Industrial plants located in the province of Quebec, Canada, are subjected to large variations of the ambient air temperature, Building ventilation systems of these plants must have some flexibility in order to meet industrial hygiene standards (TLV for chemical substances, heat stress and cold stress) at any time of the year, The building ventilation of a bath treatment plant of an aluminium smelter in Quebec was examined under summer and winter conditions, Part of the plant has periodic emissions of hydrogen fluoride gas and heat from hot anode butts, CFD modeling was used to optimise the building ventilation of the bath treatment plant, The present study proposes a modified building ventilation system, which improves the internal environment, complies with industrial hygiene standards and also reduces heating costs by 20 % during winter.

"All attempts to remove significant amounts of arsenic from enargite via neutral or reductive pyro routes have required operating temperatures between 600 and 700 º C, too high to propose an equipment development program. Operating at reduced pressures, or using hydrogen or elemental sulphur as a sweeping gas did not help to lower these temperatures. Admixing iron powder gave excellent results, but still required 700 º C. By fortuity, in recent experiments to produce tennantite from an enargite mineral sample, it was observed that enargite was completely converted to bornite, chalcopyrite with minor residual tennantite within an hour at 400-450 ºC. This is believed to be due to the presence of pyrite in the mineral sample treated. All earlier decomposition work appears to have been done on predominantly enargite (i.e. low pyrite) samples, or at high operating temperatures, ignoring possible reactions at lower temperature. The decomposition of enargite into iron substituted tennantite plus some bornite under evolution of liquid elemental sulphur, followed by further decomposition of this tennantite into bornite and volatile arsenic sulphides, appears experimentally feasible at these low temperatures and mimics described ore genesis pathways at > 250 ºC in saline solutions. The theory and practice of sampling of particulate material have been the focus of a continued attention on the part of the mining industry worldwide for almost a century now, because of its critical importance at all phases of a mining project, from exploration (bulk sampling, assaying) to production (grade control) and marketing (quality control). A powerful, complete theory was put together by P. Oy (1968 to i982), but its applications to gold ores have met with limited success to date, due to the inadequacy of its sampling variance and minimum sample mass determination formulae to the challenging case of gold ores. This paper presents a research project completed at Inco Exploration and Technical Services Inc., using a geostatistical approach, to shed light on the results of P.Gy's theory, and adapt them to the case of particulate gold ores. After a reminder of Gy's formulae and a simplified demonstration of the generic form of Gy's and more traditional formulae, an empirical approach, based on sampling experiments from four gold deposits, shows how Gy's formulae must be corrected to adjust to the case of gold ores. The generality of the results formula is then substantiated with a geostatistical analysis of the problem. A parameterized formula results, and indications are given on how to fit its parameters to experimental data. Application guidelines and charts to fit any case and budget are presented, along with a detailed practical example.

With depletion of traditional clean copper reserves and fast expansion of the global copper demand and smelting capacity in the past decade, more and more copper smelters have to treat copper concentrate with increasing content of complex arsenic-bearing minerals. Developing economically viable and environmentally reliable methods and approaches for arsenic control in copper smelting has become more critical for sustainable growth of the copper industry. This paper will report the recent effort of Zijin Mining Group Ltd. in developing processes for improving arsenic control and management in the Zijin Copper Smelter. The arsenic distribution and balance data for matte smelting, converting and refining operations in Zijin Copper Smelter is reviewed for understanding of the current challenges in arsenic control. The processes developed for treating the arsenic bearing waste acid bleed stream from the smelting-converting off-gases wet cleaning circuit and the arsenic sludge produced in the refining electrolyte purification circuit for arsenic disposal are discussed. INTRODUCTION With fast expansion of the global copper smelting capacity to meet the world copper demand and depletion of traditional clean copper reserves, more and more copper smelters have to treat copper concentrate with an increasing content of complex arsenic-bearing minerals. China is the world largest copper consumer and also has the largest copper smelting and refining capacity, but majority of its smelting capacity relies on supply of imported copper concentrate. In order to meet the increasing copper demand and ease the tight supply of clean copper concentrate, the Chinese copper industry has to look at the domestic opportunity of developing non-traditional copper resources, specifically those of lower grades, more complex mineralogy, and increasing level of deleterious elements especially arsenic and also process imported copper concentrate with increased arsenic content. Due to a significant and growing environmental issue associated with arsenic contamination, developing economically viable and environmentally reliable methods and approaches for arsenic management and control in unlocking the maximum value of such arsenic bearing copper resources has become more critical for sustainable growth of the industry.

