The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

For nearly two decades water scientists have been debating the need to use appropriate models for the questions being asked and the data available. This paper puts forward a rationale for a hierarchical framework for water balance modelling as it applies to mine sites. The hierarchy is based on the complexity of models and their data requirements. Scientific models are the most complex and require the most data; next is engineering models, then systems models and the simplest representations are given by conceptual models. A position is put forward that systems models have a range of uses that the others do not provide. A systems model, called SiteMiser, is described and its calibration illustrated. The model is applied to seven coal mines from the Northern Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Currently, there is little relationship between total water use and coal production. This relationship is not any stronger when fresh (raw) water is compared to reused water. Leading practice water use levels are simulated for all sites. The simulation results demonstrate that there is considerable opportunity to reduce water consumption and, in particular, to import less fresh (raw) water to the sites.

The valuation of early-stage exploration projects requires a valuer to take into account a large number of uncertain value drivers, the interplay among which may be non-linear. This paper examines some of the key value drivers including geology, target metrics, project area and maturity, the market and the psychology behind the decision-making process. The commonly accepted valuation methods and their underlying logic are outlined, including a view on why they evolved, what value drivers they attempt to address and their potential shortcomings. These methods include the multiple of exploration expenditure, geoscience rating, expected values and market based methods. The potential future valuation methods of replacement values and neural networks are also introduced along with how to minimise heuristic bias and error within the market-based approach.CITATION:Bell, J A and Guj, P, 2012. In presenting this paper the author has in view a twofold purpose. In the first place, it is intended to set forth for the benefit of practical mining men some account of the principles underlying the design of tungsten carbide rock bits in the hope that a knowledge of these principles will assist in the successful application of the bits to mine and quarry drilling. Secondly, by evoking discussion, and even controversy, it is hoped that manufacturers and users of these rock bits will be encouraged to contribute to the general knowledge of a subject which to date has been rather lacking in published literature. The author well appreciates that many of the conclusions drawn in this paper are highly controversial, but if the only result is to call forth contradictory testimony from other workers in this field, at least one of his purposes will have been achieved.An attempt will first be made to set forth and examine those characteristics which go to make up an efficient rock bit, and the main factors affecting these characteristics will be discussed. In a paper of this general nature, consideration of any particular aspect must necessarily be rather brief, and there is little opportunity for detailed presentation of test procedures and data. Within the past decade, incidents of mining–community conflicts have grown dramatically and represent one aspect of a phenomenon known as social risk. Research published in 2014 indicates that a lack of social acceptance is now a leading and costly cause of delays for mining projects.The rise of social risk, complemented by the need to earn the trust of an increasing number of stakeholders so that mining projects can be developed effectively, is problematic for the industry. Conflicts are occurring in situations where companies are fully compliant with regulatory and legal requirements, despite initiatives by mining companies to earn social acceptance and despite the proliferation of tools to support corporate social responsibility. Intensifying the impact of social risk is the fact that it has increased during a time in the global mining sector when companies have had to grapple with declining commodity prices, increasing capital costs and debt levels and the challenges of mining lower-grade deposits.This paper will explore a hypothesis that in today’s interconnected society, social risk in the mining sector constitutes a legitimate business risk that must be managed strategically. The reality facing mining companies is that information, once considered confidential, now travels quickly on social networks and via a growing number of groups and individuals that have earned a legitimate right to be classified as stakeholders in projects that affect their communities. To be successful, it is suggested that companies will benefit from increasing internal collaboration and providing training to equip teams to mitigate social risk to mining projects and protect reputation capital. In the mine of this study, cemented hydraulic backfill is placed under the form of a slurry at a percentage of solid by weight varying from 50 to 65 per cent. This slurry settles and cures in the stope. During this process an important amount of water must be drained from the scope. Field observations in the case studied here show that the geometry of the drains system has a significant impact on the drainage of the stopes. The mode of filling produces a backfill showing an evident stratification typical of a sedimentation process. In situ observations on this material show that this stratification translates into a very strong heterogeneity in the physical properties of the cemented backfill. This heterogeneity should affect the hydraulic conductivity of the backfill in the scope. In order to study this aspect, finite element simulations were performed. This paper presents the results of these simulations, where the impact of this stratification on hydraulic conductivity is related to the performance of the backfill drainage system for various geometry. This preliminary study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the role of the drains in the dewatering process of the backfilled stope in the case of this Mine.

