New "clean technologies" to treat mining and metallurgical effluents containing dissolved metals have been successfully applied at mine sites in North America and Asia, treating water flows up to 24,000 m3/day. These clean technologies offer significant benefits compared to conventional alternatives and provide a sustainable solution that eliminates residual waste sludge, improves water conservation, generates revenues from wastewater, and delivers overall improvements to the environment. This paper will profile these technologies, and provide best practice case study examples of their application at mining operations, including data for water chemistry, flows, water quality, capital and operating costs, and life cycle costs of treatment.

Studies on the properties of rocks heated to high temperatures are rather rare. Such research is occasionally conducted for example; in areas around nuclear power plants. The national Polish coal gasification (underground coal gasification, or UCG) project has, however, forced the analysis of the geomechanical properties of heated rocks in the vicinity of a designed geo-reactor. Ukrainian experience with UCG show that rocks up to 2 m from the burned coal seam be at a temperature > 600ºC. Such a high temperature will undoubtedly influence their physical properties. This paper presents studies on the strength and deformation properties of carboniferous rocks in the Upper Silesian region, where the UCG process is planned. Three types of rocks were tested: claystones, mudstones and sandstones. Laboratory tests of these rocks evaluated compressive strength, elastic modulus and weight loss. An evaluation of the results of the tests comparing the thermal conductivity of rocks and their specific thermal capacity was then carried out. All of the rocks studied were heated to 300, 600 and 1000ºC, and also evaluated at room temperature. This procedure shed new light upon the behavior of heated rocks in relation to their distance from the designed geo-reactor. An on-line visualization technique and methodology was developed to investigate the role of fine sphalerite (< 10 um) aggregation in flotation. The images of particle aggregates under different operating conditions were recorded and analyzed. The effect of impeller design on particle aggregation was demonstrated. This difference was not mainly due to the energy input into the system, but due to the resultant hydrodynamic conditions created by the impeller and their effect on particle interactions. The recorded image showed that adding fine silica (- 5 um) did not interfere with fine sphalerite aggregation, thereby showing no effect on the sphalerite recovery. Effect of the enlarged aggregate size on increasing flotation recovery was confirmed. Although Malvern Mastersizer produced consistently lower estimates of aggregate size than those by the image analysis, both methods responded to the changes in operating conditions in the similar trend. It was shown from this study that on-line visualization technique is a powerful tool for studying fine particle aggregation and morphology in the context of diagnosis for the flotation separation.

The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

"Several metal sulfide minerals (such as copper, zinc and iron), generally abundant in precious metal-containing ores, are known to dissolve during the cyanidation process. These unwanted reactions consume a significant amount of cyanide and oxygen, which is required for the extraction of gold and silver. Leaching kinetics of sulfide minerals are very fast in contact with oxygenated cyanide solutions. Therefore, the solution quickly becomes charged with oxidation products that are mostly metal ions, metallo-cyanide complexes, metal oxides and other sulfur species including thiocyanate, sulfides, polysulfides, thiosulfate, sulfites, sulfates, etc. COREM’s Extractive Metallurgy team has been conducting a research program on the improvement of the gold cyanidation process. As a part of this program, the current study aims to investigate the effect of certain operating parameters on the reactions involved during pre-oxidation and cyanidation. The effect of pre-treatment under ozone was investigated using an industrial pulp recreated from process water (charged with thiocyanates) and homogenized flotation tailings material from Agnico Eagle's LaRonde mine. In terms of mechanisms, the ozone treatment provides a complete deactivation of the material surface (characterized by EDTA extraction) and the solution (characterized by Ionic chromatography). This resulted in a lower reactivity of sulfide minerals that led to substantial gains in terms of consumption of cyanide and thiocyanate formation during the cyanidation process. The ozone-pre-treatment edges the classical pre-oxidation treatment (such as oxygen, hydrogen peroxides, etc) providing a quicker deactivation of the sulfide matrix and higher reagent savings in subsequent cyanidation process.INTRODUCTIONThe presence of sulfur in the process of gold leaching by cyanidation is a major drawback to optimizing the reagents consumption with suitable operating conditions. The coexistence of sulfide mineral species, such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite or sphalerite along with the gold-bearing ore have, indeed, a negative impact on the extraction of precious metals by cyanidation (Bayat et al., 2003), (Azizi et al., 2010). These minerals are known to dissolve with cyanide under alkaline conditions and release in the slurry different kinds of sulfide by-products like polysulfides, thiosel, sulfite and sulfate (Seal II & Hammarstrom, 2003) (Breuer et al., 2008a), (Marsden & House, 2006) (Ghasemian Langeroudi et al., 2013). Once these sulfide by-products are released in solution they react with cyanide to form thiocyanate (Marsden & House, 2006) (Breuer et al., 2008b). The consequence of the dissolution of these cyanicides, is a significant increase in cyanide consumtpion as well as a slow-down of gold extraction."

