ABSTRACT: The ground-source heat pump is a low-carbon technology that uses the earth’s renewable geothermal energy to heat and cool buildings, with an ef?ciency 3 to 4.5 times that of conventional systems. These high performances are achieved by exchanging heat with the earth using a ?uid that is groundwater, surface water or closed loop water. Expensive installations, such as water wells or buriedcoils, are however necessary to transport the ?uid in and out of the earth, making ground-source heat pumps more costly than conventional systems. Installation costs can be reduced in mining environments due to the abundance and the accessibility of resources to be used with heat pumps. Examples of system design calculations using data from the Mouska and Doyon mines in Abitibi show signi?cant installation cost savings using dewatering mine water or ground heat exchangers installed below oxidizing waste rocks. Ground-source heat pump technology is reviewed and scoping calculations are presented to illustrate how such systems can be installed in mining environments.

"Potentially economic stratiform barite-sulphide deposits have recently been discovered in Devonian basinal facies rocks of the Kechika Trough of northeast British Columbia. This new mineral district is over 180 kilometres long and includes nine major occurrences, namely Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Fluke, Pie, Elf, Kwadacha and Sika. The Cirque is the largest known deposit, with reserves of atleast 30 million tonnes averaging 10per cent combined lead-zinc and 47 grams per tonne silver. The footwall rocks for the Cirque and other strati/rom barite-sulphide deposits in the area are rhythmically bedded baritic and pyritic carbonaceous black shales, siliceous argillites and cherts of probable Mid to Late Devonian age. These siliceous rocks overlie a succession of proximal to distal turbidites which are the basinal equivalent of Early to Mid Devonian carbonate reefs to the east. The siliceous facies is overlain by deeper-water black shales of probable Late Devonian to Mississippian age.Preliminary stratigraphic and sedimentological investigations suggest that the strati/arm massive pyrite and bedded barite deposits formed in third-order euxinic basins within a northwest-trending structurally controlled trough which, in the southern part of the district, was bounded by carbonate reefs. The exhalative event, which appears to have been accompanied by synsedimentary faulting, took place during the early stages of a major eastward-directed marine transgression that was probably related to rapid crustal subsidence. Dewatering of metal-enriched shales and subsequent brine discharge along fault zones within the trough, with the exhaled brines accumulating in seafloor depressions, is the mechanism envisaged for formation of the deposits. Convective circulation systems may have been established about the more deep-seated faults, in response to elevated heat flow levels."

"The above committee sent out a questionnaire to the gold mines for the purpose of learning what units and methods are currently in use in the mines as the first step in an attempt to agree on standard units to be used in any papers or reports that may be given to other mines or presented at meetings. The next step is to try to arrive at acceptable standard units for reporting and methods of making tests. It was suggested by Mr. J. Jardine of Eldorado Mining and Refining that the use of the metric system should be seriously considered. It was also brought out that there was no intention of having any mine change their methods to the standard for internal reporting as this would involve too much change. "This paper introduces a new approach for the design of rib pillars. The approach involves an empirical method for pillar design and a discussion of the pillar stability used for open stope mining methods.The empirical method predicts the degree of stability of rib pillars. Pillar load is estimated using two and three dimensional numerical modelling. Rock strength and the shape effect of pillars are used to account for pillar strength. The method has been calibrated with case histories from Canadian open stope metal mines and is compared with other methods used [or pillar design.INTRODUCTIONThe role of rib pillars in open stope mining is to provide stability to a mining block by limiting rock mass displacements and restricting the exposure of a rock mass in stope backs and stope walls. They also provide flexibility in ore extraction by dividing a stope block into multiple working faces.The use of backfill in open stope mining methods has reduced somewhat the need for optimum pillar design. In contrast to permanent pillar methods, the dimensions do not need to be minimized because the pillars are usually recovered in a later stage of mining. However, the consequences of poor pillar design are often overlooked and can still be severe. A pillar that does not perform its intended role may result in excessive stope or pillar sloughing, difficult and expensive pillar recovery, loss of permanent access and remedial costs such as development rehabilitation, artificial support or low productivity.Pillar design concepts of the past were not developed for open stope mining conditions and generally have not been confirmed for open stoping. The focus of this paper is to introduce an empirical design relationship specifically for open stope pillars. It provides a stable, yielding or failed pillar assessment for a given design."

