Pipe umbrella support systems – also called canopy tube systems – have been used successfully for tunnelling in challenging ground conditions since the 1970s. Historically, the drilling unit was the limiting factor for pipe umbrella installations – less attention has been paid to pipe couplings and their influence on labour time and load-bearing capacity.This contribution investigates the influence of the type of pipe connection on the load bearing characteristics of a connected pipe and discusses associated influences on design calculations and installation performance. Standard thread connections reduce the effective cross-section and thereby load-bearing capacity in the connection area. To achieve design parameters, over-dimensioning of the un-weakened pipe section is the only way to overcome this limitation. Recently, two new, alternative connection types were designed and developed for connected pipe umbrella pipes. The first one is the nipple coupling, consisting of fitting with a threaded connection that is pressed and welded into the ends of standard tubes. The second type is the squeezed connection, which mechanically connects non-threaded pipe ends, achieved by force-fitted squeezing from the drill rig. Both coupling types have technical as well as operational advantages compared to the common thread couplings, which are the weakest point in the support system.In the following sections significant technical differences are explained, design values given and a site example presented to illustrate the operational advantages of the newly developed coupling?type.CITATION:Volkmann, G M, 2014. At Newmont’s Jundee Operation, exploration and resource geologists collaborated to produce an open pit resource model. Using a variety of modelling and estimation techniques but no new data, an uneconomic underground target was converted into a potentially economic open pit evaluation. During an industry downturn, it is more important than ever to efficiently share expertise, ideas and resources to problem solve and produce meaningful project outcomes. The two departments brought together different methods and ideas, and the process showed that certain methods worked better than others in different situations, thus the appropriate method was applied to each part of the evaluation. The results were used to create new procedures and improved lithology modelling and resource model estimations. Adaptability of the geology departments and collaboration such as this are key to ongoing improvements and future mine life at Jundee.CITATION:Dudgeon, K, Paradis, J and Topping, M, 2014. The world-class Golden Mile gold deposit in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia is part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) operation, which is wholly owned by Northern Star Resources Limited. Current mining operations across the Golden Mile is dominated by the large Fimiston Open Pit, which is over 4 km long, 1 km wide and 600 m deep. It is part of a larger mineralised system that stretches over 8 km and includes the Mt Charlotte Underground Mine, which is also operated by KCGM, as well as numerous historical open pit and underground mines. This mineralised system has been continuously mined for over 125 years and is set to continue well into the future. The Golden Mile deposit is in the Norseman Wiluna Greenstone Belt which is made up of a series of mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that have been structurally deformed and intruded by granitic rocks. There are two main styles of mineralisation across the Golden Mile. Firstly, the Fimiston style, which consists of shear hosted Golden Mile lodes with abundant sulfides and tellurides and secondly, the Charlotte style that comprises younger stockwork veins. Fimiston style mineralisation is the primary style of mineralisation within the Fimiston Open Pit. Historically, in excess of 3500 m of underground development and over 755 stopes were mined prior to the consolidation of the area and the commencement of Fimiston Open Pit operation. Old underground workings, known as voids, are either empty or backfilled and extend to more than 1.2 km below surface. Although they are a routine part of mining operations at KCGM, voids pose a significant challenge for the geology team in terms of planning and executing exploration and grade control drilling, geological modelling, grade and tonnage estimation, drill and blast design and execution, marking up ore block designs, mining, and reconciliation. This paper will discuss the various challenges faced by the geology team due to the presence of voids, solutions used to overcome some of these challenges and the results of these activities.

The Courier 300 system basing on conven- tional X-ray technology is applied to complex or large processes. The newer Minexan 202 dis- tributed probe system based on radioisotope technology is developed mainly for simple or small scale applications. In this paper aspects and experiences of these analyzer systems and their applications for flotation control are discussed with particular reference to the role of the computer

The NZ Minerals Industry Association has continued to advance the interests of the minerals sector through leading the establishment of a Minerals Industry Advisory Committee, and the preparation of a technology strategy with funding assistance from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology. The current moves mirror those of more than 30 years ago when a government initiative led to a resurgence of exploration through amending the mining legislation, redirecting Government research priorities and tax changes. The economic and political and commercial environment in 2001 is very different from that of the 1960s and success of these new initiatives depends on the continuing support and involvement of all sectors of the minerals industry, and building an improved relationship with the Government and the public.