"The existing methods of block diagram manipulation and vanishing variable for flowsheet simplification used in coal and mineral processing circuit evaluation and optimization cannot be easily implemented on digital computer.The signal flowgraph technique is proposed to represent and simplify determination of the relationship between intermediate or end variable and the feed in the flowsheet. Typical and existing circuits are used to demonstrate the application of the proposed technique which can easily be implemented on digital computers.IntroductionRecently there has been much interest in the analysis and optimization of coal and mineral processing circuits to assist in the pre diction of coal and mineral processing plant performance. The block diagram and the vanishing variable were introduced and utilized in the analysis of plant flowsheet. Although the block diagram approach is useful, it requires manual manipulation of the circuit block diagram which may present difficulties in the situation of complex circuits. Moreover, it may not be easy to implement on a digital computer.In this paper, the signal flowgraph technique is proposed to represent the circuit flowsheet and to simplify the determination of relationships between intermediate or end variables (fractional mass) and the feed for any coal and for any mineral processing circuit comprising size and density separators. These relationships are utilized in the analysis and/or optimization of the circuit. The proposed technique is illustrated by considering typical and existing circuits."

"The McLaughlin Mine owned by Homestake Mining Company is located 70 miles northeast of San Francisco in California's coastal range. The mine began operations in February of 1985. The mill currently processes 3,000 short-ton per day of sulfide ore that has an average grade of 0.15 ounces of gold per ton, plus another 3,000 tons per day in a newly completed oxide circuit. Annual production from the mine totals over 200,000 ounces.The sulfide ore extraction process involves three basic steps, grinding, oxidation of sulfide minerals in an autoclave, and cyanide leaching for recovery of gold in a carbon-in-pulp circuit. This process, which incorporates a new technology where oxidation of sulfide minerals is conducted prior to cyanide leaching to facilitate gold recovery, was successful from start-up. However, limitation in the grinding mills initially limited sulfide tonnage throughput.This paper discusses modifications made in the grinding circuit, both mechanical and operational, to resolve it deficiency. The SAG mill, in particular, was unable to achieve design tonnage initially and proved to be most troublesome. Complications occurred due to the hardness and variability of ore being processed, short component life, and a lifter /liner arrangement that had to be tailored to the particular circumstances at McLaughlin. IntroductionHomestake Mining Company's McLaughlin Mill, located in northern California, was designed to process a refractory gold ore at a rate of 3,000 tpd to render the ore amenable to cyanidation. Seven years transpired between discovery of the near-surface ore body in 1978 and the February, 1985 plant start-up. Development of the McLaughlin mill and open pit gold mine hinged on the use of autoclave technology to achieve design recoveries."

