"BAUER Foundation Corp. was one of three contractors awarded with the installation of a cut-off wall at the Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation project. The cut-off wall was constructed up to 84 feet deep and 25 inches thick. It extended from the crest through the middle of the existing dike into the underlying peat, sand, and rock layers. BAUER used the cement deep soil mixing method of Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to install the wall. Soil mixing was facilitated by first removing the peat layer in the wall alignment using Kelly drilling and replacing it with suitable backfill, resulting in a secant pile wall arrangement of replacement columns. BAUER successfully finished four task orders with a total length of just over 10 miles. Up to six rigs of the types BAUER BG 28, BAUER BG 40 and RTG RG 25 were concurrently used to perform the replacement columns and the cut-off wall installation.The paper introduces the project, the geotechnical site conditions, and the requirements specified by USACE. It focuses on the specific adaptation of the CSM method to the site conditions and on the equipment used. Strength and permeability results obtained from an extensive testing program are presented. The impact of the curing conditions on lab and in-situ test results is studied, and test results are related to soil conditions.PROJECTThe Herbert Hoover Dike is a 143-mile-long dike encircling Lake Okeechobee in south central Florida. When it was constructed in the 1930s and 1960s, the purpose of Herbert Hoover Dike was flood protection from hurricanes. However, during the 1970s a higher lake level was maintained permanently to provide local agriculture with water. Later, damage became apparent during two nearly back-to-back high water events in the 1990s, when numerous sink holes, seeps, pipes, and boils were observed (Fig. 1). In 2000, the Congress approved USACE to propose rehabilitation measures. The installation of a cut-off wall into the existing dike was chosen during the initial design process as the preferred measure to improve the safety of the dike (Davis et al. 2009).The first section of the dike to be rehabilitated was Reach 1 located along the southeast side of the lake between the towns of Port Mayaca and Belle Glade. An indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) multiple award task order contract (MATOC) was issued for this 22.4-mile-long stretch by USACE in 2007. BAUER Foundation Corp. (BAUER) was one of the three contractors that succeeded in the qualification process. Each of the three successful contractors had their own novel construction techniques. In the years 2008 to 2012 BAUER executed four task orders totaling over 10.0 lineal miles of cut-off wall with 3.3 million square feet of design surface area."

The foundation solution for a data centre building in Sydney, Australia comprised two alternatives, the first of which incorporated the use of CFA piles founded in rock at approx. 27m depth to support column working loadings of approx. 7.5MN, and the second utilising rapid impact compaction with a raft foundation of 1.0m thick concrete slab. Soil conditions comprised 1m of fill over 3 to 4m of sands varying from loose to dense consistency, underlain by very stiff clays overlying the rock. A creative solution incorporating Rapid Impact Compaction to improve the loose soils in conjunction with a piled raft solution was proposed. Piles proposed under the raft were Atlas Drilled Displacement piles which offered advantages of displacement pile performance and savings in time and material costs. The piled raft solution was developed in consultation with the consulting structural engineer, combining the skills of the piling contractor and consulting engineer to the benefit of the project. This paper describes the development and design aspects of the piled raft solution adopted for the project.

"Drilled screw pile is a newly developed displacement pile foundation which has been applied in soft clay for many years. Compared with traditional circular displacement pile, It is characterized by high bearing capacity, small volume and small squeezing effects. For the purpose of investigating the squeezing effects of drilled screw pile, a full scale field monitoring test with two test piles was performed. Detailed soil horizontal displacement and pore pressure measurements were conducted in the vicinity of the two drilled screw piles during penetration and subsequent soil consolidation. It can be concluded that the horizontal displacement of the surrounding soil induced by the installation of a drilled screw pile is mainly in a circular region with a diameter of 3 m (r/D<6), and the compaction effect outside the area can be essentially negligible; The excess pore pressures measured at the same time increase with depth throughout the entire process of consolidation, and its dissipation shows an exponential decay as a function of time.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of the displacement and stress changes induced in the soil surrounding a pile is very important for evaluating pile performance. Numerous field and laboratory research projects have examined loading conditions, total soil stresses, and excess pore pressures during and following pile installation (Pestana et al., 2002). A relatively comprehensive and detailed review of these experimental works from 1948 to 2002 was presented by Pestana et al. (2002). More recently, Xu et al. (2006) conducted a field experiment to study displacements and stresses in the vicinity of two pipe piles during their installation in a soft lightly overconsolidated clay and compared the field measurements with existing predictive methods. Abdrabbo and Gaaver (2011) collected field observation data from four different construction sites to study soil disturbance during construction of piles using continuous flight auger (CFA). They have found that the disturbed zone of soil by CFA has a conical shape and the excess pore pressure has no appreciable influence on the load capacity of the piles.Drilled screw pile (DS pile) is a kind of vibration-free, cast-in-place concrete pile. Because of the excellent bearing performance, low level of vibration pollution and negligible spoil, as well as its fast construction speed, DS pile has been widely accepted by many engineers around the world. As a new type of drilled displacement pile, the significant installation effects of DS pile on the adjacent soil have not been systematically and integrally investigated yet. Since a proper numerical simulation of the real installation process of DS pile is difficult to achieve, the investigation based on field measurements is necessary. This paper presents a field investigation of the installation effects of two DS piles on surrounding soils. Detailed horizontal soil displacement and pore pressure measurements during pile installation and subsequent soil consolidation have been conducted. Based on the monitoring data, variation of horizontal displacements and dissipation of excess pore pressures with depth and time have been analyzed. What's more, the construction machinery and technology used in DS pile installation are also simply introduced."

