The Canadian government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002 and, prior to ratification, committed to equitable distribution of the burden of implementation. The Federal government's Large Final Emitters group is working with industry to develop covenants that will consider the unique nature of the company's operations and not unreasonably burden any one sector or company. Ensuring equitable distribution must consider local, national and international issues. From a Canadian iron ore producers perspective, the fact that most of the iron ore production in the world is in countries that have no Kyoto commitment is a critical issue. Another issue unique to this sector is the increased addition of fluxing agents in iron ore pellet production which has shifted some process related greenhouse gas emissions from steel producers to iron ore producers. While the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol are primarily environmental, the economic implications for Canadian industry are not trivial. For decades Canadian companies have been actively improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to maintain a global competitive position. Production of iron ore pellets is an energy intensive process and the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) is the largest Canadian producer. In 2002 IOCC identified energy and Kyoto Protocol implementation as critical risk factors for their organization and appointed a full time Energy Manager. In January 2003, IOCC initiated a comprehensive process for identifying energy cost reduction opportunities and established an Energy Master plan. This process included:

IntroductionIt is not uncommon in milling operations to encounter a crisis. That is the point when the process does not behave as expected and fails to respond to the increasingly desperate efforts of the metallurgists and operators. Flowsheet and process changes are attempted and abandoned. With luck, one or more of the changes achieves some mitigation of the original problem or more usually, the original cause of the problem disappears. Regardless, the metallurgist can sit back and bask in the apparent success of his or her endeavours.Less common is when a problem is carefully diagnosed, a team put together to explore all avenues and recommend a path of action that is implemented on time, on budget and immediately delivers on the promises which are sustained over time. "BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF GRINDING CIRCUITCrushed ore at -5/ 16 in. is delivered by a conveyor system from the crushing plant to two 1250 ton fine ore bins. The ore is transferred from each bin by a 30 in. feeder conveyor belt, operated by a Link Belt P.I. V. (variable speed) drive, to a 24 in. conveyor that feeds the 8 x 10 Allis Chalmers rod mill.The rod mill discharges to a common mill discharge pump box. Three 6 x 6 SRL pumps are employed to pump the combined mill discharge pulp to a common distributor box which distributes the feed to two of the three Kreb D lSB cyclones in each of the two banks at a hydraulic pressure of 6 psi.The cyclone overflow at a specific gravity of 1. 25 (i.e. 32% solids) is transferred by gravity to two revolving chip screens for wood chip removal and from there to a pump box. Two 5 x 5 SRL pumps feed the pulp to the thickeners. The underflow from the cyclones is fed to two 8 x 8 Allis Chalmers ball mills which discharge to the common mill discharge pump box. Thus, a closed circuit is formed between the ball mills and their respective bank of cyclones. The circulating load as most recently calculated is 262%."

Introduction Baffin Island is still too in-accessible to be of interest to the mining industry. However, twenty years ago few people dreamed of mining iron ?ore in Labrador. A journey by air to the most remote places in the Arctic is today no more remarkable than a trip to Europe, and the technical difficulties of mining minerals of high value are not insurmountable. Some ?observations concerning the geology and mineral possibilities of Baffin Island, the largest of the Arctic islands, may therefore interest the members of the Institute, in spite of problematic practical value of the subject. The following short account is mainly based on observations made during the Baird Expedition of the Arctic Institute of North America last summer 1950), and on information available from earlier expeditions. Early Work Baffin Island was one of the first parts of Canada to attract prospectors. Frobisher sent a shipload of rocks, which he believed contained precious metals, from Baffin Island to England. This attempt, however, was a failure and no further serious prospecting work has, so far as I know, been done. During the past few years geological mapping has been carried out by the Geological Survey of Canada (Fortier. Davison, 1949-1950) in the southern parts ?of the island, along the coast of Hudson strait. In 1942, Weeks mapped the coast from Pangnirtung to the head of Cumberland fiord, and Netteling river up to Netteling lake. In the northern parts of the island, only scattered observations have been made ?by Bell, Watkins, Baird, and others.

