"The challenge of ""ore bodies getting steadily harder and lower in grade"" was brought to light during the first oil crisis in the 70's. Shortly afterwards, HPGRs appeared on the scene with the promise of saving energy. This combined with developments in wear protection for the rolls ushered in a period of trade-off studies that considered the HPGR as an option to improve project economics or to even make projects feasible at all.Since then, applications of HPGRs at Cerro Verde (Freeport), PTFI Grasberg (Freeport), Mogalakwena (Anglo Platinum), Tarkwa (Goldfields), Boddington (Newmont), Penasquito (Goldcorp), and others have contributed to the creation of a formidable basket of operating experience. Collected through years of successful operation, this information has been used to validate design criteria, scale-up factors and establishing a clearer picture of what ""to do"" and what ""not to do"".This paper compares results from various mining operations using HPGRs in their processing plants. Some of the lessons learnt in different operating environments are reviewed in order to support proper implementation and operation of HPGR's. Some of the development programs that have been initiated to improve wear life of the tyres and to reduce overall operating costs are reviewed. It is timely to summarize today’s experience and analyse its implications for existing and new operations"

In this research, providing the sustainability of production quality was aimed for a quarry which is located in Istanbul western part of Turkey and producing concrete aggregates with different types of rock. First, research field was divided in 3 different areas in accordance with the geological differences and parameters that control their product quality, limit values of standards and effect levels were determined. Concrete aggregate conformity tests which are stated in international standards were applied on samples which were taken from these 3 different areas and physical, geometric and chemical properties of each rock type were revealed. The properties of the 3 different types of rock which were produced in the quary were determined and the binary blends were composed. Blending studies were conducted with linear programming technique. In the linear programming model, the cost of aggregate production was aimed to be minimal. The limit values that meet literature and national standards for usability of aggregates in concrete were defined as constraints in the linear programming model and evaluated with objective functions, thus the most suitable aggregate blends were composed. In conclusion, to provide the sustainability of product quality, the most appropriate product blends were composed for the research field and the usability of this model for those quarries were revealed.

"The Geology of the Cochenour Willans mine, Red Lake district, was described by J. P. Nowlan in the Jubilee Volume. The complexity and intense alteration of the rocks obscured any clear relationship between ore and structure, and Nowlan recognized that future work might greatly modify the ideas then existing. This has proved to be the case. Subsequent detailed work has established the stratigraphic sequence in the Keewatin formations which are the host rocks of the orebodies, and has shown that the principal orebodies are confined to two adjoining bands of tuff.On this basis, it is now possible to map the complex structures with greatly increased accuracy. The amount of drilling and underground exploration required to find new ore has been much reduced, and indicated ore reserves are now substantially greater than at any time in the past. Daily production in 1955 averaged 187 tons per day at 0.578 ounces of gold per ton.The sequence of Precambrian events in the mine area is summarized in the following table:Intrusion of post-ore dykes.Ore formation.Intrusion of post-faulting, pre-ore dykes.Deformation: folding and shearing; alteration; faulting.Timiskaming sedimentation.Unconformity.Keewatin: volcanics and sediments, host rocks of the orebodies, described in detail in the next section.KeewatinFrom oldest to youngest, the Keewatin rocks in the mine area can be divided into six formations, which have been given local names:“Grey"" LavaA fine-grained dacitic to andesitic lava, amygdaloidal and locally containing well formed pillows. Certain areas are sheared and chloritized to a degree that makes identification difficult. The rocks are carbonatized throughout; the most persistent carbonate veins parallel the upper contact. "Two recent decisions by the Canadian courts could reduce the taxes paid by many profitable mines in Canada. At a time when the mining sector is hurting from an ever increasing tax burden and soft prices, the results of two cases are welcome news. Mining companies are well advised to check prior years' tax returns in the context of these developments. IntroductionSince 1976, the income tax legislation has provided a reduced rate of tax for taxpayers engaged in the mining of mineral resources, through the mechanism of the ""resource allowance"". The deduction given for the resource allowance effectively reduces the federal rate of tax by one quarter on resource profits. In general terms, ""resource profits"" are defined to include a taxpayer's income from: the production and processing in Canada of ore to any stage that is not beyond the prime metal stage (or the pellet stage or its equivalent in the case of iron ore); and, royalties computed with reference to the amount of value of production from mining operations in Canada.In computing income from these sources, the taxpayer must deduct expenses that may reasonably be regarded as applicable to those sources, with the exception of expenditures for Canadian exploration and development or financing costs.As a result of the mechanics of the calculation of the resource allowance, one quickly realizes that the lower the expenses deducted from the resource profits, the higher the resource profits and consequently the higher the 25% resource allowance. The impact of the recent court cases is to narrow the range of expenses which are required to be deducted in the determination of the resource profits.The two cases are outlined below."

