Different conventional and non-conventional flowsheet configurations were examined for the treatment of a number of refractory lead-zinc and copper-lead-zinc ores containing carbonaceous pyrite, flotable non sulphide gangue and pre-activated zinc. The flowsheet configuration for the processing of complex massive sulphide ores has a remarkable effect on the overall metallurgical results. Conventional sequential flowsheets, with circulation of intermediate products for both lead-zinc and copper-lead-zinc ores, gave poor metallurgical results and often saleable concentrates were difficult to produce. The concept of semi-bulk flotation and double bulk flotation with coarser grinding of the ore, followed by single or double-stage regrinding and sequential flotation was established to be most effective in achieving optimum metallurgical results. This flowsheet design gave superior results as compared to the conventional sequential flowsheet, and resulted in a lower reagent consumption, a significant reduction in the circulation load of intermediate products, and improvement in the rate of flotation of valuable minerals. Thus, optimum flotation conditions were provided for different products within the flowsheet.

This work aimed at evaluating the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of five samples of a Brazilian gold sulfide mine in a decommissioning process. Three of the most traditional ARD prediction techniques, Standard Acid Base Accounting (Std ABA), Modified Acid Base Accounting (Modified ABA), as static methods, and humidity cells as a kinetic method were tested. Both the Std ABA and the Modified ABA results indicated an acid generation potential for some of the studied samples. In the other cases the results were inconclusive. The five samples were then submitted to humidity cell tests during 27 to 30 weeks. At the end of the period, the leachate pH was stabilised in a range from 3.4 - 4.1 (four samples) to 5 (one sample). The presence of relatively high levels of sulfate and dissolved metals was detected throughout the operation, specifically, Ni and Zn, and less frequently, As. These findings are discussed with the help of the samples mineralogy and Eh-pH diagrams. The results obtained in this investigation indicated potential environmental risks of this mining area. In this particular case, the kinetic tests were shown to be essential to the identification of the samples ARD potential.

The low grade Mount Charlotte orebody was first mined with minimum capital expenditure by mechanised cut and fill stoping. The lower block was prepared simultaneously for open stoping by shaft sinking and installing another crusher and services. Similar development for the third block was discouraged by economic factors and reduced tonnage. Decline develop- ment required less capital and opened up ore reserves commensurate with advance, providing flexibility to stop operations without commit- ment: A 1 in 7 decline measuring 4.25m x 5.5m to accommodate standard Euclid 25 tonne dump trucks was developed south of the orebody. A fleet of four trucks average 12 loads each per shift over a haul distance of 700m.

Long Shaft has traditionally been seen as one of the most challenging mines in the Kambalda area with operations having been suspended by the previous owners in 1999. When mining recommenced in October 2002, the current owners (Lightning Nickel) decided that a different approach was required for mining operations in such an aggressive geotechnical environment. This paper describes how Lightning Nickel has successfully and safely operated the Long Shaft complex on a traditional mining approach, which encompasses the key learnings of the previous owners.

This paper describes the design, manufacture and site services associated with the supply of mine hoists for the new mine under construction by Falconbridge Limited in Ontario, Canada. Two new shafts are being sunk, and the hoisting equipment at each shaft can be summarised as follows: Ventilation shaft:4.66 m diameter double-drum second-hand hoist, originally in operation at San Manuel Mine, Arizona, to be used as the shaft sinking hoist. The second-hand hoist presented a challenge in that during its previous life, the hoist had been intensively operated during service at San Manuel Mine, and this paper describes the scope of refurbishment work undertaken, both electrically and mechanically, to ensure future reliable operation, together with the requirement to meet Canadian and Ontario regulations and codes of practice. 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist to be used as a second means of egress. Main shaft:4.57 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used initially as the shaft sinking hoist, and subsequently to be converted to the equivalent of a single-drum multi-rope hoist for service duties during the production phase; 5.49 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used for skip hoisting during the production phase; and 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist.The new hoists are all designed to comply with SABS requirements such that hoisting with reduced rope safety factors will be possible in the future. This paper describes the principles involved both mechanically and electrically. Particular attention is paid to the conversion of the main shaft service hoist from a double-drum sinking hoist to a multi-rope hoist.This paper describes the ac electrical powertrains (drives and motors) used that eliminate the need for harmonic filters and reactive power compensation equipment since they exhibit no negative effects on the utility electrical network system. The Australian economy has been adversely affected by the hesitation in developing countries to commit to the construction of .new coal-fired power stations. World coal trade which was expected to grow at an appreciable rate has stagnated, world export coal prices have plummetted, and facilities in place in Australia for the production and export of coal are being underutilized. While in some countries this hesitation has been caused by a reduction in electricity load growth, another cause has been the unduly long lead-time imposed on developing countries by the conventional "Banker's Approach" to the planning and initiation of commitments to finance and construct coal-fired power plants. In some countries electricity growth has been met by increased usage of indigenous energy resources, even though this involves costs in excess of imported coal-fired power generation. The avoidance of foreign exchange commitments in these cases can however be desirable. In many other developing countries however, fuel oil continues to be used for power generation at a cost in foreign exchange of up to 50% above the total cost of coal fuel plus capital to construct a new coal-fired power station. The conventional "Bankers Approach" to new power station planning imposes the need for successive feasibility studies to satisfy the normal processes of international development lending agencies. No feasibility study can however, show how keen vendor countries may be to win major power plant contracts; and no feasibility study can determine whether the power station eventually procured will be one of the more reliable, at better than 80% availability, or one of the more unreliable at worse than 60% Availability.

