Almost a quarter of a century since Bridges (1993) documented techniques for the assessment of ground conditions in a seminal paper in the Proceedings Second International Mining Geology Conference, the necessary role of the geologist in recording geotechnical data on exploration properties and in mines remains. Typically, the geologist is the first professional on the exploration property. Of course, most exploration properties don’t become mines. However, when a property does start to come together and form a coherent mineral deposit and professionals from across the minerals industry spectrum, including specialist geotechnical engineers, become increasingly involved, it remains the geologist who has the most intimate knowledge of the deposit. By association, that knowledge extends to the character of the rock mass.Throughout the various phases of prefeasibility, feasibility, construction and production, culminating in the mature mine, the knowledge of the rock mass held by the geologists continues to grow. In the current era of minimising cost and optimising profit, meeting the requirements and expectations of stakeholders ranging from fellow employees to investors, industry and financial regulators and the broader public, in a social environment where occupational health and safety concerns are of uppermost concern in every endeavour, the value of the geologists’ observations cannot be understated. Mines nowadays employ more geotechnical engineers than they did in the early 1990s when Bridges (1993) wrote his paper. More funds are available for specific geotechnical investigations of exploration properties and mines; none-the-less, those programs remain limited in their extent and there is a wealth of additional data available for collection with the appropriate training, at little additional effort. Fundamentally it is all about the numbers. Any hole not geotechnically logged is a hole that will need to be drilled again if the data is required. Any face, surface or underground, not geotechnically mapped is one that may need to be mapped a second time. That doesn’t mean every hole or every face. However, it is the proposition of this paper that the opportunity for additional geotechnical data to be gathered during traditional geological investigations is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. Occupational health and safety requirements demand that the geotechnical risks associated with mining are appropriately managed. Mining regulations in most Australian and overseas jurisdictions requires the consideration of geotechnical risk through formalised management plans. The Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code requires the consideration of modifying factors more than ever before. The benefit to be realised through improved geotechnical understanding by geologists on the ground leads to improved occupational health and safety, optimised reporting compliance, and improved financial and social outcomes for the exploration property and ultimately for the mine that follows.CITATION:Hills, P B, 2017. IN the early age of steel it was made hy what is known as the cementation proeess, in which wrought iron was embedded in charcoal and heated in a mufflc furnace to a tcmperature of approximately 1100° C. for varying lengths of time, the length of time depending upon the amount of carbon (or better known in thosedays as the degree of hardness) required in the finished product.By this process the resultant product obtained was not of uniform quality, and because of this uncertainty of quality Huntsman was induced, in the year 1740, to introduee what is known as the crucible process.This process consisted of cutting into small pieces the product of the cementation process, placing these pieces in a crucible, and melting them down with the aid of a eoke-fired furnace, after which the molten metal was cast into suitahly shaped ingots, from which could be hammered any desired shape.A section of crucible furnace is shown in Fig. 1. By this means a product, very uniform in character, was produced.The process is still in use, but, owing to its high operating cost, it is mostly eonfined to the production of very high-grade carhon and alloy steels. Its position to-day as a producer of these high-grade steels is, however, being very seriously challenged by the electric process.It was owing to the excessive cost of crucible steels and the need of producing a steel in commercial quantities and at a reasonable cost, that led Sir Henry Bessemer to introduce what is known as the Bessemer process.