For many years, it has been known that certain loud noises may, with prolonged exposure, temporarily or permanently damage a person's hearing ability. Pneumatic rock drills, al-though among the offenders, have, until recently, remained unaltered and unrestricted as to noise output. Now, there are drills available with higher rates of penetration and yet with noise levels reduced to those of previous models or less. Use of such drills, when proved to be superior in noise attenuation and of acceptable performance, should be encouraged in order to reduce future hearing losses to a minimum. People Have the Right to Hear P ERHAPS the earliest recognized indication of hearing loss due to industrial noise was the deaf-ness developed by the workmen in boiler factories. Here, the vibration set up in the shells by the riveting hammers gradually deteriorated the workmen's hearing, especially those whose job it was to hold the dollies inside the drum, where the sound is greatly intensified by reflection

The Tribag copper deposit is one of the rare examples of mineralized breccias in the Canadian Shield. The breccia is a pipe-like body, and consists of granitic, diabasic and volcanic fragments embedded in a vuggy, quartz-carbonate matrix. The mineralization is essentially chalcopyrite and pyrite, with minor molybdenite, sphalerite, galena and other sulphides. The main ore zone is saddle-like in shape, and is enveloped in a zone of chloritization, sericitization and clay-mineral alteration. It is suggested that the breccia is of the diatreme type. Introduction T HIS paper is based on eighteen months of field work, including surface and underground geological mapping and core logging, and on the survey of relevant literature. No significant amount of laboratory work has been done as yet. Location and Access The Tribag Batchawana property is located 40 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, about 10 miles east of Lake Superior. A 17-mile, all-weather road connects the property to the Trans-Canada highway to the south, and 4 miles of a 12-mile road remain to be completed to link it to the Algoma Central Railway to the northeast.

Quebec Cartier Mining Company operates approximately two hundred and fifty pieces of equipment in a climate with a temperature that has averaged 27.5°F during the last seven years. The use of special-purpose lubricants, fuels, antifreeze, rubber compounds, and alloy steels have reduced the cold-weather hazards. In some areas, high-cost cold-weather protective heating devices are being eliminated with experience.

Semi-finished copper and copper-alloy products are typically produced by casting, subsequent hot rolling or extruding and further cold working by rolling and drawing. The technological properties of the products depend not only on the chemical composition of the alloys but also on process parameters such as annealing conditions and degree of deformation. In each production step, measuring and control technology is an important tool for optimizing processes and ensuring constant high quality. This paper follows the product all the way from testing incoming scrap packages, chemical analysis of melts, mould level control in casting, non-destructive testing technologies in cold forming processes, controlling geometrical properties in the production process, to the final tests of technological properties. All test methods are focused on the applications and requirements of our customers, as the examples show.

"Dome mine, in the Porcupine mining camp of northern Ontario, is one of the important gold mines of Canada, its production of gold from the commencement in 1910 to the end of 1946 having a value of $149,000,000.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe oldest rocks in the mine are greenstones of Keewatin age(l). Those to the south are known as the southern greenstones, but little is known of their structure. Those in the northwest part of Fig. 1 and the north part of Fig. 2 are known as the northern greenstones or greenstone 'nose'. They face north, dip steeply north, and end to the east against an unconformity which pitches northeast about 20°. The volcanics are overlain unconformably by Timiskaming .conglomerate and slate. All these rocks are cut by porphyry. Closely associated with the porphyry is a group of rocks that have suffered extreme alteration. Diabase dykes intrude all the other rocks and the ore. The principal massive rocks in the mine are two adjacent flows known asthe andesite (south) and dacite (Fig. 1). They are composed chiefly ofmassive, medium-grained lava. Pillows, flow lines, and other typically volcanicfeatures are found along the tops of both flows and at other places in theandesite. These parts nearly everywhere show a slight schistosity panllelwith the flows except in the orebodies, where they are massive."

