To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

A study has been made of the geochemistry of the Ronneburg mine district as input to the overall management strategy for the rehabilitation of the mine site. The study drew on the geological data and information store developed over the 40 years of mineral exploration and mining at Ronneburg, and on chemical data from the literature which described the chemical processes of weathering, oxidation, dissolution and precipitation of minerals. The geochemical processes were divided into three groups based on their rate of reaction. Fast processes were assumed to proceed to equilibrium and were modelled using equilibrium chemistry equations; slow processes were assumed to be proceeding at a quasi-steady state rate and were modelled using chemical rate equations; very slow processes were assumed to have no role in describing the geochemistry for rehabilitation purposes.

I offer some comments which might complement the valuable recent paper by De Angelis et al (1987), on the newly discovered nickel-copper deposit at Radio Hill.The authors have accepted subdivisions and correlations by Hickman (1977, 1983) although they are disputed (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1975; Horwitz, 1979; Horwitz and Guj, 1986).Also, in my opinion, more plausible correlations of the Sholl Belt with Whim Creek Belt have been shown, but not discussed, in Hudson and Horwitz (1986, Figure 1). Our suggested correlations and subdivisions have appeared in publications and reports which are not readily available, but it is gratifying to note that many of the observations and conclusions of De Angelis et al are consistent with our conclusions of the Whim Creek Belt.The units of the Sholl Belt (of Hickman, 1983), between the Sholl Fault (Shear Zone) and the overlying Mt Bruce Supergroup to the south, equate well with units of the Whim Creek Belt. A basalt, characterised by an abundance of vesicles and similar in many ways to the Wararnbi Basalt of Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester (I975), is well developed at the base of the succession, particularly in the southern part of the area (Figure 1). It is overlain by acid tuffs (locally metamorphosed, such as at Whundoo Mine) and associated acid and mafic lavas, similar to those of the Mons Cupri area. The mafics in the succession are marked by the absence of the numerous cherty sedimentary intercalations, such as the Marble Bar Chert, which occur in the Warrawoona Group; and they also lack the intense chertification that is prevalent in all parts of the proven areas of Warrawoona Group rocks.The Whim Creek Group is overlain, locally unconformably (two to three km east of Mount Negri), by the Negri Volcanics which include here the Louden Volcanics (unit Abu of Hickman, 1977), (Horwitz, 1979). The negri volcanics are an alternating sequence of variolitic and quench textured lavas not dissimilar to the highest units of the Sholl Belt (Figure 1). They range from high-Mg basalt to tholeitic andesites (Glikson et al, 1986, pp 79 and 84). The whole succession of the Sholl Belt is estimated to be of the order of four km in thickness, more consistent with the two km thick (Horwitz, 1979, Figure 1) Whim Creek area sequence than with the much thicker Warrawoona Group sequences. The Whim Creek Group (including the Negri Volcanics) is considered to be a widespread grouping (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1976; Horwitz, 1979; Horwitz and Guj, 1986) which is prevalent in the northern part of the Pilbara Craton. It is considered by these authors to include the Mallina Formation turbidites of the trough area of Ryan (1965). One component, the Mons Cupri Volcanic, is about 2.95 Ga (Richards and Blockley, 1984). Between the Sholl Fault and Egina, the Whim Creek Group is intruded by large ultrarnafic to granophyric ills of the Millindinna Complex (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1975), dated at 2.860 ± 002 Ga by Gulson and Korsh (1983) near the Sherlock River (south side of Caines Well Granite area). The Millindinna Complex has been equated to the same magmatic episode as the layered complexes of the Sholl Belt by Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester (1975, p 20).

Lead residue from the Zinc Leach Plant at Pasminco's Port Pirie Lead Smelter was previously filtered on a vacuum drum filter and further dried in a gas fired rotary kiln prior to stockpiling and transport to the Sinter Plant. This process involved several materials handling stages, recycled significant amounts of zinc and often resulted in poor environmental conditions. These problems have been overcome by pumping the thickened leach residue approximately 450m to the Sinter Plant where it is filtered in a Larox Automatic Pressure Filter. The filter cake is discharged onto a conveyor belt, held in a storage hopper and then fed directly to the main sinter plant feed stream. Filtrate is returned to the process for additional zinc recovery. The laboratory and pilot plant filtration results are briefly discussed and compared with the operating plant data. The filter installation and ancillaries are described in detail along with the commissioning, operating and maintenance experience over the past 4 years. This installation has overcome the environmental and materials handling problems and resulted in annual savings of approximately $1 million.

