Following extensive R&D efforts, Hydro Magnesium has launched a new alloy series with remarkable combinations of properties. The AE alloy family is based on additions of aluminium and rare earth elements to control mechanical properties, including elevated temperature creep strength. By combining these alloying elements with manganese additions, high purity alloys with outstanding corrosion performance are defined. A basic philosophy behind the developments has been to simultaneously approach all the critical issues related to developing a commercial material. Apart from the obvious requirements for material properties, the critical issues relate to die casting performance, as well as alloy production, recycling and environmental compatibility. Some of the important elements related to alloy production and recycling are addressed in the present paper.

Experimental Mine, Val d'Or, Quebec, Experiments on the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives have been conducted in a 1 m3 explosion chamber. The explosives tested are ANFO, emulsion, aluminized emulsion and Detasheet. By controlling the composition of the ANFO and the emulsion explosive the oxygen balance could be changed in order to identify the dominant factors in the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives. Experimental results, combined with theoretical calculations, show that the temperature of the detonation products is the most important parameter in the ignition of the dust cloud while the combustible detonation products are of secondary importance in the case of non-aluminized mining explosives. In the case of aluminized explosives and explosives having very negative oxygen balance the ignition of the dust cloud is assisted by the large amount of combustible detonation products.

"The nickel ores of Sudbury contain substantial amounts of the gangue mineral pyrrhotite (Fe7S&) which causes certain diflculties in the milling of these ores. This paper proposes a process called “magnetoflotation” as an effective means of dealing with pyrrhotite. The method reduces the pyrrhotite content of concentrates by applying a magneticjield on the path product as it leaves the flotation cell.Successful performance of magnetoflotation requires the optimization of several variables. In this study, three of the variables (air flowrate, collector concentration, pother concentration) were investigated by Box- Wilson experimental design, and others (magnet speed, grind size, pulp density, flotation time) were examined individually. The process was tested on a Falconbridge nickel ore, assaying 1.92% Ni, and under the best operating conditions, a concentrate was obtained with 13.56% Ni grade and 74.32% recovery in a single step. Further improvements to grade and recovery were possible by cleaning and scavenging. The same ore was also tested with conventional methods for comparison, and results indicated that magnetoflotation performed better.INTRODUCTION“Magnetoflotation” refers to the process of carrying out magnetic separation and flotation simultaneously within the same device, and is intended to prevent magnetic minerals from reporting to the froth products while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. Typical cases where this method might be beneficial include the processing of magnetite and nickel ores. Its use on magnetite ores has been reported elsewhere [Yalcin, 1992; Yalcin, 19931. This paper describes its application to nickel ores, more specifically to the nickel ore of Falconbridge Limited in Sudbury."

"With the emphasis in the past decade on larger and more efficient equipment for open-pit operations, the Normandie mine of the Asbestos Corporation has followed the trend, switching from the smaller type of percussion drills to down-the-hole rigs. One 5 Y2 -in. percussion drill is still in use, but is limited to a ""smooth blasting"" role or to the control of the slope on final benches.In keeping with the times, an attempt was made to eliminate, as much as possible, the use of high explosives and to maximize the percentage of ammonium nitrate -fuel oil mixture. As the concentration of ground water increased with increased mining depths, small pumps were initially employed for the dewatering of boreholes. This proved unsuccessful, and a hole-blowing rig was built and a conversion to plastic liners made. The acquisition of a bulk-mix AN-FO truck has permitted the changeover from an AN premix to an ammonium nitrate prill -fuel oil combination at the borehole."

DEVELOPMENT at Steep Rock lake has given rise to renewed interest in the geology of the iron ore deposits in the Lake Superior Region and has implications of no small moment bearing upon methods of exploration in the Precambrian Shield generally. Following upon the Regional Lake Superior meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in August, 1941, the authors prepared a paper on the Steep Rock deposits, which appeared in the A.I.M.E. publication, Mining Technology, for January, 1943. Between Januar7 and April, 1943, exploration at Steep Rock was continued by means o vertical, Mesabi-type churn-drill holes put down from the ice. This drilling has enlarged the tonnage of ore previously known and has disclosed further facts relating to the origin of the ore. The added evidence, we believe, goes to support the hypothesis that the deposits were formed by a process of replacement due to upward-moving, iron-bearing solutions which came in as igneous after-effects. Accordingly, in presenting the subject to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, it seems best not to change our first explanation, but to prefix the original paper with an interpretation of the results of the more recent explorations completed after its publication.

