THE Twin "J" Mine, operated by Twin "J" Mines, Limited, represents an amalgamation of the old Lenora, Tyee, and Richard III mines (see Figure 1) on mount Sicker, eight miles by road, northwesterly, from the city of Duncan, on Vancouver island. These mines produced 253,000 tons of copper-gold ore between 1898 and 1909 (see Table I). During the more recent period of production from these properties, July, 1943, to May, 1944, Twin ?J? Mines, Limited, mined and milled ore with values mainly in copper and zinc, and minor values in gold, silver, and lead. Figures are not available for this later production. Field work at the property was started by the writer in 1941 and continued in 1943 and 1944.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). The Steel Company of Canada, utilizing the S-L process, has produced partially and highly reduced pellets for use in the blast furnace. Experimental blast furnace tests, using reduced pellet burdens, have been carried out. The changes in production rate, fuel rate and general performance of both the S-L and the blast furnace processes are indicated. Introduction T HE ore burdens for a blast furnace may be improved in two ways: chemically, by concentrating the ore to a high degree of purity; and physically, by agglomerating or closely sizing the ore particles. Today, many b1ast furnaces are charged with closely sized agglomerates, some of which contain upwards of 66 per cent iron. The further improvement of these burdens by chemical concentration may, in many instances, be uneconomic due to the large losses of iron that occur during processing. Assuming that it would be possible to reject all of the gangue minerals, the maximum level of concentration of iron in the hematitic ores would be only about 70 per cent.

The reactive precipitation of ferrihydrite was studied in a laboratory semi-batch precipitator, where a highly concentrated sodium hydroxide solution was fed into an iron nitrate solution. Instantaneous hydrolysis of iron[III] takes place when the two reagents are mixed generating supersaturation, and leading to immediate precipitation of ferrihydrite via a primary nucleation mechanism then followed by limited crystallite growth to 3 to 7nm. A mathematical model of the semi-batch laboratory precipitator was used to simulate the pH responses during the precipitation of ferrihydrite at different reagent feed rates. The model comprised of interconnected compartments of averaged hydrodynamic conditions, incorporating physically meaningful turbulent mixing time constants. The precipitation process is described by the solute concentration conservation equation incorporating a postulated ferrihydrite primary nucleation model. It was found that the semi-batch precipitator model predicted the experimental pH response reasonably well. The experimental results demonstrated that the reagent feed rate has a critical effect on the course of the precipitation of ferrihydrite, i.e. it is a rate determining step given the fast hydrolysis and precipitation kinetics.

The Lake Cinch deposit occurs in the Tazin gneisses on the footwall side of the Black Bay fault. Ore is localized by two faults, the Main Ore fault and the Cracking-stone River fault, occurring in shoots along the former and on tension fractures between the two faults. Faulting leading to the localization of the deposit is analyzed in detail and tied into the regional pattern. Pitchblende, the chief radioactive mineral, is investigated by X-ray and found to be of very small particle size. The relation-ships of U, Fe and Mn in the ore are established quantitatively, and Fe is found to bear a catalytic relation to U. The deposit is classed as belonging to Lindgren's mesothermal class. Mineralization is attributed to carbonate solutions, and the uranium is believed to have been trans-ported in the hexavalent state as the uranyl tricarbonate ion; analogy is drawn to a recently developed hydro-metallurgical technique for the production of uranium dioxide. Recent research on the development of erosion resistant coatings has been directed to the finite element modelling of the behavior of coating and substrate, and their interface under the impact of eroding particles. The approach presented in this paper is based on advanced computer simulation techniques using ABAQUS/Explicit to investigate stress and strain at the surface and at the coating/substrate interface of multilayer coatings under single particle impact. It was found previously that solid particle erosion mechanisms are predominantly governed by the kinetic energy of the impacting particles. However, recent modelling efforts revealed that effects of various material models could be also significant. Therefore, different material models representing relevant coating and substrate properties were investigated and the effects of these models on the coating/substrate response were studied. Particularly, differences between elastic, elastic-plastic and brittle cracking model responses were assessed.