Sixty years after its inception, after an alternation of periods of admiration and rejection by the industry, Sampling Theory can now be seen as going through its golden age. A brief history of its successive transformations and progresses achieved by its author, Pierre Gy, and his followers, reveals the theoretical as well as practical difficulties that had to be vanquished to reach this point. Its current level of acceptance and corresponding trends are discussed and illustrated, with an insight on its increasing real role in the industry and future prospects for its further development.

The use of gravity concentration is, and has always been, the conventional primary method for gold recovery from alluvial deposits. The development of high capacity cone concentrators and metallurgically efficient wash-waterless spiral separators has had some impact in the technology for alluvial gold processing, but perhaps more significantly has led to the relatively recent use of this gravity concentration technology in grinding circuits of hard rock ore for "coarse" gold removal and for scavenging gold locked in sulphides from cyanidation tailings streams.Gravity concentration systems are relatively low-cost, non-polluting and energy efficient; and their judicial use in gold treatment plants can significantly reduce overall capital and operating costs.The application of modern gravity concentration technology to hard-rock and alluvial gold ore treatment is discussed. Flowsheets and test and operating data from a number of gold processing operations incorporating gravity concentration treatment are presented.

To improve the understanding of the reactions and mechanisms occurring during the leaching of sulfide ores at high temperatures a range of advanced characterisation and sensing tools have been combined to provide a sophisticated and powerful methodology to examine sulfide leaching systems. These include advanced electrochemical methods, surface chemistry and materials characterisation techniques such as synchrotron X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM), and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), together with new robust solid state chemical sensors for in situ real time monitoring of key aqueous chemical parameters. The methodology was employed to investigate various sulfide mineral leaching processes. For example, oxidation of arsenopyrite at elevated temperature involves complicated multiple reactions and the process is strongly influenced by the solution conditions, component speciation and mineralogy. The methodology was used to study this system both ex situ and in situ to gain a detailed understanding of the complex chemical reaction mechanisms operating. These mechanisms are discussed in terms of the observed leaching efficiency. The application of this methodology enables complex sulfide leaching systems to be understood more fully such that process efficiency can be improved.

The characterisation of the surface area and porosity of opals derived from Tintenbar, a volcanic environment, and Lightning Ridge, a sedimentary environment, using nitrogen gas adsorption at -196¦C is reported. Both opal types were found to have relatively low surface areas and displayed little porosity. The low surface areas observed is indicative of the ability of silica to infill voids and interstices. Thermogravimetric analysis of the samples before and after degassing was carried out to determine the amount of water removed by the degassing process. Negligible difference was found in the water content before and after degassing in the case of the Lightning Ridge sedimentary opal, while the Tintenbar volcanic opal was found to have lost more that 60 per cent of its water during the degassing process. These differences were ascribed to the differences in the silica structure of the opals with the Lightning Ridge opal having a denser cage structure, which traps the molecular water, while a more open structure is postulated for the Tintenbar opal, allowing the water to be relatively easily removed.

In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.

The Mako domain comprises the Mako lodes at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia. This domain was initially bulk or æbucketÆ domained for the open pit resource in 2000, due to complexity in defining the lodes as a result of low drill density. Negative ore tonnage and positive grade and ounce reconciliations were experienced during mining of the domain in the mega-pit, though only small volumes of the domain were mined. Significant amounts of exploration and underground grade control drilling has been completed since the initial bulk domain interpretation and greater geological understanding of the mineralisation controls and geology of the lodes now exists. Mako provides approximately 50 per cent of the ore tonnes and ounces for the North Wall Cut-back, the latest open pit phase of mining at Sunrise Dam. The importance of Mako to mill supply and life-of-mine planning, as well as past reconciliation performance necessitated a reinterpretation of the domain to increase confidence for mining. Historic exploration drilling, underground grade control drilling and detailed pit-wall mapping were used to build mineralised subdomains within the confines of the original domain. These reflect more closely the spatial extents and geological controls on the mineralisation. A new resource model using the multiple indicator kriging (MIK) technique was generated using the new domains. It resulted in a decrease in tonnes and ounces but increase in grade for the sum total of the new domains compared to the old æbucketÆ domain. This is attributed to the increased selectivity and structural constraints imposed by the new domains. A retrospective comparison of the Mako grade control from the mega-pit versus the new resource model was conducted, which æreconciledÆ 103 per cent tonnes, 106 per cent grade and 110 per cent ounces. This has provided confidence that the new model is a better estimate of the lodes. Qualitatively, the new model is a better representation of the geology and extent of the mineralised structures with significant areas of change identifiable. Grade-tonnage plots comparing the 2006 and 2008 models show that most tonnes have been shed from the low-grade û subeconomic grade cut-offs. This is mostly attributable to the volume reduction of æoreÆ in the 2008 model compared to the 2006 model, where the true mineralised zones are captured by the new domains. The reinterpretation and remodelling of Mako is an example of an evolved domain model and shows that mineralised zones need to be differentiated adhering to the geology and geological controls on mineralisation, which are understood largely due to increased drilling density coupled with mapping.