The latest outcome of science is that aII bodies are composed of vibrating atoms or molecules. In almost all mineral bodies when changing from the gaseous or liquid condition to the solid, if the vibrating molecules are allowed free play, they arrange themselves in a symmetrical manner, and at a definite angle to each other: This angle varies with each system of crystallization. In a great many bodies this process may be brought about artificially, and the growth of the crystal watched. The most common method is to dissolve some substance in water or some other liquid, on slowly evaporating the liquid, the substance dissolved will solidify and the molecules will arrange themselves in their particular crystalline form.The element carbon crystallizes in two forms; as graphite in the form of a short six-sided prism', and in the diamond generally as the octohedron in the cubical system of crystallization. Orystalline bodies, as a rule, have plain faces but what is remarkable in the diamond is that in a great many cases the faces are rounded. Its great beauty as a gem when cut, and the high artificial value placed upon it by fashion, as well as its value as a cutting and boring instrument-it being the hardest body in nature-has caused many attempts to be made to form it artificially. These attempts have met with fair success as a scientific experiment, but as a commercial speculation they have been a complete failure. The most noted of these experIments was carried out by Mr. Hannay, of Glasgow.Paraffin spirit with lithium was submitted td prolonged heating in strong wrought-iron tubes securely welded. In most of the experiments the tubes exploded; but in a few cases the experiments were successful, and on cutting open the tubes small crystals of diamonds were found embedded in a black mass.Despretz produced minute diamonds under the influence of a powerful electric current from coal.

Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

"The current economic challenges faced by the mining industry led to a review of options for reducing the cost of ventilation control devices (VCDs). The VCDs at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland typically experienced significant damage on the operating levels and required expensive replacements. Ventilation controls can become damaged by the effects of stope firings. This paper discusses the nature of blast wave effects, giving consideration to distance from the firing and changes in mine geometry. The time taken to adjust the airflow on the operating levels with the current VCDs resulted in the loss of productivity opportunities. The mine site engaged an equipment supplier to collaborate on the development of a high-strength regulator to control the required airflows within its underground workings.The strengthened regulator proved to be cost-effective and provided additional benefits, including ease of use, simplicity of installation and speed of change in the control of available ventilating airflow. An added advantage of the re-engineered regulator compared to contemporary VCDs is its flexibility, which includes the ability to easily move mobile equipment into different ventilation districts where required without the need to remove the VCD from its location. Space-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is becoming available over much of the world, includingNew Zealand. Radar imagery has a number of very advantageous features, including all-weather capability; it also has artifacts, such as layover, which require processing before these data may be used to best effect.   This paper gives an outline of SAR, details the image processing required, and discusses the use of the first New Zealand Japan Earth Resources-1 SAR data to aid geological mapping on the Coromandel Peninsula.