Coal and coal-bed methane are valuable energy resources. If they can be extracted simultaneously and safely, the triple purposes of mine safety production, new energy resource supply and environmental protection can be fulfilled. After mining, the mining induced fissure distribution feature and methane delivery behavior in overlying strata were closely related to the relieved methane degasification. Using physical simulation and numerical simulation, it was explained that the distribution feature of mining induced fissure was the Elliptic Paraboloid Zone (EPZ) in three-dimensional space. Based on the key stratum theory, the types, parameters, characteristics and dynamic evolution behavior of the mining induced fissure EPZ were analyzed. Applying environmental fluid mechanics and the mass transfer theory, the relieved methane floating-diffusion equation of the EPZ was established, and the corresponding transport process was analyzed. Using the field practice of relieved methane degasification in Tianchi Coal Mine, it explained that the mining induced fissure EPZ was the storage and delivery area of relieved methane. The degasification effect will thus be useful if the drainage system is laid in the EPZ. Such studies can provide the theoretical basis and technical support for the safe simultaneous extraction of coal and methane.

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. In a cool mine, tapping high-pressure lines through reducing valves lowers the temperature beyond remedy. It is the writer&apos;s suggestion that, for low-pressure work, law-pressure air ,should be generated in a compressor installed underground adjacent to the work, and that the jacket-water of the compressor should be utilised for re-heating purposes. Such a system of compressed air distribution, designed especially for service in cool mines, is described in the following notes. The suggested system includes a three-wire pole line from the sub-station to the opening nearest to the working face, with a cable connection extending to the latter from the openings; an electrical centrifugal unit; a reservoir excavated in the ground; and a distribution line, re-heated by jacket-water. As regards the reservoir, it may be pointed out that in many mines there are blind or abandoned tunnels that could be used for the purpose. The centrifugal type of compressed air machine is a comparatively new departure, and it was formerly considered that such a machine, operating at less than 1,000 kilowatts per unit, would be commercially impracticable. At the present time, however, these machines are being built in Europe for as little as 400 kilowatts per unit, and as much as 110 lb. per sq. inch pressure. One advantage which these centrifugal machines have over other types is that they may be driven by plain induction motors, without the help of special starters-a consideration of the first importance where the electrical regulations are severe.

In selecting mobile mining equipment, factors including availability, useful economic life, maintenance and operating costs, and spare parts availability are considered. Given these factors, trucks and shovels with different capacities are selected. Optimizing equipment for pit and hillside quarry cases, where 8% and 10% ramps are commonly in use, were examined; the effect of other mining activities such as drilling and blasting on unit cost were considered. In principle, 20 m to 25 m high benches should be economical for downhill haulage, and 7 m to 10 m low benches economical for uphill haulage. However, practice of both mining styles favours 10 m to 15 m bench heights. Hence, the analysis here was carried out with the field experience bench height range. In the study, a truck-shovel optimization was based on the movement of 5 to 20 million cubic metres (in 2.5 million cubic metre increments) of overburden stripping at the Eynez open pit mine in the Soma region of Turkey. The outcome showed that low-capacity shovels were unfavourable due to high production expectations. High-capacity shovels were also unfavourable due to health and safety issues causing high instances of impact vibration on trucks during the loading cycle and a decrease in foreseeable unit lifetimes. The number of shovel passes required to load a truck ranged from three to six. Trucks with high-capacity bodies were deemed uneconomical due to high investment and operating costs.

The most expensive unit operation in the beneficiation of ores is grinding. The correct design of the grinding circuit is crucial to prevent unnecessary use of energy. Proper design and evaluation of SAG grinding circuits require the specific grinding energy, which is determined experimentally. The most common tests in SAG grinding are the Drop Weight Test, from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center (JKMRC) in Australia, and the SAG Power Index, from MinnovEX Technologies in Canada. The application of these tests to the same ore sample commonly produces different results. The work reported here aims at comparing the application of these two tests in the determination of the specific grinding energy for sulfide copper ores from Sequeirinho and Sossego deposits, Sossego Project, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD, in Para state, Brazil.

