The use of cylinder electrowinning cells, such as emew® technology, for the recovery of silver from primary and secondary sources has been growing. In this study, common operating parameters used in silver electrowinning were evaluated for recycling applications. Silver powders were produced from an industrial solution in a laboratory scale emew® cell. A design of experiments was employed to evaluate the effects of HNO3 concentration, iron concentration, current density and solution flow rate on current efficiency, particle size, bulk density, and crystallographic orientation. Current efficiency was affected by each parameter with increasing HNO3 concentration having a strong negative effect, increasing iron concentration and current density having moderate negative effects and increasing flow rate having a positive effect over the ranges examined. Finer particles were produced with increasing current density and decreasing flow rate. Bulk density increased when HNO3 concentration increased. The crystallographic orientation of all powders was dominated by the (111) plane. Increasing flow rate decreased the relative intensity of (200) direction. Based on these observations, silver electrowinning in cylindrical cells can operate at high current efficiency and produce larger powders at low HNO3 concentration, low iron concentration, low current density and high flow rate.

A hypothetical economic model has been developed for diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic using data from recent exploration and mining projects. The model reflects economic conditions applicable to the diamond mining industry in the Canadian Arctic at the present time. The economic model captures pre-production expenditures, production data, and post-production costs. Before- and after-tax cash flows are derived from the data along with the relevant economic criteria. From the corporate perspective, the model provides guidance concerning the minimum size and/or in situ value per tonne requirements of targets being sought in order to ensure economic success and predict exploration and development expenditures. From the government perspective, the model provides an indication of income and mining tax revenues that can be expected from a particular diamond project. The model shows, on average, diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic are expensive to explore for and develop, but are economically robust under the present conditions. They generate great economic return for mining companies and significant amounts of tax revenue for governments. The fact that diamonds can be transported directly from the minesite by air makes them particularly attractive targets for mining companies that operate in the Canadian Arctic.

The scheduling of underground mining activities is a complex task, in particular because of the requirement to satisfy a large number of constraints. A Schedule Optimization Tool (SOT) for underground mine planning is described, and its use for investigating strategic decisions is illustrated by means of a case study. The main components of SOT include: a genetic algorithm, which searches for optimal schedules; guidance, the application of heuristic rules to guide the genetic algorithm; and sliding, which implements just-in-time development. For the case study, SOT is employed to generate schedules at various ore capacities, accounting for the appropriate financials in each schedule evaluation. The case study finds that preliminary scheduling performed before invoking SOT, intended to provide a good starting point for the search, does not ultimately lead to higher value schedules. Two key uses for SOT are identified. A mine planner can save time by using SOT to produce high-value scheduling alternatives. This process ensures a broader investigation of the value that the deposit can yield. Also, SOT can be used to validate strategic and tactical decisions, by scheduling under alternative scenarios. Both uses produce high value schedules conforming to all imposed resource constraints.

"More efficient drilling and blasting techniques have shown measurable improvements in throughput at the Barrick Goldstrike wet grinding mill.A decrease in throughput at the autoclave, due to increasingly hard ore, was identified in early 2002. A team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas participated closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative to ensure that it would address the needs of both groups, with the target of improving throughput in future years, despite the projected harder ores. Plant studies were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting could positively influence throughput. At the Goldstrike mill the greatest opportunity from the D2M initiative is realized on the hardest ore. Grinding throughput for softer ore, <15 kWh/st, can meet or exceed the downstream pressure oxidation requirements. Grinding throughput for harder ore, >15 kWh/st, is limited by the SAG milling capacity. Better fragmentation in the D2M ore, as demonstrated by image analysis, increased throughput 5% to 10% (25 to 50 stph) compared to the standard mining methods.Better fragmentation and a subsequent increase in mill throughput were achieved through the use of:1) Electronic caps for more precision and flexibility, as well as for allowing extremely fast shots.2) Explosives with a higher velocity of detonation (VOD), to provide for improved shock energy.3) Improved distribution of the explosives by decreasing pattern spacing.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Goldstrike Open-Pit group, along with the Process division, began experimenting with novel blasting technology and techniques to improve mill throughput in the spring of 2001. THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

