Geometallurgical modelling is now a hot topic in deposit evaluation and in optimising mine performance; however, its history is long and varied. Historically metallurgical sampling has frequently suffered from a lack of data due to the cost of producing representative bulk samples. In the early 1990s geometallurgical modelling similarly suffered from a lack of data due to complex, time consuming and expensive sampling techniques. More recently, simple and relatively cheap tests for geometallurgical variables such as hardness, grindability, throughput, SAG power index, bond work index, crushing index, mineral recovery and concentrate grade have become widespread. The cheaper sampling has resulted in relatively large geometallurgical databases. However, most of the geometallurgical variables sampled are implicitly (and incorrectly) assumed to be additive when modelled by traditional geostatistical techniques, often leading to ill-informed and costly decisions. Geometallurgical variables are mostly non-additive so the current geostatistical challenge is to develop new approaches to dealing with this type of data. This paper briefly describes a historical case study of geometallurgical modelling of the George Fisher Pb-Zn mine completed in the mid 1990s, then outlines some of the current misconceptions of geometallurgical data and modelling techniques regularly applied to it, and finally discusses some recent developments in geometallurgical modelling, with examples from a number of current clients indicating the direction forward.

A case study examining the procedures and financial benefits of introducing dump leaching to augment the Mt Gibson Gold Project CIP operations is discussed. Metallurgical testwork, followed by pilot dump leach operations, confirmed that gold recoveries of greater than 60 per cent could be achieved by dump leaching Mt Gibson laterite ore. Capital and operating costs were determined. Pit optimisation using the Whittle FOUR-D optimisation program calculated an optimum cutover grade between CIP and dump leaching for one orebody. The resultant recalculation of reserves based on CIP and dump leach operating costs showed that reserves for that orebody could be increased from 329 000 tonnes at 1.9 g/t An, to 1 488 000 tonnes at 1.2 gh An. NPV for the CIP only option of $1.4 m, was increased to $4.0 m for the combined CIP/dump leach option. This technique can be applied to existing gold projects and to new Developments.

Flinders Mines is an ASX300 iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past three years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 740 Mt at a grade of 55.4 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains based on geometallurgical and geochemical boundaries. These domains are comprised of transported haematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant Channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded Brockman iron deposits (BID). On the basis of differences in physical and chemical characteristics, the DID have been divided into four discrete units. The four DID units form a stratigraphic sequence with the iron grade increasing and the contaminant concentrations decreasing with depth. The upper DID unit is lower grade and currently unlikely to provide a marketable product, without signifi cant beneficiation. The lower three DID units, together with the CID and BID, are of a higher quality and have the potential to yield marketable ore. The ability to define and recognise these different units has resulted in a more reliable and robust geological interpretation and hence greater confidence in the resulting resource model. This has been evident in the excellent conversion of inferred to indicated resources.

An experimental and theoretical study has been made of the drainage behaviour of two-dimensional packed beds drained from an outlet in the sidewall of the bed in order to identify the fundamental me- chanisms involved. Under these conditions a grad- ient develops in the air-liquid interface in the direction of flow with the interface tilting towards the outlet. This results in a significant volume of liquid being retained in the packing on completion of draining when the interface first reaches the bed outlet. Residual liquid volume and the shape of the air-liquid interface as a function of time were det- ermined experimentally in a two-dimensional packed bed where the packing consisted of glass spheres ranging in size from 0.6 to 10 mm dia. and the bed was drained at superficial liquid velocities rang- ing from 0.007 to 0.32cm/s. The test liquids used were water, glycerine/water solutions and kerosene resulting in a viscosity range of 1 to 10 mPa.s and a surface tension range of 0.0243 to 0.072 N/m. Assuming laminar flow within the bed, a compu- tational model was developed to predict both the liquid residual ratio and the temporal evolution of the drainage profile within the bed. The computed results were in good agreement with the experimental data over the entire range of conditions invest- igated. the computational model was used to estimate the relative importance of the effects of changes in hearth conditions on residual slag volume for typ- ical blast furnace operating conditions. On the basis of the computed results it is concluded that coke quality is a major parameter affecting hearth drainage performance.