Two sulphide dust secondacy explosions have occurred in the mines of the SUdbury operations of Falconbridge Ltd. during the past 18 months. 'Ihe main similarity between the occurrences is that they both happened in vertical crater retreat blasthole stopes. A relatively high p:,v.tier factor was noted in both instances. other details are enumerated and examined, as well as some results of tests done by Noranda Research on company ore samples.

The milling complex, situated just east of the Cassiar townsite, receives raw ore from the tramline and processes it into 105,000 tons per year of milled asbestos fibre. The ore is passed through a concentrator, where a barren rock fraction is removed. The concentrated ore, representing 70% of the feed, is dried, stored and then milled into nine separate fibre classifications. The finished product is packaged into 100-lb bags and loaded into trucks in one-ton units. New air-handling facilities were added in 1977to provide additional air for environmental control.

"The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing and the Nisto deposit are located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin. They are probably unconformity-related. These occurrences tend to be small. The Fond-du-Lac and Maurice Bay deposits are the largest and contain 450,000 kg and 650,000 kg of U10 8 respectively.Pitchblende is the main uranium mineral of all the occurrences, except at Middle Lake where autunite predominates. A II of the deposits are overlain and partially hosted by the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group, except the Nisto deposit which is entirely within basement rocks, and the Maurice Bay deposit which is partially within the basement and overlying the Fair Point Formation of the Athabasca Group.The North Rim deposits are considered to be genetically similar to the other unconformity-type deposits found in northern Saskatchewan. It is suggested that a mechanical concentration of uranium may have occurred in heavy mineral beach sand type placers. The stability of the uranium minerals may have been enhanced by special local conditions. The fossil placers, after hydrothermal alteration and enrichment, would form the apparently ""rootless"" occurrences of uranium found totally within the sandstones above the unconformity.IntroductionAt least five deposits and showings and one train of mineralized glacial erratics of unknown provenance have been located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin from Maurice Bay in the west to Black Lake in the east. Distributed over a distance of 250 km, (Fig. l), they occur near the edge of the Basin, and are probably unconformity-related. The following have been identified from west to east (Fig. 2): The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Isle Brochet train, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing, and the Nisto deposit."

Operational monitoring of slope stability can be achieved by space based InSAR monitoring platforms. Natural and man-made rock slopes are monitored using a novel stack-based InSAR method that exploits both persistent point scatterers (PS) as well as coherent distributed scatterers (DS) such as areas of pavement and sparsely vegetated surfaces. The new method, Homogenous Distributed Scatterer (HDS)-InSAR identifies InSAR targets by using adaptive multilooking of statistically homogenous pixel neighbourhoods combined with thresholding the differential temporal coherence of each target candidate with respect to its surroundings. HDS-InSAR preserves PS and therefore forms a direct generalization to our proven DualScale-PSI method. The density of HDS exceeds that of PS by more than an order of magnitude often providing essentially continuous coverage over urban and industrial landscapes featuring a mix of infrastructure with mostly bare soils or rock surfaces. The improved coverage enables better definition of surface motion and underlying geology, which will lead to superior interpretation of the geophysical mechanisms causing the surface deformation, e.g. through improved integration with 3D deformation modeling. We illustrate the performance of our new HDS-InSAR method compared to DualScale-PSI using displacement results from Vancouver, Canada; Bingham mine, USA; and the Palabora mine, South Africa.