Spherical calcium dioleate particles (~10 ¦m in diameter) were used as AFM (atomic force microscope) probes to measure interaction forces of the collector colloid with calcite and fluorite surfaces. The attractive AFM force between the calcium dioleate sphere and the fluorite surface is strong and has longer range than DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) prediction. The repulsive AFM force between the calcium dioleate sphere and the fluorite surface does not agree with the DLVO prediction. Consideration of non-DLVO forces, including the attractive hydrophobic force and the repulsive hydration force, was necessary to explain the experimental results. The non-DLVO interactions considered were justified by the different interfacial water structures at fluorite- and calcite-water interfaces as revealed by the numerical computation experiments using molecular dynamics simulation.

The Key Centre for Mines consists of the School of Mines of the University of New South Wales and the Departments of Geology and Civil and Mining Engineering of Wollongong University. The Key Centre for Mines/International promotes, markets and develops overseas activities in applied geology, mining engineering, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy specifically in response to the perceived needs in the region for mineral resource and other related earth-science based development. the Key Centre for Mines/International will be involved in the overseas marketing of formal courses; special training activities such as short courses and in-house programs; technical and educational consultancy; research and development projects, and in the establishment of regional links through twinning, exchange and various network arrangements with other organisations in the region. Activities which are now being developed include a training program for Korean mining engineers and geologists, teaching and curriculum development in the Mineral Resources Engineering Faculty of the University Sains Malaysia and a staff development proposal for the Department of Geotechnology of Khon Kaen University, Thailand

The fluorspar deposits at Okorusu, Namibia are closely related to an alkaline igneous ring complex of late Cretaceous age (125¦7 Ma). The fluorite ores consist of relatively fine-grained purple replacement fluorite and subsequent coarser-grained purple and green vug-filling fluorite crystals. Homogenisation temperature measurements for 38 primary fluid inclusions shows that main stage purple to green fluorite crystals were deposited over a temperature range from 166¦C to 144¦C, and minor late yellow fluorite was deposited at lower temperatures from 132¦C to 128¦C. Homogenisation and freezing temperatures measured for 18 primary fluid inclusions shows that the fluorite-depositing fluids were less saline than Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) ore fluids and overlap the lower temperature range of fluids that deposited epithermal ore deposits. Mining in three open pits (A, B and C) at Okorusu has gradually provided exposures which reveal that the fluorite orebodies have been emplaced primarily by the preferential replacement of carbonatites. Evidence for the replacement of carbonatite includes: replacement remnants of carbonatite within the fluorite ores; goethite pseudomorphs after the carbonatite minerals, pyroxene, pyrrhotite and magnetite, which are disseminated in the fluorite ores; andpartial replacement by fluorite of a large sill-like carbonatite body in the A pit. Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in unreplaced portions of the carbonatites show that their mineralogy consists of titaniferous magnetite, diopside pyroxene, apatite, biotite and calcite. Magnetite contains 6.97 per cent to 10.46 per cent TiO2, averages 8.44 per cent TiO2, and has an average V2O3 content of 0.35 per cent. At high magnifications under the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the magnetite shows abundant fine ulv÷spinel exsolution lamellae arranged in a cloth texture. Apatite contains moderately high fluorine contents that range from 3.21 to 5.0 per cent and average 4.2 per cent, and apatite crystals range in total rare earth oxides from 1.7 per cent to 2.61 per cent. Pyroxenes in the carbonatites are iron-rich diopside, and they contrast to pyroxenes in the fenites that are aegirine-augite. All of the microprobe analyses for mica crystals in the carbonatites give biotite compositions. Microscopic examination of fluorite concentrates from Okorusu provides mineralogical information important to the resolution of beneficiation problems. Fluorite ores that are related to carbonatites are typically accompanied by phosphorus benefication problems. The cause for the presence of phosphate in some of the Okorusu fluorite concentrates is a function of the presence of binary locked fluorite-apatite particles. The fluorite ores have also replaced marble locally in the A pit, especially along the A band in the B pit, and dominantly in the orebody proposed for the new C pit. Those ores are characterised by fine grain sizes, faint remnant bedding, lack of carbonatite mineral pseudomorphs and local presence of remnants of unreplaced marble. Concentrates derived from those fluorite ores are devoid of phosphorus, but commonly have elevated silica contents due the presence of free quartz. Carbonatite and marble were preferentially replaced by fluorite because the calcite was readily soluble in the presence of the fluorite-depositing fluids and the dissolution of calcite provided calcium for the formation of fluorite.