"The electrodissolution of nickel pellets with different controlled electrical variables was investigated in an effort to mitigate plating residue in Watts bath based electroplating cells. During galvanostatic dissolution at 0.4 A dm-2, the anode potential was seen to oscillate between passive and pitting potentials. In-situ microscopy and ex-situ characterization has shown that lacy-pit formation and large, partially perforated, pit covers form during the potential decay from pitting potentials. In general, covered pitting at low current density shows increased plating residue. Using potential pulses is one way to maintain greater control over surface pitting by creating a higher density of pit nuclei while at the same time controlling their growth. Pits generated from a series potential pulses were examined ex situ for a range of pulse times and stages of pit growth were identified. An alternative method of anode dissolution was devised using potential pulses and duty cycles that allowed average current densities comparable to industrial plating conditions to be achieved. By restricting the time at pitting potentials to 0.05 s, plating residue was reduced more than six-fold in comparison to an equivalent galvanostatic experiment run at a comparable current density.INTRODUCTIONIn typical galvanostatic (direct current) nickel electroplating cells employing soluble anodes, some amount of plating residue is produced which consists of metallic nickel and impurities that detach from the bulk in the form of small fines. Significant buildup of residue requires plating operations be halted and the anode assembly cleaned of residue before operation can resume. While variables in the refining process have been shown to affect plating residue, more precise control of electrochemical variables may provide an attractive route to mitigation of residue."

"Canada's largest known chromite deposit occurs in a layered intrusion in the Bird River area of Manitoba. However, numerically most of the chromite occurrences are in the Appalachians. Few, apparently minor, occurrences are also known in the Cordillera.In the Appalachians, chromite occurs as lenses and pods in dunite; they are of ""podiform"" type. The individual concentrations vary in size from a few pounds to tens of thousands of tons. Locally, chromite concentrations form discontinuous zones extending several hundred feet along strike and presumably down dip, therefore resembling boudinaged layers. Chromite layering and lineation are commonly concordant to those of the host rocks.The Appalachian chromite occurrences are thought to have been formed by fractional crystallization and perhaps also by liquid immiscibility. Their present shape and distribution are largely the result of deformation mostly prior to complete solidification of their host rocks. Therefore, the attitude of layering, foliation, lineation and other features related to deformation provide valuable guides in predicting the probable distribution of chromite, and hence are helpful in exploration.Chromites fulfilling the requirements for metallurgical, refractory and chemical grades occur in the Appalachians. Although the Appalachian deposits are similar in size and grade to some of the chromite deposits being mined elsewhere, they are unlikely to be economic, at present, in the higher wage Canadian environment. However, in case of shortages in chromite ore supply which may result, among other reasons, from increasing tendency to further processing in the producing countries, the Appalachian occurrences may become sources of ore. Such eventual shortages combined with relative abundance of electricity in Canada and recent innovations in oxide ore reduction technology may hasten the time when ferrochrome manufacture based on local chromite sources becomes economically viable."

THE growth and development of the assay department of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, is a similar story to that of the mine itself. As the mine developed and enlarged, so also increased the demands upon this department, necessitating an increase of capacity for fire assaying and a widening of the scope of work to include chemical analysis, metallurgical tests, research, and screen analysis. The yearly total of determinations, taking an average for the past six years, is approximately 350,000. The major portion of this figure represents fire assaying for gold and silver, being approximately 950 fire assays per day. The assay department occupies the ground floor of the administration building and covers approximately 4,000 square feet of floor space. Ready access is had by motor truck and electric railway for the delivery of samples and the removal of crushed rock and rubbish. The combined weight of all sample rejects amounts to about 5,000 lb. per day, which is sent to the mill bins. There are six departments, each occupying a separate room-grinder room, fluxing room, furnace room, parting room, weighing room, and flux-mixing and storage room.