Gold drugs have been used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis since the mid 20th century as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARD) class. Methotrexate is often the preferred DMARD, and with the advent of new therapies gold drugs are now used infrequently. Since the introduction of auranofin in 1985 there has been no new clinically approved gold drug. In spite of this apparent lack of progress there has been a great deal of interest in the use of gold compounds for cancer therapy and early promising indications were achieved with a gold phosphine complex [Au(dppe)2]Cl. This compound was not entered for clinical trials, however, due to problems with cardiotoxicity highlighted during pre-clinical toxicology studies. Gold(III) is isoelectronic (d8) with platinum(II) and likewise forms square planar complexes. It is therefore tempting to speculate that such complexes would have similar antitumor activity to cisplatin. In order to stabilise the gold(III) oxidation cycloaurated complexes were synthesised with a single mononegative bidentate ligand, damp, (2-[(dimethylamino)methyl]phenyl), and two monodentate anionic ligands e.g. Cl or acetate. The damp ligand forms part of a five-membered chelate ring. The monodentate ligands are readily hydrolysed and are available for substitution. These compounds had limited anti-tumor activity in in vivo against human tumor xenografts. Mechanistic studies indicated that these compounds had a different mechanism of action to cisplatin. An alternative molecular target for these compounds is biologically important thiol-containing molecules such as the cysteine protease cathepsin B. Modifications were made to the Au(III) damp structure to give compounds with a six-membered chelate ring. These compounds were shown to be inhibitors of cathepsin B. Compounds were also tested for cytotoxicity against a panel of human tumor cell lines. Three compounds were selected for further evaluation against a human colon tumor xenograft. The compounds showed modest anti-tumor activity but with no marked improvement over the parent Au(III)damp complexes. Initial indications are that Au(III) compounds targeted against disease-specific thiol-containing biological molecules have potential as drugs, particularly for cancer. However, further work is required to produce a target-specific drug with a suitable pharmacological activity and toxicity profile.

"I would like to comment on the classification scheme of ore reserves based on geestatistical and economic parameters as proposed by Wober and Morgan in the CIM Bulletin, January 1993.In principle, a classification system that combines quantitative data for levels of confidence and errors with economic expectations must be welcomed. I would like to point out, however, two aspects of the proposed classification system which might create ambiguities, and therefore problems, by working with two levels of confidence and two kinds of block sizes. A normal classification scheme reflects the information density, the highest reserve category such as class A, or proven, or measured reserves having the highest density. This is not necessarily the case in the scheme of Wober and Morgan (1993), unless the definitions are amended.I. Assuming, as the authors do, that the estimation errors show an approximately normal clistribution, at the 95% confidence level, the standard deviation has to be multiplied by about 2 for the error and, at the 84% confidence level by about 104. Reserves (or resources) with the same or even higher information density than class A reserves, which at the 95% confidence level would not fulfill the required economic criteria at the threshold level, i.e. not qualify as ""ore"" at all, could be retained ""on paper"" to class B reserves by just multiplying the standard deviation by the factor 104 instead of 2, thereby narrowing the error.This statistical ambiguity was partly inherent in the old German classification scheme which used varying confidence levels and errors (GDMB 1956; Jahns 1959). In the new German scheme, which was later adopted in Austria in a moclified version, the level of confidence was therefore fixed at 90070 for all reserve categories (Wellmer 1983; ONORM 1989)."

"An interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile has been developed for modelling oil sands mining operations. The model is to be used in conj unction with models of other oil sands mining equipment, such as bucket-wheel excavators and reclaimers, conveyors, hoppers, bins, trucks and shovels, to study mining operations on a minute-by-minute basis. From the orebody description and mining selectivity, layers of ore and reject are determined and mined by the dragline. Reject is dumped on the pit floor; ore is either dumped on a windrow for later removal by a bucket-wheel reclaimer or directly dumped into a hopper feeding a conveyor. The model allows for the presence of pads as a dragline base, key cuts and a number of interruptions to the mining operation such as shift changes, boom checks, engineering services, repairs, delays, preventative maintenance, etc. A CRT display keeps the model operator informed about equipment status and performance. The model operator can direct the course of the simulation by issuing commands to the model at any time during the simulation.IntroductionThis paper describes an interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile. The model was designed by the author based on information and specifications provided by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. The model design was implemented and tested on Petro-Canda's IBM computer system by DMR and Associates Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta.The model was designed to form three components of an oil sands mining operations model, described in reference I. Figure 1 shows the interaction of those components with the remainder of the oil sands mining model.An ""Ore/Waste Body"" data base provides information to the dragline model about the location and composition of or e and waste in the mine. The dragline model is used to simulate mining this ore/waste body, to build up spoil piles for center reject (waste) and to dump ore onto windrows or hoppers (situated over conveyors) to deliver the ore to the extraction plant. The windrow model component provides a data base which will be used by a model of a bucket-wheel reclaimer which simulates the loading of ore from the windrow on to a conveyor via a bridge."

