Over the past few years developments in heavy minerals processing have concentrated on the mineral separation portion of the business. The best example of this would include new developments in rare-earth magnetic separators and associated flowsheet modifications. Except for some minor modifications in spirals, the æwetÆ side of the separation business has lagged behind the ædryÆ side. Basic concentrator design has not changed in 20 years. Recent pilot trials by Outokumpu Technology have shown the benefits of a new gravity flowsheet that combines density separation and spiral concentration on a variety of heavy mineral deposits. This concept is already well utilised within the iron ore industry. The synergistic combination of these two technologies allows smaller, simpler, and controllable gravity concentrators to be built while providing equivalent or better grade and recoveries of valuable heavy mineral. This is contrasted to the all spiral flowsheet characterised by the diminishing returns of multiple stages of spirals and associated recirculating loads. Examples of the flowsheets and associated benefits will be presented from a variety of cases.

Exploration, including research, has fuelled the enormous expansion of the Australian mineral industry in the last three decades. Analysis of success and failure in exploration and research has therefore potentially powerful lessons and messages which may be used to influence the future shape and direction of the mineral industry. Research has been an integral part of organised corporate mineral exploration since its beginnings in Australia in the 1930s. In corporations, the activity generally called project generation or new project development is the main expression of exploration research but mostly it goes unidentified and poorly documented except perhaps when a successful discovery is made and reported on. The competitive nature of exploration means that extended and detailed analysis of corporate exploration research across the industry is impossible to achieve.

An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period. The figures for last year, 1940, were not quite so good, being 101,000 tons for approximately 60,000 fine oz., valued in Australian currency at £572,000.In spite of this drop the State Battery system maintained its position as fourth in order of gold output for the State.The extractions, as a whole, throughout the system, were 92·54%, made up of 68·86% by amalgamation and 23·68% by cyanidation. These figures, for a group of 20 plants treating widely different classes of ore, must be considered satisfactory. The total production since inception is over £11,000,000 in Australian currency.State Batteries are usually more or less of a standard design. Ore is reduced to about 2i in. maximum size before being sent to the bins. Challenge automatic feeeders control the feed to each mill unit, amalgamated copper plates collect the free gold. Corduroy strakes are used with some ores after amalgamation, but in only a few cases has this been found of any advantage to the customer.The pulp from the battery is sampled, after leaving the tables, with a "Tazewell" sampler and pumped to dams for subsequent cyanide treatment.The "Tazewell" sampler is a machine driven by the moving pulp; and takes about fifteen dips per .minute from such pulp through a slotted...

A typical high silica low grade magnesite from the Salem area of Southern India, was used in studies to develop a suitable flotation system involving commercially inexpensive sodium oleate as the collector together with other reagents which can give a product of the required grade with an acceptable recovery. It was found that the presence of metallic ions such as Cu+, Fe+++ or Ca++ introduced by the addition of their salts, or by their formation with the addition of hydrochloric acid to react with magnesium and calcium carbonate in the me, can act as effective depressants for silica. The addition of 'hydrochloric acid' was found to give best results.

The contiguous Kotre Basantpur and Pachmo (KBP) coal blocks in the Hazaribagh District of Jharkhand State in east India are being developed by Tata Steel Limited (Tata Steel) to supply coking coal to a new steel mill at Kalinganagar in Orissa.The planning challenges are many. The multiple coal seams range in thickness up to 6 m and extend to nearly 500 m depth, with dips up to 25¦ and highly variable quality. Several normal faults with throws up to 150 m intersect the deposit. There is little room for waste dumping on the lease, several large nalas (seasonal creeks) cross the blocks, and the KBP leases are not contiguous with Tata Steel's existing mining operations at West Bokaro. Geotechnical conditions, while not well defined at this stage, are largely unfavourable. There are several villages on the blocks, and extensive paddy fields. In 2009, Adelaide Mining Consultants Pty Ltd (AMC) completed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a production level of 8 Mt/a. A terrace mining system was proposed using 28 m3 hydraulic excavators and 185 t trucks working horizontal up-dip slices. Subsequently the viability of in-pit crushing and conveying was assessed, but the full results were not available for this paper.It is planned to extract a total of 147 Mt of raw coal at a strip ratio of 5.2 bank cubic metres per tonne (bcm/t). The planned maximum pit depth is over 300 m.The project includes a washery, a 2 + 25 MW fluidised bed power station to utilise all the coarse washery rejects, and a railway spur line to carry the washed coal to the railhead some 7 km distant.

The main factors which influence disposal of mine waste under New Zealand conditions are identified and discussed: namely, geological conditions which produce soft weather-sensitive waste, wet and cold winters which affect productivity in such waste, elevated seismicity which affects stability and the need for water rights which involve public participation. The waste disposal scheme for the Martha Hill Project is described, thereby illustrating how these factors influence the planning of a current mine strippings and tailings disposal scheme.