"This paper tells the story of how the Dome Mine in South Porcupine increased its maintenance effectiveness and reduced its maintenance costs in two phases. In the first phase, a maintenance audit was conducted, and the results led to some changes that improved maintenance, especially in the underground equipment area. The audit methods, and the changes made will be reviewed. In the second phase, management made changes in the maintenance organization and methods, following a prolonged strike during which management operated the mine. These changes were in part the result of insights learned from their hands-on operating experience. IntroductionEarly in 1989 the Dome Mine of Placer Dome Inc. in South Porcupine, Ontario, decided to improve the effectiveness of the Plant Department. The Plant Department was centralized, except for a mill mechanical crew, and serviced all operations, a townsite of 120 houses, a curling rink, and an arena. The department also operated the powerhouse, the hoists, the mine dry and provided mechanical/ electrical engineer services.At that time the Dome Mine, located in the east end of the city of Timmins and Canada's first large gold mine originally discovered in 1909, was producing about 3500 tons of ore per day with about 742 employees. Over the 83 years of continuous operation of Dome over 50 million short tons of gold ore have been processed. The Plant Department consisted of 156 hourly and 24 staff employees. At present, the mine is producing 4000 tons of ore per day with a total of 341 employees on the payroll. The Plant Department consists of 80 hourly-rated and 18 staff employees."

"The physical processes occurring in flotation columns are very complex as they take place at different scales over a range of sizes and multiple phases. Column design and optimum operating parameters are usually obtained from empirical studies and although progress has been made on its numerical modelling, most column models rely on simplifications that do not fully capture the hydrodynamics. In particular, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of the pulp phase in flotation usually assume the bubble population to be monodispersed. While this assumption may be reasonable in some situations, the polydispersed nature of the gas phase can have a significant impact on the predicted flotation rates.Techniques to model size distribution do exist in the literature and have been rigorously analysed in the past two decades for bubble columns, which are very similar to flotation columns from a hydrodynamics point of view. In fact, available CFD models of flotation columns are an extension of bubble column models, sometimes including additional equations for solids treated as passive scalars. This work focuses on the development of an efficient CFD model for flotation columns. The bubble size distribution in the column has been modelled using the Population Balance Equation (PBE), which is solved using the Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (DQMOM). Coupled with the PBE, the multiphase flow equations in the column have been modelled using the standard Eulerian–Eulerian approach. The solution of this coupled system has been made tractable in this work with the implementation of a highly parallelised adaptive-mesh finite element method. This powerful framework has been implemented in the open source CFD code Fluidity and it allows the carrying out of detailed simulations of flotation columns in 2D and 3D, with important implications for industrial column evaluation and design."

In 1987, John Schloen published a survey and analysis of copper electrorefining tank room data. Following this paper, a series of copper electrorefining surveys have been conducted and presented at each of the Copper-Cobre meetings over the past 20+ years (1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013). For each of these surveys, William Davenport has been key driving force in the collection and analysis of data. To honour Professor Davenport’s contribution to copper processing, a review of the data was conducted. Historic trends and possible future technologies are discussed.

IN the past, the Cadomin Coal Company has opened four mines, all in the same coal seam or its folds. Three of these were opened from river level by horizontal entries or rock tunnels, and the fourth, the present working mine, by vertical shafts. This paper deals largely with some operating phases of this fourth mine, with which the writer has been associated. The seam worked here is a thick, steep, bituminous seam, and the writer feels there is a paucity of published data on the mining of such seams. Possible reasons for this are that such seams do not !end themselves to intensive development or mining, there is little chance to mechanize because of the extreme pitch, and operations are fraught with many problems. In addition, the present operations in this particular seam are being carried on at a level below the former workings, introducing new problems, not en-countered on the upper level. Coal will, without question, long continue to be an important factor in the national economy, and some of the best coal is to be found in thick, steep seams. But with the exhaustion of the easily-mined coal near the outcrops, future coal will have to come more and more from lower levels. At Cadomin there is still considerable coal on the second level, below the old river-workings, and there is a possibility that, in the future, still lower levels will be worked. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate some phases of such lower-level operations and to invite discussion.