Fine coal aggregation in concentrated coal-water suspensions was studied through steady-state rheological measurements. The wettability of coal particles was modified by dry oxidation of a bituminous coal. The degree of hydrophobicity was monitored using film flotation. The rheological measurements revealed that hydrophobic coal particles aggregate in aqueous suspensions, over a wide pH range, and produce slurries with high yield stresses. As the degree of coal oxidation increases, the coal particles become more hydrophilic and such suspensions exhibit lower yield stresses values. The yield stress values for suspensions prepared from oxidized/hydrophilic coal become a strong function of pH and correlate well with the surface charge as determined through electroacoustic measurements. These results indicate that the yield stress of aqueous suspensions of coal, and hence coal particles aggregation, is strongly affected by the wettability of coal particles.

There appears to a definite trend toward the hoisting of greater tonnages from greater depths. There is every indication that this trend will continue and we feel that improvements in the design, fabrication and installation of mine guides will be of significant importance in the future. The present state of the art in mine-shaft guide systems is reviewed and the parameters required for improvement are derived in this paper. Finally, a proposal is made for a new steel guide system which meets the parameters and is economical to fabricate and install.

"I WOULD LIKE TO SAY how honoured I am that I have been invited to participate in this panel discussion. I have taken the liberty of narrowing my topic somewhat so that instead of speaking on the Sociology of Professions as a whole I will speak on one aspect of it, that is, on Manpower Problems in the Minerals industry of Canada, with some reference to a new social role for the professionals engaged in this industry. This probably means that I will be encroaching on areas covered or to be covered by other speakers, but I hope that when I do so I will do so from a slightly different vantage point. That is, from a sociological perspective rather than from a historical, industrial, business or professional perspective. I plan to divide my discussion into three areas, namely: (i) problems of ownership and control; (ii) environmental problems; and (iii) manpower and recruitment problems. I do not plan nor am I able to provide clear-cut solutions to the various problems I raise under these three headings. Rather, I hope that my discussion of the problems may form the basis for an extended discussion here and elsewhere. Because of the limitations of time, I will only briefly discuss the first two problem areas noted above – (i) ownership and control and (ii) environmental problems - and I plan to concentrate on the manpower issue."

Introduction The greater portion of the information presented in this paper was obtained in the course of an investigation on clay gathering and its cost in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario (1). For assistance in the preparation of the paper, the writer wishes to record his thanks to Mr. Howells Fréchette, Chief of the Ceramics and Road Materials Division of the Mines Branch. Clays are mineral substances consisting essentially of hydrous aluminium silicate which become plastic when wet, fairly hard when dry, and stony masses when burned to a sufficiently high temperature and re-cooled. Shales are clays which have been indurated by the processes of nature. Millions of tons of clays and shales are won yearly for the production of brick, tile, sewer pipe, drain tile, roofing tile, fire-brick, china-ware, wall and floor tile, cement, and a host of other products. There are certain types of clay which, due to their particular qualities and limited distribution, are mined entirely or in part for sale to manufacturers, and are even exported from one country to another, as for example china-clays or kaolins, utilized in the manufacture of white-wares and in the paper industry, due to their consistent whiteness; ball-clays, utilized in the white-ware industry, due to their bonding power and whiteness; slip-clays, used in the stone-ware industry because of their glazing properties, and in the grinding-wheel industry for their burned bonding properties; and suspension-clays, such as are used in the enamelling industry. However, the great bulk of clays and shales won are used in the production of heavy clay products, and the manufacturer of these generally owns and operates his own deposit of raw material.