A new leaching regime was implemented at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MinesÆ (KCGM) Gidji plant on a cyanide leach of ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate. High lime concentration and lead nitrate were used to overcome the refractoriness of the fine sulfides (high reactivity of fine sulfides with the presence of gold tellurides). The leach pretreatment stage was shown to be detrimental and was shut down. Lime titration was introduced as part of the process control. It was shown that the leach could be performed at low dissolved oxygen, (ie 3 - 5 ppm) to avoid sulfide oxidation and the associated high cyanide and lime consumption. Plant results showed reduced cyanide consumption (40 per cent) and an accelerated leaching rate, whereby most of the gold was dissolved in 24 hours compared to 72 hours used previously. Similar work was performed at KCGMÆs Fimiston plant, which leached a combined ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate along with the slimes fraction from hydrocycloning the bulk flotation concentrate. The use of lead nitrate, high lime and carbon-in-leach generated a faster leaching rate and minimised adsorption of gold on fine pyrite particles. The grind, previously controlled with a P80, was replaced by a P98 to give a better operational indication of top size hydrocyclone performance. Before the implementation of the changes, average leach residues for slimes and UFG were respectively 4.0 g/t and 5.5 g/t. With the modifications to the leaching regime, average leach residues were lower by 1.5 - 2.0 g/t. Whilst significant improvements have been demonstrated, further work is progressing at KCGM to further reduce ultra-fine concentrate leach tail grades, and also to improve the understanding of concentrate refractoriness and the factors responsible for differences between laboratory and plant leach results. Estimated profits since the implementation of the new approach are in the range of $A3.5 million per year.

The hydraulic-stowing mining method is most effective for mining thick coal seams. It is superior to the sliced cover- caving and artificial mining method and the fully mechanized sublevel-caving mining method for the following reasons - a much higher recovery rate is achieved, there is much less surface subsidence and roof pressure, there is no hidden danger of gob fire, and much less methane emission and coal dust problems, etc.. However, its superiority is overshadowed by its backward stowing technique which makes mechanisation of mining and stowing difficult, causes bleed water interference to production and to the environment and is uneconomic because of the high cost of stowing material. These disadvantages limited its application to coal seams that are difficult and not suitable to be mined by other mining methods. The remedy is in reforming it thoroughly to permit mining of otherwise unminable seams and this paper presents the reformation.

The sucessful use of sewage sludge in land rehabilitation has been established and there is an abundance of overseas information on sludge reuse. Unfortunately Australia is behind Europe and North America in establishing sludge reuse policies and regulations. In Victoria the EPA has no publicised regulations and no communicated policy for sludge reuse. In the absence of sound regulations the onus is firmly on the operators of sewage treatment works to ensure land application of sludge is safe for the environment.

The results presented here show quite definitely that in the system investigated the intensity of dispersion is enhanced by switching the flow entry from bottom to sides of the packed trough. Since there is no reason to suppose that this would not be true generally then it is not surprising that the blast furnace dispersion data of Standish and Polthier lie above the data for packed columns with bottom fluid entry. In fact, on the basis of the present results, blast furnace dispersion results can never equal standard packed column behaviour but must always be above these. The result that the intensity of dispersion in the trough model is higher closer to the side ports than away from them is at variance with that of Standish and Polthier blast furnace results. Aside from the obvious structural differences between these two systems, it is thought that the presence of raceways and the tortuous path of the gas flow in the furnace may provide an answer. Clearly this is an important difference in the behaviour of the two systems and further investigations designed to clarify the position would have significant practical value. This would also give an indication of how the furnace D/ud values may be decreased along the whole height - assuming of course that this result gives the best overall performance of the furnace. However, there is to date no knowledge whatsoever about this aspect of blast furnace Technology.

