In a technologically oriented industry, it is important to understand and apply technology very consciously to create competitive advantage. Technology is not an activity which is simply restricted to CSIRO or the research and technology department. Technology improvement is a part of everyone's role. It is a way of life - the technology facet of continuous improvement. For this reason, The AusIMM has organised this Travelling Technology Forum - a series of presentations about automation in mining. To make the message more accessible, The AusIMM had originally planned to take the Forum to four regional mining centres: Mackay/Townsville, Singleton, Burnie and Kalgoorlie, but only one seminar was held, ie at Singleton in March 1997. Seminars at other locations were cancelled because of insufficient registrants. The presentation by Andrew Logan of BHP Cannington was not available for the Singleton forum. The aims of the forum were: ò to heighten awareness of the key technologies and their impact in the minerals industry in the medium term; ò to foster creative thinking; ò to encourage people to broaden their technical and commercial skills and develop individual networks and linkages based on an interest in these key technologies; ò to share information on the application of these technologies in the industry; ò to promote an enhanced appreciation of the need for an innovative culture; and ò to encourage staff to consider post graduate courses in technology management. The AusIMM wanted to not only raise awareness about `automation in mining' issues, but also to get technology in a more general sense back onto `centre stage'. The Forum was generously supported by CSIRO, Western Mining Corporation Ltd, BHP Coal Ltd, Aberfoyle Limited, Goldfields Ltd, Novacoal Australia Pty Ltd, Pasminco Ltd, and RGC Limited. The program was endorsed by the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). Copies of the full papers are available from the authors, see `References'.

Tin mineralisation occurs at Renison Bell, near Zeehan in Tasmania, as a group of cassiterite-bearing massive pyrrhotite bodies in Cambrian sedimentary rocks. Mineralising fluids from the underlying Pine Hill Granite have replaced carbonate rocks with massive sulphides and cassiterite. The discrete blocks of massive pyrrhotite have high density and high magnetic susceptibility contrasts with the comparatively barren country rock. They are strongly remanently magnetised and are excellent geophysical targets. A detailed geophysical model of the mine was created from a database comprising 1:2500 scale geological mapping and geological logs of approximately 4000 drill-cores. The model comprises 93 parallel cross-sections, each 1.5 km long, spaced 20 m apart. Each cross-section is comprised of up to 150 polygons which represent all known individual rock types and orebodies. The magnetic response of the model was computed and the residual between the model and the observed response, measured by a low-level helicopter magnetic survey, revealed several anomalies unaccounted for by the model. Drill testing of these anomalies led to the discovery of several hitherto unknown massive sulphide occurrences. Surface gravity data of the mine and surrounding district were enhanced by applying digital terrain corrections. The corrected Bouguer anomaly revealed a hitherto unknown positive anomaly associated with the ore zones of the Renison mine. The gravity anomaly of the model was also computed. Unfortunately, the limited resolution of the observed data prevented the delineation of ore targets. The terrain-corrected Bouguer gravity data were also used to model the shape of the underlying non-magnetic Pine Hill Granite. A computer inversion method was implemented to build a 3D block model of the granite. Results agreed with previous conventional 3D modelling techniques but yielded improved resolution of the granite form. The project involved development of new computer software to build and edit the large and complex 3D geophysical model of the mine and to compute the model's magnetic and gravity responses. Software was also developed to build and compute the gravity response of a 3D block model of the underlying granite.

Today tunnel segment liners are sealed with corner-vulcanised gaskets made of extruded elastomeric compression profiles. The profile geometries and the elastomeric materials have been further developed in course of time to meet the steadily increasing water-proofing requirements. After 40 years of using such compression gaskets, a wide range of proven standard profile geometries and well-known brands can be found on the market. Even so, there is still potential for further developments and improvement, not only with regard to the water-proofing performance. Permanently increasing cost pressure in the segment production plants demands further developments and new solutions with regard to application techniques. The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. Our studies emphasize the importance of source peridotite ranging from 'fertile lherzolite' (i.e. compositions with 3-4% CaO, A12O3, 0.3-0.5% Na2O) to refractory harzburgite (

The foam behaviour of low molecular weight polypropylene glycols (PPG) was investigated as a function of concentration and molecular weight (190 - 2000 g mol-1). For each polypropylene glycol, foam stability increases with concentration and passes through a maximum, beyond which foamability is suppressed as the solubility limit of the glycol is exceeded and droplets of glycol form. Light scattering data as well as static and dynamic surface tension results provide the key information leading to these interpretations. A maximum in foamability was observed for the PPG molecules with increasing molecular weight (caused by a change in molecular conformation at the interface). This suppresses the Marangoni effect and leads to a decrease in foam stability.

I stand here as a financial advisor who has been particularly close to the whole concept of reporting, independence and all the issues that are brought together in Release 149. However, I was asked to introduce this session by dealing with matters of Prospectuses, Part B's, 3J3's, 12G's and other requirements to report. Now I find it very interesting that one of the keynote issues is whether or not one should have a panel from which one chooses the so-called expert, and this is to deal with the question of independence.