This paper describes the problems encountered and the steps taken to solve them in milling an ore containing relatively large amounts of pyrrhotite. A complex and greatly lengthened flotation circuit was required to recover the pyrrhotite. A very low pH had to be maintained in the cyanide circuit in order to get good recovery of the gold and maintain reasonable cyanide recovery. Introduction D ELNITE Mines Ltd., a gold mine situated about 5 miles by road south and east of the town of Timmins, Ontario, is serviced by two shafts. No. 2 shaft extends from surface to the 2875-ft. level, and No. 3 shaft, an internal winze, extends from the 2875-to the 5275-ft. level. No. 2 shaft was stopped at the 2875-ft. level because of a heavy band of chloritic schist which necessitated a drive to the north for 1000 feet, where No. 3 shaft was sunk. "A t last the legal red tape which has tied up flow-through share financing has been cut. New rules effective for deals signed after 1986 simplify flow-through financing by removing the necessity f or cumbersome agency relationships. But there is no free lunch-the new rules require increased government reporting. And beware federal tax reform promises to have a good look at the new flow-through share rules. IntroductionFlow-through shares have always worked better in theory then reality as an effective financing tool. The concept is straightforward: a transfer of risks, tax deductions, and potential returns. But the mechanics of the old flow-through rules made the transfer of risk impractical to impossible by placing the responsibility for incurring Canadian exploration expense (CEE) on investors. The new rules are significantly more realistic, shifting that responsibility to the issuing corporation. However, every silver lining must have a few clouds around it. In the case of the new flow-through rules, the more obvious negatives are increased reporting requirements and reductions in CEE eligible for flow-through by amounts of assistance received. The new rules are effective for deals signed after 1986, however, so a few old-style deals are still around. Practical Difficulties with Old RulesThe old rules which applied to investments in flow-through shares were structured so as to make it the responsibility of the investor, rather than the issuing corporation, to perform the Canadian exploration expense for flow-through. Since most investors had neither the expertise nor the inclination to incur the CEE, this requirement necessitated the use of cumbersome arrangements whereby the investors would appoint an agent (usually the issuing corporation) to incur CEE on their behalf. Although the issuing corporation might consequently be the party which actually spends the flow-through share funds on CEE, the awkward legal structure of such an arrangement made the investor the ""principal"" incurring the CEE. As such, the requirements of the old rules were met and the investors could receive their flow-through share s."

This paper studied the phenomenon of room temperature creep deformation at crack tip and its effect on fatigue crack growth rate of a X-70 pipeline steel using compact-tension (CT) specimen on a MTS 810 testing machine. Time-dependent deformation at the crack tip under constant load was observed in this steel at room temperature and the amount of deformation produced was seen to depend on loading rate and the magnitude of stress intensity factor. It is found that there exists a critical stress intensity factor below which the deformation decreases with time when the applied load remains constant. It is also found that the occurrence of room temperature creep obviously affects the subsequent fatigue crack growth rate. The observed behavior was explained based on dislocation theory.