Production of refined zinc (99.95 per cent) at the minesite without increasing greenhouse gas emissions is considered. As an example, exploitation of the full reserve of the McArthur River orebody is proposed, using the existing concentrator, whilst introducing radically innovative smelting technology. Bulk flotation of all the sulphide minerals is followed by smelting in a melt circulation reactor with tonnage oxygen. By smelting the high-energy pyritic concentrate and reacting the evolved sulphur dioxide with near-mine dolomite, a large amount of electricity can be generated. This is enough to supply all the requirements for the smelter itself, an air separation plant and a facility for compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is disposed of off-shore for enhanced oil recovery or by other means. The reacted dolomite fixes sulphur as an inert and environmentally acceptable solid residue. Treatment by these means leads to virtually zero gas emission smelting. The paper concludes with a vision for the future in which expansion of zinc smelting capacity is seen to be definitely needed.

Australian coal mines have spent considerable capital on dragline improvements over the last two years. This has included ~$30 M on UDD conversions, >$20 M on new buckets, boom upgrades, electrical upgrades, etc. This is a natural part of the response of mining companies to technology and replacement programs. Capital expenditure is a normal part of the ongoing success of most companies. There is however, a tendency for some people to rely on the capital alone to provide the ongoing improvements in equipment productivity. Implementing new technology through capital expenditure is only part of the equation in continuous improvement. For 80 - 90 per cent of the year, the operator controls the productivity achieved by the dragline. Variation between operators is huge. The average standard deviation in productivity is 12 per cent and maintenance impact is over 40 per cent. Robbins 2003, states: Contrary to what we were taught in grade school, we werenÆt all created equal. Most of us are to the left of the median on some normally distributed ability curve. Further, he states: The issue is knowing how people differ in abilities and using that knowledge to increase the likelihood that an employee will perform his or her job well. There are two options for reducing variability between operators; improving operator ability and getting the machine to take over what the operator is doing (automation). Dragline automation will be discussed, however, this paper will focus more on the æhuman factorÆ and how to establish a dragline with minimum variability between operators.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. The physical and chemical properties of both wet sediment pastes and magmas envisaged as hydrolised silicate masses are entirely dependent on the enormous internal surfaces of their disordered solvated components. During 2002, design and development of the worldÆs largest flotation cell was completed. The cell is the mineral industryÆs first 257 m3 flotation cell, and represents a major development in the design of larger flotation cells, with a 50 per cent increase in cell volume over the widely installed 160 m3 WEMCO« SmartCellTM flotation machine. It is anticipated, in the next few years, world-class copper sulfide concentrators will incorporate 257 m3 flotation cells in their rougher-scavenger flotation circuits. The prototype 257 m3 cell, No 250 SmartCellTM flotation machine is installed in Minera Los PelambresÆ existing rougher flotation circuit. The machine is located in front of the first cell in Row 1 and is followed by nine No 130 SmartCellTM flotation cells. The unit has been in operation since April 2004, and has proven itself in this duty. A key to the successful development of the equipment has been the emphasis placed on fundamental hydrodynamic scale-up criteria. Hydrodynamic factors include superficial gas velocity, water (pulp) circulation through the draft tube, and pulp mixing (distribution) characteristics. This paper will review the scale-up criteria of the No 250 flotation cell, and a case study will be presented on the in-plant testing of the equipment. The case study will document the metallurgical and hydrodynamic performance of the machine. It will also illustrate the economic benefits derived by incorporating larger flotation cells in a modern copper sulfide concentrator.

"DEEPHOLE " or "Longhole" drilling is the name given to the drilling of prospecting holes with the pneumatic hammer drill. The drilling bit is of the same form, and is prepared in the same way as ordinary rock drill steel, and is extended to the bottom of the hole by sectional hollow rods, through which water is forced.The cuttings from the hole provide a sample of the ground drilled.Deephole drilling was developed at an American mine where the cost of diamond drilling, owing to loss of diamonds, was excessive, and proved very successful, holes being drilled as deep as 220 ft., in limestone, at a cost of one dollar per foot. The use of the method in other mines, and in a variety of rocks, has since been described in the technical literature. From the published descriptions the following data are drawn:
