation creep of nonmetallic solids is shown to be due to the presence of adsorbed water. Although a specific mechanism is not proposed, it is suggested that the water may be present in two chemically adsorbed states. DEPENDENCE of the indentation hardness of solids on the time of load application was first studied systematically by Hargreaves1 in a study of lead and certain low-melting alloys. This technique has become known as indentation creep and has been exploited particularly by underwood and by Mulhearn and Tabor3 as well as by others.4°7 For metals good correlations have been found between the time dependence of hardness over several orders of magnitude in the seconds range and creep parameters from conventional tests at the same temperature where creep strains were measured over hundreds or thousands of hours. However, Walker and Demer8 and Mitsche and Onitsch9 observed extensive indentation creep at room temperature (particularly for light loads) in certain minerals and in materials such as lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide for which conventional creep is ordinarily not observable unless the testing temperature is at a very much higher fraction of the melting point. Normal behavior was observed' for metals such as copper, i.e., negligible time-dependent flow during room-temperature indentation. Walker and Demer attempted to find some distinctive difference in the surface deformation markings about indentations in the anomalously behaving materials at short and very long indentation times. No significant differences were observed. Increased duration of loading was found, however, to result in an increase in the length of glide of edge-dislocation loops extending into the interior of the crystal. A drop calorimeter system is described for use in measuring enthalpies to 3600°K. Data are presented for tungsten between 2800" and 3600°K. The enthalpy of tungsten in cal per mole between 2000° and 3600°K can be represented by the equation HºT- Hº298 = - 1.7622 X 103 + 5.7772T + 8.9861 where T is in degrees Kelvin. A tabulation of com -puted values is presented for heat capacity, entropy, and free energy function. A drop calorimeter has been constructed to carry out enthalpy measurements at temperatures to 3600°K. Samples are heated by induction1 and dropped into a commercial adiabatic calorimeter, modified for this purpose. The experimental temperature is limited by the melting point of container materials and compatibility of the container and its contents. Several high-temperature drop calorimeters have been described in the literature1-5 but none has been used at temperatures as high as those in the present work; our measurements of the enthalpy of tungsten range from 2800" to 3600°K. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT An overall schematic view of the equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Power for the induction coil is supplied by a 25-kw 250 kHz Ther-Monic generator coupled to an iron core RF transformer. The Sample capsule is suspended in the work coil by 10-mil diam tungsten wires which are wrapped around a horizontal 5-mil diam tungsten wire. The horizontal suspension wire is clamped between two massive copper electrodes which are fixed in an x-y motion device that allows adjustment of the position of the heated capsule from outside the vacuum chamber. The copper electrodes are connected by flexible copper straps to a 1250-joule (5 kv, 100 pfarad) condenser bank. When it is desired to release the capsule, the condensers are discharged through the horizontal suspension wire causing it to vaporize rapidly. Very reliable and precise release of the capsule is achieved in this manner. Experiments have shown that no heat correction is required for this discharge energy. As part of the temperature measuring system, two prism holders have been incorporated in the apparatus. The upper prism holder is in the main vacuum chamber itself, whereas the lower one is in a side arm attached to the drop tube below the gate valve. The upper prism is mounted on a rotary vacuum feed-through, and may be moved under a protective shield when not in use. This prevents deposition of vapors on the prism surfaces when temperature measurements are not being made. Similarly, the lower prism is mounted on a push-pull vacuum feed-through, and when not in use may be pulled into its side tube. The prism mountings are fitted with guides and stops so that they may be moved precisely into the desired position. The aim throughout is to minimize the time the prisms are exposed to vapors from the hot samples. At the high temperatures reported in this paper, only the lower prism was used. The upper prism holder in these cases was fitted with an additional radiation shield. By using a prism and viewport, the lower surface of the samples can be observed by an optical pyrometer. The measurements discussed in this paper were obtained with a Leeds and Northrup 8622-C-S series manual pyrometer which is estimated to be accurate to 0.5 pct. Pyrometer