Control of the interface elevation between the aqueous and the organic phases in typical settlers is a fairly straight forward principle. However, when looking at the details involved in actually designing the aqueous and organic discharge launders and weirs, one comes to realize just how sensitive the system is to small variations in operating conditions and/or parameters. This discussion focuses on the details that must be considered during design, looks at the various types of control systems typically used (from the basic manual systems through to full automation), and equally importantly, looks at what happens in an operating plant when the conditions and/or operating parameters change.

"The Whitewood Mine near Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Approximately 2 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal is supplied annually to the Wabamun Generating Plant. A high water table, high groundwater pressure, and structural folds contribute to stability problems in the fine-grained overburden. Significant increases in coal recovery have been achieved in recent years through improvements in water management and mining methods. Agricultural capability of the post-mining landscape has also been improved following the completion of mining/ reclamation activities. Introduction The Whitewood Mine, located to the north of Lake Wabamun and seventy kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Figure 1 shows the location of the Whitewood Mine with respect to the city of Edmonton. The mine presently supplies two million tonnes annually of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to the 582-megawatt Wabamun Generating Plant located adjacent to the mine. The area is characterized by a high water table-, rolling coal seams and an overburden that consists of muskeg, clay and various sedimentary layers of sand, gravel and fine-grained sandstone. These distinctive characteristics require careful attention in order to not only meet the coal delivery requirements of the Wabamun Generating Plant but also to do so economically. "The Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia. It is divided into the Duke Mountain Block on the north east and the Dip Slope on the west. Together, these areas cover 39,503 ha of coal licences.The property is underlain by Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous marine and continental sedimentary rocks. Economic coal measures are contained within the Gates Formation. Exploration of the property began in the early I970s, with drilling commencing in 1975. To date, 255 holes have been drilled and nine adits have been driven to recover unoxidized coal samples.The property has a geological resource potential of 2.8 billion tonnes of medium and high-volatile bituminous coal. Medium-volatile bituminous reserves, totalling 68.9 million ROM tonnes at an over-all strip ratio of 6.3:1, have been identified in three pit areas in the Duke Mountain Block.Construction start-up will commence when sales contracts are arranged. The clean coal will be exported via the Ridley Island Terminal at Prince Rupert.IntroductionThe Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia in the southern port ion of the Peace River Coalfield. The coal field encompasses a strike length of 250 km of Lower Cretaceous coal-bearing strata in which 13 companies have identified several billion tonnes of resources and several hundred million tonnes of reserves. Currently, two companies with contracts are in the construction phase, and are scheduled to produce coal by early 1984. Quintette Coal Ltd. has a contract with Japanese steel mills to supply annually 5.0 million tonnes of metallurgical and 1.5 million tonnes of thermal coal. Teck Corporation (Bullmoose property) has a contract to supply 1.7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually."

"This paper examines the increasing need for mechanical-electrical people within the industry and some of the reasons why such a shortfall exists. It is suggested that, in part, it is image related. The present industry-education relationship in addressing the situation is examined and some thoughts are expressed on how these may be built on, in order to help solve the problem of attracting people to this critical area.IntroductionAs a long-time proponent of plant engineering and maintenance as a management function, I would like to review the progress made by the industry/ educational approaches in satisfying the needs in that area. In doing so, I would like to make the following points:1) that there has been an accelerating shortfall of mechanical-electrical people relative to the needs of the industry;2) that the condition will probably get worse before it gets better; ,3) that the past industry I educational approaches to alleviate the problem have met with limited success; and finally4) I would like to review some of the things being done and consider how these efforts might be extended."