During longwall mining in the Bowen Basin, open tension cracks formed by overburden subsidence occur to a height of about 175 m above the mining horizon. Within this zone, water in aquifers or inundated workings will flow into the mine.At the Oaky Creek mines Aquila seam, open cut pits containing pit water overlie German Creek seam longwall panels at a height of about 105 m. The highly saline water is classified as contaminated and cannot be discharged off-site. Because alternative water storage facilities were not available, innovative water management solutions were needed to allow longwall mining to proceed without underground flooding.Computer modelling and underground inflow measurements have been completed to accurately determine inflow rates into longwall mines from overlying water sources at increasing overburden heights. Research work has also included determining cost-effective blanket treatment of final voids and reshaping spoil piles to minimise downward seepage.Ponded water overlying the Aquila low, Grasstree south and A6 pits required remedial works prior to longwall undermining to prevent flooding. In the Aquila low pit it was necessary to partition the pit and remove water overlying longwall 32. Two in-pit bridges were constructed by dozing and track compacting low wall spoil. The final void above the longwall panel was kept dry during undermining. Maximum recorded underground inflow rate was 30.0 L/s.The Grasstree south pit final void, part of the ramp and much of the spoil piles were inundated prior to undermining of 308 panel. A bridge and blanket were required to prevent ponding above the longwall. Maximum recorded inflow during undermining was 23.2 L/s.The pit A6 south final void, which contained dumped, saturated rejects and inundated highwall mining entries was undermined by longwall 36 at the Oaky No 1 underground mine. Because mapping of highwall entries was not available, the maximum calculated inflow rate of 73.0 L/s was based on all design entries being fully inundated. The actual inflow rate during longwall mining ranged up to 20.0 L/s.Water management improvements that have been implemented include greater use of contaminated pit water to wash coal, use of evaporation fans, and installation of a 6 ML/day reverse osmosis plant for water purification.CITATION:Klenowski, G and Winter, S, 2017. Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. This paper discusses various issues surrounding the metallurgical control for furnaces, especially focusing on processes with long time-constants and æmetallurgical memoriesÆ. Examples will focus on furnaces accepting particulate and sometimes ill-defined feeds, eg submerged-arc furnaces, blast furnaces, secondary scrap smelting operations, recycling operations, waste incinerators, etc. Generally, because of the usually higher metallurgical time constant of these furnaces, these reactors have to be controlled in a feed-forward manner by the use of a hybrid of æblack boxÆ or empirical and ægrey boxÆ semi-empirical first principles metallurgical modelling and simulation techniques in a supervisory metallurgical control capacity.

The Royal Bafokeng community in South AfricaÆs North West Province represents a unique case in Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of its positioning in the natural resource economy. It receives royalties directly from mining firms for the extraction of Platinum Group Metals, which include platinum, ferrochrome, rhodium and palladium. In 2007, royalty income of about R290 million (approximately US$32.2 million) was reported. Such direct revenues have enabled the community to invest in educational, medical and other social infrastructure, thus complementing governmentÆs social provisioning efforts. Indeed, the Bafokeng community owes its present-day modernisation efforts to mineral rights, and in particular, the legal-institutional arrangement that has enabled it to play an active role in South AfricaÆs lucrative extractive economy. However, the distribution of platinum wealth in this community is not only uneven, but also appears to have had little impact on the broader socio-economic conditions in the community. Despite claims by community leaders of heavy investment in education and skills development, the community continues to be faced with very high levels of unemployment, illiteracy, sprawling informal settlements, poor access to medical facilities and malnutrition. This paper examines the sociological paradoxes and contradictions thrown up by the approach adopted to involve community members in the mobilisation of mining royalties for developmental ends. The central argument is that the current æmodelÆ contradicts the communityÆs stated goals of using platinum wealth to drive up broad-based development and modernisation. This is mainly because it leaves out the vast majority of community members, who are uneducated and unskilled. The core analysis is based on pilot data from an ongoing study in the Royal Bafokeng community.

The foundation of effective leadership is communication. You can have all the leadership theories, models and training you want, but in the end it is all about leaders talking to, listening to and understanding the point of view of those below and above them.The foundation of effective safety is peoples’ behaviours. Every incident, every near miss and every safe act comes down to what one person does and how that affects themselves and others. We tend to focus these behavioural considerations on the people at the ‘coal face’, those most in harm’s way. But it is the individual behaviours of everyone in the organisation, particularly those at the top, which are just as (if not more) important. The foundation of effective safety leadership in the mining industry is that it starts at the top, with the individual behaviours of leaders. The behaviours of each and every leader will be reflected in their teams. And where their teams are made up of leaders, these leaders will pass these behaviours on to their teams and so on. It’s the sum total of what people see their leaders do and what they do as a result, that creates the ‘culture’ of the business – and it’s this culture that makes or breaks how safely people work.