Grinding circuits are known to be the highest consumer of energy used in the ore comminution process, with high operational costs and sensitivity to ore conditions. The mining industry is being encouraged to look for more energy efficient processes while increasing the mass and metallurgical recovery; a specific example is projects with lower iron ore grades, which demands a higher level of liberation and resulting higher energy consumption. This has led to increased usage of high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology as an alternative design within the comminution circuit. A growing use of the HRC™ HPGR technology has been used to generate concentrate through a more sustainable process. In the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, the readaptation of iron ore beneficiation circuits has been initiated, replacing the traditional crushing-to-grinding flow sheet with circuits using crushing-to-HPGR flow sheets, with the main driver being reduced energy consumption. Utilising results from sampling campaigns and analysis of experimental data collected in an industrial plant, the work herein presents a case study from the JMN Mineração operating plant, where the HRC™ HPGR was used as an alternative to traditional grinding using horizontal mills. The results show that the HRC™ HPGR performance in this iron ore processing plant showed benefits in terms of reduced energy consumption as compared to the projected performance with a traditional grinding circuit.

The volumetric method of estimating hydrocarbon resources and recoverable reserves is and probably will remain a dominant method in petroleum engineering. The method is technically very simple, but has one main problem: how to express, measure and properly handle the variable and complex uncertainty of each estimate. The computer age brought in the Monte Carlo Simulation method which enables correct arithmetic operation using data with specified probability distribution. However, several problems are still not solved uniquely and still exist. For instance, the determination and description of the distribution of single parameters, the determination of the degree of dependency between parameters (e.g. hydrocarbon saturation-porosity), and standard probabilist- ic definition of generally used categories (e.g. proved, probable, possible). Methods for handling these problems are discussed.

The approach to the disposal and storage of mine tailings is slowly evolving. Tailings disposal has been based on minimising short-term capital and operating costs, with rehabilitation costs discounted by the application of a high discount factor in a net present value approach to accounting. This has led to the widespread adoption of surface tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to store slurried tailings delivered by robust and cheap centrifugal pumps and pipelines. Depending on the site climate, rate of rise of the tailings, nature of the tailings and the extent to which supernatant water is removed from the surface TSF, the tailings may or may not dewater, densify and gain strength. High rates of rise of dilute tailings to a facility used to store both tailings and supernatant water results in a wet, low-density, soft tailings deposit that not only occupies a large storage volume but also presents rehabilitation difficulties. A low tailings density results in high containment wall costs, very high rehabilitation costs and a low potential for future land use or ecological function. Overall, the cost of slurried tailings disposal, thought to be low, is actually high. However, low rates of rise, even of dilute tailings, in a dry climate with efficient supernatant water removal can produce a dewatered, high-density, stiff tailings deposit that may occupy a large footprint but to shallow depth that is relatively easy to rehabilitate. There are advantages in dewatering tailings in the processing plant to recover process water and chemicals, facilitate tailings disposal in a more solid form and facilitate rehabilitation. However, the cost of dewatering in-plant can be high, and the process water may not lend itself to reuse. There are also advantages in removing supernatant water to facilitate solar and wind drying of exposed tailings, although water is lost to evaporation and the dried tailings may best be harvested prior to inundation by fresh tailings or rainfall run-off. For an optimal design and control of metallurgical processes, a deep understanding of the thermodynamics of the governing reactions is required. Modelling the thermochemical behaviour of those reactions is complex, as it involves multi-component and multi-phase systems. For this purpose, thermodynamic computing systems such as FactSage™ (Bale et al, 2016), which combine Gibbs energy minimisation routines with large databases of optimised thermodynamic data of solutions and compounds, have been used within the SMS group GmbH. Recently, the successful integration of those thermodynamic computing systems into the digital platforms of SMS has been achieved through ChemApp, which made running complex thermochemical calculations in Python-integrated development environments possible. ChemApp is a programmer’s package for thermochemistry and incorporates the Gibbs energy minimiser of FactSage™ as reported by Petersen and Hack (2007) as well as by Zietsman and Petersen (2018). The digital platforms link the fundamental and the industrial aspects together and can be applied as a process advisor, or for the evaluation of the environmental footprint and the economic implications of different process routes, as discussed by Reuter (2023). Two examples illustrating the progress of the developments in this regard will be introduced: 1. The Tilting Refining Furnace (TRF) for copper scrap recycling and refining to anode copper (the BlueControlApp). 2. Dephosphorisation control for the oxygen steelmaking process (Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF)).

Late in 2005 it became apparent that cave propagation at the Northparkes Mine was not progressing as planned. By mid-2006 sufficient Reserves were identified to warrant an extensive drill and blast program to assist in cave propagation. This program began late in 2006 and concluded early 2007. A significant challenge faced was the drilling and blasting of holes between 75 - 240 m in length in the South Wedge in Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody. The project set new benchmarks in production drilling and charging in underground metalliferous mining. This paper discusses the drill and blast designs, the challenges and the operational issues encountered with this project. Also highlighted are ways in which these were overcome.

Implementation of a well planned and executed Management Operating System (MOS) can result in widespread improvements to operational performance but its success relies heavily on the investment by and engagement of the larger workforce with the project. Over the seven month period of the Telfer MOS project, significant improvements were achieved; a 20% increase in monthly hoisted tonnes from the open stope and sublevel cave operations and a 45% increase in square metres of ore extracted from the narrow vein operation. The Telfer MOS was undertaken with the intention that the project wasn’t solely about producing new tools, it hinged on the investment and behaviours of the personnel affected by these tools and alterations. To ensure that the project ran smoothly, the Byrnecut senior leadership team and their operators were heavily involved in the project’s development. In the initial stage, Telfer’s MOS project determined that the quality and accuracy of the information received in the form of radio calls to mine control and completed operator plods was questionable. This required an overhaul of the data collection and verification process in the form of altered operator plods, which was then cross referenced with the operator’s radio calls to mine control. Once the data collection and verification process was implemented, the Telfer team was then able to produce several tools with the aim of providing visibility to the data being captured and its implications. These tools allowed the mine foremen to determine whether equipment was being under-utilised and where they should focus their production efforts to meet monthly targets. Whilst the initial underground project is now complete, the implementation of MOS across the entire site is ongoing with significant operating improvements occurring.

The Golden Bar pit is part of the Macraes mine, the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Macraes mine is mainly developed in the late metamorphic Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. However, the Golden Bar pit was developed in a mineralised zone about 200 m structurally above the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. The host rocks are dominated by massive quartzofeldspathic schist (5 - 10 m layers) with minor intercalations (1 - 5 m scale) of micaceous schist. All the host schist has disseminated pyrite (micron to mm scale) from pervasive late metamorphic hydrothermal alteration.   In addition, there has been more localised (metre scale) relatively intense hydrothermal alteration controlled by shears subparallel to foliation. Gold occurs in three types of mineralised rock: silicified schist, which dominates, fissile black sheared rock, and cross-cutting quartz veins. There are three principal structural zones in the deposit: 1.   a strongly sheared micaceous and graphitic zone at the base of the structural sequence; 2.   a weakly deformed schist zone cut by relatively flat-lying (= 20¦ dipping) quartz veins; and 3.   a stack of imbricated schist pods and deformed silicified schist confined between two sub-parallel low-angle (ca. 30¦) shears.   These structural zones were juxtaposed during thrust deformation. The lower black shear zone has m-scale folding and over-thrusting packages, kink folding and foliation stacking with associated striations that imply west-directed thrusting. Striations and imbrication geometry between the upper two shears imply oblique thrusting that was directed towards the west. Post-mineralisation normal faults locally disrupt the mineralised zone. The Golden Bar pit mineralised zone has some of the structural and mineralogical characteristics of the main Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, and may be genetically related.

To obtain the rock type-I crack propagation process accurately, a novel fixture is used to make the prefabricated crack of rock propagation along the predetermined direction. In this study, the crack propagation process of rock is monitored with the digital image correlation method (DICM), and a mechanical model of crack directional propagation was established. The results show that the simple crack directional propagation device can effectively realise the stable propagation of type-I crack along the predetermined direction, the crack initiation angle is less than 10°, and the deviation between the peak strength of crack propagation calculated by a simplified mechanical model and the tensile strength of Brazilian splitting is 22.76 per cent and 7.53 per cent, respectively. According to the deformation field evolution law, crack propagation can be divided into three stages: microcrack development, main crack propagation, and main crack propagation. As for the rock type-I crack initiation and propagation mechanism, before reaching the peak strength, the prefabricated crack tip is subjected to maximum tensile stress; the elastic energy increases rapidly, and the dissipation energy increases slowly; after the peak strength, elastic energy exceeds its energy storage limit and released rapidly, and most of the input energy is converted into dissipation energy, which makes the crack propagation rapidly. The crack directional propagation device will be further optimised and improved, and it is expected to provide a new method for the study of crack propagation mechanism, rock failure precursor information and crack arrest principle, etc. It will also provide theoretical references for the optimisation of coal strata directional blasting, fracturing, fracture arrest, and other related technologies in geotechnical engineering.

A new high intensity flotation process FASTFLOT was deployed to recover residual zinc from the zinc circuit tailings at Pasminco Mining's Concentrator, Broken Hill. Performance of the FASTFLOT process is discussed with respect to various size fractions. Results suggest that the process has an affinity not only for fine particles but also for +200 ¦m particles which the conventional flotation cells failed to recover. Various strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also discussed.