MR. J. C. NICHOLSON: The author has discussed his subject in a very thorough manner. One difficulty is the tendency to regard a 'permitted' explosive as a 'safe' explosive. There is no such article as a safe explosive; any explosive is only as safe as the man who handles it. In making up the primer, the method illustrated in the paper is alright for the ordinary explosive but not so for the sheathed explosive, for the sheathing would be punctured. MR. T. L. McCALL: I fee! quite certain that there would be little, if any, trouble from flame shots or misfires if the author's suggestions were carried out. There is a tendency on the part of the shot-firer to over-shoot, so as to bring clown more coal for the miner, and frequently a shot has not sufficient burden imposed upon it. Shooting one hole may not only lessen the burden on an adjacent hole, but may practically release it altogether, in which case the second hole should be fired with a very small charge, or perhaps it might not be necessary to shoot it at all. While the paper refers to shooting in the coal only, it should be under-stood that the instructions given are equally applicable to brushing shots. I do not wish to bring up any contentious point, but would the author say a word on cushioning with air gaps and on multiple shooting? Single shooting in rock might open up a feeder of gas which could be ignited by the ?second shot.

"The three principal known mineral deposits of the Taku River area lie in the Tulsequah synclinorium. The axis of this north-south trending structure is along Tulsequah River valley; about 6 miles east of the eastern contact of the Coast Range batholith.The one proven mine of the area, the Polaris-Taku, is on the west side of the valley. It is a gold property, the gold occurring in fine needles of arsenopyrite disseminated in carbonatized volcanics. The mine was originally called the Whitewater, and the adjacent area the Whitewater gold belt. During the years 1937 to 1942 gold having a value of $3,284,000 was produced from 313,500 tons of ore milled."

"IntroductionWE HAVE HEARD quite a lot recently on newer methods -of supporting roof, such as roof bolting or the use of metal props and •booms, but, with the exception of roof bolting, these methods are confined mostly to comparatively low, regular seams and even .bolting cannot be used to hold soft sides. Thus, where a seam of coal has great variations in thickness, or where it is faulty, or where the coal sides must be supported, nothing can wholly take the place of timbering with wood. This paper will deal mainly with the method of timbering such a seam, namely, the No. 3 seam mined by Brazeau Collieries, Limited, at Nordegg, Alberta, where the full height of a thick seam is mined in development. However, a few words on one or two other systems practised in Alberta when, in development work, a thick seam is only partially mined, should be of interest.Examples of Timbering in High SeamsThere .are several methods in use today for dealing with high seams of coal. The most popular is to develop the seam by driving road-ways in the coal by some conventional method, usually recovering the full thickness of the seam on the retreat. The following examples illustrate two variations of this method.In Figure I we have a thick •seam of friable coal, with a good roof, pitching about 30 degrees, which is being mined by taking the upper part of the seam in the development work, leaving the •bench coal in place. "The presence of excessive water in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit initiated studies into the ground-water conditions that might be expected in mining the Granite Lake and Pollyanna pits. Hydrologic information obtained from a pump test program in 1974 indicated that deep-well dewatering could be successfully achieved. In 1976, a deep-well dewatering system consisting of eight wells was installed on the periphery of the Pollyanna pit . it has been responsible for a significant decrease in mining costs.This paper presents a brief summary of the engineering principles involved in the design of the Gibraltar dewatering system and the problems encountered in the installation and operation of deep-well pumps. IntroductionGibraltar Mines is an open-pit copper-molybdenite mine located approximately 230 air miles north of Vancouver in the central interior of British Columbia (Fig. I). The property consists of three separate major orebodies; Gibraltar East, Granite Lake and Pollyanna (Fig. 2). Mining commenced during the summer of 1971, in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit. The Granite Lake Stage 1 pit was mined from mid 1974 to mid 1976. The Pollyanna Stage 1 pit is currently being mined and the Gibraltar East Stage 2 is being developed for production. This report is intended as an outline of the studies and tests leading up to and including the installation of the Pollyanna pit dewatering system, the problems encountered and the results obtained.GeneralIn the summer of 1973, mining in the Gibraltar East pit progressed below ""daylight"" on the down-hill side and ground water very quickly became a costly nuisance in the day-to-day mining operations. Mining, maintenance and blasting costs reflected these problems. Concern was also voiced about adverse effects of ground water on pit wall stability. This concern later became a reality in the Gibraltar East and Granite Lake pits. A study was initiated to investigate various methods and costs of dewatering the pit areas. The study included in-pit sumps, deep peripheral wells and a drainage gallery system located below the pits."

