"CANMET has been operating as a Government Technology Centre for two years. Many of CANMET's programs involve long-term research and require special expertise, often available at Canadian universities. CANMET's involvement with universities ranges from research grants and contracts to exchanges of scientists and joint use of research facililies. Examples of CANMET - university cooperation in mining are presented. IntroductionIn the last two years or so CANMET has undergone a significant metamorphosis, resulting in greater emphasis on applied research to enhance Canada's industrial capability. CANMET's new mandate is reflected in the types of projects undertaken and their categorization, (Fig . I). Emphasis is being placed on two project categories: strategic R&D, to enable CANMET to serve the changing technological needs of the industry; and incrernental R&D, to serve the more immediate industry needs through modifications to existing technologies and knowledge. The balance of CANMET's e ffor t is devoted to providing Mandated and Specialized Services, and to Exploratory Research.CANMET interaction with universities can involve one of several available vehicles : contracts, research grants, exchanges of scientists , student employment and nomination of professors on CANMET's advisory council. Instances of key university technical support to CANMET mining projects are highlighted."

"High iron solution concentrations often result in the formation of basic ferric sulfate during the high temperature oxidation of sulfidic materials such as base metal and refractory gold concentrates. Consequently, the “Hot Cure Process” followed by limestone neutralization is required to facilitate subsequent processing and/or disposal of the leach residue. The present paper discusses strategies that can be employed to influence the composition and nature of the high-iron content leach residues produced during pressure leaching.INTRODUCTION Control of iron deportment in hydrometallurgical processing remains a key challenge for a range of reasons. Strategies generally relate to the control of conditions under which iron is optimally rejected (Demopoulos, 2009). Supersaturation provides the driving force for crystallization and this can be controlled by a number of factors that include (1) pH and/or Eh control, (2) the presence of matrix anions and impurities, (3) dilution, (4) complexation and dissociation and (5) manipulation of the rate at which the metal to be precipitated is released to solution. Each of these factors is impacted by temperature. Good control of crystallization is essential to the control of precipitate properties such as the degree of crystallinity, stability, particle size and quality which covers both the extent of impurity uptake and suitability of the precipitate for waste disposal. The quality and properties of iron precipitates in turn can impact downstream processing. It is the aim of this paper to discuss the generation of iron-containing residues produced during the pressure oxidation of sulfidic ores and concentrates and how the nature of these can be controlled to potentially facilitate further processing. A brief overview of several related topics will now be given and include, where relevant, discussion of work undertaken in our laboratories. In addition, brief discussions of selected process options that enable good control of iron rejection will be provided."

"IntroductionThe typical potash processing plant recovers and/ or upgrades from 10% to 20% of its production through the recrystallization process. The feed to the recrystallization section consists of preconcentrated slurries of fine crystal size that cannot be raised to the required product grade by flotation and fine dusts also of low grade and too fine for compaction feed. It produces high grade white potash crystals that can be marketed as a high grade product or blended into the flotation products to raise their grade. In this chapter, a typical leaching (dissolving) and recrystallization operation will be discussed.The crystallization process makes use of the three phase system chemistry of NaCl, KCl, and H,O. The normal potash process operates on a temperature range of 75°F to 95 °F. A three phase slurry feed to the dissolving circuits will be within that range. The potash (KCl) is dissolved by heating the slurry in the presence of sufficient brine to a temperature of 190°F to 200°F. As the slurry is heated, the potash (KCI) dissolves and the salt (NaCI) precipitates. The potash rich brine is then clarified and the salt and other undissolved solids removed by thickening. Clarified brine becomes the crystallizer feed.The hot brine is cooled in evaporative cooling crystallizers. In cooling, the potash precipitates as a high grade white crystal. Crystallization is done in multiple effects to permit energy recovery and control of the process. In a four effect crystallizer the cooling is done by recycling mother liquor counter currently through the first two effect condensors and using brine pond brine for the cooling of the last two.The crystallizer product is removed from the last effect as a slurry at normal process temperature and is fed either to its own centrifuging and drying circuit or blended with the flotation product for centrifuging and drying."

"MASSIVE sulphide deposits are found in two areas of New Brunswick, the St. Stephen area and the Bathurst-Newcastle area. In both, the geology in the immediate vicinity of the sulphide bodies is largely inferred from drilling results as outcrop is not plentiful and is, in fact, almost lacking in most places. With few exceptions these deposits have not been explored by underground methods. Consequently much of the. detail on the geology will only become known over a period of years as economic conditions make mining feasible.Much of the information contained in this paper has been supplied directly by company geologists. As a result of the number of contributors, some confusion of nomenclature bas to be anticipated. Cross-sections and plans of the individual deposits are, in most cases, as supplied by the companies concerned. Most of the interpretations are the responsibility of the author."

