Some project managers accept unsatisfactory economic evaluation modelling because they are unaware of what constitutes good practice. They tend to leave it to the evaluation specialist or others to decide. The AusIMM has published on its website a draft set of guidelines for technical economic evaluation which will allow these project managers to take control and demand worldÆs best practices.The style of the guidelines is described and the source of a worked spreadsheet example in Excel is given.Economic evaluation in project management is described. A simple test for the acceptance or rejection of evaluation work is offered. The nature of modelling and evaluation in each of the three study phases of concept, prefeasibility and final feasibility are described. Suggestions on the selection of specialists for each phase are given. The three levels of evaluation thinking are described, namely, modelling, valuation and evaluation. Finally the meaning of æfinancial analysisÆ is explained.The conclusion is that æthe role of an economic evaluation specialist is to create models and evaluations for the whole project team to readily understand and use: it is not to create models for his/her own useÆ.CITATION:Card, P, 2012. "Inrush of water is always an issue, especially for mines located in heavy rainfall areas. Nowadays, mining companies and research institutes have developed many advanced technologies for study and analysis of hydrological processes. In this paper, an advanced method is introduced, which uses the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM) data in the Geographical Information System (GIS) platform to simulate the stream distributions around two specific mines: Super Pit and Griffin coalmine in Western Australia. The impact of this approach is important because it reduces the time and economic cost by creating a high spatial resolution hydrological map in the specific areas. The study identifies the flow path of the run-off water, which helps in adopting a suitable water management plan surrounding the case study mines. The results match with the ground reality. Based on the results, the stream structure around Griffin coalmine is more complicated than that of Super Pit. The bifurcation ratio and drainage density are computed to estimate the subsoil permeability characteristics of the two mines. Recommendations have been put forward to prevent and reduce the potential risks of water accumulation around the open pit mines.Citation:Ghosh, A K, 2016. The enrichment of magnetite to haematite and haematite-goethite leads to a coincident magnetic low and gravity high within the banded iron formation. Palaeochannel deposits of pisolitic limonite can be expected to provide a relative magnetic high and gravity low in a sinuous geometry. Detrital iron deposits of conglomerate, scree or ‘canga’ might have indistinct magnetic response but will usually have a relative gravity high.These signatures provide clear discriminators detectable by a joint gravity and magnetic survey.The combination of airborne gravity gradiometry and magnetometry is particularly powerful in detecting and discriminating targets, as well as mapping lithologies and structure, across a wide variety of iron ore deposit styles. It provides detection capabilities in a platform capable of rapid, complete coverage with minimal access issues. This approach has been used in FALCON™ airborne surveys for iron ore exploration in the Great Lakes, USA; the Middleback Ranges, South Australia; and the Hamersley Basin, Western Australia.The complex magnetic properties of iron formations (particularly remanence, anisotropy and depth of weathering) prevent this approach from being simple. The use of vector residual magnetic intensity (VRMI), calculated from the measured total magnetic intensity (TMI), assists by reducing the complexity due to the different directions of the remanent and induced magnetic fields.Estimations of the density to magnetisation ratio via the pseudo-lithology calculated from the VRMI and gravity gradients provide a useful method of capturing the discriminatory power of joint magnetic and gravity gradient data.

In Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, two water jacket lead furnaces have been in operation for the past three years. The furnaces were erected in war time, and only absolute essentials were procurable. The water for the jackets was obtained from wells adjacent to the works, in a dolomite formation. There being no water-softening plant, except a small one capable of treating water for the power plant only, this water was found to make a heavy scale in the jacket. During 1917 several jackets were burnt through, resulting in serious trouble and loss of output. In order to avoid this, furnaces were stopped twice a month for 8 hours and scale was removed as far as possible. In addition to the scale trouble during the summer months, a green slime grew in the supply tanks and occasionally became detached from the tank and collected in the cocks near the jackets. This caused risk to the jackets and was difficult to remove without a stoppage of the furnace. In 1918, bundles of wattle bark were placed in the hot well at the rate of one ton per month. These extracted the tannin and added from 0.5 to one part of tannin per 100,000 to the circulating water. The hot water was cooled over a brushwood cooling tower and returned to the supply tanks. The well water required to, make up the wastage was estimated at 40,000 gal per day.

