This paper reviews the development of certain aspects of the electrical specifications of Anglo American?s suite of specifications for gearless mill drives (?GMDs?). These specifications are based on experiences in both Anglo American?s and others? operations, benchmarking against large hydro generators, the advice of industry and university experts, and continuous close co-operation with OEMs. To achieve a step change in availability additional final testing and electrical protection have been implemented, insulation requirements have been specified for machines to be operated at high altitude and clean area and access control systems have been developed.

Removal of metal ions from effluents represents a significant technical challenge. As a consequence several industries, including mining, are faced with issues relating to removal of contaminant cations and anions from solution. This study evaluates three natural mineral materials referred to as basalt, scoria, and calcined shale for treatment of metal contaminated effluents by adsorption. Adsorption tests were conducted to asses the possibility of removing cationic and anionic metal ions from prepared solutions and mine water effluents. Sustainable production of industrial minerals requires that a diverse range of added value products be introduced.

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels were measured in underground mines in the vicinity of diesel vehicles equipped with several types of emission control hardware. In general, the emission control devices appeared to reduce PAH levels, but the companion mutagen study suggested that the reduction might not always be beneficial. All underground PAH concentrations were below the threshold at which a significant impact on health might be expected, but recent animal exposure studies have indicated that PAHs may not be the primary hazard from chronic diesel fume exposure.

Looking back over the past half century, it can be seen that the growth in the importance of hydrometallurgy for the production of non-ferrous and precious metals almost exactly parallels the rise of the environmental movement and its principal NGOs, such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. The paper will review important landmarks in the development of the science and technology of hydrometallurgy and show how many of these have been influenced by pressures on the industry brought about by environmentalists.