calibrations and prism and window corrections were carried out in the conventional manner6 using tungsten strip lamps calibrated by the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, England. Prism corrections were rechecked after each use. All work to date has been done in vacuum, and no measurable change has been observed in the prism correction below -2300°K for the upper prism and below -2800°K for the lower one. The total time of exposure of the prisms is about 50 sec per run. At high temperature, the final temperature reading is corrected by using the final A value for the prism; see Ref. 6 for details of this procedure. The calorimeter is a modified Parr Instrument Co. (Moline, lll.), Series 1230 adiabatic calorimeter with automatic jacket control. Other authors5 have used a similar calorimeter with good results. The calorimeter jacket cover and calorimeter cover are attached to the drop tube which contains a radiation shield. This shield is a gold-plated copper disc which can be operated manually from outside the calorimeter. The receiver is attached below the radiation shield and is lined with tungsten. In a typical experiment, the calorimeter and its jacket water temperatures were adjusted to 0.000°K temperature difference. The sample was allowed to equilibrate in the furnace at the desired temperature for about 20 min. The initial calorimeter temperature was then recorded, the sample dropped, and appropriate shutters closed. After about 3 min, the drop tube and receiver were filled with helium to 60 torr. The final calorimeter temperature was recorded after it had remained constant over a 5-min period. The equilibration time in the calorimeter was about 25 min. Thermistor probes are used to operate a hot and cold water supply system to maintain the jacket temperature equal to the calorimeter temperature. For actual measurements of the calorimeter temperatures, a quartz thermometer was used (Hewlett Packard Dymec Thermometer, Model #2801A). This thermome-

The paper discusses simultaneous heat conduction and diffusion. These problems may arise in slag-metal kinetics and in connection with rapid heating or cooling of specimens. A mathematical formulation is given and it is shown that the transients due to either the variability of the diffusion coefficient with temperature, or thermal diffusion, are unlikely to be important for molten or solid metals and slags. The negligibility of these effects is due to the large values of the ratio thermal diffu-sivity/molecular diffusivity. In many problems relating to transport-controlled metallurgical kinetics the diffusion process is accompanied by the transfer of heat; large-scale metal refining or metal reduction may be quoted as examples. It has been shown that due to turbulent mixing in these systems the relevant transport phe- nomena are best described in terms of "surface renewal models" which require the solution of the unsteady-state diffusion equation.1-1 Problems involving simultaneous diffusion and heat conduction are also encountered in the laboratory in connection with rapid heating or cooling of specimens. The effect of variable temperature on diffusion may be twofold: a) in the absence of "cross effects" the problem, due to variable temperature, is that of diffusion with a variable diffusion coefficient; b) if the Soret Effect is nonzero, thermal diffusion must also be taken into account in the formulation. Although information is available on thermal-diffusion transients in a steady-temperature gradient,4'5 little work has been done on the effect of unsteady temperatures on either the diffusion coefficient or on thermal diffusion.' In the following a formulation is given and solutions presented with a view of examining the areas where these effects may be important.

The deepening of the General Crude Oil Company's No. 1 Meyers, NE. NE. SE. of sec. 22, 24S., 36E., in the Cooper area of Lea County, in April, 1934, resulted in the discovery of an oil field of major importance. The discovery well is an old well drilled by Cranfill $ Reynolds and completed in July, 1929, in limestone at 3438 ft. for an initial production of 90,000,000 cu. ft. (estimated) of 'gas. Deepening operations were started early in April, 1934, and cores were taken from the old total depth of 3438 to 3508 ft. A Haliburton test taken through the drill stem at 3439 to 3460 ft. showed 50,000,000 cu. ft. of gas with an increase of 5,000,000 cu. ft. between 3461 and 3474 ft. When completed the well tested 12,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 5000 bbl. of oil at 3474-3508 feet. The new oil field—the result of this discovery—is between the Eunice and the Jal fields, closer to the productive area of Jal than to that of Eunice but far enough away from both to be considered a separate area. Eventually, all of these pools may be joined together by productive oil wells to form a single unit of large size. They lie in a general northwest-southeast alignment and the intervening areas have not been condemned by dry holes.