"During the fall of 2001 a program was initiated to determine the feasibility of improving the metallurgy in the flotation circuit at the Penhorwood Talc Concentrator located near Timmins, Ontario. Bench scale testwork led Plant staff to believe that opportunities existed to improve the flotation performance. Pilot scale testing was then conducted using two vendors and their respective cylindrical type flotation cells to indicate where these opportunities existed.The results of the test program determined that the replacement of the existing flotation circuit (roughers, scavengers and cleaners) with new flotation cells could be economically viable. Justification was due to a reduction in installed horsepower, maintenance costs and a subsequent increase in recovery and throughput while maintaining product quality. Unforeseen benefits included reagent and air reduction, accurate level control as well as improved working conditions due to the removal of the antiquated equipment and ancillaries.This paper will detail the justification, installation and implementation of the new flotation circuit. A special emphasis will explain the hurdles encountered while trying to install and commission the circuit in an operating Concentrator with minimal interruptions to production.INTRODUCTIONThe Penhorwood mine and Concentrator is 28 yrs old and has gone through many ups and downs with different owners, Johns Manville, Steetley Talc and now Luzenac. It has also been expanded twice, with flotation and grinding capacity being added in recent years.All of the concentration is completed at the mine site while the fine grinding takes place in the Timmins micronizing plant.Luzenac’s Philosophy is to be the world leader in Talc production, technology and sales, having about 70% of the current world High Grade talc market."

Abstract- The Key Tuffite is a thick (0.3 m to 6 m) and laterally extensive (-10 km) cherty, sulfide-bearing tuff unit in Archean greenstones in the Matagami mining district in northwestern Quebec. It lies at the contact of the Watson Lake Group and overlying Wabassee Group volcanic rocks, and is host to major Zn-Cu volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. The tuff component is highly altered and its volcanic precursors are not identifiable by petrographie means. The tuff is mixed with a volcanic exhalative component comprising chert, carbonate and sulfides (pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor sphalerite and chalcopyrite). The normative mineral composition of the Key Tuffite is 33% quartz, 28% sulfides, 16% sericite, 8% carbonate, 60Jo chlorite and 9% other minerals. In the vicinity of the Bell Allard and Orchan mines, the precursor tuff components are identified using immobile major and trace elements, as Watson Lake tholeiitic rhyolite (Zr/Y = 1.5 to 3.5, LaN/Ybn. = 1.7 to 2.8, Si02 = 72.5 ± 1.2 wt %, and Wabassee calc-alkaline andesite (Zr/Y =9, LaN/Ybn. = 4 to 8, Si02 = 56% to 65%). Immobile element computation techniques were used to calculate mass additions and losses in the conversion of the tuff to the Key Tuffite. Average net amounts of Fep3 (27% total iron), Si02 (14%), CaO (8%), S and K20 ( + 2%), were added, Na2O was removed (-2.8%), and MgO was over-all unchanged. Total net mass change was +63%, which comprises mainly exhalative additions, but also includes changes owing to hydrothermal alteration of the tuff component.

Brownfield project portfolios are notoriously hard to manage. Day to day there is a constant stream of changes and challenges within projects and across the whole program. When the budget year is over, we?re often left wondering: did the facilities get what they really needed? Did we get value for the capital that was spent? Did we get all the project control and process improvement that we paid for? Great work has been done over the years by the Project Management Institute, Construction Industry Institute and Independent Project Analysis to identify what leads to project success, develop project delivery systems and equip project leaders to perform better. But is attention to individual projects all we need when the job is to deliver a portfolio of many projects? Let?s work with an analogy for a moment, and say a project is like a car, and a project manager the driver. Why can?t all the projects in the portfolio get home in time for dinner? The answer, of course, is that the commute home is about traffic, not just about cars. The road, the signals and the actions of other drivers affect us in our individual cars. Optimizing traffic flow is not about managing individual cars, it is about creating the conditions that allow all traffic to move as smoothly as possible. When we?re stuck in traffic, it doesn?t really matter that we are skilled drivers who know our exact location and our engine?s vital signs. Success with a brownfield portfolio requires more than the equivalent of driver training and a good GPS in every vehicle. Managing the annual budget requires more than tight management of each project. This is not a suggestion to abandon project management in the brownfield multi-projects world; the idea is to find and apply the right tools for delivering a portfolio. Remember, we want confidence in 3 areas: 1. that the facility is getting what it really needs, when it needs it 2. that we are getting value for money invested in facility modifications and improvements, and 3. that our controls are adding value by guiding our improvement What are those portfolio tools? The job they have to do is distinct from project-level thinking: ? Create a clear and balanced business pull for project ideas ? Maintain a respectable plan for fiscal, resource and business control ? Organize the work into a steady flow ? Manage the nature and timing of value-driven project substitutions and priority changes ? Focus on overall business value added and best use of resources ? Repurpose the projects organization into being the way the facility gets improved

