The general perspective has been taken from the viewpoint of operating and maintenance experience.The sequence begins with ore breaking and transport and proceeds through milling operations. The paper is in two sections, first, mechanical equipment, second, electrical equipment. A brief outline of a scheme for using gravel wash for stope filling, which is in course of installation, has also been given.

Management of information systems for data collection is essential to maintain data integrity and continuity, and manage loss control on a large world-class mine such as Telfer Gold Mine. This paper aims to describe the individual systems and protocols of geological data capture at Telfer, then focus on Quality Assurance Quality Control data as an example of loss control in practice. Loss control systems are required to provide capacity, flexibility, structure and management tools to enhance data interrogation. The data that have been collected can then provide geological, financial, environmental, and contractual information to optimise management of business best practice. Telfer Gold Mine is a wholly owned and operated subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. The mine is located in a remote area of NW Western Australia, and has been operating for 20 years. Geological data have been collected at Telfer since 1973. The data include drilling, assay, geological, survey, structural and geophysical data. Data management has evolved through many systems with data stored on many different hardware and software platforms. Commencing in 1995, collation, standardisation and validation of the historic data was completed. This has resulted in the first Access based drill hole database incorporating all available drilling data. This drill hole database, now hosted in SQL Server, is the hub for all geology related data management systems. The Telfer Gold Mine Geology Department has developed a series of inter-related database systems in order to manage the core geology business issues. Databases relating to drill hole planning, drill contract management, geological logging, accounting (standard costing, forecasting, invoice reconciliation), quality control (QAQC), and environment rehabilitation have all been developed to manage loss control. Management effort to provide adequate data systems and protocols has driven the system from concept to utilisation. The improved productivity, data integrity and data analysis capabilities provided by the new database systems at Telfer have allowed for greater confidence in decision making. Systems such as the drill hole and QAQC databases, when utilised in the proper manner provide up-to-date data analysis for resource audits and contract negotiations. The loss control systems are essential to maintain confidence in data integrity and hence directly effect the future of mining at Telfer.

Tonnage and grade are the principal reported components of mineral resource estimates but tonnage is a derivative of two more fundamental estimates; volume and bulk density. Typically, most of the effort in a resource estimation study is directed towards grade and volume, yet poor application of bulk density data to resource models can result in significant biases. The impact on tonnage estimates is easily recognised but poor density estimates may also introduce subtle biases into the grade estimates. Methods for measuring bulk density have been discussed previously. This paper focuses on the manipulation of bulk density data and the extension of bulk density from essentially point measurements to block estimates within resource models. Bulk density is a continuous, geologically controlled, spatial variable and should be treated as such. Issues such as combining data from multiple sources, sample support and the interdependence of bulk density and grade estimates must be resolved. The statistical and geostatistical techniques used for grade estimation are, under the right circumstances, equally applicable to bulk density. The importance of bulk density needs to be recognised. With robust raw data and correct estimation procedures, better estimates of bulk density can be obtained and both local and global tonnage and grade estimates can be improved.

The demand for steel products in modern society is prompting the iron ore industry to optimise their operations to ensure sustainability of fines and lump products. One of the key components in the iron ore transportation chain are belt conveyors. The energy consumption of modern belt conveyor systems has reduced considerably over the past few decades, however, there is still significant scope for further reductions, especially when heavily loaded long overland belt conveyors are considered. A new rail based continuous bulk material transportation system has been developed by researchers at the University of Newcastle to reduce the energy consumption of heavily loaded and long overland conveyors. The Rail-Running Belt Conveyor technology is a state-of-the-art continuous belt conveying technology which provides an innovative and novel departure from conventional continuous bulk material transportation systems with significant energy and economic benefits. This paper presents an overview of a Rail-Running Belt Conveyor variant which considers an enclosed belt. Enclosed belt conveying has the benefits of encapsulating the bulk material, and thereby reducing dust emissions and moisture ingress, in addition to being able to negotiate smaller radius horizontal and vertical curves leading to greater flexibility. To quantify the primary differences between conventional conveying technologies, the Denver office of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (USA) developed a case study for an 11 km long conveyor. The conveyor design throughput was 2750 t/h and included a small net elevation loss of 10 m. When considering CAPEX the Rail-Running Pipe Conveyor equipment supply cost is approximately 45 per cent of the cost of a conventional pipe conveyor, while savings upwards of US$50M emerge for CAPEX combined with five years of OPEX. The savings vary with the topography and density of the bulk commodity, with iron ore generally showing increased savings because the high bulk density increases rubber losses in conventional conveyors.