Process water from production of concentrates in Meydook copper sulfide mine is transferred to the 8.3 million m3 tailings dam and a water retention pond after initial thickening. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals, sulfate, and TDS and decrease in pH as well as seepage into the aquifers have been the concern of the regulatory agencies since the start of activities. In this paper the results of a 6-month monitoring program from 4 wells are presented. The wells were located approximately 1.5 km from downstream of tailing dam (0.4 km from water retention pond) as well as upstream background well (2.28 km from water retention pond and 1.27 km from tailings dam). The objective was to study possible effect of accumulated tailings on the groundwater resources. Water levels in sampled wells were on average between 20 and 40 m. Results showed high levels of lead (5 ppb), copper (0.17-0.46 ppm) and selenium (73.1- 29.1 ppb). High levels of selenium and lead were partly due to natural geological settings of the area with high levels present in unaffected soils in the vicinity including water wells of villages upstream of mining operations. High copper levels were attributed to both mining operations as well as deposition from particulate air deposition onto the soil and transport to ground water by rain.

"There are two main issues stemming from Vallée’s (2002) comments on Dominy et al. (2001b). First, he raises the importance of quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) during resource estimation programs, and second, he indicates that the resolution and understanding of continuity (grade and geological) issues are paramount in the classification of resources. In particular, continuity is critical at the boundary between the Inferred and Indicated Mineral Resource categories. The original contribution agrees with the importance of these points, and the principal author offers the following discussion and clarification. Further comment is also provided on the reporting of grade uncertainty through grade ranges.It is worth remembering that vein-gold deposits (e.g., shear-zone, lode-gold, mesothermal types etc.), particularly those containing coarse gold particles (e.g., >100 µm), generally show large variations in grade and an erratic grade distribution. In most cases, diamond drilling is a good measure of geological continuity (depending on drill spacing), but a poor measure of grade and its distribution. High-nugget effect deposits rank among the most difficult deposit types in terms of producing an accurate and precise resource estimate, and clearly represent a distinct deposit type."

"The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the value of Operational Readiness (OR) in the successful delivery of capital projects. OR can be captured using several technical and practical definitions:• To ensure that the capital project being delivered is capable of an effective start up, ramp-up as planned and a sustainable productive operation.• To function as intended when started, with the appropriate people able to run it.• To increase the value in delivering the product/service through established systems, processes and procedures, while simultaneously minimize risk to both the project and the business.Historically, mining and metallurgical capital projects concentrate efforts on cost and scheduling during the implementation and design phases. The completion and subsequent handover of the operational unit is the main objective.When reviewing the mining and metallurgical industry’s capital projects, it seems many poor results and errors in terms of project design and ramp-up are self-inflicted, with the project neglecting to account for key aspects of the future operational plant. Interestingly, if the problems for the future plant occur during project implementation, they can be prevented during the project phase. It is required to connect the operational knowledge with the project in order to ensure an effective start up and operation.The benefits of OR will be shown to be applicable not only to mining capital projects but also to sustaining and business transformation projects. The paper also includes industrial examples showing both proper and improper use of OR techniques.The paper will cover 3 main areas of Operational Readiness: the OR model, OR related risk elements (i.e., risks associated specifically with the improper execution of OR) and conclude with OR specific case studies."

Introduction The greatest single advance in rock drilling practice since the advent of percussion drills was the introduction of tungsten carbide tipped rock drill?bits. The evolution of rock drills has been a long and highly diversified effort which has culminated in the highly refined ?drilling machines we know today, but because of the spectacular possibilities shown by ?detachable bits, and especially those with tungsten carbide inserts, there is little doubt that the cutting face of .the drilling unit has in recent days stolen the spotlight of rock drilling research and commanded the major attention of the rock drilling fraternity. "Solid" Steels Until about twenty years ago, all rock was drilled with a one-piece rod with a bit forged on one end. In the early years of the art of rock drilling, there was tried every conceivable pattern of :bit from the single-edge chisel to elaborate geometric &apos;designs. In the end, it was found that a 4-point bit with two sharpened cutting edges crossing each other at right angles would serve best for most rock drilling requirements. For some years thereafter, the main concern of drill manufacturers was .to obtain the best possible steel for drill rods. This was not accomplished as easily as might be thought. The cutting end had to be such that it could be hardened sufficiently to do its work without premature dulling and yet not so brittle as to shatter under the multiple impacts.