The economic future of the Palmer Goldfield lies with both the gold mining and the tourist industries. An equitable solution to the competition between the two involves putting a dollar value on the historical evidence there for our Australian heritage.On 23 October 1986 the Queensland Government gazetted the Palmer River Reserves R16 of 16 200 hectares, in recognition of the competing land uses emerging in the region. The intention is that historically significant gold mining sites and relics will be preserved in situ with provision for continued gold exploration and mining.This paper explores and explains the administrative process of achieving a set of Management Guidelines for Rl6 within the Queensland political milieu. The result of that process is the achievement of some of the highest preservation standards in Australia, prohibiting surface disturbance of defined Category 1 sites, and no mining proposal has yet been refused approval.The Palmer Goldfield R16 experience is a major step in achieving a co-ordinated approach to both current mining and preservation of Queensland's mining heritage.

Two major types of economic secondary iron ores occur in the banded iron formation (BIF)-rich Hamersley Province of the Pilbara, Western Australia:dominant BIF-hosted bedded iron deposits (BID)detrital ore deposits (DID sensu lato), which are mainly hosted in the three province-wide Cenozoic sequences that include coeval non-ore sediments and comprise:a. the major Miocene, fluvial channel iron deposits (CID)b. the lesser Eocene and Pliocene detrital iron deposits (DID sensu stricto).Striking differences exist between the massive CID resources and the much smaller underlying and overlying DID. CID are essentially riverine alluvial ooidal rocks with abundant small fossil wood fragments and variable iron peloids, but with only extremely rare recognisable lithic remnants. The original matrix is typically ramifying layered goethite. Eocene DID are mainly alluvial with minor pisoids, whereas Pliocene–Quaternary DID are dominantly coarse colluvial gravels, both derived from and largely retaining the original textures of BID, hard cap or variably ferruginised surface BIF. The colluvial DID matrix is typically ferroan-aluminous soil, resulting in canga where replaced by goethite, which may be dehydrated to hematite by exposure. The Cenozoic deposits occur in two dominant geomorphological environments: the southern Marra Mamba to Brockman Iron Formation strike valleys containing all three Cenozoic sequences and the much later northern Brockman Iron Formation plateau valleys that include only the Miocene and Pliocene sequences. The Cenozoic detritals formed in different climatic regimes, with an extended dry period forming a prominent province-wide dehydrated carapace on the Eocene DID. The Miocene ‘optimum’ followed with its thick scrub-covered deep regolith that produced the fossil wood-rich CID and was succeeded by the arid cool period of the Oakover limestone/calcrete. A major renewal of exposure and erosion in the Pliocene resulted in the extensive iron gravels of the Pliocene–Quaternary.CITATION:Morris, R C, 2015. At the northern margin of New Guinea there is a fundamental problem related to the relative timing of arc- continent collision(s) represented in the Papuan Fold-Belt (PFB) and backarc spreading in the Caroline basins. New fission track dates from basement and sediments within major anticlines of the PFB indicate that uplift occurred at 4.0 ¦ 0.5 Ma. The timing is consistent with the fold and thrust shortening (more than 100 km) of the PFB which occurred in the Late Miocene/Early Pliocene as evidenced by the deformed Miocene carbonates and Pliocene molasse deposits. However, in northern Papua New Guinea, earlier work has suggested that ophiolite emplacement and associated metamorphism occurred in the late Oligocene/early Miocene.The evidence suggests that the late Miocene/early Pliocene deformation was of considerably greater magnitude than the earlier obduction event. The Caroline Plate lying north of New Guinea has been interpreted as a backarc basin which commenced spreading in the Eocene and ceased spreading in the Late Oligocene (about 28 Ma). The remnant arc presently docked to New Guinea was active in the Eocene and Oligocene and is believed to be the arc related to the formation of the Caroline Plate. The cessation of spreading of the Caroline Plate has previously been interpreted to be due to arc continent collision during the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene, but such a collision is now known not to have occurred. In the Cretaceous and Palaeocene subduction was to the south beneath New Guinea, but "flipped" in the Eocene to give a north-dipping subduction zone far to the north of New Guinea, driving Caroline Plate backarc extension. This backarc basin reached a limiting size at about 28 Ma resulting in the end of subduction. With the continued northward movement of Australia, Mesozoic oceanic crust was obducted southward onto the New Guinea margin in the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene. In the Miocene south-dipping subduction beneath New Guinea commenced until the now extinct Caroline Plate arc collided with New Guinea in the Early Pliocene, causing extensive regional compression and sinistral strike-slip faulting. This new tectonic framework suggests that backarc basins reach a limiting ridge-trench distance of 1000-1500 knm, beyond which "subduction-pull" cannot drive further spreading so subduction and spreading are terminated.