In the iron ore industry significant emphasis is placed throughout the mining process on meeting chemical composition specifications for the export of fine ores, however, little has been published on the implications of ore chemical composition for iron ore sinter and pellet product quality. The ore bulk composition, together with the nature of the minerals in the fine ore both play a critical role in determining the type of high temperature bonding phases that form during sintering and pelletising. This paper uses the experimental determination of phase relations in model sinter and pellet systems such as Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 (FCS) and Fe2O3-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 (FACS) to examine the links between iron ore chemical composition and the temperatures used during sintering and pellet firing. The phase relations help to establish the critical thermal and compositional parameters that control the bonding phase chemistry which in turn influences the physical characteristics of the sinter or pellet matrix. Most epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are hosted in late Miocene andesites. Broken Hills is an exception, being one of the few economic deposits hosted in rhyolite. Investigation of Broken Hills provides the opportunity to collate structural data that may be compared with that collected from andesite-hosted deposits in order to evaluate the importance of rock type on vein development. The rhyolite host rock at Broken Hills is strongly flow-banded, but this anisotropy does not appear to affect the orientation of mineralised structures. There is a range of structures at Broken Hills: veins, faults, fractures, and large breccia pipes. Veins generally strike north-south, with localised changes in strike and thickness. Slip vectors determined from striations indicate near pure dipslip on the main lode, indicating an extensional tectonic setting. The orientations of vein deflections are parallel to slip vectors. This correlation is common in modern extensional fault arrays where fault growth and linkage produces subvertical deflections in fault orientation (eg TVZ). There are three main types of breccias: 1. Primary breccias related to rhyolite emplacement. 2. Jigsaw type secondary breccias that are that developed during the life of the hydrothermal system. 3. Breccia pipes. Broken Hills was a dynamic epithermal mineralising system.

The great problem at Port Pirie and many other lead smelters has always been to keep the lead content of the slags down to a low level. This has been done in the past largely by empirical methods, the lead content varying from less than 1 per cent to over 4 per cent, the more usual figure being something under 2 per cent. Subsidiary to this, but of major importance in the future, was the extraction of the considerable quantities of zinc in the slag. At this stage little was known about the constitution of the slags apartfrom their chemical composition. Some early work on slag constitution was carried out in the B.H.A.S. Research Laboratories between 1919 and 1921, but except for a microscopic examination of a few thin sections the greater part of this investigation wasdevoted to the recovery of the zinc content of the slag by leaching methods.In 1949, therefore, it was decided to initiate a programme of fundamental research into the constitution and properties of the lead blast furnace slags. The information thus gained would give a clearer picture of reactions taking place in the slag, both in the blast furnace and during dezincing.There was also the hope that these results would lead to improved industrial techniques resulting in smaller lead losses, and, taking the long-term view, to efficient methods of producing zinc from the slags.A series of investigations was therefore begun at various centres over a period of time. A new process for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates with gaseous mixtures of SO2 and O2 in aqueous solution is described.The reaction of SO2/O2 with Rosebery, Mt. Isa, Broken Hill and Elura zinc concentrates yields zinc and iron sulphates, elemental sulphur and some sulphuric acid. Rates of zinc extraction are controlled by a surface chemical reaction without apparent interference from the elemental sulphur layer for SO2 concentrations up to 9 per cent in the gas phase. Pyrite in concentrate exerts an activating effect, possibly through galvanic interaction with the sphalerite. Metal extractions are dependent on SO2 and O2 tenors of the gas, particle size, and the acidity and zinc content of the solution, but are independent of the ferric ion level. Extractions also reach maxima at about 85°C.Generation of acid may be prevented by conducting the reaction in the presence of ferrous iron and at acidities of 40 g/l or greater. Zinc and iron levels in Elura lead concentrate may be reduced by leaching with SO2/O2.

In the present study, formation of PCDD/Fs from carbon particles like æsootÆ, so called de novo synthesis, was experimentally simulated using the powder mixture of graphite and metallic chloride. Composite states of graphite and chloride particles were varied by the preliminary treatment, ie high-energy ball milling for different time or heating at different temperatures. These samples were subjected to the measurement of the rates of weight loss mainly due to the oxidation of carbon, the formation of absorbent organic chlorides (AOX) and the formation of PCDD/Fs at 300¦C. The amount of PCDD/Fs formation increased by applying certain pretreatments. Further, linear relationships were obtained among the formation rates of PCDD/Fs and AOX and the weight loss of sample. These results will give useful information to investigate the mechanism of PCDD/Fs formation from unburned combustible carbon and hydrocarbon in thermal processes.