"Recently, a number of major mining companies seemed unable to find a president from within the industry, and were searching outside the industry. From this, one could conclude that managers within the industry are either not being prepared or are not preparing themselves for presidential responsibility. Opinions were sought from a number of senior executives, to attempt to define the skills a prospective president should acquire and what actions a company could take or that a prospective president could take to acquire these skills.This paper contains summaries of the opinions obtained, along with the author's comments. The paper also describes the actions some companies are taking and the actions that an aspiring president can take to prepare himself for corporate management.IntroductionA manager is promoted up the management ladder when the manager's superiors believe that he is capable of handling a more senior position. Normally, the manager acquires this credibility by outstanding performance in his current management post, whether it be in a junior management (supervisory) or in a vice-presidential capacity.In most instances, the skills required for promotion can be acquired in the current position or, at worst, the abilities exhibited in a candidate's current role will convince his superiors that the necessary expertise for the more senior position can be acquired on-the-job. This is particularly the case when the new skills are felt to be an extrapolation of the old skills.However, in the case of appointment to presidential rank, there appears to be a need for new expertise which often is not acquired in normal management progression or, at least, boards of directors of some mining companies seem to believe this to be the case. The objective of this paper is to attempt to define the new skills that should be acquired by a manager who aspires to be the president, and to describe what actions might be taken by him to acquire them."

Gold has received a growing interest as a catalyst for the selective oxidation of organic molecules using oxygen under mild conditions1. In the liquid phase application small gold particles (2.5-7 nm) deposited over different solid supports can be used but, like many other noble metals, their catalytic activity depends upon the nature of the support and the preparation metod2-5. In particular, gold on carbon is the preferred catalyst for the oxidation of the alcoholic 2-7 and the aldehydic7-9 groups and one of the best preparation method is the immobilisation of colloidal particles2-5,8,9. Suggested application of gold catalysis in fine chemicals production, tested on laboratory scale preparations, is reported in table 110. In order to produce more efficient catalysts for the liquid phase oxidation and to derive new insights into the reaction mechanism, we have made a comparison among catalytic systems based on different metals. The first effort was to test the activity, if present, of naked metal particles and then to study the influence of various materials commonly used as a support.

"The object of this paper is to review electrolytic copper refining as it was in 1954(1), as it is now in 1984, and to comment on the many improvements which have been made in the last thirty years.In 1954, and even in 1984, the ASTM specification B 115 for cathode copper was 99.90% minimum copper plus silver content and 100% minimum electrical conductivity, IACS standard. However, to meet competition and to satisfy the requirements of the fabricators and the electrical industry, the electrolytic refinery must supply a product of 99.95% to 99.96% minimum copper content, and 101fJlo minimum electrical conductivity.The range of cathode impurities reported by 20 major copper refineries in 1954 are given in Table I.The much more rigid British Specification, DD 78, for high-purity cathode copper, specifies individual elements, as well as groups of elements, as shown in Table 2.The Svenska test has been replaced by a similar procedure which uses 2.r mm diameter wire. The ISO test is the one listed in the DD 78 specification. In Table 3, corresponding values for the Svenska and ISO test s are given for various wire bar coppers."

"Mining has the reputation of being a very ""macho"" industry. Recently, wider educational opportunities for women in nontraditional occupations and changes in mine technology have combined to make mining a viable career choice for women also. To benefit from this new resource, the mining industry faces the challenge of developing a different work environment from the one now burdened with sexism. Management supported initiatives are needed to facilitate such a transformation. The same rethinking of gender attitudes might also be extended to mining women in their traditional role as ""wife of"". The assumption that the male worker's wife is an unpaid adjunct is being questioned. It is suggested that women's separate concerns both as helpmate and as part of the mining workforce should be considered when planning for mining into the 21st century.IntroductionI must confess that, during the preparation of this paper, there have been many moments when I questioned my temerity. After all, I am not male, I am not an engineer, and I have never had a position in mine management. But as the wife of a mining engineer and a long-time resident of Northern Ontario mining towns, I do have an interest in the mining industry. This interest has had little to do with the technical and management aspects of the industry. Instead my research has been concerned with the impact the mining industry has on the people involved, particularly women, whether directly as employees or indirectly as wives. As I look toward the 21st century, I believe that the whole question of gender relations in the mining industry is one of the critical management issues smouldering below the surface."