The Snow Lake-Wekusko Lake region of northern Manitoba conta ins numerous lode gold occurrences, including the largest gold deposit in the Churchill Prov ince, the Nor Acme mine. The Aphebian volcanic and sedimentary rocks of this region are comprised of submarine volcanic strata, overlain by turbidites, both of the Amisk Group, and fluvi atile sedimenta ry strata and bimodally composed subaerial volcanic rocks of the overlying Missi Group. Gold occurs as: 1) accessory gold in volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, 2) lode gold in shear zones related to sy n- to post-FI thrust fa ults, and 3) lode-gold associated with post-F2 fault . An alteration a emblage of biotite, al bite and calc ite is associated with both groups of lode-gold deposits, and has been superimposed on the regionall y-developed metamorphic assemblages. AJthough these deposi ts are spatial ly related to britt le-ductile faul ts of different initial ages, they appear to have all fo rmed after the major period of reg ional fo lding and metamorphism, and thus may be penecontemporaneous. The alteration is different from the sericite-ankerite-quartz assemblage that is typically associated with gold deposits in Superio r Prov ince. Deposits in thi s area of Churchill Prov ince may have formed either at a higher temperature or a deeper structu ra l level than tho e in Superior Prov ince.

The diamondiferous Drybones Bay kimberlite pipe is the largest pipe (900 m by 400 m) discovered to date in the Northwest Territories. The pipe intrudes granodiorite of the Archean age Defeat Pluton and contains crater, reworked crater (epiclastic) and diatreme facies kimberlite. In-situ measurements of seismic p-wave velocity were recorded with in-line refraction arrays over representative areas. Refractions from fresh kimberlite were recorded over epiclastic facies kimberlite in the eastern portion of the pipe and returned an average velocity of 4300 m/s. Refractions from weathered kimberlite were recorded on all lines and returned velocities ranging from 1900 m/s to 2200 m/s. Granite surrounding the pipe returned an average velocity of 5400 m/s. The results indicate that there is a definite contrast in seismic velocities between kimberlite and country rocks at Drybones Bay and suggest that seismic refraction surveys may be an effective means of screening kimberlite targets in glaciated areas underlain by igneous or metamorphic rocks.

ABSTRACT Gold-bearing quartz veins in the northeastern Ontario and north western Quebec mining camps are shown to have been mineralized in part by epithermal solutions. The vertical gradient of pressure during this stage of mineralization is calculated, using decrepitation temperatures of quartz and thermoelectric potentials of pyrite. The base of the Cobalt sediments, which lie uncomformably over part of the mining region, may be taken as datum level in calculating the depth of erosion into the basement below that level. The vertical extent of the epithermal gold mineralizaiton in this region is at least 9,000 feet below the datum level. INTRODUCTION IT WOULD have been difficult a few years ago to convince economic geologists that after making a series of measurements in a laboratory in Toronto, the depth of erosion which has taken place below the base of the Cobalt sediments at any place in the Ontario-Quebec mining region can be calculated to the neare.st 500 feet, or that the same series of measurements would also serve to allow a prediction of the minimum vertical depth of probable ore in a producing mine in the same region, with the same degree of certainty. Possibly it is just as difficult today, but the following description of the data and calculations may help to demonstrate the reliability of the method.

Crystalline igneous rocks, known commercially as granite, are exploited in Quebec f rom more than twenty-five quarries for building, ornamental and monumental purpose$. Quebec is the main Canadian producer of construction granite, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of total production. Jn the last three years, this industry has experienced an important growth due to improved marketing and use of modern equipment in rock-cutting and polishing. Jn /983 a 35 per cent sales increase is forecast. The main rock varieties extracted are the following: porphyritic pinkish grey granite and green charnockite from Riviere-dPierre, mahogany brown granite and black anorthositic rock f rom the Lac Saint-Jean area, fine-grained pink granite from Guenette, coarse-grained brown quartz monzonitefrom SaintA lexis-des-Monts. All these rock types occur in the Grenville tectonic province whereas a medium-grained, light grey granite, Devonian in age, is extensively being quarried in the southern part of the Appalachians. In the Superior province a greenish black diabase and a deep red granite are extracted. Search for new varieties and deposits is actively being carried out by prospectors and by the minis/ere de /'Energie et des Ressources du Quebec following growing demand for granitic and gabbroic rocks as dimension stone.

Introduction The geology of the Cochen-our Willans gold mine has been described in reports by the late Dr. H. C. Horwood (1) in 1940 and by Dr. J. P. Nowlan (2) in 1947. Information from these and other (unpublished) reports has been incorporated in the present paper, together with some recent ideas regarding structural features which are at present being used to locate ore shoots. Location and History The mining claims of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, occupy 705 acres in Dome township, on the east shore of Red lake opposite McKenzie island. Adjoining properties are those of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines on the west, Boymar Gold Mines on the north, Marcus Gold Mines on the east, and Martin-McNeely Gold Mines on the south. The claims of the original group were staked by W. M. Cochenour, Dan Willans, and H. G. Young, and the Cochenour Willans Syndicate was formed in 1928. Work was carried out by the Syndicate and several other companies during the next eight years with inconclusive results, due to the irregular occurrence of the ore. In 1936, Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, was incorporated and production was finally started late in 1939.