Medium carbon, low alloy, high-strength steels containing Ni, Cr, and Mo are used for the fabrication of various types of high-strength fasteners required for launch vehicle structures. Cold heading properties and response to hardening and tempering are the essential requirements of the material for fabrication and application, respectively. Combining these two requirements is essentially warranted in high-strength fastener-grade steels. Cold heading properties require ductility, which can be achieved through spheroidizing treatments. In the absence of a suitable spheroidizing cycle for medium carbon 3.8 Ni, 1.8 Cr, 0.3 Mo steel, experiments were carried out with a theoretical understanding of the alloy system. This paper presents the experiments and results obtained after a spheroidizing treatment, which was carried out to optimize the process. Hardness measurements were carried out and microstructural studies were conducted to assess the spheroidization process and to determine the optimal spheroidization parameters.

"This presentation will provide a demonstration of the methodology used in designing a modern shaft and hoisting plant utilizing a review of the challenges faced and solutions delivered for the Elk Creek Superalloy Materials Project (Niobium/Scandium). The development of the design required the review of complex hydrogeological conditions, mine production requirements, demanding capital expenditure (CAPEX) limitations and tight schedules. Through an extensive review of various alternatives to satisfy these constraints, the Nordmin Group (including Nordmin Engineering Ltd.) (Nordmin) was able to define a concept and design that addressed risks to the project, met production requirements, cost and schedule constraints and improved constructability. INTRODUCTION The Elk Creek Project, owned by NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NioCorp) presently, will become Nebraska’s first underground metals mine, built to access the Elk Creek Niobium/Scandium deposit. The development of the design for this facility required the review of challenging hydrogeological conditions, mine production requirements, demanding CAPEX limitations and tight schedules. Through an extensive review of various alternatives to satisfy these constraints, the Nordmin Group was able to define a concept and design that addressed risks to the project, met production requirements, cost and schedule constraints and improved constructability. This paper will review the challenges faced, and solutions arrived at in a demonstration of a methodology used in designing a modern shaft and hoisting plant. THE CHALLENGES Nordmin became involved in the project in 2015, invited by the Feasibility Study Consultant to provide input on estimating and layouts for the new operation. Many of the fundamental decisions regarding mining methodology, water handling and production strategy had been made, and the scope of Nordmin’s involvement was very limited in this first engagement. Following submission of that study in late 2017/early 2018, Nordmin had opportunity to discuss the overall effort, and its many assumptions and challenges, with NioCorp’s project team. The dialogue quickly identified several significant opportunities to improve the project construction schedule and costs along with the mine production profile and operational approach while reducing project risk."

"Prediction of a variable sulphur content in Cape Breton seams is important for planning the production of a highgrade metallurgical coal. Two extrapolation methods (Kriging and a version of Universal Kriging) to predict sulphur content in blocks of coal before mining are presented and applied to the New Lingan Mine reserves in the Harbour seam. The uncertainty of the predicted values is expressed by using standard deviations. Some statistical results for the Phalen seam, which occurs about 400 ft below the Harbour seam, are presented for comparison. The two mathematical models consist of two sets of equations which have been used in computer algorithms. Some limitations of the present approach and possibilities for further statistical work are indicated."

"Although Canada has achieved one of the highest living standards in the world, people and organizations have, over the past decade, begun to question the cost and means of this achievement. Concern has been expressed about the degree of environmental disturbance arising from industrial activities which have greatly contributed to our increased living standards. These industries include hardrock mining, pit and quarry operations, hydro-electric schemes, various agricultural enterprises and urban land developments.In the construction and operation of the above industries many environmental problems arise because the natural vegetative land cover is destroyed or drastically disturbed. Disturbance may occur to such a degree that revegetation is di ffi cult, often it appears impossible. Portions of the environment around such industries remain aesthetically unacceptable and appear to offer little or no potential for future resource use in wildlife, recreation or agriculture.The general public cannot dissociate itself from the activities of the aforementioned industries. It has, over many years, accepted the benefits and conveniences arising from those activities. Despite this, the increasing level of public concern imposes upon industry a need to alleviate or repair past, present and future environmental disturbance. Therefore it is incumbent upon industry to modify present technology or develop new techniques which would allow the disturbed environment to be easily and rapidly repaired."