"The precise formulation of a geometallurgical optimisation problem is by necessity a simplification of reality. It includes implicit choices such as data availability or mining block geometry. Additional data can be orebody data, production data or market data. Often these choices are predetermined by the software, the workflow or the corporate culture, and as such are not even queried. There are several aspects that might play a role in the optimisation. They include not only the spatial model on which the selection of mining blocks and the potential mining sequence are based, but also the complexity of the processing model, the way in which uncertainty is treated, the scope of responsibility and the complexity of the model. In addition the timing of the optimisation and the availability (or lack thereof) of information will influence the outcome of any optimisation.We show that different modelling choices and different model formulations for the same mine can lead to very different processing choices, substantially different net present values (NPV), opposite investment decisions and so to overall different values for the entire operation. The selection of adequate simplifications and corresponding formulations for the optimisation problem is thus an important task in itself.For this purpose we introduce a method for quantifying the impact of certain simplifications prior to the optimisation. For example, the effect of mining block choices depends mainly on the spatial structure and the structure of the processing gain function. Both can be quantified beforehand. The Coal Resources Survey commenced in 1974 as a search for Huntly Power Station coal, but soon developed into the most detailed regional coal search programme to be instituted in New Zealand. The program was initially conceived as geological in nature, but later included geotechnical, geohydrological, mining assessment, coal use, and environmental considerations in its investigations. The programme never undertook development work but has provided Government and the private sector with a sound basis for identifying development options. The discovery of large-scale coal resources in the Mokau, Waikato, and Taranaki regions and the lignite resources of Otago and Southland are a measure of the Survey's success. The directive by Government to phase out the NZCRS to a large extent coincides with the completion stage of the program. With most of the detailed regional study finished, it now remains to collate the data and publish summary reports at Coalfield and Coal Region level, in order to maximise the use and value of the data collected over the years.

Sampling equipment manufacturers endeavour to ensure that the mechanical equipment installed in sampling systems are designed and manufactured to adhere to the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or other standards relevant to the application. The mechanical parameters necessary to achieve these standards can be well controlled and requirements such as constant speed can be met through good mechanical design and engineering. However, when the equipment is installed and put into operation, the ISO compliance of the system is out of the hands of the equipment manufacturer and handed to the operator, who may be a generalist control system integrator.Making a sampling system perform according to standards, and being able to monitor and report on compliance require that the sampling system knowledge and the control integration is combined and applied in an integrated approach. Using a dedicated library of control routines developed for sampling can change a system from having compliant equipment to being a compliant system. The GPM Gold Operation has been employing an Albion Process™ plant at its Sotk (Zod) gold mine in Armenia since 2014. Long term data from the operation is now being published for the first time. The data presented includes concentrate throughput, as feed to the Albion Process™ plant (tonnes per day), sulphur grade in concentrate (% S), total sulphide sulphur oxidation in the Albion Process™ plant (% SOx) and gold recovery from Albion Process™ plant residues (%). The data provides a basis for evaluation of the effectiveness of the commissioning, ramp up and operation of the Albion Process™ plant. Notwithstanding the impact of a slower concentrator commissioning than expected, the plant demonstrates Series 1 behaviour on McNulty ramp up curves, indicating successful commissioning and fast ramp up. Interrogation of the data and operational experience indicates that this successful operation is a result of a process that is flexible, robust and stable, one that was designed well based on solid testwork results and pilot plant trials during the study phase undertaken by Glencore Technology and Core Resources, and where the local operators were provided with appropriate training in operation of the plant. Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a "D" welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The capacity of the kibble is 4 cubic feet.THE HEADFRAMEThe dimensions of the headframe are:Height to top of sheave .. .. 14 ft. 10 in.Distance centre to centre of legs 4 ft. 4 in.Length of bedpieces .. .. .. .. 8 ft. 9 in.The weight is approximately 2,000 lb., the tipping door and bedpieces being the heaviest members. They weigh 240 lb. and 170 lb. respectively.One compartment of the winze is decked over, and the bedpieces, which are 8 ft. 9 in. lengths of 6 in. pipe with three short lengths of plate welded to the underside, are placed over the sinking compartment, either transversely or parallel to the winze. Three 3 inch pipes act as spreaders between them.Welded to the top of each bedpiece is a 6-in. by iHn. plate 3 ft. 0 in. long with four 4-in. by 1.5-in. slots cut longitudinally at 10 in. centres. The Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana started processing ore from the Nkran pit in January 2016 at a production nameplate of 3 Mt/a. The flowsheet is a conventional SAG, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) with gravity-gold and carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery. The nameplate production was comfortably achieved within 3 months, so much so, that it was clear the SABC circuit was capable of processing more than the downstream section of the plant. Consequently, a program of de-bottlenecking was initiated to rectify volumetric capacity constraints. This program was later referred to as ‘Project 5 Million’ (t/a) or P5M. Having completed the de-bottlenecking exercise, it became evident that the SABC circuit could not reach 5 Mt/a solely on hard rock from Nkran. The new challenge was therefore to increase the capacity of the milling circuit through a focused comminution initiative that would address the following: geometallurgical treatment plan; upfront fragmentation requirements; installation of feed and mill monitoring equipment; and integration of a knowledge-based control strategy. This paper takes the reader through the various measures implemented to increase the milling rates and to create a stable/ sustainable control philosophy.