"Coal is one of Alberta's major fuel resources, but its distribution, especially in the flat plains region, has been somewhat obscured by surficial deposits. After a period of neglect, easily strippable plains coal is presently approaching a position of dominance in electrical power production, a position it is likely to retain for a number of decades in the face of strong competition from hydro and nuclear power. Accordingly, the Research Council of Alberta has undertaken an inventory survey of the province's supplies of this resource.In the southern part of the province and in the north-central forest-fringe area, some strippable coal is found in the Belly River Formation and its equivalents, but major strippable coal reserves in large areas of central Alberta occur within the Edmonton Formation. The survey is planned on a reconnaissance scale, drilling test holes at 2-mile intervals in selected large areas. It appears to show that, in well-settled regions, large reserves of strippable coal are only to be expected where they have long been known; major presently unknown bodies of coal must be sought in unsettled regions or at depths too great for strip mining. However, such bodies might still be economically competitive with hydro and nuclear power in the production of electric power for some time to come."

THE Michipicoten area, one of numerous iron-bearing "Archean" segments in the Shield, contains two main types of iron formation, a normal Keewatin-type, consisting of interbanded chert, siliceous magnetite and jasper, and, gradational to this, a carbonate-sulphide type which contains large de-posits of siderite and pyrite. The carbonate-sulphide type of iron formation bears a direct and intimate relationship to the volcanic development of the area; it there-by affords some insight into genetic problems of Archeanron formation in general. The purpose of this pa-per is to summarize the geological setting of Michipicoten iron formations and to briefly review genetic aspects of recent work in the area. GENERAL GEOLOGY in largely by assorted volcanics and sediments of the Michipicoten series and younger, regional granite masses. (Fig. 1). The Michipicoten series comprises a thick assemblage of mixed flows and pyroclastics together with elastic sediments and banded iron formations. Among all spraying processes, cold spraying has attracted a special attention in recent years, both as a coating - and more recently - as a rapid manufacturing technique. The interest in this process is mainly because of the fact that the deposition of spray material takes place at moderately low temperatures, and thus, oxidation and unfavourable microstructural changes can be alleviated. In this process, a highly compressed gas, flowing through a de Laval nozzle, accelerates the particles of the spray powder to high velocities of up to 1200 m/s. Although there is no melting of particles prior to impact on the substrate, cold-sprayed deposits can be denser and more tightly bonded as compared to the equivalent deposits produced by conventional thermal spraying methods. The present contribution focuses on this unique aspect of cold spraying. Modelling of particle impact, combined with various experimental observations, is employed to illustrate that bonding of particles and hence material deposition occurs through shear instability - associated with severe plastic deformation and localized heat generation - at the interacting surfaces of particles and substrate. The results of modelling also provide an insight to the influence of material and process parameters on the critical velocity and on the microstructural properties of cold-sprayed deposits.

Friction-type hoists have been in operation at Geco Mines Limited since Septtember, 1957. At the end of the year 1963, the skip hoist had handled nearly ~ million tons of ore and waste. In March, 1962, with the deepening of the shaft, the hoisting de11th was increased from 1,450 to 2,450 feet. Operating experience with the hoists, hoist and balance ropes, rope treads and other related equipment is presented. The paper is intended to supplement an earlier one -"Heavy-Duty Friction Hoisting at Geco Mines," by W. M. Harvey (C.I.M. Transactions, Volume LXIII, 1960, pp. 193 -197). General G ECO Mine Limited is located at Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately 160 miles east of Port Arthur and 190 mile northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. The Company was formed to exploit a copper-zinc-silver orebody, with current ore reserve (1963) of approximately 21 million tons. The production plant was designed to mine and treat 1.25 million tons per annum. The production and service hoists are mounted at-the top of a reinforced concrete tower above the shaft.
