The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Microprobe analyses.of sphalerite grains from the Waitangi deposit mostly range from 0.8 to 1.5 mole % FeS, although one sample contains 9.5 mole % FeS. Arsenopyrite from Waitangi yields a range from 33.1 to 34.6 atomic As (%). There is no discernible correlation between the FeS content of sphalerite and gold grade in the Waitangi deposit suggesting that gold deposition is probably not controlled by changes in temperature and activity of sulphur aS2 that control the FeS content of sphalerite. The possible causes for gold deposition are thought to be boiling, mixing and changes in pH. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-ehalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of d34SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë;n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source. However, the source of light sulphur in the late pyrite grains is not known. Preliminary fluid inclusion+studies indicate homogenisation temperatures between 173¦ and 284¦C and salinities of 0.23.0 NaCI equiv. wt % (uncorrected for C02). Vein quartz at Waitangi yields d18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1-5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in d18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that d18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

Maintaining high carbon activity is vital to the efficiency of any Carbon-In-Leach or Carbon-In-Pulp process. Reduced activity can lead to longer residence times or gold losses in the tails. Regenerated carbon from the CIL circuit at Macraes Gold Mine was analysed for kinetic activity and composition over a 15 month period. An increase in kinetic activity during the time period was recorded, which was linked to reduced Na and Ca loadings. A laboratory simulation of the loading, stripping and regeneration of gold was developed and tested. Kinetic activities were obtained for synthetically fouled carbons following three circuits of the laboratory simulation. It was shown the competitive gold adsorption ability of xanthate fouled carbon (previously reported as a serious deactivator) could be significantly recovered following effective thermal regeneration. This ability was maintained in a subsequent circuit loading.

Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

Willyamite from the type locality, Consols mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W., has been re-examined, and found to consist of zones with widely different Co:Ni ratios. The name willyamite is redefined to include the portion of the (Co, Ni)SbS series with cobalt in excess of nickel. Willyamite is pseudo-cubic, with the three axes equal to within 0·001 A.

Ledcap Pty Ltd has developed two software tools for assisting in the determination of life-of-mine (LOM) trucking requirements. The first tool generates haul paths and the second calculates truck travel time over these paths. The two step approach allows the paths to be viewed and if required edited, to better represent the actual site haul routes.The first tool automatically creates haul paths between the mine bench and the dump. To do this the user supplies a master haul route and a scheduled block model. The master haul path and the block model are interacted to create multiple haul routes, one for each pit/dump bench pair in each scheduling period. Each path carries with it a record of the scheduling period it represents and the dry tonnage hauled over the path in that period.The second tool calculates truck travel time over the path. Data from the manufacturer's rimpull and retarder curves are used to calculate accelerations and speed over each segment of the haul path. As the paths are derived from digitised representations of mine haul routes the path f les often have over a hundred segments. This detailed representation of the haul route allows the software to automatically adjust speed for different radius corners and accurately simulates the changing accelerations over the gradient changes that occur in real life mine ramps. Rolling resistance can be specified at a global level, at a segment level and at a period level. This allows rolling resistance to be changed seasonally as well as spatially.Life-of-mine trucking studies attempt to calculate an accurate answer from extremely variable inputs. This paper will detail the features of the two software tools and how the tools provided in the software can assist the mine planner to have greater confidence in their life-of-mine trucking requirements and the subsequent production capacity inputs to their scheduling calculations.

"It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (<1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month. The model is then extended to demonstrate the effect of varying head grade, mixing and pod (or diversion) weight on bulk sorting efficiency.CITATION:Coghill, P J, Miljak, D, McGann, A, 2016. Western New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted continuation of eastern Australia. Detailed studies of units previously considered to have trans-Tasman correlations are being undertaken within the FRST Programme Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ to test specific connections, and thus add to the exploration framework of NZ. Correlation of two major episodes of granitic magmatism are currently being investigated. These represent the oldest (mid Paleozoic) and youngest (Early Cretaceous) magmatic events that conjoined Australia and New Zealand are believed to have in common.

Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of youngerPacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