Due to the high energy consumption of milling, it is desirable to improve the efficiency of this process. One alternative to reduce energy and material consumption while optimising production yield in mill operation is through balanced design and selection of liners. Over-design of liners leads to increased life but at a cost to grinding performance, a relationship which to date has not been studied closely. This paper provides a description of this process of liner life cycle optimization and presents initial results from the first of two life cycles being studied for a 32 foot (ft) SAG mill. The use of commercially proven high resolution laser scanning based liner shape information provided by the MillMapper® software correlated with well controlled site surveys at various points in the liner life was used as the basis for comparison. The survey data was modelled in JKSimMet to provide direct comparisons of mill performance. This potentially provides a methodology for the design of liners that maintain a favourable shape for the majority of liner life, yielding desirable production parameters such as lower specific energy consumption and higher throughput, while at the same time maintaining practical liner life cycles.

The Golden Cross project was a joint venture between Coeur NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company (20 per cent). The site is located in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km north-west of Waihi, on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the North Island. The mine-site is situated close to the Coromandel Range Divide between the headwaters of the Waitekauri River and the Martoto Stream. The site has a history of Gold Mining dating back to 1892. The more recent mine comprised an open pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998, MacGillivray, Maton and Goldstone (2000).Doug Hood Ltd commenced the first of three contracts on site in September 1997 and was responsible for completing the final stages of open pit mining, landslide remedial works mine closure and rehabilitation works. The Mill Closure and Rehabilitation and Drainage Works contract, for which this submission relates, commenced in September 1999 and was officially completed by Doug Hood Ltd. on the 26 May 2001.This paper endeavours to highlight the project objectives and backgrounds them against the difficulties experienced with respect to the site-specific conditions, the design complexities and risks associated with the contract, from a contractorÆs perspective.

The quality and quantity of Australia’s secondary deposits, which include tailings streams and tailings dams, are higher than most countries’ primary deposits. In addition, these secondary deposits have already been mined and processed, meaning that the recovery of high-grade product requires low capital and operating costs.The most widely used process for the recovery of these valuable fine and ultra-fine hematite iron particles is the wet high-intensity magnetic separation technique, originally developed by Dr Jones over 55 years ago. Many of the original machines are still working today.The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the capabilities in terms of grade and yield of using sophisticated magnetic separation modules. All results and figures are obtained from test work and design and engineering work with material from the Pilbara. In addition, consideration is given to dewatering of iron ore product and tailings.Two types of tailings have been identified for processing. Firstly, tailings that have already been deposited in a tailings storage facility, and secondly, live tailings streams from an existing wet iron ore beneficiation plant. In both cases, the technical and practical results are shown along with relevant flow sheets and plant layouts. Finally, this paper highlights the total predicted power and water consumption, capital requirements and projected operating expenses.The results show that the operating costs are significantly lower than the mining and processing operations that are required for an equivalent amount of iron ore. The recovery of iron depends on various factors but is within the 30–50 per cent range at an equivalent grade to the mainstream product. Another significant benefit is that the magnetic separation process is water positive, meaning that water is released rather than added in the process.The processing of the Pilbara’s secondary deposits will therefore result in an overall reduction in operating costs, an increase in product yield from a plant, extend the life-of-mine and offer environmental benefits by reducing the tailings footprint and water usage.The quality and quantity of Australia’s secondary iron ore deposits and tailings are such that many other countries would judge these as equivalent to primary deposits. The geochemical properties of Kaiata Mudstone and Brunner Coal Measures are evaluated in order to determine their suitability for placement at the proposed Cypress and existing Stockton mines. Correct scheduling of this waste material is needed in order to prevent sulfide oxidation and the generation of acid rock drainage. The Kaiata Mudstone has both acid generating and acid neutralizing properties. Results from this study and previous research from Kingett Mitchell Ltd (2003), indicate that within the Kaiata Mudstone sulphur content decreases with distance away from the Brunner Coal Measure/Kaiata Mudstone contact, while calcium carbonate content increases; sulphur values range from 0.33 to 4.23 wt %; and the acid neutralizing capacity ranges from 0 to 10.4 wt %. The Brunner Coal Measures have a low capacity to neutralize acid and sulphur content is variable ranging from 0.25 to 3.5 wt %. Appropriate control measures are therefore needed for the Brunner Coal Measures and any Kaiata Mudstone within close proximity to its contact. Tests have been undertaken to develop a rapid field or laboratory procedure to define the potentially acid-forming from the non-acid-forming Kaiata material. Results indicate that paste pH, Net Acid Generation (NAG) and Carbonate Bomb tests are suitable. Results from the Carbonate Bomb Test show a strong relationship with the Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) and the Net Acid Production Potential (NAPP), indicating that this method may efficiently determine non-acid forming material in the field within fifteen minutes. Ongoing research includes kinetic column and shake extraction tests. These tests will quantify what trace elements could be leached from the waste rock and provide information on the usefulness of alkaline producing products such as Bauxsol, Limestone and Cement Kiln Dust.

As the mining industry looks to new technologies for a safe work environment and increased production rates, so should emergency response teams when dealing with organisational incidents. Implementation of technology has transformed the nature of incidents within the international mining community with lower frequency, high impact events replacing high frequency, low impact incidents of the past. In turn the approach to mines rescue response and preparation has naturally diversified. New rescue technologies when applied effectively can only further advance preparation and the response of mine rescues teams. This paper discusses some of the changes associated with mines rescue as the industry embraces technology. It highlights some recent rescue responses and their approach and gives examples of some of the new technologies being used for improved mines rescue.

The Kiruna mine produced about 19 Mt processed iron ore in 1999 using sublevel caving. General failure in the hangingwall has been widely studied and its mechanism is rather well understood. Failure in the footwall is more recent and not perfectly explained. Plane shear failure and Hoek and BrayÆs circular failure charts were successfully used to match the first surveyed failure surfaces. The footwall is not free yet but covered by a caved waste rock abutment whose exact behaviour is poorly known. Based on new field data and numerical models (FLAC), the following paper presents recent improvements in understanding the Kiruna mineÆs footwall failure process.

Most metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from different feed stocks – sinter, lump ore and pellets. Sinter is the main iron-containing feed to the blast furnace and can constitute up to 70–85 per cent of the total ferrous burden. As sinter quality is a key element for stable blast furnace operation, the textural, chemical and physical characteristics of the sinter are very important. Two major factors that affect sinter strength are mineralogy and porosity. This study utilised optical image analysis (OIA) to characterise sinter mineralogy, and the results were compared to those obtained by manual point counting under the optical microscope.Two major mineral characteristics of iron ore sinter are the presence of primary (unreacted) and secondary (derived from melt) hematite. Standard OIA, which is based on RGB thresholding, is not able to distinguish them as they have the same reflectivity; however, primary and secondary hematite in iron ore sinter have a different morphology. The CSIRO-developed OIA software Mineral4/Recognition4 has a unique feature to identify various textures/morphologies of the same mineral. Together with other capabilities of the Mineral4/Recognition4 software, this feature was used to identify different types of hematite and silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium and other common sinter phases, such as magnetite, larnite, glass and remnant aluminosilicates.A visual comparison of the sinter mineralogy present in optical photomicrographs and that present in the mineral maps created automatically by the Mineral4 module of the CSIRO software confirmed the accuracy of the automated mineral identification.CITATION:Donskoi, E, Hapugoda, S, Lu, L, Poliakov, A, Peterson, M and Haileslassie, A, 2015. The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.

Pilot-Plant Testing of Ammoniacal-Cyanidation for Gold Recovery from Copper Gold-Bearing Ore The results of pilot-plant tested ammoniacal-cyanidation of gold recovery from copper gold-bearing ore are presented in this paper. This ore is from a deposit of Russian Federation with gold and copper grade 9.5 g/t and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Copper is largely present as malachite and azurite. The presence of chalcopyrite and bornite is also observed. In order to recover gold, gravity is recommended. Two options of ammoniacal-cyanidation using leaching of gravity tails, CIP and filtration, were tested. It was found that ammoniacal-cyanidation using filtration of leaching tailings and recycled solutions is the most optimal option. The proposed flow sheet provides for 89.7 per cent gold recovery from gravity tailings at the consumption of NaCN 0.9 kg/t and (NH4)2CO3 7.5 - 9 kg/t. Compared to conventional cyanidation, this technology decreases the consumption of sodium cyanide from 4 up to 0.9 kg/t at the same gold recovery. It can be recommended for the treatment of copper gold-bearing ores with the similar composition.

"The mining industry is constantly seeking methods for optimising the exploitation of mineral resources, such as iron ore, in a sustainable and eco-efficient manner for economic and social benefit. When faced with resources that have mineralogical or textural complexity, poorer grades or geological variability, it is particularly important to apply a comprehensive geometallurgical approach to the development of the mining operation, from resource definition through to processed product. Integral to this approach is the quantitative characterisation of representative samples across the whole orebody.A key factor that associates the geological characteristics of iron ores to their processing response is ore texture. While the classification of samples on the basis of chemical or physical properties alone is often not sufficient to predict their processing behaviour, classification and quantification of texture types can be effectively correlated to metallurgical performance in processes such as blending, beneficiation, pellet making, sintering and ironmaking. In this paper we present a case study of the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of cultural heritage management strategies at the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea. We discuss the contextual drivers and constraints, and outline the ways in which Lihir Gold Limited is aiming to set new industry bench marks for the region through the development of values-based best practice cultural heritage management programs. This approach is largely based upon a compliance partnership with a local stakeholder group. We argue that such partnerships are a prudent means of mitigating company risk, while constituting a far more necessary tool for local people in the reconceptualisation and negotiation of the experiences of significant social change and modernisation experienced in the context of recent resource development.

The Bentley underground mine, which is located 60km north of Leonora, Western Australia, is owned and operated by Round Oak Minerals Pty Limited. A high-grade Zn-Cu Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide (VMS) orebody, Bentley was discovered in 2008 with production commencing in 2012. Long-hole open stoping is employed to mine the steeply dipping ore body, and in recent years the Avoca method has been adopted. This requires all development in a particular area of the mine to be completed prior to stoping commencing in a bottom up sequence. Voids are commonly backfilled with loose Run-of-Mine (ROM) waste loose rockfill (LRF); or alternatively cemented rockfill (CRF) can be used. Stopes in the 3860 AOS and 3900 AOS panels were located below previously extracted Avoca zones, with LRF situated immediately above them. These high-grade stopes were originally designed with rib and sill pillars to maintain control of the existing backfill during extraction. Due to changing factors over time, including mining economics, alternative options to achieve full extraction of the stopes were reviewed, including: • Mining small successive full height stopes which would involve drawing a blanket of LRF down with the extracted ore (stoping under waste); • Stabilisation of the existing LRF above the stopes and implementing a primary/secondary stoping sequence, with the primary stopes backfilled using a cement fill. An assessment of these options was undertaken which determined that the second full extraction method was the most beneficial to the operation, and could be achieved using a cement grout (Minova’s FB200 grout) to stabilise the LRF in conjunction with implementing a sequence where the primary stopes would be backfilled with cemented aggregate fill (CAF). Footwall drives were developed adjacent to the rockfilled stopes, allowing for the installation of horizontal grouting conduits, as well as providing access to the top of the planned 3860 and 3900 level stopes for the placement of CAF. An interval at the base of the previously rockfilled stopes was grouted at multiple horizons to achieve the required thickness, with a comprehensive quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) process undertaken. Primary stopes were CAF backfilled via an arrangement of downhole winzes, linking the top of primary stopes to cross-cuts developed off the associated footwall drives. CAF was delivered underground through an open reticulation network that was extended to the specific levels. Overall the successful implementation of the revised mining method effectively increased ore recovery while maintaining control of overbreak and dilution, providing significant financial upside. This was achieved while maintaining effective controls in light of the changes to the risk profile. Stabilisation of the existing rockfill has allowed the extraction of stopes to full height, including the originally designed sill pillars, representing an average 23% increase in ore tonnes on the initial design, with dilution from the stope crowns averaging less than 1%. The use of CAF in association with primary/secondary stoping, eliminating the need for rib pillars, has yielded an average 47% increase in ore tonnes compared to the base case mine design.

WearApp provides expertise for assessing the degradation of removable screening media panels on vibrating screens right in a user’s pocket. Through the WearApp application, users can simply take a picture of a panel using their mobile, enter some basic information and have the application assess the wear to provide a recommendation for whether the panel needs to be replaced. Where traditional mechanisms for assessing panel wear only measure a few points across the panel face and rely on having personnel with specialised knowledge available to perform the assessment, WearApp uses deep learning models to analyse the entire panel face and support the user to make an informed decision. The application works through analysing a panel image and using a model to automatically detect the corners of the panel. Given the known dimensions of the panel, this enables the application to calibrate the pixel size against a known reference. A second set of models then detect the apertures and measure their dimensions. With the aperture dimensions defined the application assesses the wear of the panel through referencing a stored 3D model of the aperture. Finally, the data from each aperture is collated and the wear of the entire panel face defined. Since WearApp performs measurement of the entire panel face, it also allows the user to perform a more detailed analysis of the panel’s wear profile. Where typically, the panel wear is only measured in a few locations, WearApp’s analysis enables users to visualise the panel wear across the entire panel face, identifying areas of high wear that could be leading to premature panel replacement. Additionally, because the entire panel face is measured the change in screening efficiency can be calculated accurately for the worn panel, even taking into account the impact of aperture pegging by small rocks.

Oceana Gold as part of their environmental strategy are looking at various methods for cost-effective revegetation of their tailings dams. Under the concept of revegetating the tailings this study looked at several issues. These issues were; testing different methods of revegetation, arsenic (As) uptake in vegetation with respect to capping thickness, and background As levels in farmland areas above mineralised rocks. A number of plots were set up in a temporarily disused tailings dam to trial the direct sowing of ryecorn into the tailings.   Ryecorn was sown in sandy tailings (ca 1000 mg/kg As) and then covered with oxidised schist to anchor the seeds. This proved successful and ryecorn was established. Once the plots covered with oxidised schist were growing, 1 m and 2 m strips were sown on the sheltered side of the existing plots without the covering of oxidised schist. The uncovered plots also established successfully. From this set of trials a sowing plan can be developed that uses a minimum of resources to successfully establish vegetation. The maximum As content of the ryecorn was 80 mg/kg. Clover, Yorkshire fog and ryegrass plant matter was sampled from a pot trial that used different thicknesses of topsoil covering tailings material. As the thickness of topsoil increased, the amount of As taken up decreased. Soil samples were taken from farmland areas which were known to have elevated levels of As (up to 1000 mg/kg) in the top 10 cm. Vegetation samples were also taken from the same locations, and show the As levels in plants is <50 mg/kg.

Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site. I was delighted to be invited to be patron of this Joint Conference, but the challenging task you have set yourselves, and your speakers' depth of expertise, deny anyone, even the patron, the opportunity to be patronizing. Australia's history has been inextricably link- ed with the fortunes of our great mining industry. That link will remain. Just as the gold rushes of the last century, and the discoveries at Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill changed the lives of generations, so the more recent development activity in iron ore, bauxite, nickel, coal, and uranium are having a significant impact on the lives of Australians today. The minerals industry has contributed to Aust- ralia's jobs and prosperity. Mining is not free of problems, but so long as safeguards are strong and appropriate the net benefits the mining in- dustry brings Australia will continue to be enor- mous. We rely on our mining industry to find, prove, develop and sell our minerals profitably, and my Government is committed to maintaining a healthy mining industry.