Cathode stripping machine technology has been developed significantly both in electrorefining (ER) and electrowinning (EW) applications in the last ten years. The main driver has been robotic cathode handling, which has enabled increased flexibility to meet different layout and material handling requirements for both ER and EW processes. Additionally, cathode stripping stations have been continuously developed to optimize speed and to reduce mechanical stress of permanent cathodes. 'taco' type cathodes have been proven as beneficial approach for high capacity operations (particularly in Cu ER), where over 600 cathodes per hour continuous throughput has been achieved. However, the latest developments also apply to split type cathode stripping. Besides material handling, the modern cathode stripping machine has also an important role to provide information for production and quality monitoring. This paper describes the latest developments from the field of copper cathode stripping based on several different projects implemented in the recent years. INTRODUCTION After introduction of the permanent cathode technology in the late 1970s, it became the prevailing technology in copper refineries over the traditional starting sheet process by the end of 1980s. The main driver was less labour-intensive production due to fewer processing steps required along with more automated electrode handling equipment (cathode stripping machine, anode preparation machine, anode scrap washing machine and tankhouse cranes). Since then the design of the cathode stripping machine has followed the development of permanent cathode technology. The main development steps so far can be summarized as follows: Full Deposit Stripping Machine (FDSM) based on waxed permanent cathodes or cathodes with bottom edge strips resulting in split cathodes (copper sheets separated, see Figure 1) Wax less cathode stripping based on V-groove on bottom of the edge strip resulting in either ‘taco’ cathodes (enveloped copper sheets, see Figure 1) or split cathodes Full Deposit Robotic Stripping Machines (FDRSM) using 1–5 robots for permanent cathode handling and cathode stacking.

"A baseline survey of the partially open lead regrind circuit at Red Dog Mine indicated poor regrind efficiencies for the three parallel 450 HP tower mills. Driven by the high energy cost and the potential metallurgical gain brought by improved mineral liberation, the Red Dog lead regrind circuit was optimized in two stages.In the first optimization stage, different circuit layouts were evaluated in two plant trials. In June 2003, the regrind circuit was changed to a fully closed circuit. This reduced the tower mill requirement from three to two mills. The circuit modification payback was 11 days through power savings alone.The second stage of optimization was the evaluation of reagent addition. To improve pyrite depression, sodium cyanide was added to the feed of the lead regrind tower mills and tested in a series of plant trials over several mill feed stockpiles. Galena selectivity against pyrite was found to improve in these plant trials. Due to environmental sensitivities, no net increase in cyanide addition to the plant occurred and thus no increase in the cyanide concentrations in the tailings pond or the environment will result.The lead regrind optimization work improved the overall lead metallurgical performance and reduced energy and reagent costs. Economic analysis showed that annual profit increased by as much as US$3.0 M."

If humanity is truly serious about reducing emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, today’s power plants burning fossil fuels will have to be replaced by power plants that do not emit CO₂. Unless carbon capture/sequestration becomes practical, the new power plants will be hydroelectric, wind, solar or nuclear installations. Hydroelectricity requires the appropriate geography. Solar installations can only deliver power as and when sunshine is available, and wind installations when the wind blows. Therefore, power from these sources will be intermittent, but the demand for electricity does not follow the patterns of sun and wind. That will require large-scale electricity storage and/or load following by the remaining power suppliers, increasingly so as the use of fossil fuelled power generation declines. Modern nuclear power plants are designed for demand following. However, operating at lower than design output has a negative impact on the economics of nuclear power plants because the overall cost of the electricity they generate is dominated by capital cost. Primary (blast furnace) iron smelting is responsible for a significant part of global CO₂ emissions because the reagent used is carbon. Were it available in sufficient quantity (and at a low enough cost), hydrogen could replace carbon in the manufacture of raw direct reduced iron (DRI), using technology such as modified HYL (Tenova Hyl, 2018) or Midrex (Ravenscroft, 2017). This paper examines a scenario in which, instead of demand following, nuclear power stations are operated at their design capacities and surplus power is used to generate hydrogen in off-peak periods. This hydrogen is then used to replace carbon in the manufacture of raw steel.