The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. Rocks from the shear zone obtained from recent drillholes are unweathered and facilitate paragenetic studies. There is a progression of mineral deposition from semiductile foliation-parallel shearing, to subsequent folding, and brittle fracturing. Sheared rocks are dominated by microshears containing fine grained hydrothermal muscovite and rutile that has recrystallised from metamorphic muscovite and titanite respectively. Euhedral pyrite occurs within segregations in the schist and is locally brecciated by the shears.   Arsenopyrite occurs within microshears and is intergrown with hyrothermal muscovite. Fractures within relatively undeformed schist are filled with ankerite, siderite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and these veinlets also crosscut the microshears. Locally the schist is folded and zones of brecciation, silicification and vein deposition overprint the rock. Vein quartz and albite predominate and arsenopyrite and gold infill breccia matrix and crosscutting veinlets. Sulphide deposition began in the later stages of metamorphism with pyrite deposited in quartz-albite segregations. Subsequent shearing caused brecciation of some grains and accompanied deposition of arsenopyrite ¦ gold and rare sulphides along foliation-parallel microshears. Minor amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena were then remobilised in ankerite veins that crosscut the shears. In areas of high strain, arsenopyrite was then deposited as euhedral grains in veins and breccias. Synmineralisation deformation caused the brecciation of some grains and gold was deposited infilling fractures in the arsenopyrite. The paragenetic sequence shows gold mineralisation occurred in two distinct sets of structures (semiductile and brittle) that formed at different times in the formation of the shear zone.

The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. The west coast of New Zealand’s south island is host to a large number of placer goldfields that stretch from the Westport area in the north to Gillespies Beach in the south and inland to the foothills of the Southern Alps. This area is host to a large number of alluvial, glacial and strand line deposits ageing in range from Recent to Tertiary. In recent years exploration models have been developed for off shore placer deposits on the continental shelf.Gold mining on the west coast has exploited placer gold resources from the 1860s to present, and with the recent surge in the gold price the industry is currently undergoing a resurgence. The current increase in mining is dominated by small-scale mechanical operations usually involving one to two people at each site; a few larger operations also exist such as the Grey River Dredge.Mining methods range from using floating bucket dredges to small diggers. Some of the mining technologies used are similar to those employed during the great gold rushes of the 19th century. Exploration and grade control techniques can be very rudimentary often relying on previous sampling programs or wide spaced bulk sample drill holes. Some bulk sample drilling is used on the larger operations as a form of grade control, most of the small operations tend not to use any ore control sampling prior to mining. Extraction techniques relying on simple gravity based designs with riffle tables or spirals are the most commonly used. Environmental standards are very high within New Zealand and require operators to return mined areas to preagreed to landforms. The high rainfall experienced on the west coast causes challenges to operators in regard to water quality. Technical issues combined with often limited capital provide for challenges to the operations.

The requirement for secondary egress from underground workings has long been regulated in Australia. Escape way systems have evolved from simple airleg rising ladders and timber ladders to steel galvanised ladders and more recently fully enclosed polyethylene ladders.The polyethylene ladder, Safescape Laddertube, was introduced to the underground mining industry in 2010. It is an enclosed cylindrical modular plastic ladder designed for use in underground escape ways and access ways. Since its first installation in May 2010, the Laddertube has been installed in 43 mines across four countries, totalling 8800 m of ladders installed to December 2013.The Cracow Gold mine is one operation using Laddertube, located 500 km north-west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Upon discovering and developing both the Empire and Roses Pride orebodies, a safe and economically viable secondary egress system and surface primary ventilation exhaust shafts were necessary to support development and production activities to these workings. The need arose to merge these two critical requirements together between surface and underground mine workings some 200 m and 400 m respectively for each orebody. Neither egress has intermediate access points within their full service length from top to bottom. Several options were considered, the preferable and most feasible method adopted was Laddertube.The longest egress length requiring Laddertube within the two vertical surface exhaust shafts was 400 m long, within a 3.5 m diameter shaft. Due to the length of the vertical Laddertube system in both egresses, personnel are to be assisted by mechanical means using the Extended Ladder Climb Assist system.The Gossan Hill mine also uses Laddertube for their escape ways. Part of the Golden Grove operation, Gossan Hill is an underground sublevel open stoping mine located in the mid-west of Western Australia.With a considerable mine life remaining and a history of acidic water and stress related deterioration in vertical openings, the mine operators sought an escape way solution that would provide for the long-term needs of Gossan Hill. Laddertube was selected due to its non-corrosive properties and the ability to fill in around the ladder way to provide stability to the raise opening.Laddertube is a recent development in escape way systems, and is effectively being applied in a variety of operations, meeting the specific needs of underground mines.CITATION:Durkin, S, Hawkins, B and Lawrence, V, 2014. Technological advances in sensor and material handling technology has enabled a step change in mine operations performance. Sensors capable of monitoring the grade of broken rock mass can be mounted on shovels, truck loading units or conveyors allowing highly precise ore/waste decisions to be made on small parcels of rock, increasing selectivity. This increased selectivity has the potential to remove sub-economic material from the product stream prior to incurring ore treatment costs. Bulk ore sorting is capable of intervening at <10t “pods” on Run Of Mine conveyors, or alternatively at per bucket loading (5-100t) or truck scale (30-350t) parcels of ore. This Grade Engineering technique being developed by CRCORE (Rutter, 2017) can improve mill feed grade, remove deleterious materials and ensure that the high capital intensity ore treatment facility is presented with the best ore feed strategy. While this technology can improve mine economics, estimating the performance of a bulk ore sorting system is challenging. Traditional resource estimation practices such as Ordinary Kriging and Inverse distance weighting (IDW) are based on weighted averages, a process that smooths the grade profile, reducing modelled variance and dispersion. Its purpose is to generate a globally unbiased result but is less suited to generating a model of adequate granularity to enable confidence in local grade heterogeneity. This is an essential component for bulk ore sorting success. Estimating ore sorting performance requires knowledge of the grade-tonnage curve at the scale of the sensor diversion unit (SDU). Evaluation based on an estimator that smooths the SDU distribution will not correctly predict ore/waste separation or economic performance. Alternatives to traditional linear geostatistics have been tested on a variety of mineralisation styles. Additionally, a number of heterogeneity metrics have been developed to assist with evaluation and assessment. The difference between estimation for grade (metal) and modelling for traditional mining block models, versus methods used for predicting heterogeneity and variability are explored.

"There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. The development of new projects (and thereby supply) can also have an impact on commodity prices, and therefore an impact on returns for financial backers.This paper will provide commentary on the author’s experiences and observations as a project developer and operator for 25 years, before becoming a project financier a decade ago.CITATION:Rozman, L I, 2016. In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

At its most basic level, minerals project management may be broken down into a series of logical chronological phases, described in this paper as: exploration, discovery; scoping and pre-feasibility; feasibility and approval; project financing and commissioning; operation; expansion and closure. Each phase has its own peculiarities and challenges, any one of which can potentially upset the forward progress of a minerals project.Reference is made to each of these project phases based on the authorÆs many years of first-hand experience, in an attempt to identify issues within the project management spectrum where additional caution may be warranted. Left un-addressed, these issues can cause undue delays in the project timeline, ultimately delaying approval at significant project cost.Finally, reference is made to the Mine ManagerÆs Handbook recently published by the AusIMM which is an excellent project management resource, considered to be very relevant for minerals treatment plant managers, whether the context be constructing, operating, expanding or shutting down.CITATION:Dunlop, J S, 2013. There is currently a worldwide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow characteristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for determining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0.0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦C - 319¦C. Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physicochemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage. Apparent viscosity increased sharply with increase in solids concentration and suspensions at higher concentration behaved as non Newtonian liquids. Viscosity decreased with increase in temperature; rate of decrease slowed down with increase in temperature.

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin &amp; Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. THE following notes, compiled in the first instance for the makers of rock-drIlls, were read by Mr. Hanton at a meeting of the Broken Hill Branch on 12th Septelnber, 1922. It was decided that all Broken Hill mines be asked to give their individual views on the subject, so that a comprehensive Broken Hill view could be published. Replies have been received from four (4), mines to date, and their&apos;ideas fairly well coincide with those set out by Mr. Hapton. His notes were as follow:- &quot;The Zinc Corporation Limited.NOTES ON ROCK-DRILL DEVELOPMENTSAs far as our present experience goes, the rock-drill developments on this mine will probably be something resembling the following. The programme is subject to modification or alteratian, according to circumstances. The results of further trials and improvements in present drills, and the design of new types, will, of course, affect any general scheme such as that outlined. It appears reasonably certain that the 3i-in. reciprocating drills which have done practically all the stoping up to date, will be gradually replaced by hammer drills of the internal water-feed type, and that the existing types of hammer drill on the mine will be converted into internal water-feed machines instead of being used as dry machine with outside jet.The ultimate types of machines will be four... Type 1 would be a machine equivalent to the Ingersoll Leyner: 248, Waugh Turbro, SullivaIi DX61, or Holman CH2. This would be used for driving, cross-cutting, and similar excavating work, and possiblyfor stoping also, and should be capable of efficiently working any class of ground. Features, apart from the general requirements set out later, would be the weight of the machine and mounting height of the machine above the seating (as this affects the convenience of boring back or bottom holes); absence of projections on the mounting which the air hose will foul as the machine is fed...

Consents Required for Overseas Persons Overseas Investment Regulations 1974 Foreign investment proposals must be reviewed by the Overseas Investment Commission to ensure that these are in accord with national interests. Consent must be obtained from the Commission for: 1. New investment proposals which include: a. An overseas person acquiring 25 per cent or more of any class of share in a company. b. A New Zealand company issuing shares to an overseas person where this will result in that person owning 25 per cent or more of the company. c. An overseas person acquiring business assets for consideration in excess of $100 000. d. An overseas person commencing business in New Zealand. 2. Borrowing in New Zealand: An overseas person must obtain consent to raise funds in excess of $300 000 in New Zealand. 3. Borrowing Overseas: New Zealand incorporated companies must obtain consent to borrow overseas. Current policy is borrowing will be approved where the loan is for a specified fixed term of one year or more.