"The Orion gold mine, located 7 Ian northeast of the town of Malartic, Quebec, was discovered in mid-1985. Underground exploration was undertaken in 1986 leading to commercial production in 1988. The upper part of the orebody was exploited above the 125 m level and a total of 131 090 t at an average grade of 5.31 g/t gold were extracted.This paper describes the authors&apos; current knowledge and interpretation of the geology, gold distribution, and structure of the Orion No.8 ore zone deposit. The deposit is an epigenetic lode gold occurrence somewhat unique in that both quartz-vein type and pyritic type of gold ore occur side-by-side. It is located within the Marban-Noriartic Deformation Corridor (MNDC) formed during a first deformation stage (D1) The MNDC is a well-defined regional structural feature in the Val d&apos;Or - Malartic mining camp. Primary gold mineralization is associated with the D1 event and is represented by pyritized, silicified and brecciated basaltic lavas enclosed by ultramafic flow units. The ore zone is concordant with the MNDC. Felsic intrusions are spatially related with the ore zone, but their role in the genesis of the ore has yet to be dermed.A second deformation event (D2) resulted in local folding, a second schistosity (S2) and reverse faulting. Gold remobilization, the formation of the gold-bearing quartz breccia and the emplacement of the main quartz vein at the No. 8 zone deposit were associated with this event."

The application of thickened/paste tailings for surface disposal has been practiced for many years but has recently started to gain wider international acceptance. With tailings ponds coming under increasing environmental scrutiny, there is growing momentum towards mine/tailings plans that greatly reduce the size or even eliminate tailings ponds completely. This paper provides examples from the author&apos;s own experiences of the application of thickened/paste tailings for surface disposal in different countries, under different climatic conditions and in different industries. The paper will also comment on current research initiatives and future trends.

"This study analyzes the separation of rare earth elements by means of a supported liquid membrane (SLM) with the final objective of recovering REE from an apatite concentrate (Alemrajabi, Forsberg, & Rasmuson, 2015; Mohammadi, Forsberg, Martinez de la Cruz, & Rasmuson, 2015). In this study, the feed phase consists of an aqueous phase containing REE, the membrane phase contains the organic solvent and carrier (D2EHPA and EHEHPA), and the stripping phase is a hydrochloric acid solution. An evaluation of mass fluxes, separation efficiency, and membrane performance is conducted. In order to analyze the suitability of liquid membranes in the extraction of REE, a deeper insight into the mechanisms causing instability is needed. In this study, surface tension is considered as the key factor of Marangoni instabilities and spontaneous emulsification.INTRODUCTIONThe demand of REE and their compounds has increased considerably due to their special physicochemical features that make them crucial elements for numerous high-tech applications, including wind turbines, hybrid cars, mobile phones, and defense technologies. They are also extensively utilized in traditional industries such as nuclear energy, petroleum, metallurgy, agriculture, and textiles (Xie, Zhang, Dreisinger, & Dyole, 2014; Zhang, Wu, Bian, & Zeng, 2014).Solvent extraction is widely used for the separation of REE (Xie et al., 2014; Zhao, Huo, Pan, Li, & Liu, 2014). Di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (EHEHPA) are two of the most effective extractants for the separation of rare earth elements among organophosphorus extractants (Gupta & Krishnamurthy, 2005). However, the difficulty in stripping loaded D2EHPA extractant, especially for heavy REE, has limited its utilization. Yttrium can be stripped at lower acidities in EHEHPA systems compared to D2EHPA systems (Gupta et al., 2005), but the extraction efficiency is lower. Conventional solvent extraction by mixer-settlers is restricted by its large solvent inventory and loading limits, and suffers from phase disengagement, emulsification, loss of solvent, and flooding problems (Swain, Jeong, Lee, & Lee, 2007). In this context, supported liquid membranes (SLMs) present a potential alternative due to their advantages, being low solvent inventory, process simplicity, low energy and operational costs, great enrichment ratio, and combination of extraction and stripping into one single step. A SLM is a system in which two aqueous phases are separated by an organic liquid membrane suspended in the pores of a porous support by capillary forces.
