The paper introduces the problems encountered in designing open stopes and briefly examines the factors that determine the final stope dimensions achieved after mining is completed. A case study is presented where monitoring of a stope was considered necessary due to the expected formation of a highly stressed crown pillar above the stope. The influence, on the mining approach adopted, of a yielding crown pillar is discussed. Monitoring and numerical modelling were used to develop an understanding of the behaviour of the particular stope as mining progressed. A comparison between the measured displacements and the numerical predictions at an interim stage of mining was carried out to assist in choosing the final sequences involved in completing the stope.

Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. Accurate measurement of rock mass response during the mining of massive underground orebodies is essential, as mines become larger and deeper. These measurements enable: provision of quantitative data for optimal pit slope design and engineering; monitoring of the stability of deep pit slopes, the long-term integrity of shafts and large-scale underground infrastructure, and long-term measurements of deformation or rock mass creep following the mining process for environmental management. Strainmeters traditionally used for deformation measurement have neither the long-term stability nor the high sensitivity to perform measurements in these applications. This paper describes a new precision borehole strain monitoring system (GTS) currently deployed by CSIRO Exploration and Mining, which has the potential to solve these new issues in rock mass deformation monitoring. This technology was originally developed for use in hard rock mines (Gladwin, 1977) and refined considerably for earthquake research (Gladwin et al, 1994; Gwyther et al, 1992). A case study of the use of the GTS in monitoring longwall coal mining over the period 1993 - 1998 is presented.

The thermal conductivity of slag is critical for the efficiency of high temperature metallurgical processes such as the smelting reduction of ferroalloys, the ladle refining and the continuous casting mold flux in steelmaking. Experimental determination of slag’s thermal conductivity is fraught with challenges, as seen in yielding data for the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO system that are often inconsistent and widely dispersed. In molten slags of this system, thermal transport occurs via phonons within the network structure. To quantitatively describe thermal conductivity based on the microstructure, hightemperature Raman spectroscopy was employed to measure the silicate tetrahedra Qi (i = 0, 1, 2, 3), with Q4 species inferred from mass balance. This study also integrated molecular dynamics simulations to provide a fundamental understanding of the microstructure units distributions. Machine learning algorithms, especially deep neural networks, were applied to establish the relationship between slag composition and the configuration of tetrahedra. The thermal conductivities were then connected with silicate tetrahedra Qi using an Arrhenius-type formalism. This study sets the stage for extending our findings to more complex, multicomponent slags, enhancing their practical application in industrial processes.

A major constraint on sustaining high rates of production in the collieries of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales is the inability to develop panels fast enough to match the rates of extraction. This inability is particularly crippling in the case of retreat longwall mining and is due to nearly half the time in roadway drivage being spent on strata control operations such as roof support.Increased rates of roadway drivage and significantly improved roadway stability can be achieved by the application of yield pillars between parallel roadways. These pillars are designed to yield immediately upon formation and transfer the damaging roof loads away from the immediate vicinity of the roadways. Since the width of the yield pillar is the key to their successful application, it was determined through the Yield Pillar Experiment conducted by Kembla Coal and Coke Pty Ltd at West Cliff Colliery.Three experimental headings, each nominally 5.5 m wide and 2.8 m high, were driven to form two tapering pillars. The width of these pillars progressively decreased from 24 m to 3 m over a length of 154 m. The convergence between the roof and floor of the headings measured at various cross-sections corresponding to predetermined widths of the pillars are analysed in this paper to evaluate the stability of the tapering pillars at the different widths.The width of the yield pillar in a three heading development layout at West Cliff Colliery was determined to be 7.5 m.

The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.

Long hole drilling underground has come a long way since 'down the hole' surface drills were first taken underground. The underground miners have progressively developed the use of long hole stope drilling from the 'quarry blast' to a precise and selective removal of ore while leaving the remaining structure as undamaged as possible. To reach this position has involved the development of equipment and explosives to give the desired results. This paper reviews some aspects of long hole stope production drilling.

"Geometallurgical variables often cause problems to conventional geostatistical workflows. There are many variables; some are compositional and some are non-additive. They often show: complex multivariate relationships undersampling relative to conventional grade variables unequal sampling; that is, all variables are not available at all data locations.A variety of approaches have been developed over the years, but geostatisticians remain mostly focused on modelling rock types and a few grade variables with an abundance of data. The problems are reviewed and a chained workflow is presented where appropriate techniques are employed in sequence to permit reliable spatial prediction of geometallurgical variables. The spatial models may be used to assess the value of additional data, for prediction of process performance, for improved mine planning and other optimisation tasks. The chained workflow will include data transformations such as ratios and normal scores that make the variables amenable to geostatistical modelling. Data imputation techniques to account for missing values are considered with special consideration to spatial correlation with the available data. Decorrelation techniques such as the principal components, min/max autocorrelation factors and projection pursuit multivariate transformation are employed to manage massively multivariate modelling. Full distribution modelling must be considered to avoid biases in the prediction of non-additive variables. The post-processing of geometallurgical models must be streamlined for robustness and efficiency. The precise workflow varies according to the specific purpose of the study. PT Freeport Indonesia is currently building the DOZ mine. It is a 25 000 tonne/day block caving operation which is scheduled to reach designed production levels by the fourth quarter of 2002. This paper describes some of the issues and challenges faced by the operation when introducing a new undercut method part way through the project. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed as well as the expected benefits of the new method.

Most compact bucket wheel excavators in use are in the small to medium range. Large compact bucket wheel excavators compete directly with con- ventional longer boom excavators which have operational advantages over the large compact. There are, however, situations where the large com- pact excavator is viable. In the development of these large compacts there are a number of technical features to be addressed. In addition the SECV now propose to expand the concept to a large compact bucket wheel excavator with a bridge and loading unit for their Loy Yang Open Cut.

Risk exposure in tunnel projects is extremely high due to various factors such as variability of subsurface conditions, selection of inappropriate design and tunnelling methods, improper risk assessment on adjacent surface and subsurface structures and utilities, and inadequate contractual practices. The risks in tunnelling must be borne by the contractor, designer and the owner of a tunnelling project. There have been a number of improvements in the last ten to 15 years in the manner in which tunnel projects are developed and implemented in terms of their design, construction, financing and operations. One significant improvement has been the manner in which underground conditions and their risks are being managed. Owners are less willing to transfer the full responsibility to the contractor for managing the underground conditions, although this is a familiar manner in which underground major urban projects have been previously contracted and managed. The owners of tunnel projects in Singapore have advanced the risk management process for their projects through geotechnical interpretative baseline reports (GIBRs), geotechnical data reports (GDRs) and project specifications (PSs). This paper discusses industry practice and its development as well as the application during the preparation and use in Singapore on the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) and the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) project in Singapore. The DTSS trunk sewer is 48 km and ranges from 3.3 m to 6 m finished diameter up to 50 m below the ground. The underground conditions ranged from Old Alluvium, strengths of about 1 MPa to competent Bukit Tima granite, with strengths of over 230 MPa. The total route length of the MCE is about 5 km. About 3.6 km will be constructed underground, consisting of dual five-lane carriageways. The underground construction will be cut-and-cover, and 2.6 km will be constructed about 13 m underground, and 1 km of tunnel will range from 13 m to 24 m as the tunnel passes under a 420 m wide reach of Marina Bay, whose crossing will be constructed as a two-phase cofferdam.

This paper is concerned with the observation and analysis of bubble clusters in a laboratory flotation cell. A device was used in which bubbles were allowed to rise in clean water containing the same frother and collector concentration as in the cell. Bubble clusters were recorded using a high speed camera and analysed using an image analyser. Dodecyl amine was employed as a collector to float silica. The effect of impeller speed on the cluster behaviour was investigated. The results were interpreted in terms of cluster diameter and shape factor. The sizes of the bubbles forming the clusters were also measured and compared to the sizes of the independent bubbles in the cell. It was found that there was an optimum impeller speed in which the cluster diameter was a maximum. Higher agitation and the consequent higher power inputs resulted in cluster break-up while lower shear rates promoted cluster formation.

Clinoptilolites, modified with sodium, produced a material which has been tested for the ability to remove Hg (II) from aqueous nitric acid. The amount of adsorption depends on contact time, acid concentration of aqueous solution and initial mercury concentration. The study of the kinetics of mercury uptake revealed that all sorbents exhibit a fast rate of sorption. The highest sorption capacities were observed for sodium forms, and were up to five times higher than for the unmodified zeolite. The maximum sorption capacity toward mercury is determined as 0.093 ¦g/g at an initial concentration of 10.0 ¦g/L for a clinoptilolite from Tsagaantsav deposit (Mongolia). The sorption of Hg (II) has an ion-exchange nature and consists of three stages, ie the adsorption on the surface of microcrystals, the inversion stage and the ion exchange in the interior of the microcrystal. Sorption capacity decreases with the increase of mercury concentration. The presence of other metal ions such as Cd (II), Cu (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) increases Hg (II) uptake capacity. Finally, sorption for Hg (II) was investigated in batch systems to evaluate the short-term stability of the sorption properties.