Expansive clays pose a variety of geotechnical problems. Although the admixture stabilization is proven to address their problematic swelling and shrinkage characteristics, the influence of unsaturated condition on the engineering performance of these soils needs further research attention. In addition, highly saline soils with high organic content would further alter their performance. A similar soil stratum was encountered at the Gulf of Cambay, Bhavnagar district, India. High salinity in the in-situ expansive soil of basaltic origin and the prevailing unsaturated condition, enforces the engineers to look out for possible soil treatment methods. In this regard, the present work attempts to analyze the unsaturated behaviour of this soil when fly ash is used as an admixture. A comparative study for stabilized and unstabilized mixes is performed in terms of their unconfined compressive strength, electrical conductivity, swell characteristics and California Bearing Ratio.

"Condon-Johnson & Associates, Inc. (CJA) with the assistance of design consultant, Brierley Associates, designed and installed a water tight shoring system utilizing several ground improvement techniques jointly. Prior to the installation of the shoring system, a test program consisting of the installation and testing of 7 jet grout columns; 1 soil mix panel; 7 soil anchors and 3 tie downs was performed to verify design assumptions. State-of-the-art quality control measures were employed throughout the project.The shoring system consisted of:•,Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) wall utilizing triple axis tooling to install overlapping columns along the perimeter of the proposed excavation to a treatment depth of 54 feet.•,Installation of steel piles in DSM to provide rigidity to the wall.•,Installation of a jet grout bottom seal, installed from surface to a depth of 58 feet below existing grade.•,Installation of 153 soil anchors, 1-1/4” diameter and 47’-6” length, to tie the jet grout bottom seal to the native soil below to resist hydrostatic uplift, installed from existing grade to a depth of 91 feet.•,Installation of walers and pipe struts for internal bracing•,Installation and stressing of 117 tie downs, 1” diameter and 16 ft length, to tie the pump station mat slab to the jet grout bottom seal, installed from inside the excavated pit.Subsurface conditions at the site consist of uncontrolled fill materials to a depth of 20 feet comprised of sandy silt and clayey sand. The native soils underlying the fill generally consist of soft and compressible lean clay and silt with varying amounts of sands to a depth ranging from approximately 44 to 54 feet below ground surface, which in turn are underlain by dense to very dense silty sand. The groundwater elevation at the site is approximately 8 feet below ground surface.This paper covers the design aspects, construction, and quality control measures undertaken by the geotechnical contractor, with supporting figures.INTRODUCTIONThe owner, County Sanitation District No. 2 of Los Angeles County, designed upgrades to their existing Long Beach Main Pumping Plant Facility. The upgrades consist of a new pump station that includes a reinforced concrete below-grade wet well and dry well, a two-story operations building, two 78-inch diameter pipe inlets, two 42-inch diameter discharge pipelines connecting the existing manifold, two pipe junction structures, two insert-type junction structures, and electrical transformers. This paper focuses on the excavation shoring for the new pump station. The original shoring design concept for the pump station excavation illustrated on the contract plans consisted of pressed in sheet piles, a jet grouted bottom seal with soil anchors, 2 levels of internal bracing, and tie-down anchors to resist hydraulic uplift forces on the buried pump station."