Abstract - The Bermuda Zn-Pb showing is hosted by dolomitized Blue Fiord Formation of Devonian age, located east of the Ensorcellement dome on the Grinnell Peninsula of Devon Island. Fluid inclusions in hydrothermal calcite indicate that the mineralization precipitated from low-temperature, highly saline brines. The ?34S compositions of sphalerite, galena, and marcasite range from 16.1‰ to 35.2‰. Consequently, the Bermuda showing is interpreted to be Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) mineralization. The apparent age of mineralization has been determined by the Rb-Sr method from sphalerite separates, and a Late Devonian age of 357 ± 50 Ma (MSWD=65), with an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7083 ± 0.0020 is indicated. This date, within error, is the same as the Polaris deposit. This suggests that the mineralization formed during the Ellesmerian Orogen, although it is also possible that mineralization is associated with extension, related to the opening of the Sverdrup basin. The strontium and sulfur isotopes and fluid inclusion analyses indicate the involvement of a brine that acquired its salinity from interaction with evaporites, lower in the stratigraphic succession. The Polaris mine is the type deposit in the Cornwallis Zn-Pb district and is hosted by the Thumb Mountain Formation. The results of this study are significant because they demonstrate that regional brine movement is more widespread than previously recognized, and that MVT mineralization in the Cornwallis Zn-Pb district is not restricted to the Thumb Mountain Formation.

"The CIM Careers Task Force has addressed industry's concern of a perceived shortage of skilled personnel over the coming decade. The industry is faced with a fundamental shift by young Canadians away from scientific and engineering careers, coupled with the fact that today 's students know little about the minerals industry and have a poor image of it.The responses to two questionnaires which were distributed to CIM members, government, professional associations, and educational institutions, formed the backbone of the Task Force position paper, which presents a shopping list of ideas and initiatives for consideration and to facilitation by the various organizations concerned.Tackling the image of the minerals industry is part of the answer to the careers crisis. On the positive side, the minerals industry provides the allure of a treasure hunt for young people and is seen as a significant contributor to the economy. It is understood to be well paying, provide good opportunities for advancement, individualism, and travel, and to be rich in esprit de corps. Enhancement of these positive aspects of the image can take place at all student age levels.Numerous initiatives tackle the negative aspects of the image. Young people perceive the industry to be environmentally damaging, which is the most crucial aspect that needs to be addressed. The industry is seen as still in the pick-and-shovel days and as a sunset industry that is running out of ore. Work in the minerals industry is perceived as dangerous and lacking glamour. And finally, the perceived remoteness of operations and exploration is seen as a drawback to a largely urbanized student group.Tackling young peoples' curiosity and interest in the minerals industry throughout grade school and encouraging postsecondary science and engineering students to enter the minerals industry by ensuring summer employment is the second part of the equation.The CIM Careers Task Force position paper develops strategy to attract and maintain interest of students in grade school, junior high, senior high school, and in post-secondary levels. The strategy outlines initiatives targetted at each of the educational levels and action plans to accomplish the objectives."

"Hydraulic rock drilling equipment has been in use at Falconbridge over the past two years in both production and development situations. This paper deals with the experience gained in the application of hydraulic drilling in the company's mines and discusses the benefits and problems encountered during their use. The paper primarily focuses on technical, operating, maintenance and economic aspects of the machines, and does not attempt to compare the performances of different machines from the various manufacturers.IntroductionThe Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited are comprised of five operating mines and two mines under development. All the production comes from underground mines, mostly at depths below 1000 metres. The company, faced with increases in operating costs and difficult mining conditions, has continued to seek solutions with the help of new mining technology.The development of electric-hydraulic drilling machines in Europe had been pursued with great interest and, in 1979, a decision was made to test these machines to prove their technical and economic viability under operating conditions. Since then, a number of electric-hydraulic machines have been evaluated in different situations and currently nine hydraulic machines are being used in the company's various mines. These machines are comprised of two-boom drilling jumbos for development, one-boom machines for longhole drilling and a large-hole-diameter drilling rig for blasthole drilling. One hydraulic jumbo has also been used in a cut-and-fill stope."