Roasting processes are divided into several elementary mechanisms, any of which could be significant or pre-dominant in a particular roast. The elementary processes considered in-elude beat transfer, gas-solid inter-actions with accompanying mass transfer between the bed and furnace atmosphere, vapor phase transport processes in solid-solid interactions, and solid phase diffusion processes. Examples are chosen of processes in which one of these mechanisms pre-dominates and some recently obtained data is presented to support the existence and significance of these mechanisms. Proposals are also made for future research in these areas, and for utilizing the information in the improvement of roaster capacities’ OASTING of ores as a preparative treatment for smelting or leaching has been practiced for so long that its origin has been lost in antiquity, but little has been under-stood of its basic nature until fair-ly recent times. Recycling of e-scrap is often performed by utilizing a pyrometallurgical Cu smelting process. Several valuable metals, including precious metals, can be efficiently recovered through the Cu smelting process. However, recovery of Sn is quite difficult because it is distributed in slag during the smelting process. Sn is used as solder and plating in electronic devices, and its recycling will be more important in the future. In light of this background, a pretreatment process that can extract Sn directly and selectively from e-scrap was developed in this study. The proposed Sn extraction process involves alkaline leaching using iodate ions, IO 3, as an oxidizing agent. We conducted leaching experiments for Sn, Sn-Ag-Cu alloy solder, and Cu, and the effective dissolution of Sn was confirmed. In principle, the electrodeposition of Sn from the leach solution and regeneration of IO3 are possible by a subsequent electrolysis process. The results obtained in this study suggest that the proposed leaching process can be an effective and useful pretreatment for Cu-smelting-based e-scrap recycling. INTRODUCTION Electronic scrap (e-scrap), including waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), is one of the fastest growing waste treatment streams in the global urban environment. E-scrap contains numerous valuable metallic elements, including Cu, Sn, and precious metals, in rich quantity. Furthermore, some metals and other materials contained in e- scrap are hazardous to human health and the environment when they are not properly managed. The recycling of e- scrap is therefore a major concern in terms of resource supply and waste treatment, and it has been performed by many companies using a variety of methods.

"THE last two years have been years of recession or, perhaps, years of marking time, depending upon whether the observer is a pessimist or an optimist. There has been a slackening in the industrial tempo that has been reflected in many ways in the national economy. As one of the chief barometers of economic health, the consumption and supply of energy reflect this slowing up.These same two years have also seen significant changes in the relation between the sources of energy. In periods of declining demand, it has happened in the past that coal, as the basic or residual source of energy, has shown the effects to a greater extent than the other energies. In these two years, however, in addition to this usual effect, there has been the acceleration in the Joss of market to diesels in the railway consumption category and the continuing decline in domestic consumption. The story of these years is presented in the statistical tables that form the foundation of this paper. Statistics, particularly in the form of tables, are rather dry and are sometimes difficult to follow but the overall developments are illustrated by graphs which present a more striking picture."

This paper considers mineral processing in zero gravity dry environments typical of asteroids or comets. The electro-dynamic separation technique using pneumatic flow systems is explored. Pneumatic delivery of solids is used because of extreme temperature changes and the possible scarcity of water. The present earth-based process and how it can be modified for these conditions is examined.

Most hydrothermal gold deposits contain quartz with fluid inclusions that record composition and temperature of the mineralizing event. Quartz has strong chemical and mechanical resistances to weathering and abrasion. Hence, quartz fragments occurring on weathered surfaces or in till cover have the potential to be used for gold exploration as far as we know what is the signification of the volatile content of the fluid inclusions for gold mineralization. In this perspective, fluid inclusions were analyzed in pure quartz by solid-probe mass spectrometry from gold deposits hosted in the Archean Abitibi (Canada) and Paleoproterozoic Birimian (Western Africa) belts. This approach provides the relative abundance of volatiles from families of fluid inclusions decrepitating at specific temperatures (Td). Fluids in gold deposits are aqueous-dominated with CO2 and minor H2S in accordance with their fundamental role as gold-ligands (H2S) and for pH-buffering (CO2) of the gold-bisulfide solubility. However, there is no correlation between CO2 and H2S contents of fluid inclusions with the gold grade of the samples. This suggests that trapped fluids represent a marginal portion of the fluid history recorded by the veins. However, in barren quartz veins away from known mineralization CO2 or H2S are commonly absent. Wide ranges in H2O Td from 250 to 450°C and CO2-H2O Td offsets are common, indicating phase separation. The content of other volatiles seems to be more dependent on the geological setting. Helium content may suggest proximity to a crustal-rooted fault, a critical parameter for gold mineralization. Methane and especially C2H6 appear to be indicative of fluid buffering by organic-rich material such as graphitic-shale. These rocks may provide an important primary gold reservoir from sedimentary metal-rich pyrite. Nitrogen-bearing fluids may be related to a magmatic component but can also be derived from organic-rich sedimentary rocks. For gold exploration, quartz containing CO2- H2S-bearing fluid inclusions and having H2O-CO2-Td offsets within 250 - 450°C has strong vectoring potential.