With the increase in population over the last decade, and anticipated population growth over the coming years, Norway is making significant investments in the Country’s infrastructure. Part of this investment in development starts with the Intercity development project in South-East Norway, which is the largest transport project in Norway. The Intercity Development project consists of 270 km (167 mi.) of new doubletrack rail, capable of train speeds reaching 250 km/h (155 mph). The new stations are centrally located in the major cities, in South-East Norway, to provide the benefit to as many citizens as possible. The goal of the project is to reduce the increase in traffic, which is coupled with an increase in population, and reduce the travel times between the cities. The Intercity Development Project has an anticipated completion date of 2034. The Sandbukta-Moss-Såstad (SMS) project, part of the Intercity development, includes 10 km (6.2 mi) of new double-track railway and is situated on the Østfold Line, near the city of Moss, Norway shown in Fig. 1. The 10 km SMS-section covers three open stretches and two tunnels, including 630 m (2,066 ft) substructure for double-track railways on the open line at Sandbukta. The Moss tunnel is a 1720 m (5,643 ft) long tunnel from Sandbukta to Moss center, including a 420 m (1,378 ft) long concrete culvert. The new Moss station includes an 800 m (2,625 ft) long station area. The Carlberg tunnel is a 2350 m (7,710 ft) long tunnel from Kleberget to Carlberg, including a 200 m (656 ft) long concrete culvert.

The New South Wales South Coast rail corridor is key infrastructure for both freight and passenger transport. Geomorphological and geological evidence suggests that land instability has been widespread throughout sections of the rail corridor, long before the first documented record of landslide activity in 1879. Major landslides occurred along a 25-km length of the South Coast Railway connecting Sydney and Wollongong because of significant rainfall events of the late 1980s. Since this time, several sites have been identified as subject to instability and treated progressively under a risk priority and safety management system. Two such sites comprise a station footbridge and overhead wiring structure (OHWS), both founded on high embankments overlying colluvial materials resulting in the structures’ potential movement and associated stability concerns. This paper presents these two sites as case studies, and discusses the project geology, geotechnical models developed, interpretation of monitoring data, and successful remediation of the rail structures using sleeved bored piles. The sleeved pile system was used to isolate bored piles, which separated the bridge foundations and OHWS from the moving soil mass to ensure the piles can carry the rail structure loads, unaffected by downslope soil movements.

"After more than 85 years of service, a critical link between New York and New Jersey, the Goethals Bridge over the Arthur Kill waterway, is being replaced with two new parallel bridges. Each bridge includes 1,650 feet long signature steel composite cable-stayed bridge, a 2,789 feet long New York approach and a 1,889 feet long New Jersey approach. The superstructure of each approach is supported on a series of two-column concrete piers and each column is supported on a single large diameter drilled shaft varying from 4.5 to 9 feet in diameter and anchored 45 feet below ground into the underlying rock.A performance-based methodology was followed for the strength and extreme event limit states design of the drilled shaft foundations. The design for seismic loads has been performed using the AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design. For all strength and service loads, the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications were used. Since the longitudinal and confinement requirements in the two specifications vary, the minimum longitudinal reinforcement was based on the more stringent requirements of the two codes. A design example is presented to illustrate the methodology in bridge deep foundation design using nonlinear time-history global analysis results with soil-pile interaction represented by sets of horizontal and vertical nonlinear soil springs along the drilled shaft, based on the soil and rock properties from the boreholes test results. In this paper the design methodology implements strain limits related to earthquake intensities and damage levels to calculate the capacity using XTRACT analysis, which aids designers to adopt applicable provisions that meet specific design requirements.INTRODUCTIONAfter more than 85 years of service, a critical link between New York and New Jersey, the Goethals Bridge over the Arthur Kill waterway, is being replaced with two new parallel bridges designed to carry vehicular traffic and a future mass transit corridor. The New York approach is a single structure consisting of 18 continuous spans, sloping at 4% for a total length of 2,789 feet without expansion joints. Similarly, the longest continuous portion on the New Jersey approach, with a similar slope, consists of 11 spans for a total length of 1,889 feet without expansion joints. The superstructure of each approach is supported on a series of two-column concrete piers that vary in height from 121.3 feet near the cable-stayed bridges to 11.8 feet near the abutments. Each column is supported on a single large diameter drilled shaft varying from 4.5 to 9 feet in diameter and anchored 45 feet below ground into the underlying rock."