"The low consumption of reagents can probably be attributed to a good clean type of ore. The cyanide level is kept at 0. 8 lb/ ton of solution and the lime at 1. 8 to 1.9 lb per ton of solution (pH 12. 2 to 12 .3). Experience in cutting down the lime level in half produced troubles in the presses, in the refinery and resulted in higher cyanide consumption. Finally the residue increased under these conditions, High lime always seems to prevent the trouble from occurring.A survey at one mine of the taxable work, performed in the mine shops for use in the mine, showed that under the new regulations, this had increased some 30 times what it was before the new rules came into effect on June 14, 1963.A water softener idea is incorporated at Lamaque with the crude addition of 100 lb of lime per shift to a spare agitator to precipitate the bicarbonates as carbonates from the water before it enters the mill. The lime titration of the softened water is about 0,2 to 0.3 lb per ton of solution (pH 11). This water is used mainly on the filters as washes."

The Daniel-Johnson dam, formerly named Manicouagan-5 (Manic-5), is located 800 km northeast of Montreal (Quebec) in Canada. This is the largest multiple-arch concrete dam in the world consisting in 13 arches and 14 buttresses. Since its construction in 1969, various type of cracks have appeared on both downstream and upstream faces of almost all the arches of this concrete dam. As a part of the Daniel- Johnson’s dam safety assessment program, Hydro-Québec is currently performing structural analysis of the dam with advanced numerical models to better understand and predict the dam behaviour. Because the buttresses transmit all the arch loads to the rock mass, determination of the properties of the dam foundation should not be neglected in dam global safety analysis and also to insure that reliable input parameters are used in the dam numerical simulations. This paper summarizes the past and the more recent investigations of this foundation used to assess its safety and stability. Moreover, the use of rock mass classification to estimate the deformation modulus, based on empirical equations, gives values in the range of 30 to 40 GPa that are higher than expected values. Using those values in the numerical simulations for dam structural analysis gives an excellent correlation with displacements monitoring of the buttresses.

Mechanical properties of precipitation hardenable magnesium alloys depend critically on the chemistry, structure, morphology, orientation and distribution of strengthening precipitates. It is therefore important to gain an improved understanding of these information and their correlations with mechanical properties. Our recent studies indicate that additions of 1-2 wt% of Zn to a Mg-6wt%Gd alloy result in a substantial enhancement in precipitation hardening and in creep resistance. If the strength and creep resistance of the resulting ternary alloy are to be further enhanced for commercial applications, then a detailed characterisation of the strengthening precipitates in these alloys is required. In the present study, the precipitates formed in a Mg-6Gd-1Zn-0.6Zr (wt%) alloy, peaked aged at 250°C, have been characterised in detail using transmission electron microscopy and 3-dimensional atom probe field-ion microscopy. It is found the peak-aged microstructure contains a dense and uniform distribution of precipitate plates that form on the basal plane of the matrix phase and are typically less than 1 nm in thickness. Detailed analyses of the structure and composition of these basal precipitate plates will be presented and discussed in the context of previous work on other Mg-RE¬Zn alloys of similar compositions.

Copper foil is an indispensable material for Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). PCBs in turn are essential elements of all electronic equipment today and thus important for our living in the new age of IT. The requirements from the copper foil market have lately been increasingly strict and diversified due to the rapid technical advancements in miniaturized high-density electronic equipment and highly integrated semiconductors. Tight control of thickness, metallurgical properties, surface morphology and characteristics is needed. In this paper, both electrodeposited copper foil for PCB and rolled copper foil for the flexible printed circuit board are discussed, and the recent technical developments in these copper foil products are reviewed.