Many mines in Canada, the US and S. Africa are reaching the hoisting limit. Very little payload will be possible without compromising safety due the excessive weight. It has been suggested (DeLorme, 2000), that one of the most attractive concepts to enable deeper hoisting is to reduce the allowable factor of safety in the wire rope. Researchers at the Spokane Research Lab are developing new technology to improve hoisting safety and productivity by providing new monitoring and analytical tools. A Shaft Conveyance Monitoring System (SCMS) has been developed which determines hoist rope end load, true conveyance position and acceleration, and rope safety factor, as well as other hoist operating parameters. This information is transmitted to the hoist operator display 20 times per second. Recent field measurements on 45 mm(1 ¾ in.) diameter hoist rope indicate that dynamic forces during loading of a 9000 kg(10 ton) skip may exceed the safety factor of the rope. To improve on the current understanding of the mechanical behavior of hoist ropes, and to help interpret the results from field-testing of the SCMS, a new approach to computer modeling of stranded wire rope is also being developed. Particle Flow Code, PFC3D (Itasca 1995b) is used to simulate the structural behavior of wire rope and the interaction between individual strands when the rope is subjected to static and dynamic end loading. Details of the SCMS, field results from the measured rope loads, and the results of numerical modeling on the wire rope will be discussed.

"Decisions regarding mining method and subsequent choice of excavator must take into account the quantitative factors of productivity, availability, and capital, operating, and maintenance costs. Dig performance was compared between a hydraulic excavator (HE) and electric rope shovel (RS) of similar size class (i.e., use the same amount of energy to excavate a unit quantity of the same material from a mining face), focusing on the quantitative factors above. Machine performance, normalized to bucket capacity, was assessed as a function of hours of service (60,000 hours per machine). Results showed higher production rates for the HE of similar capacity and age. In general, the RS exhibited lower service cost per volume capacity, though it had higher capital cost. "This paper describes the challenges of mining a sill pillar under various types of paste backfill quality. From 1994 to 2002, Louvicourt mine produced approximately 12,600,000 t grading 3.5% Cu, 1.5% Zn, 27 g/mt Ag, and 0.85 g/mt Au. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The production of this 4,300 t/d operation was accomplished using two mining horizons; from the 655 m level to the 415 m level and from the 860 m level to the 680 m level. The main sill pillar is between the 680 m level and the 655 m level. The second sill pillar is between the 885 m level and the 860 m level representing a quarter of the main sill pillar in size. Since 2002, production has gradually decreased and mining activities are expected to end in mid-2005. The sill pillar production will represent almost 25% of the total mine production. The overall recovery of the sill pillars stopes will be discussed in this paper. To recover the sill pillars, more than 1,500 m of development was planned in or under paste backfill. The first sill pillar stopes under paste backfill were mined out in 2002 with excellent results."