Across the Potomac River from the location of the DFI47 Annual Conference (October 2022), in Alexandria, VA, two large permanent anchored walls with a decorative shotcrete face were recently constructed for the North Hill project, a new multi-family and townhome development. The project was executed with a design-build approach for the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority with review by the Fairfax County Geotechnical Review Board. The project was constructed in highly variable Potomac group sediments that include high plasticity clay/silt terrace deposits overlying coarser grained materials. The soils were over consolidated and exhibited potential for slickensides from relief of horizontal stresses from past erosion. The wall system was designed to include deep soldier piles and permanent long strand anchors considering past slope instability in the area. As the construction progressed, problematic soil conditions and water issues required modifications to drilling methods. The two permanent walls spanned 800 and 1,000 feet long with a maximum height reaching 40 feet.

A twin high-rise project site in Century City posed several foundation engineering challenges for the design team. One portion of the twin high-rise project site was required to utilize top-down construction in order to allow a driveway to remain open during construction of the project’s 40-foot deep excavation. The challenge was compounded by the need to utilize a mat foundation to support the high-rise construction and yet have temporary drilled shafts through the mat foundation area that would not create excessive differential settlement. This was accomplished by constructing a deck supported by eight drilled end- bearing drilled shafts with Osterberg load cells and five 7-foot-diameter end-bearing drilled shafts. The Osterberg load cells served to verify the capacity of each of the drilled shafts and preload the soils at the drilled shaft tips. The 7-foot-diameter shafts were constructed with bond breakers to prevent skin friction but instead mobilize end bearing (for settlement compatibility with the surrounding mat foundation). After the drilled shafts were placed, then top-down construction began beneath the driveway, leaving the driveway supported on the drilled shafts. Construction challenges included drilling of the shafts through previously abandoned tieback anchors from an adjacent parking structure basement, as well as cemented layers within the rock materials. The paper describes the use of the various analytical methods used to calculate capacities and check settlement compatibility, the construction and testing methods utilized, and the construction challenges encountered. INTRODUCTION Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions, Inc. (hereafter referred to as Wood) performed a geotechnical investigation for the New Century Plaza currently being constructed in the Century City District of Los Angeles, California. The New Century Plaza project consists of the construction of two new towers (designated as North and South Buildings) and the rehabilitation of the existing Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. The existing hotel tower is 15 stories in height above the existing grade and is underlain by four subterranean basement parking levels. The new North and South Buildings will stand approximately 46 stories in height above the existing grade to accommodate residential use. The new towers are planned west of the existing hotel. The site was previously occupied by the existing hotel subterranean parking structure and overlying podium structure, and a loading dock in the southwest portion of the site. The former western portion of the podium and subterranean parking structure west of the existing hotel building western edge were demolished to allow for new subterranean levels, a new podium structure, and the new towers. The lowest floor of the proposed subterranean level required excavation on the order of 35 to 80 feet.

"In this paper, the ultimate lateral resistance of a long, flexible, unrestrained vertical pile in a cohesive soil is computed under static loading condition using py curves. A simple and improved method for the construction of hyperbolic p-y curves for a cohesive soil is proposed for static loading conditions. An iterative analysis is employed with secant modulus approach, using a matrix method known as moment area method developed by Sawant and Dewaikar. The loadground line displacement relationship is obtained for different load eccentricities using p-y curves developed by Matlock, Georgiadis et al. and the proposed hyperbolic p-y curves for different eccentricity ratios. These values are compared with the values computed from model test performed by Rao et al. and with the limit equilibrium solution given by Broms. The comparison shows that, the results obtained using hyperbolic p-y curves shows a better agreement with the model test data with the maximum difference within 15% using other methods; whereas Broms' limit equilibrium solution shows some agreement with the results based on Matlock's p-y curves.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are used for jacket type offshore structures, which are subjected to large magnitudes of lateral loads due to lake or ocean waves, winds and ice forces. The failure of a pile-soil system is catastrophic and excessive deflection of the pile creates operational difficulties. In the view of this, bending moment in the pile is required to be predicted in a rationar manner. The p-y concept developed by Reese and Matlock (1956) is popularly being used to estimate the pile top deflection and bending moments.The ultimate lateral load which causes collapse of a pile-soil system is generally estimated using Broms' (1964) method, which is based on limit equilibrium considerations. The p-y curves are basically nonlinear in nature and include ultimate pressure at the depth where they are generated. Therefore, if the lateral deflection of pile top against different magnitudes of lateral load is obtained, it should be possible to obtain the ultimate lateral load from this load-deflection relationship."