Mine seismicity is one of the most difficult geotechnical risks to manage in seismically active mines. There are currently some established empirical and statistical methods that provide quantitative measures for seismic hazard assessment in operating mines. However, these methods are mostly suitable for quantifying the current or historical seismic hazard and often cannot be directly used to forecast the future hazards. Numerical modelling is the only analytical tool that can capture the level of complexities required for a meaningful analysis of mine seismicity and therefore to facilitate a reliable forecast of future hazards. However, there is currently no widely accepted and established guideline and methodology for analysing and forecasting mine seismicity using numerical modelling. This paper first provides a background on previous published studies on this subject and then outlines the key aspects that can affect the reliability of the forecasting for mine seismicity. These aspects include a) processing of historical seismic data, b) selection of suitable numerical modelling approach, c) Post-processing and interpretation of the model outputs. A case study is then presented for the Gwalia Deeps Mine where a new framework was developed to forecast future mine seismicity. High-quality seismic data for a period of five years was used for back-analysis and comparisons with the numerical modelling outputs. After development of the method, the future seismicity was forecast for the next 12 months and the actual seismicity was monitored against the forecast during this period. Results of this study shows promising potential for the proposed framework to be applied more routinely and at other mine sites. However, more validations are required at Gwalia Deeps mine as the mine proceeds to deeper levels. In addition, the method needs more improvements and should be tested and validated at other mining operations before it can be established as a proven method. Quang Ninh province is the most significant coal producing region in the north of Vietnam. The Nui Beo Coal Company (NBCC) operates open pit mines in Quang Ninh province and the waste overburden produced is dumped as sidehill fill in the Chinh Bac waste dump site. In the past, no special consideration has been given to the environmental impacts during the dumping operations. The mine waste is transported in trucks from the mine site to the dumping site and the loading, hauling and dumping operations are the main sources of dust emission. Rain events, especially during the rainy season, cause the generation of contaminated surface water as well as seepage of water through the dump at a number of locations. The existence of cracks at the top of the dump can pose serious stability problems with heavy rain events leading to failure of slopes which can potentially disturb vast areas of land currently used for agricultural purposes and human settlement. For sustainable development at the Chinh Bac waste dump site in the future, apart from the social and economic considerations to be assessed, there is an absolute necessity for environmental protection measures to be in place both during and after the dumping of the mine waste overburden. Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam (RAME) is working to develop and implement concepts for the mitigation of environmental problems emerging from dust, contaminated water and lacking slope stability to ensure successful rehabilitation of the coal mine waste dumps in the north of Vietnam. Within the framework of RAME, the Institute of Mining Engineering I (RWTH Aachen University) is managing and working to develop the stabilisation concepts for the solid mine waste dump in collaboration with the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering (RWTH Aachen University), Brenk Systemplanung and the Vietnamese group of companies VINACOMIN (Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group). The most economical and environmentally sound operations, as well as locally adaptable environmental protection measures, are essential for the sustainable development of the dumping operations at Chinh Bac dump. This paper describes the dump site and the sustainable development possibilities with an emphasis on the environmental protection and stability problems at the Chinh Bac waste dump.

Technological advances the sensor design and performance for logging while drilling (LWD) instrumentation offer considerable opportunities in iron ore exploration. Here we focus on the development of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) LWD tool. NMR is an advanced geotechnical logging technology capable of providing in situ measurements of the porosity, pore size and permeability of the formation of interest. The ability to provide real-time characterisation of iron-ore systems is beneficial to both drilling operations as well as real-time formation evaluation. The development of an NMR LWD tool for mineral exploration drilling has previously not been achieved due to the significant technical and environmental challenges associated with the design and operation of such a tool. The tool outlined in this work is designed to work in reverse-circulation (RC) drilling systems. As such, the tool needs to be compatible with the RC drill-string, as well as being highly robust to survive the shocks and vibrations experienced during RC drilling operations. The magnetic physics of the probe must be capable of measuring at the appropriate depth into formation whilst being subject to the array of motions experienced during drilling operations. Furthermore, conducting accurate NMR measurements in an iron ore formation is challenging and the measurement methodology must be tailored to characterise the magnetic environment. The tool also requires high-powered electronics capable of operating the necessary pulse sequences for excitation and acquisition. The resultant tool design must therefore optimise the inherent trade-offs which exist between the physical components (ie mechanical structure, magnetic components and electronic hardware) in order to operate appropriately whilst not hindering RC drilling operations. Current experimental analysis of the prototype indicates that the current probe design exhibits the required measurement specifications and is nearing field testing. Future work will look towards commercialisation of the instrument.