Rarely do opportunities arise allowing closure of a mine site to be planned as a key beneficial land use asset within a new urban growth area; particularly so well prior to cessation of mining.Pit lakes are common mine closure legacies for many open cut mines and may form in open cut mine voids extending below the water table upon closure. Mine closure guidelines increasingly require post-mining land uses of equivalent capacity to premining conditions and that minimise long-term post-mining liabilities and maximise benefits to stakeholders and the environment. However, risks presented by pit lakes are regularly neglected in closure planning or are not able to be addressed to allow beneficial end use of the lake or surrounding land.This paper describes strategic planning initiated by quarry owners ten years before mining ceases. In liaison with the planning agencies, the planned closure of a large 100-year-old limestone quarry pit will form a lake on mine completion, with a well-considered beneficial end use in an urban setting in mind. The quarry pit and adjoining land at Batesford South about the edge of the City of Greater Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Geelong is experiencing growth pressures that necessitate development of a new growth area from about 2025.A multidisciplinary expert team assessed the constraints, opportunities and feasibility of rehabilitating the quarry and pit lake and developing the surrounding land as Geelong’s next urban growth area.The concept is exciting and demonstrates that a former mine site could become a valued home to about 40 000–45 000 people. About 30 per cent of the land will also be developed as an ecological riverine corridor including the pit lake that will become a regionally iconic lake as the centrepiece of an urban development.Our paper outlines technical challenges and how these can be met to achieve closure and beneficial use that meets the social, economic and environmental expectations of contemporary urban planning.CITATION:Gerner, M and McCullough, C?D, 2014. BHP is the world's largest copper concentrate producer with production from mines at Escondida (Chile), Ok Tedi (Papua New Guinea), and Island Copper (Canada). The entire concentrate production is further processed into refined copper by third-party smelters around the world. In anticipation of an expansion in the global copper concentrate production capacity and a corresponding increase in treatment and refining charges by copper smelters, BHP has continuously evaluated various opportunities for downstream copper processing. An expansion in the Escondida mine production, combined with BHP's interest in processing some of its concentrate production on-shore in Chile, ultimately resulted in the development of the Escondida Leach Process. This process was specifically developed for higher grade concentrates, such as from Escondida. An ammoniacal lixiviant and air are used under ambient conditions to leach less than one-half of the contained copper values. After solid-liquid separation, the solution is subjected to solvent extraction regenerating the ammoniacal lixiviant and the copper loaded organic phase is stripped in spent electrolyte returned from the electrowinning plant where ultra-high quality SX-EW copper is produced. The solid leach residue can, if required, be upgraded by flotation to produce a high-grade copper concentrate with improved fuel values and a pyrite tail for disposal. After an 18-month bench and pilot plant scale program and an engineering feasibility study, Minera Escondida Limitada decided to build an 80 000 tonnes of copper per year facility near Antofagasta, Chile. The installed investment cost amounted to around $160 million. The plant went into commercial production in November 1994 and better than 99.9995 per cent Cu cathodes were produced right from the start. BHP believes that the process and the commercial plant are an excellent example of a novel approach advancing the science of copper metallurgy in harmony with present demands for environmentally sound processes and high quality products.

With oxygen conditioning routinely used in both the lead and zinc circuits at Pasminco Elura Mine a more sophisticated method of determining oxygen demand was required. It is known that different ore types have different oxygen consumption rates, however oxygen is added at a fixed rate regardless of ore type in the plant. Therefore, a simple laboratory test was devised to measure the oxygen demand of ores. The paper describes the technique employed, and provides an interpretation of the results. These data, together with pulp chemical measurements (Eh, pH and EDTA extraction data) were correlated against laboratory flotation performance to establish the relationship between oxygen demand and the position of the grade/recovery curve.

The theory of froth flotation developed slowly, in almost all cases lagging behind practical developments in the operation of flotation processes. This was largely the result of a lack of understanding of the required basic principles of chemistry and physics, many of which were being developed at the same time. A review of some of the early theories propounded is worthwhile, and should encourage those who are presently studying or practicing flotation to exercise some care in claiming a complete understanding of the underlying phenomena in the art. This paper considers theories presented up to and including those in Principles of Mineral Dressing by Antoine M Gaudin (1939). Of course, developments since that time are important, but they are beyond the scope of this discussion.

The mineral exploration industry is increasingly aware of the importance of the relationship between mineralogical data and geochemical assay results. However, until recently, the cost and time constraints of most techniques for analysing alteration mineralogy have precluded detailed alteration studies. These impediments have been reduced by the development of the Portable Infrared Mineral Analyser (PIMA), a field portable infrared spectrometer that allows rapid (in field) and cost effective analysis of alteration minerals including subtle variations in mineral crystallinity and composition.   A major application of this technology is in mapping mineralogical variations within hydrothermal alteration systems. Using actual case study examples this paper introduces two approaches to using the PIMA data: 1. for directly mapping alteration systems and using the PIMA data to provide vectors to mineralisation, and 2. for establishing empirical relationships between geochemical data and PIMA spectral data. These applications demonstrate that this technology can be an invaluable tool for targeting and mapping alteration and mineralisation.