This contribution by. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy has three main thrusts. First, an Institute (and industry) view on academia and the need for more entrepreneurship at top academic levels, second the need to lift our technological game, and third, professionalism and the perceived role of mineral industry education. While I will deal with each of these separately they are of course inter- related and can be brought together under the frequently used, but insufficiently practised title, "communications". First then, The Institute and industry view of academia. There are some academics in the audience and I imagine they may wish to reply to my remarks with an academic view of industry. That is not unreasonable. Like all human institutions, academic institutions vary in quality and characteristics. Some are successful and some less so. Some historically are well renowned. Others that were once successful schools have declined. Lesser known schools have grown into prominence. What is it that sets apart 'good' highly regarded schools from those that are not so well regarded? It comes down to one main ingredient - "leadership". The strong mining schools in the past 100 years have been strong because they have had outstanding and clearly identified leaders. Strong clearly identified leadership has always had rapport with, and the support of the industry. The two go hand- in-hand, each nourishing and supporting the Other.

Many coal mine operators have responded to economic pressures by massive investment in machinery to reduce unit costs. To sustain the increased production which must justify the expenditure it is essential to know the resource in great detail months or even years in advance of its extraction. The required detail includes variations in composition and any lateral disruptions to the seam which night affect production. As Wilson (1985) has pointed out, a day's production loss can mean half a million dollars income forgone, and an unexpected major fault can mean a shutdown of weeks. Traditionally, seams were probed by surface drilling on (typically) 250 or 500m centres, and by horizontal drilling from sithin'the seam. Core was analysed chemically. The new generation machinery cannot tolerate the risk attendant on such widely spaced sampling, but the costs of much closer sampling rapidly become prohibitive.

In recent years a number of explosive blends including ANFO, emulsion and watergel products have been used in a variety of ground types and applications. These `standard' explosives' technologies are not new, but out of the uses and applications, have sprung a new generation of tailored explosives that match the ground type and the operating environment. This is in stark contrast to the norm, where various patterns and loading configurations have traditionally been designed to accommodate the explosive. This paper discusses these tailored explosives and the explosives' technology behind why they work. Active tailoring of explosive formulations can save mining dollars while essentially leaving the explosive price unchanged. Tailoring explosives may lead to increased rock breakage, heave, digging rates; lower digging maintenance costs and in some cases replacing earth moving machinery altogether. Tailored explosives may have other benefits such as reduced over pressure compared with standard alternatives. The tailoring of explosive performance generally involves three major methods (other than changing the bulk density and sensitivity): (i) replacing fast burning reactants with slower burning reactants or vice versa; or (ii) leaving the explosive intact and diluting the entire explosive with slow burning or `inert' material; or (iii) changing the concentration of the fuel/oxidiser mix. When tailoring explosives for particular applications, authorising, testing, costing, manufacturing, and delivery systems must also be taken into account.

Sparse geochronological data have been combined with data on felsic suites and depositional facies of rocks to provide an overview of the development of the Arunta Block. The study provides a basis for construction of a map showing the distribution of granites and associated felsic extrusive rocks in the Anmta Block. The tectonic evolution can be subdivided into a series of significant time intervals. Only in the initial stage, to about 1880 Ma, was there any subduction-related magmatism. All later felsic magmas were crustal-derived melts. The early, pre-1880 Ma arc-related units in the SE contain small showings of Cu, probably including the small Cu deposit in the Casey Bore Inlier at the edge of the Simpson Desert. The most significant time-interval for formation of mineral deposits was 1820-1760 Ma, when volcanogenic Cu-Pb-Zn deposits formed in the Strangways Metamorphic Complex and also in the Jervois district. SustainabilityÆs imperative of economic development in tandem with social advancement and environmental protection is widely accepted, but much debate remains about the practical implications for the minerals processing technologies and practices for the future. Experience in other industry sectors however suggests that sustainability can be a value-adding framework for innovation in processing technologies, business models and management systems. This position paper explores how sustainability can drive innovation in minerals processing, by reviewing pertinent ideas and experiences gained in non-minerals sectors. Sustainable innovations can generally be broadly ranked from incremental to transformative, with each category having its own typical improvement potential, timescale and technological and operational challenges. This leads to a æmud mapÆ for sustainable innovation in minerals processing with three distinct tracks: eco-efficient operations; sustainable plant design and sustainable processing. Competing models for the sustainable innovation process through either forecasting or back-casting, have in common the strong reliance on vision, perspective and competency, which in turn highlights the importance of sustainability frameworks. Such sustainability frameworks provide normative goals and option elicitation prompts to assist with the analysis of current processes and scoping of more sustainable alternatives. A comparative analysis of five prominent environmental sustainability frameworks revealed three cross cutting sustainability themes that challenge current resource processing technologies and practices. These are: fate of materials (zero dissipation of materials); compatibility of materials and processes; and materials intensity of industrial products and processes. Although the sustainability concepts presented in this paper have not been extensively road tested in the minerals processing industry, there is ample evidence that recent initiatives in the Australian resource sector illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework. It is therefore argued that more in-depth assessment of sustainable innovation concepts would be a valuable contribution to the sustainable resource processing theory and practice.