"In October 1982, Rio Algom Limited, purchased a tin prospect near East Kemptville, Nova Scotia, from Shell Canada Resources. This purchase led to the development of the first substantial tin mine in North America. This paper deals with the drillingand blasting operations at Rio Algom, in particular the use of emulsion explosives technology.This presentation describes what emulsion explosives and Heavy AN/FO are, and the support system used to deliver these products to the blast site.HistoryThe East Kemptville mine site was discovered by Shell Canada Resources (SCR) in July 1978. SCR started diamond drilling on the tin prospect in March 1979. After 8220 m of BQ drilling, it was estimated a reserve of 56 000 000 tonnes of 0.165% Sn was present.The property, which is located 54 km northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Fig. 1), showed, after a feasibility study that, given an ore treatment rate of 9000 tonnes per day, a mine life of 17 years could be expected.GeologyThe tin deposit of the East Kemptville Mine, occurs in granitic rocks at their contact with metasedimentary rocks. The mineralization is in the form of cassiterite with associated sulphides of copper and zinc. The tin occurs in a stockwork of tin bearing Greisen alteration zones.East Kemptville MineThe mine planned an open pit operation with the first five years being mined at a rate of 14 000 tonnes per day, of which 5000 tonnes will be waste and low grade ore. Eventually, the total mining rate will be 21 000 tonnes per day, including 12 000 tonnes of waste and low grade ore. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the mine site.East Kemptville Chooses Emulsion ExplosivesIn December 1984, East Kemptville Mine awarded the Explosives Division of C-I-L Inc. a contract to supply explosives to the borehole. "The activated carbon used in the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process to absorb gold is subject to breakage. This carbon breakage can be minimized, but it will always be necessary to deal with fine carbon particles, known as carbon fines. These fines contain a significant amount of gold and mining operations generally struggle with the treatment of this product. Since IAMGOLD’s Essakane mine is located in Burkina Faso, shipping carbon fines out of the country was not considered a viable solution due to the logistical burden and legal procedures in place. A benchmarking study demonstrated the complexity of treating carbon fines on site. IAMGOLD partnered with the host government to find an innovative approach to economically recover the gold locked in these fines. This paper describes the new circuits commissioned in July 2016 built to improve carbon fines collection, incinerate the carbon fines and leach the gold in the ashes produced by incineration. These new circuits successfully demonstrate that it is possible to extract more than 94% of the gold content in the carbon fines. This is profitable for the company as it improves the overall mill recovery rate by 1.0% to 1.5% and significantly decreases gold inventory build-up on site.INTRODUCTION The activated carbon used in the carbon-in-leach (CIL) to absorb gold is subject to breakage. This breakage can occur in the CIL tanks, the stripping circuit, the regeneration process or anywhere throughout the pumping and handling processes of carbon through the circuit. Fine carbon particles are invariably created and, because of their small size, present a large specific surface which favors gold absorption (Hilsher et al., 2014). At the very beginning of operations at Essakane, the carbon fines were recovered by means of a thickener and a filter press, but the circuit was undersized and inefficient. Subsequently, a decantation basin was used to settle the fines before the thickener. The settled fines were shovelled from the basin into bags. All these bags were stored in the backyard of the plant. The average tonnage of carbon fines recovered monthly was 23.5 tons with a gold grade at 1938 g/t."

"A world class rare metals ore deposit in Africa belongs to a massive granite type poly-metallic pyrochlore-niobium resource. Successful project development in realizing the resource is vital to Africa’s economy and pyrochlore processing technology.The ore properties are quite complex due to the presence of varieties of valuable minerals, fine dissemination and intimate association of minerals and the relative abundance of easy-floatable minerals. The separation of pyrochlore from zircon, calcite and mica is generally considered difficult. Whilst studies have previously been conducted by several independent institutions overseas, no satisfactory process has yet been developed to date for the ore deposit—possibly due to the process designed being too complex; high cost of regents; lower performance.Based on process mineralogy study and extensive testwork, the authors have in recent years developed a new technology—“De-slime—Iron-rejection—Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation—Pyrochlore flotation”. The flow-sheet is characterized by ?1prior removal of slimes and iron minerals; ?2 Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation; and ?3Pyrochlore flotation applying new type of chelating collector GYX3 developed by GZRINM in conjunction with selected regulators and depressants.The process involved in the new technology is simple to implement and facilitates stable operation; the flotation reagent regime is easily adaptable; the cost of main reagent is lower largely because it is easy to manufacture and is environmental friendly. Laboratory test results demonstrated that, for raw ore assaying 0.35% Nb2O5, 0.03% Ta2O5 and 0.45% ZrO2, pyrochlore concentrate grade of >35% Nb2O5 could be obtained with >74% recovery. Meanwhile, the Ta2O5 content in pyrochlore concentrate could be recycled, and ZrO2 recovery >50% could be achieved in zircon concentrate assaying ZrO2>63%—significantly improving the technical-economic indicator. These results were verified in pilot trials of 1.44t/d throughput. Our opinion is that the current lack of R&D investment and implementation capacity places Canada at risk as a future global mining leader A white elephant A burdensome possession; creating more trouble than it is worth. White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.