For certain applications, steels have to feature a very distinct and well-defined level of cleanness in terms of the number and composition of non-metallic inclusions. Therefore, one crucial aspect of steelmaking is removing and controlling said non-metallic inclusions during the process. Particle removal during ladle refining comprises three stages, namely: 1. Flotation 2. Transport through the steel/slag interface 3. Dissolution of the particle in the slag. Only if all three stages are completed the particle can be considered as fully removed from the steel melt which, in turn, leads to the slag being one of the most influential parameters for inclusion removal and control. Depending on the composition of the particles and the slag, the dissolution can be controlled by different mechanisms. This study focuses on the diffusion-controlled dissolution of solid oxidic particles in slags. For this, a model of particle dissolution has been developed. For modelling diffusion, either the differential equation following Fick’s second law can be solved, or an analytical solution to this equation valid for stationary interfaces can be used. Both approaches allow for calculations of concentration profiles of the dissolving species in surrounding slag. From this, the mass flux can be derived, which finally leads to calculating the boundary layer velocity due to considerations of mass balance. In this work, both methods as well as results of dissolution experiments using High Temperature Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy are compared. This research aims to provide a framework for diffusion-based dissolution modelling in further expanding the understanding of particle dissolution in secondary metallurgy.

HORWOOD wrote: In view of the difficulty of obtaining accurate results when using plumb lines in shafts, owing to the effect of currents of air, the writer, over M years ago, devised a method of transferring oearings from the surface to, the underground workings independently of plumb lines.An attachment was procured for the theodolite consisting of a 45° prism enabling a view of a fine line stretched across the shaft at the surface to be observed from the bottom of the shaft. The instrument was set up in such a position that.a view of the portion of the surface line could be obtained as close as possible to the shaft timbers.By candle light signals an assistant at the surface moved his line so that the portion close to the side or end of the shaft coincided with the cross wires of the theodolite. The theodolite was then swung to enable the crosswires to traverse the surface line. It was a simple matter to transfer the bearing of the surface line to points in the drive extending from the shaft. Similarly the relation of the bearing of the surface line to the shaft, with which a connection was intended, was easily obtained.The success of this method was demonstrated at Broken Hill in making connections many hundreds of feet from the shafts from which these were driven.

Engineered soil covers are used for final closure options for both waste rock and tailings disposal facilities. Currently, cover construction requires excavation of appropriate cover material from a nearby site. If no suitable materials are available, the mine operation may have to ship appropriate materials long distances to the site before the construction of the cover can even begin. This has led to the proposal to engineer cover materials using existing waste materials from the mining operation. The paper presented here describes the results of a laboratory scale testing program to evaluate the potential for blending waste rock, smelter slag and tailings for the creation of a suitable cover material at a site in Canada. Tailings from the local mill, waste rock and slag were collected in the field and blended to create a material with an air entry value similar to the tailings and with physical strength similar to the waste rock. Testing indicated this mixed material could be blended at a consistency of a paste and was suitable for pumping. It can also be compacted to a high-density material. The preliminary results show that it may be possible to blend waste rock, slag and tailings into a material that can be utilised in the construction of a water retaining cover.

This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. However, the recent downturn in world market prices is more serious than previous slumps because in part it is due to technological advances 'in other countries which could have a permanent effect on the world trade of primary products.

Underground mine ventilation is now com monly simulated on a digital computer. Such a programme, incorporating natural ventilation has been modified by others to account for methane emission and elevated local tempera- tures. At Wollongong University, the pro- gramme was further developed and extensive interactive graphics incorporated such that any view of the three dimensional mine could be viewed, and superimposed upon that view are areas where a nominated parameter has exceeded a particular value - generally at a nominated time after a particular event and usually a fire/explosion of one type or another. A further programme was developed such that up to 20 'times' could be examined at a particu- lar location after say, a fuel rich fire at some other place in the mine. The output from this programme includes a plot of methane 1, smoke 1, temperature, pressure and air flow versus time - a most useful graphic to observe the limits of safe attendance in a particular Airway.