Epicentres of recent shallow earthquakes in the region (3-12¦S, 126-150`E) were plotted to identify the various plate boundaries in the region, in particular the southernmost one marking the northern edge of the Australian plate. New and published fault plane solutions were examined to determine the style of faulting and state of stress along the Australian plate boundary. From east to west the boundary is first a subduction zone along the Solomon Islands, then a spreading centre across the Solomon Sea, a zone of compression and left lateral strike slip along the Papua Peninsula, almost pure thrusting across the centre of New Guinea and lastly left lateral strike silo through Irian Taya to the outer Banda Arc. The principal stress is very consistent, trending NW to NNW in a near horizontal plane, from the triple junction of the Pacific, Solomon Sea and Australian plates in the east to the Banda Sea in the west. Only along southern Solomon Sea plate margin which is a divergent boundary, is the stress different in type and direction.

The requirements for the controllability of metallurgical processes are increasingly becoming the focus of both industry and research. Advances in this field of research not only impact the stability of processes but often also influence the quality of the final product. One important way to examine processes in-depth, and thus show potential for improvement, is to describe them using physicsdriven models. In metallurgy, thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions of interactions between individual components of a system are often used to describe and analyse important metallurgical phenomena across the entire process. However, for the creation of physics-based models, boundary conditions and process variables must be implemented to enable a description that is as realistic as possible. The collection and generalisation of boundary conditions and process variables is, therefore, an important step towards functional models. The focus of this study is the determination of mass transfer coefficients between all components in a steel/slag/refractory system. For this purpose, experimental and theoretical methods are applied. Laboratory scale experiments are carried out in an induction furnace, and the mass transfer coefficients of the defined steel/slag/refractory system are calculated from changes in the chemical composition of the various components. Additionally, a calculation of the mass transfer coefficients based on dimensionless quantities is carried out. By comparing the values of the mass transfer coefficients determined theoretically and those determined experimentally in the trials, the suitability of the calculation is examined. The collection of mass transfer coefficients provides essential findings for future kinetic descriptions of inclusion modification based on the effective equilibrium reaction zone (EERZ) approach.

We can look at the water treatment and management strategies at some recently commissioned mines and minerals processing sites to see the likely future of water in mining. The future of water in mining will be based on a holistic approach to understanding the site water balance, appropriate treatment, reuse where possible, and environmentally managed discharge where required. This paper describes advanced and innovative water treatment and reuse processes as used by mines and mineral processing operations from around the world. Underground mining can often require dewatering to prevent groundwater seeping into and flooding the mine workings. Mining and processing often accumulates wastewaters in a tailings dam. The mine water can contain contaminants such as dissolved salts, iron, arsenic, manganese, heavy metals and acidic and odorous sulfates. On-site reuse, environmental discharge requirements, as well as community needs for water, drive mine operators to consider the most appropriate water treatment process. Mining water treatment for the future is described using case studies of innovative processes. The case studies include treatment of mine dewatering water for beneficial application from Australian mines, Ballarat Goldfields and Bendigo mining, treatment of produced water from oil and gas projects, and treatment for arsenic removal of tailings water from mining and processing at Goldcorp mines in Canada. Advanced and innovative processes including membrane filtration, reverse osmosis at extreme conditions, advanced biological treatment and water management are all part of these case studies. This paper uses real case studies of advanced and innovative mine water treatment processes to explain and examine the technology and the reasons for designing specific processes. The focus is on innovative processes that may be more widely used in future mining û where the water is used for sustainable environmental discharge or treatment to a quality that can be beneficially used by the mine or the local community.

Ore-bearing minerals that are located along microfractures are always susceptible to loss during the breakage and sampling of the material. Further losses occur with on-site sample preparation and splitting prior to laboratory analysis. In these cases solid whole rock channel or core samples should be handled with due care to ensure all fines and loose particles are collected and included in the sample for total chemical analysis.Similarly open hole and reverse circulation drill methods are not usable in areas containing old mine workings, heavily fractured ground or highly degraded/oxidised mineral assemblages. Nor are these methods usable to assess a bulk mineable target where the enriched zones were peripheral to or between old mine cavities.

The project management and construction plans adopted by Davy McKee for the Cooper Basin Liquids Project resulted in a project notable for the Relatively short duration from initiation of the design through to liquids production. Two locations were involved, one at Moomba in the far northeast of South Australia some 800 km from Adelaide, and the other at Port Bonython some 40 km from Whyalla. Total expenditure by the owners at the two sites was in excess of $600 million. Matters covered include organisation, transport, construction, industrial relations, project services and commissioning.

The effect of operating parameters of a shaking table on the separation of mixed quartz-magnetite artificial feed has been experimentally investigated by use of laboratory-scale shaking table. Based on a great number of experimental data collected, the multi-variate non-linear model of shaking table has been developed. The model allows for the calculation of the product grade and recovery. A computer model has been programmed, for inclusion in a software package for the simulation and optimisation of shaking table if the feed characteristics and the concentrate grade are given.