Shear strength parameters of compacted clay liners are needed to analyse the stability of mine waste dumps containing compacted clay liners as sealing layers for potentially acid forming waste rock. A representative clay sample was supplied by McArthur River Mine from the mine site in the Northern Territory, Australia, with an average as-supplied gravimetric moisture content of about 13.6%. The clay was compacted in a 100 mm by 100 mm direct shear box at the as-supplied moisture content to a dry density of 1.85 t/m3, representing the field compaction specification adopted by the mine. To determine the peak and ultimate shear strengths of the compacted clay, single-stage direct shear testing was carried out at nominal initial normal stresses of 50 kPa, 100 kPa and 200 kPa, representing shallow depths of burial in the North Overburden Emplacement Facility of about 2.8 m, 5.6 m and 11.1 m, respectively (assuming a waste rock wet unit weight of 18 kN/m3). Three shearing rates of 1 mm/min (rapid), 0.1 mm/min (intermediate) and 0.01 mm/min (slow) were applied to study the influence of shearing rate on shear strength. In addition, the development of a residual shear plane was tested by reversal and re-shearing in the direct shear box. In the first shearing, the peak and ultimate shear strengths are determined. The normal load was then removed and the box rewound to its starting position. The normal load was then re-applied and the specimen re-sheared. Two reversals were applied to each specimen, and it was found that there was no significant reduction in shear strength. Finally, based on a range of shear strengths obtained in the laboratory for McArthur River Mine clay and other materials by various laboratories over time, shear strength parameters for the compacted clay were recommended for use by the mine.CITATION:Xu, Y, Williams, D J and Hacker, J, 2018. My closest personal connection with the problems of rehabilitation comes from two years spent on a project at Weipa. At the beginning I am fairly certain that the engineers did not understand the mental processes of the ecologist they were dealing with. I am absolutely certain that the ecologist did not understand the minds of the engineers. This form of the two cultures problem is the root of some of the matters that lie behind this lecture. It is possible to establish a stabilising cover of vegetation on virtually any land surface, short of a cliff. While the biologist knows this he also knows that the physical and chemical nature of a given acre of land combines with climate to define quite sharply just what plants can be grown there. In the case of land after mining the range of plants may be quite limited. The engineer, and his masters in the accounting section, seem (in my experience) to expect that rehabilitation can be carried on with equal speed and facility in any location. This belief commonly leads to a situation where rehabilitation is not considered until mining is well under way. True, the mine must be proved as an assured profit- earner before money can be justified for the non-productive (to the miner) expense of rehabilitation. But when the miner finally starts rehabilitation he does not always get a convincing and speedy result. Furthermore, the failure may not be easy to overcome. This is even more likely to be the sequence of events if the miner wants, or is obliged, to specify the exact type of vegetation to be produced, e. g. commercial forest, pasture,' or the original native vegetation.

Wet sticky iron ore poses particular difficulties in every aspect of the material handling process. Material hang-ups in bins, pipes and chutes; carry-back and spillage due to insufficient belt cleaning; clogging of screens; malfunctioning of crushers as well as rat holing of gravity reclaimed stockpiles are all predominantly due to the inherent cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore (Roberts, 1993). Limited understanding and quantitative measures on the stickiness of such a material significantly lower the mining operation efficiency.This research aims to investigate the cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore on physical modelling, experimental techniques and numerical implementation. Initially, the suitable bridging mechanism that contributes to the cohesive and adhesive forces within the iron ore material was identified (Hering, Martin and Stohrer, 1989; Rumpf, 1958). A cohesion/adhesion energy density factor based contact model was then introduced to describe the stickiness of the material. Secondly, an experimental system was proposed to directly test the stickiness of the material. Such a system is able to obtain both the cohesive/adhesive shear force and tensile force of the material at a specific moisture content. Lastly, the implementation of the proposed cohesion/adhesion model into the discrete element modelling (DEM) software was also discussed. A cohesion/adhesion calibration for modelling wet sticky iron ore in DEM was then conducted to ensure the material modelled in the simulation is reflective of the reality.From the study, understanding of the cohesion/adhesion characteristics of the wet iron ore material is significantly enhanced. Experimental and numerical outcomes can be directly applied for better designing or optimising the material handling processes that involve wet sticky iron ore. This paper presents the results of a large scale survey of The Australasian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) membership. This survey aimed to understand and define the key issues and drivers that AusIMM members perceived would shape the development of the Australian minerals industry over the next 20 - 30 years. Nine hundred and fifty-nine participants rated the importance of 11 issues and six drivers (generated from interviews with AusIMM members), and 236 of these participants also provided qualitative descriptions of the future. Issues were defined as problems or opportunities for the minerals industry that may be controlled or influenced by the industry, while drivers were defined as those factors that will influence the direction of the industry that are not within the control of the industry. The quantitative data revealed that the top four issues, in order of their perceived importance to the Australian minerals industry, were: investment in exploration, workforce, health and safety, and innovation. The top three drivers in order of their perceived importance, were: economics of mining, global context and Australian society. While the top four issues were largely consistent across professional groups examined, metallurgy and mineral processing professionals rated water inputs and energy inputs significantly higher than the other professional groups. For the list of drivers, there was strong agreement regarding their ranked order of importance across the professional groups examined. Within the qualitative data, however, a single issue (technology) and a single driver (economics of mining) dominated participantsÆ descriptions of the future. These findings provide important input into a broader program of scenario development for the Australian minerals industry being undertaken by CSIRO and its partners. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of using a mixed methodology in generating these inputs to understand more fully how important stakeholders view the future and the factors that will shape it. The results of this study are also discussed with respect to the role that CSIRO may play in facilitating the exploration of uncertainty around the future of the Australian minerals industry.