Introduction The Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is the principal source of ore for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. Current production amounts to about 2,500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore a year. With approximately 1,600,000 feet of percussion drilling and 700,000 feet of diamond drilling being carried on each year, any improvements in drilling practice are important. Testing of new equipment and drill bits is a major function of the Testing Department at the mine. Tungsten carbide bits have been the subject of many tests since 1947 and have been used in operations since 1948. This paper details with the methods of testing and gives comparative data on performance and costs for tungsten carbide bits as compared to steel bits. Operational use of tungsten carbide bits started in April, 1948, and the extent of application has increased considerably since that time. The scale of employment is illustrated in Table I, which also shows other statistics on the use of carbide bits. Up to the present time eighteen types of carbide bits or tipped steel, as made by six different manufacturers, have been tested. In general, one supplier's bits have been used in operations, but some large-scale operational tests have been carried out with other types. The types tried are shown in Table II. To date they have been, the subject of 33 tests, covering the destruction of 804 bits over an observed footage of 42,586 feet.

The history and experience of early companies in the Islands is illustrated by the typical transactions of Trans-Western from 1959 to date. Trans-Western had entered into farmout agreements with companies strong enough to carry out at least the required minimum exploratory work and then such development as might be warranted. The farmee companies were required to make deposits to guarantee work performance during the first period of validity, i.e. the first 3 years of the 12-year life of the permits, and at the rate of 5 cents per acre. At that time, a good deal of geology was available, as a result of extensive exploration that had been carried on by the Geological Survey of Canada and other geological enterprises, with field parties travelling over and camping on all of those Islands. Trans-Western's farmees then selected, from Trans-Western's priority on 13.5 million acres, what they believed were the lands most prospective of producing large oil and gas discoveries, and, having the right to trim off acreage which they considered less prospective, thereby reducing the acreage of Trans-Western and its farmees to in excess of 5.5 million acres. The farmees then commenced a 3-year program carrying out geological exploration to the required minimum of 5 cents per acre, and with some permanent and many mobile camps.

Underground mining of minerals is becoming an increasingly complicated technological and ecological problem. It can be explained both by worsening of geological conditions of mining and by a specific character of mining industry, which, in contrast to processing branches of industry, intrudes into one of principal components of the nature ? the Earth's interior. At a traditional organization of mining industry, the entire volume of the produced rock mass is brought to the Earth's surface, where valuable components are extracted. This entails not only power over expenditure for long-distance transfer (especially in the vertical direction) of the waste rock forming a part of the original mineral, but also the formation of huge volumes of worked-out spaces. The latter leads (nature cannot stand emptiness!) to an irreversible development of geomechanical processes of shifting of overlying rock masses resulting in an irreparable damage of all surface structures located on the territory undermined by deep mining. Owing to their high productivity combined with low power consumption and instrumental compactness, novel bifunctional technological processes of minerals dressing successfully solve the problem of rock mass processing in underground conditions with subsequent operative disposal of final tailings of such underground dressing in the worked-out space. Besides, an integration of two processes into one is achieved, for example, a decrease in the rock mass coarseness with a simultaneous precise separation of valuable and waste components.

Weak metal prices, declining head grade, and increased operational costs are forcing many open pit mining companies to look to their balance sheets for significant cost reductions in order to remain competitive. Maintenance continues to represent a significant proportion of the total operating costs in the mining industry. Compared with the other major cost components of the mining process very little effort has gone into maintenance optimization. The potential payoff from maintenance optimization on the cash cost of the commodity is enormous. A large percentage of these costs are incurred in unscheduled maintenance events, which typically cause serious disruptions to the production process. These maintenance induced production losses can be a significant contributor to the overall operating costs. A structured proactive maintenance approach using the latest advances in technology can achieve dramatic cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. Remote condition monitoring technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, with a host of new tools becoming available to assist mine operators in improving their maintenance operations. These tools have capabilities such as: remote real-time vital signs and performance monitoring, alarm/event handling, trend analysis, and maintenance workflow management. When these monitoring tools are used in conjunction with a mine management system the vital signs data can be integrated and associated with maintenance history, predictive maintenance data, operational information, and geographical information. This integrated approach to the management of vital maintenance data will help shift the mobile equipment maintenance paradigm from reactive to proactive. This paper will introduce a proactive approach to the management of the maintenance process and the tools required to facilitate this process.