Field-based research was conducted to investigate the performance of field portable X-ray fluorescence (FPXRF) in the analysis of reverse circulation (RC) drill chips in iron ore exploration. For years, FPXRF has been considered unsuitable for iron ore exploration due to the limitations of the elements it is capable of analysing for, in particular its inability to measure light elements (Mg, Al, Si, P, S). With the advent of the use of silicon drift detectors (SDD) in FPXRF, light elements are now measurable elements. However, doubt over the appropriate use of this new technology still exists due to the absence of reliable comparative field data. These doubts concerned the ability of the FPXRF data to correlate strongly with the laboratory assay of the same samples. It was believed that inconsistent grain size and other variables not being controlled would contribute greatly to this perceived unreliability.We tested RC chip samples on-site in the Pilbara, with the portable Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser for a range of elements including Fe, Mn, Al, Si and S and then compared the results with laboratory assay data. A strong correlation indicates that the FPXRF results are reliable. Furthermore, to show the effect of simple sample preparation, we also analysed pulps of the same samples in the same way.The correlations were good for all of the elements of interest for the RC chip samples (R2 values between 0.82 and 0.9), and excellent for the pulps (R2 values between 0.89 and 1). The results also showed a direct correlation between sample preparation and improved quality of results with the FPXRF. This indicates that FPXRF can produce data from unprepared RC chips for Al and Si that, when compared with laboratory assays, is reliable for a field application in drilling and grade control. This paper will address this question from the point of view of a drill and blast engineer or researcher working in open cut and underground mining operations. The paper will establish a common set of reference standards for high-speed imaging and data capture, which engineers and researchers can apply when deciding which type of imaging technology is appropriate. It will present an overview of current image analysis technologies and practices in use across a range of appropriate scientific fields and draw lines of commonality of approach between these fields and the field of mining and blasting applications analysis and research. In addition, the paper will examine the different technologies from an image quality and data stream reference point, ease of operation, cost, and reliability parameters. Finally, this paper will present an argument for the hybridisation of established and new technologies which could provide a more beneficial approach to the use of imaging as a tool of quality control, research and analysis in the mining based industries. This will include a novel approach to digital high-speed imaging and data analysis in the field, which should deliver high-quality images and data analysis in a time frame that is more appropriate to the need for immediate action, analysis and problem solving.

When an iron orebody nears its end of life, the extracted material can become increasingly problematic to handle. Higher moisture content occurs as larger portions of originally-below-water-table material is mined, which in some deposits is accompanied by further changes in physical and/or chemical properties present along the edges of the orebody. Plant delays related to problematic material have affected all of BHP’s mining hubs to various degrees. Following the recent successful work in Yandi, where the development of an index to quantify the handleability of channel iron ore deposits resulted in an increase in extracted volumes and an extension to the expected life-of-mine, the value of implementing similar indices for bedrock iron ore deposits has been recognised. A materials handling index has been developed by combining observed empirical relationships between material properties and processing plant performance. Indices for each deposit were further refined and optimised by implementing a back-testing strategy which facilitated an understanding of what weighting or scaling each of the contributing components should carry to yield the highest success rate of predicting actual delays at a given plant. Currently materials handling indices are deployed to all mine sites and are made available in block models as well as calculated for individual blasthole and production samples. Values in block models are obtained by predicting the required properties using machine learning models, whereas hyperspectral data is used to ‘measure’ some of those properties on a sample level. This paper discusses the work that has been undertaken to obtain materials handling indices, the testing that has been done to optimise them, and what processes have been developed to ensure the best metrics are being used in the different planning and scheduling horizons to optimise extraction.

Measurement of the net percolation from the base of a cover system into the underlying waste material is a key component of a cover system monitoring program. The units of measure (ie a percentage of precipitation or rainfall) are simple to understand for all stakeholders, which increases the importance of obtaining representative net percolation values. In general, lysimeters are used to measure net percolation across the cover material-waste material interface; however, the design of lysimeters for cover system monitoring programs in the mining industry have typically not considered fundamental aspects of lysimeter design. Lysimeter design is typically thought of as being conceptually simple, when in reality the design, installation, and operation of lysimeters is often counter-intuitive, due to the complexities of flow through unsaturated soil systems. This paper puts forward a methodology for lysimeter design while also presenting the fundamental design variables that should be considered. Lysimeter design for differing climates, cover materials, and waste materials is discussed. Finally, the performance of lysimeter designs previously installed in the field at sites in Australia, Canada, and the United States are subjected to numerical modelling to determine whether net percolation is being measured properly.

Solutions of acetonitrile in water dissolve water soluble copper(I) chloride. Removal of volatile acetonitrile from the resulting solutions, by distillation with low grade steam, precipitates pure copper(I) chloride. This is used to purify a crude copper chloride sublimate from the chlorination of nickel matte but is applicable to other sources of copper(I) chloride. The pure product can be converted to pure copper(I) oxide, copper(II) oxychloride or pure copper metal directly.