Several packages for the estimation of porphyry type deposits exist and produce acceptable results. Recently, however, the need for really trying to obtain maximum information from drill holes has prompted the generation of geostatistical solutions to the problem of reserve calculation. It will be shown that an understanding of a few key points is necessary in order for these solutions (variogram analysis and kriging) to he really ptimal. The most important new fact to be ecognized in open pit ore reserve estimation is that block models do not give an accurate rediction of ore tonnage when a cut-off is pplied but often yield an overestimation of p to 25%. When checked against extensive roduction records, geostatistical methods provide a practical solution to this problem. t now seems that the model used here gives he best possible results. Inasmuch as all arge deposits present very similar geostatis- ical characteristics only a few days of work re necessary to produce a complete inventory f these. The techniques used will be demon- trated using examples from five deposits and pecial emphasis will be given to the accurate rediction of tonnages of ore and waste using he new "transfer function" technique of G.

The Kyaukpahto gold deposit is located at latitude 23¦ 47Æ 55" N and longitude 95¦ 56Æ 35" E in the Kawlin-Wuntho district, Sagaing Division, Myanmar. Gold mineralisation is hosted in sandstone of the Male Formation (Eocene) and occurs as stockworks and disseminations. The high-grade gold mineralisation is locally concentrated in a breccia zone. The gold deposit is closely associated with a NNE-SSW trending fracture system that forms tensional open fractures. These tensional zones are thought to be directly related to the Sagiang transfer fault system that experienced several hundred kilometres of northward dextral movement during the post-Upper Miocene. Major sulfide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite with minor galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Gold mineralisation is associated with intense silicification, sericitisation and argillic alteration. Primary Type I fluid inclusions in the quartz from the mineralised zone are 5 to 15 ¦m across and yield homogenisation temperatures of 239¦ - 310¦C and salinities of 1.2 - 10.9 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates the presence of CO2 and CH4 in Type II fluid inclusions. Sulfur isotope analysis of disseminated pyrite in the ore zone by the laser ablation method indicates d34S values from -5.48ë to +5.53ë. The geology, alteration, ore mineralogy, fluid inclusion microthermometry and sulfur isotope data of the Kyaukpahto deposit are consistent with an epithermal ore deposit model for the deposit. However, the presence of CO2-liquid bearing fluids and the detectable CH4 in the gaseous phase of the fluid inclusions conflict with a typical epithermal origin for the Kyaukpahto deposit. The host siltstone and mudstone sequence, trace element geochemistry, and the disseminated nature of sulfide and gold mineralisation are also common characteristics of a sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposit, and these features may indicate a Carlin-like affinity. One of the most frequently asked questions at the feasibility study stage of a project is, æhow big can one go?Æ This important question effects costing and efficiency of metallurgical equipment, the real estate required and the operating plant strategy.The presentation covers both engineering and process considerations and explains the limits that exist today and explores future trends.The paper is specific about large slurry application usually found in gold applications; however, it could apply to silver and uranium or other dense media leach duties.Agitator drive sizes are examined as well as process risks associated with large tank agitation. New technology has increased the maximum tank size and designers are now experienced in tank volumes in excess of 5000 m3. Tanks of 6000 m3 have been agitated and 10 000 m3 tanks are within present engineering know-how and scale-up.Fabrication techniques for shaft and impeller designs exceed the existing standards and new specifications will be needed to cover large mixer design. The paper covers certain aspects of mechanical design and proposes alternative standards that are more appropriate. Process considerations such as fluid natural frequency as well as typical superficial velocities for efficient operations are examined. Scale-up techniques based on existing and new technology are also examined to ensure a successful installation.The presentation therefore covers the majority of large mixer design questions that are frequently asked.