"Aiming at the problems of the existing calculation methods for the support pressures of shallow tunnels in layered jointed rock strata, by using OAT (orthogonal array testing strategy) and DEM (distinct element method), 12 influencing factors including the thickness of the weathered overburden, and the states of the rock joints were considered. Then, the classification of the loosening zone was analysized. On this basis, by using the DEA (data envelopment analysis) theory, quantitative analysis on the influencing factors was conducted. By analyzing the influence of the key factors, a prediction formula of the boundary of the ringent trumpet-shaped loosening zone was established. According to principles of stress transformation, the formula of support pressures of the loosening zone which could considering the key factors were deduced. Finally, a practical case was introduced and studied to verify the proposed method.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, various urban subway tunnels are increasingly carried out through jointed rock strata in many cities. Rock masses are discontinuous mediums with fissures, fractures, joints, bedding planes, and faults. The frequency of joints, their orientation with respect to the engineering structures, and the roughness of the joint have a significant importance from the stability point of view. However, there is a lack of understanding about the influence of the joints on the stability of tunnels. Therefore, how to measure the degree of the joints’ influence is a problem that needs to be solved.For the calculation of the support pressures, until now, many research results were focused on soil ground (Bierbäumer 1913; Terzaghi, 1943; Peck, 1969; Sabatini et al., 1999). In terms of site tests and model indoor tests, by measuring strut loads and calculating earth pressure based on strut spacing, the results proposed by Peck (1969) and Tschebotarioff (1973) have been widely used in practice for designing excavation support systems under sand (drained) and clay (undrained) soil conditions. Note that, it is unclear whether these findings could be extended to rock strata. For numerical simulations, how to simulate the states of the rock joints is a key problem that needs to be solved."

Mining mobile equipment is becoming larger in order to lower operation cost and increase productivity; however, their performance characteristics are often limited by the tire capabilities. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of tire research, the lack of comprehensive knowledge on tire performance characteristics impedes the advancement of off-the-road tires. Longer haul roads, and a severe operating environment make tires more vulnerable than other components of a vehicle. Furthermore, due to a limited availability of large tires, mines are facing shortages. Thus mines and tire service companies are keen to improve tire performance, extend tire life and hence lower operating costs. This paper reviews the relevant tire performance research, analyzes tire interactions with the surrounding environment, tire maintenance practices and operational issues using a case study based on data collected during an ongoing project with Fountain Tire.

"The development of industry and intensive use of natural resources leads to a significant decrease in the share of reserves of rich ores, deposits of which have nearly all been exploited. Large amounts of displaced rock mass are accumulated, significant emissions of gas and dust from mining, dust from dumps and tailing pits, ingress of chemicals and toxic elements in surface and groundwater all can have negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health. Especially dangerous is the impact in Arctic regions with extreme climate conditions. The maintenance of overburden dumps and tailings dams requires significant capital and material costs. In this paper, some mining enterprises of the Murmansk region, in the Russian Federation, consider the environmental problems of the industry and propose some solutions.INTRODUCTIONThe safety of environment during the extraction and processing of minerals is a very acute problem throughout the whole world. The problem acquires a specific character in the Russian Federation. There, rather poor minerals, often existing in unconventional forms and including several mineral components are processed. The Russian mineral base has a specific geographical location; most of the deposits under operation are located in the Subarctic or Arctic regions, as well as in Siberia and in the Far East. Vast amounts of rock waste and tailings pose serious economic and ecological problems in mining regions. The operation of overburden heaps and tailings requires considerable capital and material costs. The dumps withdraw vast lands from potential commercial use. Large amounts of mined rock disturb the existing geological balance; emissions of gas and dust which accompany the mining operations, dusting of waste heaps and tailings, emissions of reagents and heavy metals into natural surface and ground waters all can produce negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health."