"The key words which characterize vanadium are: unlimited availability, versatility of applications and price stability. The supply of vanadium is assured by diversified sources, distributed all over the globe. The inexhaustible raw materials base is complemented by a strong vanadium industry. Both the fully integrated vanadium producers and converters of vanadium oxide or vanadium-containing slags or residues guarantee an adequate supply, commensurate with the steady growing demand.The major share of the world's vanadium output is being consumed by the steel industry. As an additive to steel, the versatility of vanadium is particularly impressive. A few hundreds of one per cent of vanadium convert plain carbon steel into high-strength, low-alloy steel with more than double strength. On the other extreme, high-speed steels made via the powder metallurgy route show superior performance with vanadium additions as high as 6 or 8 percent. Vanadium is used as a cost-effective alloying addition in steels for high-temperature service, fully alloyed heat-treatable steels, new dual-phase steels for automotive components, rail steels, etc., to mention only a few applications. Vanadium is also an established essential addition for titanium alloys. The chemical industry is relying on vanadium compounds as important catalysts.In spite of a wide diversity of applications and continual growth in consumption, vanadium has exhibited, over the past several decades, a remarkable price stability, free of conjunctural fluctuations. "Drums containing 0.07 m3 of pyritic waste rock from a zinc/copper mine, with and without Natural Phosphate Rock (NPR) additions (40 kg/t waste rock) were set up outdoors. The effluent chemistry has been monitored over a period of 709 days. In the presence of NPR, the cumulative acidity discharged from 7 out of 8 drums was 80 % less than that discharged from drums without NPR. Mixing NPR throughout the drums was more effective in reducing acidity than placement of the NPR in a layer in the drum. NPR treatment was more effective for 'fresh' waste rock than for material which had weathered for more than 4 years. It is concluded that application of NPR to pyritic waste rock could greatly reduce acidity generated.IntroductionWaste rock dumps are significant sources of acid, generated by the oxidation of sulphides. Oxygen and water supply are oxidation rate-controlling factors, and oxygen supply is the reaction-limiting component. If secondary minerals can be formed on the surface of the rocks, pyrite oxidation and therefore acid generation may be reduced or inhibited. Neutralizing agents such as limestone do not prevent the oxidation of pyrite but treat the resultant acid mine drainage (AMD) or acid rock drainage (ARD).Meek et al. (1991) determined in pilot scale experiments that apatite mixed with tailings was more cost effective than liming or use of PVC liners to reduce oxygen and water penetration into the tailings. Phosphate is not acting as a neutralising agent but it creates a chemical condition on pyritic surfaces which prevents reactions of the oxidising agents. Precipitation of principally iron phosphates physically isolates the pyrite surfaces from further oxidation (Ziemkiewicz 1990; Evangelou 1994). The chemistry of the phosphate effects has been described by Spotts and Dollhopf (1990). Secondary mineral formation was evident in the leach pile at Gibraltar when leaching was impaired (Scott, 1991) indicating a link between oxidation and the mineral-formation process. This paper reports on effluent characteristics when waste rock is generating acid in the presence of NPR."