Mineral sand orebodies are typically mined for their TiO2 content. Increasingly over the past 30 years, the major mineral focus has shifted from natural rutile to ilmenite and an acceptance that the latter generally needs some form of upgrading for economic conversion into TiO2 pigment. This upgrading obviously has a cost, and in conjunction with diminishing mineable feed grades, results in higher cost TiO2 units for chloride route Pigment Plant feedstocks. The net cost of feedstock can be significantly influenced by the recovery and sale of accessory minerals and by-products from the processing chain to the extent that some producers have the potential to achieve a zero net cost. Whilst slagging plants typically reduce net cost from rutile, zircon and pig iron revenues, operations supporting Becher type synthetic rutile operations have been limited to revenues from rutile and zircon only. A range of alumino silicate minerals show industrial potential, as does activated carbon, iron oxide and gypsum, by-products of the synthetic rutile process. Tiwest is a good example of a company maximising revenue from the accessory minerals as well as from by-products of the synthetic rutile process.

DuPont is a chemical and energy multi-national of approximately 90,000 employees. Often regarded as the world leader in injury reduction and process safety management, DuPont operate 140 manufacturing sites around the globe. Conoco is a wholly owed subsidiary of DuPont which is involved in oil, gas and coal exploration.   Throughout this paper I will discuss DuPont statistics, developing a safety culture and training process as well as discussing possible short comings in the New Zealand safety focus. I will conclude with my recommended improvements and issues for New Zealand companies to focus on.   It is very difficult to compare DuPont and New Zealand statistics through lack of compatibility in recording methods and my ability to interpret ACC's Injury Statistics. However through considering DuPont's statistics, and comparing them to your own companies or departments, you will agree they are indeed impressive. I hope that by discussing DuPont's safety philosophy, and possible shortfalls within New Zealand Legislation many of you will find ideas and inspiration which will help you to further reduce your own injury rates.

Mining companies are striving to achieve new levels of operational maturity and drive process improvement across the organisation in the face of unprecedented demand and limited supply of experienced human resources. Advanced analytics techniques can help overcome these fundamental challenges by applying data techniques not previously applied in mining. Today, decisions are usually locally optimised but do not achieve optimum capability for the value chain. Although more information is collected then ever before, it is difficult to link many sources of data together in the same place in real-time, for example plant history, maintenance, mine planning, logistics and engineering data. Consequently complex analysis of data is time consuming and requires specialist skills and knowledge, and is often neglected in the decision-making process. In the future, analytics will close the loop between analysing data and taking action. Analytics will become embedded in the business and routinely applied to improve decision making across the organisation, from senior management to operations and maintenance workers, but will not require specialist skills or be time consuming to analyse data. As analytics becomes embedded in the business process, decisions are supported by data (not on gut feel), and critically, data from many sources are integrated in real-time to improve the quality of decisions. Ultimately, predictive tools will help suggest, or even in some cases automate, courses of action. The main opportunities for analytics exist where the enterprise requires supporting technology to enable it to continue to evolve to higher level of maturity. This will be in the areas of asset management, rapid reconciliation and adaptive planning, and the inbound and outbound supply chains. Advanced analytics are also a key enabler for increasing the effectiveness and realising the true value of Remote Operations Centres to safely and efficiently support operations in remote locations with smaller workforces.

An ocean outfall is currently under construction in Christchurch, New Zealand to transfer treated wastewater from the existing treatment ponds at the city wastewater treatment plant to diffusers located 3 km offshore. The New Zealand $85 million project comprises a new pump station and 5 km of 1800 mm diameter pipeline with a design capacity of 6.0 cumecs. The pipeline comprises 2.3 km of concrete pipe installed by microtunnelling and 2.7 km of polyethene marine pipe installed by dredge and lay. This paper describes the consent process, key environmental and community constraints, the tender process, risk provisions included in the contract, the type of contract, partnering provisions, geotechnical design issues and the pipejacking construction activities and issues.