"With the continuous depletion of high-grade tungsten ores, the low-grade refractory wolframite has become an important source for the tungsten industry. However, the large-scale utilization of low-grade refractory wolframite is disappointedly scarce, it is due to leanness of valuable minerals, complex mineral characterization and use of toxic collectors.The aim of this study was to develop an environment-friendly processing flowsheet, which was used for beneficiation of low-grade tungsten ore containing 0.45% WO3 from New Brunswick in Canada, and the content of arsenic is 0.68% in this materials. The objective of beneficiation studied was to obtain a concentration containing 60% WO3 with less than 0.5% of arsenic under the condition without any flotation reagents. In this environment-friendly processing flowsheet, magnetic separation technology, classification and gravity separation technology were combined and employed. Firstly, magnetic separation was employed for the first pre-concentration process, over 95% of the feed was rejected as the final tailings, meanwhile, over 85% of arsenic minerals were removed with tailings. Secondly, gravity separation tests were employed on the classified magnetic pre-concentrate in the second pre-concentration process, a second pre-concentrate with WO3 grade of 54.32% and As grade of 5.41% was obtained. Finally, two stage magnetic cleaning were conducted on the second pre-concentrate for upgrading the second pre-concentrate, the mostly arsenic and gangues were removed from the second pre-concentrate. Finally, this novel processing achieved an effective recovery of fine wolframite from low grade tungsten ore with high arsenic. A concentrate with WO3 grade of 64.81% were obtained in new opened processing flowsheet, and As grade was less than of 0.5% in this concentrate. Furthermore, remarkable feature of this processing flowsheet is environment-friendly due to avoid using the toxic flotation reagents during the whole mineral processing.INTRODUCTIONTungsten is an essential metal and is the most widely used in industrial production such as national defense, electro-mechanical products, textile and leather sectors (Srivastava et al., 2000). Wolframite and scheelite are the main mineral sources of tungsten metal. IN the summer of 1934, gold was discovered on Lodge bay, on the north shore of lake Athabaska in northern Saskatchewan, about fifty miles east of the Alberta boundary line. The first claims were taken up by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, and there was a 'rush' to locate similar showings. Staking continued through the summer and succeeding winter, and in the spring of 1935 the provincial government established a recording office at a convenient point which is central to the more important holdings and where 'planes can land in any weather. During the past summer, the name of this townsite was changed from Beaverlodge to Goldfields, and a post office was established here. The season was one of great activity; a great deal of assessment and development work was carried out and a large amount of further prospecting done. In addition to the work by private companies, geological investigation was carried out in the region by a Federal Geological Survey party under the charge of the writer and a reconnaissance examination was made of an area of some 7,000 square miles surrounding the region of particular interest. Though this was the first discovery of gold in the region it was not the first occasion that prospecting had been carried out along the north side of lake Athabaska. Over twenty years ago, a number of prospectors were at work in the area and a large number of claims were staked, many of which were never recorded. One man by the name of Piché, in the years 1910, 1912, and 1913, took up a considerable number of claims north of Pine Channel narrows, east of Fond du Lac. His discoveries, which consisted of small showings of sulphides in sedimentary gneiss, proved to be of no economic importance. In 1915, a sudden widespread interest was aroused by the report that a sample of ore collected near Fond du Lac had yielded a very high assay in silver. In March and April of that year, prospectors began to rush into the field by dog teams to take up claims, and, as soon as the Athabaska river was free of ice, others started by boat from Athabaska Landing. Some hundreds of claims were staked and recorded in the Dominion Land Office at Edmonton or at Fort Smith. By July, most of the prospectors had? left the region, having failed to find any silver ore. In 1921, considerable prominence was given to the area a few miles east of Goldfields by reports that very large masses of iron ore were available there. Claims were taken up, but the material is much too low grade to be considered commercial ore.

The Boleo project is located in Mexico close to the town of Santa Rosalia on the Baja Peninsula. The Boleo deposit contains copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese values as oxides with minor sulfides. The Boleo deposit is metallurgically challenging due to: 1) the requirement to recover four separate metals; 2) the presence of high levels of clay in the deposit resulting in difficult solid-liquid separations, and; 3) the need to use seawater for the bulk of the processing. Baja Mining, Bateman Engineering and SGS Lakefield Research have collaborated to develop and test a process flowsheet to recover copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese products at Boleo. The key steps in the flowsheet are: ? Feed preparation (scrubbing and ball milling of oversize) in copper raffinate ? Ore leaching using oxidative and reductive leaching ? CCD washing using high rate thickening technology ? Copper SXlEW ? Treatment of a bleed solution for cobalt, zinc and manganese recovery The process for cobalt, zinc and manganese recovery involves iron and aluminum removal followed by cobalt/zinc bulk extraction using CSIRO's DSX solvent extraction system and selective zinc and cobalt stripping. The zinc strip solution is evaporated to produce zinc sulfate monohydrate crystals to market and cobalt is recovered via a further SXlEW process as high purity metal. Manganese is precipitated as manganese carbonate from the DSX raffinate solution. This paper will review the Boleo process flowsheet and provide detailed results from the 2006 pilot plant operation conducted at SGS Lakefield in Canada.