This paper describes the significant advantages and improvements in operational availability, reduced breakdowns, and overall cost reductions that can be achieved through the application of a Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) program, including Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and Equipment Health Monitoring (EHM), in a mine environment. It uses a case study to illustrate the essential elements that constitute the basic requirements to establish such programs. This CBM case study analyzed the Load-Haul- Dump (LHD) vehicle sub-systems and their dominant failure modes, as a precursor to the development of condition indicators. The case study describes a disciplined process to enable condition indicator development and qualification in support of a CBM program. The identified condition indicators vary from readily applicable off-the-shelf monitoring systems and techniques, through to "leading edge" technologies that require further research and development. The paper also explores the developments that have been made in the combination of expert system software associated with modern computer based control systems, and the availability of "intelligent? sensor technology that complement the control system capability.

"Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is at present B,C.'s only asbestos mining company, and has been actively engaged in the management and operation of the Cassiar Mine since the early 1950's. The Cassiar operations are located between 3,500' and 6,600' elevation in a secluded mountainous area of northern B.C., approximately 100 miles by road southwest of Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory. Climatic conditions in this area range from mild warm in the summer, to extremely cold during the long winter period.The minesite itself is located over a mile above sea level at the top of McDame Mountain, where year round 24 hours per day miners extract the chrysotile ore from the surrounding waste by standard open pit techniques. The ore body dips into the mountain at about a 45° angle, and as the mining progresses, larger stripping ratios are required. Waste to ore ratio this year will be more than 10 to l whereas only a few years ago ratios of 3 or 4 to l were possible. After drilling, blasting, and loading by shovel onto trucks, the asbestos ore is transported to the Primary Crushing Plant for crushing prior to transport by aerial tramway more than three miles to the Concentrator and Mill in the valley below, where the fibre is extracted from the barren host rock serpentine and milled into numerous grades for shipment to asbestos users round the world. The major air usage is associated with the milling process, presently requiring over 500,000 CFM, with future requirements expected to exceed 840,000 CFM by the end of the decade."

"Aggregation, i.e., the tendency of particles to cluster, can be expected to influence flotation selectivity. In this paper, a method of measuring aggregation is introduced and used to conduct plant surveys.Aggregation is measured using settling rate and turbidity converted to an aggregation index (AI) where 0 corresponds to most dispersed and 1 to most aggregated over the range of conditions tested, normally pH. Surveys of Cu and Zn flotation stages at four concentrators showed the AI increased significantly above pH 9. The metal ions identified in the process waters, principally Ca and Mg, were tested to determine which might be responsible. The presence of Mg was found to be the most important. In doping tests, Mg was shown to cause significant variation in AI over the pH range of 9 to 12.The impact of Mg was restricted to pH > 9. Over this pH range, Mg forms a range of hydroxy species, including Mg(OH)2 precipitates. An aggregation mechanism associated with these precipitates, electrostatic bridging, is suggested. Possible problems and opportunities in flotation practice arising from the findings are discussed."

"Highland Valley Copper recently installed a semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveyor system designed to feed both the Bethlehem and Lornex concentrators with a feed averaging 120000 tonnes per day. The system installed with a rated capacity of 12000 tonnes per hour is the highest capacity hard rock semi-mobile crushing and conveying system currently in existence.The system is designed in a manner that the crushers can be moved easily as the pit is developed in depth with conveyors extending deeper into the pit, and conveyors being moved radially from a surge pile located at the rim of the ultimate pit as the pit increases in size laterally.The system consists of two 6000 tph, 60 by 89 Krupp semimobile crushers feeding two moveable 4500 hp, 60 in. conveyors, 1.25 km long feeding a 7500 tonne live storage surge pile. Two 96 in. belt feeders installed in reclaim tunnels under the pile feed two parallel 4500 hp, 60 in. conveyors, 1.25 km long on a 12 per cent uphill grade to the two existing Lornex plant feed conveyors. A third 96 in. belt feeder, under the pile, feeds a 60 in. conveyor, loading trucks hauling crushed ore to the Bethlehem mill.A description will be given: (1) of the system's design features in which climatic extremes, operating, and maintenance characteristics were of primary importance; (2) of the way the system was constructed from components purchased internationally on an extremely tight construction schedule; and (3) of the way the system has operated during the first few months in operation during which time it demonstrated that it has met various design criteria."