Despite advances in pile design methodologies and piling techniques at site, difficulties and uncertainties still exists for design of piles particularly in coralline deposits and weak carbonate rocks. Such deposits are known to be heterogenous in nature, and occupy major stretches of earth, where piling experiences are probably very scanty. Such deposits are associated with low unit weights and usually consist of weakly cemented calcareous and carbonate soils interbedded with coral rocks containing cavities, which are completely void or filled with coral debris. Many of the studies indicate that conventional parametric relationships are may not apply to such sediments and rock formations. This paper intends to provide an appraisal of the available information that cautions against risks involved in conventional design practice and also serve as a guideline for pile design in such formations despite being a grey area of research. Contents of the paper is expected to provide a basis for the pile design and likely to serve as an eye-opener for research into this important soil-pile structure interaction problem.

Echo Dam, located near Coalville, Utah, is a facility that provides storage for irrigation and municipal use. Original construction of the dam was completed in 1931. Because of seismic concerns, the spillway crest structure and upper chute section, founded on old landslide and colluvial material, were recently replaced. Prior to replacement of these structures, jet grouting of a block of the loose and potentially liquefiable soils, directly beneath the spillway crest structure was selected as the preferred alternative to address the potential for settlement and cracking of the spillway crest structure. The replacement or alteration of the in-place soil reduces the likelihood of seismic-induced excess pore pressure development and subsequent settlements. Core drilling and sample recovery of the production jet grouted columns was completed to verify compliance with the specifications. It was recognized that due to the larger rock sizes within the deposits that full homogeneity of the jet grouted zone was unlikely to be achievable. However, the purpose of this jet grouted section was to strengthen enough of the soil so that widespread liquefaction does not occur. During the jet grouting production many instances of ground fracturing occurred. Fracturing was evident based on grout/air bubbles exiting the surface near some of the grout holes during jet grouting, air bubbles appearing in the spoil pits, and lifting of the ground surface in the vicinity of the monitor during the jet grouting process while the system was pressurized. In one instance, a section of the upstream spillway slab, which was left in place, was cracked due to pressurized grout escaping beneath the slab. The overall results of the jet grouting were satisfactory despite difficulties encountered. The cause of the fracturing is hypothesized and a recommendation is included to reduce the likelihood of this occurring on future jobs.

The damage caused by catastrophic earthquakes has always been an incentive towards more sophisticated building codes and requirements. In parallel to computer technology development, the engineers? attitude towards acquisition of more accurate results is increasing. This approach leads to designation of structural elements with more elaboration considering different aspects of their behavior. In addition, less simplified methods will be considered as satisfactory for analyzing such problems. The problem of soil-pile-structure interaction is one of the phenomena that can be included in this category. In general, there are two methods by which the study of soil-pile interaction phenomenon is studied. These include direct and sub-structuring methods. The sub-structuring approach relies on the linear or slightly non-linear behavior of soil since it employs the results of kinematic interaction analyses for inertial interaction studies. In the past, the kinematic interaction between pile-soil was considered as negligible. This was due to the softer nature of the surrounding soil that increased the time period of vibrations. However, more research revealed that although this approach was consistent in many cases, there were some sites where the time period decreased. This was due to the material properties of the foundation and the soil, in a way that caused the frequency of vibration meet natural frequency of the system. The second type of interaction is the inertial interaction which reflects the effect a structure on top exerts on the oscillation experienced by the foundation. This paper examines the impact of vertical load on the inertial interaction by virtue of impedance functions. Three different load cases for the structure at the top of a pile foundation were considered for the analyses conducted in this study. The changes in the stiffness and damping of the system by frequency are studied and finally, the results are presented.

Pier, well cap and steining junction is a complicated 3-d re-ion. The prevalent design procedure for the pier, well cap and steining in isolated manner is not rational. In absence of an integrated approach for design of the junction structure, the well cap is designed uneconomical and at the same time pier and steining are left relatively unsafe. Strut-and-Tie Model based design is a simple solution to this problem. An example illustrating design of the junction structure using STM is presented. On comparison of the outcomes of the STM based design with the prevalent design, the following anomalies are found: i) For smooth flow of forces, length of pier at its base should preferably be made equal to the outer well diameter, ii) STM based design for the pier is more rational, economical and safe. iii) Due to presence of hoop stress, as indicated by the STM, the steining concrete in a depth of p times outer diameter of the well from the well cap level should be limited to M15 grade, iv) STM based design for the steining is more rational, economical and safe.