"The SUSOP« Framework is a new technique that helps incorporate sustainable development principles and objectives into the design and operation of businesses. Developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, it brings a design methodology to sustainability, similar to what hazard and risk techniques such as HAZOP did for safety.Metallica Minerals Limited (æMetallicaÆ) adopted the SUSOP« framework to help identify opportunities and risks that could directly improve or affect its flagship SCONI (nickel-cobalt and scandium) project. This project has the potential to become the worldÆs largest producer of scandium oxide (æscandiaÆ) which is used in solid oxide fuel cells and strengthens aluminium alloys. Located northwest of Townsville in Queensland, the plant site will be located within the previously mined and partially rehabilitated Greenvale Nickel Mine. By applying the SUSOP« framework through a series of multi-disciplinary workshops and offline analysis, Metallica was able to identify numerous sustainability opportunities and risks. Opportunities were clustered together to form concepts to develop a more holistic understanding of the projectÆs overall potential contribution to sustainable development as well as determine where key risks could be mitigated. Four key concepts were identified: Waste and Water Workforce Community and Enterprise Development Energy and Greenhouse Gases (GHG). Metallica was able to include a range of initiatives that could deliver enhanced environmental, social and community outcomes into their mine development plan. These included measures to reduce reliance on water, reduce the volume of waste, provide local opportunities for training and skilled employment and create support for local enterprise development. These measures also resulted in a significant reduction in the capital estimate of the project.This paper provides an overview of the SUSOP« framework, details its application to the SCONI project and discusses the outcomes that will help establish the projectÆs strong sustainable development credentials and improved business outcomes.CITATION:Corder, G, Currey, N and Becker, G, 2013. Physically-based landform evolution models (LEM) provide a spatial framework to forecast the long-term geomorphic stability of post-mining landscapes. When used to test the relative stability of different landform designs, LEMs may assist with the development of optimal closure designs for rehabilitated mines. However, in order to reduce prediction error, factors controlling landscape evolution must also be accurately represented by models. This requires that the correct sets of processes are represented and that driving parameters used in LEMs are, if necessary, calibrated to the landscape of interest.Vegetation exerts strong controls on the hydrologic and geomorphic processes that drive landscape evolution. Hence, the spatial and temporal scales over which typical patterns in vegetation are represented in different landscapes are important considerations in LEM calibration. However, vegetation is rarely accounted for in LEMs and even when integrated is often represented simply, without representing spatial dynamics of vegetation cover that may impact landform development.This study focuses on characterising vegetation patterns to calibrate a new vegetation module of the The Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR)-Lisflood LEM to be applied to a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger uranium mine located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) of northern Australia. In the ARR the spatial dynamics of vegetation over time are largely driven by monsoonal rains and topography. Extensive dry season fires are also common in the region, temporarily reducing vegetation cover where they occur. Hence, hydrology, topography and fire disturbance interact to shape a distinct, yet dynamic, mosaic of different vegetation types of varying cover density. Well planned and executed environmental management plans can reduce life-of-mine operating costs and the need to deal with major environmental issues at the time of mine closure. With proper planning during the exploration, feasibility and execution phases of a project, final closure costs can be reduced. The reduction of closure costs should be considered during exploration and initial feasibility studies and when process facilities, waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments are designed. During the mining of the resource, closure cost reduction will depend on effective and efficient environmental management plans for ongoing land clearance, segregation of mine waste materials, management of mine site water and workshop wastewaters, and the establishment of progressive rehabilitation strategies. These issues are the responsibility of planning, production, technical support and maintenance personnel at an operating site. The successful implementation of environmental plans will ensure that all impacts are reduced and that closure issues with major cost implications are addressed prior to closure of the mine.

The Wolgan Seam of the Upper Permian IlIawarra Coal Measures of the Western Coalfield of New South Wales consists of high volatile, low sulphur, medium hard coking coal with high fluidity. This seam, 1·8-2·4m thick, in the Wolgan area, dips gently at 1°_20 ENE and lies at 160-440m below the deeply dissected surface of the western margin of the Blue Mountains plateau.A detailed study of the deposit has revealed that the Wolgan Seam consists of four main coal plies separated by three distinct stone bands. Each of these subunits is lenticular and displays individual physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics which exhibit distinct spatial distribution patterns across the area. Most noticeable is the presence of long linear ESE-trending zones of low ash - high volatiles - high fixed carbon - high fluidity which delineate the major distributary pattern within the deltaic environment of coal formation.This seam contains some of the highest fluidity coal in the world.The Wolgan area, close to the western margin of the Sydney Basin, is characterized by:I. a regional, closely spaced, homogenous joint fracture pattern dominated by an orthogonal pair set trending 3400 and 0700, to which the face- and butt-cleat directions respectively of the Wolgan Seam are sub-parallel, and2. a more widely spaced, heterogenous, cross-cutting pattern of regional structural fractures. Zones of bad roof conditions are probably associated with these lineaments which are subvertical and trend in three majordirections, viz., 005°,035° and 115°.