Princess colliery is operated by Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, a direct descendant of the General Mining Association of London, England, which, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, pioneered in coal mining in Nova Scotia. The coal worked is a 5 ft. 6 in. seam known generally through the Sydney coalfield as the Harbour seam but referred to locally as the Sydney Main. Entry is made by shafts, 680 feet deep, sunk in 1871 on a headland forming the northern entrance to Sydney harbour. From them extend the main roadways of the colliery, a distance of 700 feet to the shore line and a further distance of 14,700 feet in submarine areas to a total length of 15,400 feet. It was the first colliery in Nova Scotia designed to work submarine areas. Lateral development extends across a frontage of 16,000 feet and the submarine area from which the coal has been extracted is slightly over 6 square miles. There yet remains sufficient territory ahead of the workings to assure a future life to this colliery estimated at over 80 years at the current rate of production. In this area the seam dips at 6 to 7 per cent and face workings have reached a depth of 1,690 feet below the sea level. Until 1923 extraction of the coal was by room-and-pillar, followed by the drawing of the pillars. At that date the superincumbent strata had reached a thickness of 1,400 feet, resulting in heavy weighting on the roof and severe side pressure on the coal ribs. In combination with a soft, heaving pavement this created a set of conditions involving great difficulties and expense in keeping open places driven in the solid sufficiently long to permit recovery of the coal in the pillars by methods and equipment then available. The operator was forced to resort to extraction by longwall as the only economical method of winning the coal.

MR. A. F. B. Norwood: Having been associated in the past few years with nine different plants roasting aurif erous concentrates in Australia, two of which were new installations for which design and construction were undertaken by the writer, I read Mr. Archibald's paper with very great interest, and I deem it a great privilege, as a member of a sister Institution, to be invited to contribute to the discussion on the paper. I wish to congratulate the author on a very informative and interesting paper, and, although situated many thousands of miles away, I feel I have gathered from it a very close idea of the operating conditions and of the work that has been carried on at the Beattie gold mine. Working along somewhat different lines, it is interesting to note that the conclusions drawn by the author run closely parallel to those accepted in Western Australia, viz., that the object of roasting is to obtain a porous calcine, and that this can best be achieved by roasting first at a temperature below 900 deg. F. to 1,000 deg. F., and then raising the temperature at the finish of the roast. Turning first to the laboratory work, the materials I have studied in Western Australia cover a range from those with little or no arsenic to concentrates carrying as high ?as 20 per cent, i.e., even higher than in the analysis quoted for the eoncentrates from Nepheline Products, Limited. In the ease of arsenic-free pyrite concentrates, the roast is ideally carried out at a temperature ranging from 900 deg. F. to 1,000 ferric oxide is one cause of the refractory gold remaining In deg. F. No improvement in extraction is obtained when the calcines are cyanided by raising the final temperature above this point; nevertheless, in technical practice it is desirable to finish the roast at 1,200 deg. F. in order to decompose basic ferric sulphate and thereby reduce the consumption of chemicals in the subsequent cyanidation step. However, if at any stage of the roast the temperature is raised above 1,200 deg. F., the extraction by cyanidation falls, and continues to do so the higher the maximum temperature that is reached. Line A in the accompanying graph typifies this effect.

"IntroductionThis chapter is intended to provide information on the operation and maintenance of several pieces of equipment used in heavy media separation. Most heavy media separation circuits, particularly those involving bath separators can be considered as high maintenance areas. Because of this the efficient operation and maintenance of these circuits is very important if the cost per ton of material treated is to be kept to an acceptable level.Heavy media separation (HMS), is a process used to separate particles of different specific gravities. Under laboratory conditions the ideal way to separate two types of particles which have different specific gravities is to suspend them in a heavy liquid which has a specific gravity between those of the two types of particles. Those particles with the lower specific gravities will float on top of the liquid while the higher specific gravity material will sink to the bottom. Given enough time and a sufficient volume of heavy liquid this process will be essentially insensitive to the sizes of the particles involved.Heavy media separation circuits make use of the same principles described above. The material to be treated is introduced into a mixture of finely ground solids, called media, and water which takes the place of the heavy liquid; the mixture of solids and water is known as medium. The separating force can be either gravity or centrifugal force. The type of solids used as media varies but it is usually a high specific gravity material such as magnetite, galena or ferrosilicon.Heavy media separation is used extensively in the cleaning of coal and to a lesser extent as a preconcentration step in base metal and iron ore operations."