"Viceroy Resource Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. has recently developed the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine 55km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797000oz) of gold. Ore processing employs the heap leach technology using run of mine ore. 1996 highlights included construction of 158,000 m2 of leach pad, placing 1.9 million tonnes of ore at a grade of 1.46 gpt on to the leach pad, construction and successful commissioning of the ADR plant, and pouring of the first gold bar on November 15th.Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon where winter site temperatures routinely reach -45 C for extended periods.IntroductionFollowing a comprehensive governmental and public review of the proposed project, a Class A Yukon Water license was issued in August, 1995. Construction started in 1995 and leaching commenced in October 1996. The Brewery Creek Mine is in Yukon, the home of the Klondike Gold Rush nearly 100 years ago. This is the only part of Canada not glaciated in the Wisconsin advance so there is oxide ore resulting from about 80,000 years of weathering -unique in Canada. Discontinuous permafrost is present on site and has required special consideration in the design. Winter temperatures dip below minus 50 C, demanding an approach to mining and leaching that is different than in more temperate climates.Project DescriptionThe mine comprises 8 shallow, largely oxidized gold deposits along a 7km corridor. An 8 year mining program will extract 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797,000 oz) of gold. The strip ratio will be 1.35: 1. Overall gold recovery is projected at 78%. There will be 2.3 million tonnes of ore placed on the pad annually, with an average of 2.57 tonnes (83, 000 oz) of gold recovered per year. Because of the cold winters, the mine will operate approximately 210 days per year, while the leaching process will operate on a year round basis. Run of mine ore is placed on the heap 150 days per year. The recovery process utilizes conventional sodium cyanide leaching , carbon adsorption, caustic desorption, and on-site smelting. Peak employment during mining is 145 and winter staff is reduced to 45."

"Although the centennial of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converting process has recently been celebrated, the technology has essentially not changed much since its inception. PS converting is used extensively in the Cu, Ni and PGM industry to remove iron and sulphur from a molten matte phase. A typical PS converting process would use low pressure air supplied by a blower to bubble air through the molten bath. This bubbling injection regime is inherently inefficient from a process and energy consideration. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Brimacombe and co-workers demonstrated at both laboratory and plant scales that sonic injection (jetting regime) into copper or nickel converters could reduce or eliminate the above hindrances characteristic of PS converting. Since then, in spite of these successes, very little industrial applications have made headway in the converting process of non-ferrous metal mattes on a commercial scale. As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction program (process efficiency), Lonmin Platinum decided to conduct a full scale industrial evaluation of sonic injection using air only to establish if punchless, high efficiency sonic injection was feasible in its small 3.05 × 4.57 m converters (10’ × 15’). A plant trial was run for four weeks in one of its three converters. This paper discusses the plant demonstration with a focus on the experience acquired by Lonmin together with the key learnings from the trials. Reference will also be made to the commercial aspects of a full scale implementation of sonic injection in all three converters in the smelter. The quantity of data available and the rate at which we access such data are rapidly increasing. Electronic data capture systems, fleet management systems and a host of other technological advancements have created a constant stream of real-time, tactical data. However, are we taking advantage of this data? Are we converting data into useful information to aid in efficient decision-making? Mining operations are struggling with ?information overload?, finding it difficult to extract the benefits from vast stores of data. Without the necessary tools to facilitate a data filtering and information reporting process, most operations revert to old practises such as re-entering data into multiple spreadsheet reports. As a result, the ability to make effective use of data still eludes many mining operations. Some operations have taken audacious steps to rectify this situation. The De Beers Venetia mine in South Africa has implemented an integrated mining information technology solution that transforms their data into practical, usable information allowing staff and management to make decisions that improve efficiencies and reduce costs. In the absence of quantitative justification or ROI, De Beers took a risk in implementing change. Today, they are realising the benefits. This paper will unearth the information technology issues that surfaced during the Venetia implementation, then identify the benefits De Beers has obtained from deploying an integrated mining information technology solution at the Venetia mine.