"Managing safety on the basis of after-the-fact reaction to accidents, can never be more than partially successful. Injuries will occur as long as the underlying potential for them still exists. Unless unsafe actions and conditions are systematically decreased, no program can have more than a short-term success.The pro-active Bullmoose loss control process, instead, focusses on heightening awareness of work habits, to prevent incidents by reducing their potential.Any safety program will be doomed to failure if the development of safe work habits depends on the safety supervisor or a safety committee. At Bullmoose the focus is on the critical actions out of which losses emerge. The successful application of performance-related feedback is achieved by taking safety, health, and environmental concerns into consideration on every level, and, by doing the right thing in every job done.What is an Exceptional Loss Control Program?If an accident in an organization creates a flurry of interest, resulting in ""cracking down"" on violations for a short period of time then an ""exceptional"" loss control program exists. Unfortunately, exceptional here does not refer to the effectiveness of quality of the program but to the fact that the organization is managing loss control by exception. The degree of management attention in an ""exceptional"" safety program varies over a period of time, remaining low as long as the rate of losses stays within management's acceptable control limit (Fig. I). When the losses rise above this, management becomes motivated to begin ""exceptional"" efforts to manage losses. When the rate falls again to within the accepted limit, efforts to control losses take a back seat.Such a strategy guarantees that losses will be tolerated or ignored as long as the actual rate is below the acceptable limit. Simply to lower the limit would not reduce losses, but would result in an increased number of flurries of management attention to loss control. This ""on-again, off-again"" style of management teaches supervisors and others that basic loss control is not as important as are statistics."

"Equity Silver Mines Limited owns and operates an open pit silver 111ine located 37 km southeast of Houston in the Omineca District of British Columbia, Figure l. The property is approximately 300 km west of Prince George and 417 km east of the Port of Prince Rupert. This is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the five largest silver producers in the western world.Equity is a subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, which owns 70 of Equity's issued and outstanding Common Shares. Placer was responsible for financing and developing the property and now provides general management and administrative services.All mining is by open pit methods, using three 1600 P&H shovels, eight 45 t Caterpillar and three 77 t Wabco trucks, three 40R rotary drills, two D8 dozers, one 9888 front-end loader and other ancillary equipment. We are now phasing out the Southern Tail pit and bringing the Main Zone into productior; see Figure 2.Comminution in the concentrator is achieved via primary, secondary, and tertiary crushers followed by rod and ball mills. The flotation circuit, with Southern Tail ore, produces a concentrate containing between 3 000 and 6 500 g of silver per tonne, 201 copper, and 25 g of gold per tonne. Running Main Zone ore, concentrate grades will decrease to about 4 500 g of silver per tonne, 17% copper, and 18 g of gold per tonne. Design milling capacity is 5 300 tpd, which is often exceeded.The flotation concentrate contains relatively high levels of antimony and arsenic. Because of these impurities Equity was unable to obtain economically acceptable long-term sales contracts for flotation concentrate. For this reason a leaching process was developed, and a plant designed, built and placed in operation. Due to the complex and unique technology involved, many start-up problems were encountered but by March 1983 the leach plant was considered ""fully operational."" This paper describes some of our progress and problems in bringing the Equity leach plant through its start-up period."

This article summarizes some of the principal features of the taxation of industrial mineral mining in Canada. Where the rules applicable to such operations differ from those pertaining to the production and processing of precious and base meta s (non-industrial minerals), the two sets of rules are compared. If a conclusion could be drawn from such an over-all comparison, it may be that the total tax burden on an industrial mineral mine can be considerably more onerous than on both base meta mining operations and manufacturing profits.

A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the pilot scale for the extraction of gold. Mineralogical analysis of the concentrate identified gold to be mainly present in the form of a solid solution in pyrite. This gold distribution resulted in a poor extraction yield of 55% by direct cyanidation. A piloting campaign including an oxidative pre-treatment by roasting in a fluid bed was followed by treatment with halogens for gold extraction has led to a gold extraction yield of 96.5%. Sulphur removal during the oxidation was very efficient at >99.5% and gold extraction by the halogens was completed within a 1 hour contact time. The piloting was performed on a 300 kg sample and uses a diluted solution of hypohalites as the oxidizing agent for gold extraction. Sulphuric acid was injected in the reactor during the halogens treatment to lower pH to 2. The diluted solution of hypohalites (1-3%) was generated by electrolysis during the piloting campaign in a membrane-less electrolysis cell. The extracted gold was recovered over activated carbon in column and the gold depleted brine was treated for impurities removal and recycled for further gold extraction. With the recycling of water and brine, the regeneration of hypohalites and with a barren solid that is inert and stable, the Nichromet Extraction technology is a green process where the protection of the environment does not preclude profitability.