This paper will introduce some innovative strategies for simulator training that are intended to improve the level of safety and operational performance of heavy equipment operators. The key strategy is to design simulator training to deliver improved work performance outcomes. This strategy is underpinned by a process for engaging workers in knowledge discovery and transfer that has been developed as an outcome of an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded project conducted at open cut coal mines in Australia. The process is expected to deliver improvements in the safety and operational performance of heavy equipment operators by informing training content about how experienced operators manage unexpected situations around the site. Tapping into the tacit knowledge that experienced operators gather over time can provide site specific and timely information about situational cues used to manage the unexpected. This type of information complements basic skills training by helping the trainee understand the operational context in which the acquired skills will be applied. Inexperienced operators have traditionally gained experience through their own actions, observing the actions of others and by taking the advice of mentors who have æbeen there, done thatÆ and developed operational decision making skills for safe and productive work performance. Leadership and mentoring techniques that contribute to effective knowledge delivery will also be discussed.Other simulator training strategies include refresher training, change management, emergency response training and testing the usability of new equipment and technologies prior to their introduction on-site. A key challenge ahead for the resources sector is the development of knowledge elicitation techniques that suit the operational workforce. The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance in terms of produced ore grades and quantity and extraction process efficiency often deviate from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.With the development of modern information and communication technology over the last decade, a flood of data about different aspects of the production process is available in a real-time manner. For example, sensor technology enables online characterisation of geochemical, mineralogical and physical material characteristics on conveyor belts or at working faces. The ability to utilise this additional information and feed it back into reserve block models and planning assumptions opens up new opportunities to continuously control the decisions made in production planning to increase resource recovery and process efficiency. This leads to a change in paradigm from a discontinuous method to near real-time reserve reconciliation and model updating, which calls for suitable modelling and optimisation methodologies to quantify prior knowledge in the reserve model, process and integrate information from different sensor sources, back propagate the gain in information into reserve models and efficiently optimise operational decisions in real-time.This paper introduces the concept of an integrated closed-loop framework for real-time reserve management, incorporating sensor-based material characterisation, geostatistical modelling under uncertainty, modern data assimilation methods for sequential model updating and mining system simulation and optimisation. "Prior to the 1950s in the USA, surface coalmines were generally left without any reclamation. As government regulations advanced, mine operators were required to backfill the area and plant grasses or trees. After the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) was passed in 1977 in the USA, mine operators were required to conduct pre-mining analyses of the site and to designate a land use that could be achieved after the mining. Common post-mining land uses in the USA are: agricultural uses such as prime farmland reclamation with crops, hayland and pasture, and biofuel crops forestry wildlife habitat building site development.Provisions and regulations for each post-mining land use were developed and practices to achieve successful and sustainable land uses were established. The Imperial Smelting Furnace at Cockle Creek, NSW, was constructed in 1961 and is the oldest facility using the Imperial Smelting process in operation. In recent years there have been significant improvements in many areas of the operation, including production, safety, hygiene and environmental performance. Steps taken to achieve these improvements are described. Plans to secure a profitable future while meeting environmental requirements are outlined.

Process plants are characterised by variability of performance over a wide range of time-scales; reflected in fluctuations in metal recovery, concentrate grade, plant throughput and reagent costs. In turn, these fluctuations impact financial metrics such as operating costs and revenue. The primary cause of plant variability is variation in the physical, lithological and mineralogical characteristics of the ore fed to the plant. The variability of the ore is driven by the intrinsic heterogeneity of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody, the mining method and mine production plan, the capacity to stockpile and blend, as well as the plant flow sheet and the level of plant automation. Whilst the impact of ore variability on process plants is universally recognised, it is rarely quantified in financial terms. Consequently, opportunities to reduce its impact are often overlooked due to the lack of a basis for a quantifiable cost-benefit analysis to justify improvement initiatives. This paper will present case studies using production data from the Renison tin concentrator and a zinc concentrator. These case studies demonstrate that as the standard deviation of plant head grade increases (as a proxy for ore variability), plant metal recovery subsequently reduces. The metal recovery is then converted into plant revenue losses, to quantify the economic impact of ore variability. The Renison case study demonstrated that whilst a very rare occurrence, revenue losses were as high as 34 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. The zinc concentrator case study demonstrated that revenue losses were as high as 6 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. Options are available for reducing and managing ore variability in the process plant. These options include changing mining practices so that the ore is fed to the plant with less variability, more advanced process plant control systems and the use of predictive geometallurgical models.

Measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques can provide a useful tool to aid drill and blast engineers in open cut mining. By avoiding time consuming tasks such as scan-lines and rock sample collection for laboratory tests, MWD techniques can not only save time but also improve the reliability of the blast design by providing the drill and blast engineer with the information specially tailored for use. While most mines use a standard blast pattern and charge per blasthole, based on a single rock factor for the entire bench or blast region, information derived from the MWD parameters can improve the blast design by providing more accurate rock properties for each individual blasthole. From this, decisions can be made on the most appropriate type and amount of explosive charge to place in a per blasthole or to optimise the inter-hole timing detonation time of different decks and blastholes. Where real-time calculations are feasible, the system could extend the present blast design even be used to determine the placement of subsequent holes towards a more appropriate blasthole pattern design like asymmetrical blasting.

This paper describes the new iron and steelmaking process recently commissioned at NZ Steel. Ironsand mined and concentrated at Waikato North head is slurry pumped 18 km to the company's Glenbrook works. Ironmaking includes the direct reduction process pioneered at Glenbrook in the 1970s and a new continuous electric melter. The molten, high carbon pig iron produced is then fed to a vanadium recovery unit and on to the KOBM oxygen steelmaking vessel. Steel is cast into billets or slabs. The new plant, which is the first stage of a fully integrated works at Glenbrook, raises New Zealand Steel's production capacity from 150 000 t/y to 750 000 t/y.