Copper (Cu) is a critical metal in the transition to a low-carbon power supply. Presently, low-grade copper sulfide ores account for almost 80 per cent of the global reserves. Large amounts of water are required to process these low-grade copper ores. The mining industry utilises lixiviants from recycled water from different sources to conserve water, whilst enhancing Cu recovery. Some utilise intermediate to pregnant leach solutions, sea water, and processed water from electrowinning circuits with highly variable concentrations of ions. Previous studies have highlighted the formation of precipitates that passivate the surfaces of minerals in these low-grade copper ores and/or block flow paths for lixiviant during heap leaching. In this study, we utilised concepts of phase replacement to devise an innovative means of controlling precipitation and increasing copper recovery using industrial brine as opposed to freshwater. We propose the formation of Al-rich phases (such as AlSO4 + or alunite) to replace iron sulfate and iron hydroxysulfates (such as jarosite) during the chalcopyrite dissolution-precipitation mechanism. The rationale is to have available Fe3+ throughout the chalcopyrite leaching process. We tested this method by carrying out various batch experiments using CaCl2, AlCl3, and NaCl industrial brine types compared to freshwater and explored the capacity to leach Cu from chalcopyrite. There is higher Cu recovery during oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in industrial brine with 91 per cent recovery using AlCl3-rich brine, 84 per cent with NaCl-rich brine, and 56 per cent with CaCl2-rich brine as compared to 35 per cent recovery using freshwater. In the absence of Al3+, various forms of iron sulfates, and jarosite are formed, reducing the availability of Fe3+ for chalcopyrite dissolution. The introduction of Al3+ leads to the formation of AlSO4 + species, thus lowering sulfate activity and the tendency for K-jarosite formation.

The difference between a hypothetical and a theoretical approach is considered and the advantages in using a hypothesis is discussed. Virgin horizontal stresses play an important role in stabilising strata which bridge across an excavation, and reduces the tensile stresses which develop in a beam subjected to bending. Simple formulae are deduced for the bridging of a thick massive stratum under such conditions. At shallow depths, tensile failure on the upper side of the beam is the most likely cause of fracture, but below a certain depth this gives place to compressive failure on the underside, with the possible incidence of rock bumps. The presence of strong massive beds delay the onset of subsidence and may restrict the width of the subsidence trough. If the material involved in the caving is strong, this will reduce the final subsidence, especially at shallow depths. The British regulations for the control of aquifers and their dependence on the strain developed at the seabed are discussed. As an alternative, the concept of a disturbance factor is introduced to permit the consider- ation of aquifers at depth, leading to an explanation of the make of water on the first faces to be mined in the Selby Coalfield. 'Elie paper closes with a brief consideration of the different roles played by longwall face supports in the control of readily cavable strata, and the control of strong beds which hold up in the waste.

Converter slag assaying 3.7 per cent Cu is produced by Mount Isa copper smelter at a rate of up to 180 000 tonnes per annum.Priority is given to the processing of ore, however concentrator capacity periodically exceeds that of the mine and the opportunity is taken to treat converter slag. It is processed in batch campaigns, typically through the Copper Concentrator, but the Hilton Concentrator has also been used. Slag and ore are kept as separate as possible, since each has an adverse effect on the flotation performance of the other.

At Pasminco Mining's South concentrator. which was commissioned in 1952. an expansion. modernisation and efficiency improvement program commenced in 1986 with a coarse ore stockpile and grinding circuit expansion. the replacement of small flotation cells and the upgrading of reagent mixing and metering equipment. The program continued with the installation of a TDC 3000 based process control system (1988) and concentrate thickeners (1990). By mid-1991 a further grinding expansion and the installation of zinc flotation feed regrind ball mills and zinc recleaner column cells will be complete. leaving the use of ceramic disc fillers and development of process control strategies as probably the remaining major avenues for improved process efficiency at present.