"Fording Coal Limited is one of Canada's largest producers of metallurgical coal for the export market. Medium- to highvolatile coals are mined at its Fording River operations in southeastern British Columbia. This paper discusses some of the mine design and production related problems encountered, and how they have been resolved. Other aspects of the operation such as geography, geology and standard mining methods employed are also covered.IntroductionFording Coal Limited was formed in 1968 to mine and market metallurgical coal resources held by the company in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia<1>. The company, at its Fording River operations, holds approximately 19,635 hectares of coal lands, having an estimated resource of 3.5 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal. Total reserves are approximately 520 million tonnes.Fording Coal is owned 600Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises Limited and 400Jo by Cominco Limited. Cominco itself is owned approximately 540Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises. The company, originally staffed and managed by Cominco, has been independent since January 1978, with its own board of directors, management, staff and employees. The head office is in Calgary, Alberta. The Fording River operations are located in British Columbia, approximately 70 km north of the Crowsnest Pass, near the Alberta/ British Columbia boundary, only 150 km by air and 320 km by road from Calgary.A contract was signed in 1969 with the Japanese steel mills to provide 45. 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal over fifteen years, commencing in 1972, at an annual rate of 3 .05 million tonnes per year. The mine is presently expanding annual production capacity from the original 3.0 million long tons (3.05 million tonnes) to in excess of 5.0 million tonnes.Concurrent with this production expansion, a vigorous marketing effort has diversified Fording's customers to include additional countries in the Pacific Rim area. Three cleaned coal products are now marketed compared to the single ""standard blend"" product originally shipped to satisfy the Japanese contract. The product specifications are listed in Table I."

"Flow of traffic in the underground mine has been improved through the years with clever use of traffic lights. The evolution is characterized by three major design changes. This paper will scan the basic criteria of these designs.IntroductionMines Gaspe, formerly known as Gaspe Copper Mines Limited, is a member of the Noranda Group of companies. The mine is the ""raison d&apos;etre"" of the town of Murdochville, located 600 m above sea level on the Gaspe Peninsula. Paved highways link the town with Gaspe, 95 km to the east, and with Anse Pleureuse, 400 km to the north, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence.The low-grade copper mineralization was discovered in 1921 at Copper Mountain by local prospectors, the Miller brothers. Noranda Mines Limited obtained an interest in the property in 1937. World War II interrupted exploration work and it was not until 195I that a decision was made to bring the property into production.Initially, operations were confined to the Needle Mountain underground deposits which commenced production in 1955. Between 1968 and 1982, low-grade ore from the Mountain open pit supplemented the production. Due to the depressed market, surface and underground operations were suspended in 1982. Needle Mountain underground mining resumed in the second half of 1984, but the Copper Mountain open-pit operation remained idle. Since 1979, more than 75 km of exploration drilling resulted in the discovery of two new deposits, one which is located under the town of Murdochville . Mines Gaspe&apos;s present ore reserve, approximating 8 million tonnes, will be depleted by the end of 1992."

"IntroductionThe ion exchange process is classed as a purification and concentration stage. In the uranium industry it is used to separate, and recover uranium, from a solution produced in the leach and subsequent solid washing circuit, that contains uranium as well as some impurities. The final product from this circuit is a solution, containing uranium at a 15 to 25 fold increase in concentration, with a chemical composition suitable for the ""Precipitation"" circuit.The process is a reversible chemical ""ION"" exchange, between a solution, and solid phase, with the ""resin"" being the solid phase. Various chemical changes in the solution phase will permit the resin to remove uranium from a solution or have the uranium removed from the resin back into a solution phase. The former loads uranium onto the resin, and is called the ""adsorption cycle"", and the removal or stripping is known as the ""elution cycle"".Ion Exchange resin is a semi-rigid polystyrene spherical bead, approximately 10 to 30 mesh. It is used by placing the resin in a vessel, so that a porous bed of resin is formed, through which the solution may flow.There are many different types of vessels, and systems used to hold the resin, but it is not the intention of this chapter to describe them all, but to describe two methods used in Elliot Lake. These are the ""fixed bed"", and ""moving bed"" systems, the condition of the bed during normal operation signifies the name of the system.Chemical and Physical Characteristicslon Exchange ResinThe resin used is a strange base Anionic resin, semi-rigid, and spherical in shape. The size of the wet resin is approximately 9007o between 20 and 40 mesh. Physically the beads of resin are broken early, but some have lasted over 15 years and are still in use."