Process mineralogy is an inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and mineral processing. As a predicting and trouble-shooting tool, process mineralogy helps address all mineralogical issues and problems related to mineral processing. It provides useful information on process design and optimisation, flow sheet development and cost reduction. As more and more complex and refractory ores are being discovered and processed, it is believed that process mineralogy will gain more attention and play a more important role in process design and optimisation. This paper will first discuss the scope of process mineralogy and mineralogical factors that may affect mineral processing of various ores, and then focuses on the application of process mineralogy in process design and optimisation through case studies.

Faced with the need to improve workplace conditions in both its development and production headings in its existing K1 orebody, as well as its new K Link and K2 orebodies, the Kencana mine in Indonesia took the novel approach of reversing the ventilation on most of its access ramp by outcasting up the ramp to the portal. Working levels were then fed with fresh air via auxiliary fans sealed into the current surface ‘egress’ intake raises (ladderways) or another small surface intake raisebore rather than from fans hung in the ramp as in the past. Outcasting the portal provided a substantial increase in the total mine exhaust capacity allowing fewer levels to be ventilated in series and significantly improving conditions, especially in the most difficult workplaces to ventilate. It also reduced the consequences if there was to be a fire on a vehicle in the ramp. The same system using the ramp as an exhaust is also intended to be used as part of the final ventilation solution for the new K2 orebody which also uses a novel single surface ventilation shaft that is vertically split into separate intake and exhaust compartments using a concrete brattice. Using the main ramp as an exhaust has potential application in many other operations in Australia using surface ramps which otherwise frequently suffer from overuse of series ventilation circuits and poor working conditions at the mine bottom.

"The use of conditional simulation to characterise mine plan uncertainty is increasing for the assessment of risk in mining projects. While the development of grade uncertainty profiles is relatively straightforward and can be validated using standard geostatistical techniques, the addition of geological uncertainty to evaluate total risk remains problematic. Some of the problems associated with geological uncertainty methods include the clustering of data in favourable geologic units, difficulty in training image definition and the inability to address change of support issues for categorical variables. Despite these obstacles, the importance of geological uncertainty as a contributor to total uncertainty has prompted Newmont to explore and evaluate the use of various techniques (and combinations of techniques) on different deposit types.Two orogenic deposits of different geological complexity were selected for the study: Subika, a shear zone-hosted deposit, and Merian, a deposit containing gold mineralisation associated with quartz vein zones and stockwork within which are found higher-grade quartz breccia zones. Newmont trialled various categorical simulation approaches to determine the applicability of these methods for each deposit type and the effect of parameter choice on the width of the uncertainty interval. Some of the techniques that were trialled include multiple point statistics methods, sequential indicator simulation using local probabilities as well as variations of these methodologies.The goals of this study included: gaining an understanding of which techniques may work best in which deposit types gaining an understanding of the intricacies of each method gaining an understanding of the effect that each method has on total uncertainty analysis.This paper presents a comparison of the various techniques and makes recommendations for their use in uncertainty analysis.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Perry, R, Allen, L and Inglis, R, 2014. Courses in chemical engineering and metallurgical engineering at the University of Queensland were compared and the main difference was found to be the greater emphasis on the application of chemical engineering fundamentals, particularly chemical thermodynamics, to specific processes in the metallurgy course. This reflects the distinctive features of extractive metallurgical processes which are not common in other chemical engineering processes and which justify the study of extractive metallurgy in its own right. B.Sc. courses in metallurgy provide one way in which the specialist knowledge of extractive metallurgy can be taught. General metallurgy courses are considered to be preferable to those restricted solely to extractive metallurgy since graduates of a general course have a wider choice of employment, while excessive emphasis on extractive metallurgical applications in chemical engineering courses could reduce the non-specific nature of these courses. Postgraduate diploma and higher degree programmes are avenues for non- metallurgists to acquire knowledge of the discipline.

The AGL Loy Yang Mine is one of the largest and most significant coalmines in Australia. Commencing in 1982, this mine produces 30–35 Mt/a to supply more than 50 per cent of Victoria’s electrical power requirements. At this mine there are unique geotechnical challenges to overcome to ensure its safe operation including: significant mine depth, low density of coal in the operating and permanent mine batters, the influence of groundwater and deep sediment aquifer pressures. One of the challenges is the behaviour of brown coal, which is neither a soil nor a rock and displays long-term creep stress relief. Other geotechnical challenges include ensuring stability in high unconsolidated dumps, potential large-scale block movement in mine batters driven by crack water pressure and heave from high-pressure aquifers.The paper will outline the geological and hydrogeological setting and potential failure mechanisms, and detail an integrated geographic information system and reporting regime that in part addresses ground control management at the mine. The paper will also outline the management processes for a dynamic geotechnical environment and the benefits of the alliance arrangements to meet the geotechnical requirements at the mine and the effective personnel integration in the mine technical services team.CITATION:Jansen, B, Missen, J and Cyphers, S, 2014.