The application of pressure oxidation processes to copper feed materials has gained increased exposure in recent years and some of these processes have made commercial inroads, although rather limited to date. Among the hydrometallurgical processes with significant commercial potential, Dynatec's copper pressure leaching process has been applied to arsenic-bearing copper materials and has shown, through a number of batch and continuous test programs, that pressure oxidation is a technically feasible option for the recovery of copper with coincident sequestration of arsenic in an environmentally benign residue.

During 1998 COGEMA Resources Inc. announced that operations at the Cluff Lake mine will be suspended indefinitely by the end of year 2000 as a result of deteriorating uranium market conditions. To remain profitable, Cluff Lake mine started an aggressive cost reduction program. A cost reduction team was formed to look for ways to lower production costs. The focus of this team was to screen all areas and to come up with ideas to improve the economy of the mine and ensure the viability of the operations over the remaining three years of operations. Among the areas where significant savings were achieved are: (1) replacement of portion of cement with fly ash in backfill; (2) backfill optimization; and (3) new shotcrete plant installation on site for bulk in-house shotcrete production. This paper details the research work carried out by Cluff Lake mine on these projects and results of its application.

Addressing deficiencies and defects that occur during construction projects is costly and time consuming. The manual quality assurance programs currently used in the industry have certain limitations, including human error and lack of consistency. Hence, there is a need for integrated electronic models that employ new technologies and methods. This research introduces an integrated construction quality control system that has the potential to improve quality management processes in the construction field for piping construction, which is a complex process often requiring rework. The proposed integrated system relies on data collected from construction sites using photogrammetry and laser scanning, which is then used to compare actual work performed to that designed. The proposed system aims to improve the promptness and accuracy of quality assurance processes, in particular dimension measurements, by avoiding human error and integrating defect detection and quality management. The use of this system has highlighted some of the limitations during data fusion and acquisition process, which are highlighted in this paper. These aspects must be considered to increase the reliability of the acquired information.

A process for the recovery of copper from the waste oxide copper of a mined-out sulphide orebody is described. Hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from this and similar wastes has been tried several times previously without success. Leaching is carried out by sulphuric acid in columns under conditions that minimise the iron content of the pregnant leach liquor, and copper is then recovered by ion exchange rather than the more conventional solvent extraction. The resin is stripped by spent electrolyte and copper is electrowon. Results are presented for testwork originally carried out in 1993, and repeated in 2006, and the novel aspects of the process, leaching and ion exchange, are discussed. Finally, preliminary order of magnitude capital and operating costs are given, demonstrating that the process is cost effective.

ABSTRACT A revised stratigraphic section of Carboniferous rocks which occupy about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland is presented. Gypsum, which outcrops at thirty-five different localities, is found to belong to four principal zones in the section. The newly mapped structure of the region makes the otherwise random occurrences of gypsum appear as systematic outcroppings of the four zones which follow the regional structure. Details of several occurrences are given and those most advantageous for exploitation are pointed out. INTRODUCTION ROCKS of Carboniferous age occupy an area of about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland. They occur in a belt, from 5 to 15 miles wide, which extends from the head of St. Georges bay southwestward for 65 miles to the mouth of Little Codroy river (see Figure 1). Several hundred feet of Pennsylvanian rocks overlie rocks of Mississippian age, which are at least 12,000 feet thick. The rocks of the Carboniferous section of Newfoundland are very similar to those of Nova Scotia and represent a northeastward continuation of the same palaeophysiographic conditions. Mississippian measures of Windsor equivalence include thick gypsum deposits which outcrop at many places and which extend under large areas as indicated by sink-holes and by structural considerations.

"Synthetic lubricants have for many years documented extended service life and provided superior performance in temperature extremes. Increasing interest in synthetics' ability to reduce energy costs has resulted in laboratory and industry application evaluations. These tests have documented savings in functions such as worm gear drives, spur gears and in compressors. Energy savings data are presented as well as payback calculations as low as thirty days.The National Research Council of Canada has estimated that the Canadian economy loses over five billion dollars per year in friction and wear. Figures quoted were for 1986 during which it was estimated that nine hundred and forty million dollars were lost in the mining industry alone"" It has been further estimated that about 115 million dollars can be immediately recovered through improved tribology practices (Table I).The purpose of this paper is to present results and savings opportunities through the use of synthetic lubricants in various but common applications. Many other areas exist with the opportunity for energy savings such as in the use of more efficient drive equipment, reduced contact seals, spray mist lubrication systems and reduced friction coatings on rotating equipment such as pump impellers"