Large-scale column experiments were undertaken to determine the effect of a step decrease in groundwater pH on metal remediation by bioprecipitation. Metal contaminated groundwater at pH 5.5 was amended with ~1 g/L of ethanol in one column using a polymer mat ethanol delivery system to promote bioprecipitation, while another column was left unamended and used as a control. Sulfate reduction and zinc removal were observed after eight weeks. Zinc removal was observed in the zone of sulfate reduction, indicating precipitation as ZnS, while, copper was removed in the denitrification zone. Once steady state bioprecipitation of zinc had been established, the pH of the metal contaminated influent groundwater was decreased stepwise from 5.5 to 4.25. As a result of the change in pH, a significant increase in copper concentration was observed in both columns. In the ethanol column, the zones of denitrification and copper removal migrated up the column, while both sulfate reduction and zinc removal ceased. Bioprecipitation of metal contaminated groundwater via sulfate reduction was shown to be an effective remediation strategy for zinc removal. However, this in situ biological remediation process was sensitive to changes in groundwater pH.

Ventilation is part of all underground mine operations and is undertaken in order to introduce fresh, cool air to the workings and to remove stale, affected air. It is problematic to obtain efficient and accurate estimates of volume flow and static pressure in the installed operational configuration for the auxiliary axial flow fans.An empirical method was developed to estimate the static pressure and volume flow through a calibrated differential pressure port on axial flow fans. Prior to shipping, each fan is performance tested according to BS 848 (ISO 5801) to establish the fan performance curves. In addition to the standard required parameters captured to fully describe the performance, the differential pressure is measured across the fan rotor to enable correlation with the characteristic fan curve.The method was implemented on a ruggedised tablet PC platform. This compact platform is then used to calculate the volume flow rate from the differential pressure sensor measurement input via a USB port. The result is a real-time measurement of volume flow and operating point of the fan system. This can be used effectively in overall modelling of the mine auxiliary ventilation systems and calculation of system resistance could provide a health indication of the fan and duct system.CITATION:Ratner, G and Viviers, S, 2013. New opportunities for miners are beginning to appear through new discoveries, improved knowledge and access to vast unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf. Recent discoveries of undersea hydrothermal deposits show evidence of high-grade mineralisation, although in many instances the extent of the resource is still unknown. The promise and the difficulties of undersea mining have been evident since attempts were first made to mine manganese nodules in the 1960s. The physical nature of the undersea resource is a key influence on its mining potential; and environmental issues will also become increasingly important. This paper explores these issues and concludes with a description of the immediate to medium term applied research required to develop this industry and the spin off that such research can provide.

The Northern Beaches Storage Project (NBSP) is part of Sydney Water’s SewerFix™ Program to improve the wastewater system and protect public health and the environment. It was built by the SewerFix Wet Weather Alliance (the Alliance), a partnership between Sydney Water, RPS, MWH, Parsons Brinckerhoff and United Group Infrastructure.The project temporarily stores excess wastewater diverted from the Narrabeen Submain during wet weather. The project considered a below-ground storage facility, which involved constructing a deep tunnel from Brookvale to Fairlight, connecting into the Northside Storage Tunnel and a storage tank, which was subsequently adopted and constructed.The storage tank scheme included a pumping station and inlet and outlet pipes installed by microtunnelling. The storage tank site is in the Brookvale industrial area situated in an area of deep marine sediments overlying Hawkesbury Sandstone at about 30?m below ground. Microtunnelling for the inlet pipe was conducted from a 12?m deep jacking shaft. The jacking shaft and 14?m deep pumping station excavations were carried out from within secant pile earth retaining structures adjacent to existing buildings.Construction activities had the potential to cause settlement of the adjacent buildings. During excavation and microtunnelling the water ingress, adjacent groundwater level and settlement of the adjacent buildings were monitored. The monitoring data was assessed against an action plan, which modified construction activities as required to minimise the risk of damage to buildings from settlements caused by lowering of the groundwater table outside the excavations. The secant pile construction, excavation, microtunnelling and pumping station construction proceeded without incident or damage to adjacent buildings.This paper highlights that tunnel/underground options should be considered during options development, describes the original storage tunnel scheme and presents details of the successful microtunnelling and deep shaft construction adopted on the NBSP.CITATION:Taylor, N and Hewitt, P, 2014. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

Magnesite and dolomite are two salt-type minerals. The surface characteristics of these two minerals are almost the same. It is very difficult to remove dolomite from magnesite ores by flotation process. The present study was performed to develop a new collector and a better flotation scheme for magnesite from dolomite. The flotation tests show that there exists a significant difference in flotability between magnesite and dolomite when dodecyl phosphate synthesised with dodecanol, phosphorus oxychloride and other chemicals is used as collector. Sodium silicate was used as the modifier to improve flotation selectivity. It was found that sodium silicate selectively depressed magnesite at pH 4.5 - 7.5. The separation of magnesite from dolomite was achieved in a reverse flotation which resulted in a 76.1 per cent yield of magnesite with a grade of 47.3 per cent at 100 ppm dodecyl phosphate and 75 ppm sodium silicate. The flotation mechanism was investigated by characterising surface electrical properties and measuring the adsorption density of the reagents on magnesite and dolomite.