"The project’s goal was to construct the Al Ghazala Intercontinental, a multi-use development in the bay area of Tripoli overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The site of the project is located approximately 500 ft (150 m) from the Mediterranean coast, near the Al Ghazala roundabout in the town center of Tripoli, Libya. The investor of the project was Magna Properties Group, Ltd. – Libya, the main contractor was Man Enterprise S.A.L., and the design and construction management was performed by Dar Al-Handasah Engineering. Trevi S.p.A. was contracted to perform the design and construction of the anchored diaphragm walls and dewatering systems for the excavation of a two-level basement car park, which extends across the full footprint of the site.The site was approximately 640 ft by 230 ft (195 m by 70 m) in plan and nearly flat. The groundwater level typically varies from about 11 ft to 23 ft (3.4 m to 7.0 m) above mean sea level. To construct the required raft foundation, it was necessary to excavate the area down to El. -15.7 ft to -26.3 ft (-4.8 m to -8.0 m), which resulted in an excavation depth ranging from about 27 ft to 39 ft (8.3 m to 12.0 m) below the existing ground surface.Subsurface ConditionsThe subsurface site investigation was performed in three phases by Al-Tamier Engineering Consulting Bureau. During Phase 1, a preliminary investigation was undertaken during the early stages of the project to obtain information about the general stratigraphy and groundwater level at the site. Phase 2 was performed to obtain subsurface information and design parameters, and Phase 3 was performed as a supplementary ground investigation to investigate unexpected ground conditions identified during Phase 2. "The project’s goal was to construct the Al Ghazala Intercontinental, a multi-use development in the bay area of Tripoli overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The site of the project is located approximately 500 ft (150 m) from the Mediterranean coast, near the Al Ghazala roundabout in the town center of Tripoli, Libya. The investor of the project was Magna Properties Group, Ltd. – Libya, the main contractor was Man Enterprise S.A.L., and the design and construction management was performed by Dar Al-Handasah Engineering. Trevi S.p.A. was contracted to perform the design and construction of the anchored diaphragm walls and dewatering systems for the excavation of a two-level basement car park, which extends across the full footprint of the site.The site was approximately 640 ft by 230 ft (195 m by 70 m) in plan and nearly flat. The groundwater level typically varies from about 11 ft to 23 ft (3.4 m to 7.0 m) above mean sea level. To construct the required raft foundation, it was necessary to excavate the area down to El. -15.7 ft to -26.3 ft (-4.8 m to -8.0 m), which resulted in an excavation depth ranging from about 27 ft to 39 ft (8.3 m to 12.0 m) below the existing ground surface. Subsurface ConditionsThe subsurface site investigation was performed in three phases by Al-Tamier Engineering Consulting Bureau. During Phase 1, a preliminary investigation was undertaken during the early stages of the project to obtain information about the general stratigraphy and groundwater level at the site. Phase 2 was performed to obtain subsurface information and design parameters, and Phase 3 was performed as a supplementary ground investigation to investigate unexpected ground conditions identified during Phase 2. The levees where the Mississippi River and the Lower Wood River meet near East Alton Illinois have been a problem area for years due to underseepage. The first phase of the deep cutoff wall was a 2,000-linear foot section that was completed in 2016 for the Illinois Flood Prevention District Council. This section was installed along the Wood River and the Mississippi river to depths of over 135’, The United States Army Corps of Engineers was tasked with continuing the cutoff wall along the Mississippi river. The wall was a continuation of phase I with depths up to 140’. The 1,000’ long cutoff wall was installed through fill, loose sands, cobbles, and sandy clay. The cutoff wall was terminated in either Glacial Till or sound rock. In order to provide wall permeability equal to or less than 1.0 X 10-6 cm/sec a self-hardening slurry (SHS) composed of ordinary Portland cement, slag cement, and water was utilized. The depths reached on this project using SHS is the deepest done to date in the United States. Along with the permeability requirements, a very narrow range for the unconfined compressive strength was specified at 50 – 180 PSI. In order to monitor the ground movement and water level fluctuations during the excavation of the panels with the Hydromill or Clamshell, 6 automated inclinometers were installed and monitored continuously during panel excavation in phase 1. Seven automated piezometers were monitored in phase 2. This paper will give an overview of the project with emphasis on the effect of the excavation on the instrumentation, specifically the reaction of the piezometers as the last panels were installed. INTRODUCTION The project is in Illinois, about 1000 feet downstream from where the Wood River Creek enters the Mississippi River between East Alton, IL and Wood River, IL adjacent to State Highway 143 (Fig. 1). The Wood River Lower Cutoff Wall Phase 2 Project (WR2) was awarded to TREVIICOS SOUTH (TIS) in September 2017. The Main Project features are: Construction of work platform, inclinometers installation and removal, cutoff wall construction by the Self-Hardening Slurry method (approx. 135,000 sf) up to 140' depth, clay cap installation, and site restoration. The levee system along this stretch of the Mississippi River has been plagued by under-seepage for several years. The phenomenon has worsened to varying degrees, depending on location, to the point that remediation was needed to ensure that Levee failure would not be an issue in the future.