"In the past decade, increased processing capacity combined with precision robotics in high resolution spectrometers has resulted in a new generation of high-speed hyperspectral core logging systems. The application of these multisensor automated platforms provides a key advancement in the characterisation of metal resources. The development of this technology has allowed for comprehensive, drill core-based, mine-scale rock mass characterisation studies. Here we propose a new method for the extraction of parameters that seek to more accurately quantify ground conditions, including quantified rock mass rating (RMR) and the Rock Tunnelling Quality (Q) Index. Data inputs include rock quality designation (RQD), number of joint sets, joint roughness, joint alteration and joint spacing. Geologists and geotechnical engineers have historically collected these inputs by manually logging drill core. With automated core scanning technologies, these parameters can be estimated from the acquired image data and used to objectively calculate RMR and Q-index values for oriented core.Corescan is an automated hyperspectral core scanner that uses a 3D laser profiling system to measure the height of the surface of drill core. This technology allows for rapid core analysis to produce detailed fracture and rock condition data. Through an integrated geometallurgical approach, the proposed methodology will test the accuracy of joint measurement using the height profile Corescan data from oriented drill core. This will be combined with joint roughness and alteration mineralogy measured from the hyperspectral images to calculate the RMR and the Q-index continuously downhole. The values obtained can then be compared to the traditional, manual geotechnical log data. If the precision is sufficient, these techniques can then be applied site-wide to automate the collection and modelling of key ground condition classification indices across an entire deposit. Compared to the laborious manual geotechnical logging procedures that currently form the industry standard, utilisation of core laser profile data and high resolution red-green-blue (RGB) images provide an opportunity to collect large volumes of consistent geotechnical data, which can increase the efficiency and accuracy of deposit scale geotechnical models.CITATION:Harraden, C L, Berry, R and Lett, J, 2016. The aim of a transportation system in an underground mine is to move the rock masses from one location to another in the most preferable manner by minimising the long and short-term operational costs. A continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for continuous investigation of the current and new underground transportation systems. In an underground mine, an orepass is a common system used to transfer the material to the lower levels. If this system loses the ability to transport or store the necessary material capacities, it would result in production disturbances. In this paper, discrete event simulation (DES) was utilised to analyse the material inflow and outflow of the orepass systems when subjected to the different conditions. The study presented in this paper is based on the Malmberget mine, the second largest underground sublevel caving (SLC) iron ore operation in the world.

The Miwah prospect lies on the dilational 070¦ trending Miwah Lineament near its intersection with northerly oriented fractures within Pliocene volcanic rocks exposed between a NW trending segment of the dextral transcurrent Sumatra Fault, and the more northerly trending Samalanga-Sipopok Fault to the east. These faults reflect the continued interaction between stresses from the India-Australia plate located to the southwest, and spreading within theAndaman Sea to the north of Sumatra. A system of deep seated faults is believed to have facilitated emplacement of post-Miocene magmas and Quaternary volcanic centres at shallow crustal levels throughout northern Sumatra. Miwah mineralisation is associated with variably dipping structurally and lithologically controlled argillic and advanced argillic alteration. An oxidised supergene leached zone and a recent, thin, unaltered tuff blanket partly overlie the mineralisation. Mineralised zones are commonly brecciated and veined, and display quartz, quartz-alunite, quartz-alunite¦pyrophyllite¦kaolinite replacement assemblages, surrounded by more weakly mineralised, often vugghy quartzalunite¦pyrophyllite¦kaolinite advanced argillic, and argillic zones of quartz-kaolinite, quartz¦pyrophyllite¦kaolinite and smectite-illite-quartz. Propylitic assemblages are marginal to more intensely altered zones. Hypogene copper mineralisation is typified by enargite, luzonite, and covellite. The host mineral to gold is uncertain at present. Rare barite, native sulfur, and ?telluride also occur. Bornite and chalcopyrite have been observed in transported altered rocks in faults. Generally the mineralisation is anomalous in precious metals, locally enriched in Cu, erratic in Pb, and depleted in Zn, with a good correlation between Cu-As-Ag.

Yuanjing processing plant is a scheelite and wolframite plant in southern China. Water shortages and recent environmental regulations mean that the plant must reuse the wastewater that comes from the mining operation. This paper describes the efforts to reuse the mining and ore washing wastewater (MOW) in the processing plant. Initial attempts to reuse the MOW in the strong magnetic separation were unsuccessful because the magnetic media pack was seriously fouled by the micro-fine precipitate generated. The focus changed to reuse the MOW in the scheelite flotation circuit, which includes one roughing, one cleaning and three scavenging steps. Laboratory batch tests showed this would likely be successful because using MOW reliably improved the flotation performance in the laboratory tests. Then a 20 day industrial trial was run in the plant. The trial was very successful with the enrichment ratio of WO3 increasing from 17.4 to 23.6, while the recovery remained around 79.2 per cent. The industrial trial was so successful the company immediately adopted the new scheme, which has remained in use ever since. This technical solution not only alleviated serious water shortages, and satisfied environmental regulations but also improved the plant performance.