"There is an old joke at Moretrench that defines dewatering as “that element of an underground construction project, which, when disregarded, will generate the low bidder.” Sigmund Freud wrote that all jokes are true, and the kernel of truth behind this one is that dewatering is often misunderstood or neglected until the last possible moment in the life of a project. The purpose of this article is to describe commonly used dewatering methods and to clear up a pervasive but fundamental misunderstanding about how to determine the amount of dewatering effort required for a project. The Tools of DewateringDewatering may be divided into two broad categories: (1) methods that remove water from the excavation after it has already entered and (2) methods that seek to exclude or intercept the water before it reaches the excavation. The former is generally self-performed by general or earth moving contractors using sumps and ditches, while the latter is usually done by a specialty contractor. SumpsProperly installed sumps can be an effective and economical way to control water inflow into a site. In this technique, groundwater is allowed to enter the site before being pumped away. Advantages of this method include lost cost, easy availability of equipment and the fact that a general contractor can self-perform the dewatering. However, caution should be used when deciding whether to use this method, and consideration should be given to the following factors:1. How will the soil behave under seepage forces? Will it run, potentially causing ground loss?2. How much groundwater lowering is required? If the groundwater only needs to be lowered a few feet, using sumps will be much more practical than for a situation that requires significant drawdown.3. Will the excavation subgrade soften or otherwise be damaged by allowing water to run over it?4. Is my workforce skilled enough to implement and manage the sumping plan?In the photo, the sump is capturing groundwater that has already entered the excavation by traveling under the sheets. In this instance, the house in the background of the photo was eventually purchased by the project owner after sustaining damage due to ground loss."

"The demand for underground parking in South Florida has increased as a result of changes to the local building code, coupled with developers’ desire to improve building aesthetics and provide much needed walk in retail space for high-end structures. Historically, underground construction was uncommon in South Florida due to the high groundwater level and porous soil/rock. Conventional dewatering methods become ineffective only a short depth below the ground surface and deeper excavations have required a tremie seal solution consisting of wet excavation and the pouring a temporary unreinforced slab under a water head. However, as excavation area and depth increase, the cost and schedule of the tremie seal method become problematic. For these reasons developers and construction teams alike have looked to contractors in South Florida for alternative means of construction.This paper details the construction of two sites in South Florida where Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) technology offered an efficient alternative to tremie seal construction. The Brickell City Centre required excavation of 8 acres to depths of 30 feet, and augercast piles up to 36” diameter and 110 feet in depth. The second site, Jade Signature, required an excavation of up to 41 feet directly adjacent to the Atlantic beachfront. Due to the concerns over differential settlement, the project featured a soil mixed gravity wall that was designed and installed to allow for completion of the tower prior to excavating the adjacent garage.Both projects involved improving every square inch of ground beneath the planned project excavation. The developed DSM seal slab solution creates a nearly impervious excavation at excavation invert with the strength to resist hydrostatic uplift forces. Low permeability site perimeter walls are constructed to complete the sealed excavation and reinforced with either beams or sheet piles for structural support. Augercast piles required for the permanent hydrostatic concrete slab supplement the uplift capacity of the DSM. After DSM and augercast piles are installed from grade, the site is excavated in dry conditions."
